Unico is my favorite childhood animation by anime legend, Osamu Tezuka. It’s a story of a baby unicorn that just wants to spread love and joy even though the gods and universe wish to stop him. His beautiful guardian goddess - the West Wind tried to protect him at all costs. This piece took on a special meaning for me in these strange, dark and scary times. Don’t let fear and anger over take you, but stay brave and don’t run away from it. West Wind is overprotective of Unico and forces him to run when challenges and danger arise- but Unico isn’t afraid to face them head on and defeat evil to protect those he loves and to spread his message of joy. The Icelandic legend known as the nykur is an equine foe to dread. It emerges from the water and cries to draw in a rider. Once the victim mounts, the nykur dives down, drowning it’s victim—much like the Scottish Kelpie.The sounds of ice cracking on frozen water are said to be the evil water horse’s neighs. This piece will be shown at the 5th annual Unicorn Art Show in Minneapolis, Minnesota in early April. Come check it out if you’re in the area or you can make it up. Finally finished last week’s piece for Mermay. I did an actual background, what a treat. Will most likely appear in the #otherworldlyartsmpls #unicornartshow7 as long as the print gets here in time. Should be fine, but I put it off longer than I should have. If you were to ask me to design a toy line right now, I think it would feature these two. A girl and her seahorse. She’d probably have to be a princess too for maximum consumer marketability. Maybe I could make the seahorse the princess instead.
