#female characters like this get destroyed when they get written by male characters like Michael Waldron

Thank you!
She was nothing more than a motive for the male rep protagonist at the end of the day.
Personally, for me, that's the most misogynistic thing you can do to a female character. Make her strengths and characteristics solely a direct means to make the male 'better' in some way.
However, I have to also say that I don't think it's always that people just dislike her for the same things he does. I think it's sometimes that she gets away with acting in a similar way and getting significantly less punishment than he does.
He gets beaten up and punished for doing the exact same thing she does. But no one ever actually calls her out.
There are certainly a lot of fans who judge her too harshly because of misogyny, but I also think we have to take into consideration that she gets off the hook when he doesn't.
People vilanizing female characters for the same reasons they love the male ones is bad, but you know what's also really annoying and I don’t see anyone talking about? When the character actually has issues, either in the sense that she's a shitty person, or was written badly, or both, but the fandom STILL picks the misogynistic reasons to hate her, and it makes criticizing her without sounding like a jerk extremely difficult.

SYLVIA SCARLETT (1935)
Director: George Cukor
Cast: Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Brian Aherne, Edmund Gwenn, Dennie Moore, Natalie Paley
A young girl disguises as a boy in order to escape the police.
This is one of my favorite movies. Which is pretty hilarious because this movie was completely panned when it came out and it actually lost $363,000. Katharine Hepburn, asked producers to destroy the film and offered to do another movie for free. Cukor would never be hired at RKO again. Wild!!
This movie is credited as the start of Katharine becoming "box office poison". Hepburn would later say you'd have to have something wrong with you to love this movie. I don't disagree, haha. There's something seriously wrong with me.
Didn't learn this until recently but blew my mind - this movie is adapted from a novel published in 1918. Imagine how ahead of its time this story was then, when it was still considered so in 1935! This makes it all the more important to remember that many of the terms we would use to describe today, didn't exist then. Even concepts of sex, gender, sexuality where not distinctly defined from one another. Which all affects how you might code a character who prefers the same sex and/or does not conform to gender.
According to a TCM article, the movie's "sexual politics were ahead of its time". For example, Hepburn's character continues to dress in men's clothes even after the character didn't have to any longer completely. That utterly confused audiences at the time. Audiences would also walk out when it showed that both male and female characters were attracted to Hepburn's character.
I re-watched this with someone unfamiliar with older movies and they saw Michael Fane (played by Brian Aherne) as "negging" Scarlett's character. However, Fane's whining about Scarlett was not intended to get her interested in him (like toxic goofy-ass dating "experts" would advise). If intentions didn't matter and it's just about slinging insults - any enemy to lovers trope would fall under negging. But, yanno, context...
With added context, Fane was actually interested in Sylvester and initially loses interest in them as Sylvia. It was almost night and day on first meeting "Sylvester" versus "Sylvia". His spiel on women was to indicate his past experience with Lily which he is unjustifiably attributing to all women. Beyond that, it also characterizes his disinterest in women, which is in opposition to what he is supposed to feel as a man. Thus he reluctantly chases Lily (the one who embodies the feminine ideal), yet never Sylvia despite Fane having been real keen when they were Sylvester. Note that he also starts to warm back up to Sylvia in men's clothes, hm? And both characters on their escapade begin to realize they are more compatible with each other (versus the conman Monkley or the manipulative Lily). Imagine the audience reaction at the time - though you don't have to try so hard as there were plenty of written feedback (featured in the last link).
This is only half-baked in my mind at the moment but I think Monkley and Lily may both loosely represent what their respective sexes should be to a toxic extreme. While Fane is stuck in jail with Sylv he realizes their kindness and gushes over Sylv (yup, in men’s wear). “Clumsy, impetuous, generous, warm-hearted fool...” And Monkley realizes Lily is perfect for him because they are both terrible and lets Fane and Sylv run off. The message, to me, becomes about finding someone who shares the same values you do rather than the ideal "man" or "woman"!
This gets pretty dark for a comedy, specifically the side story about Scarlett's father. So general warning for that!
The "French" makes me wheeze every time I hear it. hahaha.
This movie would later inspire the musical comedy Victor/Victoria (1982) starring Julie Andrews.
TCM Comments on Sylvia Scarlett (1935)
"The Men Who Made the Movies" portion with George Cukor on 'Sylvia Scarlett'
"A Woman's Lot" portion with Katharine Heburn talking about 'Sylvia Scarlett'

Books “Read” in 2020
Previous entries: 2019, 2018, 2017
I don’t rank these based on actual literary quality, but by how much i enjoyed reading/listening to them. Hopefully with Audible’s new “Premium Included” feature it would cut down on so many Average/Below Average books next year, it’ll give me more of a choice on what kind of books/podcasts i want to listen to rather than given a handful to pick from a month.
The “Top 10″
Forging Hephaestus / Bones of the Past: Villains' Code Series - Drew Hayes has became one of my fav authors over the past couple years, from his Vampire Accountant series, 5-min Sherlock, and his Spells, Swords, and Stealth books. FH is one of the few times he wrote Adult Fiction. This is the second time Drew created a world of super heroes (the YA Superpowereds), thus previous experience in dealing with the nuisances and meta of super meta dynamics. I love the main character, Tori, and especially love many of the side characters (like Ivan) and the comedy is the right tone of dark and not-in-your-face (not quite as well -written as something like The Venture Bros or The Tick, but being adult fiction you can get away with having characters named Johnny Three-Dicks and Captain Bullshit)
Dreadnought / Sovereign - the second super hero series I’ve placed on my top list this year, this one is Young Adult. This one is far more serious and deals heavily in issues like trans and women’s rights, mental abuse, and social acceptance. The main character is full of angst, but that should be a given for a 15 yo with lots of mental baggage and new social pressures. The main character is the main draw, most of the side characters are a bit more one-dimensional.
The Trouble with Peace: Age of Madness, Book 2. It isn’t a “First Law” book if you don’t want to strangle half of the main characters. Many are stepping outside of the shadow of the previous generation and finding themselves falling flat on their faces. If they aren’t at each other’s throats, they would soon have to deal with rebellion in the streets and the constant looming presence of Bayaz, who waits to sweep the board clear and rearrange the pieces the way he sees fit.
Michael J. Sullivan’s: The Riyria and Legend of the First Empire Books.
Riyria Revelations: Theft of Swords / Rise of Empire / Heir of Novron
Riyria Chronicles: The Crown Tower / The Rose and Thorn / The Death of Dulgath
Age of Death / Age of Empyre, Pile of Bones
After finishing the Legend of the First Empire books that came out earlier this year, I went ahead and read the prior series that takes place in the same world. I would suggest reading the entire series by Publish order, but they can be read Chronologically. I read the Legends books first, and it helped me see where Sullivan was heading and when he started to plan out the Legends books in more detail. (The early cameo of the Main characters from Legends in a mural in Heir of Novron, and knowing who is behind the events in Dulgath)
The Dresden Files: Peace Talks / Battle Grounds - They really should be read as one book, because that was how they were written. It is a Feast of Crows / Dances with Dragons situation, where the book got too long and got split up. The fans are pretty divided by the book(s) ending and how some of the main characters are handled, but these are Jim Butcher’s characters not theirs and he can drop bridges on whom ever he wants.
What Lies Beyond: Cycle of Galand, Book 6 - This is a “mythology” book (like Sullivan’s Age of Death was) where it introduces most of the Pantheon of their religion and corrects much of the mythology that had been lost over the decades. They seek a weapon to vanquish the Litch and save their world and the afterlife from oblivion, but not all of their Gods are happy about it.
Will Destroy the Galaxy for Cash - Yahtzee (Zero Punctuation!) has to be one of my favorite internet personalities for the past 10+ years, and I eat up every book he puts out and because he wrote the books, and is an actor himself, he could deliver the lines as they are intended to be. The sequel to Will Save the Galaxy for Food does not disappoint and even ups the stakes from the previous book.
The Girl Who Drank the Moon - This has to be one of the most charming books I’ve read. It is magic and wonder at it’s finest, no need for long explanations on how the world works. If you like Ghibli movies, you’ll be interested in this book. It has its dark moments but isn’t outside of what you’ll find in something like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Nausicca.
The Goblin Emperor - the youngest son of the Elf King finds himself emperor after the death of his father and brothers in an assassination. The only problem is, that he is only half-elf... his late mother was a Goblin, and he had been in exile as an embarrassment to the family for most of his life. He knows nothing of how the courts work and what’s left of his own family work against him just for being who he is.
Lost Gods: Brom - I liked this book more than I did American Gods (which I read a few years ago). It is darker and bleaker by the bucket loads. One of the few books with a downer ending that I actually liked. I would compare this book to books like All the Pretty Horses and No Country for Old Men-- but it is a Fantasy!
Above Average.
Siege Tactics (Spells, Swords, & Stealth. Book 4)  - What happens to adventurers after they retire? A fun concept that is explored with our party of NPCs running across a town full of epic-level characters that no longer have a player.
The Arthurian Saga - The Crystal Cave / The Hollow Hills  / The Last Enchantment / The Wicked Day - A more realistic version of the Arthurian tales, taking the POV of Merlin, bastard son of a princess, as he earns notoriety as a scholar and wizard.  The Wicked Day takes the POV of Mordred, making him far more sympathetic than other iterations of his character.
Arc of a Scythe - Scythe / Thunderhead / The Toll - Science and Technology eliminates death and in order to prevent over population and complacency an order of grim reapers are chosen to randomly deal out quotas of permanent deaths. An example of what happens when every need and want is satisfied by a higher force and the apathy that causes rot in human society and the superiority complex of those in charge of life and death.
The Diviners / Lair of Dreams / Before the Devil Breaks You / The King of Crows - Horror during the Roaring 20′s. Tackles issues as Racism, Poverty, Government Secrecy, Christian-Evangelical Cults, Nationalism Cult Mentality, Communism, Labor Unions, Eugenics, Post-WW1 trauma... It could almost pass as an adult fiction book. I wouldn’t recommend giving it to someone under High school age.
Ancillary Justice / Ancillary Sword / Ancillary Mercy - Artificial Intelligence takes over human bodies as a form of capital punishment, controlling ships and space stations. The dominate human empire outgrew the need to label any gender, using “she” to refer to everyone rather than the vaguer “them/they” pronouns, and only outlying colonies stick to the binary ideals. Think of “The Left Hand of Darkness” but on a more broader scale and as the default majority/ruling empire. Toss in a solid military action novel on top and it isn’t nearly as boring as Left Hand.
Children of Time / Children of Ruin - War destroys the human population of Earth and those that remain are the ones that headed out to the stars on tera-forming missions. A virus created to advance life forms to prepare a world for human habitation runs amuck with out its overseers, creating intelligent arachnids, crustaceans, and squid.
The Licanius Trilogy - The Shadow of What Was Lost / An Echo of Things to Come / The Light of all that Falls -  It is very heavy on info overload, there is a lot to keep track of, so much so there is a summary of book one and two at the start of the third. I like the twist at the end of the first book and that the villain is actually trying to help save the world, and you spend most of the second stuck between who thinks they are doing the right thing and who is actually doing the right thing - a lot to talk about doing the lesser of two evils.
Mythos - Steven Fry - A humorous retelling of Greek mythology. I read Mythology - by Edith Hamilton prior to this book, which is a more scholarly take on the myths, and helps if you are unfamiliar with classical mythology prior to reading Fry’s take on it.
Iron, Fire and Ice: The Real History That Inspired Game of Thrones - a nice history book about Iron Age royalty. It is actually refreshing to read after going through so much faux fiction that is in Philippa Gregory’s books.
Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? - Children ask questions to a Mortician about death and what happens to bodies after people die. I listened to her autobiography last year/year before and it is worth picking up this one along with it.
Average, but still good.
Jack Campbell’s Lost Fleet Universe: Triumphant (Genesis Fleet, Book 3) / Tarnished Knight: Lost Stars, book 1 - The realistic space battles just drag me back in each and every time.
The Case of the Damaged Detective: 5-Minute Sherlock - Drew Hayes can’t write a boring book. It isn’t quite on point as his other series, but still fun to read. Hayes is really good at making YA books with Adult Protagonists. It is a road-trip book, the main character is a washed-out operative that is getting his second chance playing bodyguard and future assistant to the 5-minute Sherlock.
Locked In / Head On - Do you remember “Surrogates”? that Bruce Willis movie where people walk around in robotic avatars, well... it’s almost the same thing. A virus kills millions, save for a select few that experience “lock in” syndrome and are able to connect to robots via their brains and the internet.  The main character is gender neutral and you get a choice to listen to the book with a male or female reader.
Murder by Other Means: The Dispatcher Book 2 - more John Scalzi! The first book was in my top list a few years ago, and i enjoyed the sequel just as much. Between Scalzi’s The Dispatcher and Locked In series, i like the Dispatcher more.
