AN: Belated Merry Christmas everybody! This was supposed to be out on Christmas Eve but it's been a busy week! We've had Christmas with different family members each day and then it was my boyfriend's birthday, but I finally finished editing this morning so enjoy!
------------------------------------------------
Bright and early on Christmas morning, Jo was woken up by the sounds of her youngest daughter getting out of bed. She heard the squeak of the bunk beds, and her footsteps on the hardwood floors, then felt her climb over her legs as she crawled in between them. Alex was next to her, lying on his back and snoring like a log. However there was just enough space for Edith to crawl over and rest on Jo's chest. She sat there for a moment before whispering in her tiny little voice, “Mama.”
“What is it, baby?” Jo whispered, her voice sounding more groggy than she expected as she blinked her eyes open to see Edith perched above her.
“Mama, is it Chriss-mas? Did Santa come?” Edith asked, her eyes big and bright.
Her tiny face was illuminated by the bits of sunlight streaming in from the curtains of the rustic wooden cabin that was their hotel room, casting a golden gaze around the room. Jo wrapped her arms around her, pulling her close and rolled them over. Edith giggled, snuggled into her before returning the favor and pressing a bunch of sloppy kisses to her face. Then Jo reached out for her watch and checked the time. It was a little after 7:30, and to be honest, Jo was surprised that Edith was the first one up and the only one awake.
“I don't know. Why don't you go look under the tree?” Jo suggested, looking over at the tiny tree perched on the table that the hotel had provided them.
Edith whipped her head around and looked around the room for a minute before spotting the tree with a mountain of gifts underneath it. Alex and she had played Santa the night before and had managed to stay quiet as they placed all the gifts. They managed to ship every single gift that girl had gotten this year to Colorado, where they were currently on vacation. Edith instantly popped up and gasped as she stared at the tree, her eyes as wide as plates.
She processed everything for a moment and stared at the tree before letting out a yelling scream, “Santa came! AHH!”
Edith's scream instantly woke up the rest of the family, except for Luna.
"”What is it? What happened?!” Alex asked, immediately jumping out of bed half awake, looking around the room.
Jo laughed as he stood there in his boxers and t-shirt, half awake and holding the Bible that was on the nightstand next to him as a weapon.
Helena sat up in her bed with her hands over her ears. “Mama, make her stop!”
“Edith, Edith!” Jo said, wrangling the little girl in her arms and tickling her sides as her screams turned into laughter. “You can't scream, baby girl!”
“But Santa, look!” Edith said as she wiggled out of Jo's arms and ran over to the Christmas present pile.
Alex sighed and set the Bible down as he sat on the bed, wiping his face. Jo laughed as she reached out to rub his back.
“He came, Mama. Santa remembered that we were on vacation!” Helena asked as she turned over in bed and roused Luna awake, signing to her, 'Luna, look, Santa came!'
Luna groggily got up and looked at the presents before widening her eyes, her jaw dropping as she looked between Alex and Jo before signing, 'Daddy, did Santa really bring all these gifts?'
‘Most of them, yes, baby, but a few of them are from your mom and me, as well as your aunties, uncles, and grandma too,’ Alex signed to her, leaning back into Jo's touch as he sat against her.
‘Look, look, this one is for you, Luna,’ Edith signed as she walked over with a medium-sized box. Luna smiled as Edith gave her the box but looked over at Jo and Alex before continuing.
'Go ahead, Little Moon, open it up,' Jo signed to her with a nod.
Luna smiled as she immediately ripped off all the packaging, quickly tearing the box open and squealing as she saw what it was. It was a kind of vibration sound that she could feel and that she always made when she was happy.
‘It's my camera,’ she signed before holding it up and showing off the blue instant Polaroid camera.
‘It's pre-filled with film, so you can take as many pictures as you want,’ Jo signed as Luna held it up, looked at it, then paused for a moment before clicking the button and taking a picture of them all.
‘What does it look like?’ Edith signed, bounding over and scrunching up against her sister as Luna pushed her away.
‘Edith, don't crowd me,’ Luna signed to her before pushing her away again as Edith tried to get closer.
“Don't worry, baby girl,” Alex said, scooping up Edith and hanging her upside down before giving her a shake as she roared with laughter. “Come on, let's open one of your presents now.”
Luna got up out of bed, carrying her camera over to Jo, who was snuggling next to her. Jo wrapped her arms around her and kissed her forehead before signing to her, ‘Do you like your present?’
‘I love it, thank you Mama,’ Luna signed back before hugging her.
‘You’re very welcome,’ Jo signed as she kissed her forehead.
“Alright, here's one for Miss Edith,” Alex said, setting a tall, but skinny box on the bed next to her. Edith didn't even hesitate to tear off the packaging and started jumping up and down as she stared at her gift.
“The Bluey house! The Bluey house!” Edith screamed as she jumped up and down.
Alex opened the box for her, pulling it out of its packaging as Edith immediately stopped jumping and reached for the little Bluey figure before jumping over to Jo.
“Look Mama, it's Bluey! Look Luna, look Helena!”
“I see, baby girl. Are you happy with your gift?” Jo said, laughing as Edith launched herself into her arms so fast that she had to let go of Luna, who dove away. Edith wrapped her arms around Jo like a baby koala.
“Yes, yes, yes!” Edith said before getting up as quickly as she had sat down and going back to her house. Alex helped her put it all together as Edith immediately started to play. Jo spotted Helena poking around the tree, looking at the labels of different gifts.
“Yours is there on the left, Helena,” Jo said, looking over at her and smiling.
Helena picked up the gift. It was a hard box that looked too large in her hand as she tore off the lid. She gasped as she held up the baby doll, cradling it in her arms as she looked down at it. “It's the real-life baby, the one that cries and wets and crawls!”
“Yeah, it is. Go on, turn it on,” Jo said as Helena set it on the bed. The brown haired baby started to crawl. She looked so happy in that moment, snatching her baby back up, wrapping it in her arms, and giving it a big hug.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” Helena said, reaching out and hugging Alex before crawling on the bed and hugging Jo.
“I'm glad you like it, Princess!” Jo said as she hugged her close.
“But listen, your mom and I are not changing any poopy diapers. We already did enough of that with the three of you,” Alex said, tickling Edith, who laughed.
“Okay, Daddy,” Helena said with a laugh.
“Alright, now here's one for you, Jo,” Alex said, handing her a gift. It was a good size and soft in her hands, and wrapped quite horribly. Jo laughed as she tore off the wrapping paper to reveal a dark blue Lululemon jacket.
“Alex, you didn't,” Jo said with a laugh as she held up the jacket, knowing how expensive it was.
“You deserved it. Look, it even has your name on it,” Alex pointed to the corner where it had ‘Dr. Jo Karev’ inscribed on the side.
‘We helped Daddy pick it out too,’ Luna signed as she sat next to her again, taking a picture as Jo smiled.
“I helped with the color! I know blue is your favorite Mama,” Helena said, pointing at the color.
“And we helped Daddy get the pants too!” Edith said before Alex clamped his hand over her.
“Shh, Edith, that's for later!” Alex teased her as Edith wiggled to get out of his grasp.
“Thank you,” Jo said and signed, looking at all of them. “Why don't you girls go get your Daddy's gift?”
‘I'll get it,’ Luna signed before she raced to the tree. She picked up a small package before handing it to Alex. ‘Here you go, Daddy. It's from all of us, but Mommy especially.’
‘Thank you, sweet girl,’ Alex said, leaning over and giving her a hug before he sat down and unwrapped his gift.
He smiled like a kid on Christmas as he ripped off the packaging, and Jo bit her lip in excitement as he opened the box. He smiled as he opened the leather wallet before looking up at her and flipping it open. His eyes started to sparkle as he read the inscription and put a hand over his mouth as he looked at the picture inside. It was a laminated picture of all the girls and Jo together, as well as an inscription, ‘Love from your girls,’ and then each of the girls' signatures, Jo had helped Edith's wite hers, engraved on the inner wallet.
“Do you like it, Daddy?” Helena asked, snuggling up next to him.
“I love it, baby. Thank you so much,” Alex said and signed to Luna, looking up at Jo, his eyes flickering with tears as he hugged them all.
‘Don't cry, Daddy. It's Christmas,’ Luna signed as she reached over and hugged him.
‘They're happy tears, baby girl,’ Jo signed for him as Alex nodded, wiping his cheeks.
“Alright, this better not be the first of many. Your old man can't be crying all day,” Alex said and signed with a laugh as he went back to the tree and grabbed a handful more presents, depositing them on the bed. “Alright, you three, go wild!”
The rest of the day was a mixture of laughter and excitement as all the girls opened the rest of their gifts. Luna got a photography book, several fictional books, a few new Barbies, and a telescope. Helena got several baby clothes, a stroller, a baby crib, and some more of her favorite tile magnets. Edith got the entire Bluey playset, some Bluey plush toys, and some Tonies for her music Tonie box. The girls also got some clothes, balancing stones, and a sensory swing, which they would have to wait to hang up until they got home.
Jo got the rest of her Lululemon set along with several other gifts, including a few new medicine magazine subscriptions, the new Stanley that she wanted, and some new AirPods. Alex got a beer-making kit, a massage gun, and a hot sauce collection that he had been wanting for a while. Then they ordered room service, ate breakfast, and watched the snowfall on the Colorado mountains from the window.
“Alright, are you girls ready to get going into the snow?” Alex asked as he started to get the snow gear out.
“But what about the mess?” Jo said, looking around at the hotel room. She could barely see the floor with all of the wrapping paper and little toys strewn everywhere and the breakfast trays littered the coffee table and the end of the bed.
‘I’m with Mama, we should at least clean a little bit,’ Luna signed, looking over at the mess.
“We’ll clean it up later, come on Jo, the snow is not going to wait all day,” Alex said with a smile, handing her the coat and her new Lululemon jacket. “Plus, you’ve got to test out your new jacket and see how warm it is.”
“Alright, but we have to get this cleaned up before dinner,” Jo said, taking the coat from him.
“Yeah, let’s go!” Edith shouted as she slipped on her boots and coat. “I’m ready!”
“Hold up, squirt, Mom will kill me if you go out without pants on,” Alex said, picking her up as she giggled and going to the closet to get out all of the snow stuff.
“Yeah, plus you’ll freeze to death,” Helena said and signed with a laugh, and Luna joined in.
“Girls,” Jo said and signed, giving them a look as Luna and Helena quickly put on their best sorry faces.
“Sorry,” they both whispered and signed as they looked at the ground.
“Come on,” Alex said and signed as he tossed them their coats. “Let’s just hit the slopes.”
After all the girls were snug and warm and everyone had grabbed the innertubes from the bottom, they hiked up to the sledding hill. It was a warm and clear crisp day. The sun dazzled off of the snow and everything was beautiful, but loud. The mountain was surprisingly busy, and there was a line to get to the top of the hill.
“Dad, can we take the snowboards over there?” Helena said, pointing to where they had a small Bunny Hill for newer snowboarders. It was less crowded and the two of them could start snowboarding as soon as they grabbed their boards from the rental place.
“Yeah, sounds good,” Alex said, handing his inner tub to the kid behind them. “Do you guys want to come with?”
‘I’m good,’ Luna signed as she looked over at the sledding hill. ‘I like sledding better, less falling on your face.’
“I want to go!” Edith said, jumping up and down and trying to climb on Alex.
