Fumito Ueda was inspired by… Galaxy Express 999 (1979).

Ueda has cited the Galaxy Express 999 manga series as one of his influences. Watching the film they made in the middle of its run, I could see a lot of Ico and also some Shadow of the Colossus.

It made me think of Gulliver’s Travels, Alice in Wonderland and Firefly as we follow the boy, Tetsuro, visiting different planets. On a planet called Titan, Tetsuro is given a gun by an old woman that turns out to be ‘the only cosmo gun capable of killing machine men’. Ueda's games feature special weapons that are uniquely effective against the antagonists.

Spoilers for the movie ahead!

It prefigures Ghost in the Shell. There's a character called Tochiro who, moments before his death, gets Tetsuro to activate a machine that vaporizes his body and transfers his consciousness into the supercomputer of his best friend's ship, 'Arcadia'. Maetel, one of two Yorda-like figures, explains to Tetsuro, "I am a copy of your mother in her youth. I am a shadow in the form of a human. When I grow old, I get a copy of a new body. That is how I survive through the ages and travel through time." Both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus feature characters whose bodies are vessels for other consciousnesses (Yorda for The Queen and Wander for Dormin). With the line ‘I had become a witch who controlled time’, it actually sounded more like a warning against plastic surgery.

The castle in the movie gets destroyed.

The other Yorda-like figure is Claire whose mother forced her to trade in her body for one made of glass. Her appearance is reminiscent of petrified Yorda and she has a power that makes her glow which she uses not to open Idol Gates but to save Tetsuro from Queen Promethium.

At the end, Maetel says to Tetsuro, ‘From now on, I will be a woman who lives on only in your memories. I will be nothing more than an illusion of your young boy’s heart, a phantom of your youth.’ The lyrics of 'You Were There' for me carry a similar feeling of nostalgia.

We need a Wonderlandian word for Princess! Help me out...

As someone who loves the idea of there being a Wonderlandian language (or at the very least, a pseudo-language) that they speak in throughout the Underland, I think there needs to be a word for "princess".

I mean, just think about it---Red is always calling Chloe 'princess' and 'boo', so Chloe needs something to call her as well! And I mean, I know Bridget's title 'Queen of Hearts' is more an ode to her whole cards theme, and she's actually the Empress of Wonderland. While that would make Red an heiress more than a princess, I still think there would a word for it! Plus, Ella might have called Bridget by this term at some point, so it can be used in that way too.

If you look below the cut, there's a few words I've collected (some are canon within the Alice In Wonderland world, others are my own ideas which you can feel free to nab and use yourself). Use those as inspiration and use those beautiful brains so we can think of something cute for Chloe to use to refer to Red as!

*telethesia = the ability to know that something has happened or is in a place without the use of the five main senses. This can be used to slightly predict an outcome or stay in touch with Wonderland when on the surface (Auradon), often in the form of calls or a looking glass.

Oh boy, I hope my explanation will be understood.

So, in Japanese Mikuni uses the words 御託 and 御託宣 and hopefully I managed to make a distinction between them because if you have noticed it's the same word but the latter has one more kanji.

御託宣 (gotakusen), has the meanings: oracle; revelation; divine message. 御託 (gotaku) referred to words of great importance or authoritative statements. The last kanji 宣 is more commonly seen in official or public contexts and has the meaning of "declaration"

While 御託宣 is the original term for a divine message,

御託 in modern Japanese is used more commonly in a negative sense with the meaning of pretentious talk.

Misono's spell is pretty awesome if he can nullify magic and illusions. His incantation is based on Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass, however in regard to the names, I couldn't find references...Perhaps some of you might know? What do you think is the meaning of "Good Morning Hollow?"

Tsubaki doesn't specify what he wants Sensei to do for his little sister.

When sentences end with the particle を (wo), which marks the direct object, the verb is implied from context. Tsubaki wanted his little sister to be happy and based on that, I translated "Sensei, give "Tsubaki..." Since he doesn't finish his sentence, I wanted it to be understood as "Give Tsubaki happiness". I hope I made sense!

The chipped bowl is a reference to Kenji Miyazawa's poem, "The Morning of the Last Farewell" dedicated to his sister.

There's another poem called "Spring and Asura (mental sketch modified)" that Tsubaki quotes in chapter 57.5 that you can read here (the chapter is in volume 12). So yeah, let me know what you thought about this chapter!

Fic I spent the least time on: Off The Clock basically wrote itself.

Favourite thing I wrote: Cazador's Adventures In Heavy Metal (all four parts). It's hard to put into words how much this story means to me. It's easily the best thing I've ever written. It's been loved so much, sometimes I even felt like it became a mini fandom of its own with all the comments and enthusiasm (I still return to them... a lot. I love each and everyone of you ❤️). Writing and sharing this story made me find myself as a writer and I will always, always cherish it.

