Much to everyone’s disappointment, Tiffany and Ethan eloped, so Tobias and Bryce didn’t get this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a prank. 

However, our dear Tobias still found a way to pull the joke after E&T shared the news:

It was just what the doctor ordered—doctors, to be exact. While Tobias and Casey did their best to find joy in each day, their lives as doctors at Edenbrook Hospital were quite stressful. They knew they had to play as hard as they worked to maintain balance, and that’s why they desperately needed this vacation.

On the second day of their trip, they were quite proud of themselves, for they managed a few impressive feats even before the clock struck noon: prying their bodies off of each other, managing to will themselves out of bed, and, most recently, getting up from their poolside lounge chairs. It was only to refresh their drinks at the tiki bar, but on a tropical holiday, they viewed these as grand accomplishments.         

Casey hopped up on a bar stool with a broad smile. Closing her eyes, she took in the salty air and warm breeze. This was near perfection! Her handsome boyfriend slipped onto the stool beside her, wrapping his arm protectively behind her back and motioning to the bartender, who quickly approached him.

She was noticeably attractive. Tall and curvaceous, her sunkissed curls cascaded over her perfectly tanned shoulders, falling over the top of her hibiscus print bikini top. The mischievous glint in her eyes matched her flirtatious smile. She was confident, almost too confident, as she sauntered Tobias’s way.

“What’ll it be, handsome,” she winked as Casey rolled her eyes. She was used to people flirting with Tobias, but she also knew what it was like to work for tips, so she went along with it.

“Rum runner for the lady and a Mai Tai for me,” he replied.

She returned with the drinks in an instant, an alluring smile on her lips. “First one’s on me, sweetheart,” she said, meeting his eyes for a moment too long. “I’m Amber. Let me know if you need anything else.”

Tobias smiled politely, lifting his glass. “Thanks. Appreciate it.”

Casey stirred her drink, eyeing Tobias as he brought his glass to his lips. “What?” he asked playfully.

“Oh, nothing,” she chuckled.

Tobias was inherently charming, a natural flirt whose harmless banter was part of his reportiore. Casey knew these things about him, and they were part of what made her love him. But as Amber strutted back... again and again... her comments more pointed and her laughter more ridiculously exaggerated each time, it became clear that she wasn’t just jockeying for tips.

When Amber leaned over the bar, her gaze locked on Tobias’s, Casey was close to having enough. “So, do you come here often?” Amber asked with another wink.

Tobias sensed the shift, but he was still amused. He chuckled lightly and replied, “Not exactly. My girlfriend and I don’t live around the corner." He nodded toward Casey, making it clear they were together.

Amber’s eyes flicked toward the blonde beauty, but instead of backing off, she doubled down. “Hmm. Well, if you ever come back... alone... be sure to let me know. I do live around the corner, and I'd love to show you around.”

Tobias shrugged it off, but Casey felt her jaw tighten as Amber sashayed away. She wasn’t the jealous type, but come on. That wasn’t bold; it was flat-out disrespectful.

Casey shot Tobias a sideways glance. “All right, I know flirting is in your DNA,” she said dryly. ���But come on!”

"What?" He said. "I didn't flirt with her. She was flirting with me! And I made it perfectly clear we're together."

"I know..." Casey said, her cheeks turning red. "But... still..."

Tobias’s eyes crinkled as he looked at his love with a teasing smile. "Still what? Uh oh, is someone jealous?”

“I’m not jealous,” Casey insisted. “I’m all for innocent flirtation, but I don’t like being disrespected. I mean, I’m sitting right here.”

“Come on, babe,” he said, placing a kiss on her forehead. “You know you have nothing to worry about. I’m all yours.”

“You better believe I know it. If I thought you were playing along with Miss Amber, you’d be wearing this rum runner, and I won’t even tell you where the decorative paper umbrella would end up.”

Tobias howled with laughter as Casey swatted his arm. "Remind me never to piss you off!"

“You think it’s cute when I get mad, don’t you?”

“Maybe a little,” Tobias grinned, leaning over to kiss her cheek. “It’s kind of adorable.”

“Hmm. I’ll show you adorable,” she said with a mock pout.

“Keep that thought,” he said, excusing himself to go to the restroom.

Casey glared across the bar at Amber, not that it mattered, as she never once looked Casey's way. But she wasn’t about to let this ruin her day. She took another sip of her drink and turned around to look at the beautiful view of the beach, and her mood lightened once again. But as she was about to turn around, she felt a presence on the stool beside her... an unfamiliar presence.