“Baby girl, don’t climb on your dad,” Jo said, picking her up and holding her on her hip. “Besides, you said you didn’t want to snowboard when we first got here, and we didn’t sign you up for lessons yet.”
“Daddy, can I just have some time with you?” Helena asked, looking up at Alex with a pout.
Alex looked over at Jo, as they had a silent conversation. They had agreed to spend one-on-one time with each of the girls, and Helena was the only one who hadn’t spent any time with Alex yet. Although she and Jo had their mother-daughter time the first day they got there. Jo gave him a nod as he smiled and looked over at Edith. “Not this morning baby. But how about you and I go sign up for snowboarding lessons this afternoon after lunch?”
Edith sighed as she frowned and crossed her arms, “But I want to go now.”
“No means no, baby girl,” Jo reminded her as Edith pouted and sat down in the snow.
Helena and Luna exchanged a look before they looked down at Edith then looked up at their parents, and Jo just shook her head. “Alex, why don’t you and Helena go, and Luna and I will stay here with Edith in line.”
“Alright, I’ll see you later,” Alex said and signed, leaning in to give her a quick kiss. “Good luck.”
“Thanks, I’ll need it,” Jo said, giving him another quick kiss before he left.
The line moved up, and Jo and Helena took a few steps forward as they left Edith where she was. The people in line behind them stepped around her, but Jo kept her eye on Edith.
When they moved up again, Jo called out to her. “Come on, Edith, let’s go, otherwise you forfeit your place in line.”
“But there are too many!” Edith pouted as she looked at the line. “One, two, five, twelve. That’s so lot!”
‘You’re not counting right, there are only 10 people ahead of us,’ Luna signed to her with an eye roll.
Edith finally got off the ground and went up to where they were. “How much longer, Mama?”
“The line’s moving pretty fast, so hopefully it’ll be just another five minutes,” Jo said as they watched the line. “Why don’t you watch all the people going down the hill?”
Edith sighed, but was satisfied with that for a few minutes but then looked up at Jo as they moved back up the line. “Mama, there are three people ahead of us, and that one is a baby, she doesn’t count.”
“Yes, baby, but she still gets to go down the hill with her mama, just like you are with me.”
“How come I can’t go alone, how old do I have to be?”
‘You have to be at least four,’ Luna signed Jo could tell she was quickly getting fed up with her little sister.
“I’m three and a half, that’s four enough!”
‘No, it’s not! You’re still a baby, and you’ll always be!’
“Okay, shut up, both of you!”
“Mama!” They both turned to look at her as Jo just sighed.
“I mean it, it’s Christmas day, and you two are out here arguing, so I swear to God, if I hear one more word out of you, I’m going to march us back to the hotel room right now,” Jo said and signed, giving them her best ‘I mean it’ look. They both knew that she was more likely to go through with it than Alex, who would give in.
Both of them sighed and just looked at the line in front of them. They were both silent for approximately five minutes before Edith exclaimed excitedly as she signed to Luna, ‘It’s our turn, it’s our turn, Luna!’
The guy called them, and both she and Luna sat down in their inner tubes. Edith excitedly sat in her lap and practically wiggled as the inner tube attendant got them settled. When Jo looked over at Luna, she was slightly shaking and at the last second she climbed out of the inner tube.
‘I don’t want to go, I’ll go next time,’ Luna signed, walking back from the edge.
‘I’ll go with you!’ Edith signed, climbing out of Jo’s lap and grabbing hold of Luna’s hands before pulling her back to the inner tube. ‘We can be brave together!’
Okay,’ Luna signed, still hesitant as she climbed in with her sister.
She clung to Edith, and Jo asked the attendant to pause as she pushed the girls. ‘Are you guys sure?’
‘Yeah,’ Luna signed with a slight smile.
“Alright, one, two, three,” the attendant called out, also counting down with his fingers before he pushed the girls down.
Luna let out a shriek, but it was one of excitement, and Edith laughed. Jo nodded at them to push her as well. She followed her girls down the hill, and Luna and Edith had the biggest smile in the world. They all screamed and laughed the entire way. The girls got to the bottom just before Jo did, as she stopped about a hundred feet before them. They both instantly got up, grabbing the inner tube, running to her.
‘Mama, we’ve got to go again!’ they both signed as they started to drag her over to the line again.
------------------------------------------------
Late that night, they all gathered next to the crackling of an open fire among a crowd of kids and parents who were listening to Santa read the Christmas Story. The girls sat in front with all the other kids, while Alex and Jo lingered in the back, standing with the parents. The enchanting voice of Santa Claus filled the air, weaving a tapestry of Christmas magic. The girls were so spellbound by the story and even Edith managed to remain still. Santa's words painted vivid pictures as he used different tones, elaborate expressions, and gestures. Jo stood behind Alex as his arms wrapped around her waist. He was so diligent in trying to be sneaky and kiss her neck as his hands gently tracing patterns on her waist.
“Did you have a good Christmas, Mrs. Karev?” Alex whispered into her ear, his voice laced with tenderness, followed by a kiss on her earlobe.
“I had a very good Christmas, Mr. Karev,” Jo said, tilting her head and moaning as he kissed her again. They received some disapproving looks and throat clearing from someone next to them, but neither of them minded.
“You know, after this we could set the girls up with a movie and hop in the shower together,” Alex murmured, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
“We could,” Jo said, turning as her lips easily turned up in a smirk, as she conjured up a myriad of dirty things they could do in the shower. But then she looked back at her daughters. “But this isn't going to end for another 20 minutes.”
Alex groaned and gave her his signature frown as Jo shifted to his side and put an arm around him.
“Be good,” Jo said, turning to look at him, but rewarding him with a little peck.
“Fine,” Alex said, his eyes returning to their daughters.
“How was your time with Helena?”
“It was really good. She's such a natural, and better than her old man. We're going to have to try and find some slopes for her back home. How were Edith and Luna for you?”
Jo’s gaze shifted to the girls. Helena was sitting in front of Luna, signing to her, and glancing back at Santa every now and then. While Edith sat in her lap and snuggled against her big sister.
“I didn't tell you?” Jo said, her eyes widening as she smiled. “Luna was scared to go down the first time, but then Edith went with her. They laughed the entire way and Luna has been kinder to Edith since then. I'm hoping it'll last at least for another day.”
“She really did that! Our sweet girl,” Alex remarked, his heart swelling with pride as he looked at their youngest. “We have raised such good and kind girls.”
“Yeah, we have,” Jo said, looking at them before she shook her head. “I have no idea how we did it, though.”
“Me neither,” Alex chuckled, shaking his head. “I swear, I feel like I'm flying by the seat of my pants every time I have to really parent them.”
“Well, we must be doing something right,” Jo said with a laugh as she shook her head.
“I got to tell you, though, I think their daycare teachers are the ones that really get through to them,” Alex admitted, and Jo nodded in agreement. “By the way, did we get them something good for Christmas?”
“We got them a $40 gift card to Sephora and a gift box that I'd ordered off of Etsy.”
“Good.”
A comfortable silence settled over them as they smiled at their girls. Santa finished the story and invited the children to sit on his lap and receive a gift from the large bag beside him. Edith, always eager, shot up and was one of the first in line, waving her sisters over to her. As she sat on Santa's lap, Edith beamed as she talked to him. He gave her a soft brown bear and she immediately ran back to them, her face radiant with joy.
“Look, look!” Edith exclaimed, holding up the bear before pointing to the bear's arm. “Daddy, read it?”
“It says ‘Pinewood, Colorado’ that's the name of the place where we're staying.”
“Wow,” Edith said, hugging her bear close to her chest before Helena and Luna both came back with their gifts.
“What did you girls get?” Jo asked them, kneeling down to their level.
“I got a deer,” Helena said, holding up a white spotted deer.
‘I got a moose,’ Luna signed, showing off their brown fuzzy animals.
“Very cool,” Alex said as he brushed the fur on Helena's deer. “Now you guys have a special souvenir from Santa himself!”
‘Mama, did you know that Santa knew how to sign to me?’ Luna exclaimed, her cheeks flushed a delicate pink.
‘I saw that Little Moon!’ Jo signed as she giggled before looking over at Alex's displeased expression.
‘Oh, did he now?’ Alex signed, raising his eyebrow at them before looking over at Jo, who shook her head.
"Relax, Alex," Jo said, putting a hand on his chest.
“I'm relaxed,” Alex said, his lips a tight line as he glared daggers at Santa.
"Come on, girls, ready to go back to the room?" Jo said and signed as she reached out and took Luna's hand as she led them out of the crowded great room.
"Yeah, and you guys can watch a movie when we get up to the room," Alex added and signed, his smile returning with a glint of his eyes as he wrapped his arms around her waist, his hands dipping a little too low.
The prospect of a cozy movie night seemed to amplify their excitement as the girls scampered down the hallway, their voices echoing through the air. Jo and Alex walked behind them as Helena had started to sing along to the Christmas carols playing in the hallway. Edith did her best to sing with her while Luna danced along.
“Merry Christmas,” Alex murmured, his voice husky as he pulled back to look in her eyes before he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close, and pressed a tender kiss to her lips.
“Merry Christmas, Alex,” Jo's arms instinctively reached up to encircle his neck, her heart mirroring his sentiments.
She leaned in and gave him a deep kiss. Savoring the sweetness of his lips and the feeling of being enveloped in his embrace. In that moment, surrounded by the magic of Christmas and the warmth of their love, everything felt perfect. It was, without a doubt, a truly wonderful Christmas.

Summary: Alex Karev and Jo celebrate their daughter Luna’s first Christmas with their family and friends.
Words: 1864
December 25th, 2021
Jo finishes the last gift with a lavish curl against the dull side of her scissors. She exhales in joy at finishing wrapping the gifts for their family and friends who are on their way here to celebrate Christmas together.
For Jo it’s exciting to finally have a big group to celebrate this season of giving and stressful trying to find gifts for her chosen family members. Nevertheless, she smiles at her one-year-old daughter Luna who is watching her wrap gifts while she plays with her toy on the playmat.
“All done!” Jo puts the red gift under her armpit and Luna against her hip who grins happily as she’s being carried to the medium sized Christmas tree Alex helped pick while Jo decorated. Jo puts the small box on top of the pile of wrapped gifts she also prepared, “Can mommy plan the perfect first Christmas for you or what?”
“Don’t mention me I just helped picked out the tree.” Alex says sarcastically amused as he approaches his wife who grins at him, “And pick out the presents. And the games the kids would play. I mean I hardly did anything.”
“And this Luna used to be your daddy but on Christmas he is what we call a Grinch.” Jo tells her blonde daughter who reaches over for her dad with waving chubby arms melting the parent’s hearts.
Alex chuckles taking the baby from Jo, “One sight of you Little Moon makes my heart grow three sizes. It’s your first actual Christmas with us, are you excited? You get to spend time with your family, eat sweets, open presents, doesn’t that sound exciting?” Luna grins a wide nearly toothless smile causing Alex to kiss her cheek before the doorbell rings.
Jo gasps with a wide smile, “Who is at the door?”
Jo quickly walks to the door opening the door to find Meredith Grey on the other side with her kids, Zola, Bailey and Ellis in tow.
“Merry Christmas!” The Grey-Shepherd’s yell out together causing Jo to chuckle opening the door wide letting them in.
