Newt Scamander x Reader One Shot- Christmas at Hogwarts
Summary: Christmas has come and the students at Hogwarts have returned to their homes for the break. All except you, a Seventh Year Muggleborn staying at Hogwarts for the holidays. It’s Christmas Eve and you’re feeling quite lonely- that is, until your friend Newt Scamander finds you in the dining hall by the fire. Soon you realize that Christmas may be far more magical than you’d hoped.
Warnings: Fluff overload. :)
Word count: 3.6k words
A/N: I know I’m posting this fic wayyy after Christmas, but it’s always Newt Scamander season in my heart and I couldn’t resist. ;D
#5- Christmas at Hogwarts
The fire was your only company in all of Hogwarts that night.
It blazed and crackled in the grate, warm and inviting as a dear friend. You scooted closer, shivering even underneath your thick coat. Your hands seemed incapable of warming up. No matter how close you held them to the fire, the warmth declined to accompany you for long. It was too painful a reminder of your family; like them, the heat pushed you away if you got too close, threatening to sear your skin. Yet too far and it felt like there was not a fire burning at all.
You swallowed your respite. It was Christmas Eve, and Hogwarts was decorated beautifully- golden tinsel strung along the window frames, evergreen wreaths with large acorns and red bows adorning the doors, and even an enormous pine tree set up in the corner, clothed in a myriad of twinkling lights and shining ornaments. But the décor was just another reminder of how alone you were. Everyone in your House had returned home to loving families and abundant gifts for Christmas- all except you.
You pulled your (Y/H) scarf tighter, rubbing your face with the soft cloth as you tried to thaw your freezing skin. You refused to let any tears fall. Yes, you were alone, but it was Christmas. There was solace in the good memories you had of years past, and no matter how desolate things seemed, you always felt that the magic in the air was stronger this time of year.
You had taken to drawing miniature snowmen in the fireplace cinders with your wand when you felt it: something small and warm brushing against your leg. Startled, you looked to the side but saw nothing. Then the same sensation rubbed against your other leg. As you turned, a furry little creature poked its head out from underneath your coat. It looked like a fluffy platypus, with a pink bill, pale feet, and tiny curved claws.
“Well hello, little fella,” you said, scooping the creature into your hands. It was incredibly soft. “Where did you come from?”
The creature purred as you stroked it tenderly, gazing up at you with shimmering black eyes. You laughed in delight as it scurried up your arm and snuggled between your scarf and your neck.
“Cold, are you?” You tucked in both ends of your scarf, creating a scooped blanket for the creature. “There. Is that better?”
It nuzzled into your neck and you laughed again as its fur tickled you. It was possible it escaped from one of the classrooms, but you didn’t feel the need to return it anywhere- at least, not for now. You felt the weight on your heart begin to lessen. Maybe you wouldn’t be so alone on Christmas Eve after all.
“Teddy?”
You craned your head around at the familiar voice. You hadn’t heard anyone enter the main hall- in fact, you had been sure you were the only one left in the whole building. As you wondered who it could be, a boy with a swath of ruddy hair emerged from the hall.
“Teddy? Don’t be a scoundrel. I better not catch you stealing any-” The boy stopped when he saw you. “Oh. (Y/N). I didn’t know you were here.”
“I didn’t know you were here either, Newt,” you said, a smile creeping up your face. The presence of your longtime friend was an even greater relief to your solemnity. “What are you doing here?”
He shifted, pulling at his bright yellow Hufflepuff scarf. “I-I came to find Teddy.”
“He’s with me,” you said, patting your scarf. “But I mean, why are you here- not at home with your family? It’s Christmas Eve.”
He didn’t speak for a long time. Eventually he said, “I... may have missed the last train.”
You gaped at him, a disbelieving laugh escaping your lips. “You missed the last train? How?”
He wouldn’t meet your eyes. It occurred to you that maybe he had been withheld from boarding for an unknown reason.
“I’m sorry,” you said. “I guess it’s just nice not to be alone.” When he didn’t reply, you offered, “Want to sit with me?”
His eyebrows twitched up as if you’d given him an umbrella on a bleak rainy day. Newt was undoubtedly much different than the rest of your friends- he was so incredibly gentle and humble in a way that was rare to find in anyone else. He was always generous in his kindness, but the moment even the smallest kindness was offered him back, he was so unprepared that it almost made you want to laugh.
He came and sat down a little ways away from you. You patted the floor next to you, beckoning him closer. “Come here. You’ll feel the fire better.”
It was impossible to tell if the redness on his cheeks was a blush or the glow of the fire. Slowly, he scooted to sit next to you.
“He’s taken a liking to you,” he mumbled. “Teddy, I mean.”
“I think he’s taken more of a liking to my scarf. I can’t say I blame him.”
Newt smiled briefly, staring at the embers on the ground. “Nifflers may pride on materialism, but they know a pure heart when they see one.”
Something about the words warmed your insides. “Where did you find him anyway?” you asked.
“You could say he’s a family pet.”
“Oh. Your mother keeps magical creatures, right?”
“She breeds Hippogriffs,” said Newt. “Some of the other creatures are...adopted family members.”
You gazed contentedly into the fire. “That sounds nice.”
Newt stole a glance at you, playing with the rim of his cloak. “If I may ask... why are you here, (Y/N)?”
It was your turn to run short of words. The truth was that you were a Muggleborn and your family vehemently disapproved of magic. Some of the professors at Hogwarts had hexed them for years into believing that you went to a boarding school like any other, but last year the truth got out. Your family ordered you to stop attending Hogwarts. When you refused, they said you could stay- so long as you didn’t return home.
You still loved your family and missed them dearly. But you couldn’t deny the magic in your veins. You couldn’t leave Hogwarts behind, not when it had been your second home for so long. Not when it meant saying goodbye to the friends you had made.
Instead of saying any of this, you gave Newt an encouraging smile and said, “I couldn’t make it home for the holidays.”
A comfortable silence passed between you two, broken only by the crack and snap of the logs in the fire. In that moment it seemed you had bonded in a way you never had before. There was something about being alone together on a holiday when you were meant to be with everyone that united your shivering hearts. You thought that if it had to be anyone here with you tonight on Christmas Eve, you were glad it was Newt Scamander.