A well-tanned California surfer type sitting beside her on the same stool Tobias had just left. He was tall and handsome, with a smile so bright she considered putting on her sunglasses, and his attention was focused solely on her.

“Hey there,” he said with a sly grin, “I couldn’t help but notice you. I haven't been able to take my eyes off of you since you arrived. Someone as beautiful as you shouldn’t be sitting here all alone, so I thought you might like some company."

Casey chuckled to herself. She knew how to flirt and was dating the master himself. Was this really the best this guy had to offer?

“Well, if you’ve been watching me since I arrived, then you know I’m not alone,” she replied, glancing in the direction where Tobias had gone.

But the man either didn’t notice or didn’t care. Leaning in closer, she swore his smile grew brighter – thought it seemed that would defy science. “Well, I thought he might be boring you. I'm sure I could keep you more entertained."

Casey spat out her drink, laughing as she wiped her mouth. She was about to begin her retort, but Tobias appeared before she could say a word. He cleared his throat loudly, keeping his expression neutral, though there was a fire in his eyes. “Hey, buddy. You’re in my seat.”

The guy looked Tobias over, then back at Casey, clearly not getting the message. “I don’t see your name on it,” he replied, undeterred, as Tobias’s jaw tightened.

“Yeah, well, I don’t see your name on it either, Ken,” Tobias spat. “So lift your ass off of it and go find your own Barbie. Because my girlfriend is taken."

“Girlfriend, huh,” ‘Ken’ leered. “Lucky guy. She could do better."

Tobias glared at him as he walked away, his scowl becoming more pronounced. He turned back to Casey. “Who the hell does that guy think he is?”

"Got me," Casey shrugged, biting back a grin. “But I think you declared that he's... Ken."

"Yeah, well, he's going to be a flattened Ken if he tries that again."

Casey raised an eyebrow. "Uh oh, is someone jealous?” she teased, mimicking his earlier words. "Don't you trust me?"

Tobias frowned, but there was a playful glint in his eyes. “Of course, I trust you! And I’m not jealous. I'm not; it's just that he was very respectful.”

“Mmm-hmm. Right, you’re not jealous,” she said, voice dripping with sarcasm. “I totally get it.”

Tobias turned to her with that smirk that made her melt, whether they were in the middle of a Boston winter or the Caribbean heat.

“Shut up,” he laughed, pulling her close for a kiss.

They both smiled against each other’s lips before pulling back from a kiss. Casey looked up at him, her eyes sparkling. “Face it, babe. It’s not easy having such a hot significant other, is it?”

Tobias beamed at her, brushing a strand of hair away from her face. “Nope. It’s not easy at all. But it certainly has its...perks.”

“Mmm,” she said, downing the rest of her drink. “You know, it's getting a little hot out here. Why don’t we go back to our suite and revisit some of those perks.”

Tobias pushed his stool away from the bar with a loud scraping noise. He was on his feet in an instant. “That sounds like a perfect idea to me. Maybe we can hook up Amber and Ken before we go.”

“Pfft,” Casey shrugged, “I’m here to take care of you – you're here to take care of me. Them? They're on their own."

"That's right," he said, bopping her nose with his finger. "Something we'll never be again."

He pulled Casey close and gave her a lingering kiss, eliciting frowns from their admirers. Casey could feel her boyfriend's growing excitement, and she giggled as she pulled away, taking his hand with a grin.

"Come on, babe," she winked. "Let's get back to the suite before we expose everyone to those perks."

At that point, it was clear. Amber and 'Ken' could remain at the bar for hours, but they wouldn't see Tobias or Casey again, for they had better things to do—namely, each other.

A/N: One of the readers on AO3 asked once if I'd consider writing a Tobias and Cassie interaction, similar to the food puns chapter in book 3. This fic is inspired by that ask. Submission for @choicesmaychallenge24 prompt 'mania' for the use of too many puns and uncontrollable laughter. 😂

Cassie Valentine was run off her feet. As a third-year resident and junior fellow at Boston’s prestigious Edenbrook Hospital, her free time was increasingly being squeezed ahead of graduation. Suddenly, it seemed as if the faculty was determined to dump all their knowledge onto departing minds.

That would have been helpful when she was a clueless intern three years ago. But now, after working with Ethan Ramsey on the most complex medical cases and performing hundreds of procedures, she no longer needed to know when arterial was preferred over central venous line placement.

