So I wanna jump on this cause your little ramble dredged up memories. I remember when I first watched Prime, Miko frustrated me. But that was because I was the quiet, introverted child who related more to Raf than any of the other human characters. Jack came off as too much of a know it all who cared too much about what others thought of him, but Miko cared too little. At least, that’s what kid me thought. As an adult, my perceptions have changed a little.

But to start off, I think you’re absolutely right. Miko and Jack only become a problem when they’re compared to each other. However, I think there’s a reason so many fans tend to hate Miko more than they hate Jack. So let’s over analyze and deconstruct their characters a little, shall we? Bare in mind I haven’t fully rewatched Prime in a while, but I still think my point is valid.

So. Miko. The first time we meet her, she’s drawing Arcee, and she follows Jack when he and Arcee leave the school. Presumably because she wants to ask him about his bike, or because she wants to find out more about him and “it”. Instead, she stumbles across the Autobot secret. I think this for some fans planted the seeds. Her actions can be interpreted as nosy and not minding her own business, and not respecting the privacy of others. Personally I don’t see it that way, because I genuinely don’t think she was following Jack to be rude. I think she just thought the “bike” was cool and wanted to ask him about it. But after this interaction, her behavior doesn’t really get any more respectful. She’s constantly asking questions that make the Bots uncomfortable, tends to push for answers when they don’t want to give it, is very quick to be judgmental about issues related to the Bots or Cons or war, or even issues related to Cybertron itself, she has a blatant disregard for the rules, she’s very often going against what the Bots ask of her, and she repeatedly puts herself in danger, even when it mean pulling Jack and Raf along and putting them in danger too. All of this culminates in a character who, for many, is too nosy, too rude, too loud, too inconsiderate, and reckless to an extreme.

However, all these things happen alongside the other humans. Miko only seems nosy because the other humans don’t want to probe, so she has to be the audience’s mouthpiece to pry important information out of the Bots. She’s just the one to do this the most, which is why it seems particularly egregious. She’s also a pre-teen girl, so of course she’s going to be asking questions about everything. She adores Bulkhead and the Bots, and just wants to learn more about them. When the “nosy” behavior isn’t being compared to the boys, then it’s not actually that bad. It just comes across as curious rather than insensitive or rude. And yes, sometimes she does say something judgmental, but again it only seems bad when Jack or Raf are there and they’re not making comments. If she’s saying like that when she’s with the Bots and the boys aren’t there, it sounds less harsh. It’s also understandable. She’s a human child trying to understand aspects of a culture and war that originated on an entirely different planet. Her comments may be a little tactless, but when not compared to Jack they aren’t mean or cruel or anything else like that. The final thing that people get annoyed about is her disregard for rules, orders, and safety, even when it puts the boys at risk. And I think that’s semi-valid. When she follows the Bots and the kids get stuck in the Shadow Zone, it’s made very clear she should have stayed behind. However, the boys did not have to follow her. She did not grab them and drag them along. She ran through to get cool pictures because she admires Bulkhead and the Bots and thought it would be a run of the mill mission. The boys chose to follow her. They did not have to. She did not put them in danger, even if she put herself in danger and made them feel pressured to follow. They did not have to give into that pressure. But people will point to this episode as an example of her stupidity and recklessness. Yet, in the episode with Hardshell, where she snuck out and endangered no one but perself, her behavior is no longer as bad. Yes, it is still reckless, but she is criticized less for this act of rebellion because she did not endanger others. Once again, her actions only make her dislikes when it involves the other two. When she’s exhibiting the same behavior without them there, no one seems to find the same faults.

Now Jack. Jack is…somewhat boring. And I think that’s by design. He’s supposed to be the human character that the audience can most put themselves in his place. He’s respectful, mostly calm, fairly mature, and just…a typical introverted teenage boy. I.e., what most of the target audience likely are. When we first meet him, he’s working his job at the burger place, and when he gets off work he stops to admire Arcee. He gets on her to temporarily fulfill a fantasy, as I think many boys his age would do, and then Arcee is spotted by Cons. She takes off with Jack in tow because she knows the Cons would assume he’s her ally. Eventually, her desperate escape leads her and Bee to stumble across Raf. That’s how the boys join the team. In all the interactions we see, he’s quiet, respectful of the Bots, doesn’t press for answers when they’re uncomfortable, and (almost) always willing to obey their rules for him by staying in the base when they go out. The only time we see him break rules is when someone he cares about is in danger (his mom, Arcee, one of the other kids). He does sneak out with Smokescreen in that one episode, but he generally speaking he does not follow the Bots on missions unless someone is in danger, or he’s told/invited to come along. Or instances where he’s on an outing with Arcee and she has to detour on a mission midway through the outing. That too. But to Miko haters, when she’s compared to a character who just…doesn’t cause problems for the Bots, she’s seen as the problem child instead. However, it is also because of Miko that some people hate Jack instead. Miko, for all her faults, is at least entertaining. She makes you feel things. Even if that thing is anger. Jack is a lot less entertaining by comparison, because his personality isn’t as loud.

However, just like Miko, this is only when he’s put next to her. On his own, he’s perfectly entertaining. The episode where he and Arcee meet Airaqunid is one I still remember very fondly. It’s a genuinely chilling episode, and he’s one of the best parts of it. Another episode where Jack just shines is the one where his mom his captured. And people still talk about the episode where he was in the mines with Megatron. That singular interaction was really good. Again, without Miko there to “dull him out”, he’s shown to have an actual, genuine personality. He’s loyal, brave, also reckless, and extremely intelligent. When he’s allowed to act on his own without Miko there, his character becomes one of the best parts of the episodes he stars in because we see genuine growth and development from “typical teenage boy” to “smart, brave, kind, loyal, and one of the better TF teenage boys”.

Miko and Jack, on their own, are individually great. Without the other there to highlight their faults, each of them are genuinely good characters. It’s only when they’re made to be in an episode together that they make each others worst traits all the more apparent. When Miko is with Jack, she comes across as rude, selfish, and immature. Likewise, and Jack is with Miko, he seems stuffy, boring, and like way too much of a know it all and a stickler. Quite honestly, I like them both. They’re both good characters. On their own. But when they’re together, it’s really hard not to hate one of them. Who you hate just depends on who you relate to the most.

So yeah. That was my deep dive into a pair of characters that probably wasn’t necessary but I made anyway. These are just my takes and impressions. Also, if I got any facts or episode details wrong, just let me know. Like I said, it’s been a while since I rewatched the full series.

Fully of the belief that Miko is only seen as an annoying character because of the dynamic between her and Jack.

Miko in isolation isn’t an annoying character. She’s reckless, and unwise, and has to be bailed out of trouble every five seconds, but this isn’t really an issue for any of the bots because as far as they’re concerned, this is Normal Human Behaviour™. They are constantly having to work with and around humans or bail them out of trouble.

Bulkhead adores Miko. He is exasperated by her like a parent is of their toddler, sure, but I wouldn’t say he is annoyed by her in any way. Her interaction with wheeljack is another example. When she exists with the bots by herself, she doesn’t come across as burdensome. She’s just limited, as every human is, by the curse of being small.

It’s only through her interactions with Jack, and his continuous challenging and calling out on her behaviour, that Miko becomes an annoying character. Frankly, it’s the tension between them which annoys the audience. We can only watch the same cyclical bickering between children before it gets old.

I have noticed that there actually are a lot of people who do like Miko, and find Jack super annoying instead. It seems like people pick one or the other depending on how you interpret which one is causing the tension. When I watched tfp as a kid, I loved Miko and hated Jack. Like, hated hated him. Because I saw Miko as a fun punk rock kid and Jack as the one needlessly calling her out. Upon rewatching tfp as an adult (who works with kids a lot) I related far more to Jack, and so the situation flipped; I saw Miko’s actions as more frustrating to watch.

The writers did eventually try to fix this, with the one heart-to-heart scene between Miko and Jack. But it was kind of rushed, and didn’t leave any lasting change to their dynamic. They went right back to arguing.

Tldr: Miko and Jack are annoying together. Fans usually pick one of em as the cause to be annoyed at but honestly, they are both fine on their own. Children bickering is annoying even in a fictional cartoon lmao

Growing up with L hcs

Hello!

For my first head canon post this has been something I’ve been wanting to write for a little while, which is my interpretation of growing up with L as his first and only friend.

CW: Some minor swearing but besides there’s nothing else as these take place when L and you are children

Anyways! Onto the post

When you met L, no one really expected you to get along with the seemingly strange boy. So when it seemed that he didn’t mind your presence, it was a pleasant surprise for Watari and your guardians (if you have guardians)

It also surprised L himself a lot as he never thought that someone would even want to be friends with him and even if they did his trust issues made it feel impossible for him to want to get close to others. It’s something that still confuses him a little to this day to be honest.

You are the one to initiate the friendship as L has never had one and simply doesn’t know how they work, it wasn’t something he looked for and expected to ever have until he met you

You’ll have a lot to work through, because as mentioned before, that poor boy has major trust issues and even though you got past his initial walls, it won’t be easy to get closer. It’ll definitely take some time!

One thing to expect a lot when it comes to becoming friends or being friends with L, is to expect him to just watch you. Like a lot. Not in creepy way or anything (at least not on purpose), simply because he’s just observant and curious to how you do things. So most of the time he’ll just be quiet and watch you as if studying you in a way

“Are you okay..?” you’d ask after a couple moments of you taking notice of his usual gaze on you

“.. Yes? Why do you ask?”

