Oleg Yankovskiy in Nostalghia (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1983)
Cast: Oleg Yankovskiy, Erland Josephson, Domiziana Giordana, Patrizia Terreno, Laura De Marchi, Delia Boccardo, Milena Vukotic. Screenplay: Andrei Tarkovsky, Tonino Guerra. Cinematography:  Giuseppe Lanci. Production design: Andrea Crisanti. Film editing: Erminia Marani, Amedeo Salfa.  For the last film of his life, The Sacrifice (1986), Andrei Tarkovsky, self-exiled from the Soviet Union, would venture into Sweden with the help of Ingmar Bergman's cinematographer, Sven Nykvist, and he made his first film outside of Russia in Italy with the help of co-screenwriter Tonino Guerra, who had written screenplays for Michelangelo Antonioni and Federico Fellini. Just as Bergman is a spiritual presence in The Sacrifice, so are Antonioni and Fellini in Nostalghia. But mostly it's Tarkovsky's deracination that shows in both films, especially in Nostalghia, in which he imports a damp Russian climate into the Mediterranean atmosphere of Italy. I find Nostalghia more accessible or more satisfying -- if such words could ever be adequate to one's experience of Tarkovsky -- than The Sacrifice because Tarkovsky doesn't take on anything so enormous as nuclear holocaust in Nostalghia. In its bare essence, Nostalghia is the story of a Russian poet, Andrei Gorchakov (Oleg Yankovskiy), in Italy to write the biography of an 18th-century Russian composer, who finds himself sinking deeper into depression until he encounters a madman named Domenico (Erland Josephson) who allows Andrei a moment of transcendence. Nostalghia is a film about fire and water. Domenico, who lives in a leaky ruin into which the rain continually drips, believes that he can save the world if he carries a lighted candle through the waters of the spa at Bagno Vignoni. The authorities, however, continually prevent him from even attempting the task. Eventually, Domenico becomes a mad prophet, preaching to a scattered audience of followers before he douses himself with gasoline and sets himself on fire. Andrei then sets out to complete Domenico's task, walking across the pool -- which has, however, been drained for a periodic cleaning -- with the candle and then collapsing. Tarkovsky films this scene in a single long take, during which the wind blows out Andrei's candle twice, forcing him to restart the task, before he finally accomplishes it. This is film as poetry, the product of a singular, remarkable sensibility, and it probably should be judged more by the standards we apply to poetry than by those we apply to narrative film. Tarkovsky was one of the last romantics, still willing to ascribe virtue to enthusiasm, to find wisdom in madness, to rail against our alienation from nature as profoundly as Wordsworth or Shelley or Blake ever did.

Original Perdido Jazz Band :favolosa e storica dixieland band veronese
Padova Jazz Club, Original Perdido Jazz Band
 Mar.18, 2010

