I can’t believe we got an infodump on simple domains AGAIN over a Sukuna backstory.

More complaining under the cut.

Usually I am one to give Gege the benefit of the doubt and will read heavily into what little information we are given. But I can't defend this chapter themes or character wise.

Even if this turns out to be a fakeout, going in painstaking detail over a show-not-tell battle in a way that lacks characterization and heartfelt emotion sucks to read. Even if the new shadow style and simple domain debacle goes somewhere, having it the main focus after an extremely traumatic battle instead of characters processing their emotions sucks to read. Even if Gojo is alive and that's why they're this chipper, everyone ignoring his sacrifice and efforts along with Choso's sucks to read.

I'm happy Yuta and Higuruma are alive but why was their revival off-screened? Yuta was so defensive over Gojo and everyone treating him like an object just 8 chapters ago. What happened to that? Why is everyone treating this battle like it was no big deal? (Also why the fudge did Kusakabe tell Yuji, a 15 year old, to his face he should've been killed while disparaging Gojo for protecting the life of a child???)

After the Shibuya Incident, there was a whole segment dedicated to how this affected the average person. The Culling Games ended and there are still bloodthirsty freaks running around. What happened to them? Is Angel hunting them down and that's why Hana is missing? Infodumping on anything except the battle would've been better.

I doubt we'll get any more info on Sukuna, Kenjaku, and Tengen at this point. We'll be lucky if there's a funeral for even Geto's body. Shoko was absent this entire chapter which makes me thing she's still trying to save Gojo or she's preparing their bodies for a funeral.

Anyways. This is the worst JJK chapter for me hands down. My hopes for the final 2 are mostly dashed. Crunch and poor working conditions really do ruin art my goodness.

There is a very exquisite agony in playing a game you love so so so so so much, and realizing that one of the other players is trying to play a totally different game than you.

I always think about how in multiple episodes it's basically canon that Blanche is bi but considers dating women to be more hassle (which is a whole rabbit hole to go down - does she struggle with societal homophobia when she's with women? Has she only been with fellow high maintenance femmes when shes really after a Dorothy type? Has she internalized the idea that her attraction to women isn't 'real'? Her reaction to Clayton adds to these questions). Not to mention how this goes together with her relationships with the girls; making to kiss Rose that one time (and Rose multiple times seeming very aware of Blanche's proclivities), begging Dorothy for 'relief' and being convinced she's attracted to women too.

Yes, anon! It’s really interesting to delve into Blanche’s psyche about all this stuff!

I started writing down my thoughts and ended up with a long ramble -- allow me to place it all under a cut, so I don't clog up anyone's dash, haha.

Personally, I think she has some strong mental blocks when it comes to her sexuality because of the way she was brought up. I mean, she grew up in Atlanta approx in the 1930s/1940s — I’m sure I don’t have to detail the kind of casual bigotry she must have seen around her during her formative years! Just look at the story she recounts in S1E13 A Little Romance:

“Now, you have to understand that in those days in the South a lot of things were still taboo. Certain people were not to mix. So Benjamin and I had to meet in secret. Oh, we knew if any of the bigots in town found out about us, there’d be a terrible scandal.”

And all of this because Benjamin was a yankee… can you imagine what ‘the bigots in town’ thought about homosexuality? Yeah, I’m pretty sure Blanche learned to suppress that part of herself very early on. We know she turns to denial when she’s faced with uncomfortable truths and emotions she can’t deal with, so I think she likely just refuses to acknowledge that part of herself most of the time, and it only comes out (pun intended!) when she’s not paying much attention to things, or when there’s something more important going on. See the two examples you point out: when she tries to kiss Rose she’s concerned with not being kissed at midnight, and when she propositions Dorothy she’s, well… she’s desperate to get some, if we can be frank.

When she’s in a more rational state, her reactions tend to be more measured… but not by much. She does advise Rose not to date women (S3E10 The Audit):

“Oh, no, honey, don’t do that! No job is worth having to date women!”

