beating my head against the walls in Latine
here's eight things that atp will have me immediately closing out of any fic, AleRudy edition:
1.
❌ "the los vaqueros"
ah yes the famed and feared las almas battalion of Mexican special forces. the the cowboys
✅ "los vaqueros"
✅ "the vaqueros"
2.
❌ "the los vaqueros base"
✅ "los vaqueros' base"
✅ "the vaqueros' base"
3.
❌ "corporal alejandro vargas and sergeant rodolfo parra/major rodolfo parra"
look, fuck the military as an institution and also fuck the devs for using American rank structure for members of the Mexican army but
it takes roughly 2 years in the army to advance to Corporal. the equivalent in the Mexican army is Cabo, and Google will not give me the requirements for it no matter how I ask
it takes 3-6 years to advance to Sergeant. From what I can tell, the Mexican equivalent is also Cabo (where Sargento Segundo is closer to Staff Sergeant)
it takes 10-12 years to advance to Major, the equivalent is Mayor (not the English word mayor like of a city, don't be like those white people)
it takes 22-24 years, a bachelor's degree, and officer school to become a Colonel and it takes 18-20 years and a whole mess of leadership courses nearly equivalent to a degree to become a Sergeant Major
put some goddamn respect on their names
✅ Colonel Alejandro Vargas and Sergeant Major Rodolfo Parra
✅ Coronel Alejandro Vargas and Sargento Primero Rodolfo Parra
4.
❌ Fuerza Especiales
❌ Fuerzas Especiale
this is just not understanding Spanish grammar
✅ Fuerzas Especiales ("Special Forces")
❎ Fuerza Especial ("special force")
5.
❌ Sin Nombre ("without name")
Alejandro literally corrects Soap on this one in the game
✅ El Sin Nombre ("The Nameless")
6.
❌ "Alejandro Vargas, leader of Mexican Special Forces"
the leader of Mexican Special Forces is the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional - the Secretary of Defense - and Fuerzas Especiales is composed of three brigades, 74 independent battalions (like Los Vaqueros), 36 amphibious special operations groups. Colonels command single brigades at most.
Alejandro is capable of leading Mexican Special Forces, but it would require him to retire from the field and get more of a desk job, with far more politics than I think he'd have patience for
✅ "Alejandro Vargas, leader of Los Vaqueros - a battalion of Fuerzas Especiales stationed in Las Almas"
7.
❎ "our ancestors, the Aztecs"
look, indigenous identity is weird sometimes and I don't know enough specifics about the culture around it in Mexico to have a solid opinion, but I'm also very fucking tired of people thinking the only indigenous groups in Mexico are the Nahua (Aztecs) and Maya. if they're on the Texas border and their families have always lived there, their heritage is most likely seven different Apache nations/language groups in a trench coat with some Spanish conquistador on the side. they're most likely not related to any famous indigenous chiefs or other figures, but it's very possible they can trace their Spanish ancestry back directly to nobility
for example, I am related to absolutely none well-known Tsalagi or Kwikipa people as far as I'm aware, but I am a direct descendant of the brother of King Ferdinand the Catholic, which also means I'm a direct descendant of the guy who started the Inquisition (and now I'm Jewish (and pro-Palestine for those who want to know) so take that, colonizer)
also while Bayardo is Mexicano, Alain is Cubano, please be respectful when talking about the actors or when in their instagram lives and just. don't make assumptions y'all
8.
❎ "Los Vaqueros" is a nickname from the people of Las Almas, the battalion's actual name that is on all the paperwork and dog tags is more likely numerical or describing their role/location - like "11th Battalion" or "The Borderline Battalion" or something like that. maybe even both, like "The 11th Border Battalion"

