Mclusky and Ganser at Baby’s All Right

The trio known as Mclusky returned to New York City faster than many of us expected them to by booking an underplay show (courtesy of Saint Vitus presents) at Baby’s All Right on Sunday, March 24, 2024. For their final US tour date, they were joined by Chicago’s Ganser, who joined the tour after Mclusky’s concert at Warsaw.

I learned about the show on March 8th at 10:02AM thanks to an email alert from Oh My Rockness that I set up about two decades ago.* Once that notification hit my inbox, I quickly opened the message and immediately bought tickets via Dice.fm. I then proceeded to text (or DM) everyone I could think of who I knew that went to the Warsaw show to let them know we were getting another round at a more intimate venue before the band returned home. The concert sold out well in advance, which I anticipated as Baby’s has about a third of the capacity of Warsaw. I hadn’t originally planned to have a three concert run to close out March, but thanks to SPRINTS on Friday, Kim Gordon on Saturday night (photos of that available here), and Mclusky now on Sunday, I couldn’t see myself not attending all three.

Kicking off the night at 8:30PM were Ganser (of Chicago, IL) who I’ve been wanting to see for some time now and was very excited to discover on the morning of Thursday, March 21st that they were added to the Dice ticketing page for the show. I had a conflict for their previous NYC performance at Market Hotel and I was overjoyed that I would finally see them live. The band lived up to my expectations and I’m so glad I could finally pick up a copy of their newest EP at the merch table since I previously purchased a digital version via Bandcamp.

Mclusky’s setlist was pretty much the same as Warsaw’s but we also received a bonus song that wasn’t listed. Back on the 7th, we heard “That Man Will Not Hang,” and last night we were given “No Covers” a B-side to their “To Hell With Good Intentions” single which can also be found on their Mcluskyism compilation. Falco declared there would be no encore because they are not French. Before their final song, Damien told the crowd that all three members will be celebrating their birthdays soon and a cake with candles was brought to the stage to commemorate their upcoming birthdays happening within ten days of each other.

Thank you to both Ganser and Mclusky for playing, posing, and for returning to NYC. Also, thank you to the extremely kind person to my left up front who generously handed me a copy of Mclusky’s setlist after they finished their final song.

*Other acts that I set up ages ago that are yielding alerts present day are Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Les Savy Fav, PJ Harvey, CSS, Pretty Girls Make Graves, The Murder City Devils, and The Hives. Much older me appreciates younger me doing that favor and also for having pretty good taste in music.

SNK final season episode 1 thoughts

So I really enjoyed that!  I didn’t love the whole Marley arc when it was coming out in the manga so that was a pleasant surprise.  I think the anime was much more effective in conveying the mood and terror that comes with war, as well as the cruelty of the Marley side (the scene of the man kissing his locket, or those poor people bagged up on the blimp-- ugh it was so horrible.  I kept imagining Erwin if he’d been born on the wrong side of the wall, pressed up against a trench and knowing there was no way out, that he was about to die for nothing ughhh).   The tension was so effective, the hopelessness of the situation, the racism, the xenophobia, the prejudice-- *chefs kiss*.

Zeke as usual is horrible and gross XD, I actually loved the little throat clear before he did his scream, a very human moment.  It was great seeing Pieck and Gaillard too, and Reiner looked so cool!  I guess we also know that Zeke uses a knife to transform which I’m not sure we knew before.  I also loved it when Zeke was like ‘wuh?’ when they were about to shoot him from the boats.  He never learns he’s not invulnerable!  He’s so deliciously hateable. 

I’ve never been much of a Gabi fan but I did think she was fun, her VA did a great job.  And I loved seeing Colt, he was one of my favs during the Marley arc (since he kinda looks like a young Wins, sue me XD).

What else... I thought the summary at the beginning when Falco hit his head was a bit heavy handed and clunky exposition but it was aright.  I loved the contrast of the clear, raw power of the titans, but also seeing that the other military powers are certainly catching up so that the age of the titan is ending.

As usual the music was great, I think Mappa is doing a really good job so far with the animation  The CGI was fine and worked well.  The opening was strangely dark and haunting, the war imagery kinda fucked me up a bit.   I imagine they’ll change that when they get out of the Marley arc.  Ending song I didn’t even bother watching the whole thing. 

Jean cameo at the end was fun, and I loved seeing Pieck’s human form in the preview.

1. babel by mumford & sons. i felt like i entered a portal and found another world when i first listened to this album because it was exactly the type of music i was searching for at this time. i genuinely love every single song. i haven’t listened to it in a long time and i really need to change that!

2. the platinum collection by queen. i thought long about which queen album to pick but i just couldn’t decide on a favourite, so i decided to just go with their best of, haha. it’s queen, what more do i need to say?

3. goodbye yellow brick road by elton john. elton john is my favourite singer and even though my favourite song by him isn’t on here, this is still my favourite album. the cover art alone is fantastic! i decided to go with the ‘super deluxe’ version because it also includes some fantastic live recordings.

4. at folsom prison by johnny cash. there’s not a single song by him that i dislike, so i could have picked any of his albums, but this one includes some of my favs and it’s simply iconic.

5. 60 by falco. a fantastic best of that came out on what would have been his 60th birthday. i adore him and remain being fascinated by his talent and genius.

6. die unendlichkeit by tocotronic. i only discovered my love for this band this year and this album blew me away. so chill but meaningful. and i love the cover! simple but very pretty.

7. the black parade by my chemical romance. a very honourable mention for what i would describe “the album of my teenage years”. i rarely listen to mcr these days, but back in the day they kept me going, and this is just a wonderful concept album from start to finish and will always have a place in my heart.