Favourite fics I read this year: It's hard to pick favourites! But I'll try.

Munson's Choice by Elefeather is definitely one of my all time favourites, super clever and well written (Stranger Things fandom)

Writing goals for 2025: Spend less time staring at stats. They don't mean shit. Write original stories. Perhaps get back to that novel I never finished, but I'm not putting pressure on that. Write more fanfic because that's what I love the most.

New works for 2025: Finish The Fire And The Ashes Of His Grace, but other than that... I have no idea! The road is open and the Google Docs is empty and what could be more beautiful.

24 - Dance With the Dragon by Dark Sarah

Congratulations, you've landed on one of the songs that's officially on my list of Songs That Would Make Great Dreamling Fics (That I'll Never Write)! Based entirely on the video linked above and the story that it's part of, this would be a fantasy AU where the vibes are 'Labyrinth meets Alice in Wonderland' with hints of Phantom of the Opera, Beauty and the Beast, and Hades and Persephone sprinkled over for flavor.

The basic idea is that Hob is trapped in some alternate reality and trying to collect a key from each realm he passes through to be able to get back to his own reality. No idea at this juncture what the first realm/key would be - maybe something with the fae, maybe hell, idk. The second realm is Dream's. Do I want to keep to the source and make him a dragon who lost his wings for hubris and arrogance and got banished from the 'upper world' to rule this dark 'underworld'? Maybe, but that's also very Lucifer-ish. So maybe I'd blend in something closer to his canon. In any case. Hob tries to sneak into Dream's castle, get the key, sneak out. He does not succeed and is taken before Dream. There is antagonistic chemistry. There is sneering haughty-in-my-superiority taunting and 'let's be reasonable' demands. There is at least one challenge set, there is Hob as a 'guest' of Dream's until he completes the challenge ('So I'm a prisoner, then.' 'Oh no, you may leave any time you like, but you will gain no key until you complete my challenge.' 'But what good is leaving without the key, when I'll just be stuck here forever??' 'I fail to see how that is my problem'), there is continued verbal fencing and sparring and building UST as Hob struggles with the challenge, there is an elaborate ball (masquerade?) held, there is a waltz charged with so much tension and raging attraction it's a wonder the room doesn't spontaneously combust. There is at least one moment of 'Oh no under different circumstances this could be More™️' and genuine understanding/connection between them. In the end, Hob finally succeeds at the challenge, earns the key and departs on a note of uneasy flirtation - Dream bowing and kissing his hand in farewell as he acknowledges his defeat, lingering intense smirky eye-contact as Hob goes, that kind of thing.

Potentially this can go on, if I continue the thread of the source storyline but lean on Dream's canon for details. Perhaps collecting the three keys would give him the means to restore Orpheus/free Orpheus/something to do with Orpheus, and he's never had the means to collect the other two keys on his own, but now that Hob has collected the first and second, if Dream accompanies him while he collects the third, they can both use the keys to achieve their ends - Hob to go back to his own world and Dream to restore Orpheus. So Dream leaves Lucienne in charge of the realm and follows after Hob, catches up to him, proposes they cooperate etc; they quest for the third key and finally resolve that UST in the process. When they get the third key, and present it to let's say the Fates, they're told they cannot both claim reward - and they put the choice to Dream, his lover or his son. Let Hob go back to his world/his regular life, or be 'selfish' and choose to cash in for his own goal instead. It could end here with Dream choosing to let Hob go, which could be passing a test by the Fates and as reward for passing he still gets to save/restore Orpheus. Or, the longer and angstier version, he chooses Orpheus and thereby casts Hob into yet another alternate realm, and the next leg of the story is Dream's quest to find Hob again and seek his forgiveness, and find a way to get him home. Hob can't exactly fault Dream for choosing his son over this outsider human that he's started sleeping with, but it still hurts, still feels on some level like betrayal, and while he might like to freely offer forgiveness it's more plausible that there will have to be some earning done. Eventually of course they reconcile and find a way to get Hob home and then of course establish a means by which they can continue to cross worlds to see each other.

Anyway this is far more a mental exercise in mapping one story to another and seeing where they might translate than it is a viable fic idea; it's far too grand in scope and not nearly detailed enough for me to realistically take it on. Mostly I just want the enemies-to-lovers fraught-with-tension ballroom dancing scene.

its starsaints carnival! and i can tell you that as its not a major spoiler :D

basically, as it's based on alice in wonderland, there is a queen of hearts referred to as 'her royal heart' by the starsaints. if someone 'on the edge of their childhood' (around 12 years old) makes a wish that amuses or intrigues the queen, then that child is sent to the carnival, and must fufill their wish there before their 13th birthday. failure to do so results in the starsaints taking 'pity' for that child and letting them 'say farewell to the flesh', aka to become a starsaint who is basically a ghost with scrambled memories. i would explain how they become starsaints, but i want to keep it secret :] regardless, that's how the main 6 end up in the carnival - they all made a wish, and they all share the same birthday of august 31st.