The Warriors: A Forgotten Tribute to the Lenape and the Fight Against Erasure
When you think about The Warriors, the immediate image is that of street gangs battling for survival in a gritty, neon-lit New York City. But beneath the surface of baseball bats and leather vests lies a fascinating connection often overlooked: the deep ties to Indigenous American culture—specifically, the Lenape people, the original inhabitants of what we now call New York City.
The Warriors themselves, with their tribal structure, distinct identity, and fierce loyalty, are more than just a fictional gang. They echo the history, culture, and ultimate betrayal of the Lenape, who called Manhattan (originally “Manahatta,” meaning “many hills”) and the surrounding boroughs home long before colonizers arrived. This isn’t just conjecture—there are deliberate, undeniable parallels between the film’s story and the legacy of Indigenous resistance, survival, and erasure.
The Tribes of New York City
In The Warriors, each gang represents a unique tribe, hailing from different parts of the city and maintaining their own identity. This mirrors the structure of the Lenape, who were divided into three main groups based on dialect and geography:
Munsee: The northernmost group, encompassing Manhattan and the Bronx.
Unami: The central group.
Unalachtigo: The southernmost group.
These groups formed the “original boroughs” long before modern-day New York. The Lenape weren’t just skilled survivalists; they were visionaries. They cultivated one of the first extensive trade networks among Indigenous Americans, trading goods like corn, beans, and squash—the “Three Sisters”—that sustained entire communities.
Their governance, which often elevated women as leaders, was progressive even compared to European settlers. And their culture, which prioritized collaboration and open exchange with neighbors, laid the foundations for what would become one of the world’s most interconnected cities.
From Community to Colonization
The Lenape were initially friendly and open to the Dutch and British colonizers, even allowing them to interact with their culture. Early European settlers were stunned by how “civilized” the Lenape were, a stark contrast to the stereotypes they’d carried across the Atlantic.
But this openness became their undoing. The colonizers tricked the Lenape into forfeiting their lands, assuming they’d remain neighbors. Instead, the Europeans unleashed waves of violence—massacres, displacement, and the eventual eradication of the Lenape from their homeland. By the 1830s, policies like the Indian Removal Act solidified the erasure, forcing survivors to reservations far from their ancestral lands.
The echoes of this history resonate throughout The Warriors. The summit meeting called by Cyrus, the charismatic leader of the Gramercy Riffs, feels eerily similar to the council meetings held by Indigenous tribes to solve disputes or form alliances. Even Cyrus herself, with her vision of uniting the gangs against a common oppressor, channels the spirit of leaders like Chief Tamanend, a Lenape elder who sought peace and collaboration.
Colonial Parallels in the Film
Cyrus’s assassination by a white gang member and the ensuing chaos mirrors the betrayal faced by Indigenous leaders who sought to unify their people only to be struck down by colonial forces. The marginalization of the Warriors by other gangs parallels how colonizers manipulated and divided Indigenous groups, pitting them against each other to maintain control.
Even the Warriors’ names carry weight. Cochise, for instance, shares her name with the famed Apache chief who resisted European colonization. The name, meaning “hardwood,” symbolizes resilience—a fitting trait for a character fighting for survival in a hostile world.
And then there’s Luther, the maniacal leader of the Rogues, whose unprovoked violence against the Warriors feels like a microcosm of colonial aggression. His cries for destruction and his invasion of their turf reflect the terror inflicted upon Indigenous people simply for existing in lands others sought to claim.
The Warriors as a Modern Indigenous Legacy
What makes The Warriors so powerful, even decades later, is its ability to bridge the ancient past with the struggles of modern marginalized communities. The Lenape may have been displaced, but their culture is embedded in New York City’s DNA. From the very name “Manhattan” to Broadway itself (originally Lenape land), their influence endures.
The Warriors’ fight for survival, their solidarity in the face of overwhelming odds, and their refusal to be erased all echo the resilience of the Lenape and Indigenous peoples across the Americas. Cyrus’s vision of unity, though tragically cut short, symbolizes the enduring spirit of collaboration and resistance.
No matter how much history tries to erase the Lenape, their legacy lives on—in the landmarks they named, the practices they pioneered, and yes, even in the cultural touchstones like The Warriors. Just as the Warriors’ chant—“Come out to play!”—lingers in pop culture, so too does the Lenape’s influence, quietly reminding us of a people who refused to be forgotten.
The fight isn’t over. The Lenape’s descendants live on, their stories waiting to be told. It’s up to us to ensure those stories aren’t just remembered but celebrated—because history, much like the Warriors themselves, is always fighting to survive.

MyBeauty Updated information (Enjoy the otters)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Buggie’s first name has been changed from Charlene to Siobhan (pronounced shiv-awn)
- Speaking of Buggie, her ethnicity has been changed a bit as well. She is now Apache and Irish on her dad’s side but she remains Arawakan Cuban on her mom’s side. When I get around to updating her design (along with the rest of MyBeauty) there may be tweaks to reflect that side of her heritage.
- Cole’s first name is now Niccolò, with Cole being his nickname.
- Instead of appearing in the fame era, I decided Chen will appear in Season 3 (which I am still drafting lol).
- ^ I won’t reveal it yet but if you’re aware of Chen’s role in Buggie’s story then you’ll know that there will be another character introduced in MyBeauty soon.
That’s about it for now 🤍

