Pearls Are Lovely Things
(Content warning :Blood, violence)
He'd hardly paid any thought to pearls, in all his centuries.
He hadn't thought of them at all whilst imprisoned, having far more relevant things to occupy his mind.
He'd thought often of one Pearl in particular, once his useful mage had retrieved it from the depths of his Unicorn's grave.
Now that one was no more, but it had four successors.
They lay in across a large stain on the sand, made of the same deep, deep red he'd sent numerous dark mages to stain their hands with in his name.
He knew that red, its sweet stench, its slippery sticky feel, he knew it too well now.
The wine of Leola's murderers lay spilled all around, even splattered across his robes. His chest, arms, hair, face, horns, and boots, and pretty much all of him.
A beautiful wine, a very matured one. Stored within the veins of these stars, left behind once their mortal forms had been unmade by ivory draconic.
They showed no true mercy, and no semblance of it was shown to them in return. Not even to the one who'd been named after something, which they knew nothing about.
Stardust shimmered in the golden light pouring from the fiery orange ball of the setting sun, as it sank behind ink-blue waves. Violet, magenta, lilac, rosy pink.
The remnants of these cruel, evil monsters, or of their bodies at least. Their souls were still intact, and he was surprised they even had such things as souls.
He grinned down at the Pearls, large white spheres shining with a blue-white glow, and tossed down his weapon.
Unlike his own, the inside of these four prisons were entirely bare, they'd have nothing in there to make eternity in a cage more bearable. Unlike him, they would never be free.
He'd considered dropping the Pearls into some abyss beneath the ocean, but that would give these bastards at least an infinitismally small chance of escaping. A Tidebound elf might accidentally find them, and even if there were no quasar diamonds left in Xadia right now, more would form as time passed.
Instead, he raised his arms and began to speak, tilting his head back to gaze upon the stars emerging within the deepening purple of the evening sky.
If only they could hear the words that doomed them.
Casting them out just as they'd done to her...except, he'd made certain their fate would be one far, far worse than death.
"Ascendere, natare usque in tenebras."
The orbs shot into the air like arrows, rapidly soaring higher and higher, growing smaller until they were out of sight.
The Cosmic Order would drift away through the infinite vastness of the universe, far beyond this world.
No-one would ever stand trial before them again.
There would be no cosmic rules.
Callum, and other humans as gifted as him, would have no "gods" who forbid them from practicing primal magic.
He came back to himself some time later,on his knees in the moonlit water that lapped gently at the silver shore.
"Claudia's worried about you. You...alright?" Terry asked awkwardly.
He gazed down at his hands. The sea had washed much of that sickening scarlet off of him, in the hours that had gone by.
"I am fine. Tell her not to worry, and that I'll join you both by the fire soon."
As soon as the other elf had walked off, he rose to his feet.
He gazed toward her star, with a hint of a smile.
"You two would've loved each other,Leola."
His gaze was drawn away,Claudia was excitedly waving and calling for him, holding out what appeared to be a plate of pancakes.
He looked at his firstborn's light one last time, then walked towards his second daughter.

so season 6 of The Dragon Prince really went HARD on parents, children and generational trauma. A+, only one note which is not reeeeallly a spoiler? well OK a tiny part of it is a big one so I'll slap it behind a readmore.
what IS it with this show and dead/absent moms??? I mean, first Ezran and Callum, Rayla, Soren and Claudia, and - where was Leola's mother in all this drama?? She dead? Ditched Aaravos and Leola like Lissa did Viren because he was also poisoned by arrogance? Because that heartwrenching story feels juuuuuuust a tad too convenient (I mean, everything he said might be factual, it feels correct that anything as powerful as a Startouch elf is in fact probably All About Hierarchy and maintaining their supremacy, but Aaravos is the king of lying by omission and assumption.)
The only mother we see in this show that isn't dead is Zubeia, and it's not like they didn't TRY to kill her off. She's been nearest thing TO dead for like, almost a season and a half.
The IMPACT of all those missing moms? Not...really that much? Except for one - Lissa. Lissa leaving Viren and the kids is a festering scar of pain and resentment more than a decade later (we learn that Viren using dark magic to cure Soren was right around the time of Harrow courting Sarai, and describing Callum as a 'toddler,' it couldn't have been much more or less than that) that clearly hasn't resolved at all for any of them through the end of this season.
While Rayla, Callum and Ezran are described as missing their parents, grieving for them, they don't seem to have the same kind of fear of being unlovable; their fears and feelings about their parents seem to be mostly to do with legacy, "can I be as good/strong/worthy a person as they were," not "can I be good enough to be enough for them" The show HAMMERS on this point. Makes me wonder which showrunner was a child of divorce :P
It's not misogyny I don't think, there are active and interesting female characters in a number of different kinds of roles, not all just "ok, give THIS action figure boobs and make her a girl For The Rep" kinds of characters. But it's an interesting blind spot.
