Welcome
Hello! Welcome to my blog, The Supergirl Archives! My name is SK and this is side project born out of my love for Supergirl.
So, what are the Supergirl Archives? This is going to be my incomplete journey through the history of Supergirl comics. I’ve long loved the character, and since I have a DC Universe Infinite (DCUI) account, I thought it would be fun to go back and read through a bunch of old Supergirl comics. And I thought it might be fun to chronicle what I read.
This is what I’m planning to read:
THE ADVENTURES OF EARTH-ONE KARA ZOR-EL
Action Comics (vol 1) #252-359, 364-376, running from 1959-1969
Adventures Comics (vol 1) #278, 340, 360, 368, 374, 381-424, running from 1960-1972
Supergirl (vol 1). Supergirl’s first standalone series that ran for 10 issues from 1972-1974.
Supergirl (vol 2). Her second standalone series that ran for 23 issues from 1982-1984.

Superman Family (vol 1) #182, from 1979.
Detective Comics (vol 1) 508-510, from 1981.
the Phantom Zone (vol 1) #2-4, from 1982.
the Legion of Super-Heroes (vol 2) #294, 300-303, 314-315, from 1982-1894.
the Legion of Super-Heroes (vol 3) #16, from 1985.
Crisis on Infinite Earths (vol 1) #1-12, from 1985-1986.
THE ADVENTURES OF MATRIX
Superman (vol 2) #16, 19-22, 32-34, 65-66, from 1988-1992
Adventures of Superman (vol 1) #440-442, 444, 451, 453-457, 488-489, from 1988-1992
Action Comics (vol 1) #643-644, 674-681, 685-686, from 1989-1993.

Showcase ‘95 #1-2, 12, from 1995.
THE ADVENTURES OF LINDA DANVERS
Supergirl (vol 4). Linda Danver’s series that ran for 80 issues from 1996-2003)

Superman (vol 2) #160-161, from 2000
Superman: the Man of Steel (vol 1) #104-105, from 2000.
Adventures of Superman (vol 1) #582-583, from 2000.
Action Comics (vol 1) #769-770, from 2000.
Emperor Joker (vol 1) #1, from 2000
THE ADVENTURES OF NEW EARTH KARA ZOR-EL
Supergirl (vol 5). Kara’s reintroduction to the DCU that ran for 67 issues from 2005-2011.

the Brave and the Bold (vol 3) 2-6, 17-18, from 2007-2008.
Teen Titans (vol 30 #48-55, from 2007-2008
THE ADVENTURES OF PRIME EARTH KARA ZOR-EL(incomplete)
Supergirl (vol 6). The New 52 run that ran for 40 issues from 2011-2015.
Supergirl (vol 7). The Rebirth run that ran for 42 issues from 2016-2020.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (vol 1). The newest mini-series that ran for 8 issues in 2021-2022.
Why “an incomplete journey”? Well, I don’t know if I’m going to read every issue listed, but I’m going to read as many as I can (while still enjoying it), and I’m going to make sure that at the very worst, I’ll sample from each run. Also, I just can’t read everything because DCUI has a lot of gaps in its Action Comics library and there’s probably other issues of Adventure Comics and Action Comics that feature Supergirl, but what I listed are the major runs available to me.
As of right now, I’m going to focus on the Supergirl stories that happened in the main DCU continuity, which means unfortunately right now AU comics like Gotham City Garage, Bombshells, and the Dark Knights of Steel aren’t on my list, even if they are fantastic.
I’m specifically a fan of Kara Zor-El, but I wanted to read the Matrix and Linda Danvers runs, especially because they’re actually the versions of Supergirl that were around when I first got into her.
IF you’re a hardcore Supergirl fan, you know what happened to Kara in 1985. I haven’t decided if I want to read Crisis on Infinite Earths for this, but a part of me does feel like it’s an important enough part of Supergirl’s comic history to justify it.
I’m looking forward to having fun with this! And to read a bunch of comics (admittedly of varying degrees of quality) about one of my favorite superheroes!
- Hope, Help, and Compassion for all

The Multiverse List!
So, I said a while back that I'd post a list of universes within the Kryptonverse Multiverse, and the day for that is now! I've had this list for a couple of years by now (Google Docs says February 2020), and I've been picking at it every now and then, starting by going through the list on the Marvel wiki (a very, very long list) and then the DC ones (a much, much shorter but more confusing list, thanks to all the Crisis events). Of course, that would leave out quite a few universes in the series, considering they'd rarely have an existing crossover reality number with either Marvel or DC, in which case I came up with my own. Some were easy, like the Ben 10 world (Earth-10000, for Ben 10K), others I went the boring route and just used the numbering convention (taking the date it launched or the birthday of the main creative on the project), and some I just plain don't remember how I came up with (the ML one is a good example).