She scarfed down a banana she’d grabbed from the breakroom between patients and wished it was a chocolate bar instead. What possessed her to give up chocolate for Lent?

Max, that’s what. The bastard had dared her, and she’d fallen for his sneaky insinuations like the gullible idiot she was.

Swallowing down the last bite of the slightly mushy fruit, she disposed of the peel and headed toward the north elevator bank. The buzzing of her pager with a message to report to the Diagnostic Team office had her changing directions.

A short while later, she swiped the access card and rushed into the glass-walled office, breathless from her dash up three flights of stairs.

“Whoa. Cake it easy, Valentine,” Tobias Carrick called out in alarm from the conference table, forking up a chocolate cake.

Cassie watched him in bemusement. “Did you just say ‘cake’ it easy?”

“Oops. Must have had cake on my mind.” He toasted her with his fork, going back for seconds.

Cassie shrugged, joining him at the round conference table. “I’m a layer back kind of person, Carrick.”

Tobias grinned wolfishly. “Well, you’re butter than me.”

He saw her staring hungrily at the cake and pushed the plate toward her. “It’s Maureen’s birthday. I managed to confiscate this from the nurses’ lounge— with great difficulty, I might add. If they find out, I’m in dip chip.”

Cassie snorted at the pun. “What’s life without a few whisks, right?”

Tobias chuckled. “A little cheesy, but grate effort. Here, I grabbed two forks.”

Shaking her head, she pushed the plate away. “Thanks, but my brother challenged me to give up something for Lent. In my not-so-infinite wisdom, I picked chocolate.”

“Yogurta be kidding me!” His mouth dropped open. “I didn’t peg you for being religious, especially with Ethan being agnostic.”

“Anything’s pastable.” Cassie laughed, amused at the hypothetical scenario of Ethan going to church with her. “Besides, it’s not about religion——and if you tell my mother I said that, you’re a dirty, rotten liar,” she warned with a steely-eyed look, pretending to crack her knuckles for effect.

“Max just knows how to push my gumdrop buttons, and we made a bet. I’m not giving him the satisfaction of rolling in the dough,” she added with a secret relish.

Tobias raised his eyebrows. “If you’ve given up chocolate, you must feel pretty desserted.”

“Tell you what.” He pushed his chair back and picked up the paper plate. “Consider this a gesture of my friend-chip.”

So saying, he walked out the sliding glass doors and dumped the rest of the cake into the trashcan outside.

“You’re one in a melon, Tobias,” Cassie said, her lips curled in a friendly smile. “Donut let anyone tell you otherwise.”

“And another one bites the crust.” Tobias winked lasciviously, his voice dropping into a familiar flirtatious tone. “Knew my charm would rub off on you one of these days, Cassie. Admit it. I’ve got you wonton more.”

“Oh, beet it, Carrick!” Cassie burst into laughter, throwing her head backward.

Tears gathered at the corners of her eyes as she tried to still the laughter, but it was a losing battle as Tobias joined her, his deeper chuckles mingling with her lighter ones.

When Ethan and Baz Mirani walked into the diagnostic team’s office a few minutes later, they came to a standstill and stared perplexed. The other half of the team was doubled over in their chairs; bodies wracked in uncontrollable laughter.

“Have you noticed how unruly the team has become since Carrick joined us?” Ethan mused, raising an eyebrow as he glanced from Cassie to Tobias.

Baz folded his arms, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Well, we could use a break from the usual grind of life and death.”

“I’ll never understand how one person can cause such chaos,” Ethan shook his head, crossing the carpeted floor to stand at the front of the conference table.

Noticing the others had joined them, Cassie and Tobias slowly collected themselves. Their laughter died down to occasional chuckles as they shared one final amused glance before turning to give their attention to Ethan, the levity of the moment settling into a comfortable workday hum.

Chapter 6

Tobias Carrick didn’t expect to meet his long lost friend turned foe today, certainly not under the humongous roof of the third richest man in America, competing against him for the sake of saving his hospital. Yet, here he was, staring at Ethan Ramsey in flesh and blood. He looks like he hasn’t aged a day, though the beard and glasses make him look more matured than he acts to be.

Hirata and Mirani following Ramsey like puppies as usual. He recognises the other doctor, from their encounter at the deli a few days back. He did not learn her name, but was shocked to see her as a part of one of the most prestigious diagnostic team in the country. A resident in her second year missing out trivial diagnosis like cyanosis, did Edenbrook and Ethan Ramsey forget how to teach?

