About 6020: You turning a white character into a black or brown character because you cannot relate to the white character unless they are the same skin tone as you is the racist take here.
BEFORE some toxic person says, “hehe, says the straight cis white man saying this,” I’m a mixed black woman. I grew up with characters who were the opposite gender or me, a different background than me, and are a different skin tone than me. And yet, I still loved these characters, because of their CHARACTER. I can relate to Peter Parker because I was once a shy and awkward geeky girl in high school who did not know how to talk to a cute guy. I am entertained by a character like Kim Possible because we kind of have similarities, having a mother in the medical field and being dorky and all goo-goo eyes around guys we like.
I don’t give a damn if a character is the same skin tone as me, all I care about is their personality traits and what they bring to the table in that world.
I have integrity. I am currently in the making of making a modern day fantasy story with my non-fandom OCs, both of whom are black characters, but their story is based around how skilled they are at magic and how they navigate their own personal demons and their adult life all while taking down a corrupt magic user. It annoys me to see racebent characters because it’s a waste of time and talent and I just ignore it. You can base a POC character off of a popular white character, but they cannot just be “black version of Popular white character” “Asian version of popular white character,” or literally any minority race version of a popular white character.
The racism in fandom and art communities is so astounding sometimes.

Fandom Problem#6020:
Im just going to assume everyone who screams "JUST MAKE UR OWN CHARACTERS!!!!!1!" at people who want to add poc to monochrome white casts are privileged white people at best and racist at worst. I'm sorry I have a favorite character I already like that happens to be white and can't invest the time nor energy to create a whole new ass character for the same world to fill the same space of my favorite char when I can just..........have my favorite character in a different shade. jesus fucking christ.
And I'm only talking about racebending WHITE characters, mind, as there are a disproportionate amount of them and it wouldn't hurt if a few were.... not white. For example: musical fandom. stage musical is a different medium to movies. remakes of movies, even if they modernize and upgrade and cast poc into white roles, are still gonna have the same cast when you watch them over and over whereas you can watch 5 different shows of a musical and not get the same show twice unless it's a recording. you're gonna have actors and actresses of many ethnicities playing the same characters. heather duke was played by a white actress in the movie, an asian actress in the off-broadway musical, and lately she's usually black in west end. is that an issue? she's still the same character so to speak, but are all those iterations of heather duke not valid because they're not white republican shannen doherty? (granted, musical heather duke is a strange case because she's the ONLY character whose race is consistently changing but i digress)
make your own character, if I wanted an oc or a self-insert I'd write original fiction no one would read.

Posting a compilation of responses to Fandom Problem #6020.
Anon:
If you want representation, create your own story Fandom is not activism
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anon:
Except you people almost never racebend white characters. You racebend other minorities. You racebend anime characters with Japanese names who live in Japan and speak Japanese and have their whole family live in Japan with Japanese names and speak Japanese and claim that the original character was "white." You take characters who are half-black, half-white and say they "aren't black enough" and make them completely black, racebending the white parent ONLY for the sake of racebending their kid. You racebend half-black, half-Asian characters for the same reason, they "aren't black enough." The overwhelming majority of people who complain about racebending don't care about a character's race, they're pointing out YOU'RE ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY DOING THIS TO CHARACTERS WHO ARE OTHER MINORITIES, WHO DESERVE REPRESENTATION TOO, WHILE SLAPPING IRL PEOPLE WHO MATCH THE DESCRIPTION OF THE ORIGINAL CHARACTER IN THE FACE!!!!!!!!!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anon:
I am pretty sure that modern fandom was not created specifically by POC. It was created by majorly women who were really into Star Track, completely unrelated to any skin colour any of them might have had
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anon:
“BLACKWASHING IS DONE WITH RESPECT AND LOVE FOR A CHARACTER AND THEIR FANDOM.” No, it’s done out of hatred of white people. If you really loved this character, you’d love him or her as a white person. If you can’t love a white character, you are racist.

