something absolutely lovely about especially the first half of fellowship is that the hobbits keep meeting random kind helpful strangers - the elves, bombadil, butterbur, aragorn (also farmer maggot and his wife, though they're not strangers) - until the book solidifies in you the feeling that these are not really instances of random luck, but rather the inherent nature of the world. kind people are everywhere, and no matter where you are, there is surely someone closer than you think that would offer help if you needed it. it's such a beautiful theme across all of LOTR, and it's very sweet to me that it starts from the very beginning of the journey, on such a 'small' (comparatively), everyday scale

May I suggest an alternate, more unhinged Fellowship of the Ring?
From left to right:
- Halbarad (the normal one, very underrated)
- Lady Dis (has been carrying a grudge for a very long time)
- Tauriel (I love her, and I want her to go on a nice roadtrip with her mother-in-law)
- Prince Imrahil (I just think he's neat)
- Cirdan the Shipwright (too old for this shit, parents the others, will probably go on rampage at some point)
- Grimbeorn the Old (looks like they could kill you, is actually a cinammon roll)
- Lobelia Sackville-Baggins (will see the manager and kick his arse)
- Farmer Maggot (keeper of the single braincell, secretly the most dangerous of the lot)
- Radagast (has no idea what is going on, is just along for the ride, has the same abilities as Snow-White in Shrek)
Now, please, do tell me how that trainwreck goes. One thing I know for sure is that they're all smoking weed by the time they reach the gates of Moria.
Other contenders I thought to include but didn't : Tom Bombadil, Goldberry, Beregond, Glorfindel, Faramir, Rosie Cotto, Fatty Bolger, Elladan and Elrohir, Thorin Stonehelm, Gwaihir.

NOTE: I said “LESS famous changes” - which means the more famous ones (Tom Bombadil, Faramir, Gimli, etc) do not apply here.

Part 4 💛
In Chapter 4 of The Fellowship of the Ring, titled "A Shortcut to Mushrooms," Frodo, Sam, and Pippin continue their journey through the countryside of the Shire, attempting to avoid the Black Riders. They take a shortcut across Farmer Maggot's fields, leading to an encounter with the farmer himself. Though initially tense due to Frodo's childhood fear of Maggot, the farmer turns out to be a helpful ally, offering them food, shelter, and guidance on their way.
A key takeaway from this chapter is the importance of overcoming fear and prejudices to seek help when needed. Frodo’s initial apprehension about meeting Farmer Maggot proves unfounded, as Maggot’s kindness and hospitality demonstrate that allies can be found in unexpected places. The chapter also emphasizes the value of community and the bonds of shared kindness, even in times of danger.
In our own lives, this chapter reminds us not to let past fears or assumptions prevent us from reaching out to others. It highlights the power of generosity and trust in building meaningful connections and overcoming challenges. By being open to support and cooperation, we can find strength and guidance in places we might not expect.

The sun was already behind the western hills, and the light was failing. Two of Maggot's sons and his three daughters came in, and a generous supper was laid on the large table. The kitchen was lit with candles and the fire was mended. Mrs Maggot bustled in and out. One or two other hobbits belonging to the farm-household came in. In a short while fourteen sat down to eat. There was beer in plenty, and a mighty dish of mushrooms and bacon, besides much other solid farmhouse fare. The dogs lay by the fire and gnawed rinds and cracked bones.

he made no secret that he owed his recent knowledge largely to Farmer Maggot, whom he seemed to regard as a person of more importance than they had imagined. 'There's earth under his old feet, and clay on his fingers; wisdom in his bones, and both his eyes are open,' said Tom.
