"Oh Jesus, Col's comin' and she's got an armful of papers and that..that.." Cage tapered off as he shifted upright in his engineer's seat at the mixing board.
"She looks like she's the cat that got the cream..."
"Fucking christ I know she was up all night last night."
'So do I but for entirely different reasons.' the drummer of the quartette had thought to himself as he busied himself clicking a rhythm in his head out onto his knee. Jerry Withers was a quiet man who kept good time in the studio and very much to himself when out on tour.
"I wonder who she's seeing these days to put a smile on her face like that."
'Drummer's keep better time, asshole.'
A whirl and a jangle and in Colleen bustled glowing brighter than any of her bandmates had ever seen. That same shine had dulled after they had lost Charlie but here it was all over again. The drab earth tones she'd taken to wearing the last four years had been replaced back with the rich jewel tones and the heady scent of weed mingled with the orange blossom, amber and vanilla of her perfume. It made Whip smile softly to himself as he woken up to find that she'd curled herself around him just enough for the scent to linger on his skin. Sully he noted just scowled as he appraised the songbird before him.
"What's with the sudden spark of productive creativity?"
Regarding the guitarist with a cool blue green gaze Colleen merely handed Sully the top set of papers and then went about handing the rest out to Cage and Whip before plopping herself down into the leather loveseat that was kept in the sound area.
"Maurice told me this morning about your plans to leave us, Sully. Might I remind you that you're still under contract for the rest of this album?"
"And?"
Getting to her feet she was nearly nose to nose with the lanky sandy haired guitarist that had once shared a life with her. Her long dark hair spilled from it's clip and down her back like a flow of jet black ink filling the room with the scent that made Whip shift in his seat away from Cage's confused view.
"And that means I own your bony Irish ass until I am completely satisfied with how it sounds."
"Oh when you're satisfied? What about the rest of us? Last I checked we weren't your backing band."
"Technically you are. Without me there would be no band, no music to record. Without me you are nothing, David."
Pushing past him she stepped into the recording booth and signaled Cage to start rolling. Whip shifted to his feet quickly and joined her much to everyone's amazement. He was usually the last one in record his tracks if they didn't record together as a band.
Slipping behind the drum kit he settled and started the beat on the high hat for her. Colleen started to gently sway in time until she opened her eyes, something equally strange for her, and locked onto Sully's almost daring him to look away from her and truth she sang to the reel to reel.
"So I'll begin not to love you  Turn around, see me runnin' I'll say I loved you years ago  Tell myself you never loved me, no  Don't say that she's pretty  And did you say that she loved you? Baby, I don't want to know..."
The realization of Sully's infidelity to Colleen over the years became the elephant in the room as she sang. How he had used her and all but thrown her away until it became time to record a new album or head out on a tour came tumbling out.
"Fuck this! Fuck her!"
"Dave wait!"
Cage turned just in time to see Dave Sullivan grab his coat and slam into the heavy door of the studio only to have Maurice shake his head. If Mr. Groves were here to see this he'd be quite amused he noted to himself. The drumbeat took on a heartbeat rhythm as she sang.
"Time cast a spell on you, but you won't forget me I know I could've loved you, but you would not let me  I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice will haunt you.."
The only sound that could be heard from the parking lot was the squeal of Sully's tires on pavement as Colleen continued to purge her soul into the reel to reel.
"He's hurt her badly, Mo..."
The manager simply smiled and pointed towards the booth where the dark haired songbird was now chatting with the drummer.
"But whoever her new fellow is is doing a world of good her."
"Two musical perfectionists together..how sweet."

Mausoleum (1983)
"Simon, if this is demonic possession, some of my suggestions may seem very unscientific. Look, Simon, if you're too close, too involved personally... you'll have to step aside."
"I am that close. I'm that involved. That's why I can't step aside."

Le Giornate del Cinema Muto 2023: Pordenone Post No 5
Pordenone changes a person. I don’t just mean in the way that my bloodstream is now 80% espresso. It changes your aspirations. My dream now is to live in an apartment designed by Sonia Delaunay, watching Peter Elfelt’s dance films (they are playing before several of the screenings) all day. For loungewear, I would choose the louche shawl-collared robe sported by Jaque Catelain in Le Vertige, and…

