Dead Boy Detectives and Interview with the Vampire are the best shows of 2024, in this essay I will–
#dead boy detectives#interview with the vampire#louis de pointe du lac#lestat de lioncourt#claudia de pointe du lac#charles rowland#crystal palace#niko sasaki#edwin payne#armand#jenny the butcher#lgbtqia#female characters are fun and complex#queer characters are respected and not unnecessarily tragic#though they are necessarily tragic#poc characters aren't just there for the sake of it#they're *gasp* actually three dimensional complex and flawed#without being needlessly villainized for it#not to mention the production for both shows is off the charts#and the casting is *chefs kiss*#honestly I could talk about these shows for hours

In the world I love
_
In a different world
#vanitas no carte#vanoé#doomed yaoi save me...save me doomed yaoi#play on the opening song + visual sequence + the fact that vanitas could only ever be happy in an alternate universe also#+ the other fun little fact we learn about him from episode one#i have complex feelings about this anime#its pretty damn fucking good#but im a leeeeetle iffy about the way it developed the female characters.....they had potential and i was actually excited to#to see some good solid female characters even the respective romances with their l/i's felt good at the start#not jeanne obv. they fucked up a perfectly good woman and her whole dynamic with v could have gone sooo well without the reall#really forced flirting behaviour.... i liked the more serious relationship they had it made me actually not hate what they had at the start#but yknow. whatever. sorry about going off about another ship on this but im just....i love jeanne a lot. i wish they didnt do her so dirty#my girl deserves better than this asshole#you want white/black dynamics??? let her get married to domi and then we can talk#i enjoy this show and i enjoy vanoe a lot#very yuriyaoi if you ask me#my art

It's hard being the only true Isabela Understander but someones got to do it
#once again we are refusing to ascribe as much depth and emotional complexity to female characters as the men 🫡#not about anything specific but I'm always seeing posts about isabela where im like HARD disagree#i did see a post where it was like poor baby zevran doesnt think he deserves love 🥺 but isabela knows she does!#like ok u did not understand the character ig#she's not just like... fun and confident and sexy. in fact i feel like zevran has less intimacy issues and avoidance than she does lol

Silent plea to the cosmos for Lilith to not be Stella 2.0 when her time comes. Please. PLEASE.
#helluva boss#hazbin hotel#Stella is a fun character but she’s also very…irritating#in many aspects#Lilith has much to answer for but she can be morally ambiguous or even evil without being like Stella#Stella is selfish and bratty and self absorbed to the point of actual stupidity#Lilith has the makings of some real complexity and antagonism that I think Stella was robbed of due to HB’s genre#and Viv’s immaturity as a storyteller#she’s got some experience so let’s have some better female characters!!#silent plea for more body diversity too while I’m at it#Adam and Mammon and Mimzy are fun in their own ways but also…they shouldn’t be the only fat characters#honorable mention to Nurse Pussyface for being a legend but too minor to count

as always with adaptation stuff i would truly love to get like . play by play on what was chosen to keep and what was chosen to change and the reasons why just because i’m curious and i have some thoughts both loving and critical (ba dum tiss) about the contents of the first three eps but i think i’ll prob hold off on my personal I Didn’t Like This Choice until there’s a full season to contextualize it just because a bunch of stuff that i’m feeling more :/ about . the back of brain is like generating innumerable situations where said choice is forgivable/less frustrating to me so i will simply wait and hope to be given reasons to forgive
#that said . and this is said with full acknowledgement that the cast is very very involved in writing#there is an interesting trend of aspects of vex and keyleth’s core attitudes/fears being shifted to someone else or removed entirely#that is like. not super surprising given . some trends with female characters in animation writing#but is occasionally disappointing. not in a ruinous way at all just kind :/#i will hold off on my keyleth complaints re ep 3 until they have more grounding#but i will say i will mourn the loss of the ‘unproven ally’ aspect of vex vs saundor for the entirety of vex’s tlovm characterization#all of that said my attitude with tlovm will always remain. fun and cool additional story. i just think the writing for the show#isn’t always the strongest . like there are many occasions where my love for cr is what drives my engagement not the compellingness#of the writing. which is why i’ve been so hype about hearing they’re moving away from sticking as close to campaign as possible like.#PLEASE give me a satisfying narrative over one that matches the campaign. but when they Are pulling from the campaign#it’s occasionally frustrating to see trends in who loses more complex pieces#tlovm spoilers#tlovm#critical role