(I really, really just want an equally ridiculous and heartbreaking fic of Soren having an aaaabsolute meltdown/freakout about meeting Corvus' mom and Corvus' mom going from being reaaaal suspicious of her kid dating Virenspawn to just sighing a lot when Soren says something sweet but dumb, and to Corvus' intense relief not nagging him any more about 'well if you HAD to date another Crownguard who's too busy to give me grandchildren, why not that nice boy who translates for General Amaya instead of the Dark Mage's hellspawn?")

What's been mentioned for the Dragon Prince Season 6: Book Stars so far...
Having listened and read a bunch of interviews, here's my collected notes (Updated for October 2023);
No current release date, but confirmed 9 episodes, same as previous seasons.
Seasons Four though Seven are all the Mystery of Aaravos arc.
While there's not going to be any real time skip between S5 and S6, there will be a small one within S6. Update - there's a few days time skip between S5 and S6.
Season 6 will be more mature to the point the age rating is increasing. It will also go into deeper emotional stuff - "fans should enjoy the breather before being emotionally wrecked by the next book."
(Most of) Episode 1 of season 6 was shown at NYCC 2023 panel. Notes on summaries people have posted here.
New characters to be introduced;
Astrid - voiced by Boone Williams - Female Celestial Skywing elf. She's mysterious and there's 'something cool' about her design.
Character based off Moonberry Surprise.
A new Startouch elf. Possibly the Merciful One (they/them) from the Sea of the Castout statues.
Tumblr media
Upcoming for main characters;
Callum - every time you do dark magic, it becomes harder to come back from it. Info on Callum birth-father. (Callum and learning Moon Arcanum - Giehl's opinion is doesn't want Callum treading on Rayla's thematic territory and stealing her thunder). Rayllum note - how would Callum using dark magic affect the trust and friendship they've been building up?
Rayla - On the curse coins - too spoilery, so they won't answer questions related to that. On Rayllum note. Would Rayla do anything for Callum? And what would Callum call upon her to do if that was the case? Questions getting asked next season, just to make you suffer.
Callum, Rayla and Stella confirmed visiting the Starscraper.
Tumblr media
Ezran - sticking to his ideals and pacifism will be tested. Rough and tough decision(s).
At some point Ezran and Callum will visit some 'weird' ruins.
Soren - has had lighter seasons so far, but is about to face darker questions. There is trauma that the writers haven't told anyone about that will come to light at some point. Soren is getting an opportunity to confront Viren about what happened at the Storm Spire (they did meet up in S4E7, which is covered in the short story Strangers, but writers felt it lacked the satisfaction needed, as neither really was in the headspace to talk), but uncertain if this is just a therapy thing or if Viren lives.
There's going to be a funny Soren and Corvus story later on.
Claudia - S5 she was under a lot of pressure, and it's not easing up. How will Claudia be impacted by Viren's decision - further into darkness or pulled back into the light? Claudia being willing to risk life and limb for her goal(s) - and then actually paying the cost of a limb - what does that mean for her and Terry?
Karim - is about to get in over his head. He doesn't realise the kind of alliances he's making.
Amaya and Janai don't get enough love in these interviews. 😢
Zym - Goes with Soren to find Zubeia. Spoiler indicates Zym has a heart to heart with her
Characters we'll be seeing more of;
Aaravos - there's a lot more of him coming in S6.
Kim'dael - 'big plans' that even go beyond the show, though specifically refused to answer if she'll met Rayla again (they met first time in Bloodmoon Huntress graphic novel).
More with the pirates and Scumport (however, Finnegrin while not confirmed dead, won't make a reappearance in S6/7). Scumport set up a bunch of stuff for going into season 6.
Kpp'Ar - confirmed there'll be more stuff about him in both S6 and S7.
Mukho - the mushroom mage, Earthblood elf who's a world expert mycologist.
More shadowpaw content.
Possibly Ellis and Ava briefly, but could be S7.
Lore -
The lore about Stars primal and Startouch elves and other mythology will be explored. How you kill a Startouch elf will be answered - including more info on Laurelion (mentioned in the Death of an Immortal poem).
(Going by how the graphic novels releases are generally introducing things that are mentioned in the next season, Puzzle House's emphasize on unicorns, and how there is a big bit of unicorn lore mentioned in the novels, is a good hint that this unicorn lore is getting explained in show too. But, just to clarify, it's not confirmed this is happening - however, it is a impactful bit of backstory and there's only 2 seasons left).
Most likely information about how Primal Stones are made - specifically how a storm was trapped from the top of Mount Kalik to create the Primal Stone Callum smashed. Ehasz mentioned that something brought up in the second episode will be expanded on in S6, and the info about the Sky Primal Stone is the only info that hasn't been addressed elsewhere from E2 that I could pick out.
More lore about golems (as in the rock guardians and Elmer)
Other notes;
Season 6 will have an explosive start.
Questions raised by Ehasz;
Was the dragang moving Aaravos's prison smart or would it have been safer to have left it? It's something they'll grapple with right away.