The Shattered Sea Trilogy: Half a King / Half the World / Half a War - Joe Abercrombie’s attempt to make Young Adult books. It keeps all the grim dark, but lacks all the swearing and humor that made The First Law books more enjoyable. Many of Joe’s favorite character tropes are still present and is one of the better “Fall to Darkness” stories I’ve read. It also has different POV characters each book and is one of those “faux fantasy” settings.
Mage Errant: Books 1, 2 & A Traitor in Skyhold: Book 3 - If you are wanting to get away from Harry Potter, pick up this book series. It takes place in magic school, but it is its own world and setting and not just a hidden world within our own. The main group of kids are misfits among the school, unable to master their powers, that get taken up by the badass librarian to be trained in more unconventional ways.
Dawn of Wonder: The Wakening Book 1 - the main character has ptsd from growing up in an abusive household, and i thought it was handled rather well. He would be rather competent and cleaver most of the time until he gets triggered into an episode, he fights really hard to overcome this short-falling of his. Standard classic affair else wise, family leaves home because the local authority figure doesn’t want them around anymore, goes to big city, kid wants to do good and avenge the deaths he was accused of, joins the badass school of hard knocks...  big powerful evil thing trying to consume the world.
The Rage of Dragons - It shares a lot of tropes and story points with Red Rising... just in a fantasy setting, not in space. If you are wanting fantasy with POC main characters and a non-European-centric culture, that doesn’t pull any punches, give it a shot.
Earthsea - Tehanu and Tales from Earthsea - I had read the first three books several years back, and i did re-read them in order to refresh myself prior to reading the final two.
The Secret Garden - I absolutely loved the movie from the 90′s as a kid, and finally got around to listening to the book.
Six of Crows - A heist book in fantasy world with the magic users being heavily “Jewish / Slavic” coded by how they are treated and persecuted. I might have thought more favorably about the book if i hadn’t read other books with “street rat slum” main characters. (Seriously, after spending six books with Royce in Riyria someone like Kas is just second bananas)
Unconventional Heroes / Two Necromancers - Comedic Fantasy, the humor’s not on par with say MogWorld, and has more jokes than Fred The Vampire Accountant. It is still a parody of villains and heroes in fantasy worlds. I would find it safe for a 12/13yo to read, cursing and all, though they might not be aware of many of the tropes that are being deconstructed. The reader of the book did better in this one then he did with Six of Crows and Beezer, still the audio needed some editing because it repeats itself a few times.
Once More Upon A Time (Free Audio Book)  - I don’t always care to read romance stories. I like the idea behind it however, to trade their love for each other in order to save their partner’s life, then learn to re-love one another again.
Monster Hunter International - If you think Dresden is too liberal, this takes a hard turn to the right.. replace the magic with GUNS, lots and lots of GUNS. An organization that hates the government but hunts monsters for government bounties. The main cast is multi-ethnic and they do make fun of that at one point. There isn’t a lot of thought into the plot, because action is #1, but it is fun enough to ignore the politicking.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Collection - i bitched about there not being an omnibus last year, and then Audible uploaded one. The ending is still one big clusterfuck.
Stephen King’s Insomnia - this book is the bridge between Steven King’s two universes. It is a sequel to IT and brings up the Darktower often. IT dealt mainly with childhood fears, Insomnia deals with Elderly and feminine fears.
D’Arc / Culdesac: War with No Name - I liked D’Arc more than i did Mort-e, and Culdesac is more on track with Mort-e. The virus that mutated the ants and animals reminded me of the virus from Children of Time/Ruin, even though i read Mort-e first, reading D’Arc after CoT let me notice it.
Michael McDowell’s:  The Amulet / The Elementals / Gilded Needles / Blackwater - From the guy that wrote the screenplay of Beetlejuice, and the pioneer of the Southern Gothic Horror. Gilded Needles is a bit out of place, taking place in 1890′s, and is more of a social horror rather than a super natural horror the other books are.
Gardens of the Moon: The Malazan Book of the Fallen, Book 1 - high fantasy dark fiction. if you really want some CHONKY door stoppers, there’s over 10 of them in this series. Could’ve done less with the manipulative bastard mage that speaks in 3rd person. I had read The Willful Child, an attempted comedy science fiction novel by the same author, and it showed that the author was unfamiliar with that kind of genera and should stick to grim fantasy.
The Knife’s Edge / Citadel of Fire: The Ronin Saga - This is one of those series that I’m always going “oh, that reminds me of [insert another better series]”  At times it reminded me of The Licanius Trilogy, Shades of Magic, Arc of Scythe, Riyria, Korra... It is just shy of being as good as them, and is rather firmly in that Sci-Fi Fantasy Ghetto and has a bit of “anime” feel to it with their magic users having ‘power levels’ and the power creep.
In Calabria - My only problem with the book is the massive age-gap between the Main character and his love interest. Outside of that, the whole Unicorns in the modern world concept is done very well.
Pout Neuf (Audible Free Book)  - Journalism and romance during WW2. A quick read and the book really shows that research had been done about the setting and time period.
Nut Jobs: Cracking California's Strangest $10 Million Dollar Heist: An Audible Original - Not only does it talk about the heist, it actually touches on the subject of migrant farmers and slave labor, as well as the desertification of the California Valley.
The Science of Sci-Fi: From Warp Speed to Interstellar Travel (Free Audio Book) - a neat little informative podcast if you are looking for an introduction to some of the harder science fiction.
Mythology - by Edith Hamilton - Text book about Greek Mythology. Like “used in schools” text book. It is a good read if you don’t want to go through Ovid, Virgil, Homer, and all the other classical writers on your own.
The Space Race: An Audible Original - America didn’t win the Space Race. Russia did just about everything first. The only thing we did first was put people on the moon. It also goes into detail about how the inventor of the Nazi’s V2 rockets became employed with the US Space program. As well as the government’s announcement to let space travel become privatized.
Pale Blue Dot / Cosmos: A Personal Voyage - It’s Carl Sagan. Come on! Everyone should be reading them. Pale Blue Dot was being turned into an Audiobook in the 90′s but with Sagan’s death, only the first few chapters were read by him and his partner reads the rest of it (she does a decent job, and i understand why they wanted her to read it, it should’ve been done similarly to Cosmos, with guest readers doing each chapter)
Thicker Than Water (Free Audio Book)  - start up pharmaceutical company scams people out of millions with promises of a miracle machine that was ahead of its time. Story told from the whistleblower himself as he recounts what his job was within the company and how he knew the owner/founder of the company and how coming out about what was going on ruined his relationship with his family and friends.
Don't Panic: Douglas Adams and the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - biography on Douglas Adams and the history behind the creative process behind the Hitchhiker’s Guide series.
The Genius of Birds - It reminded me a lot of “The Soul of an Octopus” in quality. It is rather informative about birds, how they behave, and how we judge intelligence in non-human animals.
It’s “ok.”
Les Miserabes - I can see why people favor movies and theater versions because of how dense the book is, getting the cliff notes version of the book instead of reading several chapters about the Battle of Waterloo.
Viva Durant and the Secret of the Silver Buttons (Audible Free Book) - It’s cute, and I spent the next several weeks humming that freaking song.
Challenger Deep - A book about mental illness by the same person that brought us The Arc of a Scythe series. It isn’t a bad read, but if you are prone to get panic attacks and have mental illness yourself, you might get too into it and make you uneasy. It can help with neurotypical people with understanding how some illnesses work.
Into the Wilds (Warriors, Book 1)  - Ah, the cat book. It is prob because there are soooo many books in this series that it over-saturates the kids impressionable minds.
House of Teeth (Audible Free Book)  - I read this book prior to Monster Hunter International, and thinking back on this one, i am reminded about the other. Save for this one is PG. So... the kid friendly version.
The Martian Chronicles - Space Horror, on Mars. If you like old science fiction, like Classic Trek, Wells, or Forbidden Planet stuff. There is a lot of zerust.
Andrea Vernon and the Corporation for UltraHuman Protection - The third superhero series I’ve read this past year. It is not as ground breaking nor subversive as Villain’s Code or Dreadnought. The humor is a bit too forced and parts of it falls into “we can be more offensive because it is an adult book” category.
Interview with the Robot - Don’t really care for books or programs that are set up in the “interview” format where it is two people talking to one another. (I have no fucking idea how this book got top Kids book of the year on Audible, it is more of a YA book... it must been because it was Free and lots of people picked it because the rest of the choices that month were complete garbage)
Micromegas - perhaps one of the oldest examples of Speculative Science Fiction. Written by Voltaire, it is about a giant from another solar system that is so big that humans and life on Earth are microscopic. “what value are the lives of ants to a man?”
The Three Musketeers - i had forgotten how much espionage there was in this book. I would say this is a good companion book to Don Quixote, as it takes its fair share of inspiration from and even name-drops the character a couple times.
Charles Dickens: Oliver Twist / David Copperfield / A Tale of Two Cities - DC is the standout IMO among the three, it is Dickens’ Magnum Opus. Les Mis did a far better job with the Revolution than Tale did as well. I felt rather obligated to reading these books because of the subplot in the Age of Madness books being about Poverty during the Industrial Revolution and Workers Revolts against the Ruling Class.
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - the version i listened too made most of the Americans sound like GWB... which is funny because one of them is Canadian, and the Comic Relief character about how boorish Americans are.
Stuck (Free Audio Book) -  it is a neat idea, getting jarred free of time but everybody else isn’t and doesn’t remember. It gets a little heavy for a kids book near the end, edging into YA territory as the character gets older mentally and the people around him age physically.
Phreaks (Free Audio Book) - i knew a lot about Captain Crunch and other phone hackers of the 60′s. There is a subplot of the big radioactive corporation covering up causing cancer to their workers, and the father (voiced by Christian Slater) being in the closet but still homophobic about it.
Silverswift (Free Audio Book) - If you like fairy tales set in modern times, it is worth a look. It is similar to In Calabira in that way. The mom being the nonbeliever and thinking grandma is off her rocker, but the granddaughter knows it in her bones that grandma is telling the truth.
Sleeping Giants - alien mechs from the distant past, once mistaken as the titans and gods form mythology, now being studied and experimented on by the government. This is another “interview style” story telling.
Celtic Mythology: Tales of Gods, Goddesses, and Heroes - there is a lot of names and stories, it is worth prob getting a physical copy of the book to keep things straight and to use as a reference.
How to Defeat a Demon King in Ten Easy Steps - A love letter to The Legend of Zelda’s Ocarina of Time and other RPG games.
Casino Royal: James Bond - the movie was rather faithful, including the part of being tied to a chair. I do wish they kept more of the book’s ending where Bond was ready to retire prior to his secret-spy love interest gets killed.
Aliens: Bug Hunt - a compilation of Alien stores about people landing on various planets and encountering aliens, not always the Xenomorphs we know, but the term “Bug” came synonymous to any dangerous alien lifeforms encountered.
Macbeth: A Novel - retelling the story of Macbeth but in a novel form. If you can’t get past the language of the original play, this would help. It sets it more firmly in historical fiction.
Hannibal: A Novel -  I went ahead and re watched the tv show after finishing the book. I’ve seen the movie a dozen times, and i understand why they changed the ending to the movie. The book is the main one that characterizes Hannibal and the show uses a lot of the plot. Hannibal Rising wasn’t really needed because Hannibal (in this book) does think/talk about what happened to his sister and home, and i can see why Harris didn’t want to write that book either. The audiobook is rather poor quality, they talked too fast in places and i don’t really care for their acting...
The Power of Six - I read I am Number 4 several years back and this one popped up on sale so i nabbed it. I like Neil Kaplan, and i think this one is better than the first one and actually gets into the meat of the story.
Cut and Run: A Light-Hearted Dark Comedy - body parts harvesting.... mmmm.
Calypso - non-Fiction, biography of the author. Talks about his family, his life with his partner, and what he does. Much of it is charming and it is read by the author. this was prior to him loosing his marbles about retail workers and becoming a karen.
Our Harlem: Seven Days of Cooking, Music and Soul at the Red Rooster - the history of Harlem and the Harlem Renaissance. I didn’t mind this podcast so much because i was reading The Diviners during the same time.
Malcolm and Me - another biographical book. one of the free books i got during Feb’ Black History Month.
History of Bourbon (Free Audio Book) - Informative about the liqueur industry in America.
Junkyard Cats: Shining Smith Book 1 - post apocalyptic action science fiction novel. the moment that guy showed up i was “that’s your bf.” and it was so... the plot wasn’t hard to figure out, it’s all about the action and setting.
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress - One of the better Heinlein books. The man can’t write romance and he is rather big on casual polygamy and open marriages. An anarchist-revolution book written by someone that is more on the Libertarian side of the aisle. Mycroft (the computer) comes off as rather antiquated, an AI that runs on a closed server, communicating through the telephone lines and printed paper, makes me wonder what Heinlein would’ve done if he was told about the internet and Deep Fake tech. (the book takes place in like 2075, but written in 1966)
Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World - the production of coffee and it’s prevalence around the world.