“I swear you’ve barely blinked in the last minute or so”

After hearing that he ended up looking away for a minute and blinking a bit more than usual, as if self conscious in a way. After a couple minutes though he would go right back to looking at you as if you’ve never never said anything to begin with.

When you decide to play chess with him, expect him to win almost all the time

You probably didn’t know much about chess when you met him so he ends up teaching you, but even with his teaching it won’t help.

Apart of you would wonder if he was cheating or teaching you the wrong things, but even if you practiced and tried to learn chess in your free time, he just almost always managed to win

I say almost because one day you did manage to win, taking both yourself and him off guard. You don’t even know how you managed the win but you felt SO proud of yourself.

L was quiet, his face unreadable like usual but was that a glimpse of shock on his face ever so briefly? It vanished before you could even question it much as he ends up actually congratulating you for the win, especially if he saw how happy it made you

“Hm.. Well good job.”

“It seems you aren’t always terrible at chess, hopefully you keep up this winning streak next time we play”

He could honestly be such a little shit at times

Yet you still managed to smile with your head high and say that your streak won’t be ending anytime soon and soon you’ll be the ‘chess champion’

You didn’t win the next time or the times after that

You still hold that one win high though! Even if you sometimes wonder if he let you win in the first place

Besides chess you would always try to find fun things to do or play with L, like board and card games or some games like hide n seek (even if it was just the two of you) and tag.

He isn’t a big fan of tag though, but if you both had nothing else to do and if you persisted enough he would go through with it

It always excited you when you told L about a game he didn’t know of so that you’d have to teach him about it

One of the early things you took notice of in his behavior was his interest in sweet food. You’ve never seen someone who ate so much of it and not even bat an eye

Once you are close to L, you will also quickly realize how many sweets you’ll eat when with him

He was never the type to share with the other kids at Wammy House as he didn’t see the need to and wasn’t particularly a fan of the other kids

With you though, you could be studying or talking about something and he’ll just take whatever he’s eating and offer you some. That has happened multiple times

You remember how you were working in silence and when you glanced up from focusing you saw a piece of candy next to what you were working on

Or when you were talking to him as he had a small bowl of strawberries, and every so often he’d offer you a couple of them throughout the conversation silently and nonchalantly

It was definitely something you felt was a great honor and you still do to an extent

You just won’t have to worry about being hungry when you’re around L

Reading with L also seems like something that would happen

At first it was just you two reading your own respected books as you sat near each other

As time goes on though either you or him will end up peering over each other’s shoulders and sitting close to see what the other is reading

It then shifts to you reading to L, and if he is up for it he’ll read to you in return

I feel like when you two get closer and have more conversations, it’ll go from him mostly listening to you and soon enough I see you both having some really good talks! Like it’s something you probably won’t find yourself being bored with when you’re with him

You two probably end up walking around together a lot, whether in whammy house or outside the building

Even if you bot hare quiet in each other’s company, it’s never uncomfortable and can still be really enjoyable

Like briefly mentioned before with you initiating things in the friendship, if you are the affectionate type you are definitely going to be the one to hug him first

When you hug him for the first time, It was something he just wasn’t expecting

Besides Watari, you’re the first person who has had the chance to get that close to him so it definitely took him off guard and confused him to why you’d even want to do such a thing with him

So the first time you hug him or do anything like that he had no idea what to do

He just tense and froze up as his eyes widened as he looked at you, but he probably didn’t say or do anything to make you stop. He just let you hug him quietly and after most likely tried to focus on something else

As time goes on though he’ll find himself becoming less jumpy and stop tensing up as much. He never would say much about how he felt, but deep down there was/is a part of him that appreciated and enjoys the affectionate moments

As time goes on and the closer you get, he definitely finds himself enjoying it a bit more and he’d even hug back once he was used to it a bit more and comfortable.

As you both get comfortable with one another, he’s definitely going to show his more sarcastic side and his dry humor

Just hearing him laugh and seeing him smile makes you really happy, and the closer you are the more he feels like he can open up and show that side of himself to

You probably get in some arguments or disagreements from time to time as kids/teens usually do, but you’ll both end up talking to each other again once things are calmer.

He’s also the type to just start stuff, whether it’s because he’s in a bad mood or simply wants to see your reaction as if to ‘test’ you and see if you’d stick around afterwards. He’ll find himself apologizing afterwards, maybe not at first in the beginning of the friendship but if he knows he made you upset in some way, he’ll definitely try to make up for it

You both just built up a really good communication with one another in general

You’ll just find yourself seeing a side to L that others wouldn’t expect for him to do

So you’ll learn things that others wouldn’t know like his identity, but because you grew up together you in general just know a lot about him and it’s just something you knew that you’d have to take to your grave as the last thing you’d ever want is to betray him after he opened up that side of himself to you in the first place

It started out as an unlikely friendship but even through the rocky parts, it has become so much more. A bond that won’t be broken easily to say the least

Webtoons are good for the soul [Long post] [but worth it] [hopefully]

I haven’t read that many that’s a lie but here are my favs!

Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe [ongoing - every Sunday]

or when Hades met Persephone. It’s a love story, fluffy yet deep and sad at times. Very well told and with incredible art (as you can see from the cover ci-dessus), in a pastel/watercolour fluid style, as is the storytelling. It has compelling characters, character growth, love, funny moments, and basically the best you could ask from a romantic story. And it had enough material to get you through good number of hours of reading before you have to break down every sunday in wait of the following week like the rest of us.

Love Advice From the Great Duke of Hell by unfins [ongoing - every Friday]

Paul is in love with a cute girl who works in a café nearby. But Paul is shy and can’t work out how to go ask her out. So Paul does what anyone would do and summons one of the Great Dukes of Hell in order to get better at fumbling his sentences and blushing at beautiful maidens. It’s about discovery of one’s true self and how getting deep into shenanigans will lead you to find so much more. Also, sister. (You’ll understand when you get there.)

It’s funny but also compelling and serious but still incredibly funny. I don’t think I’ve laughed as much reading any other webtoon and yet the story is also really cool. It strikes a perfect balance, or near perfect. The expressions and the action scenes are just incredible too.

Suitor Armor by Purpah [ongoing - every Friday]

In a land with magic and war between humans and fairies, Lucia is the princess’s lady in waiting and her only goal in life at the moment is to get her Lady to have the wedding she wishes for and deserves. But then she gets a flower from a magic armor and everything changes. Also, she’s a fairy.

It’s well drawn, characters all seem unique, varied and personnality-driven. The art style is beautiful. It’s also deeper than what I expected, with inklings of different types and levels of drama.

Alright, I’ll say it, it feels like a ‘promising new Lore Olympus’. By which I mean not to compare but simply to say I felt as taken by the story as I did with L.O.

Facing the Sun by ArtbyTesslyn [ongoing]

Aarya reaserches the intricacies of dobotics and artificial intelligence with her companion robot Liza who's expiration is long everdue. Things change with a hardware update. One can’t live without the other, and neither can the other.

It’s dark but beautiful, both in the art and in the story. The sci-fi elements aren’t overwhelming and pieces of lore bring begin to pain a picture over time. It’s a slow burn but oh lord! if it isn’t going to be blazing hot...

Spellbound by Ronce [ongoing]

Eglantine joins a new highschool midyear and finds herself paired with a refractarian roommate. She does her best to fit in to her new school despite not conforming to all the expectations that others might have of her. Or of her strange but likeable roommate.

It’s a cute and queer little romance, very underrated in my opinion. The art is wonderful, it’s black and white in the beginning and starts having touches of colour here and there before going full blown coloured, and I didn’t even realize it had until many chapters into it... The characters all all diverse and interesting. Also did I forget to say it’s set in France and it’s a wizarding school? Because it is!

180 Angel by King Katbird [ongoing]

Chloe is an angel, she lives in Heaven and goes to school in the hopes of becoming a delivery angel one day! However her plan are compromised by her inability to do anything well except halo manipulation. Even flying is not easy for her. But a fateful meeting with a reaper sends her on a trip to Hell and back which changes her. Or is it that she had always been different?

It may not seem much from the banner but I tried it and I got hooke. The art is great and still improves over time, the plot takes a bit of time to set in - I’m still not sure it’s fully set in yet - but it’s worth it, and the characters are visually deep. It sometimes jumps weirdly between scenes or sequences but not so much it completely loses you.

Letters on the Wall by JaelynGs [ongoing]

Tara comes back fom spain after a five years abroad to find things have changed and others haven’t, to her equal pleasure and dismay. This is how she and her friends deal with these old relatioships that they are now reviving.

Everything doesn’t go smoothly despite each and every character deserving them to. The art is good to begin with and manages to improve over time, as well as the storytelling. Where it might have been a bit hectic before, it smoothes over time. It was for the longest time the only reason I would stalk Webtoons everyday to see if there was any updates. Also each chapter has a colour in the name and that’s just cool!

If Da Yomanville Gang [see below] got me to come to Webtoons, this sealed the deal for me to stay. [And then there was Lore Olympus.]/10

Not So Shoujo Love Story by Curryuku [ongoing - every Tuesday]

Rei Chan-chan loves Hansum, the chin chin chinny goodest looking student, more than she loves her shoujo manga. But gorgeous Hannah is in her way and won’t seem to let her get her way with him. Why is that? Well, gaybe there’s a secret hidden behind her motives? Read it to find out...