Wait why do you think Jason would never talk to Barbara if he saw early dickbabs I'm so curious 👀👀
bc the og stuff was shady!! babs was like. a decade older than him and flirted w him when he was a teen. not even bc she was that interested (she had the hots for bruce, which made sense bc they were both Adults lmao) but bc she liked the attention of having a cute teenaged boy fawning over her. honestly she's funny. kinda swag even. but mr "taking advantage of children is bad" todd probably wouldn't agree smh.
#asks#anon#let babs be morally questionable again!!#it was fun. but they (dc) hate to see a girlboss winning#also canon jason doesnt seem to like babs anywhere near as much as fandom thinks lmao#like he had the hots for her for a bit bc of one writer and then he just brushes her off the rest of the time#anyways ideal babs is woman who is just kinda a shitty person but also super skilled and important so ur stuck making nice w her#let me have at least something resembling complexity in my female characters!!#need to write a robin molester babs fic one day. but first i have to trick myself into caring enough about babs to write a fic about her

I'll be honest looking at your woman versions of artemy and daniil makes me feel like I have the plague itself since I start sweating and shaking with lesbian lust. they're soooooo good there are no words for it, thank u for blessing us with your art of them 💓
o7 glad you're liking them...!
i know they're not #much in terms of like character design since i'm just copy and pasting The Usual and then waving a magic wand at them but. well you know. if every game had crazy women in it i would play these games. give me the annoying cynical symbolist yuri where i can see homosexuality peeking through and I Will Now Play Your Game. i will.
#i could talk at length about how androcentric storytelling allows for male characters to be more complex & morally grey & interesting than#female characters; even well-written female characters; and i will Use My Body As A Shield in front of patho's female characters#but i can recognize with my eyes that like. they're not as hashtag explored#as some other male characters; & the main/playable characters are 2/3 men. right.#however. with the power of imagination i can and i will create weird cynical annoying yuri. for fun.#ring ring (answers)#anonymous#so herppy you liking them... it's fun to me. as someone who was madly in love with a brunette woman with brown eyes i wouldn't have been#able to play yurified haruspex route without twitching and squirming in my seat i'll tell you that much

ivy robinson is the prettiest boy and I mean that unironically in a gendered way
#what if I told you he was a gay trans man? what then?#she isn’t aware of it in most universes but I just. i know it in my soul#like I am fully aware that so much of Ivy’s story in inextricably related to her female-ness & her girl-ness by extension#(sex & gender as different concepts from where we stand. within the canon they're pretty interlinked but you get me)#and absolutely i don't mean to malign or detract from or ignore the significance of that within the bapo canon - not at all#and obviously ivy is an interesting and compelling and complex character in the way she exists in canon as a cis girl!#but like. just for fun. he is transmasc to me#sometimes he knows/realises this. sometimes he doesn't.#bare a pop opera#mouse talks bapo#Ivy Robinson#transmasc ivy robinson#i actually have many thoughts on this that may warrant an Actual Post but for now im rambling in the tags#for context I was thinking about bapo at work (as I am prone to do) and was struck by the concept of Ivy being right about her relationship#with/attraction to Jason being something more special (for lack of a better word) - on a deeply subconscious level she feels as though she#*belongs* with a boy Like Jason (read; a gay man) because on this subconscious level she knows she too is a gay man#[ask me to elaborate on the femaleness vs girlness aspect of it as it relates to Ivy and I will btw! I think it’s an interesting concept]

[Timmy Turner voice] I wish every Links Meet AU that uses Marin as a phantom to haunt and traumatize Link goes to hell no matter what
#No I am not vaguing any specific links meet au bc ive already seen four different ones that do this#Fun Fact! You can give ALTTP!Link different character conflict!#That doesn't butcher the themes and ending of one of the games!#And reduce a female character and arguably LOZ's first complex character to a flat source for man angst#Marin would murder Link if she found out he was remembering her and Koholint in trauma and tragedy#Rather than treasuring its memory and celebrating its existence#GENUINELY framing Link as wildly traumatized by the events of Link's Awakening the way so many ppl do#Completely destroys all thematic coherence in the game's ending and makes it wildly unsatisfying#Yes Koholint disappearing was sad. No Link did not kill an island no it would not haunt him like a ghost#It's a treasured memory and a net positive experience! I have OPINIONS on this and I'm CORRECT#And I'm calling out Links Meet AUs specifically bc those are the biggest offenders#Of stripping everyone else of depth and focus for the sake of white boy Link#If ur lucky then Zelda still has character depth but everyone else* is shit out of luck basically#*Exceptions apply ofc#Lots of stuff that's not links meet aus also interprets Marin in ways I don't personally like#I am picky#Some of which I'd argue are just. Bad.#But at least they often make an effort with her character#Links Meet AUs are the Link Only Show tho and I'm ANNOYED bc I WANT TO LIKE THEM#I AM A SUCKER FOR MULTIVERSE SHIT. U DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH THIS PAINS ME#Anyway. L + ratio + you did not consider the thematic implications of ur fanproject and it annoys me :(#My posts#Loz#Link's awakening#update when i first made this post i was genuinely not intending to single out any specific links meet aus#however i have since crunched the numbers and two thirds of the marin tag on ao3 is linked universe#and i would like to make it clear. i have no real issue with the actual comic or its portrayal of marin#mostly bc marin has not actually appeared or been addressed in the actual comic at all#however i do hope the linked universe FANDOM goes to hell no matter what