The Life and Times of Prince Albert - Exactly what it says on the can. *rimshot*
The Real Sherlock: An Audible Original - a biography of Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle.
The Design of Everyday Things - using psychology to improve the design of systems, products, and the modern business model.  It gives proper terminology for several common design features and how to improve on existing structures.
Bottom of the Barrel.
The Pagan World: Ancient Religions before Christianity. I was hoping there would have been something in there about European Religions, there isn’t, and the book was mostly Greek and Roman life styles and how gods are worshiped. It let me know where the word “auger” came from and why it was used in the Licanius Trilogy.
Life Ever After - disjointed at best. a couple that aren’t good for each other spend the next several hundred years in a crappy relationship.
Beyond Strange Lands: An Audible Original - The audio was complete crap on half of the voices. Which is bad because this could’ve been better. It is a Pod Cast Show and the director couldn’t make sure everybody had decent recording equipment and the sound effects often drown out the actors.
Henrietta & Eleanor: A Retelling of Jekyll and Hyde: An Audible Original Drama - They were going for a modern telling, but the language used is archaic. They speak like Dickens characters even though they talk about cellphones and computers.
A Crazy Inheritance: The Ghostsitter book 1 - The concept is there, but it is too nerfed. It was made for the 8-12yo crowd in mind by people that don’t know how to write for children.
Tell Me Lies (Free Audio Book) - It really wants to be smart. Who’s playing who and who is the actual villain of this story? If you want a quick “who done it?” maybe look into it.
Evil Eye (Free on Audible Plus) - told through phone calls between a mother and daughter. The whole genera of evil boyfriends/husbands isn’t really my cup of tea, and the boyfriend’s actor was too fake and the set up to the meat of the story was annoying.
The Half-life of Marie Curie - I didn’t mind learning stuff about Marie Curie... falls squarely in “made for TV lifetime movie” quality though. You should not carry around a vile of uranium where ever you go.
Alone with the Stars - A girl in Florida hears the call for help from Amelia Earhart, but nobody listens to her. Part fiction, part biographical. It would’ve been better as a biography and talking about various conspiracy theories about what happened to her and finding the pieces of the airplane.
Beezer - The son of the Devil learning to become a good person with a found family... however, most of the characters are annoying.
The Year of Magical Thinking (Free Audio Book) - very heavy on the subjects about loss and death.
Complete Garbage.
The Getaway (Free Audio Book) - A man being a POS by stalking and abducting women. It broadcasts just about everything that is going to happen.
Agent 355 (Free Audio Book)  - Do you like “American Mythology?” Like the whole “the founders are the greatest people in the world” kind of vibe? I don’t. I also hate the main character for being one of those “i’m smart, because i read books that women aren’t supposed to” girls when she doesn’t really think for herself at all.

Good Omens, Queerbaiting And Death Of The Author - Quill’s Scribbles
Tumblr media
I confess this is the most reluctant I’ve ever been to write a Scribble. When this topic came up, I remember just groaning and putting my head in my hands because I knew that, due to the nature of what I tend to write about on this blog and the fact that I’m an out and out biromantic demisexual queerbo, people would be asking me to contribute to the discourse. And honestly I don’t particularly want to. I don’t get to enjoy many films and TV shows anymore thanks to the industry doing their very best to ruin everything they touch. Can’t I just watch one good TV show without being dragged into some ideological battle?
Okay. Guess I can’t really put this off any longer.
On the 31st May, the long awaited adaptation of Good Omens was released on Amazon Video. I thought it was quite good. Not perfect. There are some things I could criticise, but overall it was a worthy adaptation of the source material and it was very enjoyable to watch. And that seems to be the general consensus with both critics and fans. However over the past couple of months since its release, a ‘controversy’ began to emerge within the fandom regarding the show’s main characters Aziraphale and Crowley. See, a large proportion of both the media and the Good Omens fanbase have interpreted the angel/demon double act as being gay, but this has sparked a backlash from some fans with them going so far as to accuse the show of queerbaiting as the show never explicitly confirms the characters’ sexuality. This then led to a backlash to the backlash, sparking a whole debate as to what constitutes good LGBT representation. Not only that, Neil Gaiman, the showrunner and original co-author of Good Omens, has stubbornly refused to confirm one way or the other whether or not Aziraphale and Crowley are more than just good friends, which has added further fuel to the fire.
Now before we go any further, I just want to disavow one argument that I see cropping up a lot and that really gets under my skin. That Aziraphale and Crowley can’t possibly be gay because they’re not men. They’re genderless beings that feel no sexual attraction. The implication being that the characters are asexual, but the way you hear people going on about it, the Ineffable Husbands seem less asexual and more like soulless robots. First off, you do know asexual people feel love too, right? We’re not Vulcans. Second, can we stop this ridiculous logic that they can’t be gay because they’re not men? It reminds me of the ‘controversy’ that surrounded Mass Effect 3 when BioWare confirmed that you could play as a gay male Commander Shepard. When people pointed out to the critics and haters that you could already play as a gay Shepard if you picked FemShep and pursued Liara, they retorted by saying that Liara doesn’t count as a woman because she’s a ‘monogendered alien.’ And my response to that was... so? She still looks like a woman and she still uses female pronouns. If FemShep is attracted to her, there’s a good chance she might be gay. It really is that simple. Aziraphale and Crowley may be genderless, but they look like men and use male pronouns. So if they were attracted to each other, they just might be gay. Period.
Anyway. Tangent over. Lets talk about Aziraphale and Crowley. You might be wondering where I stand on this whole issue. Do I believe that Aziraphale and Crowley are gay? Well honestly it depends on which version we’re talking about here. If we’re talking about the book version, I would say probably not. Don’t get me wrong. I’m almost certain book Aziraphale is gay as there are a number of references that seem to suggest that. His bookshop is in Soho, which is famous for its thriving LGBT community, the narrator mentions him going to a ‘discreet gentlemen’s club’ in the 1800s, and there’s of course this brilliant line:
“Many people, meeting Aziraphale for the first time, formed three impressions: that he was English, that he was intelligent, and that he was gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide.”
So yeah. There was never a doubt in my mind that book Aziraphale was gay. (And before anyone comments saying that the next line mentions that Aziraphale isn’t gay because angels are sexless unless they make the effort, let me ask you something. Who, out of all the characters in the book, does he make a genuine effort for? Aha!). Book Crowley on the other hand isn’t quite so clear cut. Sure there are occasional flashes of something, but it could easily just be interpreted as being gestures of friendship rather than romance. Personally I always saw book Crowley as being more aromantic/asexual. In fact their relationship reminded me a lot of my relationship with my best friend. I’m more like Aziraphale, due to being very camp, somewhat old fashioned and often quite emotional, whereas my friend is like Crowley in that she displays a facade of confidence to mask her insecurities and is extremely loyal to her friends. Now please note I’m not trying to destroy anyone’s personal headcanon here. I know for a fact many LGBT people have interpreted and drawn inspiration from Aziraphale and Crowley’s relationship for nearly 30 years since the book first came out in 1990, and I wouldn’t dream of depriving anyone of that. I’m just merely describing how I personally interpreted the characters when I read it.
So, while book Aziraphale is almost definitely gay in my opinion, I personally don’t think they were anything more than just good friends. Do I think the same about the TV version? Actually no. In fact completely the opposite. I think TV Aziraphale and Crowley are 100%, unquestionably and unashamedly in love with each other and this view is supported by the extra material Neil Gaiman has written for them, most notably the 30 minute long cold open of the third episode that shows Aziraphale and Crowley’s blossoming relationship over the course of human history, as well as how the show frames them. We hear the kind of swelling, orchestral music you would hear in a romance when Crowley saves Aziraphale’s books from a WW2 bomb, the scenes where the two argue about running away to Alpha Centauri are presented as being like a legitimate breakup (with the addition of some random passerby telling Aziraphale he’s ‘better off without him’), the other angels occasionally refer to Crowley as being Aziraphale’s boyfriend (albeit in a mocking way), and the way Michael Sheen and David Tennant play the characters makes them feel much more like an old married couple rather than being simply friends. There’s even a wonderful moment in the third episode where Crowley asks Aziraphale if he could give him a ride somewhere, to which Aziraphale responds “you go too fast for me Crowley.” It leaves very little room for doubt in my opinion, and yet Neil Gaiman refuses to verbally confirm this, even though the actors and the director have expressed numerous times that they interpreted the characters as such. Not only that, but the writing and filmmaking leaves just enough room for plausible deniability, never explicitly confirming the relationship. So the question remains, does this count as legitimate LGBT representation or is this just a very advanced form of queerbaiting?
Well first it would be useful to talk about what queerbaiting actually is, because a lot of people arguing against Good Omens don’t seem to fully understand the term. Queerbaiting is when a creator hints at a possible same sex romance without ever actually confirming or depicting the relationship. A recent example of this would be Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series.
Tumblr media
JK Rowling first ‘outed’ Dumbledore as gay back in 2007, saying he was in a relationship with the dark wizard Grindelwald, but unless you read the interview, you would never have known this because the book doesn’t provide any sort of hint or clue or reference to that relationship. Worse still, when given the opportunity to rectify this in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, Rowling chose instead to downplay the relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald significantly. This is queerbaiting. Implying a character might be gay or promising to introduce a gay character only to then backtrack or not fully commit. Another example would be Avengers: Endgame where the Russo Brothers announced there was going to be a gay character in the film only for it to be some nameless guy who’s only on screen for about a minute. It revolves around luring people in with the expectation of LGBT representation only to then snatch it away once they’ve got bums in seats.
(Also, just to clarify, queerbaiting is not when a bisexual or pansexual character becomes romantically involved with someone of the opposite sex. Yes it’s important that we see more bisexual and pansexual characters and yes it’s important we see more same sex couples on screen, but do NOT conflate the two. Deadpool’s pansexuality, for instance, isn’t suddenly invalid just because he has a girlfriend).
So, with this in mind, does Good Omens fit the criteria of queerbaiting. Well the sexuality of the characters are often the focal point of many interviews, with the director and actors explicitly describing Aziraphale and Crowley’s relationship as ‘a love story.’ Most notably Michael Sheen, who plays Aziraphale and who has been carrying a torch for the Ineffable Husbands since Good Omens came out. But unlike JK Rowling and the Russos, the makers of Good Omens can back up their words with content. As mentioned above, the way the show frames the relationship makes the implication quite clear. There’s even a bit where Crowley thinks Aziraphale has been killed and he leaves the burning bookshop while ‘Somebody To Love’ is playing in the background. It isn’t really very subtle. So, by my understanding, queerbaiting doesn’t seem particularly accurate when talking about Good Omens. The issue here is one of presentation. The overt subtext is all well and good, but does the fact that there’s no explicit confirmation of their relationship make it invalid? To answer that question, we must look into another relevant term. Queercoding.
Queercoding is when a character is given the traits typically associated with those commonly attributed to gay people, such as effeminate behaviour or ostentatious dress sense. This is used often as a way of getting queer relationships past the censor. Implying a character might be gay without explicitly confirming it for fear of the studio or publisher putting their foot down.
While queercoding is often intrinsically linked to queerbaiting, it’s worth noting that while queerbaiting is always seen as a negative (and rightly so), queercoding is neither positive nor negative. It’s merely a contextual device and can be positive or negative depending on execution. A positive example of queercoding would be Deadpool.
Tumblr media
While the Merc with the Mouth has never been officially outed as pansexual, both the comics and the movies in particular have framed him as someone who doesn’t conform to heteronormative expectations. The marketing of both movies present Deadpool in traditionally feminine poses as a way of mocking and commenting on how gender is perceived in these kinds of tentpole blockbusters. The comics often make fairly explicit references towards Deadpool’s sexual flexibility for the purposes of humour, such as in his interactions with characters like Spider-Man or Thor.
Tumblr media
The movies follow suit. The first movie is littered with moments where Deadpool alludes to being not entirely straight. He occasionally uses gay slang, we see his girlfriend Vanessa penetrate him with a strap-on during the sex montage, and there are frequent references to how sexy Hugh Jackman is, most notably near the beginning when Deadpool describes how he had to give Wolverine a handjob in order to get his own movie. The second movie meanwhile takes it a step further. Not only is the entirety of Deadpool 2 essentially one big allegory for how members of the LGBT community cope with abuse and discrimination, we also see Deadpool express a sexual interest in Colossus many times, the extended cut even going so far as to depict Deadpool trying to give him a blowjob.
Now as I said, Deadpool has never been officially outed as pansexual. That information comes from one of the comic book writers on Twitter. The comics and movies have never verbally confirmed it. We never hear Deadpool describe himself as such. But to say he’s not queer would be absurd because he clearly is. That’s how he’s framed and presented to us across the majority of media. What makes Deadpool a positive example of queercoding is how we view the character. He’s clearly extremely comfortable with expressing his own sexuality and feels no shame in his antics. While the majority of his queer moments are used for the purposes of humour, we’re always laughing with him, not at him.