It’s funny, it’s cute, and it’s so, so stupid. I love them all. It’s dumb but so much fun to read. There aren’t that many chapters yet but enough to get into it. Also, sisters. (You’ll understand when you get there. Bis) So this is what the spring of youth feels like, huh...

Always Human by walkingnorth [completed]

Sunati, a young engineer in training, fan of all those mods you can add to change your appearance, meets Austen, a beautiful yet modless girl who she’s been admiring from afar for a while now. She thinks the girl’s beautiful, but sdly she’s refused when she asks her out on a date, and for rather good reasons.

Now watch as they gravitate around each other and how it influences them both.

It’s a slow-burn quite realistic lesbian sci-fi story about finding love and accepting oneself and others in the midst of life and all it brings upon us. It’s cute, it’s fluffy, and it’s heartwarming despite broaching serious subjects - in a good way -, and it’s finished so you can read the whole thing! (It has enough chapters to give you a few hours of reading)

Da Yomanville Gang by Jason King [ongoing - every Tuesday]

Layla moved recently, to get away from a dose of angst she didn’t want to have to deal with. She meets new people, fun and friendly people, but it seems the angst can’t quite seem to leave her alone. Alone is what she’s not to deal with it anymore, however.

This is the one, long before Lore Olympus, which brought bme over to Webtoons. It’s not the best drawn, not the most compelling, but the strong point and what made me love it - beyond Layla’s chara design - is the depth of most of the characters, how not all good is good and all bad is bad, and reality often lies in the middle - and how they evolve over the course of the story. Definitely worth a read.

Love Bot by Chase Keels and Miranda Mundt [ongoing - every Sunday]

In the near future - the year is (Blade Runner) 2049 - technology has advanced enough to creat pseudo-artificial intelligence and thus lovebots. Xada mods and repairs those emotionnaly intelligent robots for a living. What brings this story about is him toying with a less-than-friendly client’s bot so much so that he finds himself in quite a pickle when the bot ‘wakes up’.

It seems to be BL. Let it be BL, please! The art is very nice, the story feels dark but the pitch give way to many interesting possibilities, and, well, the characters are quite nice to look at, I’ll admit... Also, angst. I don’t always enjoy it but when I do, I do.

Not many chapters but it’s getting there.

Mage & Demon Queen by Color_LES [ongoing - every Thusday]

Malori is the best and the most promising mage student at her school. Aided by Cerik, her best friend and swordsman party member, she attempts to conquer the last floor of the demon tower, reigned over by the ferocious Velverosa, the demon queen, whose defeat will bring glory and richess to those who defeat her. But all is not quite as it seems and, what is that, might it be a crush I see over there? Oh, wait, no, that’s just our protagonist getting squished by the weight of her love...

Once again, it’s fun and stupid (a pattern? noooo) but it’s worth a read.

Down to Earth by Pookie Senpai [ongoing - every Tuesday]

Kade live alone and depressed in spite of fleeting relatioships since his big breakup, content with simply going by life while he works in retail. One day, an alien crashes into his backyard. Zaida’s an alien but she’s cute, seems innocent, is unfamiliar with everything, so he agrees to help. Thus begins a slice of life story of them roommating in his appartment until, maybe, one of them crashes into the other’s heart?

It’s cute, heartwarming, and I sort f relate with the main character. Although I don’t know if’d prefer a cute alien, a dragon or a stalking neighbour... [that’s an inside joke, I’ll explain if I ever make a list of the good yamete onii-chan! I’ve been reading] It’s a slow burn with enough depth to hook you up. Some characters are still uncertain in my eyes but that makes me curious.

The Remarried Empress by Alphatart / Sumpul [ongoing - every Wednesday and Sunday]

Navier Ellie Trovi is an empress. Perfect and perfectly content in every way with her life until the day a mistress enters her husband’s life. Things sort of go downhill from there. Or do they? For she also learns about herself and what she might actually want out of life to be happy. Breaking the status quo might be the way.

It feels like one of those poor quality isekai comics or manga in which the MC is brought back to a time where she has the power to change her life and decides for emancipation and revenge, but it’s not. It’s more ‘yolo’ and had interesting characters, especially the MC - no pushover - and a slow-burn plot. Don’t expect to see the flash-forward in the first chapter quite yet, but come to experience the whole affaire in detail and in the most satisfying of ways! Also the art is cool!

Muted by Miranda Mundt [ongoing - every Friday]

On her 21st birthday, Camille fails the ritual to become a full-fledged witch and is isolated from what remains of her old and successful family. This leads to her discovering truths about herself and her powers that will change her and those around her.

By the same author as Love Bot. I haven’t read the whole thing yet but the designs are good, the plot is interesting, the characters have depth and personnality, it has witches, magic, romance [I guess, still unsure of the details though], a bit of angst, and it’s set in Louisianna. All good points.

Cursed Princess Club by LambCat [ongoing - every Monday]

Gwendolyn and her sisters, each a princess in their own right, are set to be betrothed to three princes of a neighbouring country after living all their lives happy and sheltered with their father and brother. Unfortunately, Gwendolyn is not like her sisters - and brother, for that matter - in that her beauty is... less than conventionnal. Devastated by what outsiders think of her she escapes into the forest and meets kindred spirits in the form of the Cursed Princess Club - non-gendered, they also have that one prince there! - and it might just help her grow into the confident woman she is destined to become.

The art is beautiful, the story seems sad yet beautiful too (I had tears reading the last chapters without knowing much of the rest) and it’s short, so jump on it!

I haven’t read this in a long time, it’s on my list though. But until the moment I stopped at least, it was fun, funny, and interesting. It’s slice-of-life comedy, often ligthearted and stupid, sometimes more serious, but globally a pleasure to read.

I very much agree with everything you have said, like I do think the bighit deal was more so with the help of say with western connections (which again does NOT mean pledis could have done this without bighit. They clearly could but I saw a theory on a YouTube comment where someone said they focused on the core fanbase aka in Korea which is their main market and it paid off imo) from helping with buisness side of things like we do have merch to buy directly (which I have my opinion on some merch ideas like why the fudge is bighit selling us water!? Bro you thought that worked with bts doesn't mean it will with seventeen) which wasn't common in the past or being able to film concerts with ease during the pandemic. Bighit clearly acknowledges that seventeen is a monster group in their own right I mean as you said, they break records and are 2nd behind bighits own group. They are EXTEMELY big in Japan. They are their own song makers, bang pd confirmed this when pleids was first announced in a press video so the fact people brush all of their achievements and statements because why, their streaming numbers are low?

And oohh such an interesting point as well! Very much i think the current mindset of kpop fans (or at least some) is that streaming is what equals success which to some degree, yes but as you said, many ignore the casual side of listening. People that find the song due to it being viral for whatever reason, a fancam getting popular like in the cass of hani from exid or whatever reason. Dwc is a great example and I saw those comments under their recent performance of that song and it makes me proud that the boys have a song like that. That it has its own "fanbase" quote on quote with how well loved that song simply is and well known. You don't have to have fans doing crazy streaming to be considered "popular", I mean I could give more examples but I don't wanna make this too long nor cause unwanted fandrama lol. Those casual listeners are extremely important and powerful I mean brave girls is a great recent example of that I think! It very much does seem like that when looking at the views, its mainly the core fanbase which isn't bad nor should we feel bad for not having crazy numbers. They seem more organic if that makes sense? Plus I agree, we can stream and can explain how it works, clearing up confusion about it like no emojis don't take down views and yes youtube does take away views but that is due to it making sure it isn't bots only viewing the video. Explaining that streaming should be done with a chill mindset and its ok if you don't stream. But hey, maybe we're too weird of fans to think like this fjajdjajs.

But some few updates! Seventeen is back on Instagram, fully everyone is posting away. Makes me happy hehe m, a bit funny it took so long for them to comeback but am happy nonetheless. The interactions that seungkwan does makes me super soft. Seventeen are also back with doing proper promotions so yay (also pledis is S Wording people over the mingyu issue finally so bless). As for me on the personal side of things. I have OFFICIALLY finished that video game ^_^ it took me a while but I have finished it, my last goodbye was completed and am at ease so to speak? and yeah that's absolutely true, pledis focused on kr promotions/fanbase first and foremost (and then expanded to Japan and is now looking toward the US/western promos in general). which i agree was a good thing. i think some companies get too greedy with wanting a group to be ~internationally famous~ that they ignore their Korean fanbase a bit too much and I've seen groups that have failed bc of it, so I'm glad that didn't happen w SVT

and yeah in terms of merch I'm genuinely grateful as an american that for this cb at least there was a US distributor which made things super convenient but wtf is going on w hybes merch those water bottles are not it TT it just sucks to see bc it's clear that at least as far as merch goes hybe doesn't have an interest in like. doing market research to figure out what carats want. which is funny bc they don't even have to start from scratch they could literally just ask pledis?? and tbh what's sad is i don't think hybe is like. purposefully trying to sabotage SVTs merch from my limited perspective i get the feeling they treat all their groups merch like that :( but since us carats have seen in the past what kind of merch we're capable of getting it's disappointing to see such a downgrade. and like tbf pledis's merch decisions were never perfect like that time they tried to sell replicas of the SVT rings and carats were rightfully pissed bc those are something the members earned, not something to be bought. and i also don't think hybe never has or never will make good merch, I'm sure they're fully capable of it. but it just seems obvious that they've put WAY less if any effort into understanding both the market (ie carats) and seventeens brand compared to pledis so like of course most carats aren't gonna like it :/ i really hope they step up their game and do better research or bring ppl onto the team who better understand svt's brand