RaCiSt!!!": On twitter right now people are throwing a fit over official splatoon art of Marina having a slightly lighter shade of brown than normal. Again. AGAIN. AGAIN!! Miss me with this fucking bullshit! You clowns have said this for a decade now and EVERYONE can see right through you! Every time some artist draws a brown character one hexcode lighter because GOD FORBID ANY OF YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT LIGHTING EXISTS OR THAT MAYBE PEOPLE WANT TO EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT SHADES, there's a goddamn TIDAL WAVE of THE STUPIDEST, MOST HATEFUL PEOPLE YOU'LL EVER MEET screaming MUH RACISM at the top of their lungs. Harassing artists minding their own goddamn business (ESPECIALLY if they're from Japan!). Smugly taking the art and darkening with that utterly insufferable "Heh, I fixed it :)))" passive-aggressive attitude. Don't you sit there and fucking lie to me, you little shit. I've been on this hellsite since 2012. I've seen every single one of these """whitewashing""" controversies you neanderthals start and every single one of them has accomplished nothing except drive people away, piss them off, or inspired them to make ACTUAL Whitewashed art to show you what Whitewashing actually looks like and also to MOCK YOU. This is not pissing on my leg and telling me it's rain, this is grabbing ten of your buddies, telling them chug a gallon of water, circle around me, whip out your cocks, shower me in gold and then casually mock me for not taking an umbrella because "oh man it's so stormy out :)" Also Japanese twitter has had enough of your shit and they're criticizing you for acting this way and then shamelessly redrawing their characters as being black and acting like that's how they're """supposed""" to be because Asians just aren't """POC""" enough for you. Don't ever call anyone a "Colonizer" again, because that kind of shit is GENUINE Colonizer mindset because you self-righteous shitheads disrespect other cultures and can't leave people the fuck alone. THAT is why people get mad at you. It's not racism. It's NEVER been racism; it's because you're all insufferable twits who harass everyone around you over NOTHING and then have the GALL to be FLAGRANT HYPOCRITES ABOUT IT with an obvious double standard! Build a bridge and get the FUCK over yourselves!

Anon:
One thing I find EXTREMELY odd about a fandom I am in surrounding an anime I like is the racewashing/blackwashing art, now I'm not gonna get into my opinions on racewashing because wether you support it or not you have to admit what I'm about to say seems really dodgy In this anime there are multiple main characters of mixed race, majority of them being half european half japanese, I'm not sure how much representation of mixed people there are in anime but I can only really think of 3 anime where there are main mixed race characters, most of them only having 1 or 2 mixed race characters, but the anime I am talking about has about 4 mixed race main characters For some reason this fandom absolutely loves to racewash these mixed race characters and barely does it to any other characters. They always make them fully black (not even blasian) and they say they do it to add "more black representation" to the anime Now there are many reasons I find this dodgy, 1 being that of course they only ever do this with the mixed race characters, (or at the very least these are the most popular characters to do this to) not the fully asian characters, not the fully white characters, not to any character of any other race/ethnicity, not even the non human characters who don't have a canonical race/ethnicity, only the mixed race characters Apparently a lot of other fanbases with half white half japanese main characters have these problems too, and a lot of real life mixed people say that the people who only ever racewash mixed characters imply that these characters are "too white for them", which is of course a very racist thing to say about mixed race people who are half white Another reason I find this odd is that, A. A lot of the anime is set in Japan, so of course a lot of the characters will be Japanese or half Japanese, and I'm not saying that there aren't black people in Japan, but obviously majority of the people who live in Japan are Japanese B. There are black characters in the anime! Main characters too, now I can't speak on how good the representation is as I'm not black, but from what I can tell a lot of black people love this anime and the black characters (not to mention a lot of the people I see who racewash the mixed characters are not black, most I see are white people) so I don't see the need to add more representation to the anime by racewashing non black characters, let alone racewashing the mixed race characters who also seem to have a small amount of representation in anime. Like at the very least if someone wanted to race swap a character they'd do it with one of the many white characters and not the mixed race characters, or at the very very least they'd make the mixed race characters blasian and not fully black, or draw the non human characters who don't have canonical races as humans and make them black or any race they want, like I don't get why they're so obsessed with making mixed half white half asian people fully black In conclusion: this whole thing just confuses me and gives off extremely dodgy and racist vibes

6020: The problem people have with racebending is not about black people wanting representation and some other racist reasons.
No, the problem people have with it, is that racebending is only allowed if you turn a character black.
You are not allowed to turn them anything else, be is Asian, Mediterranean, and especially not white. Because then you are "whitewashing" and clearly a racist who should be condemned.

