so i may have thought abt this a bit :p. something something i am cringe but i am free something something
mostly a Fey (Maya) spread but i got SO EXCITED when i discovered the takahē, so have bonus phoenix
for the feys: honorable mention to eclectus parrots, the belted kingfisher, and the genus phalaropus for being species with brighter females,, and especially to the cardinal for symbolizing a loved one’s spirit being close by in a lot of cultures.,, for now though, i just stuck with crows (and cuz the mia a drew a couple weeks ago could accidentally work as crow wings)

Parrots often turn up as props in European fruit/food feast still life paintings, such as these works by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller (Austrian, 1793-1865):
Tumblr media
1. Fruit Still Life with an Amazon Parrot, 1824
🆔Turquoise-fronted Amazon (Amazona aestiva), native to South America
Tumblr media
2. Still Life with Fruit and Parrot, 1831
🆔female Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus), native to Australasia/Melanesia
(also note the fruiting pineapple plant in both!)

I was wondering if you could help me. I’m making a character and it’s a bird alien, do you know of any bird species where the female is more colorful then the male? people tell me it’s a thing but I can’t find any birds on the matter. Im having a hard time believing it…
It’s pretty uncommon, but the Eclectus parrot is a great example!
Tumblr media
The green bird is a male, the red is the female. The male isn’t particularly dull, but usually really vibrant reds or blues are found in males, not females.

ornithologists: ok so the male birds are more vibrant and unnatural (reds, yellows, blues, etc) colors to attract potential mates, and the female birds are more dull or natural colors (greens, browns, etc) to blend in with their surroundings.
eclectus parrots: *exist*
ornithologists: tf

Moluccan Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus)
Tumblr media
"just read about em in a book and they're so fascinating! the males and females are completely different colors to the point scientists assumed they were different species for years. they are also unique in that their babies are born sexually dimorphic in their colors! overall very interesting little guys" "I own one. He’s loud. I love him. Also they’re one of the only kinds of parrots with sexual dimorphism. Look em up. They both look crazy different. In fact, they thought they were two different kinds of birds for a loooong time."
The breeding behavior for this species is wild. Females are thought to be so brightly colored as they will guard the entrance to their nest cavity for up to 11 months at a time. The coloration serves as a deterrent to other females, but also highlights her presence to males in the area. One female eclectus can have multiple males that feed and mate with her, and males will take care of multiple females at a time as well. The male's green coloration helps to camouflage him against the leaves and trees as he forages. It is noted that the plumage of both sexes is quite spectacular when viewed under ultraviolet light, a type of light that they predators (hawks and owls) cannot see in.
"Adult females with poor nest hollows often commit infanticide on the male, if they produce both a male and a female chick. Inadequate nest hollows have a habit of flooding in heavy rain, drowning the chicks or eggs inside. This reported infanticide in wild pairs may be the result of other causes, since this behavior where the hen selectively kills male chicks is not observed in captive birds."

FEMALE AM HAS BIRDS :0 CAN WE HEAR ABOUT THEM
YESSS YES OFC I WAS JUST ABOUT TO MAKE A POST ABOUT THEM !!! (Ik I’m reposting some of these drawings but shhh they’re good refs for how she interacts with them)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her first bird is Mortimer, an Umbrella Cockatoo she rescued from a pretty awful home :( She found him in an exotic pet store and just kind… knew she wanted him. He’s very loyal but is a bit of a wimp, especially when it comes to vet visits and baths
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Second bird is Beatrice, a Hyacinth Macaw she bought from a breeder. Beatrice is a very dramatic, petty bird, but Adeline honestly loves her for it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her last bird is Lukyan, an Eclectus parrot! She was offered him by a neighbor in her apartment that was moving out and needed to re-home him. Without much question, she took him in.
All of her birds are MORE than precious to her. She talks to them like they’re people and treats them as such, making sure they have all the room and toys they could ever want.
She loves talking about them and shows off her injuries from them like they’re some sort of trophy. She always has at least one on her shoulder, if not all of them somewhere near her. She has a hired sitter for them when she’s out (probably just a neighbor of hers or a friend) and adores educating people about them.
The first time she met Mortimer he nearly bit her finger off. He was so raggedy and scared, with plucked feathers and tired eyes.
Beatrice was kept in the tiniest cage imaginable, having faded colors and lots of scarring on her stomach and feet.
Lukyan was so frail and skinny when she took him in. She cursed the neighbor that gave him to her out when she saw the state he was in, happy to have them moving out.
She treats these things more like family than pets. They have their own room, set up with a treat dispenser separate cages and bathrooms, the whole shebang. Cannot express how well she does taking care of them, sometimes putting their luxuries over her own.
They have spa days and a really well set routine. Her neighbors kinda hate her for the noise but she (somehow) gets away with it (she bribes their tenant)
And yes, she did teach all of them how to say swear words.