But she’s also really flattered at receiving lots and lots of phone calls from women, after her appearance as a ‘lesbian’ on TV (S7E15 Goodbye, Mr Gordon):

“By the way, Dorothy, if I were a lesbian, I sure would be a popular one. Look at this, 20 calls.”

And of course we can’t forget her reaction to finding out that Jean has a crush on Rose in S2E5 Isn’t It Romantic?:

“Jean has the hots for Rose? I don’t believe it, I do not believe it! […] To think Jean would prefer Rose over me? That’s ridiculous! […] Now you tell me the truth: if you had to pick between Rose and me, who would you pick? Who?”

All of these are (likely) intended to be jokes about her vanity and her libertine nature (in the same way as Rose’s observations are), but considering a lot of the writers of this show were queer themselves, it wouldn’t seem strange to me if they were intentionally peppered in to suggest that Blanche might be a bisexual in denial. It certainly fits her character!

I haven’t spoken about her reaction to Clayton’s coming out yet, but that’s immensely interesting too, of course. I think Blanche has the same attitude towards homosexuality that I see in a lot of (mostly older) people in my Country nowadays: it’s fine as a general concept, but when it comes to her family (or, God forbid, herself) then the problems come out. See for example what she says about Jean:

“Well, I’ll never understand what Jean doesn’t see in the opposite sex, but if that makes her happy, that’s fine by me!”

Which isn’t a homophobic attitude at all! If anything, if you take her upbringing into account, it’s pretty accepting. But then, when Clayton comes out to her (S4E9 Scared Straight) and tells her he wants to get married (S6E14 Sister Of The Bride), this is what she says:

“Oh, Clayton, please be serious. You're just saying that so I won't set you up with any more women. […] Well, then you're saying it 'cause you're trying to get back at me for something. Clay, I know you too well for this. After all, I know it can't be true. You're my brother. […] Clayton Hollingsworth. You look me in the face and tell me you really are… what you just said you are.”

“I'm having a little trouble putting this all together. Clayton, I just feel like I don't know you anymore.”

“[…] Dorothy, that's different. We're talking about going out in public. Oh, what are people gonna say?”

“Will you tell me why you want to put yourself and Doug through this? You know how people can be.”

“Oh, look, I can accept the fact that he's gay, but why does he have to slip a ring on this guy's finger so the whole world will know?”

Quite the difference from her attitude towards Jean, wouldn’t you say? I think there’s three elements at play here.

1) When Clayton comes out to Blanche, she feels disoriented because this is life-changing information Clayton has never shared with her before. While her reaction as a whole isn’t ideal, personally I think it’s understandable. Clayton is her baby brother; she’s known him as straight all his life, he’s been married to a woman for years before his divorce, and she recounts an episode from their adolescence when he was on a date with a woman and very clearly implicated having a physical encounter with her. He's done everything in his power to pass as straight until this point in time -- I don't find it strange that Blanche would be shocked at his coming out, especially given her upbringing (and the fact that this is set in the 80s! We can't expect modern sensibilities from the characters!). Once again, her reaction isn't the best (she can't even bring herself to say the word 'gay' at first...), but the shock per se isn't that surprising, imho.

2) Blanche is scared because of societal implications above all. She doesn't necessarily see being queer as something wrong, but she's been taught it's not socially acceptable and acts accordingly. Notice how she's worried about what people are going to say, and she struggles to accept that Clayton wants the whole world to know about his relationship with Doug.

Societal expectations in general are a big theme for Blanche's character, and often drive her development; another big example of this is her attitude towards Rebecca's decision to get artificially inseminated, but it's a bit of a baseline issue for her, I feel. She has this whole thing about her beauty and her (supposed) youth and her attractiveness that has some inherent elements, but it's mostly an issue of how other people perceive her, I think, and her response to her brother's coming out is easy to relate to this theme. I mean, she even says it to Rose in S7E15:

"Well, I don't mind being labeled a lesbian, honey, but since I'm not, you just ruined my social life."

So yeah. I think it's safe to say her main concern is societal disapproval of queerness: she wants to be accepted and celebrated by the people around her, and she thinks that being openly queer will destroy her place in her social circle (and she's worried about the same happening to Clayton too, of course).