New Episode available wherever you listen! This is the fourth episode in the series over the Apache Indians in the American Southwest. This episode covers the immediate consequences of the “cutting of the tent” and the murder of Mangas Coloradas by the US Army. Cochise, betrayed and angered by the death of his family, friends, & father-in-law goes on the warpath and punishes any and all White Eyes (and Mexicans) that he encounters. This obviously leads to far-reaching consequences for both the Americans and the Apaches of the American Southwest.
This episode also covers the Mescalero Apache and the death of Manuelito which ultimately leads to the Mescalero’s surrender and their transportation to the ill-fated Bosque Redondo by Kit Carson. The Navajo, swashbuckling Graydon and his duel, the election of President Grant, Joh and Geronimo’s retribution against the famed Indian Killer Lieutenant Cushing, the Board of Indian Commissioners, and so much more play a vital role in the 10 years covered in this episode.
Ultimately, all of this leads to what becomes known as the horrendous Camp Grant Massacre in Arizona which involves an incredible (although quite flawed) American named Oury, the Mexican-American Vecinos led by the Elias Brothers, the O’odham (Papagos), and the leader of the White Mountain Apaches (who was also the once owner of Felix the kidnapped boy) named Eskiminzin.
The cover features an O’odham warrior as he descends on Apache wikiups in Araivapa Canyon during the Camp Grant Massacre during sunrise.

First Sergeant Moses Williams (October 10, 1845 - August 23, 1899) born in Carrollton, Louisiana, was probably the son of enslaved. In 1866, he enlisted in the 9th Cavalry, one of two newly authorized African American cavalry regiments. These regiments gained fame as the “Buffalo Soldiers” while serving on the Western frontier. He was illiterate like so many freedmen, and signed his enlistment papers with an “X,” but his signature proudly appears on his first reenlistment papers in 1871. While serving as a Buffalo Soldier, despite the arduous duties and long days in the field, he learned the reading, writing, and mathematics skills needed to become an Ordnance Sergeant.
The 9th Cavalry was raised in Louisiana and sent to West Texas in the summer of 1867. Sergeants were appointed from the ranks. He was promoted to First Sergeant of Company F. He was transferred to Company K to serve as First Sergeant. The 9th Cavalry served in west Texas until 1875, scattered out in a string of small posts protecting the mail and stage route between San Antonio and El Paso. The 9th Cavalry transferred to New Mexico, where he reenlisted and was reassigned as First Sergeant of Company I.
The 9th Cavalry was embroiled in the Victorio War and a sequel is known as Nana’s Raid. A detachment of 22 troopers, including him, caught up with Nana. A running battle ensued, ending with a determined stand by the Apaches. During the fight, he repeatedly led flanking attacks. He rallied the detachment and brought it back into the fight. When the outnumbered cavalry was forced to withdraw, he and his lieutenant stood up to draw the enemy’s fire enabling the unit to rescue three cut-off troopers. He was awarded a Medal of Honor for his conspicuous gallantry that day. He was probably the first African American Ordnance Sergeant. He retired after 32 years of service. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

The Grue-Crew is in full Drive-In Theater mode for this one.
High-quality versions of I Was a Teenage Werewolf, streaming or physical media, are not available, but there is a reason. Susan Hart, the actress and widow of AIP co-founder James Nicholson, owns the rights to eleven AIP films outright: It Conquered the World (1956) and its remake Zontar, The Thing from Venus (1966); Invasion of the Saucer Men (1957) and its remake The Eye Creatures (1965); I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957); I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957); The Amazing Colossal Man (1957); Terror from the Year 5000 (1958); Apache Woman (1955); The Oklahoma Woman (1956); and Naked Paradise (1957). She frequently negotiates rights for merchandise and theatrical showings, but physical media has not been updated for release in decades. You can, however, purchase a VHS tape of the movie.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by Chad, is The Wasp Woman (1959). Yes, they’re sticking with 1950s B-movies, but moving from AIP/Herman Cohen on to Film Group/Roger Corman!
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans: leave them a message or leave a comment on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel, the site, or email the Decades of Horror: The Classic Era podcast hosts at [email protected]
To each of you from each of them, “Thank you so much for watching and listening!”

