Okay, I don't know if this counts as it was the perception of death, but here goes. Unico is an old anime (I think recently rereleased as a Manga) about a baby unicorn who's heart is so pure and good the gods were jealous. The north wind tries to protect the baby unicorn from the god's jealous by hiding him away, but inevitably no matter where he ends up he find someone who needs help and uses his power to help him and thus the North wind must take him away to hide him anew.

So when i was really little (6-7ish) I found a bootleg copy at the local video rental place (not a big chain like blockbuster, just a little mom and pop store) And what with how translations were in the 80's, esp bootleg translations, all that I typed above? Yeah NONE of it was explained. All I knew what little Unicorn was dropped off in the place and helping a little girl stop an evil wizard from turning people into living puppets and that's all I needed to know. At least until after the final battle, when Unico collapsed to the ground after winning, unconscious. And then two giant invisible hands emerged from the sky and cradled the seemingly lifeless body of the unicorn and carried him upward and the little girl and all the people were sad and crying and guess how my little brain interpreted those events. I was a wreck, because heroic sacrifices where the hero really was dead for good wasn't a thing in media for that age range. Like yeah, heroes could seem to die, but would be revived by the power of love or something. Not their bodies are carried to heaven and everyone is sad. Mom took the video back to the store THAT DAY because of how much it had upset me. It would be a decade and a half later before I learned the little unicorn was actually completely fine and the people were just sad he had to move away to somewhere else because they would miss him

fuck it, i'm curious. reblog and tag with the first fictional death to ever rewrite your brain chemistry and/or make you cry like a baby. mine was ares from the underland chronicles (who, for context, was a giant bat.) to this day i will weep if i think too hard about it. okay, go.

In a 2020 demo reel from Hong Kong based company Simage Animation and Media Ltd, a mysterious animation has surfaced featuring Astro Boy and Tezuka Star System characters, including Atom, Pluto, Son Goku (My Songoku, not the Dragon Ball character), Rock Holmes, Hosuke Sharaku, Hyakkimaru, Unico, Ambassador Magma, Shunsaku Ban, Siddhartha (Tezuka's Buddha), Triton, Big X, and Princess Sapphire.

The animation depicts Atom and other Tezuka Star System protagonists battling Pluto in a fictional Japanese city.

The purpose of the animation is unknown. It does not appear to have any connection to Astro Boy Reboot or Team Phoenix (which was released after this animation was made).

NEWS: A new Tezuka themed gashapon set has been revealed. This set, called "Osamu Tezuka character sitting," will be produced by Bandai. This set will release in Japan sometime in September of this year.
