When movie!Boromir says "by the blood of my people your lands are kept safe", I just get chills. The strain in his voice, the despair, he feels their sacrifice, he feels their suffering. The fact his home has been at war for years, that he seen so many deaths, so much destruction, hasn't been enough to numb him to the loss. He loves his people, he loves his home. And the Ring promises him an instant end to all of that.
It's hard to feel that the temptation the Ring has for him, more than the rest of the Fellowship, is due to a comparative lack of virtue on his part, and more a desperate urgency to end the bloodshed of his people. Although other members of the Fellowship have fought and suffered defending Middle Earth at this point, it is Boromir who lives in sight of Mordor, it's Boromir whose people live in sight of Mordor.
Of course the Ring is going to tempt him the most,

Meriadoc Brandybuck moments in the book that I wish we saw in the films
Tumblr media
Merry solves the riddle of the ithildin door into Moria.
He was quick on the uptake in most situations, including when he anticipated Frodo's need to leave the Shire due to something involving Bilbo's ring.
In Rivendell, he studies maps to plot their journey.
Before the quest, he took charge of the chaotic distribution of Bilbo's gifts after he left for Rivendell, including handling the infamous Sackville-Bagginses.
Tumblr media
He was quick-witted.
I've always remembered Lobelia shouting at Frodo that he's not really a Baggins, but a Brandybuck. Frodo says, "How do you like that, Merry? That was an insult, if you like!"
Merry shoots back, "It was a compliment. And so, of course, not true."
His "gentle loyalty", arguably something each of the hobbits possess, but not as emphasized in the films in Merry's case. I love the passage in RotK that describes Merry's courage arising from empathy for Eowyn's plight:
"suddenly the slow-kindled courage of his race awoke. He clenched his hand. She should not die, so fair, so desperate! At least she should not die alone, unaided.”
All the main hobbits play a significant role of their own in the Scouring, but it struck me that Merry is really the one who takes the strongest leadership role to rally their fellow hobbits and challenging the ruffians.
And to all this I love that Dominic Monaghan added hints of his own cheeky, devil-may-care energy.

do you think that once the hobbits got back to the shire they realised they needed to slow their walking speed because they'd gotten used to walking a lot quicker around the tall folks for the months of the quest

something absolutely lovely about especially the first half of fellowship is that the hobbits keep meeting random kind helpful strangers - the elves, bombadil, butterbur, aragorn (also farmer maggot and his wife, though they're not strangers) - until the book solidifies in you the feeling that these are not really instances of random luck, but rather the inherent nature of the world. kind people are everywhere, and no matter where you are, there is surely someone closer than you think that would offer help if you needed it. it's such a beautiful theme across all of LOTR, and it's very sweet to me that it starts from the very beginning of the journey, on such a 'small' (comparatively), everyday scale

"He's dead, Vizzini is," he said softly. And then, with not a bit of help from his brain, a great scream of panic burst from Fezzik's throat into the night. "Inigo!" and he whirled back down the mountain path, because if Inigo was alive, it would be all right; it wouldn't be the same, no, it could never be that without Vizzini to order them and insult them as only he could, but at least there would be some time for poetry, and when Fezzik reached the Cliffs of Insanity he said "Inigo, Inigo, here I am" to the rock and "I'm here, Inigo, it's your Fezzik"
From the Princess Bride novel
Inigo and Fezzik's friendship is so important to me. They have so much love for each other, it's so sweet to see.

In Chapter 5 of The Fellowship of the Ring, titled "A Conspiracy Unmasked," Frodo, Sam, and Pippin arrive at Frodo’s new house in Crickhollow, where Frodo plans to secretly leave for Rivendell the next day, believing he must protect his friends from the dangers ahead. However, Merry, Pippin, and Sam reveal they have long suspected Frodo’s plans and are determined to join him on his journey. Their loyalty and unwavering support surprise Frodo, showing him that he doesn’t have to face the burden of the Ring alone.
A key takeaway from this chapter is the strength of friendship and the importance of trust. Frodo learns that he doesn’t need to isolate himself or shoulder his responsibilities alone—his friends are willing to share in the dangers to support him. It also demonstrates that true friends will see beyond attempts to hide or protect them and stand by us no matter the cost.
In our own lives, this chapter teaches us to embrace the support of those who care about us and to recognize the power of unity in facing challenges. It reminds us that burdens shared with others become lighter and that trusting our friends can make even the most daunting journey feel less lonely.

“Poor Boromir! I could not see what happened to him. It was a trial for such a man: a warrior, and a lord of men. Galadriel told me that he was in peril. But he escaped in the end. I am glad. It was not in vain that the young hobbits came with us, if only for Boromir’s sake.”