“Merry Christmas! You kids are just in time for Christmas bingo!” Bailey and Ellis yay rushing towards the table that is laid out with printable Christmas bingo cards with a deck of cards at the head of the table for the adult who is in charge, “Winner gets the first taste of Uncle Alex’s gingerbread cookies!”
Alex smiles at the kids smiling and getting ready to play, he sits at the head of the table shuffling the cards, “Okay guys rules of the game are I call out the picture on the cards, you mark it. You mark the pictures until you get four stamps up and down, right and left or across. First one to get one of those yells bingo and they win the first round.”
“We know how to play bingo Uncle Alex.” Zola points out with a grin, “Our teachers played them with us before break.”
“Yeah but there weren’t delicious cookies at stake.” Alex states with seriousness and a grin before pulling out the first card, “Okay first one is ugly Christmas sweater.”
Jo and Meredith watch the kids play the game with Alex using a funny voice every time he announces the card. Jo smiles at her husband who puts up a tough front with everyone except her and the kids. Luna is his sidekick on the highchair next to him grinning at the view of the table.
Jo looks at her family with so much love and tenderness, knowing how hard this last year has been for all three of them. Alex and Jo faced obstacles in their work and private life from the covid virus, burnout and Luna needing to stay at the NICU for her health problems. Despite the turmoil of 2020 Jo wouldn’t change it if it meant this moment right here and now was not happening.
Meredith grins as well proud of how far Alex has come from the arrogant, entitled man child into this kind and fun-loving father who welcomes people into his home with open arms. She is not only thankful to have him in her life but to also be a part of his life where their kids can hang out and be friends while she talks with him and his wife who is right next to her.
“He was so good with kids before he had one of his own.” Jo states with affection, “Now he’s even better which I did not think was possible.”
“If you had told me 18 years ago that the horny, sweaty intern who invaded my personal space and practically dry humped me would be my best friend and the best uncle to my kids I would think you were using dark humor.” Meredith chuckles nostalgic as another memory comes to her, “I used to think of him as dirty Uncle Sal.”
Jo narrows her eyes confused at her friend with an amused grin before asking, “What?”
“Dirty Uncle Sal.” Meredith repeats before elaborating, “You know the one who embarrasses you at family reunions and can’t be left alone with the teenage girls, but you invite him to the picnic anyway.”
Jo chuckles at that description, “You know a part of me is glad I didn’t know him back when his attitude earned him that horrifying title.”
“Back then I had a mother with dementia so I took what I could get with a chosen family.” Meredith explains before turning back to Alex who kisses the top of Luna’s head before calling out the next picture, “But now I wouldn’t choose anyone else to be in my life and my kids.”
“Same.” Jo shares with a grin before looking at Luna who is on her dad’s lap being held by her dad while he holds up the cards with his other hand, “Luna is lucky to have Auntie Meredith who has a lot of stories about her daddy that she’s not gonna hear until she leaves for college.”
“Make it till med school.” Meredith warns the new mom, “Trust me you’ll thank me for that. Christmas with you guys and our kids is gonna be a tradition from now on. I don’t care if I’m in Minnesota or Germany we are gonna do this every year no matter what. I know the kids would love it and so would I.”
“Me too.” Jo agrees surprised at how far her and Meredith’s friendship has come over the last decade. She looks at Luna in Alex’s arm as she holds up a candy cane in observation, “I want to give my little girl the childhood I never had, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween heck even Groundhog Day. I want to give her a family to celebrate with, blood or not.”
Just then the doorbell rings causing Jo to grin as she can guess who is already here, “And here comes the blood, excuse me.”
Jo opens the door and as she expected her sister-in-law, Amber DeLuca nee Karev and her husband Andrew DeLuca are here with gifts in their arms. Behind them is Andrew’s sister Carina and her wife Maya Bishop who are holding food trays.
“Merry Christmas.” Amber greets before coming in exhaling in relief at the warmth from the cold weather along with the others, “I hope you don’t mind but we brought Maya and Carina with us.”
“Oh no please come in the more the merrier.” Jo motions for the women to enter the house, “Merry Christmas you guys, how are the holidays at the station?”
The family enter the living room where Amber and Andrew greet Alex and the kids. Amber gasps at the bingo, joining them with her husband standing over her and observing.
Maya smiles at the sight of a family gathering she has been deprived of most of her life before answering Jo’s question, “We wrapped gifts for the kids, Pru got to spend the night with Ben and Bailey and Carina and I made our official announcement.”
Jo looks curious as Carina explains with a smile, “We’re gonna start trying to have a baby.”
“What?!” Jo exclaims in joy, “Oh my god congratulations you two!”
Alex claps happy for them as well, “All right! I recommend adopting if that’s on the table. And just to put it out there, Alex is a great name for a boy or a girl.”
“And Jo.” His wife puts out there as well, feeling giddy at the idea of another baby in their family tree.
Maya chuckles at this display finding it sweet her baby will have many uncles and aunts who will compete for baby time, “We will take both into consideration but for right now my wife and I are just gonna enjoy the holidays before taking a deep dive into the world of baby making.”
Carina wraps her arms around Maya’s torso pulling her towards her chest, “But hopefully sometime next year there’s gonna be another chubby cheeked baby to join us for the holiday parties with our extensive family.”
Jo claps at that with a wide smile, “I know I’m not technically related to either of you, but I claim favorite auntie status.”
“Over your husband’s dead body.”, Amber looks at her offended by that statement as the actual sister-in-law of the DeLuca-Bishop’s.
Andrew chuckles at her competitive spirit kissing the top of her head, “One thing is for sure I am definitely gonna be the favorite Zio, that’s uncle in Italian and I will be the best one.”
Alex chuckles shuffling the cards, “Yeah keep telling yourself that bro.”
Amber narrows her eyes at her brother, “You already have like three nieces and nephews who think the sun shines out your-”
“Read the table!” Alex warns stopping Amber from cursing in front of the kids.
Zola rolls her eyes a feeling like she is already grown up, “I’m 11 Uncle Alex, I know the word ass.”
Meredith widens her eyes horrified, “And how do you know that word?”
“Melissa and I binge watch Stranger Things over at her house all the time.” Zola explains causing Alex to snort at this funny obstacle of his friends.
“Remind me to call her parents and inform them of child locks.” Meredith tells Zola who shrugs turning back to the game.
“It’s fine Mer.” Alex comforts her, “My siblings and I cursed like sailors when we were younger than her and we turned out okay.”
Meredith glares at him causing him to realize how that sounded, “Relatively speaking. Okay kids Christmas Tree.”
“Bingo!” Bailey declares causing his sisters to groan as he holds up the proof on his bingo card, “Now can I have a cookie?”
Alex chuckles at his eagerness pulling out the holiday tin box that has the cookies before handing one to Bailey, “Go nuts kid.”
Bailey chomps on the cookie causing his mom to smile at her family before joining them on the dining table along with DeLuca, Carina, Maya and Jo who lifts Luna from Alex’s lap and hold her in her arms. Jo sits next to Alex kissing him on the cheek before joining him in hosting their Christmas family gathering.

Uncomfortably Numb [25/?]||FFN
Rating: NC-17/Explicit
Pairings: Meredith Grey/Derek Shepherd, Lexie Grey/Mark Sloan
Meredith isn't the only Grey to make it home alive after the plane crash. How does Lexie's survival affect everyone else's recovery? With Mark gone and returning to the O.R. as a surgeon an unlikelihood in her uncertain future, can Lexie really say she's survived?
AO3||FFN
“You know that new couch of yours?" Lexie asked. "Depending on the height of the cushions, I might be able to transfer with minimal help. The angle of the arm determines whether I could support myself lying on it, or if I’ll start tipping like Zola playing ‘I’m a Little Teapot.’ I might stay that way, or I’ll slide while repositioning, or something will spasm. Then, there’s the running countdown in my head for when I have to do something; when I can take something; if it wouldn’t be better for me to be spending another fifteen minutes in my standing frame. That’s to get the five minutes of contentment you get every day when you get home and throw yourself on the thing.”

It’s you I want
(George O’Malley x gn!reader angst Alex Karev x gn!reader fluff)
Details: Nurse Y/N has fallen for Dr. O’Malley, but is overlooked time and again.
(Reader is described as shorter than Karev and O’Malley)
Word Count: 3.28k
You worked as a nurse at Seattle Grace for the past four years. You’ve seen your fair share of interns, some have stayed, some left, some are obnoxious and arrogant, and others are so passive that they get flushed out.
At first, this is what you thought would happen with George O’Malley. There were many times when you were at the nurses station, watching him get overshadowed by his fellow interns. You felt bad for him, and there was his whole puppy thing going on, so there were times when you would help him with his scut work, giving him pointers here and there.
After a while, you felt your feelings grow from pity, to friendship, to admiration. George was sweet, and caring. He would tell you about his family during downtimes, and you would talk about yours. You felt a connection with him that you haven’t felt in a while. But he also talked to you about Meredith. He would talk, and talk, and talk some more. He would gush about her beauty and her intelligence, how funny she was, every single quality was attractive to him. She was everything you weren’t. You knew nursing was in no way lower than being a doctor, but you felt somehow smaller than her.
But even with his feelings for Meredith you couldn’t put aside your own feelings for George. How he would bring you coffee in the mornings, buy you a little snack whenever you were having a rough day, hold you while you cried if you lost a patient. It was so hard to not fall for George O’Malley, and tried as you might you did.
You were venting to another nurse about your feelings for George.
“I just can’t get George out of my head,” you sighed, “he’s just so damn cute and so caring.”
“Y/N, honey, you have to tell him.” your friend responded.
“I can’t,” you shook your head, “not when he has eyes for someone else.”
A sweet voice butted in, “Who has eyes for someone else?”
You jumped and swiveled in your chair to see George standing there, leaning against the station. The other nurse took the opportunity to get back to her work. Your cheeks heated and eyes widened, “How much of that did you hear?”
“Not much, just the end part about having eyes for someone else.” George explained, “So who’s the lucky guy?”
You breathed a subtle sigh of relief to this, “Nobody, really, it doesn’t matter.” You tried to go about your work.
“C’mon, Y/N,” he groaned, “this is the first time you’ve expressed interest in someone!”
That he knew.
You could tell he wasn’t about to let this go. You looked around, hoping to get an idea of what to say.
Eventually your eyes land on Dr. Karev talking to Dr. Stevens.
“Karev.” You stated, hoping he believed it.
George widened his eyes and shook his head quickly at that. “Alex? Really? He doesn’t seem like your type.”
He’s not.
“I don’t know something about him,” you lied, “he’s just so dreamy.”
You internally vomited. Alex Karev was a manwhore and hellspawn. He’s slept with half of the nurses, and insulted the other half. He hadn’t done either in his short interactions with you, luckily, but that didn’t help your opinion of him.
George was silent for a few seconds, blinking a bit rapidly, before he smiled at you.
“How about I set you up on a date with him?” he suggested.
Now you were gonna vomit.
“Oh no,” you shook your head and your hands, “no need, besides I don’t think he’d go for someone like me?” Your chest tightened in dejection.
“Someone like you?” George asked in surprise, “Y/N, you’re amazing! I can’t imagine anyone would turn you down.”
You bit your lip, chest tightening even more. George didn’t realize how he was squeezing your heart, threatening to destroy it. You thought about it for a second before you closed your eyes.