He was enjoying this little arrangement that Bloom came up with, never missing out on a chance to one-up Ethan Ramsey. But when his “friend” stormed out the heavy wooden doors he was not surprised but disappointed. He was rather shocked when his protege followed him without thinking twice.

Before following Mr. Bloom inside he could see Ramsey and Bose in a heated argument through the glass panels. He was surprised further because in all the years he had known Ethan Ramsey he had never seen an attending talk to him that way, much less a resident, had his “friend” changed that much? His surprise continued when Ramsey came back for a chance to crack this case, but he didn’t let his face show. Does this mere resident have special persuasion powers? He decided to put his head in the game instead, because he was playing to see his “friend” lose.

Chapter 8

The sun shone brightly, the smell of hot dogs and beers engulfing the atmosphere this was one day in a year, Tobias pretends he followed his childhood dream of playing softball professionally. The doctors from both the hospitals mingled about, he had so many people to greet but in the sea of known and unknown people he certainly didn’t expect Ethan Ramsey to be there.

He has been going against Edenbrook for almost half a decade and never in all those years had he ever seen or ever expected the infamous Dr. Ramsey to grace them with his presence. What changed? He thought and almost immediately saw Meera Bose beside Ethan.

She was a decent player he thought, throwing the first pitch and being responsible for Tobias Carrick’s out was enough proof of that. But he couldn’t ignore the small smile at the corner of his “friend’s” lips whenever Bose threw a perfect pitch.

Old habit’s die hard and Tobias thought rubbing the case of Stephanie Hill while grabbing a water was the perfect plan. He raised an eyebrow when the young resident said “paitent care isn’t a game.” Good to know Ramsey passed down his virtues to his residents. But the fire he saw in Bose’s eyes on mentioning her friend’s betrayal mirrored the fire he had witnessed in his own “friend’s” eyes more than ten years ago due to a different betrayal.

The fight had grown heated but when Ethan took a protective stance in front of Meera giving Terrance a death threat Tobias was astounded. He had known this man for a very long time, was Ramsey falling for her? Because he hadn’t seen him this defensive since… before he could finish that thought, chaos broke free.

The final innings could have gone better, but one thing that always set Carrick apart from Ramsey was the ability to accept defeat. He watched as Bose ran towards the Edenbrook clan, her friends and colleague wrapping her up. As he turned to leave he watched Ethan join the crowd his eyes soft on Meera’s browns a playful smile on his lips, hands brushing lightly. Tobias’s earlier suspicion returned and as a diagnostician he thought he had an answer, but as one of Ethan Ramsey’s oldest “friend” he could do with some more evidence.

Chapter 9

Logging into his tablet, Tobias looked suspiciously at the recent activity. Ethan Ramsey, at Kenmore? He didn’t have any ongoing research projects and Ethan is not the type of man who likes to take an afternoon walk around the neighborhood.

“Doctor, the patient is ready for you,” the nurse called. Tobias nodded, opening his new patient chart and getting to work, making a mental note of catching up with Ramsey before he leaves the premises.

Tobias stopped Dr. Simpson in the middle of his presentation, was that Meera Bose? He rushed out of the patient room following her still not believing his eyes. But when he saw Mirani with her he knew something was up. Three members of the Edenbrook diagnostic team cannot be behind enemy lines at the same time co-inccidently. Calling security Tobias makes a run for it.

The two doctors make a narrow escape and he comes out just in time to see his “friend” zoom away from under his nose.

“Well played Ramsey, we’ll get you next time.”

Chapter 11

The news of Senator Ed and and his aide had spread like wildfire. Transfer patients from Edenbrook kept Tobias fairly busy, but he didn’t know why his thoughts drifted back to Meera.

“How was she doing?”

“Did they have any answers at all?”

“Is she not going to make it?”

“How was… how was Ethan doing?”

Tobias found himself choking on his own breath. In need of fresh air, he put down his tablet and took shelter in a supply closet. He doesn’t remember when was the last time he was here. More unpleasant thoughts circled his brain, Tobias punched the door out of frustration and helplessness. The door opened, and Aurora came in, the frustration and helplessness reflected on her face made Tobias decide that it was time to set aside all the age-old differences between him and Ethan and their respective hospitals.

Nothing less than a crowd was formed in front of the patient room. All of Meera’s friends, family and well-wishers stood by her side. All of them dejected and crestfallen. Ethan Ramsey stood at the forefront his heart burdened with melancholy, but too stubborn to show it in his face. Tobias had known his “friend” long enough to see right through the facade.