Anyway, this is not the full list, as some of the universes revealed would be a spoiler. The premise here is that these are dimensions Victor and Reed have catalogued (not necessarily visited), but I'm obviously not presenting this list in their voices. This is strictly out of context and just my own notes. If and when the Avengers discover the information the pair have gathered in their universe-hopping plan, I may have some notes from Victor and Reed's POV. Probably just for the more unique ones, though.
Without further ado (and under a read more in case you don't wanna get a bit spoiled), here you go!
Earth-1:
The main DC Comics continuity, as it currently exists (whatever form that takes).
Impossible for most interdimensional travelers to visit or interact with, but typically the source of many Multiverse-altering events.
Earth-12:
The world of the DC Animated Universe, from Batman: the Animated Series till Justice League Unlimited, plus the feature films and specials explicitly stated to happen in the same continuity.
Earth-16 (Ravenverse):
The world of Young Justice, in conjunction with the Teen Titans animated series. The original home of Earth-199999’s Kara Zor-El.
As seen in “Of Darkness and the Light”
Earth-25:
A cartoonish world full of animal people. Spider-Ham’s home.
Earth-31:
The world of the current continuity of DC films, from Man of Steel onwards.
Earth-38:
The Arrowverse combined, with all its various shows and spin-offs. Called Earth-Prime or Earth-1 in the shows, but to avoid any confusion with the main DC comics universe, I gave it CW Supergirl’s reality number.
Earth-52:
The world of the films spanning from Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox to Wonder Woman: Bloodlines (in this house, we don’t talk about Apokolips War).
Earth-65:
Spider-Gwen/Ghost-Spider’s home dimension.
Earth-89:
The Burtonverse, as seen in the Batman 1989 film and its sequels.
Earth-249:
The world of Miraculous Ladybug, rich with superheroes – most important among them the wielders of the magical jewels known as Miraculouses
Earth-616:
The mainline Marvel Comics continuity, whatever form that currently takes.
Earth-1048:
The combined realities of Insomniac’s Spider-Man games and Marvel’s Avengers game. Kind of a messy, unstable one on account of all the time travel and cosmic energy events.
Earth-1154 (Netherrealm):
A fusion of two previously separate, very broken universes: the Injustice universe, where Superman became a despotic tyrant after the Joker caused the death of his wife and unborn child; and the Mortal Kombat universe, home to such icons as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Raiden. Each shattered by straying so far from their respective frameworks that they became almost unrecognizable, they were knit together to avoid cosmic destruction. Combined post-canon of Injustice 2 and Mortal Kombat 11.
“Mistaken Identity” takes place here.
Earth-1218:
Actual, real life Earth. Hidden to all but the highest of cosmic entities in the Multiverse, this reality cannot be visited or interacted with, as any possible change or damage inflicted upon it could irrevocably alter the Multiverse or even destroy it altogether.
Earth-1610:
Home to Miles Morales’ version of Spider-Man, and the centerpiece to the Spiderverse event that would bring several Spider-powered heroes together.
Earth-8096:
The reality of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Wolverine and the X-Men
Earth-10000:
Home to the original/prime version of Ben Tennyson, wielder of the Omnitrix, and nexus world to the subsection of the Multiverse known as the Omniverse.
Earth-12041:
The reality of Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble
Earth-14512:
Home of Peni Parker, her telepathic, radioactive spider, and her SP//dr mech suit
Earth-90214:
The Noir Universe, where the Marvel heroes surfaced in the 1920s and 1930s, and fought organized crime in those times. Home of Spider-Man Noir.
Earth-96283:
The combined realities of the Raimi Spider-Man films, the pre-Days of Future Past X-Men series, and the Fantastic Four films.
Earth-120703:
The combined realities of the Webb Amazing Spider-Man films, Venom 1 and 2, and the Deadpool films, for maximum bi/pan chaos
Earth-199999 (Kryptonverse):
Once the Marvel Cinematic Universe as seen in its various films and TV shows, this universe has been heavily modified into a melting pot of elements and characters from dozens of alternate realities, forcibly made to mesh together by Celestials in a delicate balance.
The entire Kryptonverse series takes place here, of course.
Earth-1222003 (Invincible):
The world of Invincible (inspired by the TV show, not the comics)
As seen in “Just One Dimension Over”
(I had to nix a handful because character limits apparently? Anyway, I'll update with more later!)