I know calling books “feminist” is a marketing ploy and not necessarily a reflection of the author’s intentions, particularly when applied to mythological retellings, but honest to god every book should be feminist automatically. Respecting women (on a subtextual level, at the minimum) is a given.
Considering a woman’s agency is in no way additional work and shouldn’t be unique in any way. This is especially important if the character is a minority of any variety—woc, disabled, trans, attracted to women, etc. It’s about dignity. Anything less than the utmost care is misogynistic.
If the women you write exist solely to tag #girlboss or #sapphic for sales, you have a problem. Reducing or even removing the male element doesn’t magically make you feminist. If you think the patriarchy is just the existence of men then you’re not a feminist you’re an idiot. Take a step back, stop writing, and read a multitude of fiction and nonfiction exclusively written by women. From all eras and parts of the world and genres, not just the current NYT bestseller list or current BookTok trend. Get some perspective before you come back or don’t come back at all.
#that book the female persuasion got to me#like that depiction of a lesbian made me want to scream#sapphics don’t exist to play into your fake ally narrative#you’re not doing anyone any favors by writing a scene where your main character is ‘totally cool’ with a lesbian’s attraction to them#the absurd power fantasy of cishet people writing a scene where a homosexual is attracted to them#then they give an ambiguous response & pat themselves on the back for what? not calling them slurs?#this goes beyond the terrible writing style it’s about what this says in a subtextual level about the authors view of others#you can have bad characters this doesn’t mean your women can’t have complex stories intersecting with bad people#it means you as the author need to treat them like a human being#women aren’t a quirk women aren’t a feature women aren’t an accessory#this isn’t cute this isn’t fun it’s not even ironically funny anymore I’m so heated these books succeed#anyway I have things to write I’m just so irritated

i really liked these additional comments and thought they deserved to be in the post
every time i post about male favoritism in the fandom i feel like i need to wear a shirt that says "i am not trying to tell you that it is wrong to like davekat i literally also like davekat if you come away with the assumption that my message is to stop liking the boy ships in homestuck you are missing the overall point which is arguably more detrimental than never having interacted with what i was trying to say in the first place" flashback to that person in my inbox like "just admit that you don't like davekat it's pretty obvious based on your posts that you have a problem with it" do i need to draw them holding hands or something to get you guys to trust me and engage with what i'm saying. would it help if i also threw in a subway surfers clip
#was just rambling so much to my bf about this last night actually#because we just got done watching a series with really questionable treatment of its female characters and im just soooo sick and tired of—#fandom acting like women are less interesting and not worth their time.#idk if it’s just the specific circles im in but the homestuck fandom seems better about this these days.#but overall any time some sort of series gets big if you check the tag it’s ALL yaoi#and it’s almost always made by people attracted to men who dont really understand that they constantly elevate men in every fandom space#i don’t CARE if you’re transmasc and really relate to gnc man number 36743 i dont have an issue with that#but i do care that nobody in the entire fucking fandom cares about the women or makes art for them#your projection in the end still just elevates men to the center of attention#and your insistence that since you’re now a man you couldn’t POSSIBLY relate to or project onto a woman strikes me as kinda dehumanizing!#’name your favorite female character’ ‘omg [man] he’s like a baby girl to me 😍’#admit you have never thought about the female characters once in your life.#i don’t need you to flip some magic switch and only care about female characters (although tbfh its fun and you should try it)#but i asking you to examine WHY you trend so hard in caring about men. is it because their personalities seem more deep complex & interest?#ask yourself WHY THAT IS. ask yourself what it is about these male characters that are fundamentally more intriguing to your analysis#because chances are it’s not that the female characters are boring#it’s that PLUS a billion other systemic biases stacking on top of each other#that YOU ARE PERPETUATING!!!!#okay im done ranting but. god. god damn.#it sucks so bad to see people just fully ignore how much of a real issue this is in fandom spaces.#yeah so you were born attracted to men and taught to constantly think about and prioritize their feelings. have you considered changing