Now lets take a look at a negative example of queercoding:
Tumblr media
This is Moriarty from the BBC series Sherlock written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. Sherlock is without a doubt one of the worst adaptations of the canon that’s ever been made and the show’s treatment of Moriarty is a big reason for that. When he’s first introduced in The Great Game, when he’s posing as Molly’s boyfriend, Sherlock deduces that he’s gay based on really no evidence at all other than that he puts product in his hair and his underpants are showing. It’s ostensibly playing on that stereotype that any man who takes pride in their appearance isn’t masculine and therefore must be gay. (if that were true then David Beckham would be the gayest man on the fucking planet). While it becomes clear at the end of the episode that this was just an act Moriarty was putting on to fool Sherlock, he never really loses the metrosexual image. He boasts about his ‘Westwood’ clothes, we see him prance and preen like some over the top camp supervillain (more on that later) and he makes numerous double entendres that imply he’s interested in men, specifically Sherlock. There’s even a moment in The Reichenbach Fall where we see Moriarty sitting on a throne wearing the crown jewels. Ha! Do you get it? Because he’s a queen!
What makes this form of queercoding more offensive than Deadpool is, again, how we as the audience are supposed to perceive him. Moffat and Gatiss want us to laugh at Moriarty’s camp behaviour and they clearly find the prospect of shipping Moriarty and Sherlock utterly absurd, as demonstrated in the episode The Empty Hearse where we see the Sherlock fan club suggest Sherlock survived the fall because he and Moriarty were secretly lovers. This bit was there for no reason other than to take the piss out of Sherlock fans who read too much into the show’s intentional subtext. Also, crucially, Moriarty has no real character or backstory other than as a gay stereotype. He’s a lazily written caricature who serves no real purpose other than as a homophobic punchline. There’s a lot more to Deadpool than just being queer. With Moriarty however, there’s simply nothing underneath.
Moriarty is also an example of how queercoding is most commonly applied to villains. There are countless examples of this across various media over the years. The Joker from Batman, for instance. Ursula from The Little Mermaid. Scar from The Lion King. In these cases, whether intentionally or not, queercoding plants ideas of gender identity into the viewers’ heads. A male supervillain like the Joker is presented as being eccentric, arch and incredibly camp while Batman, the hero, is big and strong and serious and honourable. A manly man. Likewise, Ursula is presented as butch and unfeminine, scheming and malevolent, whereas Ariel is attractive and sweet and innocent. The ideal woman. Queercoded villains have been used to demonise the LGBT community for decades by presenting an ideal, hetronormative image of what a man or woman should be like, battling an antagonist that doesn’t fit in with traditional gender roles. Obviously there’s nothing inherently wrong with having a camp male villain or a distinctly unfeminine female villain, but it’s worth bearing in mind where these ideas originally came from and the impact it could potentially have.
So lets bring this back to Good Omens. The queercoding of Aziraphale and Crowley is obvious and it’s never presented in negative terms. (there’s a moment where Shadwell refers to Aziraphale as a pansy, but considering the man is a complete moron who draws eyes on milk bottles and thinks nipples are the gold standard way of identifying a witch, I think we can safely say he’s not to be taken seriously). In fact their relationship is incredibly sweet and endearing. Except... I can understand why Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman weren’t explicit in expressing the characters’ sexuality when the book was first published. It was 1990, both Pratchett and Gaiman were still relatively fresh faces and Western society’s attitudes toward homosexuality weren’t quite as progressive then as they are now. But it’s now 2019. Things have changed. Gay characters are appearing more frequently in books, movies and TV shows, people in general are more accepting of the LGBT community and Gaiman is now a hugely successful author with a lot of influence in the industry. Why not just make the relationship explicit?
Well there are two ways of looking at this. The first is that it really doesn’t need to be explicit. You would never hear a man and a woman talk about how incredibly hetero they are, would you? Actions speak louder than words after all. But when the two characters in question are of the same gender, suddenly the whole thing becomes a massive debate to the point where unless someone comes right out and says they are gay, people simply won’t buy it. Deadpool, tragically, has suffered from this with obnoxious frat boys deliberately glossing over the obvious queer subtext and hijacking the character for their own self-aggrandisement. This really shouldn’t be the case and this whole ‘straight until proven gay’ mindset isn’t the fault of the show. It’s entirely the fault of the viewer. The second involves our last topic of discussion. The Death of the Author. (no pun intended. RIP Pratchett).
Death of the Author refers to a literary essay written by the theorist Roland Barthes in 1967, which argues against critiquing a piece of literature based on authorial intent. Basically, once a book or movie or TV show is released to the general public, any relation to its creator becomes immaterial. The work in question must stand on its own and be judged independently. The intention of the author no longer matters. (I’m simplifying obviously, but that’s basically the gist of it. If you ever get the chance, read the essay yourself. It’s a fascinating read). Gaiman appears to be a firm believer in this philosophy. On his Tumblr account, @neil-gaiman, when asked about the the relationship between Aziraphale and Crowley, he often refuses to comment, invoking the Death of the Author mindset. It’s up the reader/viewer to interpret the characters. If you think they’re gay, then they’re gay. If you think they’re just friends, then they’re just friends. Some could call this a bit of a cop out, and you’re entitled to do so, but I understand where Gaiman is coming from. We’ve seen writers like JK Rowling get into trouble for queerbaiting, saying that she always intended for Dumbledore to be gay, but never actually showing any real evidence for it in the text, and Gaiman doesn’t want to fall into the same trap. Plus it demonstrates that Gaiman respects the views and interpretations of his fans, unlike Rowling who responded to criticism of her queerbaiting on Twitter with GIFs of people sticking their fingers in their ears and ‘blocking out the haters.’
In some ways I do feel very sorry for Gaiman. On the one hand he wants to stay true to his and Pratchett’s original vision, but on the other hand he doesn’t want to disappoint the hundreds of fans who do view the characters as being gay. Good Omens has been cited as an extremely positive influence on many queer readers, some even going so far as to say that it was this very book that allowed them to finally accept their identities and come out of the closet. Heartwarming stories like this can be found all over the web and hopefully many more will emerge now that the TV adaptation has been released. If Gaiman were to suddenly turn around in an interview one day and say ‘oh. No. Sorry. Aziraphale and Crowley were always intended to be just friends. You’re all wrong’, it would destroy people who invested so much in this relationship. Likewise, if he explicitly confirmed in an interview that the two characters are definitely gay, people would either accuse him of queerbaiting if the show doesn’t fully live up to their expectations or accuse him of shoving his political opinions down their throats. He can’t win either way really. That being said, I can’t help but respect Gaiman for sticking to his guns. It demonstrates that he’s confident in his skills as a writer and his ability to make his intentions clear in the text, that he respects the ideas and opinions of his readers and fans, and that he also respects the ideas and opinions of the cast and crew of the Good Omens TV show. While Gaiman has refused to confirm one way or the other, others like Michael Sheen or  director Douglas Mackinnon have made their views very clear. Aziraphale and Crowley are in love. That’s their interpretation and they have every right to it.
So do I believe Good Omens is queerbaiting? In my opinion, no. Does that mean I believe it’s faultless? Again, no. If the intention is to depict Aziraphale and Crowley as being lovers, then I think they could have done a bit more. Obviously I’m not suggesting a full blown sex scene or anything like that. Even something as simple as them holding hands or hugging each other would have done. Some physical intimacy of some kind. Because as it stands, Good Omens does share problems with a lot of other TV shows in how they present same sex couples, in that they’re consciously aware that they are presenting to a heterosexual viewer. This is why a relationship between two women is often sexualised and eroticised for the titillation of straight men whereas the relationship between two men can often be quite chaste. Very rarely do you see two men making out or doing anything beyond a quick peck. Good Omens sadly fits into that camp, though just to be clear, I’m not blaming Neil Gaiman or the show for this. I’m merely saying that this is part of a wider systemic issue that needs to be talked about and addressed as the industry moves forward. (Hell, that might as well be be the title of my entire Tumblr profile). Also, whether you believe the relationship between Aziraphale and Crowley is platonic or romantic, it does not change the impact this story has had on many LGBT readers nor the fact that the story is about love. It’s important to bear this in mind because while, yes, it is important to have this discussion, we can’t lose sight of the positive message it conveys with regards to building bridges and closing divides between opposing groups.
“And perhaps the recent exertions had had some fallout in the nature of reality because, while they were eating, for the first time ever, a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square. No one heard it over the noise of the traffic, but it was there, right enough.”

Nün says,
“The book of LAW : by Nün with the help of God”
written by and typed by Michael Seth-Kincaid Polite born human to Virginia Marie Polite.
These LAW I write is for you to read as it is and not rewrite it, I wrote them for all of us and you and me and everyone in between.  If you do not respect that and change it to learn or gain special alternatives to Truth without acknowledging them as they are and read them accordingly as scripture, your life scripture is ripped to incompletion and the self inflicted damage of abuse you have endured by you abusing me yourself again will leave you lost and wounded. Please leave the LAW unhindered by your reinterpretations in interest to gain, you can gain no advantage by plagiarism or graffiti, please join me in respecting yourself enough to learn from them as I do learn from you not changing you yet always seeing the perfection of All Universe in and as you so long as love is the reign of Self you choose not to deny when you meet me as I meet you in perfect respect, unconditional love and total morality grounded in discipline and responsibility.  Please read the LAW as is written and know I mean business to serve and help your beloved interest in Life over death and misery.
I love you just the way you are and in no other way than perfect Morality. Shape up or you have to ship out.
I am determined to ensure that Unconditional Love is the only Life we value in all the dark of infinite Space.
Michael Nün Polite,
Good Moral Reality,
the Law of Humanity
Unconditional Love
“The logical outcome of your decision to learn what unconditional love is as expressed in these laws is perfectly clear when you choose to follow these laws of unconditional love over any other way.”
There are no solutions found in pain, misery, or suffering. Morality is the discipline of Unconditional Love.
You must choose these laws of morality written here over everything else in the Universe.
Unconditional Love in full Morality is Always the guiding Spirit we are that shapes all good laws here and everywhere.

Alaska Thunderfuck - ‘Vagina’ song analysis
This song is about how men disrespect women and that women are strong, powerful and independent creatures who doesn’t need men in order to survive.
Ave regina vagina - “Hail Queen Vagina” in Latin. The phrase ‘Queen Vagina’ tells us that females are high up in the patriarchy and they rule the world.
Time's up, time's up. Hands up, bow down to vagina - The repetition of the phrase ‘ time’s up’ suggest that men are no longer in control of women, their time is up. Let women be the dominant ones and let them make their own decisions. It is also a reference to the Time’s Up Movement that occurred as a response to widespread allegations of sexual assault against women in Hollywood and the music industry. The second phrase ‘hands down, bow down to vagina’ tells us to respect women and treat them like Queens.
I take a look around the world and it blows my mind. Men have fucked up this planet since the dawn of time - It is appalling to see how men own and dominate women and the whole entire world. The phrase ‘men fucked up’ shows us that men are desolating our community which is Earth. The phrase ‘since the dawn of time’ tells us that men had the power since literally the beginning of our existance. Even cavemans in Paleolithic Era (aka Stone Age) 2 million years ago were in the assendency of everything, even women.
What, Noah's Ark-y, such malarkey - This phrase tells us that the Biblical character ‘Noah’ who saved lifes of all species on Earth so we can continue living is nonsense. The word ‘what’ suggests  that the author is shocked or surprised by this chapter of the Holy Bible and they doesn’t agree with it. It is also suggested by the noun ‘malarkey’. The noun ‘malarkey’ tells us it is all made up and it is a bunch of baloney. Perhaps, it is made up this way just so we would respect men more than women because it was a man who saved our existance after all.
Brick by brick we disassemble the patriarchy - This line tells us that men step by step destroy the system which is our world.
Cause we've had enough and it's gonna be tough - The phrase ‘we’ve had enough’ informs us that women and other people who support equality and women’s rights are no longer afraid of poweful men. The second part of this line ‘it’s gonna be tough’ suggests to us that those people mentioned earlier are putting up a fight for gender equality and they won’t make it easy and painless for men.
Cause like Stefani Germanotta, bitch I like it rough - Stefani Germanotta is Lady Gaga’s real name. Alaska is referencing her 2008 song ‘I Like It Rough’. However, Alaska might be also talking about rough sex, which would mean that women are not frightened of pain. In fact, the word ‘like’ tells us how much they adore it.
Stand back, ready to attack - By this line Alaska tells us that after all this years of inequality, imbalance and disrespect, women are finally ready to fight for their rights and are not afraid anymore.