Honestly, I think original op is right. People only get pissy at others for making a character black. But if a black character is turned white, we get told not to be so sensitive even though their iteration is racist. It ain't racist to make a white or white passing character black. You all just hate black people getting representation

People being angry about racebending are the problem. If you want to hate poc in the fandoms created and run by poc, maybe you should get out and leave our safe space. Fandom is made by and for poc so they can have an escape from reality, but hard to do that when the racists flood in to push us out.
STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT RACEBENDING!
BLACKWASHING DOES NOT EXIST AND IS NOT THE SAME AS WHITEWASHING!

It is a red flag if someone is angry about racebending. If they are angry about a white character being turned black, they have racist thoughts. It is ALWAYS only if a character is turned black that people get angry. No one cares if it is other races. Only when the characters are made black.

6020 is so weird to me because okay swap out ethnicities for white characters, but it doesn't make a release any better or worse so ultimately what's the point? Race bending didn't make the 2015 reboot of Fantastic Four any less of a turd.

I just saw someone on Twitter state that "WhItE pEoPlE" only like dark skinned characters/POCs as long as they don't have stereotypical African American characteristics. You know, the ones that used to be shrilled as being stereotypical and racist? Now if you're white and you don't like these characters, you're racist. But if you're white and you create these same characters, you're racist.
You can't win with these fucknuggets.

Damn, that is a long-winded way to say "I'm racist and also I don't pay attention."
Because the claim is just straight-up wrong, to start with. People absolutely do racebend to non-Black identities with zero pushback, all the time. East Asian, South Asian, Latino, Middle Eastern, Native American... it happens all the time.
But they're right, if you take a canon POC character and racebend them to white, people are gonna say something. You know why?
Because the point is to INCREASE diversity and representation, ya walnut, not decrease it!!!
You don't racebend characters white because the majority of characters are already white! White people do not have a shortage of characters to connect with who look like them. This is not difficult to understand!
"So when Robin Hood steals from the rich and gives to the poor he's a hero, but when I steal from the POOR and give to the RICH suddenly I'm the bad guy?" <- this is what y'all sound like.
So many white characters out there. SO. MANY. But you can't be happy unless you take one of the few POC characters and turn them white? Nonwhite people can empathize with white characters all day (because yes, even after racebending there's still majority white characters out there), but the minute you have to empathize with a Black character you have to pretend he's white?
As one white person to another: y'all are fucking goofy.
And kinda racist.

If you're thinking of the post I'm thinking of, that was criticizing how (racist) people get angry or disgusted with black characters in Western media who are recognizably black while saying "THIS is how it's DONE!" (i.e. THIS is the one that gets my dick hard!) pointing at a character that can only be considered "black" because of a light tan (and often weren't even intended to be read as "black" in the first place. People think Gyaru are black when it's literally just Japanese women with heavy tans/makeup.)
(Like, since she pops up in here every once in a while, Xinyan from Genshin, a character with no black features but people (or one extremely dedicated person) want to argue is black)
Most, (not ALL because genetics are varied but but MOST because they ARE dominant traits in terms of genetics (and no one get your panties in a twist because "dominant" doesn't mean "better" it means "has a higher chance of appearing") black people have features like wider/flatter noses, bigger lips, and more textured hair. It's not racism to point out because none of those features are BAD. It's only bad to people who dislike those traits because of racism. Claiming that drawing black characters to have black features is racism is ass backwards. It's like saying you genuinely can't tell the difference between an accurate depiction of a black person and a minstrel drawing, and trying to push it off as if that makes you're the un-racist one here for only drawing black characters "pretty" (when "pretty" to you = European).

Cough cough
Xinyan from Genshin is blasian, but there are lots of people who go "but but! she is not! she is just a dark skinned asian character! she can be dark skinned without being black! she isn't your rep! she is mine! get your filthy hands away from her!"
So even if we have rep, people snatch it away from us and erase the black in them. This is why we have things like #6020. Black people never are allowed to have anything in fandoms and get pushed out.