Okay, say if Supergirl was to go "bad" (not the benevolent person we see), then how would you write it from your perspective? At this point does she even have a motivation to go rogue from your POV?
You know, that’s an interesting question! And I think to answer that initial part, I have to answer the second question first. (Under a read more b/c it’s...long-winded. XD)
I don’t think Kara has a motivation to go bad*, no. In the show, or in the comics.
All of the ‘evil’ or ‘bad’ versions of Kara we’ve seen are the result of outside factors. Off the top of my head: Red K Kara - mind-altering substance. Earth-X Kara** - Raised by literal Nazis. Red Daughter*** - Raised by Lex. Red Lantern Kara - Red Lantern Ring amplified her anger. ‘Killers of Krypton’ Kara - Rogol Zaar’s ax amplified her anger. Batman Who Laughs Kara - Joker poison. Black Kryptonite Kara - substance that took all of her negative traits and made like...a separate evil person. Injustice Kara**** - Was found and trained by fascist superheroes. Apokolips Kara - Brainwashed by Darkseid.
You rarely see a Kara who is bad/rogue/evil because of a conscious choice on her part, or because she’s reached a breaking point. You see a lot of angry Kara stories, but something has to literally amplify that anger to get Kara to engage in destructive behavior. I think the closest a comic has ever come to like, a ‘bad’ Kara arc is maybe the Nu52 stuff, or the start of the early 00s run, where she had a lot of anger on board, but that mainly manifested as teen angst. Kara never went out and enslaved the Earth, ya know? She just like. Punched Clark real hard and smoked and got a tattoo. (Also, gosh bless Sterling Gates, who explained it all away as Kryptonite poisoning.)
Same goes for TV show Kara! She gets angry, but that anger never progresses to like, ‘I’M THE BAD GUY, NOW.’ We’ve seen how she responds to things like losing loved ones (Mon-El, her mom, etc.) and losing her whole world (MULTIPLE TIMES) so if those instances didn’t serve as ‘breaking points’, I do not know what could conceivably motivate her to ‘burn it all down’ as it were. (I know there are folks who maintain that if Alex were to die, she’d lose it, BUT. BUT. We can look to...ugh. “Alex” to see that yeah, Kara starts to come a little unglued, but Alex’s insistence that she can’t do that is enough to pull Kara back. I imagine that Kara has internalized this, so if something terrible DID happen to Alex, she would not go down a dark path, b/c Alex wouldn’t want her to.)
SO. How would I write a “bad” Kara? IMO, it would have to be some sort of outside force, if we’re starting with the Kara Zor-El we know and love. Red K. Joker Venom. Magic brainwashing. OR. Or. You have to start with a blank slate (like Red Daughter) or Kara as a literal child (like Earth-X) so that you can, for lack of a better term, manipulate her into being evil. IT’S THE ONLY WAY.
TL;DR - We joke about Rovner’s little hiccup where he almost said that Kara was the most heroic of the Arrowverse heroes but IS THE MAN LYING? I DON’T THINK SO.
*So, as I was writing this out, I realized that ‘bad’ vs. ‘rogue’ is kind of key, actually. Because while I don’t see Kara ever going evil or bad, I think she could, maaaaaybe, go rogue. Kara will absolutely break some rules if she believes she’s in the right/doing good. (Stealing Lex’s journals for Lena comes to mind but that also features some manipulation and lies! Fun!) ...But this still requires making more changes to stuff around Kara than Kara herself.   **Earth-X is, I think, the Kara to come the closest to the ‘what if Superman was EEEEVIL’ trope. It requires a very specific set of circumstances, though. (Also I’m just now remembering this Kara is called ‘Overgirl,’ you can see how little I think about this one.) ***I don’t even know that I’d call Red Daughter ‘evil’ but she did want to take over a country, so. I suppose she makes the list. (Again, though, this Kara had to have her mind COMPLETELY WIPED in order to get her to that point.)  ****Kara defects and joins the good guys INJUSTICE 2 IS TERRIBLE FOR SUPERMAN FANS, BUT BOY, IS IT A GREAT SUPERGIRL GAME.

off the rack #1316
Monday, March 8, 2021
Coming up on a year since the pandemic started. I hope you're all healthy and safe. I am hopeful that vaccines will be deployed widely and help us all feel less anxious. I am fortunate enough to be one of those people who is happy as a bug snug in a rug while self isolating. I do really miss my dear friends and family but hugs can wait until we're all vaccinated.
My thanks to Doug for lending me these comic books to read.