Sit your ass down cause that pussy grab back - The phrase ‘pussy grab back’ is a reference to Donald Trump’s controversial remarks to Billy Bush, that when married women are famous they let you kiss them without consent and that ‘’You can do anything… Grab ’em by the pussy”. It also tells us that women no longer allow this kind of behaviour and they fight back.
Feminine rage, she's about to erupt - This tells us that female madness is going to explode like a volcano. It is also suggested by the verb ‘erupt’. This line is also a reference to mother nature. We can imply this by the eruption of feminine anger like a volcano.
Cat-calling piece of shits need to shut the fuck up - Here, Alaska is calling men a ‘piece of shits’. This tells us that she is not showing males any respect just like they don’t have respect for women. The second part of this line ‘need to shut the fuck up’ suggest to us that men have to stop cat calling women as they do not enjoy it. It’s not fun, it’s exhausting.
Cause I worship define feminine beauty - This line tells us that we should profoundly and respectfully honor and admire inner female beauty and not just appearance.
Adam take a seat cause Miss Eve is on duty - Again, a reference to Biblical characters. This line tells us that women are not afraid of work and they can do anything, simple as well as complicated tasks,  just like men. Women are replacing men so it sugest that men can now stay home and do all of the ‘feminine’ roles which women have been doing all this years just because they have been instracted to do so.
"But I thought without men then we couldn't have babies" - This line tells us how really uneducated some women are because of the lack of education provided by men. Some people believe women need men in order to survive and reproduce. It is a woman who gives a new life. We could freeze sperm cells and get rid of all the males from our world and human populaton would still survive but if men would get rid of all females, the human population would rapidly go extinct because it is women who gives birth.
Well on Jurassic Park all the dinos were ladies -  A reference to the novel ‘Jurassic Park’ written by Michael Crichton. Stated in the original Jurassic Park that the dinosaurs were created female to avoid breeding. However, they still reproduced, laid eggs and had babies without males. Life always finds a way. Time's up, (Hey!) time's up (Hey!). Hands up, bow down to vagina - The repetition of the exclamation mark tells us that women are raising their voice on men, which suggests they are no longer afraid of them and they are the dominant ones now. Again, show respect to your Queen ‘Vagina’ (women).
We're not afraid, we're fucking brave, brave, brave - As mentioned before, women are not terrified of men. The repetition of the adjective ‘brave’ shows us how valiant and courageous women are.
The future is feminine - This line is pretty much self explanatory. Women will destroy men and it will be them who are going to be in charge of everything.
I said the future is feminine - By the use of the verb ‘said’ we can infer that women are in control and thye’re not afraid anymore. it also shows that women are the dominant ones. In some countries women are not even allowed to speak, and here, a woman is telling a man that females will take over the world.
Which side of history are you on? - Here, Alaska is asking her audience if they want to continue to disrespect women and let men rule everything and everyone or if they want to change the history and have gender equality

Now, these are some storylines I’ve written and would love to try out! (though some of them I’ve lost muse for!) Some of these are based off of tv shows, movies, books, etc.
Behaving Badly -
[ Muse A ] never stood a chance. Even though they grew up in a decent household, they were always drawn to things they shouldn’t have been, and people who they should have stayed away from. Bad choice after bad choice led [ Muse A ] into a spiral of uncontrollable destruction. They seemed to destroy everything they touched, including their relationship with their family, their ability to have a career, or find love. Until [ Muse B ] came into the picture. Attracted to danger as much as [ Muse A ], [ Muse B ] was equally as screwed up, and just as good at being bad. After months, or even years on the road, stealing and cheating their way through the country, [ Muse A ] realizes that perhaps [ Muse B ] was better at being bad then they were, so much in that they they’ve begin to wonder exactly what they’ve gotten themselves into. [ Muse A ] misses their family, and wonders if they’re able to go back and start over. [ Muse B ]’s only family is their partner in crime, and they’ll do anything to make sure they stay together. Can this modern day Bonnie and Clyde (Clyde and Clyde/Bonnie and Bonnie) give up their wicked ways? or will they continue their bad behavior?
 Come Back Home -
[ Muse A ] is married to a member of the Military. They’re a loyal spouse who’s done everything they can to support [ Muse B ], though things have changed. They aren’t the love struck teenagers they were when they got married right out of high school. They’re different, [ Muse A ] is lonely, and [ Muse B ] finds it difficult to talk about the things they’ve seen and done. They’ve done everything they can to make things work and things don’t look like they’re every going to change. But when [ Muse B ] is medically discharged from the their Unit, [ Muse A ] looks at it like a second chance for them to get things right. [ Muse B ] is still haunted by their past, and [ Muse A ] is still unsure of how to help, but maybe their lives can get better?
Wrong Side of the Tracks -
In a town were deep prejudice divides their residents, [ Muse A ] is the perfect child of the towns Sheriff/Mayor etc. They’ve always been the type to make their parents proud and do exactly what they’re told. [ Muse B ] is bad news, or at least everyone says so. Accused of a horrific crimes and basically driven out of town, [ Muse B ] has returned after a few years, and the rumor mill begins again. When [ Muse B ] meets [ Muse A ], they click instantly. [ Muse A ] is curious, and wants to know if the rumors are true, and [ Muse B ] sees [ Muse A ] as a pure light among all of the terrible people that live in their town. But when a student from the nearby college goes missing, all fingers point to [ Muse B ]. [ Muse A ] knows that [ Muse B ] couldn’t have done anything wrong, and wants to prove their innocence. [ Muse B ] refuses to allow [ Muse A ] to get involved, and begins to push them away. [ Muse A ] begins to do their best to find out what really happened, but instead finds a web of lies that tie into the towns Authorities, and a cover up of the crime [ Muse B ] was accused of years ago.
 The End -
[ Muse A ] has given them a chance. Over and over again they’ve tried to see past all of the lying and cheating, but [ Muse B ] just doesn’t seem to want to change. They don’t seem to see the wrong in their actions, and no matter how hard [ Muse A ] tries to work things out, there’s only so much a single person can do. So this is it, the end. [ Muse A ] is ready to walk out the door and never look back. Unfortunately, [ Muse B ] finally believes it, and can’t bare the thought. So, [ Muse A ] has given one more chance. One. [ Muse B ] must prove to them that they’ve changed and that everything is going to be better, or [ Muse A ] is gone.
 California Dreaming -
[ Muse A ] is living the California Dream. Surfing all afternoon, partying all night, sleeping all morning and repeat, nothing can make this dream any better. Until they meet [ Muse B ]. [ Muse B ] fits perfectly into [ Muse A ]’s laid back, carefree lifestyle and the two fall for each other very quickly. As the two get to know each other, [ Muse A ] realizes they don’t know  [ Muse B ] as much as they thought. [ Muse B ] is involved in some very shady, very illegal things, that don’t exactly fit into [ Muse A ]’s lifestyle. Dragged into a world of drugs, violence, and sex, [ Muse A ]’s life is turned upside down when they get caught up in an investigation into [ Muse B ] and the people they work with. They California Dream turns into a nightmare, and the only way out is to leave that world behind, but can they without getting dragged back in by their feelings for [ Muse B ]?
 Defiance | 1940s Setting |-
[Muse A] is a Jewish person living in early 1940s Belarus. German Nazis have ordered the execution of all Jewish people living in the ghettos. [Muse A] witnesses the murder of their family before they flee to the Naliboki Forest, a large rural landscape covering a large portion of Belarus. That is where [Muse A] meets [Muse B], another Jewish escapee fleeing from the Nazi soldiers. The two set up camp along with multiple other Jewish men, women and children fleeing Nazi controlled areas. They begin stealing from local farms, hunting, and moving their camp in order to stay alive. As winter approaches, the group must learn to survive sickness, starvation, and perhaps even betrayal as the Nazi soldiers begin to close in on the camp’s location. Getting caught is not an option, it means death for the entire group.
 A Summer Affair  -
[ Muse A ] and [ Muse B ] are from two different worlds, yet they found themselves vacationing at the same place for a couple of weeks during the summer. After weeks of hot, passionate romance the two say goodbye in order to get back to their normal, boring lives and normal, boring jobs. [ Muse A ] is a recent college graduate who’s in need of a job. [ Muse B ] is the CEO of a huge company and is in need of an assistant. Not knowing [ Muse B ] runs the company, [ Muse A ] applies for the job. [ Muse B ] is now [ Muse A ]’s boss, not to mention they have a life that [ Muse A ] wasn’t told about during their summer fling. Now, [ Muse A ] must do all they can to keep the job they desperately need, while juggling feelings for their boss, keeping the secret of their summer affair from their coworkers, and deciding if they want to rekindle the spark between them and [Muse B].
You Mind as Well Go to Hell -
If you don’t go to church, then you mind as well go to hell. That is the policy in the [ Muse A’s ] House. Of course, you tell a teenager one thing and they do the opposite. [ Muse A ] is the Pastor’s pride and joy, of course they wouldn’t be if they knew the kind of stuff their child did in their free time. Finally [ Muse A ] decide to get out. They climb into a van and head west to California. Except it isn’t at all what they expected. Getting to Cali was hard enough, but making it in Cali could break this sweet kid from the south. Did they just enter the world of their dreams, or did they go from singing in the church choir, to the Hell they were taught to be terrified of? Then comes [ Muse B ]. Street smart, headstrong, wise beyond their years, [ Muse B ] knows their way around California’s underground. With [ Muse B ] as their guide, [ Muse A ] begins to navigate through the streets of California, hoping to find the life they dreamed of back home in Alabama.
Something’s gotta Give -
Growing up, they only had themselves. Living in a world fueled by violence, family doesn’t always mean safety. For the [ Muse A ], family wasn’t something they believed in, being foster children half their lives, and the child of terrible parents the other half. They believed in evil people, hard times, and the fact that someone’s always got an angle when it comes to lending a helping hand. No one is inherently good. Finally, [ Muse A] has turned 18, making them free from the foster care system. Criminal record half a mile long, [ Muse A ] must find a way to make it in the big world. Enters [ Muse B ]. Successful, hardworking, seemingly perfect. [ Muse A ] and [ Muse B ] meet by chance, this chance encounter turns into more as the two begin to see each other. What happens when [ muse B ] finds out about [ Muse A’s ] past? Will it ruin the best thing that has happened to [ Muse A ] in a long time? Or will they finally be able to move past the dark things that have followed them their entire life?
Wicked Attraction | 1920-1940s Setting | -
[Muse A] was always considered to be perfect. They graduated at the top of their class, have a great job, but they’ve always felt like something was missing. [Muse B] was always the same way, though beneath the prefect was a secret. A wicked secret. [Muse B] is part of an underground world of drugs and violence. What happens when [Muse A] and [Muse B] meet and [Muse B]introduces [Muse A] to an underground world of sex, drugs, and violence? Is this what [Muse A]’s always been missing? Can they escape this Wicked Attraction?
Welcome Home -
[Muse A] seemed like the perfect child, good grades, good family, good friends. Everything about except when it came to their feelings for [Muse B]. [Muse B] was too old and too damaged to be involved with someone like [Muse A], but it didn’t stop them from falling for each other. [Muse A] left their infectious little town, leaving all of the bad (including Muse B), behind them. Years later, they return, only to find that [Muse B] never got out. Will their old flame rekindle? Or will [Muse A] realize that[Muse B] is all wrong for them?
On The Road Again -
[ Muse A ] has always been a drifter, never staying in one place, feeling as though the only place they belonged was on the road. [ Muse B ] has always been the conservative type, the type to go to school, get a boring job. One day, [ Muse A ] was passing through the town that [ Muse B ] lived in. They meet, and [ Muse A ] begins to think they may have found a place where they might actually be able to call home. The two begin a relationship based on all the lies [ Muse A ] had to tell in order to keep their past a secret. But [ Muse A ]’s past begins to catch up with them, will they be able to face it, or will they have to run away again?
How You Remind Me -
[ Muse A ] and [ Muse B ] had been dating off and on for years. Breakups, make ups, harsh words, drug/alcohol fueled nights, and flying fists. Unhealthy is the only way to describe their relationship. Loving each other was the easiest and hardest thing they had ever done. Finally unable to take it anymore, [ Muse A ] left in the middle of the night without saying goodbye. With their lover gone, [ Muse B ] fell into an even deeper hole of drugs and violence. Years later, [ Muse A ] has cleaned up their life, gotten a good job, and made a difference in the lives of others. [ Muse B ] is still stuck in a life of one night stands, but they’ve gotten themselves clean from drugs and alcohol. The two meet unexpectedly, and see how different each other have become. This chance encounter turns into another, than another, but [ Muse A ] is unsure of whether or not they want to get themselves caught back up in that world. For [ Muse B ], seeing [ Muse A ] reminds them of all the terrible things they had done in their past. Being reminded of all they had done, [ Muse B ] decides to they need to show [ Muse A ] they’ve changed for good.