“Fine,” you sighed.
“Alright!” he jeered, “Y/N, I know what it’s like not to be noticed. You deserve this, even if I don’t really understand your interest in him.”
You sighed once more before George gave you two thumbs up and backed away before rushing off.
Once he was out of sight you groaned and dropped your head into your hands.
You heard the swivel of a chair once more, “you’ve gotten yourself into a big mess here, Y/N.”
You turned your head to look to your friend again, “Who knows, maybe Alex will help me get my mind off George.”
Not letting your mind linger on the thought much longer, you went back to work checking in on patients and updating charts. Before long you forgot about George’s suggestion, focusing completely on your work.
The end of the day came and you were getting ready to punch out before a knock on the desk alerted you to the presence of someone in front of you. You looked up to see none other than Alex Karev. Your eyes widened and you saw George not too far behind him giving you two thumbs up.
“Y/N,” Alex smiled, “a little birdie told me you may have taken a bit of an interest in me.”
You gave him a thin smile back, blinking at his boldness.
“Did they? And what do you think of that?” you asked, hoping for rejection.
“I think,” he leaned in, “I should take you out to dinner.”
Your cheek flushed. You weren’t used to someone taking an interest in you, let alone be so forward with it.
“Um, yeah, sure.” you stammered, smiling shyly.
“Drinks tomorrow? Meet here at 8?” he suggested with a sly smile.
“Sure,” you agreed, “it’s a date.”
Alex smiled and knocked once more, walking away.
Your heart was beating faster than you thought it would. Unexpectedly so.
“Sooo…” George inquired, worried.
“We’re getting drinks tomorrow.” you smiled a bit wistfully.
“What?”
“What?”
“You’re going on a date?” George asked incredulously.
You recoiled a bit at that, “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing just…” he trailed
“No, go on.” you insisted, getting a bit heated, “what do you mean?”
“You just don’t seem like his type.” he admitted.
You blinked at him a few times and licked your teeth.
“Am I undateable?” you urged, nodding your head.
“What?!” George almost shouted, “No, that’s not what I meant.”
“That’s what it sounded like.” you countered, “I’m not a nun. Men find me attractive.”
“That’s not what I’m saying, Y/N.”
“No, you’re just surprised that he would go on a date with me.” you stated roughly, “You know what George, I’m heading out.”
You clocked out, grabbing your bag and rushed away.
The drive home had you stewing, angry punk music playing over the radio. When you got home you slammed the apartment door closed, thinking of George’s reaction to your date with Alex. He was the one who suggested a date, why would he do that if he didn’t think it would happen? Where did he find the audacity to tell you that you weren’t Alex’s type? You had listened to him go on and on about Meredith, so why was he acting like this when something romantic was happening to you?
All of these thoughts ran through your head before another solidified within your mind. You were going to treat tomorrow like an actual date. Whether you were originally interested or not, you are now. You went to the bathroom to prepare for the next day, shaving, exfoliating, and a face mask. You went to bed determined to make the date successful.
The morning came and you had a shift right before the date. You wore your scrubs but packed your best outfit for after, making sure that it wouldn’t get too wrinkled.
You went about your day as you would usually, except for avoiding George here and there. Any time that you would see him approaching you shot him a look that led him away. You were still pissed off and didn’t want to see him.
The day came to an end and you changed into your outfit. It fit you in all the right places, putting your best features on display. You looked into the mirror, fixed a few pieces of hair and sighed. You were actually anxious, and not in a I-don’t-wanna-go way but in a I-want-this-to-go-well way. Thinking about it throughout the day you realized that Alex Karev was attractive, and even though you had heard bad things about him, he hadn’t done anything to you. You were starting to get a bit giddy.
You walked out to the nurses station and saw Alex waiting for you in a nice pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and a flannel. When he looked up to see you, a small smile spread across his face. He took a few steps to meet you where you were, a small gesture but one you noticed.
“You look,” Alex breathed, “good.”
You blushed and smiled under his gaze, “you do too.”
Alex scratched the back of his neck and let out a small chuckle.
“Joe’s?” you suggested.
“Yeah.” he smiled, “let’s go.”
You both walked in comfortable silence, shoulders bumping now and then.
When you got to the bar it was a bit crowded but not too loud. You scanned the bar for seats and locked eyes with George, who was sitting with Meredith and Christina. You quickly looked away and found a booth in the corner, away from the crowd.
You tugged on Alex’s sleeve and nodded towards the booth. He nodded back before taking your hand and leading you through the crowd of people. The action was shocking to you, and made your heart race. Once you got there, Alex sat you down and asked what you wanted. You gave him the drink, he nodded before going to the bar to order.
You sat there and stared at the table, feeling your cheeks with the back of your hand, surprised to feel them flushed. You smiled to yourself, surprised. So far Alex was nothing if not a gentleman and you were a bit happy you decided to go on the date.
After a beat you could feel holes being bored into your skull, you turned your head to see the trio from earlier staring at you. Meredith was staring with amusement, Christina with curiosity, and George with an expression you couldn’t read. They all looked away quickly, Christina and Meredith giggling a bit and George silent. You shook your head, not letting them get to you, and Alex returned with your drinks and a basket of peanuts.
You thanked him as he set your drink in front of you and took a small sip. He nodded and smiled in response. You decided that if this date was going to be successful you had to be bold.
“So, Alex,” you started, “why ask me on a date?”
He looked at you curiously, a mischievous smile playing on his face.
“Well, one, you were interested,” he counted off, to which you rolled your eyes, “and two you’re… admirable.”
You blinked back at him, smile splitting across your face, “Admirable?”
“Yeah, I don’t know,” he shakes his head, “your presence is commanding. You have the respect of the doctors, of your peers, hell you have my respect. You advocate for your patients and you actually care for each and every one of them. You’re admirable.”
You sat there a bit stunned. Alex admired you. He respected you. He saw you. He saw you. For the first time in a long time you felt appreciated and proud.
“Now you,” he insisted, “why me? I mean I do have a reputation.”
You didn’t think he would ask you that, which was a bit stupid considering you just asked him. You thought for a second. Why were you excited earlier? Why not turn down the date? Thinking back on your interactions with Alex Karev, you had an answer.
“One,” you numbered, mirroring him, “you’re pretty easy on the eyes.” He chuckled at your admission.
“And two, you work hard. Harder than most. Sure you walk around all cocky but I can see that you don’t just want to be a doctor, but a good doctor.”
He looked away smiling, scratching his neck again, a nervous habit you noted.
As the night went on, the conversation flowed rather freely. You both talked about interesting cases, hobbies outside of work, traded funny stories. You didn’t expect it but the two of you clicked rather easily. He wasn’t afraid to express his attraction to you and you liked the attention. He made you laugh. Really laugh, even if it was teasingly at your expense. You ribbed him just as hard, to which he would laugh. You couldn’t tell if it was the alcohol or the attention or just Alex, but you were genuinely enjoying yourself.
It was getting late and as you were just getting off your shift it was time to go home. You and Karev walked out the bar together, arms touching, practically holding hands. He hailed you a cab and opened the door for you.
“Thank you for tonight,” you started, “it was… really great.” You smiled up at him, cheeks flushed.
“I had a good time too,” Alex admitted, “I would, uh, like to do it again sometime.”
“Me too,” you agreed.
You bit your lip a bit sheepishly before leaning forward and planting a kiss on his cheek. He looked a bit shocked but smiled.
“See you later, Alex,” you waved goodbye, closing the door and giving the driver your address.
You closed the door to your apartment and leaned against it, covering your mouth and smiling a bit. Being around Alex seemed… easy. He was more caring and thoughtful than he looked. It wasn’t hard to like him. The conversation never got boring. As all of these thoughts ran through your mind, you realized something. You hadn’t thought of George almost the entire night. Maybe, you didn’t need to.
You took a shower, letting the hot water run over you. All you could think about was Alex and when you’d see him next. You had the next day off, but you would see him when you worked next. The idea of it planted a smile on your face and butterflies in your stomach. That night you went to sleep content.
The next few weeks had you floating. You and George were talking again after he apologized but that’s not why. Alex Karev was the reason. He would come visit you at the nurses station, flirting and joking. On the occasion that you had lunch at the same time, you would eat together, sharing your food at times. You went on a second date and then a third. After the third, you felt bad about how everything started. About not being honest with Alex. After work one day, you pulled Alex aside into an on-call room.
Your heart was going to beat out of your chest. What if this hurt him? What if he thought you were pathetic? What if he wanted to break things off?
“Y/N? What’s wrong?” Alex asked, “are you okay?”
The concern in his voice made you feel even worse, you were pacing a bit.
“I have to tell you something,” you sighed, “I haven’t been completely honest with you. And it’s eating me up.”
“What is it?” Alex placed a hand on your shoulder.
You looked into his eyes and frowned before looking down.
“So our first date,” you started, “you know how George told you I was interested in you? I wasn’t. I had feelings for George and he walked up on me talking about it and asked who I was talking about and I said you and I didn’t expect him to set us up. But I really did want to go on that date with you and I really did enjoy it, and it’s not just me getting over him I really really like you, and I felt so bad not being honest.”
“Y/N-“ he interrupted.
“Please don’t hate me.” you pleaded.
“Y/N!” He put both of his hands on your shoulders, “I know.”
“What?” you breathed.
“I know you had feelings for George,” he confessed, “I could see the way you looked at him. I was surprised when he said you had feelings for me. I figured I’d ask you out, you’d say no, and that was that. But you said yes, and I had the best time. And then we went on a second date and suddenly, you didn’t look at George the way you used to. I don’t care if you had feelings for George, as long as I’m the one you want now.”
You smiled up at him wistfully, bringing his face down to yours for a kiss.
You had kissed before, but they were just a few quick pecks at the end of the date. This was something more, it was soft and deep. Passionate but not lustful. It was everything you could have ever hoped it would be. The two of you broke away and you looked up at him, arms around his neck, “Alex Karev, you are the one I want.” He smiled before leaning down and kissing you again.
That day was the day your relationship with Alex truly started. He introduced you officially to the rest of the interns, aside from George, who you already knew. You’d sit with the five of them during lunch from time to time. There were times when you would catch George looking at you weird or rolling his eyes at you and Alex.
All of this came to a head one day when George caught you as you were about to leave. You were going to have a movie night with Alex, the two of you holding hands about to walk out the door.
“Y/N,” George called as he jogged up to you, “I need to talk to you.”
You looked to Alex and told him to go ahead, giving him a kiss on the cheek before approaching George.
“What’s up George?” you asked.
He pulled you aside into a on-call room for a bit of privacy. He looked around and took a heavy sigh.
“Break up with Karev.” he stated, as if he were mentioning the weather.
“I’m sorry, what?” you almost shouted.
“Look, Alex isn’t right for you,” he explained, “I didn’t realize it before but.. Y/N I want you. I need you.”
You stood there, staring at the man in front of you, trying to find any hint of a joke in his expression. When you couldn’t find any you felt a wave of anger wash over you.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” you actually shouted this time, “you need me? I fucking pine after you for months, listening to you gush about Meredith, and now that I’m happy with Alex you fucking NEED me. No. No, I can’t, George. You are far too late. Alex actually sees me. He’s direct and makes me feel secure. He’s loving and caring and funny and I can’t go through what you put me through again. I can’t.”
