“Unico, I Feel Lonely” original acrylic painting on a 12” x 12” canvas. From one of my childhood favorites, The Fantastic Adventures of Unico (1981-1983) a story of a small unicorn who is banished by the gods, due to his special power of making everyone around him happy. The West Wind takes pity on him and hides him away in dark new lands. He makes friends with demons, cats, and witches, only to eventually leave them before the Night Wind finds him. Both very cute and heartbreaking. Unico is my favorite childhood animation by anime legend, Osamu Tezuka. It’s a story of a baby unicorn that just wants to spread love and joy even though the gods and universe wish to stop him. His beautiful guardian goddess - the West Wind tried to protect him at all costs. This piece took on a special meaning for me in these strange, dark and scary times. Don’t let fear and anger over take you, but stay brave and don’t run away from it. West Wind is overprotective of Unico and forces him to run when challenges and danger arise- but Unico isn’t afraid to face them head on and defeat evil to protect those he loves and to spread his message of joy.