Teacher, Teacher. -
[Muse A] is a college Professor. All of their students love them, both because they’re physically attractive and a very good professor , who has little trouble with connecting with students. [Muse B] is a student college that [Muse A] a teaches at. They’ve always been an average/above average student, but for some personal reason, they’ve been having a lot of trouble in the class that [Muse A] teaches. So, in a last effort to get their grade up before the end of the term, [Muse B] has been staying after class to get extra help. The only problem is, they’ve slowly found themselves having feelings for each other beyond the normal professor/student relationship.
Almost Stepparent -
For as long as [Muse A] could remember, it had been only them and their single parent. Their parent had dated and brought home every type of person imaginable, but this one was different. This one was [Muse B]. [Muse B] is everything [Muse A] is looking for in a partner, not to mention at least a decade younger than their parent. What happens when [Muse A] finally realizes they have feelings for [Muse B], their parent’s partner. [Muse B] has feelings for [Muse A], feelings well beyond what is appropriate to feel towards the child of your partner. What happens when the two are left alone for a week while [Muse A’s] parent is out taking care of a sick family member?
Now these are plots that I DIDN’T write but would still like to try! (All gender roles are changeable!)
i want a plot where a guy goes on a roadtrip just wandering around the state trying to find meaning of life with his big ass doggo and one day he comes to diner where this shy young woman works and like her boss is always yelling at her and she has abusive boyfriend and her father used to be abusive as well and this guy he is the first man who ever treated her nicely and he just asks her completely out of the blue if she doesn’t want to leave with him and she’s like “why not?” so she takes all of her things and leaves with him. Pleaseee!
i really, really want a plot where muse a is a naive, sweet, romantic, whimsical little thing with a whole lot of optimism and sunshine in their veins and muse b is the complete opposite; a total player who has someone new in their bed every weekend and hates responsibilities and just spends a lot of their time fucking around. somehow these two have been friends for a while, despite their differing personalities, and one day muse a ends up having to move out of their apartment due to a fire or an infestation or something and muse b is the one who offers to put them up for the time being. it’s all well and good except muse a has terrible nightmares constantly and one night muse b is sick and tired of it (and deep down a little concerned) so gets into bed with muse a until they stop crying and shaking and fall asleep in muse b’s arms instead. cue awkward muses sleeping in the same bed every night and it actually helping muse a a lot with the nightmares, and lots of cuddling and feelings ensue. muse b, being the player they are, are terrified of the idea of liking someone but muse a is pretty much already head over heels and ANGST !!
ok but someone give me that cute bartender storyline though? like this guy tends bar at a restaurant or a pub or something and always sees this cute girl hanging out there, but she’s always either with friends or with some guy so he never really gets the time to talk to her BUT ONE DAY she walks into the place alone and orders so many drinks until she’s so bloody drunk, screaming about how her boyfriend cheated on her, that the bartender had to bring her home himself. she wakes up with a horrible hangover, stumbles out the room to find the bartender cooking breakfast and rolling his eyes, laughing. “first of all, you’re an idiot. second, we didn’t have sex if that’s what you’re wondering. third, breakfast will be ready soon. sit.” and fluff commences HELP PLZ
muse a is a new single father, a teenager at that living in an apartment complex with his newborn. it’s one of those apartment complexes in new york city, where everyone kind of keeps to themselves. muse b lives on his floor and has heard this newborn baby crying at ungodly hours, distracting her from her cramming for midterms. she had complained to the landlord about it and one night, she hears the baby crying again. stepping outside in a fit of rage, muse b is about to yell at whoever is the parent to this bastard child until she spots muse a, pacing the hallway with the child in his arms, his hair disheveled and his eyes giving away the sleep he’s been lacking. she feels sympathy instantly; she had no idea muse a lived on her floor, much less was he the father of this child. so, at 3 in the morning, muse b offers to help muse a get the baby back to sleep. and muse b becomes some sort of baby whisperer to muse a, and he continues to go to her for help and they start to dig each other and this is just so cute please
someone give me a plot where muse a was arrested in high school due to drug dealing and was sentenced to ten years — except he’s let out a couple of years early due to good behavior. with no car, his feet take him to the one place he never thought he’d set foot again in a lifetime. his ex-high school sweetheart, muse b. except, when the door opens, it’s not her. it’s a seven year old little girl with her mom’s hair and her dad’s eyes.
a plot where muse a just needs to get away from everything so she packs up everything into her small shitty car that barley runs and just drives. she loses count of the boarders she crossed until she lands right into the middle of a small town where the population is like 2 thousand and her car breaks down. so she goes into a diner that she sees is open and she asks about a mechanic so the lady in the diner calls up her friend who happens to be muse b, the local mechanic. so muse bcomes over and tells her that he wont be able to check her car out until morning bc its like 10 pm now so muse a is going to check into a motel or smth but muse b offers to put her up for the night and bc shes broke she says yeah and basically they end up banging with the intention that after tomorrow they are never gonna see each other again - wrong. muse b goes down to his shop and looks at the engine and a really important parts gone in it and its going to take a couple weeks for it to come in and basically muse a has to stay in this shitty small town for the next couple of weeks AND THEY FALL FOR EACH OTHER AND WE CAN FIGURE THE REST OUT!
ok but a plot based on (not) the one by bebe rexha though. like muse a is a serial lover and has a different lover each week but then muse b happens. andthey end up in the same bed more often than usual. but muse a knows it’s not a good idea because they fear they’ll end up moving on and breaking muse b’s heart, which is when they realize they care for them. so even if they want to stop it there, they can’t because they are themself, unconsciously, falling for muse b.

Bernie Sanders’ 1972 Essay on Rape Bernie Sanders wrote an essay in which a woman fantasizes about being "raped by three men simultaneously." In 1972, the alternative newspaper Vermont Freeman published an essay by Bernie Sanders entitled “Man — and Woman” in which the future U.S. senator included a reference to a woman fantasizing about rape. After Sanders gained political prominence as a presidential candidate in 2015, that essay was brought to wider attention in a profile of Sanders published by Mother Jones on 26 May 2015: What Sanders did share with the young radicals and hippies flocking to Vermont was a smoldering idealism forged during his college years as a civil rights activist — he coordinated a sit-in against segregated housing and attended the 1963 March on Washington — but only a fuzzy sense of how to act on it. Sanders bounced back and forth between Vermont and New York City, where he worked at a psychiatric hospital. After his marriage broke up in the late 1960s, he moved to an A-frame farmhouse outside the Vermont town of Stannard, a tiny hamlet with no paved roads in the buckle of the commune belt. He dabbled in carpentry and tried to get by as a freelance journalist for alternative newspapers and regional publications, contributing interviews, political screeds, and, one time, a stream-of-consciousness essay on the nature of male-female sexual dynamics: That essay sparked a debate about Sanders and his views on women, and conservative outlets such as Young Cons, reproduced a portion of the essay in an attempt to illustrate how it was hypocritical for liberals to demonize Republicans for waging a “War on Women” when Sanders had written about a rape fantasy in a 1972 essay: According to liberals with IQs smaller than their sock size, conservative presidential candidates absolutely LOATHE women, hate them with a passion even. Those mean, old, white guys — which is a hilarious stereotype given there’s latinos, blacks, and women in the top spots for the GOP — want nothing more than to destroy women’s health care by defunding the ghoulish Planned Parenthood, and encourage rape culture with their antiquated views on gender roles. None of this is actually true, of course, but when have facts ever got in the way of the liberal agenda? What should really make you scratch your head is how lefties will rake conservatives over the coals for the things mentioned above, yet say absolutely nothing about this atrocious Bernie Sanders quote: But of course, plenty of publications on both sides of the political spectrum have said a good deal about “this atrocious Bernie Sanders quote.” NPR, for example, reported that: The essay by the Vermont senator isn’t long — only a page. The bit about rape comes at the very beginning, as does some not-totally-safe-for-work language: A man goes home and masturbates his typical fantasy. A woman on her knees, a woman tied up, a woman abused. A woman enjoys intercourse with her man — as she fantasizes being raped by 3 men simultaneously. The man and woman get dressed up on Sunday — and go to Church, or maybe to their ‘revolutionary’ political meeting. Have you ever looked at the Stag, Man, Hero, Tough magazines on the shelf of your local bookstore? Do you know why the newspaper with the articles like ‘Girl 12 raped by 14 men’ sell so well? To what in us are they appealing? Sanders Sanders then goes on to explain his ideas about gender roles and eventually gets at a sharper point — that traditional gender roles help create troubling dynamics in men’s and women’s sex lives. “Many women seem to be walking a tightrope,” he writes, as their “qualities of love, openness, and gentleness were too deeply enmeshed with qualities of dependency, subservience, and masochism.” One way to read the essay is that Sanders was doing (in a supremely ham-handed way) what journalists do every day: draw the reader in with an attention-getting lede, then get to the meat of the article in the middle. You can draw divergent conclusions from the article itself. On the one hand, he’s talking about liberating people from harmful gender norms. On the other, with his nameless hypothetical “man-and-woman” characters, he also seems to imply that men fantasize about raping women or that women fantasize about being raped. CNN also covered the controversial essay in a piece that quoted Sanders’ campaign spokesman describing it as “stupid” and a “dumb attempt at dark satire”: Michael Briggs, Sanders’ campaign spokesman, said the article was a “dumb attempt at dark satire in an alternative publication” that “in no way reflects his views or record on women. It was intended to attack gender stereotypes of the ’70s, but it looks as stupid today as it was then.” By Dan EvonPublished 22 September 2015Filed Under bernie sanders https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/bernie-sanders-essay/

Reacting to Captain America: Civil War (Part 3 of 3)
He Reminds Me of a Chicken Pox. If I’m In Trouble PLEASE Do Not Call Him.
Tumblr media
The Setup: Here’s Part 1 of Marchae and Clint’s Civil War reaction, and here’s Part 2.
Notes from Kris and Miri in italics.
MARCHAE: Ok can I tell you what I liked
CLINT: Sure I liked everything
MARCHAE: NO NO NO first tell me what you liked
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
I would not go that far...  but I did LOVE Madam Hot Sauce!! She is a really strong female character (physically) and that makes me happy...
CLINT: It was a good continuation of the cap story
Black panther
Spidey
Obviously, cap
Hawkeye
Yes Madame hot sauce
MARCHAE: Hawkeye is a male Katniss Everdeen
He is not on my list... our lists do not match except for Madam Hot Sauce
CLINT: Visions density shifting
Tumblr media
His name is Clint
MARCHAE: SPIDEY is so far not on my list he isn't even on my non existent kid's kid's kid's list
CLINT: [Hawkeye] grew up in the circus
MARCHAE: SHIT! SERIOUSLY!!
CLINT: Hurtful
MARCHAE: you want me to get back on the things I DON"T LIKE
But really… A CIRCUS
ok i am going to tell you the things I LIKED
CLINT: That's his comic history. But continue
MARCHAE: it should not be
CLINT: It works
KRIS: It does!
I don’t think it’s supposed to be Clint Barton’s backstory in the movies, though. For whatever it’s worth, the Ultimates version of Clint (whom movie-Clint was more directly inspired by, at least early on) was an Olympic archer who became a special ops soldier. We do know that movie-Clint was with SHIELD long before Natasha, and that when he was assigned to kill her (she was with the KGB at the time), he turned her instead.
MARCHAE: I really do like the core of the story like when you take out all the things I didn't like about it the root message of friends til the end is a good one
Tumblr media
CLINT: And him and hot sauce are bffs
K: The movie does shortchange this. And I would’ve liked to see even more work with Steve and Natasha’s friendship.
MARCHAE: also...why. I also really liked the action scenes
CLINT: So Friends makes it worse
MARCHAE: No!
in fact my note was "I think if they don't talk and it was just action with no words ALWAYS... I could get all the way down"  that's kind of a backhanded compliment but i REALLY REALLY REALLY like action movies a lot
K: I don’t think I knew this
MIRI: I definitely did not
CLINT: So less story more action
MARCHAE: so it is a testament to the fact that they were some amazing action scenes.
CLINT: So you'd like a Michael Bay avengers
MARCHAE: We can talk about my issues with story later (and it was mostly just wonky time things)
YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
K: I’m learning so much about Marchae
CLINT: No
MARCHAE: I mean I do love to see the people fight and the things get blown up
CLINT: Watch Man of steel you'll see why that's bad
MARCHAE: guess I will and I bet it will be GOOD!
CLINT: No
MARCHAE: well it's also superman...
ok things I like Mr. Madam Hot Sauce (I know she's your crush)
Tumblr media
CLINT: #notmysuperman
MARCHAE: LOL
CLINT: Scarjo is the best
MARCHAE: I did like the Black Panther Reveal ( I think by this point in my notes I got their names somewhat together because they are all written-- I am going to take pictures of my notes and put them in the post) I loved the spotty accent the Olsen Sister
CLINT: She was regionally vague
MARCHAE: it was regionally hilarious because it was only on words that had weird 'R' sounds
LOL. it provided comedic relief
Tumblr media
I actually really liked the toddler robot he may have been my favorite
CLINT: I don't know if it was funny but ok
MARCHAE: it was
CLINT: Really him
K: Now I legitimately think Marchae should go back and watch Avengers: Age of Ultron for Vision stuff.
