Roxas City: The Seafood Capital of the Philippines
by Richard Collett
Tumblr media
We’ve got the funk’ is loudly playing in the background, as the fish farmers ready their nets on the side of the wooden jetty.
‘We’ve got the fish’, would be more appropriate, but it’s still a strangely fitting song to hear, as the fishermen wade out into the water, and in a well practised, synchronised routine begin to herd the fish towards their nets.
It’s almost mesmerising to watch as the fish begin thrashing around in the shallow water, as the nets draw around them.
This was the daily scene at the Siguin Fish Farm, just one of the many fish farms that make up the huge fishing industry on the Filipino island of Panay. It’s this huge fish cultivation tradition that has led to the city of Roxas being crowned the Seafood Capital of the Philippines.
And I was about to get stuck right in.
Tumblr media
Fish and the Philippines
Fish is big business in the Philippines. This is an archipelago of well over 7000 islands, with thousands upon thousands of miles of coastline.
The waters are some of the most biodiverse in the world, being home to everything from whale sharks and turtles to milkfish and sardines.
It’s no wonder then, that the Filipino culinary tradition is closely aligned with the food that can be sourced from the oceans. But with an ever increasing population, as with everywhere else in the world, those once vast fish stocks are of course declining.
But rather than keep taking from the oceans, the fishermen of Roxas began a more sustainable practice, and you can find countless fish farms arrayed along the waterways, lagoons and coastline of the city’s surrounds
Tumblr media
The Seafood Capital of the Philippines
The feast is prepared at the fish farm, with the freshly caught Bangus being filleted and grilled by the edge of the water.
But there’s more than just Bangus, and I quickly start to realise that perhaps the title of Seafood Capital of the Philippines, is really rather apt for Roxas City.
Laid out Boodle Fight style are a huge range of dishes. Fish cooked in a coconut broth, fish steamed in banana leaves, fish simply grilled on the open coals.
Then there are the oysters, the stuffed squid, the mussels and of course, piles upon piles of prawns and crabs.
The rich fishing grounds here provide an abundance of seafood to Roxas City, but of course, the farmers and fishermen will need to be ever so careful of how they protect that abundance, to ensure its safety for the future.

Visayan Warty Pig
The Visayan Warty Pig has two subspecies that were recognized as such until 2000. Unfortunately, we have lost one of the subspecies, the Cebu Wart Pig and the other, the Negros Warty Pig is critically endangered.
Its biggest threat is habitat loss causing by commercial logging and farming. It is extinct in 98% of its native range.
Other studies indicated that there might be other subspecies of this Pig inhabiting the island of Panay in the Philippines.

Top 5 places you can visit in the Philippines after this Pandemic.
Tumblr media
5. Cebu’s Beaches and Diving Spots
Cebu is a province of the Philippines located in the Central Visayas (Region VII) region, and consists of a main island and 167 surrounding islands and islets.
Cebu has been recently awarded as part of UNESCO’s Network of Creative Cities but its main treasure lies deep down. The island draws over two million foreign travelers every year, greeted by rich waters teeming with abundant marine life.
Cebu boasts some of the best diving spots in the entire country and even the world, featuring underwater caves, shallow shipwrecks, and marine sanctuaries.
White sand beaches of Cebu await visitors of Mactan, Camotes, and Bantayan Island. Off the northernmost tip of Cebu, tiny Malapascua Island packs a lot of surprises, including diving with thresher sharks. Check out other Cebu tours that you can add to your itinerary.
How to go to Cebu
You can go to Cebu by Via Air or Via Sea.
Tumblr media
4. Cloud 9, Siargao
Siargao Island is a tropical paradise located in the Surigao del Norte province of the Philippines. This teardrop-shaped island has grown steadily in popularity over the past few years and is often known as the country's surfing capital.
Siargao’s inclusion to the top tourist spots in the Philippines is nothing short of meteoric. Once a sleepy island in Surigao del Norte, it has become one of the most favorite destinations and playgrounds for travelers, and it is primarily because of one activity: surfing.
It is now known as the surfing capital of the Philippines and some even regard it as the surfing mecca of Asia.
