aand some more things i drew recently? i liked the base thingy i made so yeah. i like lantern mice a lot actually. plus i am usually playing with a mod that makes slugcats glow and it made me think that it would be fun if being lantern mouse slugcat was the reason for it

the oc one still has no name sadly :( but they're friends with scav colony places nearby to their usual shelter and like to collect stuff. maybe i will change design at some point because i took details from a picrew and it makes me go meh about it for a bit, but i like the overall concept and wont take the spines and weird ears away

super lazy concept for a slugcat lol (also with the bombs, you have to use them before the cycle ends, or else you’ll blow up. and for the serrated teeth, their stronger, but you get less food pips from food due to the teeth ripping the thing apart)

alright i'll bite finally. what is rain world.

rain world is a speculative biology survival platformer game where you play as a lost slugcat trying to survive in the ruins of a society that once was. its got a lot of really interesting worldbuilding! I'd say its setting is post-apocalyptic, but its take on that kind of setting is very unique. its definitely a lot more immersive in making you feel like a wild animal, where you sift through the ruins of something you couldn't possibly comprehend. and also dying. lots of dying and being killed

i love recommending the game to people but i need to express that IT IS HARD. it can be brutal during the learning curve of getting used to the controls and learning how to get around predators. its not unplayable!! but id definitely say you should look into it if you want a challenge. HEAVILY recommend playing it on pc with a keyboard. playing with a controller is ass

the dlc (rain world downpour) was a fanmade mod several years in the making, before it was taken inhouse to be supported officially by the devs. it is considered an official alternate canon because of this! you get 5 more campaigns with all kinds of new mechanics, predators, and regions.

rain world has one more dlc coming, adding one campaign (for a very special slugcat!). this time it's being made by the original dev team (along with some people from the modding community it looks like).

other than that, it's modding community is fucking HUGE. there are so many fun mods adding a variety of things to the game. from replacing sound effects with funnier sound effects, to full fledged original campaigns.

other than all that, i recommend this game if you like exploring, speculative biology, and Robots Who Make You Sad.

It's funny how mad people get when you don't think of slugcats as being humanlike in intelligence when all "evidence" for what comes from the fanmade, non-canonical MSC. It was Videocult's intention that the slugcat is closer to the level of a subway rat - at most able to guess that the structures around it had some purpose, but never grasp what it was. While the MSC team intended their mod to be an alternate universe from early on for more freedom, a labor of love for the community more than an extension of Videocult's ideas. If you cannot accept that then you are disrespecting canon and authorial intent.

I had this fanmade Slugcat I only ever did one thing with and decided to revisit them and make a somewhat anthro version after I've been reading an entire comic series on Comicfury about Slugcats as anthro (one made by @pansear-doodles I think, or at least the artwork is) I actually also wrote some dialogue which I may or may not turn into a comic in the future if I have the motivation

what ddo you think would truly feel like more rain world, then?

I don't know to be honest.

Although I would probably say the thing that sticks out most about Downpour in contrast to the base game is probably the slugcats- mind you not because they're ocs or anything, but rather because Downpour inherently opens up a problem: How do you expand further on gameplay in order to keep things fresh and new. You certainly can add more slugcats with no skills and let the world changes adjust things, but it's something that would largely feel dull when you already have Monk, Survivor, and Hunter who, at their core, are very simple modifications of each other. Hunters 'big skill' is only the ability to carry an extra weapon. Downpour solves this by making the slugcats you play as have highly unique abilities you can use, and this does make things fun! I like what they did with all of them. But it also creates a big contrast against the relatively meek and mundane skills of the original set of slugcats- something that I think was very intentional in the OG game and also has the side effect of making Downpour feel more 'inorganic' and game-y. There's an effect around it that makes them feel a bit more like characters over organisms in a overarching system, they're a little closer to what you would expect of a protagonist. They have an aspect of power or skill to them that inherently changes how they fit into the world.

In contrast Survivor never really 'feels' like a protagonist. They fit the roll of small animal squeezed into an ecosystem, and even with skill your tools to deal with that system are largely mundane. You can throw things hard, jump and slide. The closest the game has to a powerup is getting luminescence. If you're particularly skilled you can carry two weapons at once (but not in both hands, just one with you as backup) and I feel like that's pretty important to grounding them as prey in an ecosystem. It does a lot to give your predators more tools to kill you than you get for fighting them, it helps push that feeling of a mouse standing against a cat or eagle. Hunter, while serving the role of predator slugcat, still feels like a prey animal whos learned how to fight back rather than something thats expected to be a predator of red lizards. When you can backflip across the screen or make bombs on demand, that feeling is something you lose even if the challenge is still there.

From a game standpoint its very obvious why the slugcats have abilities in Downpour- you could need to massively change the world your playing on in order to make more 'basic' slugcats feel good to play again after already playing them multiple times. If you wanted to keep the feeling, I guess you could try doing a storyline from the POV of another creature like the lizards, or set it in a different area of the world. For a fanmade expansion (and in general), its a lot easier to do more slugcats and give them skills to make playing them new and fun. But you give something up with that.

Yes I like Rainworld

This slugcat is very afraid of everything due to being hunted a lot. It can't control it's constant shaking, but will try its best to be courageous.

Pros: Fast speed (a little over rivs), invisibility ability, can breathe underwater.

Cons: Can only hold a spear for a certain period of time when around a predator, due to shaking, and soon dropping the spear, more preds spawn in this campaign.

Goal: Find the secret to true courage.

Gender: Non-binary.

How to unlock: Complete Hunter's campaign.

Food pips needed for sleep: 8 (max of 11).