3) This is sort of related to point 2, but it felt distinct enough to treat it separately. I think she might have reacted so badly to Clayton's coming out (and especially to his showing up with a partner) because he's open about his sexuality, and she's not ready to face what that means for her. My lovely mutual @\hecatesbroom recently published her latest amazing work the odd one(s) out, on the relationship between Dorothy and her brother Phil and how Phil's open queerness might have impacted Dorothy; I think a similar situation might have occurred between Blanche and Clayton after his coming out.

Blanche has a sort of advantage on Dorothy because of her bisexuality, in the sense that she has 'passing privilege' (I really dislike this concept, but allow me to use it to make a point): it's painfully clear that she loved her late husband with all her heart, and she's obviously attracted to men as well, so she can pretend not to like women without too much of a hassle (whereas, if you believe Dorothy to be a repressed lesbian, her situation is much more complicated).

The issue with this is that this 'advantage' is a double-edged sword: she might have the comfort of being socially acceptable, but she's had to suffocate a big part of herself to obtain that comfort. And so, what happens when Clayton -- her baby brother Clayton, the one who's always been just like her, who's grown up with her same environment and influences -- begins openly living as a gay man? I'm sure the situation must have had a strong impact on her, even if just on a subconscious level; I've always found it curious that she seems to have a harder time accepting Clayton in S6E14 than she does in S4E9 (she even calls his sexuality a phase), and while a part of it may be attributed to the higher social exposure Clayton's commitment to Doug brings, I think this may be a result of her inner conflict, provoked by watching her brother live openly while she's been suppressing a part of herself all her life.

Here I'm assuming she's never acted upon her attraction to women before, but there's some space to believe she has done so and has decided it's too much of a hassle, as you say -- likely because she'd for sure do it in secret, given her fear of societal condemnation. If she has been with women before, and decided to give up on it, I still think she'd be greatly impacted by Clayton's coming out: it means her baby brother is a) braver than she is, and b) going to openly face (and likely suffer because of) the same social issues she's run away from. In this lens, I find it interesting that she cautions him about how people can be, almost as if they've both experienced it.

Whew. Wow, this was a lot more than I'd originally meant to write, haha! Seems you sparked a big train of thought, anon! I think all of the Girls (with the possible exception of Sophia) are really fascinating to analyze with a queer lens, and Blanche is always interesting to me, of course. As a final note, I'd like to point out that she does come around to Clayton's sexuality and his relationship, in the end: as often happens, she just needs the Girls' help to put things back in perspective, understand she's hurting someone she loves, and correct her actions. I'd like to think living with the Girls might lead to her becoming more accepting of herself, too.

I feel like I liked yakuza 5 a lot more than most people for some reason

#like a lot of people seem to not like it or think it’s mid #idk man but it was one of the games I enjoyed most and I really liked the range of characters you get to play #love me a murder mystery too #idk I think people seem to not like how disjointed the plot is at first and trying to keep up with everyone’s seperate plot and characters #and etc. but I personally really liked how it was all disjointed and the further you get into the game / the more characters you play the #more shit starts coming together and forming a full picture #like don’t get me wrong it’s not perfect and I do have qualms with some. choices. (mostly having to do with majima and #mirei) but overall it’s one of the games I’ve enjoyed the most and that’s kept me interested in the plot the most #fantastic to get a more in-depth look at haruka and to get to really know her by playing her and seeing how she interacts with people and #choices she makes and etc. I don’t think she was a fully fleshed out character prior to that #loved her with all my heart already don’t get me wrong but she just didn’t have much time on screen especially as a teenager to fully get #her personality across and some of the issues she deals with (mommy issues. abandonment issues #etc).#and her and uncle akiyama are a very nice unexpected duo!!!#the different settings were fun too. overall I think the whole thing just felt like more of a streamlined story in a way with drastically #different viewpoints depending on the character #also shinada’s a gift. bless him #daigo feels three dimensional and emotionally present in a way I didn’t see much in other games- even when he’s literally a boss in 4. tbh #the only other time I think he feels really solid as a character is in fuckin dead souls. I think it’s cause it’s SO rare to see daigo in #non-serious situations or vulnerable with people on purpose. dead souls has the first thing and y5 has a bit of both #and I could complain more about how y6 SHOULD have made daigo more present instead of sending him to fuckin jail the whole time but. I do #get that that was kind of important to the plot. So, a while back I posted a pic of all the Pokemon dudes that I like despite knowing basically nothing about Pokemon, and it's become a very shocking fact to me that despite their apparent popularity, the train dudes do basically nothing in their home game.

