So it occurred to me that I never fully explained what happened in this scene that I drew for fe3h oc week last year.

(cw blood injury death body horror and maybe toxic family dynamics?)

After a supernatural attack wiped out Annwen Village and left it infested with Demonic Beasts, its sole survivor Kitt was brought to Garreg Mach by Seteth and Flayn. There, they spent several weeks in a catatonic and unresponsive state under Flayn's care. Upon closer examination, a sizable fragment of a Crest Stone was found embedded in their neck, bearing the obscure Crest of Gwyn.

To Seteth and Flayn, it appeared as though they lacked a compatible Crest. In truth, the Crest of Gwyn has the ability to render itself undetectable even when being used, allowing its bearers to live among the ordinary people unnoticed. Seteth and Flayn, not knowing this, sought to imbue the Crest of Gwyn by infusing Kitt with their own Nabatean blood. Since the Crests of Gwyn and Cichol originated from siblings, there was a chance, however risky, that their blood would be compatible with Kitt's.

Part of their motive was that they feared Kitt was at risk of transforming of a Demonic Beast, since the Crest Stone fragment could not be safely removed from their spine. Their other motive was that Seteth, Flayn, and Rhea wished to revive the consciousness of the Capricious One, who had suffered a miscarriage of justice in the ancient past and supposedly died in both rancor, madness and agony. While Seteth was apprehensive, Rhea believed that past wrongs could be mended and that one of their own could be restored to wholeness. It was Flayn's fervent agreement that swayed him.

More secretly, it would also serve as a trial run of Rhea's designs on Byleth and the Crest of Flames.

In a ritual that made use of Seteth and Flayn's blood and Kitt's unresponsive body, they managed to awaken... something. Something horrifying - something that caused Kitt to transform for the first time. Imbued with the madness and rage and suffering of the Capricious one, Kitt attacked both Seteth and Flayn, wounding them both. This forced Seteth to take up arms and maim the transformed Kitt.

Rhea, deeming the whole endeavor a failure, quickly convened with Seteth and Flayn. Terrified of the wrath of their ancient adversary, they discussed burying the whole thing before it got worse and sealing up the newly awakened creature in the deepest reaches of the Holy Mausoleum before it could escape. But to their shock, Kitt had already recovered, their monstrous trappings gone and wounds healed. They appeared as a normal human being, walking among the unwitting students and residents of Garreg Mach, conversing and laughing and integrating themselves as if nothing had happened. From a distance, Seteth, Flayn, and Rhea could only look on, confused and horrified and unable to stop them.

To this day, Kitt is determined to live an ordinary and a carefree life as another resident of Garreg Mach. Rhea and her Inner Circle can only watch upon them carefully, limiting their ability to wander freely while always remaining cognizant of their ability to transform and strike back at moment's notice should the leash grow too tight. And while Kitt is seemingly happy to behave for now, past events both ancient and modern have erased all possibility of any true trust between them.

So how does the relic Carnwennan play into this? When Kitt was recovered from the ruins of Annwen, they were found with an ordinary dagger that they clutched onto for dear life. It came with them to Garreg Mach. While confiscated briefly, it always managed to somehow find its way back into Kitt's hands.

When examining it, Seteth and Flayn were unable to agree as to whether it was a weapon, a tool, or a ritual implement. It had an elusive and mercurial shape that seemed to change, or appear take up different appearances depending on who examined or attempted to use it.

Similar its corresponding Crest, the relic known as the Illusory Knife Carnwennan, has the ability to disguise itself and suppress its arcane abilities. Much like any other relic, its true power can only be tapped by one bearing the Crest of Gwyn. As such, Kitt has little trouble using it as it was meant to be - an instrument of both retribution and mercy.
