Mad Ramblings #1: New aesthetic/literature idea. Pseudo-Solarpunk or Faux-Solarpunk.
1: Pseudo Solarpunk: So the idea came from for for designing “eco-friendly living”. But usually they come from corporations or governments. But mostly there made for fixing or making things better. But most of the time they never fully promise or they never get made. Most of the time there just made for looks. Examples include Dubais’s “sustainable” city or Saudia Arabias the Line City. There plenty of more examples. But I recommend looking into Hanzi Freinacht article We Must Reclaim Solarpunk from Authoritarian Regimes it’s really good and its what inspired me to come up with this idea.
So basically imagine a setting for a dystopia where the solarpunk is just aesthetics and no practical use. Or can only be used by a select few, aka the elite while the lower classes suffer. Basically the modern day but worse. Also add some authoritarianism into it and you got pseudo solarpunk or faux solarpunk. I might make another post probably going in much more detail, but no promises.
It’s currently 1:48 am, decided to write this before I forget it, feel free to do what ever with this idea.

BENDING HORIZONS IS DONE!
my local group is done!!! short descriptions r below cut!!!! im so so excited guys omg. please ask abt them [also pls rb this took ages and im rlly proud of them!] toyhouse link here that also has full individual images!!! point out ur faves! im so excited to present them to you all [please like them please like them please l- /lh]
without further ado, here we go! in seniority [and image] order
Plunging Flows of Ash [PFA] - he/him [woman!!] He’s definitely winning his senior of the cycle award! He’s been pretty depressed and poorly functioning from the jump, but would often rely on his partner, Sparks, for help and support. When she’s in her darkest hour, and his privileges as senior are needed, he consistently fails to deliver despite her constant aid in return… and after the mass ascension, he just falls off the face of the earth, sleeping through his own depression even as his dysfunctional group desperately needs him. The catalyst for everything- as he fractured his group in two with his actions and fails to rise to their needs, and he has a chronic inability to accept his own wrongdoings and the fact things have changed. Associated Slugcat: The Colorburst Countless Swirling Sparks [CSS] - she/any Well known among iterators for her many, many methods of iteration and other inventions, Sparks was built with an unusually large [and haphazard] structure that she uses to its full advantage. Always with countless screens pulled up around her, always on some project, eating up her own escapism. She was failed by her creators long ago, but is so desperate to see her fellow iterators happy she keeps pushing on. In lieu of Ash, she has risen to a faux senior status - though lacking any powers to enforce her position. Only about half of the group [Ochre, Chimes, and Aurora] answer to her with any respect of authority- she has not been able to reach the others. Her resentment for her situation with her former lover is festering, and may explode violently once things go awry… Associated Slugcat: The Brainiac
Erupting Maw [EM] - she/her She’s fucking crazy!!! Worshiped as a god by her colony, she has not coped with their loss well. Originally seeking to replace the void left by their departure, she created purposed organisms to inhabit her city and later her can… but watching them rip eachother apart was simply so much more cathartic. She has full control! Her ego and disdain for other iterators as lowly in comparison only grows. Over the cycles, her can has become notorious for having some of the most deadly creatures. She’s an expert of bioengineering… but is the danger in seeking her aid worth it? Associated Slugcat: The Gladiator
Budding Ochre Opportunities [BOO] - she/flor Based on solarpunk aesthetics, flors city and can truly is a delight! With a colony full of roof gardens and brilliant colors, she herself has taken to turning her puppet chamber into a garden. Kind and compassionate, though cutting and assertive, she has made peace with her situation as an iterator and is just trying to live a good life. As flor adds to flors collection, she doesn’t consider any of it may posit a danger to her structure. But she would be at peace with that, too, if it were to occur. The only question is if those who care about her, such as her dearest Chimes, would be. Associated Slugcat: The Recon
Resonant Chimes [RC] - he/him He’s really just chilling, hanging out. No secret problems here, no deep-seated depression over the loss of his colony that he hangs onto, no karma flowers being poured into his puppet coolant just to feel something, none of that! Collecting music, friends with slugcats and scavs alike, having a good time. He’s surprisingly intelligent and has his morals more sorted than just about anyone here, but he’s held back by general apathy and his losses. Maybe, so many cycles detached from their creators, he won’t have to worry about losing anyone again. As long as he drinks the tea, he doesn’t have to think about it, and can pull himself closer to those below who left him. Associated Slugcat: The Gardener
Reaching for Caged Starlight [RCS] - she/it/ast Frustrated endlessly, as most iterators are, by being locked in a box, she’s determined to put an end to this. Not by ascension, though. She’s determined to free them from their cans- allow an escape from this maze. Ast wants to remove the puppet from the umbilical, in a manner where they don’t lose themself completely. Much easier said than done! Its undoing, however, is its cautious and methodical nature. She is too light on her feet to simply dare and cut the wire, let alone having the experience to snap the mechanical arm entrapping her. But, she has all the time in the world, and she will one day see the stars they made her mocking name after. They’ll all see. Ast will get there, by any cost necessary, even if her fellow iterators are disposable to this goal. Associated Slugcat: The Seamstress
A Glittering Aurora [AGA] - she/he Need some gossip? He’s your guy, all right! She burns her endless time away on global chats, basking in the amusement and the knowledge. A bit of a nuisance to her own local group, as she simply can not keep a secret, but… what happens when technology degrades, the message board is silent, he no longer can block out his circumstances,,, and the drama reaches a bit too close to home? Associated Slugcat: The Copycat Wandering Whispers [WW] - they/them A very quiet, lonely iterator, Whispers strays to themself. Only allowed to speak to their fellow iterators for shipments, or, occasionally, their senior for guidance, there were few connections for them besides to the one who vanished off the face of the earth. With their personality thoroughly destroyed by the iron fist of their colony, they simply… quietly observe. But they may hear something they’re not supposed to, and, desperate for a replacement for their mentor, lead themself astray. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and they will glimpse the void in the end and take the plunge. Associated Slugcat: The Mercy