Hi! We became mutuals recently. I like your blog. Hope you don’t expire from summer heat.
If you don’t mind answering, why did you choose Macaw wings? For that wing poll thing.
So far so good! Kind of. We're good on temperature but we're getting a lot of the smoke blown down from Canada's wildfires so my lungs aren't appreciating the air quality.
As for the question itself: I'm afraid you've just activated my trap card (talking about birds)
See, I love vibrant loud colors. However, maintaining dyed hair? A miserable fucking task. Similarly, I don't dress as ostentatiously as I'd like to, between work and budget and self image stuff.
So hypothetical bird wings it is. And when it comes to nice colors, macaws have NO WRONG ANSWERS!
Putting the rest under a cut because I'm going to be rambling
Scarlet macaw, most people's first association? Magnificent.
Tumblr media
Blue and gold macaw? Gorgeous.
Tumblr media
Hyacinth macaw? Elegant and luxurious
Tumblr media
The seriously endangered but recently reintroduced to the wild Spix's macaw, of Rio fame? Charming
Tumblr media
Military macaw? Wow!!
Tumblr media
Even assuming the genie is an asshole goes for a hybrid, which tend to be more drab...
Tumblr media
SURPRISE, NO THEY'RE NOT!
SO in my humble opinion, macaws are the best choice.
Also a special shoutout to my second choice, the eclectus:
Tumblr media
The female (which I'm assuming I would get, being a cis lady) is the purple and red one. Ain't she pretty?

I would like to trouble you once more with a request of animals for which the female is either larger or more brightly colored than the male, such as the Wilson's Phalarope or the Eclectus parrot
Sure thing!
Of course, with most spiders, the females are larger. As with ladybird spiders...

Male ladybird spiders mimic ladybird beetles (ladybugs), while the larger females do not.

Greater Painted-Snipe (Rostratula benghalensis), male (back) and female (front), family Rostratulidae, Pathum Thani Rice Research Center, Thailand
Females are more colorful than the males. The females court the males, and are polyandrous (having multiple mates). The males incubate the nest and raise young.

With many snakes, the females are larger, as with garter snakes...

I made an OC. Rare occurrence for me. I decided Edgeworth 100% has a female eclectus parrot. I have also made a very extensive headcanon I should definitely write a fic about
Tumblr media
This is her. At least the concept for her. One day I'll have the time and energy to expand and do a cleaner drawing of her.
Her harness cravat is an addition I'm very proud of.
I am literally obsessed with eccies. My dream bird is a female eccy. I have been researching and consuming so much media surrounding these birds for like a year. I have decided 100% once I live in a place I can appropriately bird proof and provide the space she deserves, I will get one.
It was when watching a video on training them like the fun kind for mental stimulation I had the idea for Edgeworth. Obviously the fact they're red and blue is a part of it, but also the typical character traits of a female eccy would so suit Edgeworth, at least in my own interpretation of Edgeworth. Although in reality every individual bird is different and it's not guaranteed they present these traits, in my hc she got a lot of them.