and yeah i very much agree with everything u said about streaming! tbh i think this mindset isn't as uncommon as you might think, I've actually met a fair number of kpop fans who are critical of streaming culture but as u know there also are a lot of ppl who are really into it and those ppl tend to have the loudest voices. and unfortunately part of streaming culture is that if you question the methods or don't participate you must be a bad fan or secretly an anti or something ridiculous like that. so ppl who aren't into streaming culture end up learning to not be too vocal about it bc of how bad the backlash can be

as always I'm answering this a bit late so you may have seen already but i did get the physical album! it was a birthday gift so i only got it the other day, but according to my mom it arrived almost immediately after the album was released so as i said before, I'm very grateful for the US shop this time around ;-; as for the songs usually it's easy for me to pick one or two favorites but this time around it's genuinely a 4-way tie between heavens cloud and all the unit songs TT (i also love anyone and RTL, they're just slightly lower on the list in terms of preference if u get what i mean). i really hope some time in the future we get some kind of performance or special video or something for heavens cloud, since so many carats and the members themselves seem to really love it. i also think it's a song that brings up such beautiful imagery that it would be a shame if it never got any type of visual representation, you know? I'm also really curious to see a performance of wave, since iirc the members said the choreo is a lot more laid back/different from other perf unit choreos?? + that song also evokes such great imagery for me that like... makes feel like it needs some kind of movement so I'm just itching to see a performance. kind of like... even if i didn't know it was a perf unit song i would think it would be great to choreograph to if that makes any sense dhfkf. but yeah overall i think it's just a really solid album, as expected from summerteen ^^

I’m afab (go by she/they pronouns) I’m bi, even though I lean towards women but if I find anyone doesn’t matter gender, I really vibe with I’ll probably feel like I’m in love with them until forever ends because I catch feelings harddd. I’m not a sexual person by nature but I’ll try things if I get curious enough.

I’m black, 5’9, curvy but on the top heavy side, and more leg than torso, I wear glasses and a lot of oversized denim jackets and I’m really proud/protective of my hair. I put a lot of time and effort into making it look good! Currently, I’ve got a cute pink fluffy afro that is long enough to touch my shoulders.

I love animals but my favorite ones are cats of any kind. I collect anything cat like it’s diamonds, and get along pretty well with them too. I even wear cat ears with almost every outfit and a cat shaped pin with bi colors :3 I like my space but also won’t mind being picked up and cuddled if I’m in the mood.

I like to read and write fiction, fantasy being the best genre to me. I like to draw as well, but not as much as writing. If I feel comfortable enough I’ll share what I make with my s/o, and if they like it it’ll probably be the best thing that’s happened to me all day. If not… well I don’t want to make them feel bad but I’ll probably be too shy to share again anytime soon.

I like to compliment others and make them feel good about myself but have a hard time accepting compliments myself. I tend to feel neutral on my own existence but it isn’t hard to hit a depressive low. I don’t like talking about my problems that much or trauma dumping. I’ll listen well to others and only respond of they want me to, and over all only speak and initiate conversations if it seems important. I feel like actions speak louder than words and only need to actually hear “I love you” if I’m feeling insecure and it’s eating me up. I try to be flirty but get too flustered if someone flirts back, especially if it’s a good one. I honestly feel so bad for the Gaylor community because the Gaylor subreddit is such a mess. For a while it was just abandoned, which is bad enough, but then it got filled with very angsty messages... which all seem to come from the same person..?

Anon, let’s take a walk, I want to show you this neat rabbit hole I found.

I first noticed a user called Rio211, I’ve written about her on my blog before. She joined reddit on October, 2019, is mostly active in the GaylorSwift subreddit, as well as the r/popheads, the r/TaylorSwift (where she was obviously shadowbanned) and some random other subreddits. It’s on these last ones I learned that she identifies as a bisexual woman and says she’s 25 and from Brazil. She absolutely despises Taylor - here’s just one of her many comments.

She also:

blames bots for there being so many people talking (and supporting) Taylor’s relationship with Joe (who she calls Fugly Joe and “a merkin”)

thinks that Tree is in charge of both Taylor’s subreddit and the LChat and is banning anyone who talks about Taylor being a lesbian.

She mentions a couple of times how Harry Styles doesn’t like Taylor at all

Doesn’t believe someone can be Non-binary. Is very transphobic in general.

Uses slurs like ‘retard’ and ‘slow’ very casually

Uses age as a way to dismiss you, like the “only if you’re 14, I’m 25 and all I see...”. Or says that Taylor is 30 but is still acting like a 14 year old.

Complains about not being able to question the pandemic because she’d be banned.

Taylor gives her “depression vibes”, she theorises that Taylor was abused - oh! and also that she looks “swollen”.

she insults Taylor for being a closeted lesbian by making comments like: “I [Taylor] am a bitter closet case who wanted to go to St. Tropez with bitches and models but can’t because I’m a closet.”

I’m posting a screenshot so you can get a general idea of the kind of comments she made (we can’t see the complete thing because, as I said, she has been shadowbanned from r/TaylorSwift so her comments won’t show on the thread)

She hasn’t posted anything for 110 days.

Then there’s PrettyAliens who joined reddit in August 2019.

Mostly active on r/TaylorSwift (she has also been shadowbanned, although she doesn’t seem to notice it?)and r/GaylorSwift. Says she’s a bisexual woman from Brazil and/or Argentina (she switches around) and 23 years old.

Calls Joe: a merkin, a leech and “fugly flop”.

She makes jokes about Taylor like “[Taylor] will be wearing a costume, dressed like a closet”.

Calls fans “slow” for admiring Taylor in any way, and calls Taylor similar names (including retard) more than once.

Says a bunch of times that Harry Styles can’t stand Taylor.

Downplays the pandemic by saying only weirdos are still isolating.

Ask people how old they are to imply they’re being naive or simply stupid. And has several times stated that Taylor is “an old child” and shit like that.

She says there’s no such thing as Cis-men or cis-women. Only men and women. And non-binary doesn’t exist. Very transphobic in general.

She goes on an on about Taylor looking bloated and sad. Probably being an alcoholic too.

She believes that... you guessed it: Bots are behind the Joe’s popularity with the swifties and that Tree controls Taylor’s subreddit&LChat.

Examples of her comments

Lastly there’s popparts who joined in August, 2020. Active pretty much only on r/GaylorSwift and r/TaylorSwift (shadowbanned, yes).

Calls Joe a “leach” and “grumpy flop” among other things and accuses people of being “bot trolls” whenever someone doesn’t hate his existence:

“Only a retard 12yo uses the line ‘you need to calm down’”

Downplays the pandemic saying that they can go everywhere and everybody does.

Asks people how old they are to imply they’re being naive or simply stupid. Or use “12” as the go-to “stupid age”.

Insists Harry Styles doesn’t like Taylor.

Keeps pointing out that Taylor looks sad and depressed.

Phrases like ‘closet case’

Popparts hasn’t really talked much about themselves other than they’re in college (med student, supposedly). But what I find curious is that both Popparts and PrettyAliens seem to have the same activity on Reddit. There have been times in which both of them don’t comment on anything for a few days and then they return at the same time. Although that can be explained by saying that sometimes there’s nothing to talk about.

Needless to say, these 3 people all believe Karlie and Taylor were in a relationship for a while but they have broken up. Karlie wanted the money and the fame. Taylor wanted Karlie back but couldn’t get her, and now she’s sad. However, these 3 Redditors do not pity Taylor, because they all think she’s earning a lot of her money by appearing heterosexual while baiting the gays. And they resent her for that. A lot.

In conclusion: these 3 users (who sometimes interact with each other) are the same person and you won’t convince me otherwise. Even if 3 different people approach me to claim their own account I’d tell them that they’re all sharing the same brain cells and that’s even worse. And maybe this goes deeper and there are more replicas but I have already spent an embarrassingly large amount of time finding just these 3.

Connor deviating because cyberlife included an experimental feature in his coding that makes him ticklish and Hank or Gavin finds out, thinks it's hilarious and adorable, and tries it out. He is Very Displeased And Embarrassed.

One of the blessings about being a prototype was that should there be features to their models, most of the time they are hidden. Connor was blessed with the knowledge his could only be found out by trial and error or if you had his manual, a second blessing considering Hank didn’t bother reading it, just finding out as he went along or asked directly. It saved face and kept things relatively calm.

Hank occasionally figured things out on his own, when he bothered to get curious about it, and so did others sometimes. Like how wireless connections worked with Androids, when you could just kinda tell when they did it. The fact humans could figure that out had actually spooked a number of androids and impressed the hell out of Connor himself.

All in all, learning things about Connor didn't bother him a bit, sometimes even he was surprised by what was in there seeing as he wasn’t really given the chance to check it. Well, until his manual went missing.

“Con? Do you know where that damn tablet of your’s went?” Despite the lack of reading, Hank had kept it just in case. And because it was Connor’s. “Had it in the drawer but it’s like it up-ed and walked off...”

Personal effects going missing in the DPD wasn’t a normal event, causing his led to spin a bit of yellow. “Lieutenant, inanimate objects don’t walk off.” He supposed he must have been too literal considering Hank’s groan. “Perhaps it was borrowed by mistake? Thinking it was a work tablet?”