Chief Baishan, circa 1846
Baishan, son of the famed Chief Fuerte, also known as Soldato Fiero, was a most respected war leader among the Tchihende bands along almost three decades from the beginning of 1830s, and the principal chief the Warm Springs local group of the Tchihende (Mimbreño) Apaches after Fuerte's death in 1837 near Janos; he was also the second principal chief of the whole Tchihende Apaches after his long-time companion (and possibly brother-in-law) Mangas Coloradas, chief of the Coppermine local group of the same Tchihende Apaches. His name was translated by the Mexicans as Cuchillo or Cuchillo Negro, because of the Apache practice of blackening their weapons to make them less conspicuous. About 1835, Fuerte, chief of the Warmspring Mimbreño Apache, was killed near Santa Rita del Cobre by Mexican troops belonging to the garrison of Janos, but Juan José Compa, the old leader of the Coppermine Mimbreño Apaches who was friendly to the Mexicans, rejected Baishan's request of help to assault and destroy Santa Rita; Baishan led a bloody raid to Sonora. After Juan José Compa too was killed for bounty money in 1837 in the massacre at Santa Rita del Cobre, Baishan joined Mangas Coloradas in his revenge, the two chiefs operating a series of retaliatory raids against the Mexicans, killing and destroying all around the mining town and placing Santa Rita under siege, finally attacking the column of fleeing Mexicans and slaughtering a large number. In he was falsely claimed to have been killed by Mexican troops in the Oputo Mountains. In 1847, to revenge the Galeana massacre, Baishan called a council with the Tchihende (Mimbreño), Tsokanende (Chiricahua) and Ndendahe (Mogollon) chiefs. Late in that autumn he, Mangas Coloradas, and, probably, the Tsokanende leaders Miguel Narbona, Tapilà and Yrigollen went to raid Chihuahua with 200 warriors, occupying Ramos, near Janos, and killing most of the inhabitants. In 1848 Mangas Coloradas and Baishan with their Mimbreños, and Miguel Narbona and Yrigollen with their Chiricahuas, attacked Sonora, and on February 18 they burned Chinapa, killing or capturing many Mexicans. Baishan's name is mentioned in military and civilian records of treaties and other dealings with Apaches during the early years of U.S. jurisdiction over the New Mexico Territory. In 1851 the settlement at Santa Rita del Cobre of the U.S. delegation (with General J.R. Bartlett) in the Mexican-American Border Commission and the reopening of the Santa Rita del Cobre copper mines effected a meeting with the Anglo-American newcomers; and Baishan, just as Mangas Coloradas, Delgadito, Ponce, Coleto Amarillo and all the most important Tchihende and Ndendahe chiefs, had to face new problems. In June 1851 Mangas Coloradas, with Delgadito, Ponce and Coleto Amarillo, went to Santa Rita del Cobre to meet General Bartlett. The discussions went on until the Apaches no longer felt themselves disappointed and betrayed by the newcomers. Baishan, too, had to face some problems in connection with some young Mexican boys who had been adopted into his band. In 1853, along with Ponce, Delgadito and Victorio, he signed a treaty in Fort Webster with Indian agent Edward H. Wingfield, who had been sent by the governor of the New Mexico Territory, William Carr Lane.

Blackwater Booming
SETTLERS ARRIVING DAILY. TOWN FOUNDED BY JOSIAH BLACKWATER SEES RAPID GROWTH.
Every day, livery worker Lance Hopkins greets new arrivals to Blackwater as their tired horses and mules who have seen many miles of travel require new shoes and salves for cuts and scrapes. He can barely keep the forge tended and lit for all work coming in each day, telling that by all accounts he has not had a day of rest or solitude in a good eight months.
Once a sleepy port town founded by fabled adventurer Josiah Blackwater, it is now hailed as a "Gateway to the West" as miles of track have been laid through the area, heading west to the Pacific Coast. Workers arrive to join lumber and mining outfits. Stocks are traded.
Investors are staking claims to the areas and surrounds, eager to build housing settlements. It is true - everything is up-to-date in Blackwater. Each day, more dispatches arrive from the East saying, "We're coming to Blackwater! She's a great gal, that. She's a huckleberry above most people's persimmons. Show me another like her any whar, and I am thar directly!", or words to that effect.

Mongrel Gang Terrorizing Area
SKINNER BROTHERS. MURDER, CATTLE RUSTLING, SAFE BLOWING.
A telegraph from Sheriff Oswald Dunbar announced that a family traveling through Tall Trees has been found slain - reportedly by the notorious Skinner Brothers. The mother was found strangled and the children hanging from trees. The father was found dead nearby, tortured in a gruesome and savage way. The Skinner Brothers are a rag tag bunch of outcasts and criminals, known for brutal ways of dismembering and thieving.
They are believed to be a group of half-breeds, mixed race outcasts, outlaw Irishmen, a Chinaman, escaped killers and rapers. They are as keen with an Apache bow as they are with a Mexican knife. Authorities have had a difficult time tracking the gang. They use cunning to cover their tracks and rarely stay in one place for very long. They are believed to have killed more innocents than the Otis Miller Boys, Butcher Brothers, and the Tallulah Jetty Gang combined.