#how do i know they do nothing if i don't play pokemon?#because i looked through a playilst of an old chugg/a/conroy LP and they weren't in a single thumbnail for that series #that dude covers EVERYTHING in a series. if they were important they would have been there #i guess side characters are capable of getting large fan bases for basically no reason #but i find it very odd regardless #is it a fun mode?#is there a different piece of media that led to their popularity?#because i have minimal interest in pokemon as a series outside of character/creature design #i don't mind looking up spoilers for it #so i know that ingo in particular got a boost after arceus for *Reasons*#and the inherent tragedy of that story was sure to increase the fans of both #but why the heck were they popular before that?#because them being on my personal list is because #i was bombarded with fanart about them for like 2 months so i was basically suckered into caring about them #anyway. i don't think i'm gonna go through the trouble of updating that graphic #but these are the new pokedudes that would be added to it:#gordie. as per forgetting him the first time.#the principal of the school and his alter ego #the dark type leader of team star #the biology. art. and cooking teacher #larry.#and the professor from pokemon sleep #for the record there are pokegals that i like too but that list is much shorter than thus much less interesting #it's hard for me to get into anime girls because i always feel like they're trying to sell me something #and i'm usually not buying

so if you romance and ascend astarion you can kick him in the balls when he tries to turn you and it’s just very funny, he’s so pissy about it. so much for the most powerful vampire of all time or whatever, he stamps around like a toddler and then leaves forever

#i’m glad i saved before that choice so i can go through all the scenes i wouldn’t have got otherwise #(‘that choice’ meaning ascension)#im Fascinated by a whole bunch of stuff if you ascend him #like if you succeed on the detect thoughts (or maybe insight i forget) before he turns you to see what he think of you #it says something like ‘he will always see you as degrading yourself while you choose to be with him’ which is just BONKERS INSANE #like not confusing or anything. just wild to include. in a good way; like yeah of course that’s how he feels #and then the narrator follows it up with something like ‘but isn’t that what you want?’#like i’m glad they do actually try to impress upon you how fucked this dynamic is. they’re not trying to make you think it’s a good outcome #(i know there’s discourse about this and it’s very annoying)#(people who are like ‘actually it’s romantic and kinky’ uhh 😬)#(but then people who are like ‘how can anyone think this is ok’ and direct that towards anyone who enjoys playing it)#(like no it’s fun and genuinely interesting and i can see the appeal. just not when it comes to analysing the relationship)#(most people are aware that this is a bad dynamic they’re just playing a game chill out)#(like when i said 😬 about it being romantic/kinky i mean that from the perspective of analysing the story not personal enjoyment)#(anyway. moving on)#like i did that specific bit of dialogue probably a month or more ago and only once (because the test was really hard)#and it’s been creeping around in my head ever since. i love it lmao #i saw a video of that kiss where he makes you kneel a while ago and didn’t quite believe it was a real thing #but no it’s one of his actual default kisses. amazing #like i’m definitely gonna do a playthrough where i get everyone to make the power-hungry soul-destroying choices #and i might have to romance astarion again for that one because he definitely seems to have the most bad-decision relationship content #although he has the most relationship content full stop so it’s not surprising #but i think that’s the only one that notably changes your character during the playthrough rather than just the epilogue #personal #ash plays bg3

I rlly liked red hood the hill bc besides the gift it completely ignored everything else with the batfam which to meeee I’m taking it as the hill has been overlooked by the bats forever (see Orpheus rising) so yeah nobody there gives a fuck about those people and jason knows better than to bring that shit over there