A quick scan of the office found it on officer Miller’s desk who was no where to be seen, so Connor made a note to ask about it later as he went to retrieve it. The last thing anyone needed was someone snooping in his manual.

It was a mishap that was long forgotten after a week, both of them too busy to care. Busy until Hank got sick with a stomach bug and had to stay home, leaving Connor to be stuck with whoever was available. Sadly today it had been Gavin.

Connor couldn’t help but keep an eye on him, the overly ‘pleased with himself’ grin and mostly pleasant attitude setting off red flags for the RK. He still did his work, tried to not let on what he thought of this as he gave the man a coffee, as he always did with Hank.

“Well hell, tincan, thanks.” Despite Gavin giving thanks he seemed to smug about it and it was baffling.

“You are welcome? Detective, are you alright? You are acting strange...” Damn his curiosity.

It was the first time that day the man leered at him, if only halfheartedly. “What? Want me to throw it at your or something? That what gets your motor running?” Of course, he couldn’t keep himself from laughing at that. But before Connor could reply the human was up with his cup and heading out the door. “Come on, got work to do.”

The RK took the out, trailing after him like the good bot he is. Whatever the man had going on, Connor hoped it would last until Hank was back.

Thankfully they were just out for questioning at the moment, so it wasn’t really a rush and the task was finished fast enough that Gavin took a detour to get food. Connor could only be thankful Reed was better about his diet than Hank, not by a great margin but it didn’t make him wanna hide the humans lunch.

While the Android waited he took time to look though statements and evidence remotely, mostly ignoring Gavin even existed. Turns out this was never a good move with the man. Not ten minuets later he felt a sharp feeling he couldn’t explain, perhaps like static, run up his side that caused him to let out the most silly snort.

A noise soon followed by laughing. “Holy shit! You really ARE ticklish! Guess that manual was right. Wild ass phucks at cyberlife...”

Connor could only look at him like he had a second head, but any move to protest was followed by Gavin quickly poking him again, the feeling causing the RK to jerk in his seat. His led went red as he saw the grin on the man’s face, and even Connor couldn’t predict the human that apparently hated him would jump across his own seat to tackle him.

Where Connor expected a actually fight, he found himself letting out confused, staticy noises as human danced his fingers along the android’s sides causing him to squirm and jerk from his touch. And though the haze of touch and sparks the RK came to the realization that yes, Gavin was right, and he was ticklish and WHY ON EARTH WOULD THEY MAKE HIM LIKE THAT?

He was as indigent as he could be with his systems going nuts. Why on earth would this be a reasonable addition to his programming?! What, did the Programmer have a kink or something? Connor didn’t wanna know the answer to that. Right now the overwhelming sparks and embarrassment from it all had his programming frizzing out until it finally failed, a event marked by the sudden change in noises from static to actual full on laughs.

Gavin kept at him a bit longer, the deviation taking only a matter of seconds in his eyes, before he finally stopped messing with the poor android as he breathed a bit harder from his own laughter.

Connor wasn’t in any better state, hair all a mess as well as his clothes as his internal fans kicked on to cool him off in the form of panting. This, perhaps, was quite a suggestive scene with how after a few seconds the man jumped off him with a red face.

“So.. You were the one that grabbed my manual?”

Gavin wouldn’t look at him but shrugged. “Thought it was Hank’s, needed files and what not.”

Such a little thing had made the man so happy and pleasant to be around, and for the first time they’ve had a nice encounter. “... I think we should look more into what else is hidden in my programming.” This could be fun. As long as it isn’t tickling.

Kermit and Friends: Fun

Kermit and Friends had a jam packed line-up this week featuring a children’s musician, a life coach, and an actor/filmmaker who often collaborates with Reverend Andy Dick. Let’s talk about it.

Elisa opened the show with a beautiful little monologue explaining how she’s only doing things in the spirit of her beloved precious dog, Kermit. After introducing her co-host Sugar, Elisa brought on her financial adviser Kevin Cao for advice on all the stock market hoopla from this past week. Unfortunately Kevin didn’t have much to offer in terms of stock suggestions, but I’m sure next week he’ll have plenty of hot information to share with Elisa.

Barry Boss called in for the first time in about a month to update us that he’s being released from the mental hospital very soon and that he will be joining Kermit and Friends live in the near future. Yay!!!

After hanging up on Barry, Elisa pulled up the Larry King of our beautiful Kermit and Friends World, Trumpster Bob, who had these three fascinating questions to ask Elisa...

What are you looking for in your next partner?

Are you flat-footed?

Do your boobs remain stiff or bounce around a lot when you’re riding a guy?

After eloquently answering Bob’s questions, Elisa was ready to bring on her first guest of the day, Snooknuk!

Elisa would accidently bring on Snooknuk’s partner E-Bot first, a robot puppet. After exchanging pleasantries and Elisa realizing the mistake she made, the actual Snooknuk graced us with her lovely presence.

Snooknuk is a children’s musician who writes, produces, and creates songs/videos catered towards children. Her most popular video, You Made a Potty, has over 1.5 millions views on Youtube!

Elisa asked Snooknuk all about creating music, how she came up with her name, the relationship with her robot puppet, Snooknuk’s connection to children, etc. The interview was short and sweet but Snooknuk and her E-Bot were very much in the spirit of Kermit, and I hope they will bless the show with another appearance sooner than later. I would absolutely love to learn more about them.

The next guest was Bran Kohn, a ‘Life Coach’ with many accomplishments to his name like 2 Grammy Awards, multi-platinum records, published poems, stuntman credits, British martial arts medals, and tons of other things that would take me all day to type. Very, very impressive résumé, I must say.

Elisa mostly talked to Brad about his Life Coaching theories. Brad was kind enough to share his personal insights to the KAF audience about what it takes to be successful. He went on further to talk about the benefits of meditation, the personal relationships he develops as a life coach, how he has more women than men as clients, and the length it usually takes for his methods to work. Elisa also received some extremely sexual phone calls about Brad during her interview with him from both women and men, which seems to be the norm now whenever someone attractive attends the Kermitarian Church.

I liked Brad. Nice guy, seems sincere. He needs to work on his camera angle as Elisa suggested, but for the most part he seems like he could be a valuable member of the Kermit and Friends Universe if he decides to stick around like I hope he does.

Next up is Paris Dylan!

Paris has collaborated with Andy Dick for many years. They were once roommates and seem like the best of friends. Their newest project is none other than Tiger Dick, a parody of the hit Netflix documentary series Tiger King.

Elisa had lots of questions for Paris regarding Andy and their friendship. She dove into that and even shared a funny video of Andy and Paris cosplaying as Ariel and the Crab from The Little Mermaid.

Besides Andy talk, Elisa also asked Paris about his many other ventures, such as his punk pop band We Tried and his other work in the film industry. What separated Paris from most big guests on KAF is that he actually paid attention to the Youtube chatroom, engaging with both fans and trolls alike.

Paris sincerely gave a fun-spirited interview and seems like an awesome guy. He’s someone I can see really ingraining himself into KAF long-term. His work with Andy is terrific so it would be an absolute blast to see him bring that chemistry to Kermit and Friends on a regular basis.

Kermit also made another great friend yesterday by a gentleman named Dave Robinson. Dave is from the UK and found KAF after becoming curious about what happened to Elisa following her departure from The Howard Stern Show. Dave played two great original songs for us and seems to be very interested into becoming a recurring performer on the show. So a big shout out to Dave, who brilliantly summed up Kermit and Friends as an adult version of Sesame Street that’s looking to bring happiness and laughter to the World. That’s exactly what KAF is.

Laurie has officially become the chef of Kermit and Friends. Elisa debuted Laurie’s latest cooking video where she taught everyone how to properly prepare a nice Honey Mustard Chicken dinner. You can follow Laurie’s new Youtube channel Kermitarian Cooking by clicking here. Good job, Laurie!

Fun was a fantastic episode from start to finish, filled with great guests and colorful bits that made everyone laugh and enjoy themselves. If you have yet to watch it, I highly recommend that you do so asap.

bzzzt……….. bzzzt……….. bzzzt……….. Gavin groaned but forced himself to ignore the blinking LED of his phone. Some asshole had texted him many times and now even had the audacity to call him. Yes, he knew he was late for work. No, he wouldn’t hurry. He didn’t phcking care and neither did anyone in the precinct. On the contrary. The more time he was gone the less he had the chance to cause trouble. Fowler didn’t give him shit for it as long as he solved his cases and showed up for his minimum working-hours. But it must be someone from work, because except for the pizza delivery no one knew his damned phone number. Tina? She wouldn’t call him. She hated talking on the phone as much as he did. Well, Connor had pulled the stunt once and earned a fist to the mechanical gut for it. After that he had learned his lesson. Gavin was just as pissed off as he was curious. As there was another call and his phone was in danger of vibrating its way off the nightstand, the Detective rolled over and grabbed it. He looked at the display.

RK900 #313 248 317 -87 is calling…

Gavin frowned. Where the hell had his useless plastic partner gotten his number from? And why would the asshole call him? He waited until the other side ended the call and decided to look at his messages.

8:21 >Detective, you are late. 9:34 >Normally I wouldn’t inquire your presence at the precinct, but it is needed. 9:34 >There had been another murder. We are to go to the crime-scene. 9:40 >Detective, I heard from Connor that you don’t like phone calls and I want to apologize in advance. 9:41 >Detective, we will be late. Pick up your phone. 9:45 >Finally, you are reading my messages. Please come to the precinct as soon as possible.

