We are now facing the ultimate test of the concept of soulmates and choice within their universe as well as the power of kindness, compassion and love.

Tien believes in soulmates. He always has. He watched his parents divorce but still believed that their love mattered and he always believed that Tai would find love with soulmate.

Lomfon absolutely does not believe in soulmates, has stated as much, and now has to face what it means to hear someone in the rain and to face his own changing emotions.

But in this story Tien has to face his trust in soulmates when the person he loves is attached to his brother and to decide for himself, to make the choice, about what love means.

While Lomfon has to look at the idea of soulmates that he doesn't believe in and his crush on Tai while he's also starting to like Tien and he's suddenly in a place where none of what he thought makes sense made sense any more.

Love is a choice and there might be fate and destiny but fate and destiny do not determine your choices, only your chance to make those choices.

Tai and Patts are soulmates who finally made the choice to be with each other and were brought together though shared kindness, compassion and love.

But Lomfon and Tien are strangers who formed a connection naturally only to have fate and destiny and soulmates placed between them rather than enhancing that natural connection. They are both going to have to make a choice but that choice feels bigger.

Lomfon has been flirting with Tai for this long but is still unsure of how he feels now that he's experiencing Tien's kindness. Kindness and compassion are the building blocks of love.

Tai and Tien are both kind people who find kind people in Patts and Lomfon. Lomfon and Patts both found people that they could love and who need their love in Tien and Tai. They all found kindness, compassion and love with each other.

The final hurdle, the last wrench in this is, in Tien's belief in soulmates and Lomfon's new hearing loss. Because this is the final test, the final look at fate and destiny and choice and what is a choice.

The keychain and the rain matter, the post it notes matter, the kindness and the compassion and the silence and the noise all matter because you make choices about what matters.

Generally speaking, I don't like "fated mates". I don't like it because it just isn't interesting to me. But one version I do like is the fated mates who don't stop hating each other. Unwilling obsession, lust tempered by loathing. People who can't stand and cannot stay away from each other. Whose time in bed is as much attempted homicide as it is sex. Two individuals who would rather die than end up together, but they can't seem to do anything but keep finding each other.

THAT I like.

As someone who loves the Ice planet barbarian series by ruby dixon who is a fated mate author and where all mates get together at the end of the books, I was shocked to find out that acotar fans are now so against the fated mating trope.

I thought that everyone who read the books loved the fated mates trope and wants the mates to be together in the end, like this is the whole point of the genre. If I wanted to read a will they/ won't they, I would pick books without this trope, because fated mate tropes are always predictable and that's why many readers like them, because they know the outcome (even If it takes longer to get there)

La Pluie epiphany 

I finally figured out why I am so tense around this show. 

In openly taking to task and challenging the soulmates trope, this narrative is telling viewers not to trust its core BL trope - which means we cannot trust the main couple to end happily, nor can we trust those characters who believe most strongly in fated mates (Pat & Mai). 

This means I, personally, not only can’t rely on an HEA but (as someone who also does not believe in soulmates) I’m not entirely sure I even WANT an HEA. This has NEVER happened to me before. 

 It makes me uncomfortable because that’s a core part of my identify with these shows. 

I mean, good job La Pluie, but also.... huh.

I actually could not care less about mates, it's so much more romantic when characters choose each other and fight for each other. It's boring when they're just "supposed" to be together, and let's face it the mate trope usually ends up being misogynistic in some way or in the grey area of choice

is it just me or is “fated mates” often used as an excuse to skip over actual romantic development?

Like the second I see it in a fantasy/romance book I immediately want to put it down because all the development a couple could’ve had (ESPECIALLY enemies to lovers) gets thrown out the window with the excuse of “oh they’re fated so in the end their development doesn’t matter it’s destiny.”