October 15, 2020: King Felipe, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía visited the facilities of the “LAFPABRICA. Awards Factory” in Oviedo, Asturias. There, at the La Vega Arms Factory, they develop - throughout the week - a program of cultural activities organized by the Princess of Asturias Foundation on the occasion of the fortieth edition of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Awards.
They toured the Warehouse which houses the "Carlos Sainz Workshop" and the digital photography exhibition “Beyond vocation. Portraits of a pandemic ”. They also attended a virtual round table in which the recipients of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research individually reviewed their work and lines of research. Next, Don Felipe and Doña Letizia, the Princess of Asturias and the Infanta Doña Sofía, visited the audiovisual artistic installation “Morricone Suite”, based on the music of Ennio Morricone and the representative iconography of the films for which it was composed. The tour continued through another of the artistic installations: the "Liquid Library" in homage to literature, thought and ideas.
They also held a meeting at the Nave Taller with artists, the musician and director of “Isla Locura: Cervantes y Shakespeare”, Aaron Zapico; the stage director of “La Belleza del Marido”, Francisco Pardo; the visual artist of “La Belleza del Marido”, Cristina Busto; the member of the Enol Ensemble Morricone and Williams de Cámara, Cristina Gestido; the jazz musician, director of the Williams Club project, Jacobo de Miguel; and the rock musician, director of the Morricone Pop project, Miguel Herrero. After this meeting, “Main Title” from the movie “Star Wars” and another piece from the film “Cinema Paradiso” were performed, by Enol Ensemble.
Finally, they visited in the Nave Artes y Oficios Federico Granell's sculpture installation, "Solid White", a work made in adaptations based on poems by Anne Carson.
Their Majesties the Kings and Their Royal Highnesses were accompanied by the President of the Principality of Asturias, Adrián Barbón; the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska Gómez; the president of the General Meeting of the Principality of Asturias, Marcelino Marcos; the delegate of the Government in the Autonomous Community of the Principality of Asturias, Delia Losa; the mayor of Oviedo, Alfredo Canteli; the president of the Princess of Asturias Foundation, Luis Fernández-Vega; the director of the Princess of Asturias Foundation, Teresa Sanjurjo; Secretary General of the Princess of Asturias Foundation, Adolfo Menéndez; director emeritus for life of the Princess of Asturias Foundation, Graciano García; and the delegate of Defense in Asturias, Juan Luis González.
This program, which is called “Awards Week”, is made up of 29 cultural events, some of them with several sessions. This year, due to the mobility restrictions imposed by COVID-19, the participation of the recipients of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Awards is limited.
The vast majority of face-to-face events take place, again, in the old La Vega Arms Factory, in Oviedo. For its part, the virtual programming includes encounters, poetic recitals and games of a fun and informative nature in new formats adapted to the reality of our days.
In the permanent facilities of “LAFPABRICA. Awards Factory” events are held throughout the week:
"Morricone's Suite": The Italian artist Rino Stefano Tagliafierro and his company, Karmachina, have conceived a unique conceptual journey through the work of Ennio Morricone. From the fusion of some of the composer's most famous musical pieces with representative iconography of the films in which they were included as a soundtrack, they have created an audiovisual show that will captivate the visitor.    "The liquid library": Audiovisual artistic installation tribute to literature, thought and ideas. Created on the occasion of the awarding of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities at the Guadalajara International Book Fair and the Hay Festival of Literature & Arts, this avant-garde space aims to be an invitation to reflection on the intangibility of knowledge and the dematerialization of the book as a medium.    "Carlos Sainz Workshop": Exhibition of some of the vehicles with which Carlos Sainz, 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, has achieved his success.    “Solid white”: In this multidisciplinary space of lyrical evocation, the artist Federico Granell adapts his sculptural works to the poems of Anne Carson, 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Letters, and creates a dialogue between the two arts.    Screening of "Beyond the vocation. Portraits of a pandemic". Digital adaptation of the photographic exhibition that pays tribute to the Spanish health workers who work on the front line against COVID-19.    "Gavi and the trip of a vaccine": Permanent installation in which the visitor will be able to know the path that a vaccine travels from the moment it is available for distribution until it is administered to the child population that needs it. The exhibition also explains the innovative solutions that Gavi, 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, has been applying in this process, as well as the objectives of the alliance for the next five-year period.
The “Awards Week” began on Thursday, October 8 with the inauguration of the permanent installations and the musical poetic show “Isla Locura: Cervantes y Shakespeare” at LAFPABRICA.
This cycle of events has the institutional collaboration of the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Principality of Asturias, the General Board of the Principality of Asturias and the town councils of Oviedo and Gijón. In addition, in collaboration with the Banco Sabadell Foundation, a photographic exhibition has been organized in homage to the health workers who work on the front line against COVID-19.

It’s True Ay, the pain it costs me to love you as I love you!
For love of you, the air, it hurts, and my heart, and my hat, they hurt me.
Who would buy it from me, this ribbon I am holding, and this sadness of cotton, white, for making handkerchiefs with?
Ay, the pain it costs me to love you as I love you!