Evelyn Miller Resigns
SEDUCED BY FAME. AUTHOR TROUBLED BY HYPOCRISY.
Social Theorist and philosopher Evelyn Miller has resigned his post at Princeton after increased turmoil regarding his theories on mankind and the savage. Announcing that he had become "troubled at his own remorseless hypocrisy" the once regaled professor and theorist on what separates the white man from that of the lowly savage left the University in haste, and is reported to have retreated to the wilderness to write a book about becoming one with it.
Once a fixture at society events in several states, he has long been accused by some as being seduced by fame, with a penchant for entertaining aristocrats in salons with his theories of the rights of man, nature, and the urges of savages. His publisher reports that they have not heard from Mr. Miller in quite some time and are not aware if he is authoring a follow up work to his bestselling books.

Notorious Bad Man Alive
VAN DER LINDE REPORTEDLY SEEN IN TALL TREES. ON THE RUN SEVEN YEARS. GANG MEMBERS STILL AT LARGE.
A dispatch from Tall Trees reports a sighting of infamous outlaw Dutch van der Linde, who has been on a bloody run from the law for many years now. The notorious Dutch's Boys gang once plagued this state, but it was believed to have disbanded as long ago as 1899. Two of his henchmen - Hosea Matthews and Arthur Morgan - were both killed in separate raids by Pinkerton agents that same year.
Gang members Bill Williamson, Micah Bell, John Marston, and Charles Smith are still believed to be at large. A telegraph from Mexico reports that Javier Escuella is believed to reside in the mountain region there. The massive sum of money taken in the Blackwater Robbery by the gang has never been recovered. It was said to have been stashed in the town somewhere after the gang escaped.
Rumors that gang member Micah Bell returned to retrieve the haul still persist. The bloody days of the Van der Linde gang are the stuff of legend, appearing in pulp novels and even memorialized in popular song. Law enforcement have pledged to continue searching for Van der Linde, who has one of the largest bounties on his head for kill or capture.

Cholera Epidemic Rages
ARMADILLO UNDER QUARANTINE. SCORES DEAD.
A severe bout of cholera has broken out in Armadillo, a town still reeling from the brutal scarlet fever epidemic at the turn of the century that left a significant portion of the town dead. Reports indicate that as many as three in four residents are experiencing symptoms of cholera, including diarrhea and vomiting. Armadillo has been plagued with poor sanitation conditions for many years, adding to the spread of disease.
The town has had such troubles over the years with pandemics and dust storms that some refer to "The Armadillo Curse" and warn people to stay away.

Marvel of Delight
A "MOVING PICTURE SHOW". VIEWERS ASTOUNDED AND DELIGHTED.
Not since the invention of the steam engine has a contraption bestowed such delight as the Kinetograph, bringing moving pictures to the screen, delighting audiences around the world. At first an experiment which does for the eye what the phonograph does for the ear, it has quickly replaced the magic lantern as a source for amusement and entertainment. As an electric motor turns, it shines a light through a sprocketed film, projecting a moving image on a wall or screen.
Picture machine operators are in high demand and the contraptions cost quite a sum. While the first moving picture shows available were shorts of famous people, scenic views, news events and disasters, creators now are drawing pictures for each frame and then shooting them in succession, giving the appearance of movement. Popular examples are The Courtship Ritual and Beaumont the Burly, which have been selling out [in] theaters across the country.

Queer Pranks of Lightning
INJURIES FROM STRIKES.
The ferocious lightning storm the week before last caused several freak accidents. A bolt struck the house of Hector S. Wilton and, having traveled along an ornamental awning, shattered a window. Three people in the room were severely shocked and Mrs. Wilton was completely knocked senseless and required arousal with smelling salts. She has since reported difficulty walking as the electricity traveled through her and it has impaired her right leg.
She also suffers from rheumatism which has since been inflamed by the the electrical strike. Mr. Wilton safely fled the house but returned having noticed that a small section of the sitting room was set ablaze by the bolts of light.

Railroad Takeover Complete
SENATE ACTS ON CORNWALL RAIL.
The Senate has passed a bill authorizing the final consolidation of the remaining lines previously owned by the Cornwall Southern & Eastern Railways. In a measure largely supported by officials with the Pacific Union Railroad, all trains and routes once owned by Cornwall will be consolidated and continue service under the Pacific name.
As part of the takeover agreement, the Pacific Union Railroad has announced plans to lay track linking West Elizabeth and New Austin in the next few years, which should greatly benefit industries seeking to expand to areas of the country that previously had only been served by coach.

New Railroad Completed
A GRAND PROJECT OUR MANIFEST DESTINY
The final ties were laid and spikes driven through to complete the Central Union rail line stretching through New Hanover. Passengers will be able to bypass the Grizzlies, Rhodes, and Scarlett Meadows, drastically reducing travel time. Now with a direct line connecting Cornwall Kerosene and Tar and Saint Denis, freight and commuters will flow fast and freely.
The project came with complications, including controversy over missing workers' wages and a land dispute. Representatives from towns such as Van Horn Trading Post and Annesburg say the new line will result in the decline of their towns. Civic planners hail the railroad as a new dawning day in American progress and history.