Trying to figure out what is and is not real medicine when
you don't speak the local language
about 80% of products, some of which are real medicine, have a picture of a plant on them
you are in Germany, a land of faux solarpunk (fauxlarpunk?) elf larpers who would rather rely on coal and herbs than nuclear and pharmaceuticals
Is extraordinarily difficult. Or actually mostly just time consuming
#I can't remember if I already made this post or if I just thought about it#but the formatting/word choice is more fun on this one

I WANT MOAR: Rasputin and his zombies, please :D
(From this ask meme!)
"More double-dipping?!" I ask in faux-outrage, because you know that Rasputin is my other beloved baby ♥
So Aud knows this but I don't think anyone else reading this would -- He was originally a character created for an RP that never ended up happening, so I repurposed him for the other NaNo project I started in 2005 before I realized that trying to write two at once was an exercise in insanity. I got to it in 2006 and wrote it as a serial web novel, Zombies In The Spring, which started out as fantasy comedy and ended up a sprawling, unfocused mess that weighed in at almost 150k words.
But I still loved my weird little necromancer and his weird little necromancer family (they're all very Addams Family inspired) and I wrote and roleplayed them with Aud and developed them. Over time I split off a biiiiig chunk of the worldbuilding for the backstory of Absolution, then warmed up to the idea of moving Rasputin and his city away from a gaslamp fantasy world and into the modern/near future solarpunk fantasy world Absolution exists in. And then I was at loose ends without a story for him, but after a lot of thinking and borrowing a flavor idea from @bleaksqueak, I came up with a more focused and less... cartoonish job for him than creating flesh golems for manual labor, worked out a sketch of his culture (partially inspired by DA's Nevarra, but "What if a death-focused culture was presented as joyful and caring, not grim and icky"), and from that realized that his whole thing of ethical reanimation could lend itself to him having to solve a murder mystery.
It's still cooking -- one major component I'm missing is the who and why of the murderer, which is kind of important!