You turned around and left the room, slamming the door behind you. You sped out the door and into the parking lot, seeing Alex waiting for you by his car. You walked up and wrapped your arms around him, pulling him close.
“What was that about?” he asked.
“I’ll tell you when we’re home, you’ll thank me later.” you smiled up, kissing him.

Healing Hearts
includes: alex karev in the beginning of his peds residency, a seattle grace mercy west merger which involves a new mercy west transfer....
black fem surgical resident! reader x alex karev
song inspiration: ivy- taylor swift
---------------------
Y/N walked into Seattle Grace, the bustling environment a sharp contrast to her previous residency. As a new resident transfer, she knew she had to prove herself. Her heart pounded with a mix of excitement and nervousness as she reported for her first day on Arizona Robbins' pediatric service.
"You're the new resident, Y/N?" Arizona greeted her with a warm smile. "Welcome to Peds. You'll be working closely with Dr. Karev today. He knows my service and he'll help you if you have any questions."
Y/N had heard of Alex Karev's reputation. He was known for his exceptional skills with children but also for his abrasive personality. She was determined not to let his reputed arrogance faze her.
When she met Alex in the pediatric ward, she was struck by his intense eyes and the air of confidence he exuded. "You're the new transfer?" he asked, not looking up from the chart he was reviewing.
"Yes, I'm Y/N," she replied, trying to keep her tone professional.
"Okay, let's get one thing straight. I don't have time to babysit," Alex said, finally looking at her. "Just stay out of my way, and we'll be fine."
Y/N bit back a retort. "I'm here to learn and help. Let's just focus on the patients."
Their first case together was a young boy named Liam, suffering from cardiomyopathy. The child's condition was delicate, and his treatment required careful coordination. Despite their initial friction, both Y/N and Alex were deeply invested in Liam's well-being.
"His latest tests show worsening heart function," Y/N said, frowning at the results. "We need to act fast."
Alex nodded. "We need to discuss his case with Dr. Robbins. If we don't come up with a new plan, he won't make it."
They presented their findings to Arizona, who decided on a risky but potentially life-saving surgery. Throughout the procedure, Y/N and Alex worked in perfect sync, their combined skills bringing the best possible care to Liam. In the days following the surgery, Y/N and Alex found themselves spending more time together. They worked late into the night, monitoring Liam's progress and making sure he was stable.
----------------------
One evening, after a particularly exhausting shift, they found themselves alone in the residents' lounge. Alex, surprisingly, broke the silence.
"So, you're a Mercy West transfer?" he asked, his tone less harsh than usual.
"Yeah," Y/N replied, sipping her coffee. "Since the merger. What about you? You've been here a while, right?"
"Yeah, since my intern year." Alex said. "It's a great program. "
Y/N nodded. "I can see that. But I like it so far. The team is great, and the cases are challenging."
Alex looked at her, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "You handled Liam's case well. Most new residents would have freaked out."
Y/N felt a warm flush of pride. "Thanks. You weren't so bad yourself."
--------------------
As the weeks passed, they continued to work together, their initial animosity giving way to mutual respect. They shared stories about their backgrounds, their dreams, and their fears. Y/N found herself looking forward to their shifts together, her heart skipping a beat whenever Alex smiled at her. One day, as they were preparing for another surgery, Y/N noticed Alex seemed distracted. "Everything okay?" she asked gently.
Alex hesitated before answering. "Just...family stuff. My brother's in town, and it's complicated."
Y/N placed a reassuring hand on his arm. "If you need to talk, I'm here."
Alex looked at her, surprise and gratitude in his eyes. "Thanks, Y/N. I might take you up on that."
Their bond continued to grow, each moment together strengthening their connection. They laughed more, confided in each other, and began to realize that the line between professional and personal was blurring.
One night, after another successful surgery, they found themselves standing on the hospital roof, the city lights sparkling below them.
"You know," Alex said, his voice soft, "I never thought I'd say this, but I'm glad you're here."
Y/N smiled, her heart swelling with emotion. "Me too, Alex. Me too."
As they stood there, side by side, they knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together. In the midst of the chaos and the heartbreak of Seattle Grace Mercy West, they had found something unexpected: each other.
--------------------
During the weeks following their initial meeting, Y/N and Alex found themselves thrown together in a variety of challenging cases. Each case revealed more about their personalities and work ethics, slowly breaking down the walls they had built around themselves.
In one particularly intense case, they treated a toddler with a rare genetic disorder. The child's condition was rapidly deteriorating, and both Y/N and Alex had to rely on each other to come up with a treatment plan.
"His genetic markers indicate a possible enzyme deficiency," Y/N pointed out during one of their late-night strategy sessions. She was surrounded by stacks of medical journals and lab reports.
Alex leaned over the table, scanning the data. "Good catch. Let's run a specific panel to confirm and then we can start the enzyme replacement therapy."
Their combined efforts paid off, and the toddler began to show signs of improvement. The victory was a turning point in their relationship. They began to see each other as partners rather than competitors.
One day, after a long shift, Y/N and Alex found themselves in the on-call room, too exhausted to go home. They lay on opposite bunks, the room dimly lit by a small bedside lamp.
"Why did you choose pediatrics?" Y/N asked, breaking the comfortable silence.
Alex turned his head to look at her. "Kids are resilient. They can go through hell and still bounce back. I guess I wanted to be a part of that."
Y/N nodded, understanding. "I get that. I love their spirit, their will to fight. It’s inspiring."
As the days turned into weeks, they shared more personal stories. Y/N learned about Alex’s difficult childhood and his struggles with his family. In return, Y/N opened up about her own challenges, including the pressures she faced at her previous residency.
Their late-night conversations became a routine, each one drawing them closer. They began to anticipate each other's needs in the operating room, moving with a synchronicity that amazed their colleagues.
One evening, after successfully performing a complex surgery on a newborn, they sat in the hospital cafeteria, finally allowing themselves to relax.
"Do you remember the first time we met?" Y/N asked with a smile.
Alex chuckled. "Yeah, I wasn't exactly welcoming."
"That's an understatement," Y/N replied, laughing. "But you've grown on me, Karev."
"You too, Y/N. You too."
Their eyes locked, and for a moment, the bustling cafeteria faded away. They both knew something significant had shifted between them.
As the relationship evolved, so did their feelings. They began to steal glances at each other in the hallways, their touches lingered a little longer, and their conversations took on a deeper, more intimate tone.
One night, after another grueling shift, they found themselves alone on the hospital roof again, the cool night air providing a welcome respite.
"Sometimes, I wonder how I got so lucky to have you as a partner," Alex said, his voice sincere.
Y/N turned to him, her heart pounding. "I feel the same way, Alex."
He reached out, taking her hand in his. The touch was electrifying, sending a shiver down Y/N’s spine. They stood there, hand in hand, the city lights below them, knowing that they had found something rare and precious in each other.
He stepped closer, cupping her face in his hands. "Then let's see where this goes."
They shared their first kiss under the starlit sky. From that moment on, they faced every challenge together, their love growing stronger with each passing day. In the chaotic world of Seattle Grace Mercy West, they had found their calm, their solace, and their love.

Happy Monday! I hope I did this request justice, tried to keep it light with a bit of angst. Not sure where I want these two to end up but let me know what you think!
Requested by the lovely @caseyandsloan
Pairing: Mark Sloan x Fem!Reader (gave her a name but no descriptions used)
Warnings: A bit of Angst, Mark being Mark.
“Annalise, wait-“
I rolled my eyes at the sound of the familiar voice trailing behind me.
“Don’t you dare ‘Annalise’ me. It’s DOCTOR Grey to you, Doctor Sloan. I have no interest in speaking to you so please go whore yourself to any other attending,”
I continue walking until I reach the nursing bay, pulling out one of my patient’s charts and looking into their case. Mark stood in front of me, and gave me an apologetic smile.
“Fine, “Doctor” Grey, can you please just hear me out. I came to Seattle to find you, to apologize. I want to be part of your life again. What I did was a mistake, but you have to know that I never stopped loving you,” he pleaded, his eyes begging me to believe him.
My heart wavered, feeling a million and one emotions in a span of a few seconds. Our life together flashed before my eyes; our first date, our time during medical school together with our friends, being best man and maid of honor at Derek and Addison’s wedding, finding out we were pregnant. The last memory to cross my mind however, was the scene I walked into back in New York. The way he and my ex-best friend Addison Montgomery, were in bed together. My gaze immediately hardened once more.
“Here’s what you’re NOT going to do, Mark. You’re not going to show up to my place of work and bat your baby blue eyes at me in hopes of me taking you back. You ripped my heart into *shreads* Mark. I loved you. Part of me still does. But you don’t get to prey on that minuscule part of me. Not anymore. Now get the hell out of my sight before I call security,” I could feel my eyes water as I glared at him, the hurt fueling my heart.
Before Mark could say anything else, I heard a voice I’d never been more thankful speaking up from behind me.
“Is everything alright, Annalise?” I turned to find Miranda Bailey staring at me with her arms crossed, turning her head to shoot daggers at Mark. My sister, Meredith, was standing beside her along with the rest of the interns, looking on.
“Everything’s fine Miranda, thank you. Come on Meredith, I think you and Yang on my service today,” I walked forward, hearing my sister’s sneakers trail behind me. Rounding the corner I paused against the nearest wall and let out a deep breath. Meredith came to a short stop behind me.
“So…who was that?”
I scoffed humorlessly. “That, Mer, was Mark Sloan,”
“Wait. THE Mark Sloan? The guy who slept with your best friend? Derek’s best friend?Jolie’s father? THAT Mark Sloan?” Meredith’s eyes widened comically and both she and Christina looked back down the hall, as if trying to catch a glimpse of the man in question.
“Yup. The one and only jackass,” I huffed. I took a deep breath, put on my game face, and pushed off the wall. Mark Sloan had taken so much from me, and I wasn’t going to let him piss me off at my place of work anymore.
“Wait, wait. Derek’s best friend, who slept with Derek’s WIFE was married to you, Derek’s other best friend? What, was this some sort of doctor orgy?” Christina said as we made our way to our first patient.
“First off, we were never married. We were together for six years. But welcome to the Grey-Sloan-Shepherd family dynamic, Yang. Stick around, there’s so much more to come,” I rolled my eyes as we reached the patient’s room. The day continued and I managed to forget about Mark. That is, until I saw Derek punch him in the middle of the nursing bay. I gasped, along with the rest of the on-lookers before following Derek with my eyes as he walked away.
“That was one hell of a punch, Shepherd’s a badass!” I turned to see Alex Karev smirking to George O’Malley who looked like a fish out of water as his eyes trailed between Derek, Mark, Meredith, and finally to me. I raised an eyebrow at him, and he immediately looked away, a deep blush spreading along his cheeks.
I sighed. Fuck, this was going to be one hell of a fucking day.
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
The sound of a lunch tray slamming down onto the table tartled me from my deep thoughts. I looked up to see Callie Torres and Miranda Bailey looking at me sheepishly. I nodded and both women sat down, waiting for me to speak first. I rolled my eyes playfully, taking a bite of my carrot.
“Go on, I know you want to ask..”
“Holy SHIT, Anna. THAT’s Mark? He’s fucking hot!” Callie gushed, looking around to make sure the man in question wasn’t around. Bailey scoffed and nudged Callie.
“Torres!”