Is Aaravos being honest with Viren about what's going to happen? (I'm wording it as being honest rather than saying is he lying, as Aaravos's thing is manipulative truths and misdirections etc, rather than outright lies).
No context: 🔥 (Can't help looking at the use of explosive start by the NYCC notification)
There's stuff in Season 2 that will get explained in Season 6 - while they're not exactly clues, there will be referencing from S2.
Keep an eye on changes in the openers - they're continuing the hints - like when they swapped out Viren with Callum to let you know Callum and dark magic/Aaravos is going to be in the episode.
Season 7 will be Book 7: Dark.
The next graphic novel will be about "family and building trust." Update: Title Dreamer's Nightmare
Tumblr media
Can young Ezran and Callum quell the brewing storm in the quiet town of Noct, or have bad dreams come to haunt for good?
Giehl says this story has Ezran as the lead character and the artist said they enjoyed doing the many animals.
There were hints dropped at NYCC 2023 that there may be other projects based on the Dragon Prince world, but they'll come under a different name. TDP will only be the 7 seasons. (Most hints I've seen suggest they may be working towards an Orphan Queen film/series, but it could also be a continuation).

Okay, okay, if the female startouch elf is/was Sarai, we can also start assuming that Aaravos might be Callum's dad 😀
I hate tiktok people who made me think about it even for a moment

S4 of the dragon prince was… a bit underwhelming. Especially since a majority was about something that apparently happened off screen during a time skip in a damn tie-in comic. Like. Bold of them to assume everyone watching is even aware of the comic. Let alone read it. They should’ve released a special episode that basically covered the events of the comic placed at the end of s3.
Like how The Sandman dropped Dream of a Thousand Cats/Calliope at the end of the current season. Plus Zubera really isn’t that interested in helping prevent the release of Aaravos. She sees some rocks and is like “oh no. I guess my work here is done” “but you didn’t do anything?” and abandons them to walk round the long way, when she could so easily destroy the rock pile. She’s a fucking dragon with lightning powers but I guess it’s; Who Would Win? A big Dragon Lady, or *pile of rock*. Rex Igneous took care of the rocks like it was nothing (and don’t give me Oh But He’s the Earth Arch-Dragon! Only he can move rocks! bc the guy shoots a yellow beam from his mouth sure but he brute forced it so no reason Zubera couldn’t.
And if anyone tries something sexist like Male Dragons are stronger than female dragons then congrats! You fail to appreciate that a dragon, especially an Arch Dragon, is a force of nature on legs and with a usually annoyed or tired disposition and have immense strength due to being a damned dragon. Also the Netflix image lies on how Rex looks. It depicts him (especially his face at least) as golden yellow, and he’s mostly brown.
Aaravos tho? That sexy elf stole the show in the one scene he was in like a Boss. Just possessed Callum, roasted literally everyone, then fucking Mic Dropped like the cool sexy bastard that StarTouch Elf is
Also why did we waste time with Callum find the Google Translate Book and deciphering the mirror runes if Zubera was literally just gonna monologue to us about it. It’d have been better if even with the book the runic script was a mystery. Adding to the fact the dragons used some kind of magic to erase mentions of him from history like when Viren tried researching Aaravos only for the words to blur and fade whenever he tried to look. And giving more validity for the dragon queen to tell us about it bc naturally she would know exactly what it was and did due to viren stealing it from Stormspire after slaying Avizandum/Thunder

Stars
Masterlist
Pairing:Claudia x Female!Reader
Words: 114
Prompt: Stars
Tumblr media
"Which constellation is that?" Being a startouch elf meant also being covered in constellations, which Claudia found as endless source fascination. Second after you told her that you were covered in stars, you had to lie and tell her that not every part of you had stars. You spent hours listing off various constellations and explaining what they meant. For someone who’s usually very hyper she was surprisingly paying a lot of attention. She could barely keep her hands off you, she'd trace them with her fingers and kisses. "You're so beautiful"
"So are you, darling" Using your magic you covered her hair in stars.
"You have to show me how to do that"

Hello Runaan! I'm making a startouched elf oc and just wanted to know, is Txar a good name for a female?
I'm not familiar with many Star Touch elf names, but I don't know of anyone using the name Txar, so it's all yours - or hers. It has a lovely ring to it.

Do you think the human kingdoms are possibly monotheistic and the elves ( possibly different between each arcanum) are polytheistic?
I mean, no kingdom or people are ever wholly one or the other. There’s always ethnic and religious minorities, or majorities, in every place and settlement with very, very few exceptions. So I would think every type of elf and every kingdom would have variations of both.
I could see the Moonshadow elves having a different god/goddess for every phase of the moon (indeed, they have the strongest philosophies on life/death that we’ve seen thus far) but I do picture Startouch elves being somewhat atheistic / self grandiose. (When you can predict or influence the future, why wouldn’t you be?) The Sunfire elves also seem to have ritualistic / religious beliefs, judging by the Light and how some of Khessa’s councils seem to be priests or Sun mages (or both).