Surfers are drawn to Cloud 9, the most famous wave in the entire country. From November until April, all is well with Cloud 9’s thick tubes, making it a perfect place to get stoked (note: it is recommended for advanced surfers only).
But you do not need to be riding the waves to enjoy this island destination as there are also other fun Siargao activities and beautiful attractions like rock pools, waterfalls, and the nearby Sohoton Lagoon where you can swim with thousands of non-sting jellyfish.
How to Go to Siargao:
By Air
To Siargao Island has an airport - Sayak Airport only Skyjet and Cebu Pacific fly there direct from Manila.
There are two additional airlines - Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific , which offer flights from Manila to Siargao, however, they will all make a stop in Cebu
By Boat
There is also the overnight passenger boat from Cebu to Surigao City with "Cokaliong Shipping Lines". The ferry departs from Cebu daily and you can book even a private cabin.
Tumblr media
3. Puerto Princesa Underground River, Palawan
Palawan is the largest island of the province of Palawan in the Philippines and the fifth largest island of the country. The north west coast of the island is along the South China Sea, while the south east coast forms part of the northern limit of the Sulu Sea.
The gateway to Philippine’s Last Frontier, Palawan, is its capital Puerto Princesa. It is here that you can find the world’s longest navigable underground river and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Puerto Princesa Underground River or the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.
Paddleboats of the Puerto Princesa underground river tour cruise through scenic limestone cliffs as it makes its way through the 1.5-kilometer underground river cave.
The park is also teeming with wildlife like crab-eating monkeys, monitor lizards, and bats. Island hopping escapades in Honda Bay and a visit to the Crocodile Farm are also highly recommended among the many things to do in Puerto Princesa.
How to go to Palawan
The easiest and most common way to go to Palawan is by riding a plane, with Puerto Princesa as the main jump-off. There are also flights going to El Nido, Coron, and San Vicente. However, more flights are going to Puerto Princesa, and it covers international flights aside from domestic
Tumblr media
2. Chocolate Hills, Bohol
Bohol is a province of the Philippines, in the country’s Central Visayas region. It comprises Bohol Island and numerous smaller surrounding islands. Bohol is known for coral reefs and unusual geological formations, notably the Chocolate Hills. On the main island, near the town of Carmen, these 1,200 or so symmetrical mounds turn cocoa-brown in the dry season, contrasting with the surrounding jungle's greenery.
Included in the UNESCO World Heritage Natural Monuments list, the Chocolate Hills of Bohol are a geomorphic wonder and truly a sight to behold. It is one of the best places in the Philippines to offer a unique landscape, with its 1,268 cone-shaped hills that turn chocolatey brown during the dry season, hence its name.
The limestone hills vary in size but almost look similar in shape and range from 30 to 120 meters in height. It’s a must-add in any itinerary for Bohol trips.
Make your way to the town of Carmen, where the Chocolate Hills Main Viewpoint can be found. Aside from the Chocolate Hills, there is also a treasure chest of natural wonders and other fun things to do and places to see in Bohol.
Some of which includes Panglao Island tours, Loboc River Cruise, and the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary visits, where you can see the world’s smallest primate.
How to go to Bohol
You have to fly from Manila or from Cebu City to Tagbilaran City, the Bohol Airport. There are daily flights with Philippines Airlines, Cebu Pacific or Asian Spirit. If you come from abroad and you want to avoid going to Manila, you can also fly directly to Cebu City airport and take the ferry boat to Tagbilaran City.
Tumblr media
1. White Beach, Boracay
Boracay is a small island in the Philippines, 7 km long and 1 km wide, located in the Western Visayas approximately 315 kilometres (196 miles) south of Manila and about 0.8 kilometres (0.50 mi) off the northwest tip of Panay Island.
Long hailed as one of the best beaches in the entire world, Boracay’s claim to fame is its 4-kilometer stretch of pure white, powdery sand called White Beach.
Cliche as it sounds, but White Beach is truly postcard-perfect, with tall coconut trees lined up and crystal-clear calm waters rounding up its unmatched beauty making it a top attraction in Boracay trips.
