These Are Not The Internet Results You Are Looking For...
Tumblr media
In our minds, the Internet is the true open marketplace for ideas. In this place, we can gather news information about the world around us, while also holding the capacity to order your groceries directly to your doorstep. But have you ever wondered, is the Internet ~actually~ free? Or thought, “Why is Instagram showing me ads for a product I searched on a completely different platform? To answer your questions using the wise and alarming words of Admiral Ackbar in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, “It’s a Trap!”
Author and professor Matthew Hindman echoes a similar warning about the Internet in his book, The Internet Trap: How the Digitial Economy Builds Monopolies and Undermines Democracy, by uncovering the truth behind the real uses of the Internet. Hindman proclaims that the Internet is not as open and democratic as we believe it. Instead, it is controlled by a small handful of large corporations looking to generate as much monopolized internet distribution as possible. For example, Facebook boosts the exposure of your content only if you are willing to pay for it. The most notorious of this bunch is Google, which Hindman hones in on a great deal in relation to how large corporations monopolize and monetize users’ attention and interactions online.
Hindman states one of his leading principles for this book early on, “Digital survival depends on stickiness--firms’ ability to attract users, to get them to stay longer, and to make them return again and again (Hindman, 2018).” A major way companies can establish this “stickiness” is through personalization. The central theme of this book is understanding how the internet’s form gives rise to concentrations of power. Hindman sees personalization as a “...key tool for ensuring that a site maintains its web traffic (Hindman, 2018).” People want to use applications and systems that they can tailor and personalize to their needs and linking. Most of the time, the larger scale companies are more utilized than the smaller guys. For example, I decided to use Tumblr, a larger-scale social media platform, to create my blog post for class. Mainly because I was familiar with the structure and layout of the platform, but also because I could customize and tailor my profile more quickly than smaller-scale blogging outlets.
A major issue I see, and apparent that Hindman sees it as well, is the more personalization there is leads to more specific and complex algorithms. Hindman indicates that the internet “consistently favors those who have scale on their side.” Users with more followers and content engagement will typically perform better on social media because the algorithm prioritizes it. Think about if Kim Kardashian posted a picture of a blank piece of paper versus if I were to post the exact same picture at the exact same time. Who will have the most exposure and attention?? Well, that’s obvious, Ms. Kim K duh! That’s because the internet algorithm places her content above others because they know it will surely perform well and deliver greater economic value. Similar to if you google for a specific shirt you are shopping for online. If you simply enter what you are looking for into google, it will show you shirts from large-scale companies like gap or target instead of your local boutique down the road.
So coming full circle back to the original warning of Admiral Ackbar, the internet is just one large trap to suck users into supporting the bigger corporations and letting the smaller guys nearly fend for themselves.

Tarnów (part one)
Short story and Town Hall
So this is my hometown. It's placed in the south of Poland in a region known as Małopolska (literall translation: Lesserpoland). It has been created in 1330 by a king Władysław Łokietek. There are two theories about the name of this place.
Theory 1: It has been named after a berry bush growing in the region of the old castle ruins(I will talk about it later)
Theory 2: It has been named after Jan Tarnowski (a really important person for Tarnów).
We have ruins of a castle that stands on a ST.Matin's Hill. The castle belonged to a Tarnowski family,it first has been completed in 1331 and stood for many centuries. The castle had its heyday during the reign of hetman Jan Tarnowski who adapted it into a Renaissance-style palace in the 16th century. However, after the hetman's son died childless in 1567 - a mere six years after his own death - the castle began to fall into disrepair and was abandoned by 1723.
Tarnów during World War II:
Before World War II, about 25,000 Jews lived in Tarnow, a city in southern Poland, 45 miles east of Kraków (Cracow). Jews—whose recorded presence in the town went back to the mid-fifteenth century—comprised about half of the town's total population. A large portion of Jewish business in Tarnow was devoted to garment and hat manufacturing. The Jewish community was ideologically diverse and included both religious Hasidim and secular Zionists.Immediately following the German occupation of the city on September 8, 1939, the harassment of the Jews began. German units burned down most of the city's synagogues on September 9 and drafted Jews for forced-labor projects. Tarnow was incorporated into the Generalgouvernement (the territory in the interior of occupied Poland). Many Tarnow Jews fled to the east, while a large influx of refugees from elsewhere in Poland continued to increase the town's Jewish population. In early November, the Germans ordered the establishment of a Jewish council (Judenrat) to transmit orders and regulations to the Jewish community. Among the duties of the Jewish council were enforcement of special taxation on the community and providing workers for forced labor.