I laughed at Bailey’s exclamation.
“No, she’s right Miranda. He’s ridiculously hot. But he’s also the biggest asshole on the planet,” I shrugged, taking a sip of my coke.
“Mind if we ask what happened? All we know is that you came to Seattle after breaking up with your ex. There’s definitely more to that if he’s back here begging for you to take him back.” Callie said, smiling sympathetically. I let out a deep breath and allowed myself to think back to the good old days.
“What’s there to tell? He was the love of my life and we were happy. And then he decided to fuck my best friend, in turn hurting both me and HIS own best friend.”
Both women stayed silent, knowing that there was more to come.
“Two years ago Mark and I were the couple that everyone was jealous of. The country’s most well renowned plastic surgeon and cardio thoracic surgeon, tackling New York together. Mark, Derek, Addison and I were truly the best of friends. Addy and I grew up together and when we met Mark and Derek in college the four of us were inseparable. Derek and Addison got married after we all got our PhD’s and Mark and I were over the moon for them.
“A few months after the wedding, I found out I was pregnant. And after seeing how happy Mark was at Derek’s wedding I assumed he’d be just as happy about the baby. I mean, we spoke about our future all the time but I guess it was just all talk to Mark. The second I mentioned I was pregnant, he changed. He started staying late at Cornell, taking on case after case. It was like he was never home. And I didn’t question it, I just assumed he was busy, maybe even working hard to save up for the baby. But one rainy night, Derek and I worked a late together and he offered to drive me back home when we finished up. Since’s Derek and Addison’s place was close by, we walked there so Derek could grab his car from the garage. The second we walked in to the house, we both knew something was up. The sight of a familiar leather jacket on the ground next to a pair of haphazardly tossed heels made my stomach drop. Derek and I shared a glance, both of our hearts breaking simultaneously.
“Derek walked up the steps to his bedroom while I did my best to keep myself from hyperventilating. The second I heard Addison’s gasp and Mark’s voice calling out for Derek, my heart shattered into a million pieces. Derek flew back down the stairs, eyes watery. Our gaze locked and he grabbed his keys and raincoat, pulling me by my hand, doing his best to drag me out of the house but not before a familiar silloutte stood at the top of the stairs.
“Annalise…”
Mark’s voice cracked with shame and my tears finally spilled over. That was the last time Mark and I saw each other. Derek and I immediately went back to the hospital where we spent the night consoling each other in silence. We were shocked. Sick to our stomaches. Devastated. Jolie was born 7 months after that and it’s just been the three of us ever since. I officially made Derek Jolie’s God-Father and we’ve been happy. Mark tried to reach out multiple times but I packed up and left Seattle shortly there after. Changed my number and just lived my life for my little girl.
So watching Derek sucker punch Mark truly made my day. I even got myself a cookie to celebrate,” I took a bite of the cookie in hand and smiled at the women infront of me.
They both looked disheartened and yet happy to have gotten the full story.
“Thank you for telling us Anna. If you need anything at all, we’ve got your back,” Callie said, smiling and placing a hand over mine. Miranda nodded.
“Absolutely. I’ll kick that little shit in the balls if he ever attempts to come near you if I have to,” I laughed and smiled back at them, happy to have friends like them.
Hours passed and I was staring at the OR grease-board while chewing on a twizzler before hearing two familiar voices off to my left.
“Welcome aboard Doctor Sloan, Seattle Grace is proud to have you,”
I turned to see Chief Webber shaking hands with Mark. My mouth dropped open, Derek standing a few feet behind me with the same look on his face. I felt like a fish out of water, my heart racing. Suprise, sadness, fear and rage bubbled inside me and before I knew it, I felt myself explode.
“What the fuck Chief!”
Please let me know if you’re interested in a part two. Do you think Annalise should forgive Mark down the line, or should a new love interest join in on all the fun?

LOOK AT ME! alex karev x fem!reader
SUMMARY: in which you struggle after the loss of a patient, and alex is there to calm you down
WARNINGS: panic attack, grief, mentions of death
WORD COUNT: 0.8k +
The moment you heard the machine flatline, you swore you felt your heart in your throat. You also felt the sweat dripping down your brow as you immediately shook your head, locking your hands and starting compressions on the patients chest. You couldn’t lose her, you just couldn’t. She had four kids, for God’s sake. No matter how many times you pressed against her chest, she just wasn’t coming back.
“No,” You whispered, warm tears threatening to spool from your eyelids. “C’mon,” you breathed.
Dr. Bailey came up behind you, a similar look of grief in her eyes as she gently grasped your shoulder, attempting to pull you away. “Dr. L/N,”
“C’mon!” You yelled out with a shaky, broken voice.
“Dr. L/N,” Miranda tried again, a little more forcefully this time, but you just didn’t stop. The rest of the surgeons in the OR stayed silent, sharing looks, none of them wanting to interfere with your clear distress. “Dr. L/N, she’s gone.”
You let out a pained sob and your body suddenly went limp. Dr. Bailey stepped in front of you, pulling your hands away from the patient as you were positioned next to Dr. Shepherd. He rested a hand on your shoulder whilst you fixated your eyes on Miranda, inhaling as she looked up at the clock.
“Time of death: 21:04.”
Dr. Bailey’s words rattled through you so fast, that you felt yourself struggling to breath. “No, no, no,” The heat began to spread through your body, it felt like the walls were closing in, like you you were going to explode. You had to get out of there.
Ripping off your scrub cap, you burst through the OR doors, running out into the hall and collapsing against the wall. “No,” you whispered once more, clutching your chest with both of your hands, trying your best to steady your breathing. All you could hear was the screeching sound of the machine filling your ears, and the hospital corridor around you was now a blur.
“Oh my god, Y/N.” You ever so slightly managed to hear the familiar voice of your boyfriend calling out your name, as he knelt down beside you, concern spread all across his face.
“Y/N, babe,” Alex watched as you sat slumped against the wall, your hands pressed to your chest and you heaved. He extended out his arms, one tightly gripping your shoulder, and the other cupping your cheek at an attempt to reassure you. “Y/N.” He repeated, keeping his tone soft not to stress you further. “Y/N, I need you to look at me, please. Can you do that?”
When your struggles for breath got faster, Alex quickly started to panic, “Y/N, look at me!” He sternly said, shaking you slightly and pulling you harshly back into reality. He watched as your eyelids flickered open, as your rapid breaths calmed down when you looked at him. There you were. You never told him what happened - you couldn’t. Nor did you need to, the look in your eyes told him all he needed to know.
You studied his face. Alex seemed sad. For the patient and her family, but more so for you. He knew that you were blaming yourself, but it wasn’t your fault. And he needed you to know that. He pulled you in for a hug, allowing you to sob into his shoulder the second he wrapped his arms around you. You felt his hands rub soft circles on your back, whilst he pressed gentle kisses to your temple. “Shh, it’s okay. I’m here. Need you to calm down for me.”
“It’s all my fault.” You croaked out between sobs as you heavy breaths finally slowed down.
“Hey,” Alex scolded, pulling away from the embrace. He cupped your cheeks with both his hands, pulling your chin up to ensure you were looking at him. “Don’t say that, don’t you ever say that.” His tone was stern yet sincere, “There was nothing else you could’ve done. She was sick, she’d been sick for a long time. It was not your fault, Y/N. Okay?”
“Okay,” you whispered under your breath, but loud enough that he could still hear you, “Okay.”
Alex continued to hold you as you calmed down, it felt as though the the whole world was crumbling away from underneath you both. As the two of you sat there against the wall, thoughts began to swirl around your head again, thoughts of what was going to happen next. “Oh god,” you whimpered, sitting up slightly as your eyes filled once more, “I have to tell her husband.”
Alex tightened his grip on you. He’s just calmed you down, if you got stressed out again you’d only hurt yourself. “No.” He was quick to shake his head, “No, you don’t. Bailey can do it. You need to stay here with me and calm down or you’ll make yourself sick.”

Baby on the brain(Derek Shepherd)
Request: @emalynvtgtgfhvgg can you do a Derek Shepherd x YN? Where she’s at work and throws up Bailey runs a test and she’s pregnant plssssss
Paring: Derek Shepherd x reader x Miranda Bailey
Greys MasterList
“we could get Ben to cook some steaks on the grill” I said scrubbing my hands with Bailey next to me. The two of us were trying to plan a get-together with Ben and Derek.
“we could do that, but I think we should pick the movie this time” Bailey said shaking her head. I chuckled remembering the last time we had a movie night and Ben bright the movie Annabelle, me nor Bailey had a fun night. We spent half the night hiding in our husbands arm.
Alex came in next and started to scrub his hands. “What are we talking about?” he asked genuinely curious. I looked over to my best friend and smiled as I tide my checkered scrub cap on my head.
“talking about Ben and Derek terrorizing us with Annabelle”
“mosty we're planning a date... Not that's any of your business” Bailey scoffed but gave him a smile so he knew she was joking. Alex chuckled as he continued to scrub in.
As the two continued to talk I felt my stomach start to turn and the smell of the water running made me sick. I sighed and gripped the edges of the scrubbing sink.
“N/n? You okay?” Bailey placed her hand on my shoulder a rubbed it.
“y/n?” Alex asked.
“I think I'm gonna Hurl” I mumbled holding my hand near my mouth while also trying to steady my breathing. “Yep, definitely gonna hurl”
I sprinted out of the scrubbing room and into the closet bathroom. I ran through the bathroom door and ripped the biggest stall open making it fly backwards and banging up against the one next door.
The noise stung my ears but I was glad it was masking the nauseating sounds of me emptying my sorry excuse of a stomach.
“you wait here” I hear a muffled Bailey tell Alex.
“Y/n are you okay?” Bailey asked from behind as she held my hair back. I let out a breath and rested my damp forehead on my arm. I let out a cough as Bailey backed up so a could set down away from the toilet. I pressed my back up against the cold metal stall as she rubbed my back.
“I'm okay, I'm okay” I whispered as I pulled my scrub cap off my head. Bailey's brown eyes stared at me with concern. She then looked at me up and down as the gears in her head turned.
“what?” I asked.
“could you be pregnant?” she asked. I staired at her for a brief second then burst out laughing which made Alex knock.
“everything okay in there?” he yelled from the other side of the door. We ignored him and Bailey studied my expression with shock and confusion.
“I can't get pregnant” I mumbled. Bailey wrinkled her eye browse with a sad experience. “who said you can't get pregnant?”
I sighed as stood up from the cold floor then hopped onto the counter that was next to the sink. “I was about 16 when they said I couldn't get pregnant...”
Bailey crossed her arms and gave my a look with nothing but sympathy. “dose Derek know?”
I nodded sadly. “we still talk about building a family. We want kids... I think we talk about it a lot to cope with it all”
Bailey sighed but had a spark in her eyes that held nothing but hope. “ya know... Your showing sings, your nauseous, your brests are bigger... Your moody... More than usual. When was your last cycle?”
I looked up and counted the days. The more I counted and did the math, the faster my heart fluttered. I hadn't had my period this month but I thought it was due to stress. I looked at Bailey and covered my mouth.
“I can't be” Bailey smiled and shrugged. “only one way to find out”
Bailey walked over the entrance of the bathroom and opened the door. Alex tumbled forward but cought himself on the door frame. I giggled as Bailey shot him a scowl.