‘Like hell I am’, Gavin muttered to himself and texted: Go there yourself, you phcking toaster. The answer came near instantly.

9:46 >I can’t. I’m not allowed to enter a crime-scene without my handler. Unfortunately, that is you.

I’m not coming to work today. Do what you want, I don’t care. Gavin was already tired from speaking to the machine and he wasn’t even physically there.

9:47 >If that’s so, I will inform the Captain about the possibly lost evidence due to your laziness.

‘Laziness?!’, Gavin shouted into the empty apartment. He felt tempted to throw his phone against the next wall.

Listen here you phcking bot, you should think about what you say, else I report to Fowler you are malfunctioning or threatened me. Who do you think they will believe? A normal human or a phcking emotionless killer-robot?

9:53 >I’m sorry if I offended you, Detective. I thought this tactic would let you act out of spite. Humans tend to do that. 9:55 >You are the most ambitious person I know, I thought you wouldn’t take it that serious. Please come to the crime scene. I promise you, I only want to investigate the scene, you don’t have to be near me the rest of the day, if that makes you uncomfortable.

Phcking fine, I’ll come tin-can.

In the end Gavin did hurry. Best to get it over with as fast as possible. He had always loved his job. Well, it was the only thing he got in life, really. Phcking family left him and he left his home to move to Detroit, get as far away as possible from his past. He didn’t find friends except for Tina, but he couldn't manage to regret his decision. He was always caught up in his work, he even took it home with him and soon became one of the best Detectives in Detroit. As he said, he had always loved his job. Until he was partnered up with that phcking tin-can.

Emotionless, logic-driven, walking chemistry lab with super sensors. The thing didn’t even have a name! Gavin cursed under his breath as he hit just another red light. He was tempted to pin the siren to his roof and crash through traffic, but well, there wasn’t really any urgency to justify its use.

Around twenty minutes later he arrived, his plastic partner already standing right before the holographic police tape, the white Cyberlife jacket a beacon for trouble. Phcking hell, Gavin saw red whenever the idiotic robot was in sight. He parked the car and hurried over, walking straight past the android that had opened his mouth to greet him. Obviously taken aback RK900 turned and fell into a short run to keep up with him. As he caught up, Gavin had already begun talking to the officer on sight.

LED a frustrated red RK900 listened to what he had been about to tell the Detective himself. He had collected additional data from just standing there on the sidewalk already and both of them could have worked more efficient. Something he knew the Detective liked. He had thoroughly researched Reed before being partnered up with him and had been relieved to see the man was annoyed by the same thing he was: unnecessary ineffectiveness in solving a case. He had easily pissed off every other partner before because they were slowing him down. He often bent the laws to get some information even faster, although that could get him in trouble quite easily.

RK900 had thought to get along with the Detective being a superior model and giving his human partner the exclusive access to information right away instead of having to wait for lab results and database research. But somehow, he had been wrong. The human ignored him at best and was openly aggressive at worst. He had come late repeatedly, sometimes didn’t come at all or did most of the work at home. RK900 had considered the Detective’s file manipulated until he asked Connor and learned that Gavin’s behaviour had changed only as he arrived.

Sometimes RK900 contemplated asking for a transfer. His main goal was keeping Detroit safe. If he worked somewhere away from the men both of their efficiencies would maximise. But somehow it felt like giving up. He wanted to solve his very own case: Get to the bottom of why the Detective seemed to hate him when he was exactly what the man always wished for in his working career.

Well, it would be another frustrating day, as he observed the Detective storming to the house where the victim was murdered. At least he would be able to get the clues he wanted as he could roam freely. He deliberately let the Detective choose where he wanted to look first and then go into a different room. He had learned the human was more cooperative if allowed his own pace.

It took hours where it should have been half that time, them carefully evading each other instead of helping. RK900 had seen enough and walked outside, waiting for his partner. Maybe he could convince the man to at least share his conclusions.

Not much later he walked out of the house, trying to hurry past him again. But RK900 stepped in his way. ‘What?’ The android reminded himself to be careful not to anger the Detective anymore. ‘I just thought we could talk about it. It’s our case after all. Your experience in the field would be of great importance to my evaluation.’ ‘Phck your evaluation, I’ll go home now. I’ll send my report once I’m home.’

Gavin took a step to the side, but RK900’s patience had run out. He could always ask for a transfer if the situation escalated and there was no way he would continue working like this. He blocked the path again, his scanners warning him that the human’s condition was dangerously close to him losing it. ‘Move, android.’ It was pressed between his teeth, anger barely contained. He would explode any minute now and RK900 sighed, taking a step back to show his will to cooperate, but not enough to back down from his position. The human clenched his fists and shouldered past him. It must hurt the Detective more than the android – he was basically ramming into a doorpost.

‘Just what do you want me to say, Detective?’, he shouted after the human, alerting the whole street that shit was about to hit the fan. Gavin’s temper wasn’t easily fought down once it became unleashed, especially in public. ‘What should I say so that you will work with me? I’m not asking for much. I’m not asking for trust. I’m not asking for friendship. I’m not hoping to accompany you to your bar-nights or talk with you about the weekend. I’m just looking for a functioning work environment and you make it extremely difficult to maintain that.’ The man had stopped a few steps away from his car. Well, he hadn’t ignored him this time, but that wasn’t really a good thing. ‘I’m willing to compromise, Detective. I’m willing to endure your degrading nicknames, I’m willing to put up with your attitude. I just don’t want to be ignored. I am just as competent as you and I see my and your abilities wasted if we continue like this. I will do anything you want if it will finally end this situation.’

The human shook for a moment, then unclenched his hands and let his shoulders fall. RK900 focused only on the human. Maybe that had done the trick? The Detective had always been tense around him, on edge. This just looked… tired. ‘You will do anything?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘Then phck off RK900. I never needed a partner, I never asked for one. Just go and let me be alone.’ The human walked over to his car and unlocked the door. ‘Will be better for both of us’, he added mumbling to himself, but the android picked it up.

Gavin sat down in his car and drove off. His phone buzzed two times while he drove, but he ignored it until he was parked in the parking lot of his apartment complex.

15:12 >I’m sorry I couldn’t live up to your expectations, Detective. I decided to be your partner on my own, you know. I searched the files of every police officer in Detroit and you were the most interesting, competent and worthwhile find of mine. I don’t know what I did to turn you away, but I regret not having the chance to get to know you better. 15:13 >I will respect your wishes and ask Fowler for a transfer. 15:13 >I wish you best of luck in the future and hope you’ll find peace from whatever it is that pushes you into isolation like this. 15:14 >RK900 #313 248 317 -87

How does your Shockwave perceive his relationships with say Megatron, Soundwave and Starscream??

Omg no, but aaaaaaaaahhhhhh

All three are vastly different ones, though admittedly I feel like I may be bare bones with Megatron because how the Prime animated series handled him was very....disheartening towards what Megatron could be. It felt like a disservice to his character? But maybe I’m also giving Megatron too much credit in combination with believing they tried to wrap up too much in a short amount of time, ahah. (But also I’ve only watched Prime, animated, and Cyberverse so my source material for Megatron is a poor library as is fjaosidfz)

Read more bc this got kinda....lengthy...Sorry if this more than what you were hoping for anon!!!? ;;;;; (It may not even be what you wanted at all LOL;;;;)

With Megatron; Shockwave thought him someone to be respected at first. A scenario of “He a little confused, but he got the spirit”. And in some regard Shockwave still does respect the bot, but he “justifies” this that he saw Megatron fight a lot of battles in the pits. He patched Megatron up in a lot of positions, it would make sense for a bot to lose their sense of self or to go power hungry like Megatron seemed to do. To go from (minor?) to Gladiator to commanding your own army that’s strong enough to wage a war across Cybertron large scale is a large jump, especially for a society where caste systems were very strong and upheld. Even for someone who opposed that very caste system, you could become weak in other areas when given even a slim chance to oppose it on a large scale.

Never mind how obsessed Megatron became over Optimus Prime.

It was at that point that Shockwave knew he was only entirely with the Decepticons for his own sake. To be able to freely experiment and expand the knowledge of where things can go. He tried to observe it as a thought that Optimus was what remained of that caste system, but Megatron showed his old ways. Old ways of treating everything like a Gladiator show, had to throw in dramatics, had to impress. Which isn’t something Shockwave can relate to. Impressing others is not why he does what he does.

He perceives his relationship with Megatron as something that could have been better, but ultimately only sided with him in the end as a means to properly exercise his genius to create and explore where other bots didn’t want to under the strict ‘right vs wrong’ caste system. Megatron disbanding the Decepticons because Only At That Moment he discovered suffering feels wrong to Shockwave, like maybe there’s something more? It wasn’t logical how the dissolve of Decepticons came to be, but he was never that loyal either so he’s not hard pressed to hunt him down and find out why. (Though if given half a chance he’d love to pry deeper into the reasoning, just out of curiosity.) Ultimately it’s nothing, he’s not missing anything with Megatron’s absence. At most maybe Megatron still gave Shockwave what he wanted, as with the rebuild of Cybetron maybe the caste system won’t be so strict and he can experiment as he wants again.

With Starscream: I’m speaking with thinking of @soleresistar‘s Starscream in mind, of course. Since they’re kind of my Starlight and I only have this blog because of them! But I feel like their portrayal of Starscream is so fucking spot on I don’t think it’s canon divergent. I’ll mostly be playing off of what has already developed between the two in our threads and maybe some stuff that we have vaguely planned out for these two in the future!