“(Y/N)?” said Newt after a while.
“Yes?”
He seemed to be treading carefully. “How would you like to come to Hogsmeade with me?”
You blinked at him before breaking into a grin. “Do you really mean it?”
“Well, only if it’s something you’d like to do-”
You laid an excited hand on his knee. “That sounds wonderful. What are we waiting for? Let’s go!”
Newt appeared so startled by your touch that he sat frozen in place as you jumped up and bounded down the hall. You stopped at the doors and turned back to face him. “Come on Newt, don’t be a slowpoke,” you said, a teasing tone sliding into your voice. Teddy the Niffler chittered in agreement.
Blushing deeper, Newt pushed to his feet and followed you down the hall. “Don’t you turn against me now, Teddy.”
If it could have been possible for a Niffler to snicker, he would have. You laughed at the two of them. “Race you to the front gates!”
Newt didn’t have time to reply before you took off. Smiling to himself, he ran after you, the sounds of laughter and clicking soles on stone floors filling the lonely castle with a beautiful kind of music.
******
The snow had been falling heavily since morning and was settled so thickly across the cobblestone pathway that you felt like you were walking on cotton candy. You were still panting and flushed with heat from your sprint throughout the castle, and the frigid air blowing your hair away from your face was more welcoming in that moment than any fire could have been. Your breaths came out like transparent white clouds as you turned around and triumphantly pumped your fists in the air. “I win!”
Newt, panting just as hard and clutching his side, nodded fervently. You wanted to giggle again at the sight of him- one pant leg rolled a bit higher than the other, his scarf tossed askew around his shoulders, his cloak hanging crookedly around his body. You had to resist an urge to ruffle his already messy hair, which was quickly becoming powdered white with snow.
You peeked inside your scarf to check on the Niffler. “You alright in there, little buddy?”
The creature’s eyes were wide with exhilaration. He gave you a sweet kiss on the chin and you laughed as its ticklish fur caressed your skin.
“He’d prefer to be carried all day if you let him,” Newt said, crunching across the snow to you. “Though I’d be careful. He tends to steal shiny things.”
“This little guy, a thief?” you scratched his soft belly. “That couldn’t be.”
“Have you lost anything?”
You playfully bumped him with your elbow. “Got nothing to lose. Come on, we’d better go before they douse the lanterns.”
The snow proved as deep and noncompliant as it looked from afar as you and Newt treaded along the path. Each of your steps sank down until the snow was nearly to your knees, making every few steps quite arduous work. Newt came up with the brilliant idea to magic the both of you a pair of snowshoes, and from then on the going was far easier.
The two of you were chatting about your semesters, your midterm exams, and your plans after Hogwarts when you reached the hilltop that led down into Hogsmeade village. It looked like a Christmas town, with slanted rooftops layered with snow, light gray smoke trailing from chimneys, and sparkling green-and-red lights along the storefronts. You even spotted a few decorated Christmas trees in windows and in front of squat buildings.
By then the cold had seeped back into your bones and left you shivering to your core. Newt, dressed similar to you, was clenching his jaw to keep his teeth from chattering. Nothing in the world seemed more appealing right then than to huddle up in one of the Hogsmeade pubs next to a fireplace, preferably with a cup of something hot. But an idea had crept into your mind.
“What’s that?” you gasped.
Newt furrowed his brow, searching the scene below. “What?”
“That, down there.”
“The village?”
“No, to the left of it.”
You stepped backward as he stepped forward to see. “The forest?”
“Next to the forest.”
“I’m not sure I understand-”
Newt was cut off as a huge, crude snowball hit him clean in the back with a splat! He jumped, whirling around questioningly, one hand already on his wand. Then he saw your impish grin.
“Does this mean war?” he asked rather timidly.
You scooped up more snow and rolled it into a ball. “This means war.”
Newt dove as you aimed the next snowball at him. He gathered one and took aim at you, though his force was poor. The snowball came just short of your feet.
“Afraid to hit a girl, Scamander?” you teased. “I’m sure Teddy could throw harder than that.”
“I’m only afraid it wouldn’t be very gentlemanly of me,” he said as another of your artillery smacked him on the shoulder.
“This should be an easy win then!”
The two of you ran down the hill, peppering each other with snowballs, dodging and rolling in the snow, the sound of your laughter sweetening the lonely night air. The ice was numbing your fingers and your sides were aching with exertion, but you didn’t care. You hadn’t had this kind of fun in a long time.
You darted to a nearby tree to restock when a cluster of snow larger than your head exploded upon the side of your face. You looked up, mouth open, and stared in disbelief at the Hufflepuff.
“Sorry!” Newt said quickly, eyes wide. “I didn’t mean to hurt you, I-I didn’t realize-”
He was cut off as you whipped out your wand and, grinning from ear to ear, lifted a mountain of snow into the air above his head. With a flick you let it drop, effectively drowning him from head to toe in a small avalanche.
He burst from the little mountain, sputtering and shaking snow out of his eyes. “You cheated,” he gasped. “Magic.”
“Whoever said there were any rules?”
You granted him a moment to pull himself out of the snow and get back on his feet. He gave you a playfully hesitant look. In the next moment, his wand was in his hand and a fleet of snowballs were soaring towards you.
You retaliated to match, sending torrents to meet him and diverting his attacks. He’d finally begun to give the competition you were looking for.
You slipped as he used magic to shift the snow beneath your feet, seeing that he was rolling a snowball large enough to cloak the forest. While he was distracted, you caused a ball to hit him in the back of the head, impeding his focus. In one fell swoop, you made a gust of wind knock him to his knees and destroyed the giant snowball before it could approach you. You waved your wand vivaciously and tiny snowballs about the size of chocolate frogs ambushed him from all sides.
Newt struggled beneath the attack, but he was unable to gather his wits in the firefight. At last he shouted, “You win! You win! I surrender!”
With a swish the ambush ceased. You strode toward him, tossing your scarf over your shoulder in victory. “I win for the second time tonight, Scamander. You’re off your game.”
Newt looked like he was trying not to smile. “Consider it Christmas spirit. I’m feeling gracious.”
You reached out and dusted some of the snow from his hair. “Perhaps. Or perhaps that’s just an excuse.”
