Imagine you’re having car trouble and when you call for help, the person who answers asks you to mimic the noise the car is making, and then identifies the problem.

This was the genius of @KellyAnnSutton’s father, Jerry. He could fix most anything, she said, though cars were his specialty.

Raised in Memphis, KellyAnn went to college in Nashville so Jerry taped two coins to his business card and put them in her Jeep in case she had car trouble along the road to school.

“If you can’t fix it, use this note to call me. Love, Dad,” the note read. (It was a time before cell phones were prevalent.) The note stayed in KellyAnn’s Jeep, along with some tools he gave her, well into her adult life. (Editor’s note: my dad put tools in my car too, the sweetest father-daughter tradition!)

When the time came to retire KellyAnn’s Jeep, Jerry advised his daughter on a Volkswagen Jetta and so, the tools and note were symbolically transferred to her new vehicle— quiet passengers to remind KellyAnn she’d have a way to fix anything that went wrong.

Her most recent car purchase was different— the first without her father.

"He wasn’t there for the guidance and direction he’s given all these years,” KellyAnn said. Jerry passed away five years ago.

KellyAnn is now the proud owner of a Mazda, whom she affectionately named Lola after grandmother. Before the note was transferred to the new ride as per tradition, we had a chance to photograph it. It still sang with love even though the years had worn it down. We went larger-than-life with the print because all that time and love was bigger than a business card— it deserved to be highlighted and celebrated.

“I can almost hear his voice whispering to me,” Kelly Ann said. “If you can’t fix it, I will always be here for you.

Forgive the hubris of including my own first mural in this collection...

In 1914 Piet Mondrian reportedly said “Art is higher than reality, and has no relationship to reality.” Three years later Mondrian was a co-founder of the Dutch De Stijl movement, promoting the idea that purity in art required the elimination of anything organic or representational. As a graphic designer in the 70s and 80s, before computers completely revolutionized not only the way we operated but the physical space in which we worked, I was always dabbling with art of some kind and in the mid-80s briefly contemplated an alternate history in which Mondrian applied the style he is most closely associated with to a series of secret figure studies. Picking up that idea in my retirement and expanding on it, @GabbaGallery was kind enough to let me experiment with my first mural in Alley 2 of their nearby Gabba Arts District.  @rbcole/
