David Feiss, creator of Cow and Chicken

As printed in The Press-Tribune (Roseville, CA) on July 22, 2002:

Feiss portrays emotion through his cartoon characters. "Cow and Chicken," which, although no longer being made is still wildly popular in syndication, came about because Feiss was too tired to read to his daughter one evening. "It started as a bedtime story for my daughter when she was 6," Feiss recalled. "One night I was too tired to turn on the light and pick a book, so I made up the story of Cow and Chicken." He admits to being influenced by Monty Python and Warner Brothers cartoons, although now he says his tastes have changed. "I make cartoons but I don't particularly like to watch them," he said. He started his career with a short animated film he made in high school, which he sent to Hanna Barbera upon graduating. He was 19. And they hired him. After sending his daughter to sleep that night with images of a cow and chicken brother-sister team, Feiss wrote the story down the next morning. Menendez did the drawings, and a classic was born.

"Cow and Chicken are brother and sister," Feiss explained. "They are not adopted, and they have human parents. But the parents don't have tops ― you see only the legs of adults." The cow will always be 7, idolizing her big brother Chicken, 11. Feiss said their relationship is real ― they bicker, but deep down, they really care for each other and can be counted on when trouble arises. The pilot was filmed in 1995, seven minutes, which aired on the Cartoon Channel. There were 48 shorts that the audience voted for, and "Cow and Chicken" came in second "Johnny Bravo was No. 1," Feiss said. It was very popular for the 52 ½ hours of episodes made. "Why do kids like it?" Feiss said. "The difference between the brother and sister. And the stories play like kids' lives ― they go to school, have teachers and friends." With one minor deviation from "reality" ― Cow has an alter ego, he if he's not flying to New York for said Super Cow, who comes out when Chicken is in trouble. "She can fly and speaks only Menendez also spends two or Spanish," Feiss said. "That was Pilar's idea. It ends up being very funny."

Again, if you don't know any better, David Feiss (the creator of Cow and Chicken and I Am Weasel) is the story artist for the Despicable Me franchise, including the recent 4th installment.