Tobias straightened his face, “and you won’t be alone.”

Ramsey’s face shifts from shock to thankful in a mili second and Tobias stops him right there. Everyone says their goodbye one by one and follows Baz and June into the lab. Tobias notices his “friend” not making a move.

“Shouldn’t we call Dr. Ramsey?” one of the doctors suggest.

“No. He should be there with her,” Tobias smiled. “This is where he will do the most good. Besides, I know what I am doing.” He flashes his signature smile only to receive an eye roll from Hirata.

Tobias monitored the sodium-potassium level, no this won’t work, he shaked his head. Facing another dead end, he decided its better to take a small break before getting back to work. He exited the lab and walked towards Meera’s room. The corridor lights had been dimmed, he felt like a ghost wandering the halls. He stopped in front of the window, only to see Ethan all suited up, holding Meera as close as he humanly could with the plastic barrier in between them.

He needed no more confirmations. He was sure his “friend” had fallen head over heels for Meera. It had been a long time since he had been this candid with someone, it had been so long since someone had broken all of his walls and reached for his heart and it had been so long since Ethan’s heart had shattered. Tobias was immature back then and partly responsible for what had happened but today he was not going to let that happen a second time. With renewed determination Tobias walked back towards the lab.

Just like Tobias had guessed, Ethan was still there in his hazmat suit helping Meera vomit into a basin when they returned the next morning. The child-like grin on his face on hearing about the antidote was unlike him. Tobias explained the chemistry behind their discovery, expecting atleast a couple questions from Ethan but the absence of that made him realize that he was a changed man. The sheer delight on Ethan Ramsey’s face as he administered the serum was one of a kind. He and Meera locked eyes, a silent understanding between them.

The waiting part was the worst, but once the latest lab results showed no trace of toxin in Bose’s bloodstream the entire team gathered around the patient room. Ethan sprinted through the doors, and Meera flew into his arms, tears breaking free. Ethan looked outside holding Tobias’ gaze for a little longer than necessary, while Tobias returned his signature smirk.

Chapter 17

The rumor mill had a field day with the news that the great Ethan Ramsey had kissed a resident, Meera Bose in an atrium full of people. While the betting pool regarding how long they were dating and whether Meera slept her way to the top were the hottest topic in and around the hospital, Tobias Carrick was just content that his diagnostic skills remained undefeated and he still knew his "friend" through and through.

Author’s Note: Hi, hello. It’s been a crappy week and I’m emotionally/physically exhausted. So here’s some fluff to counter the bad week. This is unedited, so please forgive any mistakes. Hope you like it. 💙

Ethan never got sick. Ever. Despite working in a hospital, surrounded by sick people on a daily basis, Ethan always managed to stay as healthy as possible. He had prided himself on his strong immune system and seemingly inability to fall ill.

Until today, that is. He woke with so much pressure in his sinuses, he thought his head would burst. Getting out of bed was a feat in itself, as his whole body ached. He sniffled as he made his way to the bathroom and nearly jumped at his own reflection: his eyes were puffy, his nose was red, and his posture was significantly slouched. He tried to stand up straight but only groaned as his body protested the movement. Today was going to be long. 

Pushing through, he swallowed a couple of DayQuils with his morning coffee, stuffed some tissues into his pocket, and gave Jenner a pat on the head before sluggishly making his way to work. 

Arriving at the hospital, he noticed the looks of surprise and concern that people gave him as he passed. He didn’t know why; it was just a little cold. It wasn’t like he had grown a second head. He rolled his eyes and continued towards the seventh floor, ignoring everyone he walked past. 

Finally arriving in the Diagnostics Office, he found himself breathing heavier than normal. As he sat at his desk, he attempted to take a deep breath but instead triggered a coughing fit. He grabbed a nearby Kleenex and coughed hard, his body wracking with the movement. He took a deep breath and coughed one last time before his lungs took pity on him and stopped causing him distress. Ethan groaned and dropped his head into his hands. 

“Ethan? You okay, man?” a voice said.

Ethan looked up to find Tobias looking at him with concern. He hadn’t even heard his old friend come in. He nodded and sighed. “Yeah; just a little under the weather today, is all.”

“If you’re not feeling well, you should probably go home,” Tobias suggested. “There’s no point in pushing yourself to further exhaustion.”

Ethan shook his head. “I’m fine; I just need the DayQuil to kick in.”