“Perhaps.” His voice turned quiet. You were suddenly aware of how close you two were.
“Well, as the winner, I should get some kind of prize, don’t you think?” you said.
He’d been staring at the ground, avoiding prolonged eye contact as he usually did, but now his gaze snapped up to meet yours. “Yes. I suppose so.”
Your heart had begun to thump erratically and you weren’t exactly sure why. It cut through your puckish bravado, stilling your thoughts and making them run wild all at once. He was close enough that you could smell the comforting scent of the fire sunk into his cloak and see the remains of snow still stuck to his eyelashes.
Newt wasn’t looking at your eyes anymore. He was looking at your lips.
He’s my friend, you thought. He had been for years. But if he was simply that, why were you suddenly feeling this way?
Your head leaned closer to him ever so infinitesimally. His did the same, as if compelled by some external power. Perhaps it was the magic in the air or even the spirit of Christmas, but you didn’t allow yourself to think about what you did next.
You took him by the scarf and kissed him.
You felt a flicker of surprise go through his body, and if you were being honest, you were surprised too. But in the next moment his stiffness melted away and he sank deeper into the kiss. One of his hands came up to cup your face ever so delicately as if you were a dream made of snow that would swirl away in an instant.
It seemed that you two stood there for hours, yet once you pulled away it felt that less than seconds had passed. You and Newt appeared to be locked in place by each other’s gaze, breaths coming short in little white clouds. He was blushing so profoundly that his cheeks were almost as red as his hair. He took a shaky breath and leaned forward again, and you could sense the insatiable desire that had now awoken within him, how one kiss seemed to open doors to a million thoughts and longings the both of you had stored so deeply within that you hadn’t ever acknowledged it.
Your lips had barely met for the second time when something furry barged its way in front of your face. Both you and Newt stumbled back, startled. Then you erupted into laughter.
“A jealous one, are you?” you snatched Teddy from where he’d run atop your head and poked him in the side. He warbled indignantly.
Chuckling, you looked back up at Newt. A grin was plastered on his face that was so broad you truly believed it had the capacity to light a shooting star.
You stepped closer to him and set Teddy on his shoulder, wrapping the Niffler up in Newt’s scarf. Your fingers lingered on his chest for a moment before you turned your eyes to the ground, feeling heat sweep your cheeks.
“That was a pretty good reward,” you said bashfully.
“You should win more often,” mumbled Newt. You two would have probably stood there smiling at the ground like idiots for the rest of the night if Teddy hadn’t released a chirp of impatience.
“He must be cold,” Newt bundled the Niffler underneath his cloak.
“To the village?” you suggested.
“To the village,” he agreed.
You two set off on the path you’d been on before, and even though it had to be nearly midnight by now, the moon and stars seemed to shine brighter, and the Christmas lights decorating Hogsmeade Village twinkled with greater joy. As you walked, you felt Newt’s hand brush yours. You slid your fingers into his and the connection sent pleasant shivers up your arm.
You came upon a homely pub with a sign out front that read THREE BROOMSTICKS INN. Newt held the door open for you and the delicious scent of peppermint eggnog and baked frosted pastries wafted out to the street.
Despite how quiet the street had been, the pub was bursting with customers, all huddled in groups or pairs, all sipping some heavenly hot beverage that warmed your stomach by its very smell. Deep-bellied laughter echoed off the wooden beams of the arched roof. A cozy fire crackled in the great hearth.
You ordered two hot butterbeers and sat on the floor in front of the fire. Newt sat next to you, and as soon as he did Teddy scampered out of his scarf and into your lap.
“Traitor,” Newt whispered, but his voice was so innocent it made you grin.
The butterbeers came round and you wanted to bathe yourself in its warmth. As the two of you took blessedly long sips, you sighed and rested your head on Newt’s shoulder. Earlier tonight, you had been sitting and staring at a similar fire, thinking about how you’d be alone on Christmas Eve. And while all your friends and house mates would be surrounded by family tomorrow morning, opening their gifts, you knew that you had gotten the best gift of all.
“Thank you, Newt,” you murmured.
He blinked. “For what?”
“For being you,” you said. “For being here when no one else was.”
He was quiet for a long time. Eventually he said, “Merry Christmas, (Y/N).”
“Merry Christmas, Newt.”
The two of you sat by the fire so long that you had nearly drifted to sleep on his shoulder. The other customers were singing carols and clinking glasses, and in that moment, you wouldn’t rather be anywhere else.
The next thing you knew, Newt was gently nudging you awake. You looked up, rubbing sleep from your eyes, at a bundled, slim young man with a head of dark hair covered by a winter hat. Perhaps you were just incredibly sleepy, but he had a striking resemblance to Newt.
He knelt to get on your level. “What am I going to do with you, Newt?” He ruffled Newt’s hair. “Missed the train? Really?”
Newt just smiled. “You came back for me?”
“I can’t very well leave you here for Christmas, can I?” The young man turned his eyes to you. “I’m Theseus. Newt’s brother.”
“(Y/N),” you said.
Theseus looked between you and Newt, a sly grin creeping up his face. “Would you like to come with us?” he asked.
“Come with you? Where?”
“Home,” Theseus said simply.
You glanced at Newt. He was staring at your lips again. He looked up to meet your eyes. “Please,” he said quietly.
You thought you might melt into a frosty puddle right there on the floor. “I would love that. Very much.”
“Alright then.” Theseus offered you a hand and pulled you to your feet. He patted his brother’s shoulder. “Left in Hogwarts on Christmas. Just like my brother. Shall we?”
You slung your arm around Newt’s. “We shall.”

I already have a Thanksgiving chapter for Stu(died), but there is suppose to be a Christmas chapter too. So if you'd like a snip snip, here it is.
~
“You like her,” Feyre notes softly.
But Cassian can barely hear what she says. Her words slur together, blending into the background of small-town voices and the hum of familiarity. He’s too busy staring at Nesta anyway to attend to what she says.