Batman Annual #5 - James Tynion IV (writer) James Stokoe (art) Clayton Cowles (letters). It's the origin of Clownhunter and it's not very original. If I had to pay $4.99 US I would have passed on this and lived with leaving a hole in my Batman collection. If you're not familiar with this new vigilante, he's an Asian teenager named Bao who decides he's going to kill the Joker and all of the villain's sycophants. The reason he becomes Clownhunter (and killer) is very mundane. I wish they could have come up with a new motivator. Maybe the philosophical discussion about what to do about the Joker might interest some fans but I found this story quite tedious. I also didn't like the way Bao and his parents were portrayed. Did they really have an Asian saying "Ah, so"? Yes they did on page 8. Shades of Charlie Chan, Batman. I was not offended, just disappointed.
Batman/Catwoman #3 - Tom King (writer) Clay Mann (art) Tomeu Morey (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). I was thrilled to see the town of Port Orange, Florida mentioned on the first page. My pal Al lives there. It's also where Selina finally catches up with the Joker and does what Batman never did. I love this Black Label book taking familiar characters and treating them in a new and interesting way. Here's a future where Selina has survived her husband Bruce's death and their daughter Helena is the new Batwoman. Now I wait to see how mother and daughter deal with the Angel of Death.
And now, more Future State books.
Future State: Robin Eternal #2 - Meghan Fitzmartin (writer) Eddy Barrows (pencils) Eber Ferreira (inks) Adriano Lucas (colours) Pat Brosseau (letters). The consequence of Tim Drake/Robin being dunked in Lazarus resin is that now he's immortal. Whoop-dee-doo. Not only is this a boring Robin beats up bad guys issue but the art lacked any logical perspective. This issue takes place on a train but you would think it's in a huge building based on the art. I know it's comic books but I hate when one doesn't make visual sense. I think that's just laziness.
Future State: Kara Zor-El Superwoman #1 & #2 - Marguerite Bennett (writer) Marguerite Sauvage (art) Wes Abbott (letters). This 2-issue fairy tale was not meant for old farts like me and Doug. With it's soft pastel colours these books should have included glitter and bubblegum flavoured lip gloss. Maybe young tween girls will like this. The moral of this story is "no one is born wise".
Future State: Dark Detective #3 - Mariko Tamaki (writer) Dan Mora (art) Jordie Bellaire (colours) Aditya Bidikar (letters). There are not one but two Batmans in this issue. You've got Bruce in his new capeless costume but here he's wearing a trench coat to give that fluttering effect, and then there's the new guy in the Bat suit, cape and all. The "uh-oh" point of the story hits here when the bad guys discover where Bruce is hiding out. The Matthew Rosenberg (writer) Carmine Di Giandomenico (art) Antonio Fabela (colours) & AndWorld Design (letters) Grifter story concludes here too with a double cross and a whole lot more of Helena/Huntress. This is my favourite Future State book so far.
Future State: Superman of Metropolis #1 & #2 - Sean Lewis (writer) John Timms (art) Gabe Eltaeb (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). If you're wondering how a grown up Jonathan Kent takes over for his dad as Metropolis's protector then these two $5.99 US books will satisfy your curiosity. The villain of the story is an evolved Brainiac who is a big multi-mouthed ball now. Metropolis is shrunk ala the bottle city of Kandor, the citizens go nuts but Jon returns things back to normal in the end with the help of Kara/Supergirl. I don't know why Kara's a girl in this story and a woman elsewhere. Each issue has two back-ups so you get your money's worth. One features Mister Miracle and the other the Guardian. They are both dealing with bad things inside the bottled Metropolis. You won't miss much if you don't read them. The Mister Miracle story "The Metropolis Menagerie" is done my Brandon Easton (writer) Valentine De Landro (art) Marissa Louise (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). The Guardian story is brought to you by Sean Lewis (writer) Cully Hamner & Michael Avon Oeming (art) Laura Martin (colours) AndWorld Design (letters). This one got me excited because a villain wants to throw Jimmy Olsen off of the Daily Planet building.
Future State: Catwoman #2 - Ram V (writer) Otto Schmidt (art) Tom Napolitano (letters). Read this to find out if Catwoman saves the lives of the people on the train. You will also find out if Bruce is freed from the bad guys. Talia Al-Ghul appearing is the deus ex machina in this story. I like the new Cheshire and Onomatopoeia is always fun.
