Goodbye, Splatoon.
Splatoon 1 was a glorious thing,
Playing countless hours of turf war.
Levels of story mode that make you throw your Wii U,
And Nintendo makes a sequel.
To the stores we go, buying Splatoon 2.
Oh, Splatoon One has been forgotten.
On the sound of Splatoon 3’s box opening, its grave is sealed.
No more are the classics, ranked instead of anarchy,
Or that beloved, but goofy look.
Nintendo makes a DLC for Three.
Eventually, we must say Farewell to all good things.

Farewell, Splatoon 1 Servers...
Tumblr media
I drew Sally and Timothy (based on the Squid Siblings AU/the default Splatoon avatars in Splatoon 1) sad over the loss of the Splatoon 1 online servers because they are/will be gone as of today/tomorrow. RIP Splatoon 1 as we know it.

Farewell...
Tumblr media
Splatoon 1 was one of my favorite games back then. Even if I can't play it anymore, it was still a big part of me. And to think, that I forgot about its existence for years, before eventually coming back to it with splatoon 3, it's really weird. It used to be a memory deep in my head, and now that I remembered it? I love it. Yeah I missed splatfests and splatoon 2, (dw I have it now smh) But it's still a big part of who I was, and who I am. Goodbye, splatoon 1.

And as we bid farewell to Splatoon 3's final regular update, I look back on the past two years of splatting and salmon running and find myself craving even more.
Speaking as someone who's played since the Wii U original, Splatoon 3 has its pros and cons compared to its predecessors--but it offered a lot of welcome Quality of Life changes and new game mechanics that make battling feel so much better than before. The roll and surge were huge game-changers for me, I feel more freedom of movement than ever before in these games.
While the single player modes weren't all that groundbreaking lore-wise, they were still fun in their own right. I'll always rank 1 as the best main story and Octo Expansion as the best expansion, but I still loved playing them when they first came out. With this era basically over, who knows where are humanoid cephalopods will explore next?
As for the Splatfests themselves... err maybe adding a third wheel wasn't the best idea in the long run. Each fest was basically a one-sided affair, with a certain shark-loving octoling taking the most wins. I get that it's hard to balance a huge multiplayer event like this (you're talking to a long-time Altador Cup player), but things felt super-skewed this time around. I doubt adding a fourth item would be much help either, but that's just me.
Whatever comes with Nintendo's new hardware, I hope they can take this franchise even further. Until that day comes, I'll still be playing in the Splatlands so I'm ready for 'em. However, there are other places that still need my attention... and a lot more coming down the line.

Thanks for joining me on this Grand Festival throwback. More Splatoon and other Switch clips to come!
Stay fresh, folks.

I never played Splatoon 1, but the game still holds a special place in my heart, and I know it means so much to so many people. I wanted to get this piece done as a farewell to a game that was super impactful to my life.

Within the next hour, we all officially bid farewell to the Splatoon 1 Online Servers as they're shut down
Thousands of fanart, tons of streams, and so many heartfelt messages of love and fond memories of this silly little IP Nintendo took a chance on back in 2015
I owe a lot to Splatoon! I started my blog back in the day and got to connect with so many people, share my little stories, my victories, my defeats, and even the silly discourse we used to all have
I had 3000+ followers on my last blog that I got to share so much good creativity and posts and fun with, and it was a blessing and a fantastic opportunity
Thank you to those new and old who stick it out with me here! I hope to continue to share the love of the fandom that has helped bring this game to the success it has now
Goodbye, Splatoon 1!

This is where we say farewell.
And the wind, it feels a little colder now.
It really is hard to believe that the Splatoon 1 servers (along with the rest of the Wii U/3DS library) are shut down now. It's such a weird feeling, to say the least.
I have no idea where I would be if I never got into Splatoon 1 back then. It's done so much for me. Got me interested in a genre I had little to no interest in before, helped me improve my art, met so many great people who are mutuals and friends, hell I even got into making OCs, which I've never really done/had much interest in doing before.
Plus just being within the fandom during its lifetime, I've said it before and I'll say it again, it was one of those "You've had to have been there" things. It was just an amazing experience all around.
If you told me over a decade ago that this series would do all that for me, I would probably think you're crazy.
And at the very least, there's Pretendo, so the servers aren't truly gone, just not officially supported by Nintendo anymore. I'll keep an eye on it, in case I ever feel like trying it out for myself.
But for the time being, thank you so much Splatoon 1.
For everything you've done.

Chen Hui-Chieh entered the city under the cover of night, and after having settled her business, she left before the sun had risen. She bade farewell to an old friend*, and took a boat down the river, the light on the prow crashing through the fog and night.
"My thanks to you two Tianshi for accompanying me on my journey so far, but now we go our separate ways." weibo post
Assuming this is her post-Vernal Winds unless it actually takes place after the next Yan event though I doubt it
*vague if just one friend (Lin) or multiple, would you count Waai Fu as an old friend idk
I left the Tianshi in the line even thought it sounds a little awkward because I think that's who the 2 mob ferrymen in the background are...

A Eulogy for Splatoon 1
We were there at the end, when the rotation changed, and we were finally kicked out.  I let my son have the last dance, as I had said my farewells the night before.  And as I played that night, I realized that I’d forgotten just how much fun the original game was.  It was unpolished and unbalanced, but it was fun.  The specials were so hilariously OP, but it was hard to get mad at them.  And you know, I think that made it better for casuals and newbies as well.  Even if you were unskilled, you could still contribute if you stayed alive long enough to build up a special!  Can’t take the meta too seriously if at any time, you're likely to get a Killer Wail big enough to take up the entire screen to your face!
The weapons, too…. Quite a few of them made the Splatoon 3 versions seem positively stunted in comparison.  (Trislosher, my beloved, you had range?!  OH MY PRECIOUS DEATH BUCKET, I MISSED YOU!)
The levels!  Original Mahi Mahi!  Saltspray Rig!  FLANKS FOR DAYS!
Rainmaker!  Oh my gosh, OG rainmaker.  I forgot it shot tornadoes!  And through walls!  It was amazing!  Was it OP?  Well, kind of.  But I think that was a fair trade off for being number one on everyone’s hit-list if you were holding it.  With the (neutered) modern version, it’s all risk and responsibility with no perks.  No one wants to pick up the Rainmaker because it makes you a sitting duck.  You may as well carry a sign saying, “GANK ME!”.
No, no. I don’t want this to turn into just shitting on 3.  But I honestly don’t know how I can go back to it after remembering what we lost.  3 is competitive.  3 is just plain sweaty.
But Splatoon 1?  That was joy.
One final reminiscence.  I have a clear memory of playing Turf War on Mahi Mahi, with my trusy N-Zap 89, and my fave battle tune, Friend List/Shellfie, playing. Jumping onto the raised platforms as the song hits its energetic chiptune riff, ink flying everywhere... yes, that was pure, unadulterated joy.
Woomy in peace, old friend.  Woomy.

A few screenshots from my farewell play session of Splatoon 1.
Splatoon is a franchise that's very important to me. 2 is the game I credit most with helping me discover and explore my gender, so I can't really describe how emotional it was to go back to the first one and give my teen self closure by swapping her over to a girl inkling in the game's final hours and try to get as high up in ranked as possible.
I wouldn't be who I am today without these games. I'll miss you, Splatoon 1.