Shockwave perceives his relationship with Starscream as something greater than what he had with Megatron, for sure. And as of right now they’re Partners, Starscream is definitely someone that Shockwave now has to trust despite the past three times Starscream has lied to and betrayed him. Shockwave feels like there’s more to observe of Starscream than with Megatron. And despite how eratic Starscream is on the outside Shockwave feels like there is one common thing within that makes him act like this; Which is fear. Something that Shockwave can piece together and understand, he does this or that because he’s afraid. Especially considering what has happened to Starscream in the past and all that he’s lost. Wanting to be validated also makes sense in all of this.

Having to trust Starscream so that he can survive (both of them) is something powerful, and Shockwave can even understand that. At this point it’s only logical that they would work together, but in Shockwave’s processor he definitely understands that Starscream could find one (1) thing that could cause him to decide to turn tail and leave Shockwave in his bulky, slower, and land bound self to defend for himself. Which was easy when he was the only one on Cybertron (sans the insectcons), but now there’s Autobots riding around causing a ruckus.

Their relationship is...there. And in the past Shockwave has definitely used Starscream as a basis for how to act or emote. While moving his antenna’s is natural for him, they only do so much. Wings, however, he’s discovered convey so much more. And that’s something he’s interested in! Also the very concept of the hidden Seeker language is fascinating and something he’d like to learn just to learn. (Bc Shockwave’s just a beefy nerd)

Starscream will become a bot that Shockwave ‘trusts’. Starscream is scientifically curious, and wants to find his place again that’s not living in fear if he so much as breathes in a disapproving way to Megatron. Shockwave is willing to give him this place.

Dratz and I have even discussed scenario (in deeper and longer depth) where if they did manage to find Megatron, and he decided to go back to his old ways of physically berating Starscream Shockwave would step in. Without the ranks of the Decepticons it is illogical to show your disapproval in this way, there is nothing to disapprove of. If you wish to be angry, than be angry, but take it out on a rock (or a bot more your size.) It’s just ridiculous. Though, other than finding Soundwave, Shockwave has no want or need to find this estranged warmonger really.

With Soundwave: OOOOOOOHHH, forgive any biased as WaveWave is my like....default ship for Shockwave. But I’m trying to explain this in a way that’s not totally biased and is just how I think they perceive each other. (Or Shockwave of Soundwave, anyways) And I say default ship in the sense of....Shockwave is without a doubt endeared to the other bot, and exists very comfortably with him. Where as normally Shockwave is constantly operating in a sort of rigid way of needing to figure literally everything out even about himself.

Their trust is impeccable. When Dark Mount was literally falling down around Shockwave, he calmly requested a groundbridge and just kinda waited for Soundwave to get that for him. While things were falling down around him, because he knew that Soundwave would get it for him in time. Or another time when Shockwave was still out retrieving Predacon bones himself, when Bumblebee and Smokescreen showed up and ganged up on him (and eventually Optimus too) Soundwave? Just showed up? Soundwave never leaves the Nemesis unless ordered. Another small thing would be when Cybertron was still livable and before Shockwave’s first accident Soundwave just like. Points for Starscream to go to Shockwave. Shockwave can say without a doubt he trusts one bot and that’s Soundwave.

And in all honesty I feel like I would need to headcanon deeper with someone who muses Soundwave about what exactly happened during the Gladiator days. Also on the fact they share a name. They’re not regarded as brothers or twins like others in the series, so in some way I feel like their sparks are touched by each other. Maybe not deeply, maybe not subtly at all actually! This is stuff that I think about a lot and over the top but don’t really have the other half to muse or headcanon off with. (Because like. I get Soundwave, but I don’t get Soundwave. He’s not my muse.)

I also know that I headcanon Shockwave as permanently having a comm link opened up for Soundwave at all times, so when he got sent to the Shadowzone it was a very jarring and emptying moment for him. But there was also so much going on in that moment Shockwave didn’t have much of a chance to investigate it or do anything about it. And then it just became more and more difficult to do anything about it as things started really hitting the fan.

But Shockwave perceives his relationship with Soundwave as something absolute, it’s unavoidable.

Shockwave has also picked up cues from Soundwave, similar to how he has with Starscream. At first Shockwave, too, thought that Soundwave’s oath was ludicrous and pointless. But as Shockwave is learned from a couple different walks of life, there’s a certain expression in silent languages that spoken ones really can’t get across. (Which is weird for a scientist based entirely on logic.)

Underswap Revisited

This isn't like, an official change to how I view/write underswap for asks but it's an interesting variation that I've been thinking about

Toriel: She still lives in the Ruins. But rather than leaving to escape violence, she goes there to quietly collect human souls, because she knows Asgore won't do it. As with Tale!Asgore, she isn't cruel or sadistic. She takes no pleaure in killing children and tries to do it as painlessly as possible. Her approach is usually to guide them through the Ruins, while making sure they know what's coming. I'm thinking of Asgore's "dentist" speech. She promises the child that if they come with her, she'll protect them from the more painful death the other traps in the Ruins can give them, and she'll make them a pie of their choosing as a sort of last meal. It's macabre in it's way but it's all she can think to do. She ends up forming a bond with Frisk, however. Which makes their battle that much harder. She tries to provoke them, to fight back. If they kill her, she's grateful. She thanks them. She begs them to be careful. And if they continue to spare her....in the end she lets them past. Overwhelmed by her guilt but praying that if they can make it out....maybe things can be better.

Papyrus: former pride of the Royal Guard, Stretch was on track to potentially follow in Undyne's footsteps someday. He was smart, fast, and far, far more dangerous than he looks. A few years ago, though, something.... happened. No one knows just what. But he started to look more and more tired. He showed up for work later and later. He'd always played fast and loose with regulations and always been a bit on the lazy side but lately it was like he didn't even see a point anymore. Finally he turned in his letter of resignation without much explanation. Something about no longer feeling like he could protect people. He and Undyne still hang out. Shes trying to teach him to cook, with..... extremely mixed results. The rest of his time he spends helping/harassing his brother with his terrible jokes. Still, don't mistake his apathy for weakness. If pushed into a corner, you'll find he's retained a lot of his old skills....he's the man on the phone for most of your journey. Hope you enjoy bad puns and bitching about Hotland

Sans: wannabe Royal Scientist and absolute terror of Snowdin. Since childhood Blue has always had an uncanny knack for machines. Usually machines of a somewhat....explosive variety. Combine that with his love of stars and astronomy, and it was natural for him to want to work at the Labs. Still, he's young, inexperienced, and perhaps a bit undisciplined. Alphys likes his potential but worries he may not be ready yet (not that she'd ever say it to his face). In the meantime he develops his skills via puzzle making (and pranking the residents of Snowdin). He's exuberant, a bit of a little shit, but ultimately sweet tempered and hungry for friendship. He also has a telescope in Waterfall and a lot of odd jobs to support his equipment purchases. Rather than a battle body he wears a labcoat and glasses he doesn't need.

Grillby: the owner of Blues favorite place in Snowdin and a notorious tightfist. He attacks the player if they can't pay their tab and tries to shake them down for items. Can be pacified if you bought Sans' fried snow. He loves his daughter very much and seems to enjoy Blue's hijinks, for whatever reason

Undyne: the notoriously reclusive captain of the Royal Guard. No one ever doubts her strength. When called on she can still cause a severe ruckus. However, these days she's rarely seen outside her Waterfall home, except for her rare visits to the Lab. The Player first encounters her on the phone as she stammers out some vague threats before ambushing them is magical spears. If you follow the clues from her phonecalls, you can eventually find her house, where you learn her dark secret:..

....she actually thinks human culture is super cool. And she's worried that by doing this she's let everyone in the Underground down, including Asgore, who invested so much time in her. She still loves to fight! But killing humans....in person it's too hard. In a pacifist route, the player can even opt out of combat and offer to make tea with her and reminisce.

Alphys: sure, anime is great for flower symbolism, catgirls, and princesses with swords the size of their dead fathers. But you know what else it has?

Mechas

And these giant robots are the particular specialty of the Underground royal scientists. Whether is just basic power armor, Voltron clones, or transformers, Alphys has a sexy, sexy bot for almost every occasion. Mettaton, her debut, was just a taster for her real abilities. If it's badass, mechanical, and you can attach a sexy pair of legs to it, Alphys can build it for you. However, the Royal Scientist's passions for her craft (and the destruction of humanity) masks a warm heart for her friends, and deep down she's a big ol softie.

Napstablook: sometimes fame hits when you least expect it. Napstablook is a brilliant musician who's self-produced tracks have taken the Underground by storm. However, their talent is only matched by their mystique. The ghost has just a bit of an ego, and is convinced mingling too much with others with fans will taint their artistic vision. As a result, all their songs are published under a handle (SpookedSordid, if you're curious) and they hide themselves away in the family snail farm, ever hiding from their legions of fans. Since their cousin left, they've been a bit on the lonely side, though...