I have a feeling that Duren - or Aanya, at least - has a firm belief in the afterlife and as the breadbasket of the Pentarchy (and sufferers of famine) would likely have agriculture / rain based deities primarily.
Katolis seems to have something at quite a high level, given that Opeli is High Cleric, and a cleric is a priest or religious leader. Many people have talked about the ways in which the Royal family of Katolis are Jewish-coded in both names (Sarai, Ezran), philosophical ideals, and food (jelly tarts = hamantaschen).
Katolis / Harrow’s funeral participates in cremation, and tradition denotes seven nights of mourning for a fallen ruler (note, in relation to the previous point, that the Jewish mourning ritual of Shiva lasts for the same amount of time). There is no mention of an afterlife or deities at his funeral. It seems that Callum (and likely his mother by extension) do believe in one, as Callum says, “I can’t help but think... what if she was watching over us?” after he and Ezran’s ordeal in the ice in 1x06. His vision / interaction with Sarai in 2x09 furthers this point.
The closest we get to any sort of deity — if not a manifestation of an ideal/concept, like Liberty, Truth, Victory, or Wisdom (all commonly female across a board range of pronouns and mythos) — is Lady Justice, but we simply don’t know enough about her to say.
So, basically, I think it would be a good mix of both across the board. Why not, after all?

OKAY I GOTTA JUST... VIBE ON THIS FOR A SEC bc I've been thinking about it nonstop
This makes so much fucking sense I really want it to be true, because it explains so much—"Starfolk, fabled, fallen, found/Once everywhere, now none around," unicorns and the primal stones, Aditi and the Sunfire elf royal bloodline, the primacy of Sunfire elves among the elven subgroups, just... hhhhhHHHHHHHH.
Like the thing that really tinfoils me here is that... so if all the primal sources are derived from the Star primal, like light through a prism or something? Like @its-leethee said, it makes sense for it to be all the same thing underneath. It's (imo) implied across multiple sources that the primal reagent for a dark magic spell doesn't actually have to correspond to the nature of the spell being cast, it's just easier. Aaravos can master all the primal sources because they're kinda all the same thing underneath, and it's the thing he's already familiar with.
But what gets me is that this is the first thing I've encountered that really goes with the theme of the Key of Aaravos being a goddamn die. Especially if it's related to his own heart—if Laurelion's white Star heart was pierced by the Novablade and he became a second elf, then a) it makes sense for Aaravos to remove his own heart to ensure he keeps what's left of his Startouch power, fallen or not, rather than become mortal, but b) if he then put the heart in a thing that represents chance and random selection and shit? I mean, if Star is the root of the other primal sources, and this is how the all the primal elves came to be? if maybe every so often a First elf still rolls "Star" in the "what primal source is your mortal self" lottery, and becomes a depowered, fallen version of what they were before, like maybe an elf with a touch of Star power within them but not themselves a Star any longer? I'M NOT OKAY ABOUT THIS.
Then ALSO just as a side note on "the Sun herself"... there's actually no indication of Laurelion's gender in canon (I had to check). It's only Aaron Ehasz's tweet using "him" and "his." Then we have Elarion, a suspiciously similar name, linguistically, that is personified as female in the Midnight Star poem. Now, that could be a case of "all boats cities are female" or names being aggressively gender-neutral, but...? Even if Aaron's not faking us out, it's clear that by the time of the show everyone has forgotten that Laurelion even existed, much less their gender. Personification of the sun as female could have come later, maybe to balance with Sol Regem being male, or because they're prone to extremely powerful queens.
I got WAY off into a Tolkien digression about Laurelin, the half of the Two Trees of Valinor that births the sun with her last surviving fruit, and whose light was preserved in the Silmarils but I'm gonna do a separate post for that shit.
But look. Look:
Tumblr media
This isn't the only explanation and I'll talk about other possibilities elsewhere at some point. One thing I've seen people compare the shape of the rune on Laurelion's amulet to is an acorn. A goddamn seed.
Oh let me meditate on the beast of devouring that feeds on the stars, that star devourer dragon Let me repel this Star dragon and banish it from the light of my Sun
- Ancient Sunfire chant, Tales of Xadia
I'm thinking about the sun and the stars and how Laurelion is, probably, both.
(Reposted because I’m a damn fool!!)
The Big Bang, in real life
The majority of atoms which make up us, our earth, and even our very own sun, were formed in the hearts of the very first stars in the universe.
These stars were made of lighter elements, mostly Hydrogen, Helium, and Lithium. But under the immense pressure at the core of those first stars, heavier atoms like Carbon, Oxygen and Nitrogen were formed. The stars eventually died - exploded - and released those heavier elements into the universe to be crafted into other forms.
As Carl Sagan famously put it, "We are made of star stuff."
And so Aaravos's quote in the teaser for season six - We are, all of us, stardust - is a blatant nod to the Sagan quote as well as, I am assuming, that aspect of the universe in some shape or form. Allegorically, it speaks to the idea of the universality of existence in the basest sense. But also, it acknowledges that the stars, like everything else, operate generationally.