I also personally blame steampunk for softening the word "punk" to just mean "style". Cyberpunk was called that because it was "cyber" as in the cutting edge of technology and "punk" as anti-authority rebellion. Very specifically, it was anti-capitalist because of the message against megacorporations having unchecked power over culture and people's lives (glad that warning was heeded *eyeroll*)
Then computers took a slightly different turn that cyberpunk predicted so a lot of it feels more "retro-neon" than "five minutes in the future"...and along comes a new subgenre about faux-Victorian steam-based advanced technology and someone thought "Hey, it's like cyberpunk but steam! Let's call it 'steampunk'!" And it became a genre all about the fashion with characters hobnobbing with famous people and the wealthy and nobility and taking fantastic adventures on expensive airships - y'know, the exact opposite of anything "punk".
Then "-punk" started getting used as a suffix to mean "fashion in the style of". Dieselpunk, solarpunk, atompunk, etc. etc. Fuck, I saw a TTRPG about being literal punk rockers in the late 1970s rebelling against the cops labeled (not by the designers) as "punkpunk".
Punk is rebellion. Punk is DIY. Punk is community organizing and collective action. Punk is not a goddamn fashion label.
PS. Goth and Emo both spawned from the punk scene so all of the above applies there too.
Actually I'll never forgive Punk Rave and Killstar and fast fashion brands for tricking people into thinking that being goth or punk or emo is expensive. Babygirl the only goth brand names you need to know are Rit, Good Will, Etsy, and Studs and Spikes, we used to shove safety pins through our ears and then they started selling earrings that look like safety pins for 15.99. We used to dye thrifted wedding dresses black and they started selling gothic gowns for 300 bucks. We used to put studs on boots we found in the back of the good will and they started making Demonias. DIY or die wasn't perfect it can be exclusionary to disabled people but whatever the fuck we've got going on right now is so much worse. It's not any more inclusive to the disabled and it is exclusionary to the people who made punk, to the people who made goth, to the people who made emo. If you've got the funds and you don't want to do diy pay someone else to do it for you but please let it be a small artist or a friend not some guy in a suit who's made it his business to gentrify punk. You can turn flats into platforms with flipflops, hotglue and gumption don't let anyone tell you different.