Its prominence in global publications has drawn in an influx of tourists over the last decades and there is no shortage of hotels, restaurants, and bars in the entire island.
How to go to Boracay
There are no direct flights into Boracay; all visitors must fly to either Caticlan (the closer airport) or Kalibo (a more distant airport 60 kilometres favoured for its cheaper flights), take a vehicle to Caticlan Jetty Port, and then take a boat from Caticlan Jetty Port, where there is a 10-20 minute boat ride to Boracay.
Which of those places are you going to visit first?

The Philippine province of Guimaras, a small island nestled between Panay and Negros, is renowned for its natural landscape and pastoral farms. On the orchards that cover the island, perfectly sweet mangga, or mangoes, grow in abundance. Throughout the year, a large percentage of these pristine fruits are exported. But for about two weeks each May, Guimaras celebrates the majesty of their mangoes in almost every way imaginable.
At the Manggahan Festival, the streets are filled with mango-shaped, yellow-orange tricycles. Performers wielding mango-like props dance during the mango-themed parade. Competitive athletes register for sporting events such as the Amazing Guimarace, the Tour de Guimaras, and a Motocross Challenge. For the true fruit lover, there’s the “Mango Eat All You Can”: For only 100 Philippine pesos (about $2), participants enter a space filled with a wealth of mango treats. For 30 minutes, it’s a free-for-all buffet.
In 1992, Guimaras was formally recognized as its own province. Locals incepted the first Manggahan Festival in 1993, in honor of their provincial founding. Festivities took place for one week in May. More than two decades later, the festival is still going strong and lasts almost twice as long. All five municipalities of Guimaras leverage the event as an opportunity to showcase the island’s culture. Manggahan also presents an opportunity to celebrate the community and give thanks for the island’s natural bounty.
Even when the festivities end, the island’s mango fever remains. Visitors can get their fix at the Trappist Monastery in Jordan. It’s the country’s only male monastery, and they make all sorts of mango sweets year-round.
Need to Know
The festival takes place over two weeks every May. While much of the festivities center around the Provincial Capitol Grounds in Jordan, there are mango-centric celebrations across the island.

Iloilo City soars in 2020 amid global health pandemic
#PHnews: Iloilo City soars in 2020 amid global health pandemic
ILOILO CITY – Positive vibes marked the start of 2020 in this highly urbanized city, and not even the global health pandemic can halt the continuous efforts of its local government unit in providing quality service to its constituents.
The unseen threat of the virus likewise did not stop the accolades for the city.
“For 2020, probably the biggest accomplishment even despite the pandemic was that this city has gained prominence,” Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said on Thursday.
The mayor said the initiatives of the city in responding to the threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) was recognized and even earned the moniker “Wakanda of the Philippines”.
This, the mayor said, is a bit difficult because of the high expectations for the city. “What is important I think is for everyone to work together. We still have a lot of things to do,” he said.
Its string of recognitions began with the Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Clean Tourist City Award 2020-2022. While it was awarded in Brunei in December 2019, it was presented to the city in January.
It is given to cities that have endeavored to beautify public areas, improve the environment and sanitation, enhance urban spaces, and promote their man-made and natural attractions.
Further, it aims to provide member states with a tool that will improve their tourism quality, increase marketing competitiveness but also improve the situation of residents and livelihood by alleviating poverty.
Complementing the recognition was the launch of the traffic discipline zone at the Sen. Benigno Aquino Avenue (Diversion Road) last January 16.
The 14-kilometer road showcased Ilonggos being law-abiding in following traffic rules and regulations and likewise highlighted the beautification projects of the city.
Before the health crisis, Iloilo's world-famous Dinagyang introduced change for better entertainment.
On January 26, the first time in 52 years, the religious and cultural festival introduced the 360 degrees concept where similar performances were simultaneously seen from all angles.
It was one of the innovations introduced by the organizers apart from lighting the heritage buildings at the downtown Calle Real dubbed “Illumination”.
City of Love
But not all plans and activities in the City of Love were pursued.