Mettaton: Metta loves his cousin's music, he really does. He's also very happy that people are enjoying their work. But when you spend all your time on the outskirts of someone else's spotlight, you eventually start to worry you'll never get your own. When he found an opportunity in a young science prodigy....he took it. Disappeared one day and turned up at Mettaton, prospective new star of the Underground. Finally, his performance abilities were being appreciated! But, in time, he found that it couldn't distract from the gnawing guilt inside him. Not to mention the onset of imposter syndrome. It was by singing and dancing along to Napsta's music that he had even learned to perform in the first place. So who was he to stand here, receiving the lauds? Would people even want to be around him if they knew who his cousin was? Could Napstablook even forgive him? Was he worth all this attention? By the time the Player encounters him, he is a whole mess of insecurities, only barely hiding, and desperate for anyway out of the Underground to escape this fear. If it's not too much trouble. Is he bothering you? He's probably bothering you...

Muffet: the spider woman may look a bit on the spooky side but she's a respectable woman looking to raise money for her kin in Snowdin. Her bakery is a welcome respite, and the only thing that would ever make Stretch agree to deal with Hotland's puzzles.

Asgore: the loss of his children didn't leave him angry. It left him...scared. They were gone for mere moments before they were torn to shreds. Was the outside world really that dangerous? The coming years only reinforced this for him. Children who fall into the Underground (those who make it past his wife, that is) rarely have happy stories. Ebott really was the only safe place, wasn't it? Well....if that was true, what responsible parent would ever allow them to leave? They were safe here. No matter how much monsterkind might dream of the stars....and no matter how much the human children wanted to go home. He wasn't cruel: he let them keep their dreams. If Undyne found any humans she was under strict orders to bring them to him, ostensibly to deal with them, but really to squirrel them away in the palace until they lived out their natural lifespans. So short compared to monsters .

He would keep them safe....whether they wanted it or not. He stands as the last guardian between the barrier and the underground. And no one will be leaving.

Out of curiosity, why don’t you like Hayami?

I’m curious to know what prompted this but I guess I’ve made it a bit too obvious somehow that Hayami isn’t one of my most liked characters out of the entire VRAINS cast lol

(if you don’t want the specific reasons/examples on why I don’t like Hayami, there’s a summary at the bottom that tries to sum my feelings up properly without all the explanation attached)

But, to put it into simpler words - I really, really want to like her canon character but I can’t.

There are a variety of factors for this but, to me, it just feels like she’s a near cardboard cut-out. When she was first introduced, this was actually kind of impressive: we had this sweet girl who was clumsy, loved to leap to conclusions, had maybe stalkerish tendencies towards Akira (as well as her obsession towards him which…*sigh*), and seemed to know a few things about SOL to the point she knew/paid close attention to the fact that Akira was formerly head of security. For a debuting character in episode 14, this was intriguing and I wanted to see where our new female character would lead us. I’m a fan of all the female characters the show had so far at that point (Ema & Aoi) so I hoped her rather peppy personality would prove as an interesting contrast to those two.

…Except, it never did. Hayami hasn’t improved past her initial character debut, has only had like maybe a running total of three minutes screen-time in which she’s shown talking. She hasn’t grown and, rather, it seems as if her character potential has shrunk to the point she’s dull and people actually seem to forget she exists because she’s that forgettable as a character.

I mean, contrast her to Kitamura who also debuted the same time Hayami did in episode 14. Kitamura is not easily forgettable not just because his character isn’t attractive looking but because he’s interesting in a despicable kind of way.

Kitamura is a very selfish man who’s been put unfairly into a position of power another character deserved. He’s very greedy, very backstabbing, his abuse of his “minions” and his lust for more money makes him an interesting character to watch especially since he totes himself as this big and grand power and is really just a coward.

Not only that, but we keep seeing Kitamura over and over again, keep seeing him act as a villain to thwart Playmaker’s plans, to fight against Hanoi with the three masterminds, to abandon SOL to earn a place at Hanoi’s feet as data. He’s been so relevant to the plot that, without him, Playmaker would have had smoother sailing into the data bank (thus rendering Ema’s and Akira’s sneaky plan either ineffective or they get there too late for Akira to try and “Talk things out” with Playmaker). He also made the masterminds of Hanoi a credible threat with his bot army being defeated (and looking back at the duels with Playmaker and Blue Angel against the bots the fact that these 100 or bots were defeated so quickly is simply astounding) and his duel with Spectre leads to not only SOL being powerless in this time of crisis (bc they have no head of security now to try and figure out a way to fight back) but it also gives ample warning to the public about why to stay away (thus explaining why 99% of VRAINS players are not present along with the fact that Kitamura manipulated the news channels so no one would “interfere” with Hanoi’s plans).

If we erase Hayami, however, there’s not much that can be said about her impact on the show. The only two major things I can think of that she’s done are: telling Akira off about wanting to control his sister and by apparently notifying him every time a Link VRAINS broadcast is on. Ema already did the first thing by telling Akira he has to let his sister go (so Hayami is literally just repeating the message) while the latter means that apparently Akira doesn’t care about Link VRAINS (even though it was part of his former job and involves his unpredictable sister a majority of the time??) so he needs someone else to pass him along information on the news even though Hayami probably shouldn’t be doing that while she’s working??

Like, the only new things we’ve learned about her since her debut is that she is a fan of Blue Angel and that she, like Ema (albeit in a less familiar way), doesn’t want to see Aoi controlled by Akira. She doesn’t really do or say much that impacts the plot and even if you go so far to say she serves a love interest to Akira (the only valid purpose I can see Hayami having at the moment for the show in its entirety aside from walking information booth), then she’s a very poor love interest especially when you compare her to Ema (and not just because I ship Akira with Ema. I would love to ship Akira and Hayami too but there is utterly nothing substantial there that doesn’t currently scream unrequited or borderline obsessive while with Ema it’s more unsaid intimacy and full of mystery and intrigue).

Not only that but, aside from the fact that Hayami works at SOL, it literally seems as if her entire life revolves around Akira. She doesn’t have any hopes or dreams or outside connections that don’t lead back to Akira some way (meaning being Aoi Zaizen’s fangirl doesn’t count. If she liked Playmaker or Go it would be more credible but liking Akira Zaizen’s sister…nah, that’s just a cheap excuse for an “outside” interest). Hayami frankly doesn’t seem to exist outside her office with Akira. Hell, she might as well live in that office of theirs for all we know because there’s no mention of family or bills or her dreams or her hobbies or anything that isn’t somehow related to Akira or giving him information.

So, in the end, Hayami’s strictly a flat character in which her only purpose seems to be act as Akira’s way to get information on Link VRAINS/his sister while he’s at work. She doesn’t really push the plot in any meaningful way that couldn’t be negated by another character (or, hell, Akira himself) and she really doesn’t do much either outside of spilling coffee in her debut episode and simply just sitting around and talking or clacking away the keys at a keyboard.

And, as she’s one of only four female characters in the cast, it really hurts me to see that she’s lacking any true substance in her character, especially when there’s so much different from the other three! She’s the only one of the cast who lives a “normal” life and yet we don’t hear anything about what that life consists of?? Like, Aoi and Ema and Vyra each seem to burdened and troubled by something either subtly or not and yet here is Hayami, who is care-free and an everyday citizen, and the best we get from her is obsessing over a character instead of actually getting to know a member of the female cast who’s not troubled?

I mean, when you think about it, she’s technically Naoki’s counterpart in that while Naoki is a normal person who interacts with the main child - Playmaker - on a near daily basis, Hayami is the normal person who interacts with the main adult (as, when you compare Akira to Ema or Shoichi or even Dr. Kogami Akira has clearly had more relevance and plot importance than any of them so far). Yet, in comparison to Naoki who even gets his own VR form and mini sub-plot, Hayami is still a poorly-done character and hasn’t done much for the 16+ episodes since she’s first shown up.

And, while I admit we’re still early in the show and there is plenty of time for Hayami to shine just like Naoki or Kitamura or any of the other female characters of the cast, it sure as hell isn’t looking that likely. I get that she’s a side character but, as far as side characters go, she is absolutely the worst of them. She doesn’t have the personality or that Naoki or Vyra or Faust or Dr. Genome has, she doesn’t have the mystery and intrigue that Dr. Kogami and the Chess Pieces have, and she most certainly does not have major bearing on the plot like Kitamura had. She has potential to show us what “normal” in this world means, to give us insight that the other three female characters (+ most of the other cast) cannot and yet, as it is now, she’s been reduced to this rather flat and Akira-obsessive fangirl with little to no weight on the story of the show.

So, yeah, I want to like her but there’s just a variety of factors that accumulate in my disdain of her. Her episode 14 debut gave me hope but, after that, it’s hard not to admit she’s forgettable and literally just a pretty face in a cast that boasts itself on personality and mystery. Maybe, in the future, I’ll come around to actually liking her canon character but, as she is now, it’s really hard for me to like the show’s interpretation of her or even hope that she’ll get better.

Super short version if you don’t want to read my giant essay: I want to like Hayami but it’s hard to when her character is reduced to an Akira fangirl and, in comparison to other side characters, she falls really, really flat and almost has little to no bearing on the plot itself as of current. She feels like she’s there as a possible unrequited love interest but more so she feels like she’s only there to reinforce messages other people have told Akira and to give him information that he could probably find out himself about. She has potential as a “normal” character to show off what “normal” means in VRAINS and yet, outside of Akira, she seems to have no life, dreams, or anything that really makes her a living, breathing person like the rest of the cast VRAINS boasts. The show is in its early stages, I know that, but 16+ episodes in with only ~3 minutes screen time for Hayami in total does not bode well for her character nor does it give me hope that she’ll improve beyond being a character who practically seems to exist so long as Akira exists at SOL.