Future State: Superman: Worlds of War #2 - Phillip Kennedy Johnson (writer) Mikel Janin (art) Jordie Bellaire (colours) & Dave Sharpe (letters). In "The Many Deaths of Superman" the Man of Steel fights in the arena of Warworld where Mongul resurrects him after every death match. It's the typical brutal battle scenes and super villain gloating. What's more compelling is an old newspaper story that Clark Kent wrote that inspired a young woman who travels to Smallville. I was totally confused by the three back-up stories featuring Mister Miracle, Midnighter and the Black Racer because they were not very good. I am a completist and have to finish what I start. I could have stopped reading after the $3.99 US main story in this bloated $7.99 US comic book  but my obsessive compulsive nature wouldn't let me. It's a character flaw I wish I could change.
Future State: The Next Batman #1 - John Ridley (writer) Nick Derington (art) Tamra Bonvillain (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). All the teasers for this book hyped the fact that this Batman is black. You won't get the secret identity in this first issue but there are a bunch of likely candidates. Lucas Fox is a possibility but it's confusing because he's a bad guy in another Future State book. This is another $7.99 US book with back-ups. These are more coherent than the ones in Future State: Superman: Worlds of War.
Future State: Outsiders by Brandon Thomas (writer) Sumit Kumar (pencils) Sumit Kumar & Raul Fernandez (inks) Jordie Bellaire (colours) & Steve Wands (letters) gathers together some old Batman associates helping Gotham City citizens escape persecution by the Magistrates outside Gotham City's borders. Get it? It was nice seeing Katana in action.
Future State: Arkham Knights by Paul Jenkins (writer) Jack Herbert (art) Gabe Eltaeb (colours) & Rob Leigh (letters) gathers together some of Batman's rogues gallery to fight the oppressive Magistrate. Two-Face, Mr. Zsasz, Dr. Phosphorus, Killer Croc and other ex-inmates of Arkham Asylum are being lead by an armoured Astrid Arkham. It's super villains being super heroes.
Future State: The Next Batman #2 - John Ridley (writer) Nick Derington (breakdowns) Laura Braga (art) Arif Prianto (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). We learn the secret identity of the new caped Batman in this issue. It's Lucas Fox's brother. He has a brother? This also has three new back-up stories.
"Batgirls" is by Vita Ayala (writer) Aneke (art) Trish Mulvihill (colours) & Becca Carey (letters). Batgirl/Orphan Cassandra Cain gets locked up in the Magistrate Detention Facility where both good guys/white hats and bad guys/black coats are incarcerated. She got caught on purpose because her mission is to find Oracle and Batman and free them. She gets help from Spoiler who is queen of the inmates. In this reality Cass is way more articulate than she used to be. I didn't like that. I also didn't like that in the other Future State stories the Magistrate foot soldiers have a shoot to kill order for any masks that they encounter. Why are all of these masks alive? Anyways, this part ends with the white hats and black coats forming an alliance so Cass can get on with her mission.
"Gotham City Sirens: Ladies' Night Out" is by Paula Sevenbergen (writer) Rob Haynes (breakdowns) Emanuela Lupacchino (pencils) Wade von Grawbadger (inks) John Kalisz (colours) Becca Carey (letters). Catwoman and Poison Ivy spring a domestic droid named Dee Dee (get it?) from servitude and they have a night on the town at a bar. The bar is run by Sam Bradley and both super heroes and villains can imbibe in peace. Fans of Sex and the City may like this. Not a lot of drama until the last page when the joint is raided by Magistrate goons and major characters are shot.
Future State: The Next Batman #3 - John Ridley (writer) Nick Derington (breakdowns) Laura Braga (art) Arif Prianto (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). This is the "uh-oh" moment in the story where the hero is felled by the villain. A wounded Batman is attacked by the murderer he's trying to bring to justice. I saw that coming.
I like the change with Black Lightning in the Outsiders back-up.
I like the art in the Arkham Knights back-up even though the dialogue is eye roll inducing.
Future State: The Next Batman #4 - Jace/Batman lives, as if that was in any doubt. This story would have been a lot more interesting if Bruce/Batman was really dead. Even if the Future State line of comics dies out this Next Batman is a cop out. The Batgirls story ends with Cassandra/Orphan saving Barbara/Oracle and the Resistance gaining ground on the Magistrates. The Gotham City Sirens story ends with Catwoman and Poison Ivy helping the Resistance get an advantage in their war with the Cybers thanks to Dee Dee.
I admit that I was sucked in by the hype for this mini. The Next Batman being black intrigued me. The story itself was meh and I would not have missed anything by not reading it. I was not engaged as a mature reader but I think someone in their teens might like all the stories in these four issues.