Tobias pursed his lips then clicked his tongue. “If you say so; Nat’s not gonna be happy to see you like this though.”

“See who like what?” the aforementioned doctor asked as she walked into the room. Natalie looked to Tobias first then Ethan, her eyes widening. “Woah, are you okay?” She quickly made her way over to Ethan and rested the back of her hand to his forehead. 

He weakly brushed her hand away. “I’m fine, Nat. Just a little under the weather.”

“I’d say more than a little; you look terrible!” She exclaimed. He frowned and she gave him a small smile. “Sorry babe, but it’s true.”

“I also walked in on him having a serious coughing fit a moment ago,” Tobias said. Ethan glared at Tobias but the latter deliberately avoided eye contact with him, choosing to look at his phone instead.

Natalie gently placed her hand on Ethan’s cheek and turned his face towards her so she could look at him. He watched as her eyes scanned his face and knew she was trying to figure out how sick he really was. He both loved and hated how well she knew him sometimes. “You should go home, Ethan.”

“I’m fine,” he argued. “I already took some meds, they just need to kick in.”

She pulled out her stethoscope and pointed it at him threateningly. “Go home or I’ll admit you.”

Tobias coughed back a chuckle and Ethan raised an eyebrow. “You do remember I’m your boss, right?”

She nodded as she put the headset into her ears and placed the cold chestpiece against his chest, making him jump. “You’re my boss, my boyfriend, and now, my patient. Breathe in.”

“Nat, this is ridiculous--” he argued but stopped when she glared at him.

“Breathe. In.” she repeated. Shaking his head in reply, he did as she said and found taking a breath was difficult. He fought the cough he could feel bubbling up but to no avail; thankfully, however, this cough was not nearly as violent as the last one. Nat pulled the chestpiece away and nodded. “Yeah, you’re a mess. You’re going home.” He opened his mouth to protest but she held up her hand. “Don’t argue with me on this. You’re in no state to work, let alone be around other sick patients.” 

She pulled out a prescription pad, scribbled something down then turned to Tobias and handed it to him. “Tobias, can you send this down to the pharmacy so they can get it filled? I’ll pick it up when it’s ready.”

He nodded and took the form. “Sure thing.” He turned to Ethan and smiled sympathetically. “Get better soon, Ethan. Nat’s not as fun to be around when she’s in charge.”

Natalie rolled her eyes and smirked as Tobias made his way out of the office. She turned back to Ethan and softened her gaze as he frowned and sniffled. She caressed his cheek with her hand. “I love you.”

His frown shifted to a small smile. “I love you too.” He sneezed.

“You see why I’m sending you home, right?”

He sighed and nodded. “Yeah; I do. I hate being sick. I always feel so useless.”

“You are still human, my love; and humans get sick from time to time. It’s normal.” She crouched in front of him and took his hands in hers. “I’ll come over after my shift and make you some soup, okay?”

“You don’t have to do that--” he weakly protested.

She shook her head. “I want to; let me take care of you, baby. Please.”

Sighing, he nodded and stood, bringing Natalie up with him. He reached for her but hesitated as he didn’t want to make her ill. She smiled at him and stood on her tiptoes to place a gentle kiss on his forehead. “Go home and get some rest. I’ll be there in a couple hours.”

He nodded. Sighing, he left the hospital and made his way home, his head in a fog for most of the journey. After safely arriving home, he changed into some more comfortable clothing, with the intention of getting some work done on his laptop; but the bed looked just so inviting. I guess I could lay down for a few minutes, he thought. Gently, he laid on the bed and closed his eyes. Five minutes is all I need. Within seconds, his body relaxed and he began to emit quiet snores, work completely forgotten.

Several Hours Later

Ethan woke to the muffled sounds of the television and someone shuffling around in his kitchen. He groaned and got out of bed, padding his way to the source of the noise. As he exited the bedroom, he was greeted with the various sights of onion, tomato, and meat that were cooking on the stovetop. Unfortunately, due to his stuffed sinuses, he could barely smell anything but he presumed it was heavenly.

“Hi,” a voice said. He turned his attention to the source and smiled as Natalie approached him, throwing a hand towel over her shoulder. “How are you feeling?”

“Not great,” he replied, truthfully.

She gently brought his forehead to her lips as she judged his temperature. She hummed as she pulled away. “You’re warm.” She turned around and grabbed a small box out of her purse then handed it to him. He looked it over appraisingly, realizing this must be the prescription Nat wrote out earlier. “Take one of these now; it should lower your fever and help you feel better. Go get comfortable, the soup will be ready soon.”