MARCHAE: YUP and Madam Hot Sauce... I may be her if I ever decide to celebrate Halloween
K now hear me cause this is going to be mean
CLINT: Comic con
Cos play
MARCHAE: but I really really liked the individual's subplot story lines... they were well defined but the total stories as a collective not so much  so if each character had a break out session of sorts i could do it...
AND I WOULD HAVE COS PLAYED THIS YEAR BUT YOU STOOD ME UP!!!
CLINT: That's what the whole movie was
MARCHAE: no...
CLINT: Unrelated (re:Cosplay)
MARCHAE: (no that last bit is truth)
ok The fight scene with Bucky was also great and the tag team girl fight scene was also pretty amazing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CLINT: Which Bucky fight the one on the stairs or when he was cray. Or both
MARCHAE: Both actually were really good
I also like that it is a woman who calls Iron Man on his crap and tells him to watch his back
CLINT: The stairs is my fav next to the one at the end
The kids mom
MARCHAE: I also really did forget how awesome iron mans suit was  and I appreciated Stan Lee's cameo
those were all the things I liked
CLINT: It it's cool but he has no powers
MARCHAE: who? Iron Man
CLINT: Yep
MARCHAE: Are you kidding me right now?
LIKE ONLY TWO OF THEM DO ANYWAY!!!!
MIRI: Spiderman has powers. Just saying
CLINT: Iron Man has no powers he's just rich and smart
MARCHAE: like none of them have powers is my point I think that this wasn't a bad movie I just would rather more put together polished heroes
CLINT: Vision, Wanda, cap and Spidey
MARCHAE: if you say that things name one more time i swear  Ok can we please talk about spider man just for a moment and I will try to be rational
CLINT: They didn't need back story at this point We're like 12 movies in
MARCHAE: (also thats not a lot of people to depend on--but we are rehashing earlier conversation if we keep revising that point)
CLINT: Spidey was awesome
MARCHAE: Here is my thing I don't like Spider Man ... not one bit nope
CLINT: Why
MARCHAE: in fact... my actual honest to god note says... "He reminds me of a chicken pox.
K: I’m... not sure what this means?
he is always jokes on jokes on jokes. If I'm in trouble PLEASE do not call him. Is this THE BEST that Tony can do! He has the ENTIRE MARVEL UNIVERSE AT HIS DISPOSAL”
I've never liked spiderman . he is kind of whiney and it is really annoying when you're depending on people to save your life. I think from that point forward the movie kind of turns into a farce
CLINT: He is a kid and it's how he deals with the stress
Wow
Tumblr media
MARCHAE: He needs to grow the heck up
See this is what I mean
WHY
CLINT: He's in high school
MARCHAE: and the reason it turns into a farce
is because then ANT MAN WHO TURNS INTO A GIANT also JOINS US
CLINT: Tony used a child soldier. Let that sink in
MARCHAE: SANK. I mean there is an entire universe and that man was like let me go and get this MAN CHILD who makes JOKES to help out?
CLINT: Which is why you don't register
MARCHAE: and also the fact that Ant Man referred to them as SUPER HEROES. Which is why we need a manual
rule number 1A: STOP MAKING JOKES AINT CRAP FUNNY...PEOPLE ARE DYING
K: Wait, maybe Marchae really will like Zack Snyder’s DC movies
CLINT: Ant Man was cool he had his own movie
MARCHAE: Sweet grief
I did like the ant woman/Madam Hot Sauce Fight!
CLINT: And if you let that get to you too much you're done
She kicked him in the gonads
MARCHAE: I feel like That trio: Ant, Spider and Iron Man act way to casual for me
she did and it was great!
Ant Man was the worst... A giant Tiny Man
CLINT: You need them though so it's not super dark. Giant Man was dope
MARCHAE: *eye roll*
CLINT: I'm at that part now. I'm watching it again
MARCHAE: You're watching it AGAIN! LOL
CLINT: Just cause
MARCHAE: YESS!!!
okay so did you have any specific questions for me?  (I mean I have lots for you but I feel like I can easily wikipedia them and spare the interwebs my ignorance)
CLINT: You can ask away, but how did you feel about the reveal at the end with Buck and Tony
Tumblr media
MARCHAE: OH I actually really liked that and was shocked!!!  that was pretty cool
K: This is interesting. As a longtime MCU fan who saw it coming from the teaser (and I don't think the movie was necessarily trying to hide it), I still thought it worked on a dramatic level, partly since it involved a betrayal from Steve as well, in his lie of omission.
CLINT: All that destruction to break up the crew
MARCHAE: and it nearly worked...
CLINT: It did
MARCHAE: I think I even noted that it was sad that Captain America felt so alone in the world and that they were literally destroying each other... that was kind of sad ...and great character/story development
CLINT: Man out of time
Defend my friend or jump on board with something to keep his new friends. I was shocked I thought he was hoping to use the soldiers.
But nope I'm here to let you know buddy killed your parents
Have fun
Also Tony's phone
MARCHAE: The phone?  what did I miss
CLINT: It's just cool
MARCHAE: LOLOL
CLINT: And projects holograms. I'd want it
MARCHAE: They have those out now! (just kidding)
CLINT: I would own it
MARCHAE: K I don't think I have anything else really of note necessarily
CLINT: See the funny thing is at the end they were close to all being friends again but that was part of the plan
Great ending
MARCHAE: OH NO i didn't mean to cut you off
CLINT: Oh it's cool
MARCHAE: Yeah ... but i feel like it will never be the same with them again
CLINT: It won't be and that was the plan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MARCHAE: (not that i know a ton about how it used to be with them I mean I saw avengers 1... but still they seemed to all get along)  to turn them against each other and have them all going rogue perfect plan! sounds like gravy to me!
CLINT: Yep in zemos eyes the avengers killed his family
he knew he couldn't beat them so he decided to break them
You can't overlook your friend knowing his homie killed your mom
Then just be cool
MARCHAE: It is a very intricate story that's for sure
CLINT: But well done
MARCHAE: *offers tight smile*
CLINT: Lol
MARCHAE: We all like different movies
CLINT: What would you score it
MARCHAE: I feel like it's a trick question because it's like the score BS and the score AS
CLINT: (I'm lost) wait spider Man
MARCHAE: YUP
CLINT: Oh wow such shade
MARCHAE: So BS  it yielded a solid 7.5
AS it went down to probably a 5... I really don't like him and it did get a little silly to me when he arrived on the scene
MIRI: OH MY GOD MARCHAE
CLINT: Then after
MARCHAE: also I need to shout out Marisa Tomei.
K: This did kind of make me want to watch Only You, an early-90s rom-com Tomei and Downey star in. But having seen the trailer, I’m not sure Downey’s character will have aged well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After what
CLINT: After no more Spidey
MARCHAE: Oh it'd go back up to a 7.5
CLINT: 9.5
MARCHAE: on that note LOL
CLINT: Lol
MARCHAE: well hey it's been a freaking DELIGHT to do this with you!!! I had fun watching and talking to you about Captain America Civil War
CLINT: 11ty. Hundred! It was a good time
MARCHAE: 11ty hundred is not a movie rating LOL
CLINT: For this one it is
MARCHAE: I adore you
Let's try and see LOGAN!
CLINT: I say bvs or we can do both
MARCHAE: what is BVS?  bible vacation school?
CLINT: Or if you're up for torture will Smith and suicide squad. Batman vs Superman
MIRI: Marchae, don’t watch Suicide Squad. Two bad Will Smith movies in a year might destroy you. He’s good, but the movie is a disaster.
MARCHAE: Lets aim for BVS and Logan! we officially have plans!
Thanks again for doing this brother
CLINT: No prob sister
Tumblr media
Thanks very much to Clint for being our first Guest Reactor! We hope he has time to join us again further down the line. I mean hopefully it won’t come down to the end of the line. Which is a reference Marchae would understand IF SHE’D WATCHED THE WINTER SOLDIER.
Anyway. No promises, but maybe a Spider-Man: Homecoming reaction is in the cards, though if we want Marchae to watch it we’re going to owe her two or three Reactions to things she chooses. Watch this space. In the meantime, you can follow us on Twitter.

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #156 - Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Tumblr media
Spoilers Below
Have I seen it before: Yes
Did I like it then: Yes.
Do I remember it: Yes.
Did I see it in theaters: No.
Format: Blu-ray
1) So there is this longstanding opinion that of the first nine Star Trek films, the odd numbered ones are weaker than the even numbered ones. And of the trilogy made up by Star Trek II, III, and IV, this is definitely the weakest. BUT it is also the strongest of the odd numbered ones with the original cast and not a bad movie at all.
2) Leonardo Nimoy made his theatrical directing debut with this film, making him the first Star Trek actor to direct anything Star Trek. This would be a pattern later seen in feature film directors William Shatner and Jonathan Frakes, while a number of other cast members would direct TV episode of their respective series. According to IMDb:
Paramount studio chief Michael Eisner resisted the idea of Leonard Nimoy directing, because he mistakenly thought that the reason for Spock's death stemmed from a hatred that Nimoy had about Star Trek. (He believed that it was written in Nimoy's contract that Spock had to die in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)). Nimoy told him that the contract is "in a file in the basement of the building you're sitting in" and suggested that he "get someone to pull it" for him.
Nimoy does a fine job as director and went on to do an even finer job in the sequel Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. But more on that later.
3) There is a gap in the opening credits of the cast where Leonardo Nimoy’s name would go. Although he is in this film, it is largely at the very end while other actors play younger versions of Spock until then. I like that they left that gap. It signifies the hole left in the crew by Spock’s death.
4) One thing I think this film does better than Wrath of Khan (and which The Voyage Home will do better than this film even) is flesh out the original crew members who are not Kirk, Bones, or Spock. An early example of this can be found in this exchange:
Kirk: “Mr. Scott, have you always multiplied your repair estimates by a factor of four?”
Scotty: “Certainly sir. How else would I maintain my reputation as a miracle worker?”
5) Christopher Lloyd as Kruge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love Christopher Lloyd, okay? Back to the Future is my favorite film of all time and Christopher Lloyd is freaking amazing in it. So the Back to the Future fanboy in me is more than happy to watch him in this film. And while he is no Khan, Kurge is a very admirable villain. Nimoy casted Lloyd because of his ability to be operatic, something which can be seen very well. Lloyd plays Kurge’s unhinged nature very well and even makes him a physically intimidating bad guy. Again, while he’s no Khan, that does not make him a bad villain. In fact I think he’s the best part of this film. He injects every scene he’s in with such life and energy that you can’t help but be drawn to him. Lloyd even said in an interview that this was one of his favorite roles to have played.
6) Bones’ having Spock’s mind in him is a perfect example of both this film’s greatest strength and flaw: great characters, not as great plot.
Tumblr media
Bones having Spock’s mind in him creates for some great internal conflict and characterization. DeForrest Kelley gets to have a lot of fun in the part and it is a treat seeing Bones outside of his comfort zone and finding the middle ground between him and Spock. Unfortunately outside of one brief bar scene it doesn’t lead to much action in the plot. And by action I don’t mean blowing stuff up as much as doing something. What if Bones did something he thought was logical because he had Spock’s brain, but screwed up immensely because he’s not thinking like himself or like Spock but like the someone who wants to be one or the other. I’m a sucker for character development and studies, which this film provides in mass so I’m grateful for that. But unfortunately some of the fun and energy of other Star Trek films is lost in the process. It’s not a fatal flaw, the film is still good, but I do think it is its biggest weakness.
7) It bothers me so much that they just dropped Carol Marcus (Kirk’s ex and David’s mother, as well as lead scientist on the Genesis project) in this film and its sequels. Like seriously? There was no room in the script for even a namedrop? Why isn’t she studying the Genesis planet? Why are you dropping this awesome new female character? Why!?!?!?
8) Oh Bones...
Bones [after learning about the mind meld]: “It’s his revenge for all those arguments he lost!”
Tumblr media
(GIF originally posted by @marshmallow-the-vampire-slayer)
9) Nichelle Nichols was originally upset at her minimal amount of screen time in the film, but was pleased when she saw what she got to do with that screen time.
youtube
10) The fact that this captain is so casual and relaxed when he’s dealing with the theft of a ship concerns me.