“Karev go get a pregnancy test” Bailey told him. His eyes bugged out then he looked over to me with a big smile.
“Pronto Karev, and don't let anyone see ya either!” Bailey said. Alex quickly dashed out of the bathroom and went on his mission. He came back ten minutes late and handed me a cup.
“okay pee in this” he said handing me the cup. I wasn't phased by his choice of words but Bailey rolled her eyes. “classy Karev, real classy”
Did my business and handed the cup to Alex with the cap on. He held it with a digusted expression. I honestly don't blame him, dispite us being as close as siblings I wouldn't want to hold a cup of his pee.
“I think we're waisting our time” I sighed.
Alex shrugged. “I don't know, it looks like pregnancy pee to me”
Me and Bailey scoffed. “Karev get it the lab!” Bailey said pointing to the door. Alex busted out laughing and left the bathroom.
~~~~~~~~(.......)~~~~~~~~
“Hey, beautiful” Derek smiled coming up to me in the hallway. I smiled as he put his arm on my shoulder. “hey”
I dropped off my patients chart at the nurse's station then filled out a form to release a patient that was on mine and Owen's service. Derek was leaning on the nurse's station telling me about his surgery when Bailey came up to us with a big smile.
“I need to talk to you” she said pointing to me then turn to Derek. “both of you... If you want” she said looking at me.
I crossed my arms and looked at her trying to put the pieces together on her mood. “depends”
She smiled at me and nodded. I unfold my arms in disbelief. “really?” I smiled as Derek looked between us confused.
She nodded and hugged me. “Wait what are you two up to?” Derek asked. Bailey smiled and told us to come to the Attendings' room.
Once we we're alone a spilled the good news. “I'm pregnant” Derek didn't skip a beat and immediately wrapped his arms around me as nothing but pure happiness plastered on his face.
“I'm so happy” he said burying his face in my neck as happy tears pricked his eyes.
“congrats mama Shepherd” Bailey smiled as I left Derek's arms and hugged her tight. “your the God mother ya known” she smiled proudly and nodded.
“I'm so happy for you guys” she said hugging Derek.
“me too” I said smiling at Derek.
AN: And now we get to Jo's pregnancy with Karev baby #3! Rest assured I've already written and edited this entire story so updates will be weekly and punctual.
…………………………………………………………………
Alex was trying to concentrate. He had one shot at this and prepared himself as he watched the timer countdown. He only had a few seconds to do this so he knew he had to be perfect. He watched as the timer counted down, 3, 2, 1, go. He let the first pendulum swing then the second, but then he fumbled the third one. Two of the pendulums crashed together and he lost the game. Alex tried again, but with the same results, and groaned at his failures.
This stupid game was getting the better of him. He was a surgeon, he was supposed to have quick fingers and know how to keep time. The fifteen-year-old nonbinary teen, Luca, in the bed next to him, giggled as Alex grumbled and tried again. This time he got all the swinging in time, and the fourth one went before the two collided and he lost again. Luca snorted but had the decency to cover their mouth.
Alex grunted as he handed the phone back to Luca. “Since when does Tic Tok have games anyway? I thought it was just like a dancing-storytelling version of Vine?” Alex asked as he crossed his arms.
“Oh please like you don't have a TikTok Dr. Alex,” Lucas said as they shook their head. “And it's a multi-purpose social media app. I even get news on here.”
“Whatever,” Alex said as he waved it off. “Can I take a look at your scar now?”
“Yeah,” Luca said, rolling up their gown as Alex saw the scar on their side.
The incision was healing nicely after the repair for blunt force trauma to their abdomen nearly ripped apart their liver. Although they had to take the right lobe out, the left lobe of the liver was recovering nicely and would regenerate the right lobe soon enough. Luca was healing up nicely, inside and out and they had gotten their strength and humor back. Link had worked with him in surgery as they reset the teen’s leg and grabbed the Doppler to check the blood flow, seeing that all was good.
“Well, I think we're on track to discharge you tomorrow and you can go home,” Alex said with a smile.
“Really?” Luca asked, perking up as they smiled.
“Yup, you should get out of here, it’s been long enough,” Alex said as he knew how much Luca wanted to go home and hated being away from friends and their mom.
They had been airlifted here from Gold Bar after they were in a car crash with their father who was recovering in the general ward. Their mom worked and couldn’t make it in every day and their friends could only visit once. Alex had heard Owen's plan to discharge their father tomorrow and figured he’d see if Luca could go home as well.
Alex put the Doppler away as Luca pulled up tik tok on their phone again. “Wanna play again before you go and see if you can beat it?”
Before Alex could say yes, the door swung open and one of the interns, Yasuda ran in. Alex turned, annoyed at how she had rushed in, but when he saw the look on her face he paused. It was a look of worry that meant someone he loved was hurt and his heart stopped.
“Dr Karev, it's your wife.”
…………………………………………………………………
Alex raced down the hallway like an intern running after an incoming trauma. As soon as Yasuda said that Jo had fainted, he ran off to find her. He was desperate to get to his wife. He had to see if she and their baby were alright. He knew realistically that they would be, but he had to see it for himself.
He ran up to the maternity ward first, before running down to the ORs, knowing that was where they were coming from. He eventually found them as Carina was pushing Jo in a wheelchair with one of the newer OB interns beside her. Alex quickly raced up to them and they paused for a second as he finally reached her. Despite seeing her, there was still a tightness in his chest as he knelt in front of her. Jo gave him a tired smile, looking up from where she was holding her 26 week pregnant bump and an ice pack against her forehead.
“I'm okay,” Jo promised, although she looked up at him with weary eyes.
“Like hell you are,” Alex said, cupping her cheek with his hand and holding her bump with his other hand. “What happened? How did you hit your head? Are you dizzy? Did you throw up?”
“Hey,” Jo said, getting him to focus on her again as she looked into his eyes. “I'm fine. The baby’s fine, I promise.”
Sill, Alex looked up at Carina who gave him a reassuring smile. “Rest assured Dr. Karev, Jo and your baby are alright. She was faint from standing for a long uterine abrasion surgery and she only hit her head on a tray as she was trying to get up on her own. Apart from a small bump on her head, she is fine.”
Alex nodded as Jo let him move the ice pack so he could see the small red mark on her hairline. “You're okay?”
“I’m okay,” Jo assured him with a smile, as much as she said she hated everyone fussing over her, she secretly loved to be taken care of by him, especially while pregnant.
“I thought we said no fainting in ORs this time around,” Alex said with a slight smile despite his lingering worry.
“I know,” Jo looked up at him with a matching small smile, and he could see fatigue in her eyes.
“Why don’t you take the rest of the day off and go home to rest,” Alex insisted as he took over punishing her wheelchair as they continued down the hallways again.
“It’s already approved,” Carina agreed with a nod.
“No,” Jo insisted as she looked up at them.
Alex and Carina exchanged a look as both of them paused for a second before they both opened their mouths to protest. However, Jo quickly cut them off.
“I’m fine, I promise and I’ll take it easy for the rest of the day,” Jo said as she looked at them insistently. “I'll take a break and go get something to eat and drink. I'll go visit the girls and then I'll do paperwork, nothing too strenuous.”
“Josephine, I don't think this is very wise,” Carina said, her eyebrows knitted together as she placed a hand on Jo’s shoulder. “And as your doctor and your superior, I am urging you to go home.”
“I don't want to go home and be bored for the next four hours until Alex and the girls get there,” Jo lamented with a frown.
“Jo please just take it easy, for your sake and the baby's sake!” Alex pleaded with her, getting mad that she would rather stress herself out than relax at home.
“The baby and I are fine!” Jo said as she went to get up, despite both of their protests as they tried to keep her seated and she managed to stand up strong. “I am fine.”
Jo walked away from them and Alex let out a deep sigh. He pinched his nose as Carina just shook her head and put her hand on her hips. They never understood why she did this. He knew she hated being lonely, and her anxiety rose especially while pregnant, but this was beyond that.
“I’ll at least keep an eye on her and make sure she does desk work, checking in patients, calls, and chart work, but no work on any active labors or C-sections,” Carina said as she shrugged, they both knew by now that Jo would still try and deliver babies. It was what she lived for.
“I'll stay with her for now and if she gets faint again, I'll take her home,” Alex nodded as Carina agreed with their plan.
Carina went back down the hall to the OR to finish the surgery while Alex looked back to Jo. She was walking away and he had to jog to catch up with her. When he did, he put a hand on her back as he fell in step with her. Jo smiled at him, as she knew she had won.
They both took a lunch and went down to the cafeteria. They got something to eat and drink as she rested with her feet up on an extra chair. He watched her closely, but she seemed alright and was even eager to chase the girls around. They pulled them out of daycare for a bit as they got some cuddles and hung out in Alex’s office before they took them back.
After they said goodbye to the girls, they walked back up to the maternity ward. Carina was waiting for her and Jo sat down in a chair at the nurse's station. Carina presented her with a stack of charts to work on and Jo scowled at the tower of paperwork she had.
“You could always just go home?” Alex said, looking down at her as he leaned on the counter.
“No, I’m good,” Jo said as she plastered on a smile, opened the first file, and logged into the computer
“Alright,” Alex as he stood there a little longer, wishing for an excuse to stay.
Jo glanced over at him with a light glare, telling him to go. His phone dinged and Alex pulled it out as he sighed. He was being paged to the ER for a consult but looked back at his pregnant wife.
“Go, I'll be fine,” Jo said again with a light smile.
He almost believed her, but there was something inside of him that told him he needed to worry about her. Still, he looked down at the page and knew that he had to go. He leaned down and kissed her cheek. Jo smiled before she reached up to grasp his chin as she turned to kiss his lips.
“Promise me, you’ll page me if you even feel the slightest bit sick,” Alex insisted as he watched her.
“I promise,” Jo said and he knew she was resisting the urge to roll her eyes. “But don't worry I'm in good hands.”
Jo looked back at the nurses who all smiled back at her and nodded, reassuring him. If he couldn’t look after her, the nurses were the second best thing.
“Alright, I'll see you later,” Alex said as he reluctantly turned around and walked away.
…………………………………………………………………
Later that afternoon Alex walked back to the Maternity ward and saw Jo standing at the nurse's station. He couldn't shake the feeling of worry he had for her and decided to take an extra break to go check on her. Although he had heard from the nurses that she was fine and grumbling about the paperwork.
When he spotted her, Jo was speaking to a few of the new interns and the nurses. Alex smiled as he approached her. At 26 weeks pregnant, Jo had a sizable bump under her black scrub shirt, and he loved admiring it. She had both of her hands on her back, rubbing in small circles and he reached out to rub her back for her. As Alex put his hand on her back, Jo looked up at him with hazy eyes and leaned into him as she began to waver.
“Jo, Jo,” Alex said as her eyes fluttered shut and he quickly wrapped his arms around her and held her.
“I'm fine, I didn’t pass out,” Jo said, putting a hand on her head as she took a few deep breaths. “I'm just a little light headed.”
“Get me a chair!” Alex yelled at them as they all jumped into action.
The intern quickly turned and scrambled around as they tried to grab one of the chairs that were connected to a line of other chairs from the waiting room. The nurses were smarter and quickly gave him the rolling chair from behind the desk and helped him ease Jo into it.
Alex pulled out his stethoscope and gave her a once-over. Her heart sounded fine, her lungs sounded good too. But as he put his hand on her forehead, she felt hot.