Lorca/Dali: I Sing the Ode Poetic
Tumblr media
English version
* * *
* * *
* * *
* * *

Ode to Federico García Lorca Pablo Neruda
If I could cry out of fear in a lonely house, if I could take out my eyes and eat them, I would do it for your mournful orange tree voice and for your poetry that comes out screaming.
Because for you they paint the hospitals blue, and the schools and seaside barrios swell and are populated with the feathers of injured angels and are covered with the scales of bridal fish, and the sea urchins are taking to the sky: for you the tailor’s shops with their black membranes filled with blood and spoons, and they swallow torn ribbons, and they murder with kisses, and they dress in white.
When you fly away dressed as a peach, when you laugh the laugh of hurricane-thrown rice, when you sing you make teeth and arteries tremble, throat and fingers, I would die for the dulcet thing that you are, I would die for the red lakes where you live in the middle of autumn with a fallen steed and a blood-soaked God, I would die for the cemeteries that pass by like ashen rivers with water and tombs, at night, amongst muffled bells: rivers thick as bedrooms of ill soldiers, who suddenly swell toward death in rivers with marble numbers and decaying garlands, and funeral oils: I could die from seeing you at night gazing past the piled-high crosses, standing crying, because before the river of death you cry abandonedly, injuredly, you cry crying, with eyes full of tears, of tears, of tears.
If I could at night, hopelessly alone, amass oblivion and shadow and smoke above railroads and steamboats, with a black funnel, chewing the ashes, I would make the tree in which you grow, the nests of golden water that you gather, and the vine that covers your bones communicating the secret of the night.
Cities that smell of wet onion wait for you to pass by singing hoarsely, and silent ships of semen pursue you, and green swallows nest in your hair, and seashells and weekdays, too, furled masts and cherries definitively spin when your pale head of fifteen eyes and your mouth immersed in blood appear.
If I could fill the city halls with soot, and, sobbing, tear down clocks, I would be there to see when summer comes at your house with broken lips, here comes a crowd of people in death suits, here come regions of sad splendor, here come plowed dead poppies, here come gravediggers and riders, here come planets and maps with blood, here come divers covered with ash, here come masked men dragging maidens held against large knives, here come roots, veins, hospitals, springs, ants, here comes the night with the bed where a solitary hussar is dying among the spider lamps, here comes a rose of hatred and pins, here comes a yellowish embarkation, here comes a windy day with a child, here I come with Oliverio, Norah, Vicente Aleixandre, Delia, Maruca, Malva Marina, María Luisa and Larco, la Rubia, Rafael Ugarte, Cotapos, Rafael Alberti, Carlos, Bebé, Manuel Altolaguirre, Molinari, Rosales, Concha Méndez, and others I’m forgetting. They see that you are crowned, young man of health and butterfly, pure young man like a black flash of lightning perpetually free, conversing among us, now, when no one is between the rocks, let’s simply talk about how you and I are: what do verses serve if not the dew?
What do verses serve if not for this night in which a bitter dagger finds us, for this day, for this twilight, for this broken corner where the battered heart of man prepares to die?
Especially at night, at night there are many stars, all within a river like a ribbon next to the windows of the houses full of poor people.
Someone has been killed, perhaps they have lost their jobs in the offices, in the hospitals, in the elevators, in the mines, the stubbornly wounded beings suffer, and there is purpose and weeping everywhere: while the stars run in an endless river there is profuse weeping in the windows, the doorsteps are worn from the weeping, the bedrooms are wet from the weeping that comes in form of a wave to eat away the carpets.
Federico, you see the world, the streets, the vinegar, the farewells at the stations when the smoke raises its decisive wheels toward where there is nothing but some separations, stones, tracks.
There are so many people asking questions everywhere. There is the bleeding blind man, and the irate, and the downhearted, and the miserable, the tree of fingernails, the bandit with envy on his back.
Thus it is life, Federico, here you have the things that my friendship can offer you from a melancholic, manly man. Already you know many things for yourself. And you will know others slowly.