Nesta looks at wooden Christmas ornaments from across the stands, and her hair floats down her back when it’s usually in braids and she is the embodiment of the word home. He knows that to be truer than any fact he’s memorized or any papers he’s read just to impress Nesta with his knowledge of the human genome. And as he watches her stare at the ornaments, Cassian wonders if he should not buy one himself to commemorate the fact that he is here with her, that he gets to see her like this... If only for a four-hour ride back to her family home.
Nesta takes great care to mind her own personal space, Cassian finds in his analysis. She moves away quickly if others move too close to her. She lightly touches the star-shaped and acorn-shaped wood and moves off to the side, out of people’s way. It’s a wonder to see someone so opinionated and assertive and confident, someone more arrogant than he’s ever known her to be shy… trying so hard to remain unseen.
How can she really think she’ll go unnoticed?
Nesta’s a star made only for the tops of trees.
“That’s it!”
Cassian startles as Feyre claps at his side.
“I’m going to have to help. This isn’t a mission for the truly novice.”
“Novice?”
But Feyre continues, a spark of determination in her eyes. “You can be a hopeless romantic, fine. But you can’t be so hopeless, you never make it to the romantic.”
Cassian doesn’t bother mentioning the fact that he thinks he’s been doing pretty well with her sister so far, regardless of the fact that she walks away from him every time he joins a booth she’s at. Two kisses does not make a novice.
“Nesta loves gas stations, you know,” Feyre lists, raising a finger. Number One. “She probably wouldn’t want you to know that, but I’m telling you this for a reason so you can have a leg up. You’re going to need help getting through to her. She loves gas stations and grocery stores. Books. Tea. Romance—don’t let her convince you that she doesn’t want to be romanced.”
Feyre points at him, giving out commands. She looks at him as if he should have been taking notes. She raises a finger as if to say wait and she unzips her backpack as if to hand him a pad of paper and a pen. Jot this down.
“Nesta hates vulnerability so you’re going to have to be deceptive. Don’t go and ruin things by being honest. Coercion is the only way you’ll survive.”
Cassian’s beginning to see the family resemblance.
~
I've been hard at work finishing the next chapter and it felt weird posting it in October, so since the Thanksgiving chapter is posted, it might finally be time to post the next chapter so I can finish this before Christmas.

Plus bonus winter wonderland view from my living room window!
I got to be there for "baby's first christmas market" as I went to the market with a friend of mine and her baby. That was pretty cute! The market was gorgeous as well, though unfortunately it was bloody cold and my back stiffed up on me. That was less... pleasant...
The christmas market itself was great though! They always have very artistic stalls with lots of handmade stuff. I had so much fun looking at all the beautiful things! If someone handed me 1000€ I could have easily spent it there and brought presents for everyone. As it is, I only bought one present and some presents for myself. Because I can!
I got myself some very mori kei-esque decor. The first purchase was a felted fairy/fae creature in a brown garment with a hazelnut hat. They look so precious! The second was a medium sized wooden stamp. I've actually got a bit of a collection started here - I bought four such hand whittled wooden stamps years ago as a teenager, because they look so gorgeous. Actually, I have a stamp collection in general but these are extra special with the wood used and their natural look. The texture and shapes are very pleasing. I decided to add stamp number 5 to the collection.
On the second (and final) lap of the christmas market I also had to buy myself a big wooded plate stamp. It's SO gorgeous!! I couldn't believe my eyes almost when I first saw it. And it was surprisingly affordable, for it's quality and size. I would have estimated about double the prize. I decided I'm worth to spend money on and took the beautiful plate home! ♥
I'm planning to do a "stamping session" sometimes next year. Hold me to it!!
Picture 1: A beautiful snowy view out of a window. You can see flat roofs covered in snow and many snow covered trees! A winter wonderland.
Picture 2: A hazelnut fairy/fae creature made from felt. They're wearing a long brown garment and a hat with two hazelnuts on it. Their scarf is a green hazelnut leaf. They look happy! They've been wrapped in plastic to transport them home safely.
Picture 3: A medium sized hand whittled wood stamp, with the pattern traced in white to show it better. The shape has a vague cone shape (like a tree cone) and the pattern is reminiscent of leaves and ferns. It's photographed on a knitted reddish-and-magenta coloured sock.
Picture 4: A close-up of a big wooden stamp - it's a plate about the size of two hands held next to each other. The pattern is again traced in white. It consists of interlocking flowers and ornamental shapes and leaves.
Picture 5: A weathered looking blue wall shelf is shown. It houses two flowerpots and a white bird cage, styled with fabric flowers and fake birds and crystals. There's some more decorative pieces scattered about. Newly added are the medium-sized wooden stamp, the hazelnut fairy and the big wooden plate stamp. I also grouped a little plate piled with chestnuts and acorns in front of the hazelnut fairy and wooden plate stamp. They just go together!
Picture 6: A close-up of the new addition of the hazelnut fairy and the big wooden plate stamp, with the little plate filled with chestnuts and acorns in front of it.

Yule on a budget
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9dbda754b07bd1cdc3fc0e89db0c0904/a54770d9c7d4f489-c2/s540x810/21fedfd45570b3fdab88bdbc2e44d48b95a7c729.jpg)
YULE on a budget
Make your own ornaments!- you could use salt dough and make shapes like the moon , sun and stars. Decorate pinecones with seed, acorns feathers and other items found in nature. You can also make a pentacle by using pipe cleaners, or fill an empty ornament with magical items to create a spell jar to hang right on your tree.
Yule smudge sticks- you could use holiday appropriate plants to create one, If you are not allergic to them see the works cited at the bottom for the article on how to make one.
Winter night incense- scents have a way of bringing memories back to us and even make time stand still. You first need to determine if you wish to make a stick or cone. Loose is supposedly the easiest form to make. You mix the scents in a small jars. Make Your Own Batch of Winter Nights Incense for Yule (learnreligions.com)
Gingerbread poppets- a poppet is a magical doll used to bring about good, normally it represents a person and they can be made out of felt and then hung on the tree. At this time of the year it is good for love prosperity, healing and protection
Yule herbal sachet- use a bit of fabric and add herbs to make your house smell great! You can place the sachet in a drawer to give your clothing a soft holiday scent or under your pillow to aid in sleep.
Make your own greeting card- you can use rubber stamps, make a snowflake card, a sun card stained glass, maybe even a Krampus card.