So in this way, if we are to assume the TDP cosmos operates at least somewhat similar to our own, Xadia's sun is a younger (but still old as balls) star, from a different generation than the stars which are far more distant and ancient.
(As a side note, the very first stars in the universe did not last very long. Though certain stars in existence right now have "lifetimes" which are projected to last longer than the universe has currently been in existence.)
So if Xadia's sun is technically a star, even by Xadia's own admission (see Sunfire chant), then by this metric I have to ask...
What makes the Sun arcanum different from the Star arcanum?
While those first, most ancient of stars produced the materials which would become life, only a sun can sustain life and is therefore inextricably linked with the earth and all the life on it. It's this connection which I imagine is responsible for the change in the nature of the magic.
In Callum's Spellbook, Callum makes some word-association lists for the different types of magic. He associates "truth" with both Sun and Star (perhaps a trait of their shared stardom). No other words match up completely, but it feels like they are referencing similar things within different contexts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Sun teaches while the Stars are simply intelligent; the Sun is a "guiding light" while the Stars are associated with "destiny." Further, many of the other words Callum associates with the sun are about being in positive community with others (optimism, warmth, charisma, leadership). The nature of the sun is more giving, nurturing, and dare I say loving than that of your average star. Sun is revealing and honesty, Star is mysterious and reality-altering. Further, there is a dynamism in the words for Sun Magic that is absent from Star Magic - sharing knowledge vs simply having knowledge, guiding vs prescribing a set path.
(Another side note: Callum also mentions that Star mages are born, which, Callum's limited understanding aside, is perhaps a hint about what it will take to connect to the Star Arcanum. I have thoughts, but.... I'll just leave that there, winky face)
Obviously, these word associations can only go so far. Some of the most hostile and arrogant (eh eh!!) figures we've met have been Sun-aligned. But it does make me wonder about the beginning of Sun magic and what that introduction may have looked like.
Ever wonder what those sparkly dots are up there?*
Okay, so big question for me. Is Aaravos a star, like, literally a personification of a ball of gas burning billions of miles away, or is he just like, a very special elf? The same goes for all Startouch elves.
Zubeia refers to Aaravos as both a star and as an elf, and it's one of those things which I can't decide is real or simply a more poetic way of speaking of him. Is "Startouch elf" simply another type of star? Official art also sometimes depicts him and others as constellations. Are they the formed consciousness of a collection stars?
But it also makes me think of how often Sunfire elves personify the sun/the sun orb.
JANAI: You are a student of history, yes? Do you know where the Great Orb of the Sunforge came from? KARIM: Legends say it was a gift from the Sun herself. The gift of a millenium. - "The Drakewood," S4E6
In "The Queen's Mercy," we have...
Aditi nodded. “[...]and so, as the Sun’s daughter, I will lead you into her embrace.”
...and earlier, there is this:
Queen Aditi the Merciful, they called her. Queen Aditi the Kind. The Light of the Sun Incarnate. Kim’dael had thought it all an insufferable exaggeration. Sunfire elves gilded everything they could touch, of course they would do the same to their beloved leader.
Karim personifies the corrupted sun orb in "After Darkness":
He could still see it: the top of the Sunforge Tower, upside-down from where he lay, shrouded in inky corruption. It looked ill, its sickness weeping red and crowning the spire in a haze of blood. [...] We will come back, he promised his beloved, tainted city, his lost home. We will not abandon you. The orb pulsed mutely, a cry for help he could not answer.
TDP uses personification a lot, so it is kind of hard to parse out when it's being literal and when it's being lyrical. Perhaps in the examples cited it's simply the ostentatious way of the Sunfire elves like Kim'dael thinks. But if Aaravos, a known person, can be a star, then I can easily reason vice versa.
In the Book 1 novelization, Aaravos refers to himself as "of the First Elves." And if that is true, it follows that there must have been "Second Elves."
So who is Laurelion?
The significance of the laurel in the Western canon goes back to the myth of Daphne and Apollo.
There are various versions of the story, but essentially, Apollo (popularly associated with the sun), falls helplessly in love with Daphne. Though her reasons vary in different iterations, Daphne turns away from Apollo's affections. She runs and Apollo pursues. Just as Apollo is about to catch her, she begs for help - sometimes from her father, a river god, and sometimes from her mother, a nymph or Gaia - and she is saved by being turned into the laurel tree. In Ovid's Metamorphosis, when Apollo reaches Daphne post-transfiguration, he can still feel her heart beating below the bark. From that point on, the laurel wreath was associated with Apollo, achievement, and victory.
Gold, the element, takes the symbol Au from its Latin word, Aurum, which has etymological ties to 'aurora' (dawn). Names likes Aurelio or Aurelius similarly mean "golden" or "guilded."
So, taken together, I of course think immediately of this:
Tumblr media
THAT BEING SAID, this looks more like a weeping willow or a wisteria than it does a laurel, which has bushy foliage rather than hanging. The closest I can maybe get is a mountain laurel, which does have blooms that hang kinda sorta like a wisteria, though not nearly in such a dramatic fashion. But anyway!