During 1941, life for the Jews of Tarnow became increasingly precarious. The Germans imposed a large collective fine on the community. Jews were required to hand in their valuables. Roundups for labor became more frequent and killings became more commonplace and arbitrary. Deportations from Tarnow began in June 1942, when about 13,500 Jews were sent to the Belzec killing center. During the deportation operations, German SS and police forces massacred hundreds of Jews in the streets, in the marketplace, in the Jewish cemetery, and in the woods outside the town. After the June deportations, the Germans ordered the surviving Jews in Tarnow, along with thousands of Jews from neighboring towns, into a ghetto. The ghetto was surrounded by a high wooden fence. Living conditions in the ghetto were poor, marked by severe food shortages, a lack of sanitary facilities, and a forced-labor regimen in factories and workshops producing goods for the German war industry.
In September 1942, the Germans ordered all ghetto residents to report at Targowica Square, where they were subjected to a Selektion (selection) in which those deemed "unessential" were selected out for deportation to the Belzec killing center. About 8,000 people were deported. Thereafter, deportations from Tarnow to killing centers continued sporadically; the Germans deported a group of 2,500 in November 1942.In the midst of the 1942 deportations, some Jews in Tarnow organized a resistance movement. Many of the resistance leaders were young Zionists involved in the Ha-Shomer Ha-Tsa'ir youth movement. Many of those who left the ghetto to join the partisans fighting in the forests later fell in battle with SS units. Other resisters sought to establish escape routes to Hungary, but with limited success.
The Germans decided to destroy the Tarnow ghetto in September 1943. The surviving 10,000 Jews were deported, 7,000 of them to Auschwitz and 3,000 to the Plaszow concentration camp in Krakow. In late 1943, Tarnow was declared "free of Jews" (judenrein). By the end of the war, the overwhelming majority of Tarnow Jews had been murdered by the Germans. Although some 700 Jews returned to the city after liberation, virtually all of them soon left to escape local antisemitism.
Let's talk about some places here
•Town Hall
Tumblr media
From the beginning of its existence until 1931 when it was allocated for museum purposes, the Town Hall was a building where town officials were residing. Built at the turn of the 16th century as a Gothic, brick building, it was altered in the 70s of the 16th century and gained a Renaissance look. This simple, cubic building was then crowned with a high, brick wall of an attic, behind which there was the so called butterfly roof. This attic was decorated with 28 blind windows, in which there were portrays of town owners from the Tarnowski family. The most decorative element of the attic – the top was decorated with pinnacles and mascarons combined with double volutes. On the first floor, the Council’s Room was expanded and decorated with neo-Renaissance stucco which gave it an elegant character. The entrance to this Room is decorated with a Renaissance portal, the header of which bears the following inscription: JUSTITIAE FUNDAMENTUM FIDES – THE FOUNDATION OF JUSTICE IS FAITH.
During the restoration of this building in 1962-1968 carried out by J. E. Dutkiewicz, on the walls in the Commoners Room (pl. Sala Pospólstwa), fragments of polychromy dating back to the 18th century were found, modelled on the illustrations in the work of F. Pona “Cordiomorphoseos sive ex corde desumpta emblemata sacra” of 1645. This Italian original was used here in order to present the civic values of the town council.
The tower – Gothic-Renaissance structure which is 28 m high. On its top, there is a porch which used to be the place for the fire guards who were to raise the alarm if there was a fire. Initially, the dome of the tower was crowned with the town’s coat of arms – Leliwa. It was replaced with the Pogoń coat of arms, visible till this day, the coat of arms of the Sanguszko Dukes, the heirs of Tarnów since the 18th century. At noon, there is a trumpet call played on this tower, composed by Stanisław Rzepecki in 1972. One of tourist attractions is the possibility of entering the tower and admiring the view of Tarnów.
The clock. The oldest information about the existence of this tower clock dates back to the beginning of the 16th century, it was destroyed during the fire in 1663. The parts remaining after this clock are two clock bells that are currently exhibited in the Commoners Room. This destroyed clock was replaced with a new one that operates until today and is one of the oldest operating tower clocks in Małopolska.
Fun fact: Tarnów is know as the Pearl of Renaissance