Oils- you can make your own oil blend by mixing different oils in a carrier oil you could use pine, orange, cedar, juniper, frankincense.
Make a tree topper- You can also make an all natural tree topper and place it on top of your holiday tree.
Orange slices- you slice orange slices and place them on foil in the oven at 200 , 3 inches apart (sprinkle with sugar if you plan to eat them) and then bake flipping them every once in a while for 2-2 ½ hours till they are dry watch them closely towards the end to make sure they don’t burn. You can then hang them around the house.

A Christmas Prince (USA, 2017)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c69fd7e75dc65b2889af66d350d4cb56/tumblr_inline_p0ap0rvK901roo7eq_540.jpg)
And now, a special bonus edition, not for any actual occasion, but just because we freaking felt like it. God bless you, Netflix, for this glorious season when all the worst Hallmark movies ever made arise out of the depths for easy streaming upon demand. Happy holidays, Romcomathon readership! (We will also be watching an equally terrible non-Netflix movie, it looks like, on actual Christmas. Prepare yourselves.)
Predictions: Alex, having read the description, knew that it was about a reporter and a prince, perhaps falling in love through a house of lies. Kat, not having read the description, predicted that Christmas was a place as well as a time, and perhaps the Prince of Christmas -- A CHRISTMAS PRINCE, IF YOU WILL -- was looking for a bride. At Christmastime. Perhaps the Kingdom of Christmas only merges with the regular world at Christmastime!!!! Who can say.
Plot: Uh… Kat was joking, but may not have been entirely mistaken. Whereas she was picturing some sort of seasonal magical fairy kingdom, Aldovia is instead a supposedly real country that crowns its monarchs at the Christmas Eve Ball???? But let's back up a bit and explain.
Rose McIver is a "junior editor," aka peon?? at a fashion magazine in "New York" (a whole variety of skylines were used here, though...huh), who inexplicably gets sent to a foreign country to cover the possible abdication of a playboy prince, Ben Lamb. Obviously he turns out to not really be a playboy; she assumes a fake identity by accident (is mistaken for the princess's soon-to-arrive new American tutor); and she immediately finds her way into both his good graces and those of his wayward, overprotected little sister -- who, by the way, has spina bifida AND is super sad about their father's death a year ago. There was literally not a heartstring that this movie did not attempt to tug, y’all; we are shocked that there wasn't a baby animal of some kind wearing a ribbon around its neck at a pivotal moment.
Anyway, Prince Ben Lamb just doesn't know if he wants to be king, guys. Can he handle it? Can he handle it?? No, kind of seems like he can't, tbh, but since his scheming cousin, next in line, seems like a truly terrible person, he should probably try. But wait! Plot twist! Rose McIver stumbles across an incredibly poorly-hidden secret compartment in the king's hunting lodge -- after having been rescued by Prince Ben Lamb from a wolf in the snowy woods, mind you (...yes) -- and discovers SECRET ADOPTION PAPERS. PRINCE BEN LAMB IS ADOPTED, AND NOBODY KNEW!!!! Well, except his parents, presumably.
Here we start a new paragraph specifically to ask HOW. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THE ROYAL FAMILY SOMEHOW ADOPTED A CHILD AND KEPT IT SECRET FROM EVERYONE. EVERYONE.
Naturally, Scheming Cousin and his lady friend (actually Prince Ben Lamb's former lady friend, but let's not get into it) discover this as well, because Rose McIver is the worst undercover reporter in the world, and they decide to keep this information under their fancy evil hats until the Right Moment. When is the Right Moment, you ask? Obviously, at the Christmas Eve Ball/coronation. Yes, two for the price of one. The Aldovian monarchy is v. practical and/or thrifty that way! They also have the Prime Minister do the ceremony (perhaps not wanting to spring for a priest), and he (perhaps having never before seen a coronation?!) runs the whole thing like a wedding. Does anyone object to the prince's crowning, he asks, or forever hold your peace?? Guess who doesn't hold their peace, guys -- lol, it's Scheming Cousin. THE PRINCE IS ADOPTED!!!!!!!!
Man, what unfortunate timing, now that Prince Ben Lamb has finally gotten his act together and agreed to be king. Also unfortunate: the scheming duo reveals the truth about Rose McIver's identity. WHAT IS EVEN LEFT FOR PRINCE BEN LAMB TO BELIEVE IN???? He doesn't know who Rose McIver is! HE DOESN'T KNOW WHO HE IS EITHER. Also, the Prime Minister clearly has no mind of his own, and the Queen somehow has no power???? (We suppose that makes sense, though, since this nation is apparently stuck in like the 1100s or something, because girls still can't inherit and the line skips right over Prince Ben Lamb’s sister??) Anyway, they're all just like, welp, it's Christmas Eve, so we couldn't possibly wait a day to reasonably discuss our nation’s future, and instead we absolutely must crown Scheming Cousin immediately. All is lost.
Rose McIver, meanwhile, is at the airport headed home, all dejected and stuff, when she has a sudden epiphany about the secret poem the prince showed her in the hunting lodge. (SO MUCH SECRET STUFF IN THIS HUNTING LODGE, YOU GUYS. WHAT WAS EVEN GOING ON WITH THE KING. WHY DID HE SHARE NOTHING WITH HIS QUEEN OR HIS COUNCIL????) She rushes back to the castle and breaks open the homemade acorn Christmas ornament that the dead king left for the queen (...yeah), and lo and behold, a secret decree naming his adopted son worthy to be king. The king even took care to mention that it wasn't about blood or anything, but rather about Prince Ben Lamb's good character, which incidentally, Prince Ben Lamb was worried about. HOW PRESCIENT OF HIM. (Though not as prescient as if he had done the normal thing and publicized this before his death and avoided this whole debacle. :|)
Rose McIver bursts into the SECOND coronation; the Prime Minister again has no trouble accepting this latest sudden, poorly-verified turn of events; and Prince Ben Lamb gets properly crowned. Rose McIver goes back home to “New York” and writes a very schmaltzy story about how great he is. Her editor, surprisingly, does not want to publish this CRAZY STORY that she paid for Rose McIver to get, so Rose McIver quits and starts a weirdly successful blog instead. Then, on New Year's Eve, King Ben Lamb turns up on the doorstep of her father's diner and proposes to her. YUP, YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY, READER. THE KING OF A NATION PROPOSES TO A WOMAN HE KNEW FOR ONE WEEK UNDER AN ASSUMED IDENTITY. THE END.
