An insanely photorealistic charcoal drawing of Frank Discussion of The Feederz by DeviantArt user @Lysisrata from a b/w photo.
Frank Discussion has been a punk provocateur, a saboteur & and an agitator in Phoenix, Arizona, since the late-'70s, putting on art assaults with various lineups of The Feederz, testing the limits of free speech and art that included subversing lyrics, throwning dead animals or firing blanks from an AR-15 rifle into the audience, performing with live cockroaches glued to his head or releasing an album in a sandpaper cover to destroy everything it came into contact with as 'the product to destroy all other products' and pushing an unpopular to some political agenda of disruption and sedition against any authority figures or institutions through rioting and looting -or running off with Jello Biafra's wife after hiding at their place in San Francisco for over a year to avoid arrest back in the day.
"…in 1979 when I was called for jury duty. During the jury picking, after lunch, suddenly there was a lot of extra cops in the courtroom. The judge stopped everything and said he wanted to ask questions of "Mr. Frank Discussion." "It's been brought to my attention that in an article in the New Times paper, you advocated the overthrow of the government. Is that true? "I replied "yes" of course."Do you advocate the overthrow of the government?" "Yes." "Do you advocate the violent overthrow of the government?" I responded, "Not necessarily. You could always surrender." Frank Discussion

Class — Epoca de Los Vaqueros (Feel It)
Tumblr media
Epoca de Los Vaqueros by CLASS
Tucson-based Class is back with the band’s second record in five months, Epoca de Los Vaqueros. This new mini-LP is much in the same mode as the excellent self-titled EP Class circulated over the summer: tunes that snap and toggle between power pop and glammed-up punk, lyrics that snap even harder, sort of smart-assed, sort of erudite and always engaging. But Tucson? It’s tough to match this music to those dry desert climes, full of hot, white sand and sour white people. “Light Switch Tripper” will put you in mind of Rodney on the ROQ’s LA, skinny kids in eyeliner and dayglo poly shirts waiting for Bowie to show up in a dress; “Crowded Room” sounds like it must have been recorded in a dark, dank alley midway between Max’s Kansas City and Terry Ork’s apartment. Tucson?
Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised. Back during Reagan’s ascent, Arizona’s weirdo subculture produced Mighty Sphincter, Meat Puppets and the Feederz. Class doesn’t have the unhinged sensibility or incisiveness of those earlier bands. The punk energies of Epoca de Los Vaqueros are less arch and enraged, more interested in the pleasures encountered in explorations of American undersides and night worlds. But Class can craft a sharp, critically minded passage, as well. In the chorus of “Box My Own Shadow,” the band sings, “It’s the truth as only I can say / Hear it echo in a half-abandoned mall.” There’s a lot in there: the sign of economic downturn; that moribund architectural space as the proper site for the pronouncement of (an also moribund?) truth; the suggestion of isolation, as if the lyric speaker’s utterance has no audience.
It's an open question if these songs will have a large audience, or if they even want one. Gerard Cosloy seems to be a fan; he blurbs Epoca de Los Vaqueros on Feel It’s Bandcamp. Cosloy was a powerful tastemaker, at Homestead in the 1980s and then at Matador, where he essentially soundtracked the 90s’ indie turn and its ambiguous relations to hipsterdom. The dudes in Class — with their big mustaches and their gleaming white hip huggers — may have even more complex relation to hipster poses. The music seems to have other ideas. “Light Switch Tripper” is full of glammy excess, but it aims straight for the heart. It’s a great tune, riding high on its hooks and ebullient chorus. Is it serious? Does it matter? When the room goes dark, no one can see you wink.