Following the declaration of the national government of the public health emergency, the local chief executive immediately convened all concerned sectors to discuss steps and other measures necessary to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
Classes were immediately suspended starting March 16, three days after Iloilo City was placed under enhance community quarantine or "lockdown" that lasted until the end of May.
During the period, only essential businesses were allowed to open. Only selected public transport services were given the go signal to ply routes with minimum health protocols imposed.
On March 25, Iloilo City recorded its first confirmed Covid-19 case -- a person with a travel history to Manila.
The city government was not alone in tackling the disease. Support from private and business groups and individuals kept pouring in. The support ranged from the provision of foods, rapid test kits, and personal protective equipment (PPE), among others.
The city government front-liners, the heroes of the campaign, were provided with accommodation.
The vessel of the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (JBLFMU) anchored at Iloilo River Wharf in Muelle Loney, City Proper was used as temporary lodging.
Amid the discrimination experienced by other health front-liners, the local government opened the Uswag dormitory at the Iloilo City Community College.
Soon other institutions followed opening their doors to government law enforcers and other individuals in the front-line.
To feed the thousands of front-liners, the mayor's wife Rosalie, with the help of the LGBTQ community, opened a Kitchen Patrol.
It fed 1,665 front-liners assigned in border checkpoints, hospitals, health centers, operation centers, and at the city hall.
While the daily food sustenance of front-liners had been taken care of, a parallel effort was initiated for city residents affected by the ECQ.
A total of 240 community kitchens were established that served around 1.9 million free meals during the entire duration of the lockdown. Parent-leaders, daycare workers, and supplemental feeding workers joined forces in cooking food for needy Ilonggos.
Ilonggo bakeries and milling firms La Filipina Uygongco, Great Harvest Commodities, Carlos Uy Corporation, and Angelina Bakeshop set aside business rivalries and collaborated with the city government to come up with the Ilonggo Pandesal, which served as a symbol of generosity and unity in times of crisis.
A total of 648,000 pieces of the pandesal were provided for free to city residents for 15 days.
Ilonggo artists also contributed by selling their prized paintings and donated part of the proceeds, used by the local government to produce 300,000 face masks through the Uswag (progress or success) sewers.
The local government in coordination with the Department of Agriculture (DA) rolled out the Uswag Rolling Store offering fresh farm produce to residents.
“Because of the Ilonggos’ unwavering brand of bayanihan spirit, we continue to fight against covid-19. Help from all sectors were overwhelming, and I am certain that it was the help coming from everyone that kept us all intact and resilient,” said the mayor in his State of the City Address (SOCA) delivered in July.
Meantime, with limited transportation, Iloilo City dubbed the "Bike Capital of the Philippines" with an 11-kilometer route along the Diversion Road, also proposed for an additional 32.86 kilometers of bike lane. It also received donations that were provided to law enforcers, health workers, and other front-liners.
The city's efforts to respond to the threat of Covid-19 was boosted with the opening of its Covid-19 molecular laboratory in Barangay San Pedro, Molo.
The laboratory could release test results as fast as 24 to 48 hours.
It complemented the existing laboratories of the Qualimed Hospital and the Western Visayas Medical Center sub-national laboratory hence the faster processing and release of test results.
Another initiative to address the pandemic is the contact tracing QR code that made it easier for the local government to identify the status of an individual.
Iloilo City has been keeping the lead among the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) in planning for the purchase of vaccines for 100 percent inoculation. It has allocated PHP200 million for the acquisition of the Covid-19 vaccine.
On Dec. 29, the city's Special Committee on Vaccine Availment had a virtual meeting with vaccine czar and national policy against Covid-19 chief implementer Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr.
Treñas said several private firms in the city have committed to purchase vaccines for their employees. “I think we are moving forward very good,” he said.
With the new Covid-19 strain, the city remains vigilant and welcomes the idea of imposing a “stronger quarantine” when necessary.
“Let us all enjoy the New Year; know that your city is working for you,” the mayor said.
The city is currently on general community quarantine status but appealed that it be reclassified under modified general community quarantine in January 2021.
As of December 30, Iloilo City was left with 118 total active Covid-19 cases out of its 4,658 total cumulative cases. It also has 652 deaths.