The Art of Angling by Jeremy Gill
ROCK BASS.
In my extensive travels, I've logged many a mile on steamers, paddleboats, and nautical vessels of the queerest sort in search of trophy fish and, of course, wisdom. Many a sensible young angler who sees me as their hero will ask why fishing is dull, throbbing boredom punctuated by the wild explosion of excessive joy at a mere tap against the bait. That's because you're doing it wrong, you jackanapes, I tell them.
I've seldom gone more than ten minutes without a fish on the line, and when I do, such is my mastery over mind as well as matter that I enjoy the time. If you're looking for a fun fish - try going for Rock Bass in clear water on a sunny day. I once reeled in over 50 Rock Bass in an hour in Tall Trees. Try it and see! It's like life, only better!

Classic Film Review: John Ford takes the rep company, and no "stars," to Monument Valley for "Wagon Master" (1950)
“Wagon Master” was perhaps the truest test of the concept of “star director” of John Ford’s career. The iconic Irishman who came to America and made Westerns was finishing up his “cavalry trilogy (“Fort Apache,” “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” and “Rio Grande”) and was over a decade into the fame and studio leverage that “The Informer,” “Young Mr. Lincoln” and “Stagecoach” gave him. So he went back…

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange will make his first public statement since his release from prison in June, addressing the Council of Europe in Strasbourg next week.
Assange, 53, will testify to the legal and human rights committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on Tuesday, Wikileaks said in a statement.
The testimony will come after the parliamentary assembly publishes an investigation report into Assange’s five-year detention in Belmarsh prison. He previously spent seven years in the Ecuadorian embassy in London after claiming asylum.
In a statement, Wikileaks said the following:
“The report confirms that Assange qualifies as a political prisoner and calls on the UK conduct an independent review into whether he was exposed to inhuman or degrading treatment. The report discusses how governments employ both legal and extralegal measures to suppress dissent across borders, which poses significant threats to press freedom and human rights.”
Wikileaks said Mr. Assange was “on the mend,” having returned to his native Australia following his release. Meanwhile, his wife Stella said he needed time to “regain his freedom” and recover before speaking publicly at a “convenient time.”
A statement published on X’s website said he would attend the hearing in France “due to the exceptional nature of the invitation and to accept the support received from PACE and its delegates.”
Assange’s release in June followed an appearance before a judge in the US territory of the Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean, where he pleaded guilty to a single charge after the US dropped 17 other espionage charges against him.
Origins of Wikileaks
Julian Assange had been programming since the age of 16 and soon took up hacking under the nickname Mendax. He later formed the hacking group “International Subversives” with friends.
Assange was suspected of crimes such as infiltrating the databases of the Department of Defence and other US agencies. In 1991, an investigation was launched against the hacker on suspicion of breaking into the server of the Canadian telecommunications company Nortel Networks. The investigation lasted several years. In 1996, Julian Assange pleaded guilty to most of the 31 charges, but was sentenced only to a fine of about $1,300.
He later worked as a computer security consultant and changed several professions in the information technology field. In 1998, Assange co-founded Earthmen Technology, an Australian company developing network intrusion detection technologies.
In 2006, he and like-minded individuals created the WikiLeaks website, which made publicly available classified information obtained from anonymous sources. The first document was published in December 2006.
Mr. Assange gained international fame after a video of the shooting of a group of civilians in Baghdad by two US Apache helicopters in 2007 was posted on the WikiLeaks website in 2010. Two Reuters reporters were among the dead. The site later published thousands of files with classified information related to the US military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq and correspondence of US diplomats. The documents were distributed by the world’s leading media outlets.