The golden laurel...⋆。°✩Laurelion✩°。⋆
Interestingly, in Ovid's retelling of Apollo and Daphne, Apollo's love is the result of being struck by Cupid's golden arrow, while Daphne's disgust of Apollo's advances are the result of being struck by a lead-tipped arrow. And so, there is an association there with gold and love. And within the context of the myth - Cupid is getting petty revenge on Apollo after Apollo is boastful and arrogant about his own prowess with a bow and arrow - it's also an instance of weaponizing love.
Which brings us to that which is known everforth as...
The Nova Blade
It is actually quite common for stars to have companions and to exist in what is called a binary star system. In this system, two stars are gravitationally locked in orbit and can appear as a single object when observed by the naked eye. Sometimes, the proximity between these two stars results in what is called a nova - a sudden brightness which appears to be a new star. Novas are not associated with stellar "death" (you'd be thinking of supernova, in that case).
Now in our universe, novas are not actually stars. They are events, momentary bursts of brightness under specific circumstances between two stars. But the name "nova" originally came from the term "stella nova" which means new star.
…and though undying, took last breath, immortal Laurelion was no more. - "The Death of the Immortal"
Tumblr media
Did Laurelion just...die? You know, it was really unclear...
I do not think the Nova Blade killed Laurelion in the moment described in the poem. Kazi is so doubtful and Callum is so sure - Callum you fool! - surely that would be too easy (quote quote easy)?
I will grant that "Supernova Blade" would sound kind of hokey, and even originally I had thought, "Oh cool, 'nova,' like 'SUPERnova!'" And then I thought to look up just 'nova' and it turns out it was actually its own thing. But even without all that, the 'though-undying' of it all haunts me.
And so I hold to the idea that the Nova Blade makes an immortal mortal. It does bring death's bite, but in a way in which Laurelion becomes something else, reborn with death's promise like all other mortal beings are.
I have two point five ideas.
The Light of the Sun Incarnate
My first hypothesis is, of course, that Laurelion became the tree with the Sunseed with a name that's a nod to Daphne and Apollo. Of course, I'm assuming here that the tree in which the Sunseed is kept is responsible for producing/sustaining the Sunseed, which may not be true.
Now the drawback of this idea is the legend that the Sunseed was a gift from the Sun herself. So here, it would have to be within the context of the Sun sacrificing Laurelion in some way for this purpose. There's obvious Jesus parallels here which, full disclosure, is not really my bag, baby, but there are plenty of elements in TDP that very easily slot in with Christian canon. But also, in the laurel myth Daphne begs a parent to save her, which puts the sacrifice of it all in a different light. It makes me wonder if the event with the Nova Blade is self-inflicted and, mayhaps, an act of love. So in this sense, the Sun "gifted" the world (or just the Sunfire elves, I dunno) her child by simply letting her child go.
My second hypothesis is that Laurelion became the first Sunfire elf, of the second elves. We are, all of us, stardust. It would not come as a shock to me if all elves were ultimately descended from the Startouch elves of old.
AND THEN we've got Aaron Ehasz talking about how the red dragon scale amulet (...and look, this show does color coding, that's SUN) is somehow related to Laurelion?
Sunfire elf, I say! SUNFIRE ELF!
Combining both of these scenarios, I could see Laurelion being the child of the Sun (again IF we are to assume each star is a living entity). Or maybe Startouch elves are born OF stars while not, technically, being the same thing, like an egg hatching the next evolution of its mother.
And so, perhaps Laurelion chose to become mortal, to become the first Sunfire Elf. And all of Laurelion's children, and their children's children, and their children's children's children, they were all of them children of the sun, the light of the sun incarnate, bringing the hope and optimism of something new to the world; destined to return in death to the embrace of their very first mother. And as a symbol of her love, the Sun gifted Laurelion the Sunseed, golden and cradled within a tree.

Aaravos x reader mage, other daughter of Viren. Viren views her as a disappointment, only learning healing and defensive spells. Witnesses her father trap Runaan in a coin and later on frees him/ helps him escape from the palace. Aaravos witnesses this and begins to manipulate the reader.
I’m so sorry it took so long. I am not quite happy with it, but I hope this is almost what you’re asking for? I apologize if it’s not that!
_________________________________________
“You shouldn’t do that.” The deep voice of the startouched appeared near her ear, whispering almost so sweet and delightful. He knows what she is doing, knowing what she is trying to accomplish. Even if his voice is heard like it is being so close to her, he is behind his mirror, his prison. But the elf is eyeing her, following her steps through the room where the mirror is located. Until that point, Aaravos didn’t talk to her, but now he reveals himself to her. He knows who she is, many times has he listened to her an Viren talking, Viren calling her his daughter and how he wants the young mage to focus on the more important, powerful spells.
Yet, the startouched found it being a helpful and important piece to his puzzle, and he couldn’t let the oppurtunity slip to lose her positive powers.