World Building | The History of the World
List of Sri Lankan Prime Ministers
Since this world building project is rooted in real life, the history of the world closely follows that of our own. However, this section will mainly focus on what exactly incited the "present" of the film and what that means for the future.
The Deep Past
Sri Lanka remained under colonial rule beginning from the 16th century all the way until the mid-20th. After the country gained independence in 1948, the country made a collective decision to retouch on that which they had lost during the colonial rule. Yes, the colonials brought about things that were very useful such as city and road infrastructure, the industrial revolution and valuable exports such as tea, however they did not account for the Western centric thinking that seeped into the country as a result of centuries of colonisation.
The first prime minister of Sri Lanka, Mr. D.S Senanayake, was a man who recognised this. So, he called for a nation-wide reform of these systems. This resulted in a domino effect that reformed the country of Sri Lanka as the people knew it. Education and learning were returned to a more hands-on approach, a larger focus on spirituality began as a result of reconnecting with the history and culture of the country, traditions and art were revived. In a sense, Sri Lanka was going through it's own faux-renaissance. However, it was not only art that was being developed at the time, but new technology as well. This eventually led into the avenue of renewable sources of energy.
Sustainable development had always been apart of Sri Lankan culture, which already utilised hydropower and windpower technology. It was only logical that in the early 2000s, they finally turned to solar power. However, in order to create a Solar society, the production of solar cells needed to be reliant on an almost abusive cycle of industrial production. During this time, more emphasis was placed on the common man's hard work; essentially, work and working with fellow Sri Lankan were prioritised over all else. Whoever worked the hardest reaped the most benefits.
Fast forward to the present day, the world becomes far more advanced due to the vast amounts of developments caused by a society motivated to work the hardest that they can. Income tax was collected and used for the benefit of public systems such as transport, roads, and other convenient goods and services down to the simplest of things; purchasing items at the grocery. In order to keep up this scale of development, the work had to increase. It was not uncommon to see people off to work beginning at 4.00 a.m, more common still to see those leave work at a similar time. Despite this, the people pushed themselves to their absolute limits. This is when my final film takes place, at a time where the world had almost reached a true Solarpunk future, but was being held back by its double edges ideology of hard work.
Trauma
In the real world, Sri Lanka was largely unaffected by World Wars I and II, however the country did suffer a 30 year civil war between the Sinhala Nationalists and the LTTE (Liberation Tamil Tigers of Eelam). Essentially, this was a group of people who desired independence in the North (a sect they would dub Eelam) from the rest of the country. While this world is positioned as a more idyllic version of Sri Lanka, it still suffered the same tragedies as in real life.
It was shortly after this destruction that the shift to sustainability began, due to the loss of land, money and food.
Power Shifts
The first major power shift of the country was when it gained independence from the colonials in 1948, and the heirarchy switched from a matriarch to a democratic government. It was this and the influence of sustainable Sri Lankan policies. The line up of politicians remained the same, with the difference of there being no executive presidency. The bad decisions that were made several times in the past do not occur in this universe (disadvantageous trade laws and the like), in addition to the Sinhala only act which named Sinhala as the primary language of this country. While this was one of the main catalysts of the 30 year Civil War, it was also due to underlying conflicts between the Sinhala and Tamil people.
The second was the aforementioned modern full transition to renewable sources of energy. This was a multi stage initiative funded by the Government, who recognised the tropical nature of the island climate and that it could be used to power the country for generations to come. This led to an economic and industrial boom that shot the country up the ranks of the UN's human development index. As of the time period the film takes place in, Sri Lanka is ranked among the top 10 greenest countries, the top 10 best places to retire to and the top 5 countries with the lowest carbon footprint.

I'm flying about in the faux-solarpunk utopia in my energy-wasting flying car. The sun comes out from behind a cloud. I scream as the glare hits my eyes from a dozen different directions because everything is made out of reflective surfaces.
Blinded, I crash my car into somebody's water-wasting lawn and then my car explodes.

Bokashi: Solarpunk Action Week
Day 2: I drained my Bokashi bin.
Bokashi is a fermenting compost system. It basically pre-composts your food waste, so that when you take the waste outdoors, it composts faster.
You "feed" your waste to the bokashi bin every day or two. (I fill a bucket on my counter during the day, then empty it into the bokashi bin once full.) You add the waste in layers of an inch or two thick, and sprinkle bokashi bran between layers. It's a shredded dried plant material full of beneficial bacteria that turns your waste into a probiotic pickle!
You can purchase or DIY your bokashi bran. But making it does require supplies, like the beneficial microbes. It's more accessible to buy if you can't start off doing this in a group.
(I'm working on getting several friends interested in it, so that we can make our own bokashi bran!)
After your bokashi bin is full of waste and bran, you seal the lid for at least 2 weeks and let it ferment undisturbed. Occasionally, you'll have to drain liquid ("bokashi tea") from the bottom. You can use the tea as plant fertilizer or to keep your drains fresh.
After, you can bury the waste directly in your garden (wait 2 weeks before planting by it!) Or you can put it into your main compost heap, where it will break down faster than just raw scraps will.
My first bokashi bin is almost full! I've already had to drain the tea twice and it did NOT smell bad. Even though I'm composting meat scraps!!
Because yes: using bokashi, you can compost meat, baked goods, fats, that last bite of leftovers you couldn't manage to eat: all the sorts of stuff that is a faux paux to put in your average suburban compost heap.
There are lots of ways to DIY the bokashi, but I'm gonna be honest: I bought a 2-bin system. The DIY spirit hasn't been with me: Dad was the DIYer of our family and using his tools still feels like poking an open wound rather than cherishing his memory. (That'll come. Someday.)