“You didn’t have to do all this, Nat,” he began.

“Of course I did,” she said, cutting him off. She rested a gentle hand on his back and guided him towards the sofa. “Now, relax and get comfy. I’m almost done.”

Ethan did as she said, plopping down on the couch. He opened the prescription box and took the prescribed medication as Jenner trotted over and rested his head in his master’s lap. Ethan patted the pup’s head soothingly, giving him a tired smile. “Has she been giving you orders today, too?” he asked.

“Unlike you, Jenner is a spectacular patient,” Nat answered from the kitchen. “He’s been very good and even earned himself a few treats for being so good.”

“Did you, now?” Ethan mused, looking down at Jenner. The pup, none the wiser to the conversation happening about him, simply wagged his tail and gave his best doggy smile to his owner. Ethan chuckled. “Good dog.”

Taking the remote, he flipped to the Classic Film channel and sunk lower onto the couch. He felt his body begin to shiver and grabbed the nearby throw blanket, covering himself with it. “God, this is awful. I hate being sick.”

“I know, my love,” Nat soothed. “But the meds I gave you should help. They just need time to kick in. And,” she walked over and placed a bowl of hot soup in front of him on the coffee table, “this should help too. It’s an old family recipe of Dani’s. It works wonders.”

“Speaking from experience?” he asked, leaning over, letting the steam from the hot bowl wash over his face. 

Nat nodded. “Yep. Both Dani and I got the flu within a week of each other when we were still living together. She made this soup for us and we both felt better almost immediately. I’m convinced it’s got magic powers.”

Ethan chuckled. “I’ll take your word for it.” He pulled the coffee table a little closer to the couch and smiled at Nat. “Thank you for making this.”

“You’re welcome,” she said, returning his smile. “Now, eat. I’ll be right there.”

Lacking the energy to argue, he did as she said, bringing a spoonful of the hot soup to his lips. Within minutes, Ethan felt the hot liquid warm up his body, which had been starting to feel cold. Nat smiled as she joined him with her own bowl, nodding in approval as he steadily ate. 

Nat filled him in on what he missed at work while they ate, which hadn’t been much, thankfully. Their new patient wouldn’t be admitted for another week so the team had just done some prep and research today but nothing else beyond that. Ethan asked a few questions as Nat explained but otherwise, remained quiet through their conversation. Nat raised an eyebrow, suspicious. “You’re being unusually cooperative. What’s the matter?”

He chuckled and placed his near empty bowl on the coffee table. “Nothing. I’m just feeling a little drained, is all.”

“Mm, I’m not surprised. When you get sick, it hits you like a freight train.”

He frowned. “Thanks.”

Nat chuckled and settled deeper into the couch. She opened her arms and gestured towards herself with her fingers. “C’mere.”

Needing no further invitation, Ethan maneuvered himself into Nat’s embrace, covering them both with the throw blanket he had still been wearing. As he relaxed in her arms, he wondered aloud, “Aren’t you worried about getting sick?”

She hummed. “Nah. But even if I was, it wouldn’t stop me from being here.” She ran her fingers through his hair. “I would take care of you, anytime.”

He looked up at her and smiled. “Thank you, Nat. You’re too good for me.”

“No, I’m not,” she replied, smiling. “We’re just the right amount of good for each other.” She kissed his head. “Can I get you anything else?”

He shook his head, tightening his hold around her midsection. “No. Just you.”

“I’m right here,” Nat reassured. 

“Love you,” Ethan murmured, his eyes fluttering closed.

“I love you too. Now, rest.” She gently leaned over and took the remote from the coffee table.

“Don’t watch the next episode of Bake Off without me,” Ethan said, his voice drowsy.

Nat chuckled. “I wouldn’t dare. When you’re feeling better, we’ll pick up where we left off.” When he didn’t respond, she glanced down to find that Ethan had fallen asleep. Smiling to herself, she turned on an old favorite film of hers and watched, while running her fingers up and down Ethan’s back. 

It would be a few more days before Ethan was back in top shape; but Nat took care of him the entire time. From bringing him food to ensuring he rested instead of working, Nat took better care of Ethan than he had ever done himself when he had been sick in the past. He’d never been so well taken care of before, and it made him all the more grateful to have her in his life. He’d always hoped she’d take over the DT for him one day; and after the way she cared for him, he knew the team would be in the best possible hands. And so would he.