Murder, Inc.
Author’s Note: While the following essay is goofy, a bit edgy, and focuses on the catharsis of violence, roleplaying games, for me, have always held a special place in my heart, something of a wake-up call compared to other games I’ve played. When you’ve played a tabletop roleplaying game, it’s hard to go back and play Chess with its bland player choices and resource management.
High school is the testing ground for our adult selves. It’s a time of hormones, acne, and going through the bureaucratic channels that make up public school education. For me, high school was all about gaming. I couldn't care less about the homework or sports. My high school experience was split between two high schools. I started high school in southern Colorado, where I played Mage Knight, MechWarrior, and Warhammer tabletop games at the local community center or high school or on a friend’s kitchen table. During the spring semester of my freshman year, I started attending school in Dulce, New Mexico. For the first few months, I had little to do to pass my time. To me, Dulce didn’t have much to offer.
Dulce is located on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation. It’s this little no-name place in northern New Mexico, where the Archuleta Mesa towers over a semi-arid mountain valley. The town is centered around the tribal buildings and businesses, which hug Highway 64 like plaque on arterial walls.
What I knew about Dulce came from two sources: Our neighbors, Tom and Pam, found their dog, Dulce, in Dulce, New Mexico. They always retold the story when we visited their B&B. I also remember hearing about Dulce concerning cattle mutilations in the late-1970s. The cattle mutilations were Dulce’s claim to fame. The History Channel aired a documentary on the mutilations when I was younger, with the narrator pronouncing the town’s name as “Dulch-eh, New Mexico.” Locals claimed that UFOs or the government were responsible for cattle being surgically sliced and diced. Conspiracy theorists blamed it on the Dulce Base, a sort of Area 51 military base rumored to be located under Archuleta Mesa.
We moved to Dulce after my parents decided to end their nightmarish take on June and Ward Cleaver. My father kept the house and our animals in southern Colorado. My mother took the three of us kids to Dulce, where she worked as an underpaid math teacher. The first months in Dulce were pretty damned boring. We still went to school in Pagosa Springs. This required that we commuted every morning to Chromo, Colorado to catch a school bus at 6:00 or 6:30. We were back home around 4:30 or 5:00, only to eat, watch some T.V., and finish whatever homework we had before going to bed. This continued until my mother decided it was time to enroll us in school in Dulce.
My siblings loved Dulce. My brother played sports and worked for the school. He later told my mom that playing sports in Dulce kept him from dropping out of high school. My sister played volleyball, hung out with friends, and watched Gilmore Girls every day at 3 p.m. She liked Dulce because it allowed her to be independent of my father, who could be a real hard ass.
For me, Dulce didn’t have the stuff I was used to. My classmates weren’t interested in old-school games. They played Xbox and PlayStation. I preferred dice and paper to television screens and controllers. I spent the better part of two months dinking around the small apartment my mom rented from the school district. I’d come home from school and watch T.V., eating copious amounts of Cheerios and Frosted Flakes with copious amounts of milk.
My taste in extracurricular activities worried my mother. She wasn’t exactly in a stable state of mind when we moved to Dulce. Her marriage of sixteen years was coming to a fiery end, complete with a major custody battle waged by two different states. She pulled extra hours to pay for an apartment, the increased appetite of her children, and a divorce lawyer. Dulce, New Mexico was not home for my mother, who’d grown up in rural North Dakota. North Dakota was the land of nice neighbors and friendly faces. It also happened to be a place where your dollar went further. To my mom, Dulce was the closest place she’d come to living and working in a warzone. Student suicides, crime, and poverty were a permanent staple of Dulce, or so she told us. She wanted to keep her kids away from all of that. She wanted to keep us away from the despair that many locals experienced when living in Dulce.
My mother’s anxieties led her to find outlets for my energy. These included going to afterschool programs or practicing Jiu Jitsu with Mr. B., our family friend, and a high school history teacher. However, these activities weren’t exactly what I was looking for. It took a series of fistfights with my little brother and bending the shit out of a metal door to our apartment before Mr. Boucher told me to meet up with a guy named Howe. He said Howe knew of something that’d interest me.
Howe worked for the Jicarilla Apache Department of Education (JADE) and wore clothes that fit the likes of a Mormon missionary rather than a day-in and day-out video tech guy. He filmed official tribal events and lectures for the tribal government. Howe occasionally worked on the odd bits of computer and film equipment that he stashed away in his JADE office. Howe’s office in the JADE building was about the same square footage as a small dorm room. The office was filled to maximum capacity with computers, video equipment, shelves, and milk crates holding Howe’s gaming books. There was no organizing principle behind the clutter of computers, cables, and cameras. It was like a squirrel’s stashed-out nut collection, with odd pieces stashed behind cabinets or stacked on top of bloating shelves. He lived on the Reservation as well; he was married to a Jicarilla Apache woman and had a son who went to school in Dulce. Howe also belonged to an earlier generation of roleplaying gamers. His generation started playing socially conservative games like Dungeons & Dragons, escalating their gaming fix to the hardcore, morally ambiguous stuff such as Shadowrun, Vampire the Requiem, Werewolf, and Paranoia.