“You know, if Viren finds out, he will be even more disppointed. He’d point you out as a traitor.” He spoke so calmly and yet so demanding. “You’re capable of even more than just this, young mage. You are the exact opposite of your father. You fight for the good, you fight for the living, wanting to protect and help. Someone like you... is really important.”
He saw the female right infront of him, a smug grin appearing on his face. “I can teach you more. Even more than those books you have from the libary. They don’t give you all the answers, not all the secrets, not all the meanings. What do you say, mage?”
Seeing her being nervous, obviously, and... flustered? That made him think she might believe him.
“What do you say now? I know you are seeking knowledge. I can give you that knowledge. You just have to stay here and come to me... Listen to me.”

What Time Forgot Chapter 1
Aaravos x reader
Summary: Viren is being suspicious with all those books he just ruined, and someone recalls a tale of a spell that would cause that damage. Could it be the clue she’s been looking for to track down her love?
Word Count: 1844
Viren wanted to scream when he saw that every text he’d found that referenced Aaravos turned black. “Is nothing safe?!”
“Issues?” a female voice asked.
He whipped around to see a woman standing there in armor similar to his least favorite general’s. “That is none of your concern.”
“Really?” Her eyebrows rose skeptically. “Because it looks like you’ve poured ink on those books, and I know the keeper of this fine library won’t be happy about it.”
“And yet that is still not your business.”
“Whatever you say . . .” Y/E/C eyes rolled as she wandered off.
Leery of being caught by guards, Viren slunk back to his secret chambers to think. Little did he know that the woman, Y/N, moved to look at those ruined texts as soon as the dark mage was gone. That particular style of page-ruining magic struck a nerve with her; it seemed incredibly familiar.
“Aaravos . . .” she breathed thoughtfully. “Why would Viren be looking up a Startouch elf?” Eyes widened. “Unless . . .” She closed her eyes, digging deep into her memory to try and recall what was there scratching at the surface of her mind, begging to be remembered.
It was long before the current generation, during the war of removing humans from all that was magical. And the humans were losing. Badly. Honestly, it had been reluctantly expected given that Xadia had practically all the power with their magic, dragons, and overall experience. In truth, it was a miracle and a testament to how truly conniving the high mage was that they hadn’t lost yet.
He had known they needed help in order to continue holding out, much less to have a prayer of winning. For years, he had heard stories of an elf. A Startouch elf that was able to use all primal sources. And he was supposed to be neutral thus far in the struggle. Finding him and convincing him to join their cause, however, was bound to be a difficult issue.
Which was how that one fateful morning went so far off the rails for Y/N.
For her, the day started lazily--like most days, honestly. As a human firmly on the Xadian side of the border, she didn’t get out much to the nearby elven town. At one point--before the world went to hell--she’d been one of the Crownguard of Katolis. There, in the castle, was where she met the man that was currently acting as her pillow and running his fingers through her hair. With as much time as she spent in the library, it seemed inevitable that they met in the first place.
She lightly dragged her nails across the star-dappled chest, earning a quiet hum. “How long have you been up?” she asked, voice still scratchy from sleep.
“Not long,” that bone-rattling, deep voice replied quietly.
She turned to rest her head on his chest to allow her to meet those golden eyes. “Did we need to do anything today? I feel like we said we did.”
He hummed again, this time in thought. “I believe . . .” his free hand moved up to cup her jaw. “It’s a free day aside from needing to get groceries.”
“And here I was hoping to just stay here all day.”
A low chuckle rumbled through his chest while leaning up so their lips just barely brushed. “I would support that thought, but I’ll give it four minutes before you get hungry.”
Just for that, she defiantly licked his lips, giggling at the slightly disgusted scowl that pulled them down afterwards. Moments later, as an apology, she kissed him sweetly. Of course, that was a slippery slope that led to her being pinned beneath him, hands either clawing at his back or tumbled in his hair.
Eventually, they successfully made it to the town; of course, that was after they’d washed away the evidence of their morning activities. He’d donned his usual plunging tunic, pants, and star-studded cloak while she dressed in the garb of a Moonshadow elf: leggings, boots, and a tank top with her hair braided to be out of her face. She’d worn their style of clothing or a long time since she found it to be the most practical style available among the elves. Besides, everyone in town knew she was human; there was no use hiding it even if there were still some people--mostly the Skywing family--that detested her.
It was overall a peaceful journey with only minor staring. They’d quickly gotten the supplies they needed for the week. Shopkeepers had a tendency to want the pair of them out as fast as possible, what with Y/N’s species and Aaravos’s reputation, but that was fine with them. Neither was fond of chatting with strangers, anyway.
“One last stop,” Y/N breathed. She would be happy to get back to their peaceful house.
Aaravos hummed, as he had a habit of doing. “We just have to pick up that book I ordered.”
“What was it about again?”
“It is an update on the warfront. We may be neutral, but you know how I like to stay updated.”
“Well I suppose we can’t be completely submerged in our little fairytale here. Never been one for doing nothing anyway.”
