Holy hell. This was soooo good. Hasn't really entertained such a thought until now, but damn it if that isn't one that's going to toss around my head for a while. Talk about major stress relief for both parties involved. Let's be honest here, the man needs it more often than he probably gets it. He works hard. Even those small stolen moments are worth it. Yep, definitely gonna be thinking about Andover throughout tomorrow....

It's a shame my boss is a library director and not the proprietor of one of those jampacked used book shops where nobody ever buys anything because she clearly just wants to accumulate things en masse but doesn't really want anyone to use them and doesn't take care of them. This includes telling us we can't circulate the juvenile fiction collection because the titles are "priceless" and "irreplaceable" (they are not. they're Newberry award winner paperbacks) but she doesn't care that the shelf is pointed straight toward a bank of huge windows and the books have been cooked to the point their covers are disintegrating. Also I spent several weeks this year explaining vinegar syndrome to her and getting it through her head that the microfilm she hoards in the warmest rooms in the building is actively self-destructing, and when I finally convinced her to let me weed the most damaged acetate and reassured her that other institutions like the historical societies do a better job of preserving newspapers anyway, a community college does not need thousands of reels our students are not using, she very earnestly asked me if I thought the historical societies knew about this "dangerous problem". Yes I promise the historical societies know about vinegar syndrome.

#I'm not saying every non-archivist needs to know about acetate degradation #but if you're going to hoard thousands of reels of microfilm you probably should #but that's the thing... she doesn't CARE if all the shit she hoards falls to pieces in her clutches #all she cares about is that she can have it #before you ask yes I'm pretty sure she's a clinical hoarder #I've never been to her house but a former coworker has and said as much #I live in fear one day I will find silver nitrate in the supply closet where she hides things that got weeded but she can't bear to part wi #th

I beg people in the MW to think very carefully when they talk about mental illness and physical disability cause it’s not as straight forward and easy to diagnose/depict as you think…

#it’s less I hate the analysis more so the way people talk about these real mental disorders in really demonizing ways #like there aren’t people who leads normal lives #and are well adjusted with these disorders like only people like them can do shit Jimmy does and it’s in a really fear mongering way like #please be careful with how you handle those subject matter not every bad character needs a reason why some people are just like Jimmy no #no clear diagnosis or if ur gonna pick something you don’t need to be on the apd spectrum to be narcissistic it’s just like I wish people #would understand that like people like him just exist he would not be diagnosed as either in like a clinical setting cause it’s more than #just hitting the boxes plus like it’s stated that Jimmy still choice to do what he was doing #like a big thing with sort of violent apd personalities is they don’t show any regret or remorse at all for these actions and he does it’s #born from self preservation but to this extent to classify he’d have to still not feel anything like it’s just a touchy thing and we are #bordering on the same fear mongering people had about schizophrenia or bpd #like I just feel like he def has something but it’s not named or define for a reason like he practically fits everything and it’s likely i #intentional so you can give him that excuse but it’s likely he’s just like that like some people are cruel with no sort of neurosis like hes #def delusional but sociopaths and psychopaths tend to have a better grip on reality than he does #did and more factors point to himself than anything going on in his head #this is just the psych in me but pls be super careful with how you discuss mental illnesses cause it’s still his choice to do the things he #mouthwashing

Fear… a little death that consumes you. From the common to the abstract, everyone is scared of something. I was always taught you had to live with it, accept it. I watched as others fought back. Agoraphobia, nyctophobia, hydrophobia, acrophobia. There are literally thousands of classified phobias. I figured out a way to give my patients a fresh start without the inhibitions and restrictions their phobias had placed in their lives. Total immersive exposure therapy, that's where I went… pushed to the edge of science and sensory deprivation. We had the technology to find a cure all along, but everyone else was blind to it. Smarter men than me all failed, but not me. My agenda was pure, and I figured out the key hiding in plain sight, which they all had overlooked, the amygdala, the portion of the brain which feels fear. Everyone else had danced around it and treated it like something sacred, but I took a slightly different approach. The amygdala also acts as a kind of projector in which the signal can easily be received and, most of all, bounced back. It was working. Round after round, I was fighting fear and winning. Some of my colleagues tried to debunk my theories, calling me insane, dangerous, outrageous, but they were just jealous. But something, something went wrong.

Dr. Antover thought he found a cure for fear. What he really did was open a gate.