3 episodes into season 7, and oh, Adelaide is mean. Adelaide is unhinged. Adelaide is feral, because she's been deeply hurt, and she is not in control of things, and she doesn't know how to cope with that, and so she bites, and she is spitting venom, and little does she know that this very venom is poisonous not only to people around her, but to herself as well.
This woman chose violence and is making it everyone's problem now, because deep down inside she's lost and confused, and maybe the best defense is a good offense, but is it really?
Ten out of ten, I'm going to love this season.
#anna speaks#anna (re)watches her italian soap opera#il paradiso delle signore#finalmente sono alla stagione 7 and y'aaaaall#adelaide di sant'erasmo is being so petty and i've never had more fun#because she's been hurt and now she's biting back and she's consumed by sadness and anger and ooooh yes give me complex female characters#season 7 is also the season of barberasmo of course i'm going to love this season

ohhhhh my god girl i don't careeeee
#love my roommate but urghhhh. sorry they dont make enough fictional female characters that interest u but u dont need to justify it to me#write your mlm its literally fine. sorry but ur not gonna gain my respect or approval by defending why u write more mlm than wlw#i dont care if u have equal amounts of each or not LOL we just have different tastes thats all there is to it#and I KNOOOOOOWWWW she writes femslash too im not denying that !!!!!!#most of my fav media is lesbian centric bc I have a strong connection to my identity as a dyke. so i gravitate towards things that explore-#that + complex relationships to gender + its social enforcement etcetc. and its easier for me to get attached to characters that i can-#connect with bc we have shared experiences or the world percieves us in similar ways or we percieve the world in similar ways etc#and shes said she DOESNT feel particularly attached to her sexuality in that way. so ofc shes not going to be looking for the same things-#in media and thats OKAY!!#literally have nothing against her writing gay men i like some fictional mlm relationships myself!! and its cool that she enjoys it#i just find it disappointing that we dont have much in common taste-wise bc thatd be more fun to talk abt#but thats why i come on tumblr dot com.. to talk abt fictional women w dykes who understand them like i do amen#and im happy to listen to her talk abt things she likes and projects shes clearly enjoying working on like thats awesome love to hear it#but sometimes its like shes trying to persuade me abt smth but theres nothing to persuade. i dont knooooow#like ik shes not trying to get me into her interests she already has plenty of friends who are. but theres no approval to win from me???#i think im just annoyed bc i feel like i cant rly talk abt the things im into w her bc she disliked them so much#and also annoying to be around someone who shares an identity w me but is clearly more uncomfortable w it than i am#maybe thats not even true actually the real reason im annoyed is bc ive had a long and exhausting week and im coming down from-#my first day on new meds and im soooo so so tired have i sajd that already. and my head hurts#and i want a fucking hug and im just projecting my lack of physical and emotional intimacy onto her bc she happens to be the person i-#spend the most time with. but thats really unfair of me its not her fault or obligation at all. ah i just want to shower and sleeeepp#and tomorrow day 2 of meds im gonna get so much shit done!!!!!!!! i hope.. i wanna finish drafting my comic too teehee#wouldnt it be so crazy if now im medicated i might actually be able to start and finish projects i reallyyyy want to do..#well i wont get my hopes up yet#anyway........#another day another 5 million tag rambling post complaining abt everything. and dont expect me to ever stop 😚#.diaries#literally why would i care abt the tastes of a girl whose fave character in tlt was naberius........#she rly had to pick one of the ONLY men and not even one of the particularly interesting ones. and shes not even straight???? her loss 🙄

one thing i really love about never stop blowing up is how brennan was like “ok so we’re doing a season set in a very specific time period with a genre that is not known for its representation. but we will still have poc people everywhere. the female characters will still be complex and important. the mob boss will be canonically bisexual.” and cait may was like “fuck you im giving this cool side character top surgery scars.”like everyone was willing to give themselves up to the conventions of the genre but only to the extent that it felt fun and liberatory. when it began to interfere with the values and morals of the d20 team they went “no actually, we’re changing this.”
#never stop blowing up#nsbu#dimension 20#d20#dimension 20 never stop blowing up#d20 never stop blowing up#brennan lee mulligan#cait may#kingskin#dropout tv#dropout#lee says things