“Good, because we seem to have guests. Those two ahead, they have a glamor spell on them. That necklace is a moon illusionist’s doing.”
“Been a while since we’ve had a good fight,” she muttered, free hand tightening around a dagger at her waist.
“Now, now, dearest, all in good time,” he chided. “We should at least see what they want first.”
Despite his words, Y/N felt him release the hand he’d been holding. It was a move she was long familiar with; if a fight came forth, he’d need both hands for his magic. “Because that went so well lst time,” she muttered.
The shit-eating smirk on his face was enough to make her roll her eyes. “At least let us lead them out of town. We don’t need to go out of our way to further anger the Skywing.”
“Fair enough.”
“Two of them are circling around in front of us. Third’s still behind,” Y/N reported a few minutes later once they’d reached what was considered the outskirts of town. She’d kissed him on the cheek a few moments prior in order to disguise the process of her looking around.
“Observant as ever, dearest.”
“Okay, now really doesn’t feel like the right time to be flirting,” she snarked back, elbowing him in the side.
“Here we go,” he muttered, changing the tone of the conversation the instant two people--stalkers, her mind provided--blocked their path. “Can we help you?”
“You sure this is the right guy?” one of the stalkers asked, obviously the skittish one of the bunch.
His ‘Moonshadow’ companion scoffed. “Do you see another elf with a human girlfriend?”
“Well . . . no, but--”
“Exactly, this has to be the guy.”
“We are right here,” Y/N sighed. Clearly whoever these guys were, they weren’t professionals. That stung her pride a bit. If this group knew enough about them that one of their members was this skittish, it could be assumed that they knew enough to be more wary of this particular pair. It was a mix of insulting and disappointing, really.
“Right. We were sent by . . .”
And that day deviated wildly from their nice, lazy plans from there. Needless to say, they ended up working for the humans. After the yaers she’d spent ignoring the glares from the elves of their little town, the glares from her former brothers-in-arms did nothing to rattle her, and of course Aaravos was as unshakable as ever. Whispers followed her wherever she went. People called her traitor or worse whenever Aaravos wasn’t around (they weren’t brave enough to do it while he was present) simply because she loved an elf. Of course, she herself thought that their relationship was better suited to be an example that their species could get along and even thrive.
While that relationship flourished as it always had (they’d been together for quite some time, after all), everything else went to shit around them. Because of Aaravos, the humans held their own in the war until the Xadians were willing to come up with an armistice. True to the elven belief that humans were corrupt, they were all too willing to forfeit Aaravos despite all he’d done for them. One of the stipulations for the armistice was that Aaravos would be handed over for the Xadians to punish how they saw fit. Another was that Y/N would never be allowed back in Xadia.
The humans naturally agreed to both clauses.
On their last night together, Aaravos told her of the curse he’d put on his name wherever it appeared in text. Anyone specifically looking for him in human lands would find the pages blackened and unreadable. If they were just reading a random tome in which he appeared, the book would be unaffected--a handy little trick that would help keep from suspicion from arising. It was his way of giving her a fresh start, he explained; no one would be able to connect him with her after enough time had passed.
Provided she wasn’t killed, Y/N would live long enough for the humans to forget. When they initially got together, Aaravos gave her his heart--a crystal he’d used to focus his power when he was young--set into a small silver ring on her finger. To the surprise of them both, she’d stopped aging. It’d seemed like the ring kept her aging to match his in order for them to remain together without the grief that came with loving someone that lived a much shorter life.
As she stood there contemplating things in the present, she thought, That is the only time I’ve ever even heard of such a spell. The odds . . .
She’d tried to find out what the dragon king had done with her lover ever since the day she’d been vanished, but word had never reached the human kingdoms. They seemed to want to forget about the archmage that essentially won their existence for them. Then again, who wouldn’t want to forget that you just offered a virtual hero up like a lamb for slaughter?
Years passed.
Then decades passed.
Eventually, everyone except Katolis’s high council forgot she ever existed.
Then even they forgot.
Just for something to do, she’d eventually rejoined the Crownguard. Surprisingly, she made friends with the children of the king’s advisor. They were good kids, if a little dense at times. Soren was her favorite, naturally; they worked together almost every day, after all. Claudia was a bit too much like her father sometimes for Y/N to be completely comfortable with her, but she tried to be a good influence for the child. Both of the children viewed her as an aunt, and she prided herself in her ability to temper the destructive habits Viren tried to teach them.
Otherwise, her existence largely went unnoticed.
Until she saw those books in the library.

meg what would you do if you finding another mirror that looked all almost identical to the mirror Aaravos was traped it you look at it and it showed a second-star touch elf but looked female
“Hm...well...” Tell Aaravos, right? He knew more about this stuff than she did, even now...but how would he feel seeing that mirror again? And another Startouch elf? He didn’t like his people, she knew...so maybe not.
“I guess the same thing I did when I met Aaravos. Try to communicate.” What could possibly go wrong with that idea?