Casey is listening to this and dancing (really badly) all around their townhome. She's bopping around thinking she looks soooo sexy, and it's kind of not... but it's so damn adorable, she gets the desired reaction from Tobias anyway. Like when doesn't she get that reaction from him anyway? lol

Tobias is a huge Frank Ocean fan, and this is one of his go-to songs for when he's feeling a little 😏😏😏. I mean, it's Valentine's Day every day in the Carrick household, so they're gonna go big or go home on the actual day. (And yes, of course it works! lol)

Trystan / Carolina:

Carolina has been trying to introduce Trystan to Latin music, and since Luis Miguel was one of her father's favorites, he's one of hers, as well. This song isn't a typical Valentine's Day song because it's about longing and heartache, but that's kind of Carolina's vibe, even when she is madly in love.

Kaycee is never leaving her Taylor era, and she really doesn't care that this song was written for Joe (Joe who???), and this little song reminds exemplifies her relationship with Ethan, so it's definitely on replay this Valentine's Day.

So, this ties into the Valentine's Day fic I'm finishing off for these two. But Ethan found her really likes this album, and this song in particular has a special place in his heart. I think it will become a Valentine's Day standard in their home.

The sound of the curtain being shoved aside wouldn’t be so offensive on a typical morning. It wasn’t a particularly loud or harsh sound, but then again, this wasn’t a typical morning. Tobias groaned audibly as he rolled to the side, forgetting he had slept on the sofa. He was quickly reminded as he crashed to the floor, a trail of curses falling from his lips.

“What the hell are you doing, Ramsey?”

“Joining the land of the living... it’s nearly noon.”

“What does it matter? It’s our day off.”  Tobias shaded his eyes. “Would you close that damn thing!”

Ethan reluctantly pulled the curtains back with an exasperated sigh. “I didn’t realize you were such a lightweight, Carrick!”

“Lightweight?” Tobias protested. “A, I had a lot more to drink than you. B, I didn’t come home and crash... no, I crashed directly into the lovely Linda... or was it Laura? Lydia!! Lydia... I think...  where did she go, anyway?”

“Oh, I don’t know,” Ethan rolled his eyes. “I guess you don’t recall how mortified Lisa was when I walked in on the two of you... crashing... on the couch.”

Tobias rolled on his back, staring at the ceiling thoughtfully. “Oh, yeah...” he droned as realization washed over him. “I vaguely remember her grabbing her things and rushing out.”

Ethan chuckled as his eyes fell on a red lace thong draped over the corner of an armchair. Lifting it gently between his thumb and forefinger, he threw them in Tobias’s direction.

“Not all of her things. It looks like she left a souvenir behind.”

Tobias shifted to sit up, a proud grin morphing on his lips. “Souvenirs... not a bad idea...we have four years of adventures ahead... maybe we should start a memory box for all our...encounters.”

“Yeah, I’m going to pass,” Ethan laughed as he fell into the armchair. “Wait...” he stiffened, “is it safe to sit here?”

“Oh, yeah. If memory serves, we never made it over there.”

“That’s a relief! As I was saying, I think I’ll exercise a little more... discretion in my extracurricular activities.”

“Discretion is overrated. And not for nothin’, Ramsey, but you’ll have to have extracurricular activities before worrying about how you’ll handle them.”  

His roommate’s smug expression raised ire and put him on the defensive. “Perhaps I’m just discrete enough that you’re unaware of them.”

“Nah,” Tobias chuckled. “I notice everything. For example, I’ve noticed how you’ve been eyeing Vincenza in Dr. Phelp’s class.”

“I have not!”

“You haven’t?” Tobias raised a brow. “Shit! If you’re not interested in Chenza, that means she’s fair game... you don’t mind if I...”

“Cut the shit, Carrick!”

And there was the smug expression again. “I knew it. So... what’s your plan?”

Ethan sat silently for several moments before surrendering. “I’m meeting her for brunch; it’s a study thing.”

“Right,” Tobias leered, “That’s what they call it... studying.”

“It is!” Ethan laughed, stepping up to grab his jacket. “And I have to get going, or I’m going to be late.”

“Wouldn’t want that,” Tobias smiled, rolling back to his side.

“Are you going to get up?” Ethan asked.

“Sure, in another two or three hours. I should be fully recovered by then.”

Ethan shook his head with a laugh as he walked out the door. It was going to be an interesting four years.