Last month Warner Bros. revealed that a new Superman movie was in production, with Star Wars and Star Trek director JJ Abrams producing and Black Panther comics writer Ta-Nehisi Coates working on the script. This announcement came just in advance of the release of Zack Snyder's Justice League, which brings back Henry Cavill as Superman.
RELATED: Superman & Lois: 5 Best Moments From The Pilot (& The 5 Worst)
Beyond this basic information not much has been revealed about the project. There have been rumors it will be a reboot unconnected to the DCEU, similar to Matt Reeves' The Batman and perhaps even featuring a Black Superman, but Coates himself suggested the new Superman movie might be part of the DCEU after all. There are certainly pros and cons to both.
10 Standalone: Superman Doesn't Have To Be White
Tumblr media
While it's rumored that Warner Bros is looking to create a Superman movie with a Black actor as the lead, and the hiring of Ta-Nehisi Coates seems to point in that direction, there is no confirmation that this will actually come to pass.
Hopefully, it will as this would be a terrific victory for representation and diversity for DC, especially in light of recent allegations made by actor Ray Fisher about director Joss Whedon. It would also help them stand out from Marvel, which tends to cast white actors in traditionally white roles rather than aiming for diversity through these means.
9 DCEU: Henry Cavill Can Stay
Tumblr media
At no point has either Henry Cavill or Warner Bros confirmed that he is no longer part of the DCEU, nor has he been fired from playing Superman. Rumors to the contrary all stem from Cavill being unable to appear as a cameo in Shazam due to his commitments to The Witcher.
With Zack Snyder's Justice League hopefully reminding fans why Cavill was so great as Superman, he needs another movie with him as the sole superhero, something he's not had since Man of Steel.
8 Standalone: No Continuity Required
Tumblr media
If Zack Snyder's Justice League proves anything, it's that the continuity of the DCEU has got somewhat complicated, even more so once fans begin discussing which version of Justice League is canon. With the DCEU Superman, for example, Clark Kent is canonically dead.
RELATED: 5 Reasons The Justice League Theatrical Cut Is A Worthy DC Movie (& 5 Why You Should Wait For The Snyder Cut)
While it's probably possible for the filmmakers to think up an excuse about how Kent survived, it would be a lot easier just to wipe the slate clean. This would also bring back Jimmy Olsen and Mercy Graves, and allow Lex Luthor to be a businessman again.
7 DCEU: So Much More Left To Tell
Tumblr media
If there's one major reason not to have a major character such as Superman break from the DCEU it's that there are so many more stories left to tell within it, especially with this version of Superman. While the DCEU Batman is deliberately framed at the end of his career, and the leaked Justice League 2 storyboards showed he was supposed to die as part of the conclusion of the "Knightmare" storyline, Superman is still learning what it means to be an icon.
Audiences need to see him take on the likes of Brainiac and even Darkseid if possible while dealing with the fallout from the previous movies.
6 Standalone: A Break From The Divisive Snyderverse
Tumblr media
Whether you love or loathe Zack Snyder's DC movies - Man of Steel, Batman V Superman, and Zack Snyder's Justice League - it's impossible to deny that they have been divisive. While fans will defend them to the hilt, they're certainly not for everyone, which is part of the reason Warner Bros made such an effort to retool Justice League into something more crowd-pleasing.
That mostly failed, but a fresh Superman movie with a new writer/director team in a brand new continuity might be a chance to make something that appeals to a wider audience.
5 DCEU: Supergirl Needs A Mentor
Tumblr media
Last month it was revealed that the DCEU's Supergirl had been cast after many years of rumors, and The Young and the Restless actor Sasha Calle will be playing Kara Zor-El. Her first (and presumably not her last) appearance will be in next year's The Flash, where she will star alongside Ezra Miller's Barry Allen and both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as Batman.
Notable by his absence is Henry Cavill's Superman, as it would've made sense for him to appear as a mentor figure for his Kryptonian cousin. If Cavill returns for another Superman movie he might have a chance to do just that.
4 Standalone: There's No Reason The DCEU Can't Continue
Tumblr media
One of the biggest concerns fans have about the idea of Henry Cavill being replaced as Superman, and the next movie potentially being separate from the DCEU, is the suggestion that Cavill's Superman won't get to appear in any further DC movies if it happens. This is patently untrue.
RELATED: Superman: 10 Comics That Could Inspire The Next Film
As both Joker and The Batman prove, Warner Bros is quite content to allow more than one version of a character to appear in movies and TV shows, and the DCEU can continue with Henry Cavill's Superman if they need him, even if there's a new standalone Superman movie happening at the same time.