Tumblr media
11) While this film does do great with it’s characters, I feel like David and Saavik sort of suffer in this film. I think Robin Curtis does a good job in the part, but (in part of the writing and direction I imagine) she loses some of the energy and rashness Kirstie Alley brought to the part. She is a bit more of a stereotypical Vulcan, which is a shame because Alley’s strong headed nature was in part what made the part so interesting in the first place. David meanwhile is seen mostly as a scientist who made brash decisions in the past but (except for one notable FINAL decision on his part) largely does what is expected of him in the situation he finds himself in during the film. I would’ve been interested in seeing them push these characters and challenge them a bit more, but maybe that’s just me.
Tumblr media
12) Remember how I said Kurge was the best part of this film?
Kurge [after his Klingon crew member blows up a federation ship]: “I wanted prisoners!”
Klingon: “A lucky shot!”
[Kurge murders Klingon]
Kurge: “Animal.”
13) I will say that the potential relationship (platonic or otherwise) between David and Saavik is interesting, but I would have personally preferred a focus on the relationship between David and Kirk as father and son respectively. That’s not to say the film is bad because it doesn’t feature it (you should only ever judge a film based on what it is, not what it isn’t), it is just a personal preference I have.
14) So Spock - while regenerating from a boy into a man - has to go through pon farr. Pon farr is the process where every seven years Vulcans (male and female I believe) become aroused. They get blood fever, become violent, and eventually die I think (my knowledge of deeper Trek lore is defined largely by Wikipedia) unless they mate. So Saavik helps Spock but all we see is...well...
youtube
Tumblr media
Was that sex? Did they have hand sex or something? Or did we just cut away before they had sex? I know there’s a deleted scene in Star Trek IV where Saavik is pregnant with Spock’s baby, but since it’s deleted I don’t know if it’s canon. I just don’t really know what happened.
15) Hey, that’s John Larroquette!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You probably wouldn’t see that if you weren’t looking for him, but still.
16) The death of David unfortunately doesn’t have much of an impact on me. I like the decision to kill him off in theory and I like that it is done in defense of Saavik and Spock (therefore making his character more active in the plot), but I am not invested in him enough as a character for it to effect me. The worst part of it is how it effects Kirk, which I will admit is greatly effective seeing the famous captain break down (even if only for a brief moment) because of the death of his son who he barely knew.
17) I think the decision to destroy the Enterprise is the best plot point in this film. It is the last thing you would expect and a great portrayal of just what the stakes are. This ship was as much a character in the 18 years since the original series as Kirk or Spock and we witness it’s destruction.
Kirk: “My god Bones, what have I done?”
Bones: “What you had to do What you’ve always done. Turned death into a fighting chance.”
18) Have I mentioned I really like Skurge as a villain?
Skurge [after being told the planet is killing itself]: “Yes. Exhilirating isn’t it?”
I don’t find his final fight with Kirk to be very effective though. Like David’s death, it just sort of happens and then is over for me. This might just be my own take on the scene though.
19) Yes. This. A developing relationship between Bones and Spock.
Bones [to a comatose Spock]: “But it seems I’ve missed you. I don’t know if I can stand to lose you again.”
More of this please.
20) I LOVE the entire ending scene on Vulcan.
Tumblr media
It is interesting, compelling, and very well done. The entire Enterprise crew sacrificing their careers and futures to save their friend moves me. Bones literally risking his life for an ancient procedure all at the chance that Spock can live again is great and speak not only to his character but to their relationship. But the best part is the very final scene, where an absent minded and slightly amnesiac Spock speaks with Kirk and we see just how great their friendship is.
Spock: “Why would you do this?”
Kirk: “Because the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many.”
[Beat.]
Spock: “I have been and always shall be your friend.”
While weaker than the film which precedes and follows it, Star Trek III is still a worthy inclusion to the Star Trek canon. Its plot may be a bit weaker, but the analysis of the characters and their loyalty to each other (specifically to Spock) is the beating heart. There is some nice humor, great acting, and solid directing from Nimoy. All in all if you’re a fan of Star Trek or you liked Wrath of Khan, you should definitely give The Search for Spock a watch.

Lucifer musings
I've been catching up with the Lucifer TV show over the last few weeks, and having caught up, I was inspired to go read the comic series it's very loosely based on. I read the Lucifer bits in Sandman back when it first came out, but I never read the Mike Carey-written series which came out some years afterwards. There may be some general spoilers below, but nothing really specific. I'm about two thirds of the way through, and it's an interesting contrast. The comic series is in every way a more imaginative and far-reaching story, but I find I don't enjoy it as much. Carey is one of those 'edgy' grimdark writers whose work is very casually rapey and obsessed with monstrous pregnancies resulting from those literal and/or metaphorical rapes, and it often leaves me feeling like I need brain bleach. Every single female character, even the pre-teen girl, gets referred to as a slut, a whore, or a cunt at some point. The main characters are self-centered assholes who leave trails of death and destruction behind them (I'm talking genocide on a massive scale as well as your usual ultra-dark-n-gritty supernatural noir death toll) so I find that I only really care about the minor and supporting characters. I'm not particularly invested in whether comics Lucifer achieves his goals or not; it's interesting watching him for the worldbuilding and use of mythology Carey does (which really is pretty stunning) but this version of Lucifer is so all-powerful and all-knowing (just ever so slightly less all-powerful and all-knowing than God) that there's not a lot of tension in watching him defeat his enemies. Also their regular artist's style just does not do it for me. (My memory may be failing me, but I don't remember Gaiman's version being quite so much of a dick.) TV Lucifer, on the other hand, is a supernatural iteration of every formula "Wild and crazy male character is paired with straight-laced by the book female character, and together they fight crime and have UST!" procedural show ever made. Luckily the main character's played by a personable and talented actor who manages to make him sympathetic even when he's also being a self-centered dick. TV Lucifer has a sense of humor, which Comics Lucifer decidedly does not, and TV Lucifer does care about a few people other than himself, which Comics Lucifer also decidedly does not. (Well, maybe Mazikeen. But if Mazikeen were not useful to Comics Lucifer, I suspect he'd sacrifice or betray her in a hot second. He pays his debts, grudgingly, but not a penny more.) Plus 357000% less rape/slut/whore stuff directed at the female characters, who are varied and interesting. Also, TV Amenadiel >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Comics Amenadiel. (I think they've made TV Amenadiel a lot more like Comics Michael.) It's not as daring or innovative as the comics by a long shot, but it's a hell of a lot more fun. Anyway, I'll probably finish the comics off by the end of the week, and I'm interested to see where the TV series goes. Somehow I have my doubts that an American series on network TV would have the balls to make God as malevolently indifferent a character as he is in the comics. But it occurred to me that as different as the two versions are, they both have something of the same limitation: they're both centered around characters who are immortal and godlike, if not outright gods (the comics much more so than the TV series.) And yet those characters are just as limited and petty and cramped in their worldview as any human. The same goes for the world they inhabit. I suppose it's an inherent limitation of the subject matter; the myths surrounding the Christian God were accreted during a time period when humanity saw the universe as a relatively tiny place. When the universe was only six thousand years old, and small enough for a man to traverse one end to the other in a year or less, gods who fling lighting bolts and destroy cities loom large. When the universe is inconceivably old and inconceivably vast, and we command city-destroying lightning ourselves, such gods as we imagined in our collective youth look much, much smaller.

Reading List 2016
Another year, another reading list. I honestly barely read anything in 2016, so I don’t even know if this is worth posting. I keep making myself the goal that I’ll read at least 50 books in a year and every year the amount I actually end up reading keeps getting shorter and shorter.
“The Opposite of Loneliness” by Marina Keegan - January 13, 2016 - January 24, 2016 - So, this is an anthology of short stories that were written by a very promising graduate from Harvard who ended up being killed in a car accident within a few months of her graduation. These stories were collected by her friends and family and published posthumously. All the stories were definitely a great read. I think my favourite of the bunch of a short horror/sci-fi piece by the name of “Challenger Deep”. I’d probably put it in the vein of “Sphere” by Michael Crichton.
“Dreamcatcher” by Stephen King - January 27, 2016 - March 7, 2016 - Stephen King tends to always be a bit of a hit or miss for me. I’m more of a fan of his fantasy than I am of his straight horror. This book, while extremely long for someone with my attention span, was actually a good read for me. I enjoyed it a lot. Too bad I can’t say the same of the movie (it’s a piece of trash, don’t even do it). I can’t say that I was a big fan of the magical disabled kid trope, but I’m going to excuse that as a product of its time.
“The Falconer” by Elizabeth May - February 6, 2016 - February 15, 2016 - I’ve been following Elizabeth May from back since she mostly published photography on deviantArt, so I was pretty excited to get my hands on her debut novel. Elizabeth is a great author and it’s very clear that she puts a lot of time and effort into her research of the culture and etiquette of Victorian Edinburgh, as well as Scottish lore on faeries. While I’m not exactly a fan of the formulaic YA romance (female protag falls in love with broody beautiful male character; love triangle between broody boy and childhood boy) that’s evident in the book, I’m definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
“Havemercy” by Jaida Jones and Danielle Bennett - March 10, 2016 - March 14, 2016 - This one was a re-read. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this series, and this book in particular, because while I love it and I find all the character’s viewpoints very interesting, I always feel that the authors squandered a lot of potential with their idea because they spend waaaaay too much time character building and not enough time actually telling the story and much of the defining moments of the book (like, y’know, the war that’s been raging on for a 100 years and the fact that there are FLYING MAGICAL STEEL DRAGONS) all pretty much happen off screen. And it’s made worse that the hype of Havemercy is the dragons and (SPOILERS: they all get destroyed at the end of this book - there are like, three more books after this).
“Shadow Magic” by Jaida Jones an Danielle Bennett - March 15, 2016 - June 6, 2016 - Another re-read. Sequel to Havemercy. I think I was re-reading these books because I bought “Steel Hands” which is book 4 of this series and the only one I haven’t read before, but I stopped after this book and still haven’t read it, so when I get time this year I’ll have to re-read “Dragon Soul” (book 3) and then read “Steel Hands”. So, this book follows the events of Havemercy and the aftermath of the war with four different viewpoint characters - which is something I don’t really like in sequels because I get invested in certain characters. This is probably my least favourite book in the series just because I don’t particularly care about the viewpoint characters, at least not as much as I did in Havemercy - and after a while all of their viewpoints sort of start to sound the same. One character who I really liked in “Havemercy” is one of the viewpoint characters in this and he was honestly so annoying and not at all like he was in the previous book, so that was a bit disappointing. I did like that we got to see the other side of the war, however, and the culture of the Ke-Han (which is an amalgamation of Chinese, Japanese, and Mongolian culture), whereas “Havemercy” took place solely in Volstov (influenced from Russian and various European cultures). Still a lot of wasted potential, as the most interesting conflict again took place mostly off-screen.
“Steeple” by Jon Wallace - June 10,2016 - June 30, 2016 - This was...an interesting book. I was really confused because the story kept referencing events that had happened as if they had happened in previous narration and I was getting really annoyed, until I realized that this book is actually book 2 of a trilogy. There is seriously no indication anywhere that this book belonged to a series. This book (and series, I guess) follows a very common sci-fi plot in where man creates A.I. and the A.I. have rebelled and every one is living in a dystopic nightmare. Fun times. Your main character is a A.I. turned human who is down on his luck, in that he fucking hates being human, but apparently in the first book he was poisoned (?) by a fellow A.I. which fucked up his nanites and basically turned him into a human. I’m honestly not sure how the A.I.s are supposed to work in this universe. Anyways, basically this guy and his companions have to fight their way up a giant fucking tower that had originally been designed as a metropolis before the A.I. rebelled and is now a cesspool for refugees and killer A.I.s. Oh, and Ken is being hunted by some other A.I. because apparently he’s responsible for destroying Control (again, this must have happened in the previous book because I have no fucking clue). It’s a good read if you like straight sci-fi, but I didn’t find the writing that good.
“Anansi Boys” by Neil Gaiman - July 2, 2016 - October 15, 2016 - I read “American Gods” a few years ago and didn’t actually really like it that much, so I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about its sort-of-sequel. Surprisingly, I liked it a lot better. Neil Gaiman tends to be a bit hit and miss for me as well as King. I like his writing, I like his ideas, but there are some books I like by him and some I just don’t really.
“The Aeneid” by Virgil - October 15, 2016 - January 1, 2017 - I have no idea why I decided I was going to read this book. I hate it. It’s so long-winded and boring, and I know it’s because it was written 2000 years ago as basically a propaganda piece of Augustus Caesar, but GOD DAMN if it doesn’t make me want to blow my brains out. I’m very amused by the fact that EVERY character has a name. It doesn’t matter if character x is introduced and killed in the same line, he will be named. In book ix in particular while their in the middle of a war between the Trojans and Turnus’ army it will tell you the name of the character who is doing the killing, list of everyone he just killed, and then will move on to the next character killing, and so on. It’s hilarious. And I can pronounce about 10% of all the names. Yay Ancient Rome.
---
And that’s it. This is definitely the shortest one of theses I’ve done.