Best Scene: It is impossible to choose, perhaps because there was not a single scene in this glorious Christmas masterpiece that did not seem like it had been ripped from another film and spliced into this one in iMovie. The number of lines that we predicted out loud before they were said on screen was, shall we say, astonishing, but then again, not astonishing at all.
Worst Scene: All of the best scenes were the worst scenes, and all of the worst scenes were the best scenes.
Best Line: "You haven't thought about this. I mean, we barely know each other." -- Rose McIver, saying what we are all thinking. I mean, who would marry this royal idiot?? HE HAS BAD JUDGMENT AND WILL SOON BE DEPOSED, AND THEN WHERE WILL YOU BE?? Points for having good sense for once, Rose McIver. Points lost for capitulating moments later.
Worst Line: "A palace is a lonely place for a king without a queen." -- King Ben Lamb, during his proposal speech, all of which was awful, just to be clear. Although we did enjoy how his answer to pretty much all her objections was, money can solve everything! I mean. He's not entirely wrong. The royal family is probably very rich from all the money they've saved on coronations.
Highlights of the Watching Experience: Ummmm, reading the article that Entertainment Weekly wrote about it?? This article, a journalistic tour de force of the sort Rose McIver could never compose, addresses all of the concerns that we could not fit in this blog post. It is accurate and hilarious. Read it here.
Also, this whole watching experience was a highlight of our year. Literally the tropiest film we've ever watched. Cannot believe how many different clichés they managed to cram into one movie.
How Many POC in the Film: Like...2-4? One of her two friends was black (the other was a gay man, of course), a jerk reporter at the magazine was also black, and there may or may not have been an Asian person or two sprinkled in in Aldovia, with hardly any lines. Not awesome, for 2017.
Alternate Scenes: So, how did Rose McIver end up needing to be rescued from a wolf, you ask? Well, it's because she stole a horse from the stables to stalk Prince Ben Lamb, and then it threw her and left her in the snow, à la Beauty and the Beast. Only this low-budget cinematic wonder could only afford one wolf, evidently. Excitingly, though, in the moment before this wolf came on screen, we were wondering if it was going to be a werewolf, and if this movie was REALLY going to take a turn. Truthfully, readers, we kind of wish that had happened. We would watch that alternate film. Possible titles -- iWerewolf? A Christmas Wolf?
Was the Poster Better or Worse than the Film: BETTER. Now, we know we’ve suggested that no film could be better than this one, but this badly-photoshopped family holiday card is clearly the poster for a movie about the Prince of Hell, who rises out of his pentacle in a tower of flame to claim as his bride Rose McIver, who happens to love Christmas. Whereas of course the Prince of Hell hates Christmas, because it's Jesus’s birthday, and he is the Prince of Hell (duh). Hijinks ensue; eventually they overcome their differences, and maybe the Prince of Hell abdicates his hellish throne in order to live on Earth with Rose McIver. The final scene is, of course, them in their charming living room, enjoying Christmas. The Prince jokingly puts a devil-themed ornament on the Christmas tree (yes, they make those; we double-checked). "Oh, you!" says Rose McIver. They giggle together. Pan out into the snow.
Score: 4 out of 10 pasted-together-out-of-a-random-Hallmark-plot-generator smooches. Soooooo bad, you guys. Probably zero actual-movie smooches. But 10 out of 10 smooches in our still-laughing hearts!
Ranking: 72, out of the 109 movies we’ve seen so far. Sadly, we would rather rewatch this than a shocking number of other things. IT WASN'T GOOD, JUST TO BE CLEAR. NOT GOOD AT ALL. Yet...what a grand old time we had. This is the most perfect terrible movie we have ever watched or could ever imagine watching.

Merry Christmas, Imoutato!
Moon Dust
Modern AU Midnight Cinderella Christmas Story
Requested by Ma-chi. Happy Holidays, Emi!–Rizos Rojizos
“This is the last ornament, Emi. Would you do the honor of lighting the tree?”
“My pleasure. And… voilà!”
The Christmas tree came to life as Emi plugged the cord. She and Byron have been busy the last couple of hours assembling and decorating it, after their original plan of stargazing came to a halt by the weather. Yet, as the couple stood beside each other, contemplating the fruits of their hard work, they smiled with satisfaction. The artificial tree was decorated with golden, silver and blue ornaments, with a sky blue ribbon wrapped around it. They ditched the acorn ornaments at the last minute for poinsettias instead, and the touch of red really made the tree pop.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
“Yes. I’m glad we did this together.”
Byron grabbed a big, fluffy blanket and motioned Emi to sit on the floor. She did, crossing her legs, and soon after he followed suit. Byron sat just behind her, wrapping them both with the blanket, and pulling Emi closer to him so she could rest her back on his chest and her head on his shoulder. As he locked his arms around her, Emi felt herself relax, although she was self-aware that she was blushing. Byron’s chuckle didn’t help. He knew.
“Your cheeks are two poinsettias, Emi.” He said, caressing one with his finger.
“Don’t mock me! Whose fault it is!?” She replied with a pout.
“Ah, I guess it would be mine,” he said with amusement in his voice, “but poinsettias are cute.”
They snuggled together in a comfortable silence that got broken by Byron shortly after. “You know… these Christmas lights look like stars.”
Emi looked at him, then frown a bit as she gazed at the Christmas tree. “Oh, really? Then…”
“What?”
“Nothing! Just a silly, passing thought.”
“Oh?” As Byron squeezed her, he added, “You can tell me.”
“Well… it’s just that what you said made me think. What if the whole universe is a giant Christmas tree, and we–the stars, the planets, and all the celestial bodies–are the ornament lights?”
Byron hold his breath and stared at Emi intently with his dark eyes. “That’s…” He hold her nape with one hand and pulled her for a long, deep kiss. Then he broke it moments later with a loud gasp. “That was beautiful, Emi… God, I love it so much.” He kissed her again, and again, and when they broke their kiss, their cheeks were tinted pink and their eyes glossy with love and a hint of desire. Byron let out a sigh. “I’ve decided. I originally wanted to wait until Christmas, but screw it. I want to do it now!"
