I don’t know much about this, but I feel like the moral of the story is to just NOT.
a guide to exploring abandoned farms
essential supplies include: plenty of food and water, a change of socks, a hat, rope, bandaids, a knife, gloves, an acorn in your pocket, and an offering
there are always odd noises on the farm. half of them come from the animals
try to forget what the lake looks like between the hours of three and four AM
never ever find yourself alone in the milking shed in the south end of the farm. time passes differently there
if you happen to hurt yourself in your exploration, make sure you do not bleed onto the dirt
bring plenty of water, you do not want to drink from there
the cows will watch you, this is normal
close every gate you open, even if the fields are empty. don’t ever leave one open behind you, just trust me
beware unstable rocks, the cracks tend to be filled with insect nests
bring a weapon with you, but no guns
if you see someone else while exploring, never tell them your name. you can never be sure if they are real or not, and further out you go, the less real they will seem. the patupaiarehe have evolved in cruel and unusual ways
do not go inside the empty share-milkers cottages, whatever you do, do not go inside. something else lives there now
a tree with the undersides of its leaves showing mean that a storm is coming. a tree with no leaves means the storm has already come
sometimes the hills look like they’re moving. be aware of this, because some things don’t like to be disturbed
do not sleep under the full moon, in fact, just don’t sleep on the farm
finding skulls is normal, only become worried when you start finding ribs
if you find yourself lost in a forest, continue walking in a straight line until you are free again. the trees may make it look as though you are going in circles, but i promise you’re not. ignore the soft music you can hear
your phone won’t work out here
the ghosts from the land wars won’t harm you, but be sure to show them respect
don’t take anything from the farm with you when you leave. just be grateful you have made it out alive

Fine dining in India takes on a new avatar with curated menus, renowned chefs and intimate settings
Fine dining in India takes on a new avatar with curated menus, renowned chefs and intimate settings
Fine dining turned adventurous during the pandemic, as chefs used every ingredient to bring people back to the table, either at their homes or at exotic locales “Oh, come all ye faithful”, a trio tomato rasam made with lentils, will be one of the dishes at a 10-course sit down festival menu, curated by Chef Johnson Ebenezer, at Farmlore in Bengaluru this Christmas. The festive menu is part a…

Old stories of Farm Mayhem
I’ve been reading old letters I wrote to friends about ten years ago. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. There are definitely some STRONG memories here. Might as well share.
6:30 am 48 degrees; Happy July, why is it so ever-loving cold out? The cow wouldn't let down her milk. I needed the blasted milk, so I stomped out of the barn, leaving Belle locked inside. I figured if I went back in an hour or two she'd be over her snit and be willing to let me have one darn gallon.
Back at the house I got out the beautiful raspberries I'd spent an hour picking the evening before and prepared to make pie while it was still cool out. It is so unfortunate that I was still a little groggy. I dumped in the sugar, grabbed the box of cornstarch from the cabinet and very scientifically dumped in "about enough", and started to stir. Shortly it occurred to me that the berries seemed faintly - fizzy. Oh, dear God in Heaven, no. But yes. I had grabbed the baking soda box instead of the cornstarch box. I added some lemon juice, thinking I could counteract the baking soda, which gave me an amazing purple and pink volcano. I put in the cornstarch and hopefully cooked it the rest of the way, but when I tasted it - UGH - completely ruined.
I did, in fact, go back to the barn later with my three-yr-old daughter in tow. Belle had expressed her displeasure by carefully positioning her butt over the feed dish and filling it with liquid manure for me to scrub out. I milked her, answered all Daughter's questions (they are legion), and dragged the stinking, sloppy feed pan outside and scrubbed it.
Next we went to the garden. Sadly, all the morning coolness had by now (9 am) fled. I started loading the wagon with our helpful neighbor's grass clippings to spread them out as mulch. We didn't have any disasters doing this, just plenty of hot and heavy work with Daughter tagging along saying, "Mommy, I'm hot. I want to go inside. I'm thirsty. I'm hungry. I want to go inside now!" Me, too.
I made great strides in the garden by the time I ran out of grass and patience. I went inside and gave the order to suit up. The kids wanted a swim - I really neededone. We headed off to Rocky Gap with a few towels and some jam sandwiches. That was fun, even though it is a bit nerve-wracking to take two non-swimmers to the lake and keep watch on both of them at once every second.
When we got home we found the chickens had staged a jailbreak. We rounded them up, squawking and protesting. Daughter loved chasing them around the yard.
.
NAP TIME
.
Until my seven-yr-old son rushed into my room and said, "Mommy, the refrigerator is warm inside!" I staggered to the kitchen to check the fridge, which was perfectly fine. One ruined nap. At 4:00 we set out to the neighbors, because they had graciously offered to take the kids for a few hours. Dan and I would be eating alone! I went home and put together some pork shishkebabs, then I. Sat. Quietly. All. By. Myself.
Dan got home and started the charcoal for our shishkebabs (between the two of us, we make really delicious kebabs). Then he remembered something he had forgotten in town, and rushed off. I did some more quiet sitting. He returned, grilled, and we ate. The second we were finished, a big honkin' truck pulled in the driveway. It was a Neighborhood Guy, come to pick up the old truck for scrap metal. Dan rushed off.
Sigh
I went out to pick berries.
Again.
It takes 45 minutes to load one old truck onto a flatbed.
Then they took off to the other property to gather up some more exciting scrap metal over there. The Guy was really giving the farm a face-lift.
When the time came I returned to the neighbors’ house to collect my children. When I pulled in Daughter said "Mommy!" and Son said "Oh, no!" I reassured him that we could stay long enough to have the marshmallows they were just about to start roasting. He ate one, then ran inside to use the bathroom. In a few minutes he came back out. "Mommy, I had an accident. In my pants" the poor lad whispered. Well, what he'd really had was diarrhea. In his pants, on the bathroom floor, etc. It can happen to any one of us. Just usually not at a neighbor's house. For the second time that day, I got down on my knees and started scrubbing. I was substantially more compassionate this time.
In borrowed pants, we returned home. To find the chickens had staged a jailbreak. Daughter and I (grit grit - yes, that is my teeth) confined them while Son rested inside. When we had almost all of them Dan's truck came screeching into the drive and he jumped out. He was holding his right arm up in the air with his left arm, a bandanna wrapped tightly around his wrist. "I've got the bleeding stopped," he announced, "But I think I'd better go get some stitches."
It was a day, all right.