Alongside all the Covid-19 efforts, other infrastructure projects were either completed or were bid out this year.
It was last Oct. 7 when the city government broke ground for the proposed 375-square space state-of-the-art five-story Iloilo City Action and Response (ICARE) Center.
The command center shall house the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO), police, and fire stations.
A site for the proposed 50-bed city hospital was likewise identified.
Ilongga beauty queen
One big win for the Ilonggos amid the pandemic was the coronation of Ilongga Rubiya Mateo as Miss Philippines-Universe during the pageant held in Baguio City in October.
Her homecoming in November made Ilonggos temporarily forget their fears of the Covid-19 virus as they tried to have a glimpse of the beauty queen.
Mateo’s homecoming coincided with the series of lighting ceremonies for the various lanterns and Christmas decorations along the major thoroughfare and plazas in the city.
Over 600 parols (lanterns) known as “Christmas Parol of Hope”, an initiative of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) Iloilo, hang along major streets of the city while private individuals and firms fill the plazas with decorations.
Just in time for Christmas Day, the Baysulangpu Society and private partners completed the mural paintings showcasing the historic landmarks of Calle Real, the old business district of the city.
Considered as the longest mural in Panay Island, the paintings were made on around 100 meters of the blank wall turned canvas along Sen. Benigno Aquino Avenue in Mandurriao district. (PNA)

🌿Our family ancestral rice fields in Talasa, Capiz, Panay, Philippines. This palay (rice field) originally belonged to my great grandfather Don Jose Villar, husband of Doña Amada Roxas Villar. There's a lot of history to this place. My Lolo and Lola met and fell in love here, hid here during the war, and left their legacy and memories in this land. They were enterprising and yet very much connected to Mother Earth. Lolo Aladino was from a poor farming family. Lola Natividad, the eldest daughter, was from a highly political and very educated business family. Opposites attracted, and became a forbidden love between Aladino and Natividad. Against her father's wishes, they eloped and ran away to the island of Mindanao, to settle in a city called Cotabato (Kutawato). They created a life together, and my mother and her sister were born of their union. Lolo and Lola had a successful sari sari store business, helped many of their relatives and neighbors, and are always fondly remembered to this day.❤ _ 🌿I am grateful to my mother for obtaining the stories of our ancestors on her last trip here. I look forward to sharing them with you all soon. Blessings! 🌱🙏✨ _ 👉In the meantime, please subscribe to our YouTube channel Herbalaria. We are working on showing a video interview my mother filmed of the oldest tenant (91 years old!) still living on this land, who knew my grandparents since she was 12. She's also going to tell us the secret to her health and longevity! "THE BEAUTIFUL PARADISE OF THE PROVINCE OF ROXAS CITY AND ANTIQUE”
The Province of Roxas City Capiz and Antique was one of the provinces in the island of Panay.
ROXAS CITY “THE SEAFOOD CAPITAL OF THE PHILIPPINES”
Officially the City of Roxas, is a 3rd class city and capital of the province of Capiz, Philippines. Originally known as the Municipality of Capiz (from which the province derives its name), the area became a chartered city on May 12, 1951, and was renamed in honor of native Manuel Acuña Roxas, the fourth President of the Philippines and the first of the independent post-American Third Philippine Republic. Roxas City has an agri-based economy. Farming and fishing are the major economic activities which claim 37.05% of the city’s total land area. Although agricultural, the city is now moving towards commercialization and industrialization as it is the center of trade and commerce not only in the province of Capiz but also in the northern part of Panay Island. Rice and melons are the major crops grown in this region. Many locals have papaya and jackfruit trees. Roxas City as Seafood capital of the Philippines supplies export seafood products to various countries such as Taiwan, Japan and the United States. Phillips Seafood Philippines Corporation is the sole seafood production company in Roxas City. The main aquaculture farms are oyster and milk fish farms that take advantage of natural tidal bays and other low-lying areas near the coast. Their seafood processing plant is located in Banica, Roxas City.