"Huh?” Emi blinked in confusion. It was rare to hear Byron talk like that. As he crawled to the Christmas tree, her confusion grew more. “Do what, exactly?”
“Give you your Christmas present, of course.” Byron moved around a couple of wrapped boxes that they laid down as a finishing touch, which were Al and Nico’s presents, until he found what he was looking for. He crawled back and sat in front of Emi, holding a tiny box between his hands. “This is for you,” he said.
“Oh, but… are you sure? It’s not Christmas yet! We were supposed to open our presents together with Albert and Nico.”
“I know, but let’s say that I got a little bit of Christmas’ inspiration. I really want to share this with you now.” Raising his hands a bit, he added, “Do you accept?"
Emi’s gaze switched between Byron’s hopeful, child-like expression in his face, and his hands. Finally, she nodded and took the box from him. Her fingers trembled a bit as she tore the wrapping paper and found a little black box with no distinctive marks on it. She let escape a gasp, wondering what could be inside. Byron remained silent, waiting patiently. Without further delay, she opened it. "Oh!"
It was a pretty silver sterling necklace. Emi wrapped the chain between her fingers and raised it to her eye level to admire it better. The pendant, a glass teardrop vial, swayed in the air. A small star-shaped charm attached to it seemed to twinkle by the Christmas lights. There was something grey inside the teardrop vial, but Emi couldn’t tell what it was. "It’s beautiful!” She said, excitement in her voice. “But… what is it?”
Byron flashed her a smug smile as he replied, “It’s Lunar dust.”
“Oh… wait, what!?” Emi shot him a look of disbelief. “You mean, this is an actual piece of the moon?” As Byron nodded, still wearing that smug smile of his, she looked at the vial, then at him again, “Is this for real? How did you…”
“I have my sources.” He interrupted her gently. “I have heard that lovers say to each other, ‘I’ll give you the moon.’ So I decided to do just that. Do you know why?” As Emi urged him to continue with her eyes, he took the hand that was still holding the necklace between his. “Because you are my moon, Emi. Ever since you became part of my life, I can’t fathom the idea of being without you.” He squeezed her hand gently. “You’re such a strong, intelligent, kind, and sweet woman. You shine with a light so bright and pure, it lightens everything around you—and you leave me in awe. I am proud to stand by your side and be yours.” Byron wiped away the tears that threatened to fall from Emi’s eyes, and added, “This little gift is a token of my undying love and support for you.”
“Byron…! Oh, my God!” She wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug. “I’ll treasure this forever, I promise! Thank you!”
Byron broke their hug gently and took the necklace to put it around his beloved’s neck. “It’s my pleasure.” He whispered in her ear.
Emi touched the necklace delicately, and then she blushed and covered her eyes with the palm of her hand, laughing nervously. “Oh, my!”
It was Byron’s turn to be confused. “What is it?” He asked, arching an eyebrow.
“It’s just that, compared to this, my gift for you is… kind of silly.”
“I’ll be the judge for that. If it comes from you, I hardly doubt it.”
“Can I… can I give it to you, then? Since you gave me yours.”
Byron nodded. “If you wish.”
Emi took a rectangular package tied up with twine. She handed it over so solemnly, that Byron reciprocated the gesture as he took it. He unwrapped it gently, and inside, he found ten waxy colored stars. He took the blue one in his palm and inspected it. “Are these… crayons?”
“Yes,” answered Emi, “handmade.”
“Handmade?”
She nodded. “I learned from Nico that you’ve been struggling a bit with work, so I wanted to help. I thought that coloring could help you relax, but I didn’t want to give you a plain crayon box, you know? That would be lame.” Emi toyed a little with her hands as she went on, “Then Alyn was selling this star silicone mold, and I thought, 'Hey, since Byron likes stars, wouldn’t it be cool to melt some crayons on it?’ I thought, maybe, it would make you smile. I know it’s not as grandiose as your necklace, but—”
Emi was cut short by Byron’s sudden hug. He wrapped his arms around her and hold her tight against him. “Thank you,” he said, “this is the most heartfelt gift someone has ever given to me." Framing her face with both hands, he added, "I promise I’ll treasure them, too.”
Emi’s eyes sparkled with relief and affection. Just as Byron was about to kiss her on the lips, she gasped and pointed to the window. “Look!”
Byron turned his head just in time to catch a shooting star passing by. “Quick, make a wish!” He heard Emi say. When he looked at her again he found her with her eyes closed, deep in concentration. Byron’s eyes narrowed with affection. He took advantage of her position and leaned to kiss her, first gently, then passionately as he seek entrance. Her surprised moan was muffled by his lips.
“Hey! Not fair!” She said, elbowing him, “I’ll get you for that!”
Byron let out a genuine laugh at her expression. “I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist.” His voice dropping an octave, he added, “Is that a promise? Because I’m looking forward to it.”
“Byron!"
Just then, the clock struck twelve. Looking at his beloved, Byron opened his arms for her. Emi sat on his lap and him envelop her in his arms once again. She, too, gave him the biggest squeeze she could.
"Merry Christmas, mein liebling.”
“Merry Christmas… my love.”
*quietly screaming in the background*
@lustfullyleocrawford, @rizosrojizos, you spoil me. ( ;A; ) Thank you for this lovely story! I can’t stop smiling and trying to cover my face (even though there is no one to see me!) Many elements actually resonate with me, perhaps more than you’d expect. Really, I don’t think I can thank you enough for this! ( ;v; )

Eve’s Diary - Entry #84
Date: 26th of November, 2027
Dear Diary,
So the first task happened, and it was completely mad! And some other stuff has happened, as well.
So the first task was beasts! We all walked through the forest to this huge stadium they carved out of the mountain. Not gonna lie, I absolutely hated going up the stairs to get to the top. I love flying, but I hate heights if I’ve only got my feet to rely on. It’s different if I’m on a broom. The stairs were so narrow and rickety, I felt like they were going to break under me, or a breeze would come by and push me off.