Solarpunk fashion isn’t frivolous
I’d like to remind those who feel that caring about clothes and aesthetics is ‘too frivolous’ and ‘not solarpunk enough’ that they’re rehashing a conversation feminists have already had. “Don’t you have more important things to worry about than fashion?”
(1) Clothing is wrapped up with culture and identity. It’s shaped by local climate and social mores. If you’re writing speculative fiction, how people dress is going to be part of your world-building process.
(2) The same goes for art and architecture.
(3) We can care about more than one thing at a time. Being interested in fashion and design does not make a person less interested in creating a world that’s more just, renewably powered, and moving past net-zero to drawdown.
(4) Clothing is read differently on different bodies, with heteropatriarchal sexism, ageism, racism and colonialism all playing roles in how what a person is wearing changes how they are perceived. Want an anti-racist, decolonized future? Want to challenge gender norms? You’ll have to think about clothes.
We can critique the solarpunk fashion posts that are out there for a variety of legitimate reasons: too many flower crowns, too much green, too much colour, too many impractical outfits with lots of excess fabric, too much cultural appropriation, not enough size diversity or representation of people with disabilities, and so on. (Personally, I predict re-localization of fashion design and manufacture, combined with bioregional dyeing of natural fibres, cradle-to-cradle design for synthetic fibres, and zero-waste pattern cutting.)
There are legit critiques of solarpunk architecture posts too, depending on whether your solarpunk is urban or rural, flooded or desertified, techno-optimistic or permaculture-low-tech, post-scarcity or scavenged from the ruins.
But, please, quit it with the gatekeeping and faux-intellectual snobbery. People who got interested in solarpunk for aesthetic reasons instead of political reasons have just as much to offer in imagining the future as you do; they just have a different area of expertise than yours.

Solarpunk Fashion Week day 5
My dress is actually the skirt from my bell cosplay. I made it out of curtains I got from a thrift store! its meant to go over a hoopskirt though so its pretty long. Its got great big pockets in it too, because everything is better with pockets.
The cloak was made from curtains my sister was getting rid of. Its some kind of faux suede material I think? The trim on the cloak is also from my sister it was part of a fabric flower thing she got me to take off of her dress. the clasp is a brooch from the thrift store.
[Image description: a full length picture of myself wearing a flowey gold dress and a brown cloak with a metallic looking trim. I have shoulder length blonde curly hair and no makeup]
#solarpunkfashionweek#fashion#We need to bring cloaks back into fashion#This is a very fun outfit to spin around in very swooshy.

Other Solarpunk Thing Things:
-Feral plastic-eating bacteria have been known to destroy the outside of people's houses. -The climate is artificially stabilized. This mostly works but "the weather is broken today" is a phrase that needs to exist. -"Cemetery sidewalk" is another phrase that needs to exist. -If you want to be an artist, be prepared to only get work designing gaudy faux art nouveau towers and the creepy structures warning people away from walled-off polluted areas. -If you want to be a scientist, I hope you like agriculture, eugenics, and inventing new kinds of eyesore power plants. -Energy-generating eyesores are made worse eyesores by artists commissioned to make them look like something else. -The stereotypical Solarpunk aesthetic only prevails in urban/wealthy areas, and is an "obviously cranked out by a soulless design firm somewhere" interpretation at that. -Oh great someone just threw themself off a vertical farm during their umpteenth 20 hour shift. -Sometimes people live next to fields of those freaky screeching wind farm things and it's worse than living next to a runway.