#do not get me wrong i think the game is fun to play and that was like 80% of where my concern lied #but godddd the story sucks so bad. i love the draconification bit with zelda but the rest. augh #why do we need Another ancient civilization literally appearing out of nowhere and infesting hyrule with its ruins #they got rid of all the sheikah stuff with literally no explanation to shove the zonai into the region #but why are we even focusing on the ancient civilizations again????#it would have made so much more sense to focus on hyrule in the present day. work with the npcs to make hyrule greater than it was #move on from the calamity and turn hyrule into a strong bustling country #the zonai were hinted at in botw but they feel so shoehorned in because they have nothing to do with anything in botw #i dont care about the secret stones we had champion abilities #i dont care about the sages the champion descendants had the champions to look up to #i dont care about rauru and sonia because sonia got fridged hard and rauru's character is flat. pleasant but flat #and i dont care at all about ganondorf because the most interesting thing he ever does is do the gmod face #its so frustrating watching the same 'woah secret stones! sages??' cutscene 4 times with Da New Sages and its so frustrating #watching the other characters speculate what happened to zelda and chase down her ghostly paper trail #when like. i can see her in the sky. she's over there guys #the memories were one of my favorite things in botw bc they all subtly stitched together the story of what happened #in totk they are incredibly plot dense and very linear and very confusing to watch out of order. which is easy to do #the one where sonia gets murked is like. the third memory i found #id at least be more interested in all the zonai stuff if link was the one to get teleported to the past while zelda has to try and save him #giving zelda agency. craziest thing they could have done #ok sorry this is a Lot of salt but just. raaaaagh #maybe my expectations were astronomical but outside of gameplay totk brings nothing good to the table imo #i'd significantly rather they made botw2 more gameplay focused where you can do something like make meaningful changes to the map #tarrey town style #than try to shove a whole different zelda game's plot into a carefully constructed preexisting world #i think the zonai story would be cool in its own game but not botw

coming out of my baldurs gate 3 delirium (aka i am working a night shift and can't physically play it. at work.) to say that horikoshi. horikoshi when i GET YOU. you are NOT leaving izuku with no quirk and no arms. i am in your walls

#rat rambles #stars posting #I just want to get to act 4 alreadyyyyyy #I have. plans.#and while I know theres more stuff I can do rn in act 3 I would rather save most of it for later #anyways. time to hope I saved before starting the family quests #odile saw I was trying to speedrun everyone's dialogue and said nuh uh try again #also Im glad I got the coin scene like the absolute millisecond act 3 started I was worried Id have to sit around for forever #speaking of the coin I got a fun glitch with it earlier #I was near the favor tree and got the coin dialogue where a glitch rewind effect happens #and the tree jumpscared the hell out of me by suddenly getting stretched out and huge covering most of the screen #I had to walk out and back into the are to fix it it covered like half the area #it genuinely slightly scared me for the split second that it wasnt obviously a glitch lol #gotta love the universe breaking itself to try to keep itself together #one thing that did surprise me is just how much optional content I've never seen before there is #I knew there was stuff that most ppl who play the game dont ever see but I guess I forgot most ppl dont obsessively shove their faces into #walls until smth happens #love making my sif grapple with his lost past the absolute millisecond I am allowed to every time a new scene is opened up to me #the lost contry scenes are all easily my favorite scenes in the game and its honestly not even close #theyre both very important to me and also just incredibly well written and interesting #its low key what boosted sif from being a character I have a complicated relationship with to character I adore #to be clear the complicated stuff is all in the rest of the self recognition I face when I see him spiral #you see jackie is recognition through the other (derogatory) but like in a god damnit you have adhd dont you sorta way #while sif is more like. hoo boy. uh oh.#which is ironic because jackie is the one of the two whos actually a terrible person lol #you see I like picking her apart while with sif it feels like theyre picking me apart which is significantly more uncomfortable #I forgives them I just need to not think abt them for too long at any given time or I start feeling depressed lol

finally got kazuha in the alt. i forgot it was july already so the stardust shop reset. probably wouldn't have made it otherwise. he came home at exactly 75 pity