3 DCEU: The Amazing Spider-Man Effect
Tumblr media
In terms of audience anticipation, perhaps the biggest problem with releasing a standalone Superman movie in its own separate universe is that by and large audiences don't take very kindly to reboots and fresh origin storylines coming too soon after the last one.
The DCEU is essentially all spun out of Man of Steel, so it doesn't matter so much if Batman gets a separate movie, but a standalone Superman reboot coming so soon after Zack Snyder's Justice League (and not that long after Man of Steel) raises too many comparisons to The Amazing Spider-Man, which audiences were very negative about regarding how quickly it arrived after Spider-Man 3.
2 Standalone: The Batman Is Greatly Anticipated
Tumblr media
Matt Reeves' The Batman reboot coming next year is the best argument for the new Superman movie to be standalone. Currently, the first teaser trailer for The Batman has around 30 million views on Warner Bros' YouTube channel, and even though it's still a year away fans are greatly anticipating it.
This is despite both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton reportedly appearing in The Flash DCEU movie, which should also come out in 2022. DCEU fans aren't angry that The Batman is a standalone movie, in fact, they're completely in support of it.
1 DCEU: Zack Snyder's Justice League Is Getting A Lot Of Attention
Tumblr media
After Justice League flopped in 2017 it seemed very easy for Warner Bros to essentially make Henry Cavill's Superman a scapegoat, fuelling rumors towards a Supergirl movie and providing no news on Man of Steel 2. Now, however, the tables have turned, and what should have just been a bone for fans to persuade them to subscribe to HBO Max has basically turned into a phenomenon.
Zack Snyder's Justice League is getting a lot of attention and in particular, the return of Cavill's Superman in the black solar suit. It would therefore be wise for Warner Bros to capitalize on this sudden surge of popularity and confirm Henry Cavill's return for the next Superman movie.

DC Comics has released digitally via DC Entertainment a plethora of collected editions, trades and digital first issues for classic and current series.
DC Universe by Mike Mignola
Mike Mignola, best known as the creator of Hellboy, started out his comics art career drawing the adventures of the World’s Greatest Super-Heroes, applying his moody artwork to tales of Superman, Batman, Swamp Thing and more. Now, this new collection assembles these stories written by John Byrne, Roger Stern, Neil Gaiman, Paul Kupperberg, and others for the first time.
Collects: SUPERMAN: THE WORLD OF KRYPTON #1-4, ACTION COMICS ANNUAL #2, SUPERMAN #18 and 23, BATMAN: LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #54, BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHTS #36, SWAMP THING ANNUAL #5, PHANTOM STRANGER #1-4 and much more.

Deadman: Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love (2016-2017)
Boston Brand is a dead man walking. More than walking, actually—his uncanny abilities enable him to float, fly and seize control of the bodies of the living. He’s no mere ghost. He’s something more powerful, more heroic. He is Deadman! And he’s about to meet Berenice—a living woman with powers of her own.
Berenice’s complicated life and loves have driven her to the haunted halls of the sprawling mansion known as Glencourt Manor. It’s a place where the forces of darkness are known to gather—a house where a person with Berenice’s power to talk to the dead could accomplish great good…or unleash incredible evil.
Separated by the boundary between life and death, yet able to walk between both worlds, Deadman and Berenice must work together to unravel the mystery of the Manor and defeat the dark forces that threaten to erupt. Mystery, murder, resurrection and romance await. The only question is, are their hearts and souls strong enough to survive?
Unlock the answer in DEADMAN: DARK MANSION OF FORBIDDEN LOVE, from acclaimed creators Sarah Vaughn (ALEX + ADA), Lan Medina (FABLES) and José Villarrubia (SWEET TOOTH). This Gothic tale of passion and betrayal is an all-new twist on the character of Boston Brand. Collects DEADMAN: DARK MANSION OF FORBIDDEN LOVE Books #1-3.

Doom Patrol (2016-) Vol. 1: Brick by Brick
The spirit of Grant Morrison’s groundbreaking DOOM PATROL is captured in this debut series starring the cult-favorite misfits as a part of Gerard Way’s new Young Animal imprint.
Flex Mentallo, Robotman, Rebis, Crazy Jane, and more are back to twist minds and take control. This new take on a classic embraces and reimagines the Morrison run’s signature surrealism and irreverence. Incorporating bold, experimental art and a brash tone to match a new generation of readers, Gerard Way’s DOOM PATROL establishes radical new beginnings, breaks new ground, and honors the warped team dynamic of the world’s strangest heroes.