here are some of my favorite things because I have never been here before

Favorite movie: American Psycho (2000) (also, yes, I have a crush on Christian Bale, and, yes, the sequel is dead to me)

Favorite book: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (my url is based off my AIW au - ask me about it, I dare you)

Favorite musical: Ride the Cyclone (Gus Halper's portrayal of Mischa Bachinski was SO HOT. and then he got that chin job)

Favorite food: chocolate (any chocolate at all I am not picky just don't give me coconut ones and also I'm allergic to oranges)

Favorite color: hot pink (almost as hot as me. lol just kidding I'm a 3/10)

I'm also obsessed with writing, musical theatre, classic literature, roleplay, horror movies, horror games, Marina Diamandis, gore, the inherent eroticism of the love-hate relationship, and cosplay.

Also, time to out myself for majority of my songs are not mainstream music...

MWTWB by Amalee

The entire album by Amalee relates to her Vtuber character, The Monarch and the backstory to her. While I like all the songs on the album, MWTWB (Messing with the Wrong Bitch) is my favourite because it has strong Vil from Twisted Wonderland vibes. That's honestly a big reason why I love the song so much. However, besides that I love the entire theme of the song is "Fuck Around and Find Out". My favourite lyric to the song is, "Uh-oh! Keep making me mad and it will be off with your head." because I love a good Alice in Wonderland reference.

2. The Rumbling/Under the Tree by SiM

I know this is cheating, but I believe these two songs need to be listened in conjunction. These are the two openings to the final season of Attack on Titan. The Rumbling is written in Eren's perspective and Under the Tree is written in Mikasa's. What I love about these two songs is how they capture the essence of the two characters. Both have changed significantly since season one and this change has caused a lot of heart ache (and death).

Eren is focused on what he feels is his "duty" with lyrics such as, "If I lose it all, slip and fall, I will never look away." At this point in the series, Eren feels there is no other path he can take, no matter the cost.

Meanwhile, Mikasa's song has heartbreaking lyrics like "Where are you at? / Where have you been?" and "Why oh why, why oh why/Don't you want to stay with me?"

This truly feels like the two are in conversation with one another, with Under the Tree Mikasa's response to Eren's song. That kind of duality always gets to me in songs. I love when songs connect to one another and these two do it perfectly.

3. homura by LiSA

Oh look, another anime song. How predictable of me. Anyways, while most people cite Gurenge as their favourite Kimetsu no Yaiba song, I think homura is my favourite.

Even if this song wasn't from an anime, the lyrics to this farewell song are heartbreaking. Right at the beginning, the "Sayonara, arigatou koe no kagiri" ("Goodbye" and "thank you" at the top of my voice") pulls at my heartstrings. The next part, "Kanashimi yori motto daiji na koto" or, "What is more important than grief?" really hits me hard.

Also, my link is to LiSA's performance on The First Take and her voice is breathtaking. Absolutely stunning.

4. Avid by Hiroyuki Sawano

From the anime Eighty-Six, this soft, but powerful song always makes me want to cry. The repetition of "Don't you get there?/ It calls, it calls" makes this song feel haunting, like someone long gone talking to you. Which, given Eighty-Six's plot, makes sense.

5. Love From The Other Side by Fall Out Boy

Oh, look, a mainstream song that I could play at work and not be accused of only listening to anime songs. Finally, right? (Not that anyone accuses me of that, but they definitely could and get away with it.)

Uh, I know I've talked about this song in a prior ask somewhere on my blog, but to repeat myself: I like Fall Out Boy. I'm not a huge fan, but I have a smattering of songs from them that I really like. This is one of their newest songs and I was immediately hooked as soon as I heard the lyric, "What would you trade the pain for? Not sure". I'm just always here for songs that have questions to the listener that make you pause and think for a second. I also love the reference in, "We were a hammer to the Statue of David". My minimal two years of art history jumped in glee.

I’ll leave it just the way you left it. I’ll leave the berry stains in the carpet, and the garden overtaken with wildflowers. The burnt spot on the counter above the stove will be there to greet you with the memory of every meal we made together. Your side of the bed will be made, as well as his spot in the center. Mine will be empty.

You asked me why I packed my things into a suitcase so long ago, and I didn’t know how to tell you, then. I didn’t know how to tell you that I’ve had a life made of empty rooms that I built to be full of life. I didn’t know how to tell you that the dark siren song of obsolescence has been the countermelody to my waking days since I was eight years old.

I didn’t know how to tell you that I wasn’t preparing to leave, but to be left.

The first house the deafening silence drove me from was my own. Maybe ours will be the last. The streets are cold, but the decrescendo of love’s sweet melody comes with a soul crushing chill that haunts me far more.
