Okay but like. /I/ care about success paradigms in koi breeding

Well, since you asked, here you go:

If you specifically want to breed two koi together, the easiest way to do that is to isolate them in a pond. I don’t care about that, so here’s what I’ve noticed about my most successful and least successful adults in the pond.

Obviously, the plural of anecdote is not data, so if anyone has data confirming or denying any of these observations, I would love to be fact checked!

1) In the female koi, size matters. A large adult female will get more attention than a smaller one. Sharkie, who has often been affectionately described as a mars rocket, takes up all the attention in the pond. Older koi tend to be larger, and there’s some indication that a similarly-sized younger koi doesn’t get the same attention as an older one, but it’s hard to be sure when they’re sharing a pond with Queen Fattyfats. Additionally, older koi generally lay more eggs than a younger koi, thus increasing the amount of surviving offspring.

2) Female koi have opinions! A larger male can “bully” the female into breeding anyways, but an equally-sized or larger female koi can pretty much beat up the male and chase him off if they don’t like him. While koi do group breed if you don’t isolate them to pairings, female koi will still chase off any particular males they don’t like, even if you’ve got a full pond, and a female with more suitors is more likely to exercise her power of choice.

3) Both in male and females, healthier koi get more attention than delicate ones. I don’t know if they recognize and remember incidents that indicate fragility or if there’s some other way they know this that I can’t identify because I’m not a koi, but they can definitely tell. I do know it’s not color, because Sharkie’s color doesn’t “pop” but she’s still a tank and still beloved by all.

4) Besides Swiss, who was a nasty incest man, there’s a preference in breeding with unrelated koi. It’s not a strong preference, and the other factors here will outweigh it, but given the choice between two identical koi, there will be a slight preference to breed with the unrelated one. Since you get healthier and more viable fry by avoiding incest, it’s just better to put enough genetic diversity into your pond that they’ll act on that preference.

5) Male koi that cause breeding injuries get chased off if the female koi has any kind of choice at all. They don’t even have to cause injury to the koi in question; if the injury was caused while the female was also in the pond, that’s a black mark no matter which koi it happened to.

6) Male koi who are “best friends” with the female koi also have more success in breeding than male koi who aren’t. Similarly, a sociable male koi has more reproductive success than an unsociable male koi. As well as success, sociable male koi simply don’t cause breeding injuries- we pick for sociability over prettiness, and only the unsociable boys have ever caused injuries.

7) Male koi who “taildance” during breeding season will have more viable offspring than similarly sized male koi who don’t. I literally don’t know why this is, or what taildancing is even supposed to do. Maybe it’s just because they’re happy?

here’s Big Daddy!

He wasn’t even the biggest fish in the pond tho, that honor goes to her royal highness Queen Fattyfats, also known as Sharkie.

At least 12 years old, 38 inches and possibly over 30 pounds (it’s hard to weigh a wiggly koi), she is the queen of the pond and she knows it well.

I had a koi named big daddy (can provide pics if u want) but I don't think big mama would care about that. he was so handsome and stupid though. one brain cell full of Respect Women juice.