This abstract and unexpected ensemble series nods at the Doom Patrol’s roots by continuing to break the barriers of the traditional superhero genre. Collects issues #1-6.
DOOM PATROL is the flagship title of Young Animal–a four-book grassroots mature reader imprint, creatively spearheaded by Gerard Way, bridging the gap between the DCU and Vertigo, and focusing on the juxtaposition between visual and thematic storytelling.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps (2016-) Vol. 2: Bottled Light
A part of DC Rebirth!
Hal Jordan is about to go from the head of the Green Lantern Corps to an army of one. Jordan’s long, illustrious–and tumultuous–tenure with the Corps takes several hairpin turns. At lightspeed. Toward a black hole. In a blender!
For starters, the Green Lantern Corps has disappeared, and now Sinestro’s own Corps enforces his uniquely brutal brand of law and order in the universe. As a result, Jordan has no ring to sling, or Sector 2814 (a.k.a. Earth) to protect. (So more of the usual for Hal!)
Green Lantern veteran Robert Venditti teams up with Rafa Sandoval and Ethan Van Sciver to pilot HAL JORDAN & THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS VOL. 2! Collects HAL JORDAN & THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS #8-13.
Rebirth honors the richest history in comics, while continuing to look towards the future. These are the most innovative and modern stories featuring the world’s greatest superheroes, told by some of the finest storytellers in the business.
Honoring the past, protecting our present, and looking towards the future. This is the next chapter in the ongoing saga of the DC Universe. The legacy continues.

Injustice 2 (2017-) #9
Batman asks Ted Kord to join his new Justice League Council, but Ted runs afoul of Deadshot before he can answer.
#gallery-0-29 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-29 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-29 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-29 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Supergirl (2005-2011) Vol. 3: Ghosts of Krypton
Since Kara Zor-El of Krypton came to Earth, she has been confused by its people and customs. In her role as Supergirl, she’s found it hard to adapt to her new home and still struggles with the loss of her family and home planet. The world views her as a lesser version of the Man of Steel-her cousin, mentor and only living family member. What will it take for the most powerful girl on Earth to prove herself?
That’s what the Kryptonian teen wants to find out. Her quest will take her from her own past on doomed Krypton to the distant future of the Legion of Super-Heroes. And on Earth, she vows to save a little boy from the cancer that is killing him. Superman and Wonder Woman believe that Kara’s obsessions are dangerous and want her to stop. Will she be able to save Earth and its people…or will she fail after trying too hard to show the world that she is worthy of her title?
Critically acclaimed author Kelley Puckett (BATGIRL) with artists Drew Johnson (WONDER WOMAN) and Ron Randall (OUTSIDERS) test the Girl of Steel’s mettle in these classic Supergirl stories. Collects SUPERGIRL #23-33.
#gallery-0-30 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-30 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-30 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-30 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Wonder Woman: Paradise Lost
Batman’s home, Gotham City, is being transformed into a land resembling ancient Greece, lorded over by evil gods. And once the gods of war, discord, fear and terror combine their essences with those of the Joker, Scarecrow, and Poison Ivy, Batman finds himself in the need of help from Wonder Woman. But when the gods decide to merge with Batman as well, the Amazon princess finds that even the aid of Gotham’s other protectors, Nightwing and Robin, as well as her own protégé, Wonder Girl, may not be enough to end this evil reign.
#gallery-0-31 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-31 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-31 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-31 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Wonder Woman: Paradise Found
Wonder Woman’s world is falling to pieces. Her home of Paradise Island has faced a devastating civil war, and her mother, Queen Hippolyta, has abolished the monarchy, ending Diana’s status as a princess. But the Amazon Warrior must contend with far worse in the adventures that confront her in this volume collecting WONDER WOMAN #171-177, as well as select Profile Pages from WONDER WOMAN SECRET FILES #3. Acclaimed writer/artist Phil Jimenez is joined by Adam Hughes for one of the most difficult chapters of Diana’s life. This story reveals a dear friend of Diana’s transformed into a deadly enemy; a new, more menacing Cheetah; an intergalactic war – with terrible consequences for our heroine; and the return of an arch-nemesis that may spell doom for the male super-heroes of the world. The relentless onslaught is almost too much for Wonder Woman to bear! Arguing with her mother becomes the least of Diana’s concerns as she joins countless heroes in the battle against Imperiex. And when Circe initiates her revenge against the Amazon, the world’s super-heroines join Diana in a fight against the evil witch and several other female super-villains. With battle after battle facing Wonder Woman, is there any hope that Diana can find paradise?