ANTIQUE “WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEET THE SEA”
Antique got its tagline "Where the mountains meet the sea" because of the relatively short distance between its mountains and its coast, which lies parallel to it. Just like its highland attractions, there's absolutely a lot to explore in Antique's long coastal area aside from providing an unobstructed view of the sunset. On the souhern most tip of Antique is Nogas Island, an uninhabited 26-hectare marine and bird sanctuary.
According to oral history, related as the legend of Maragtas, Antique is believed to be the landing site of ten Bornean Datus who escaped persecution from Sri-Vishaya, a Hindu-Malay empire that existed from the 7th to the 14th century in Borneo and Sumatra. There they met the Negrito/Ati (earliest settlers of Panay) chieftain Marikudo. They bought the island from the chieftain for a golden saduk (headpiece or helmet), and a golden necklace, among other gifts, the event is known as the "Barter of Panay". The Negritos then retreated to the mountains, while the Borneans settled in the lowlands. Today, the landing is commemorated every year in Antique in the Binirayan festival on the month of April with highlights on April 27 to 29.
The Antiqueños are noted for their industry. They are renowned weavers throughout the Visayas. The Bugasong patadyong, a tube cotton fabric of plaid design, is highly valued because of its fineness of weaving. Piña cloth is also produced in looms throughout the province. Wine manufactured from the sap of the coconut is a cottage industry. Muscovado sugar production is also a big industry in Antique, which has become an attraction of sorts because of Antique's native delicacies derived from muscovado sugar.

Rezatec expands into South East Asia by delivering innovative water sector projects with Metro Pacific Water
Harwell, Oxfordshire, 30th January 2018. Rezatec – the leader in satellite big data analytics – is working with Metro Pacific Water to improve the availability of drinking water and sanitation in the metropolitan cities of Manila and Iloilo in the Philippines.
Metro Pacific Water is the water and wastewater investments arm of the Philippines’ leading infrastructure conglomerate, Metro Pacific Investments Corp.
Monitoring lake pollution
For several years, Rezatec has been deploying its services to water utilities around the world, and now, as part of a continued global expansion into new markets, it is collaborating with Metro Pacific Water to reduce degradation of the Maasin watershed area and Laguna Lake – two core sources of water.
In the first of two separate projects, Metro Pacific Water commissioned Rezatec to analyse the status of the Maasin watershed in Iloilo on Panay Island, an area that over the years has increasingly suffered high degradation due to slash and burn farming practices and firewood harvesting. Earth observation data is being used to map the entire area – equivalent to 7,000 hectares of land – and conduct a stream inventory of the Tigum river tributaries. Using historic data mapped against new geographical baseline data Rezatec can monitor land use change such as deforestation for agriculture and illegal burning, and identify damage caused by regional typhoons and seasonal weather patterns, all of which have an impact on water quality.
The second project involves geospatial analytics to determine those areas of Laguna Lake – the largest lake in the Philippines with a surface area of 922 km, located East of Manila – which are susceptible to water pollution from urban, industrial waste and agriculture. This includes the mapping of land use around the lake – which has seen water quality deteriorate to Class C – that contribute to the localised water pollution. Furthermore, using Rezatec’s unique data modelling techniques, accurate estimates of pollution source location and dispersion patterns of specific pollutants that might be discharged into the lake are being provided.
“We are very excited to collaborate with such a pioneering business. Their powerful satellite analytics coupled with their experience in working with water utilities all over the world to identify the sources of water degradation and pollution are an absolute asset for us. Rezatec are allowing us to understand – with a high level of precision – the origin of the biggest water quality offenders and prepare for remedial action. This has been possible to achieve within weeks with satellite analytics, saving months of ground observation and data collection in areas that are in real need of attention,” explained Yang Villa, Senior Manager for Public-Private Partnerships & Lead for Industry Innovation – Metro Pacific Water, Philippines.
“Rezatec is really excited to be working with such an innovative company as Metro Pacific Water. It is clear that the use of satellite-derived data analytics is highly relevant and powerful for them to support their watershed management challenges. By helping them truly understanding their areas of interest regarding land use and water pollution, we are providing tools that can help improve operational efficiency, reduce costs and preserve their precious water resources,” commented Philip Briscoe, Chief Operating Officer – Rezatec.