So the very first creature we saw was a Snallygaster, which reminded me of a Griffin a little bit? It was this big white bird… dragon… lion thing. It made these really cool noises that I don’t even have words to describe. The Beauxbatons Champion had to face it. She got knocked around the ring a little, but was able to make it to the cave and get whatever the prize was. I think she broke her arm.
Elliott had to face off against something called a Nundu. It looked like a big cat with this like… Fleshy spiky main? And it made the worst sound I’d ever heard in my life, though Ruby thinks the sound was awesome. It was just… the absolute worst scream. It sounded like death. And it nearly killed Elliott, too! We thought it ate his arm, at first, but he’d managed to get his arm away in time. He did get his face clawed up, though. There was a lot of blood. He’s fine now, but he has a pretty nasty scar. And he got his prize too, of course.
And then finally, Durmstrang’s champion faced off against an Occamy, which is this snake… bird thing that grows and shrinks to fit it’s space. It seemed a lot more friendly than the other two creatures, like it was only attacking because Lars was casting spells at it. Anyways, he managed to trap it pretty good before it could grow bigger than the stadium, and was very… show-offish about it, and got his prize. Durmstrang ended up winning that task by 1 point. Elliott had gotten second place.
I talked to Marigold, a bit, and she’d mentioned something about her uncle having a suitcase full of… ‘critters’ which I guess is creatures? I’m not sure if they’re magical or what, I’ll have to ask her. And then Ruby asked me to go to the Yule Ball with him, which will be fun! I have my outfit all fixed up, with my dress from the charity shop, my sweater and snowflake necklace. I can’t wait to see what they do to the great hall. I heard that in past years, they’d done the Nutcracker, and also Narnia, and I’m so jealous that I wasn’t able to see that! I’m really excited.
We had flying class, and the Durmstrang students talked about a tradition they do where they chase the Northern Lights. I’m so jealous of that, too! I remember last year when I kept having dreams about the Northern Lights. I made Ruby promise to chase them with me when we’re older. I have to see them. I also think I’m going to ask for a broom for Christmas.
It was Marigold’s birthday this week, also! I didn’t know, so I gave her her Christmas present early, which was this enchanted dragon plushie that flies around alongside you. I really need to get a calendar so I can keep track of my friend’s birthdays.
Oh, and there was another explosion, when we were celebrating Marigold’s birthday in the great hall. It shook the school, and now there’s something glowing in the forest near Hogsmeade. I heard whisper that some people think it’s something that fell out of the sky? Which would be kind of cool. I wonder what a star looks like.
In Herbology, Dracheblume told us they’ll be putting the Christmas Trees in the Great Hall soon, so she had us forage for stuff to make into ornaments. I found a lot of pinecones and acorns to paint, and Ruby had us look for conkers. He acted really weird and far-away when we were looking for them, though. But then, we hung out in the Great Hall, and talked a lot.
We talked about spending the next summers together, going to concerts and stuff to see The Marrows, The Weird Sisters, The Va-Va-Veelas and some other bands, and he also talked about me coming to stay with him in Bulgaria for a summer, which sounds exciting. I’m happy to talk to him and spend more time with him.
Anyways, that’s about everything, I think. I’m super sleepy, so I’m probably going to go to bed.
Much love, Everly

It’s time to deck the halls! With the holiday season approaching, millions of people want to bring the festive cheer into their homes. Decorating for the holidays is not a new tradition. Even ancient civilizations, such as the Druids or Celts would decorate around this time. As we’ve evolved as a society, our taste for holiday decorations has strayed from nice to naughty in terms of environmental damage.
The holiday season is one of huge environmental concern. Each year, around 25-30 million trees are sold at this time. It’s a archaic tradition that we still practice despite the negative effects in has on our planet. The amount of environmental damage does not stop at just the tree. Wrapping paper, plastic decor, and cheap disposable items are all ways that the holiday season contributes to the influx in negative environmental impact. From Thanksgiving to New Years alone, we as a society generate seven million more pounds of waste.
So instead of aiding in the mass amount of waste, you can decorate with the environment in mind this holiday season. There are a few methods on sustainable decor. Using natural foraged materials is a great idea because these are biodegradable and are naturally recycled back into our ecosystem. Another option is for reusable/repurposed products that prolong the use and save a trip to the landfill.
Looking for inspiration on how to decorate sustainably this holiday? Check out this list of ideas to get you started on your eco holiday season.
Trees

Candle Displays
Dress up your plain white candles by tying some burlap and pine snippings with twine around the base.
Another option to tie around your candle are spices. Cinnamon sticks add some visual interest and smell great. Alternatively, you can switch this for an anise star secured with twine.
Image via Planete Deco
A super easy winter decor trick is to fill a hurricane vase or other glass candle vase with foraged winter flora. Pinecones, holly, pine snippings, or twigs are all wonderful natural elements that are free and fill your home with the festive yule spirit.
Garland
Natural Pine Garland
Craft via The Fresh Exchange
Real garland is biodegradable and fills your home with a nice forest scent. Buy or make your own with this craft from The Fresh Exchange. Just remember to compost your garland when you’re done!
White Felt Acorn Garland
Acorn Garland, $15 via WoollyMemories
These adorable acorns are made from foraged acorn caps, twine, and wool. All are natural and biodegradable materials, and can even work in your fall decor.
Wood Burned Garland
Craft via The Kim Six Fix
This chalkboard painted wood garland is extra savvy because you can switch up the sayings based on the holiday season, keeping this decor practical year round!
Ornaments
Glass Filled Ornaments
Craft via Martha Stewart
Moss Filled Ornaments, $24 via Elizabethan Folk Art
As you can see, there are so many ways to get creative with a simple glass ornament. Fill it with biodegradable twine, natural moss, or holly clippings. It’s a versatile way to decorate your tree to suit your holiday style.
Etched Tree Slices
Craft via Designmom.com
These etched wooden ornaments are a perfect rustic and natural touch for your “yule” tree. Forage for fallen branches to make it an even “greener” decor element.
Cinnamon Scented Ornaments
Craft via Katy Elliott
Have your house smelling of yummy cinnamon with these cinnamon heart ornaments. It’s a fun craft to do, plus you can create your own shapes and designs, customizing your very own ornaments.