“Is there anything I can get you, Dr. Karev?” One of the interns asked.
“No, now scram,” Alex said, knowing Jo didn’t like a crowd fussing over her and they all quickly left them alone.
“I hate this,” Jo said, rubbing her forehead.
“I know,” Alex gave her a sad smile as he knelt down in front of her and reached up to cup her cheek. “What's going on Jo?”
“I'm not feeling so good,” Jo admitted with a sigh. “I think I'm coming down with a cold or something.”
“Why didn’t you tell me or Carina?”
“I didn't want you to worry, I'm sorry,” Jo said as she frowned and tears sprung in her eyes.
“I’m always going to worry about you, but if I know what's going on then I can help you,” Alex said as he rubbed her cheek with his thumb.
“I know,” Jo cried as she covered her face with her hand. “It just makes me feel like I can't do my job or anything and I didn’t want to be admitted like last time where everyone was there and they all found out I was pregnant. It was fun to celebrate it, but I hated being fussed over.”
“I know you hate it, but you need to be fussed over because you’re not feeling well. You're clearly running a fever and I know you're tired. And don't pretend that you don't have a runny nose, because I know you have tissues stuffed in your pockets.”
“My throat hurts too,” Jo admitted as her voice started to sound a little horse.
“I’m sorry, Jo,” Alex said with a sigh as he frowned.
Now that she was in the second trimester her pregnancy symptoms had eased up. However it came with new symptoms, she still had insomnia and she struggled to sleep. This often left her tired and in need of a daily nap alongside their toddlers. She was also dealing with heartburn and round ligament pain. Now that she was sick he couldn’t imagine how much worse she felt.
“Come on, let's go home,” Alex said, putting his arm around her as he helped her up.
“Okay,” Jo said as for once she didn't protest and leaned into him.
“Thank you,” Alex said as he reached around to hold her bump and they walked together towards the resident’s lounge.
“Will you make me mac and cheese for dinner?” Jo asked, looking up at him with pleading eyes.
“Of course,” Alex agreed, despite how they’d had twice in the past week he knew the girls loved it just like their Mama.
“Thank you,” Jo said as she leaned in and kissed his cheek and he tried not to blush at her affection.
Jo did as she was told, for once, and went home. They let Carina and Hayes know they were leaving and Alex took a bit of work home with him. Then they went and got the girls from daycare and headed home. When they got there, her nose started running even more and she opened up the cough drops. He took her temperature and she was 100.9° F. Alex just raised an eyebrow at her as Jo ignored his eyes. She did stay home the next day and the day after that. After a few days in bed, Jo recovered from her cold. Then she was back to her usual self, even her pregnancy symptoms eased up, and Alex’s worry disappeared…
Until a week later.
going back to seattle will never be one of your plans. but, your mother had to pick seattle as one of the destinations for your so called family road trip.
to add more, you had to stay in town for a few days. it's not like you hate the city.
it's where you've met your soulmate. your person, alex.
but when you were on your last year residency, you had to leave. not only because of all the crisis that hit seattle grave mercy west that time, you were also offered a job at hopkins, your dream hospital. to start your fellowship.
fortunately, alex was also offered to start a fellowship there.
but, the plane crash happened.
he couldn't just leave the hospital. especially with what happened to arizona.
"you can't be for real y/n." he said following you onto your shared bedroom.
he proposed that morning and now, you're packing your stuff up.
"we said we'd stay!"
but, now you can't.
"is this about your family y/n? is that why you can't answer me? i swear if they're talking crap about me again i'll–"
"you want to know how they're treating me because of us?" stopping at by the doors.
"you know about this. alex i–"
"and yet you listen to them huh." scoffing at what you said.
"if you walk out of that door, we're done y/n."
after five years, you were back. you convinced yourself you were just visiting and checking the sights you never seen or had the chance to see when you were still living in the city.
you were on your hotel room when your four year old boy, lucas, who just came back from a walk with your parents suddenly threw up on the carpet.
"i don't feel good mama."
you called for an ambulance and of course it brought you to where you started your career as a doctor.
as your son was brought in the emergency room. one of your former colleague and a very close friend noticed you.
"y/n?"
"meredith!"
she walked towards you. "how are you? and you've got a kid!" she said hugging you.
"i'm fine, mer." you replied, hugging her back.
"are you staying long?"
"does alex—" she was interrupted when your son started to cry and vomit again.
you came back to his side and started to rub his back for comfort.
"no. he doesn't know i'm here." you replied shortly.
"just so you know he's the one on-call on peds today."
"and let's catch up after work." with that she hugged you again before going back to her patient.
while waiting for the doctor on-call to come down. you made the time to pray that it's arizona or another doctor will come down.
"where's the–" he stopped in the middle of the emergency room.
he certainly did not expect you to be somewhat in seattle. and of course, he did not expect for you to have a kid.
he saw the way you were talking to the child. promising something which made the kid smile. but shortly after, the kid reached for the basin and vomited again.
from that, he got out of his daze and walked towards the two of you.
"how are you feeling little champ?" he said standing on the bedside.
"i don't like it." he said turning himself towards you.
alex looked at you and asked you what happened. "he was fine before he went out with my parents. he said he ate something from the sea."
"from the sea huh." alex said examining your kid.
"i tried to ask which is it but he's really not in the mood to be specific." you said brushing his hair out of his face.
after alex looked at him more "he's already getting fluids and i already ordered some meds but i'd like to keep him overnight for observation."
you agreed. "y/n i–" he was interrupted when lucas started to call for you.
"i'll check up on him again later." he said before letting himself out of the emergency room.
after settling in and calling your parents. you had the chance to take a breather. walking in the halls with some of the staff recognizing you. you finally reached the cafeteria.
"can we talk?" alex's voice came from behind. you motioned for him to take the vacant seat in front of you.
"so...you've got a kid huh." he said starting the conversation.
"yeah. he's smart and funny..."
"i met him three years ago from a program we did back at boston. and instantly fell in love with him. can't believe that i'd be falling in love an infant though." both of you letting out a laugh.
"you know, i waited for you text or something." he spoke again.
"i waited over there too." you said smiling sadly at him.
"so you're the chief of peds surgery now huh." you said pointing at his coat. "yeah. robbins gave me the job, so she can do neonatal."
"are you staying?"
you stood up from the table before answering. "we're just visiting."
after that talk with alex, you went back to lucas' room. he's finally asleep after vomiting all afternoon.
"you can go back to the hotel and rest up." sitting at the end of the bed. "lucas' doctor, karev. isn't he that ex-boyfriend of yours?" your father asked as they were gathering their things.
"it's a good thing you listened to us cause you're doing way better than him, i mean have you seen him? hopkins is way better than this–"
"can we drop this conversation dad?" you said sighing as took as seat beside your child's bed.
"i'm just saying that you're doing way better than–" with your father not dropping the subject, it made you mad. all those years of torment of them hearing how great you are now just because you listened to them and left seattle.
"do you think i was fine after i left this hospital? i listened to everything the both of you said because i can't bear how you were treating me."
"the only good thing that happened to me over there is lucas! and don't think i didn't know what you said about me adopting him cause i–" you received a slap from your mother.
"how dare you speak to your father like that? we were only looking out for you and you adopting a kid you just saw at a program was–"
"out. i've heard enough." your mother protesting woke up lucas. "mama... where's grandma and grandpa going?"
"the-they're going home sweetie. we'll just visit them after we go home tomorrow okay?" rushing to his side so you could help him go back to sleep.
after your parents left, meredith was standing by the door. "are you okay? cause this is just my cup of tea y/n, i mean, mommy and daddy issues?"
laughing from what she said, you let her take a seat on the chair by bedside. "so you heard the whole thing."
"pretty much."
"well, hopkins was great. but you know, this place was my home, mer." sighing, and thinking that all of the things that happened today made you tired enough for days.
"i could hire you." she said nonchalantly. "are you serious?" you said in disbelief.
"you don't think i'm serious? i kinda own this place now."
"we could head down and sign the contract." looking at her, checking to see if she's really saying the truth.
"no. i–i can't." standing up and hushing your child as he started to turn again. "why? is it alex?"
"it's kinda stupid but yeah."
"what's stupid is the both of you are still in love with each other and you're not together."
"pretty sure he moved on mer. the minute i walked out on him. we were done." you said getting a cup of water and some apple slices which you presume was for your child.
"no. he still loves you."
"i left him after he proposed mer."
meredith stopped at what she was about, shocked at what she's hearing. "he proposed?"
"then i left him." you sternly added. "so that's why he always have this small box on his coat or pocket."
"what?"
"i think you weren't supposed to know that." she suddenly changed the topic about you and your program at hopkins and it turned to how you met your kid and how she loves her kids. just the both of you catching up.
the next day, meredith came back to check on the both of you for the third time. "are you sure you don't want to work back here, cause i told bailey and she's more than glad to have you back."
"mer–"
"we're moving here mama?" your kid said looking up from where he was playing with his toys.
"do you want to live here, sweetheart?" meredith asked him as she sat beside him.
"can we live near auntie mer?" lucas asked too excited. meredith looked at you with a smug grin on her face.
"bailey has an offer that tops hopkins." she said as she started to play with your kid again.
"fine. i'll talk to bailey, but i don't promise anything."
"i'll take it."
you didn't know how she convinced you to talk to bailey about your job here. but boy, meredith and bailey pulled out the big guns.
"look, i love the offer dr. bailey, but i just got here yesterday and–"
"we'll keep the position open for you dr. y/l/n, it would be really great to have you back with us." with that, you left the office wondering how you and lucas would be happier here.
to your surprise, alex was the one playing with your child.
"hey, where's aunt mer?" asking as you walked in. "she has a person to cure, mama." your kid said not looking up.
"your mama's back now, champ. i'm going now." alex said as he ruffled lucas' hair. "don't go! i love playing with you!"
"baby i'm sure dr. alex has some patients to cure too." your kid started to have tears forming on his eyes, but he tried his best not to let one tear out.
"how about we, uhh--" you can't find a pretty good excuse for lucas to feel better.
"hey how about this. you and you're mom are going home in a few hours, right?" alex asked and he nodded. "you play with your mama first, and i'll come back after curing my patients?" lucas looked at you for a signal and you smiled at him which he took and nodded at alex. "you promise uncle alex?"
alex was quite taken aback by the way he called him. the whole time the both of you were around, he always called him by 'dr. alex'
"yeah. i'll be quick."
you mouthed thank you at alex and went to your kid's side, starting to play with him.
"ma?"
"yes?" the both of you are now eating your lunch, well you're doing most of the eating.
"auntie mer said uncle alex is special to you." almost choking at what he said, you tried to hide the coughing. "she told you that?"
sipping water trying to compose yourself. "h-he is, sweetheart."
@optimst sent ? and got "i'm not crying"
"i'm not!" alex said, wiping at his eyes. the last time he had cried like this in front of izzy was when he had to say goodbye to ava, and that was years ago now. yeah, him and izzy were closer now but it was still embarrassing. all his life alex was told to be a man and toughen up, and this was the exact opposite of that. he took a few deep breaths and waited for his heart rate to go back to normal. he wouldn't say it aloud any time soon, but izzy sitting next to him helped him feel better too. "okay, okay, i'm done," he said, wiping at his cheeks to make sure he had stopped crying.