Red Star’s Ben Smith Talks Years of Cat-Tastic Animation

Andrew Gold - Spooky, Scary Skeletons 1996
Andrew Maurice Gold was an American multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and record producer who influenced much of the Los Angeles-dominated pop/soft rock sound in the 1970s. Gold performed on scores of records by other artists, especially Linda Ronstadt, and had his own success with the US top 40 hits "Lonely Boy" (1977) and "Thank You for Being a Friend" (1978) (which was later used as the opening theme for The Golden Girls), as well as the UK top five hit "Never Let Her Slip Away" (1978). In the 1980s, he had further international chart success as one half of the new wave duo Wax. During the 1990s, Gold produced, composed, performed on and wrote tracks for films, commercials, and television soundtracks.
"Spooky, Scary Skeletons" is a Halloween song, first released on Gold's 1996 album Halloween Howls: Fun & Scary Music. It was one of nine original songs on the album, released to fill a void of availability of fun and scary Halloween original songs according to Gold on his 1996 liner notes. He produced, mixed, sang and played all the instruments on the track. It prominently features a xylophone to represent the sound of skeletal bones rattling.
In 1998, Disney included the song on their VHS tape Disney's Sing-Along Songs: Happy Haunting: Party at Disneyland! (which was released on DVD as Disney's Sing-Along Songs: Happy Haunting in 2006). They paired the song with the 1929 animated short film The Skeleton Dance by Ub Iwerks. The video has garnered over 31 million views since it was recreated and uploaded by a Youtube user. On October 31, 2013, the Youtube band The Living Tombstone created an electronic dance-like remix of the song with a faster tempo than the original. Their upload of the remix to YouTube has garnered over 102 million views. By 2022, there were over 5 million TikTok videos featuring the song. “Spooky, Scary Skeletons” was adapted into a children's picture book by Random House Children's Books featuring the lyrics to the song on August 27, 2024.
"Spooky, Scary Skeletons" received a total of 90% yes votes!

So in 1981, DIC (a French television company) partnered with TMS Entertainment (a Japanese entertainment company), and they went on to work together on many projects. One of the first was Lupin VIII.
Tumblr media
The idea was to make a new Lupin the 3rd series set in the future, featuring descendants of the Lupin the 3rd characters (who are of course very much like their ancestors).
This fell through after completely animating the first episode, because the estate of Maurice Leblanc (who created the character of Arsène Lupin) demanded royalties too large for the series to justify.
So the show fell through. Lots of work had been put into the show, scripts had been finished, many characters designed... And DIC decided to not let it go. They removed the Lupin the 3rd elements and refocused the show on the character who had been the descendant of Zenigata, the policeman. This character was a bumbling policeman with lots of gadgets wearing a trenchcoat...
Tumblr media
So they named him Inspector Gadget.

SHE'S CRAZY WITH THE HEAT — 1946 ft. The International Sweethearts of Rhythm
In 1946, William D. Alexander began the production of a series of one-reel shorts, half-hour featurettes and feature films that would serve a dual purpose. These black cast subjects would be released to theaters that welcomed African American audiences; concurrently, the music segments would be excerpted from the films and released as Soundies. Ultimately, sixteen of Alexander’s musical shorts reached the Panoram screen, spotlighting the bands of Lucky Millinder, Billy Eckstine, Henri Woode and the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. (Alexander actually produced four films with the Sweethearts, three ten-minute short subjects and one feature, although some of the performances turns up in more than one film; only three performances saw release as a Soundie.) The International Sweethearts of Rhythm grew out of a band formed in the 1930s at the Piney Woods Country Life School, an institution – in part an orphanage – for poor African American children. A member of the music department had apparently taken note of the success of Ina Ray Hutton’s Melodears and decided that an all-woman band composed of school members might lead to something special. While they performed locally, the ISR did not begin to hit its stride until it left Piney Woods and became a professional touring outfit in 1941. The band was certainly “international” in nature, and its ranks included African American, Latina, Chinese, Indian, White and Puerto Rican musicians. In 1941, Anna Mae Winburn joined the orchestra as front woman and featured vocalist. During the war years Maurice King joined the band as both arranger and band manager. Born Clarence King in 1911, King played reeds and later became a fine swing arranger. While here we recognize his composition and arrangement for the Sweethearts – he called this tune “She’s Crazy with the Heat ” – King is best known for his longtime association with Barry Gordy and Motown Records for which he served as director of artist development. He worked closely with vocal groups, teaching the singers how to voice and phrase together. “Maurice brought sophistication and class to Motown,” said session musician Johnny Trudell. By 1946, the Sweethearts was recognized as one of the finest African-American bands in jazz. They recorded for Guild and RCA Records, broadcast regularly for the Armed Forces Radio Service, and toured Europe entertaining the GIs. While much of the success was due to Maurice King’s arrangements, the band’s musicians were all strong, and a special nod must go to Viola Burnside, one of the most neglected tenor soloists of the 1940s. I chatted with my friend Roz Cron, a member of the Sweetheart’s reed section, shortly before her passing. When I thanked her for her contribution, she paused and said, “Yeah, we were one of the best, one of the very, very best.” (via Jazz on Film)

The visionary writer and director of Get Out, Us, and Nope, and founder of Monkeypaw Productions, curates this groundbreaking anthology of all-new stories of Black horror, exploring not only the terrors of the supernatural but the chilling reality of injustice that haunts our nation. A cop begins seeing huge, blinking eyes where the headlights of cars should be that tell him who to pull over. Two freedom riders take a bus ride that leaves them stranded on a lonely road in Alabama where several unsettling somethings await them. A young girl dives into the depths of the Earth in search of the demon that killed her parents. These are just a few of the worlds of Out There Screaming, Jordan Peele’s anthology of all-new horror stories by Black writers. Featuring an introduction by Peele and an all-star roster of beloved writers and new voices, Out There Screaming is a master class in horror, and—like his spine-chilling films—its stories prey on everything we think we know about our world... and redefine what it means to be afraid.
Pre-order Out There Screaming.