It was through Howe’s influence that I discovered the seedy underworld of old-school roleplaying games. They were the kinds of games my father warned me about. My father saw Dungeons & Dragons as a portal of evil that could possess impressionable minds. I have no idea where he got this idea. I am sure this opinion was lifted from the pages of some Chick comic, where evil Dungeon Masters corrupt the souls of innocent children. I ignored my old man’s warnings and decided to jump into the world of roleplaying games. I had nothing else better to do. Little did I know, I was giving up every afternoon to commit murder, armed robbery, and aggravated assault while having fun with it all.
The first game I played with Howe and his coworker, Dylan, was a homebrew version of Shadowrun. The game was a blank spot in my mind. I’d never heard of it, nor had I heard about things like cyberpunks and corporatocracies that filled the game’s rulebook. I wasn’t used to the game mechanics either. I spent the better part of two and a half hours creating my character from scratch, rolling dice, answering questions, and choosing traits, quirks, flaws, etc. This was not due to some overly elaborate character creation system imposed by the game’s rulebook. Howe liked modifying his roleplaying games, adding bits here and there, and stealing from online forums and fan websites. The final character sheet consisted of intricate formulas, lists, and spreadsheets that Howe used in his role as Game Master, a sort of storyteller with god-like authority over the game world.
There are two types of Game Masters. There are those Game Masters who take pity on their players and offer a helping hand. Story, all-around fun, and leisurely gameplay are key to these Game Masters’ modus operandi. Then there are those Game Masters who view their players as mere mortal playthings, who are to be bound and beaten in every imaginable way. Howe belonged to the second Game Master archetype. Howe’s gamemastering technique took a page from the “Monkey’s Paw.” Be careful what you wish for. He had a way of making fate, gravity, and the dice come crashing down on our party. His thugs were better equipped. The police were always a step ahead of us. Bullets hurt and so did explosions. Being captured or arrested meant brutal interrogations bordering on torture. Every roll of the dice brought silent prayers and paranoia-induced mutterings. High rolls were met with hollering—all-around jubilation and high-fiving. Low rolls brought pale faces and globs of sweat and hope that our characters hadn’t stumbled into the starry beyond.
The first gaming session started simply: Dylan and I were hired to steal some corporate tech for a faceless, nameless client of the shadows. However, this heist led to an accidental kidnapping and death, which precipitated several gun battles with corporate guns and police organizations. In turn, this led to higher body counts and more enemies.
As we moved across the post-apocalyptic United States, the bodies piled up like cordwood. Thousands died. Dylan and I were like a two-man meat grinder. People came in one end and bullet-riddled or mutilated flesh came out the other. It gave me a certain high that couldn’t be matched anywhere else. I kept going to JADE to get my fix of mayhem and destruction. On days we couldn’t meet, I felt like I was going through withdrawals. I needed to roll dice and kick ass.
We’d snuffed out a group of homeless with a one-two combination of foam grenade with an incendiary chaser. The people frozen in the foam didn’t have a chance. After killing off a group of homeless people, we’d stumbled into a fight with corporate security goons. The incident ended with our arrest and subsequent interrogation. The interrogation lasted half a gaming session and included various methods of torture conjured up by Howe. Based on that session alone, I can only conclude that Howe must have been an ex-Stasi or KBG agent in a former life. Again, it was his way of bringing down every force imaginable on our heads.
Another incident involved a brief gun battle with hospital security—and to this day I still have no idea what we were doing in the hospital. My character was attempting to toss a flash bang into the hospital waiting room, when Howe made me roll a handful of six-sided (D6) dice. My dice roll was low. Howe smiled and rolled a few dice of his own. He chuckled. Rolled twice more in secret. The whole thing ended with my character tossing an incendiary grenade into a nearby oxygen storage room. The hospital was leveled along with a nearby nursing home. Somehow our characters managed to escape without a scratch.
Our tour of death and destruction changed settings, as I grew bored of cyberpunk and asked Howe about moving on to something more exciting. This prompted Howe to change the storyline, tweaking it in a way to fit our demented gaming style. Our characters were kidnapped by aliens, who’d heard about our earthly exploits. They needed some Terran muscle to move in on their enemies. They wanted to capitalize on our ability to turn living beings into pounds of mutilated flesh.
The new setting was borrowed from a little-known game called Star Frontiers. Star Frontiers was TSR’s (creator and publisher of Dungeons & Dragons) failed attempt to create a serious space adventure. For us, Star Frontiers offered several new killing fields. New alien worlds became our shooting galleries, our explosive-laden playgrounds. Our intergalactic debauchery destroyed a dozen worlds, with each world destroyed in some unique, almost artistic way. One world was wiped out by a flesh-eating plague. Another obliterated by its sun. A planet consumed by supermassive colonies of nanite cells. Entire species were scratched out of existence. We stole spaceships and jettisoned crew members out of airlocks and into the hard vacuum of space. Mayhem, murder, and outright plunder became the name of the game. We were the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, coming to wreak havoc on mortal souls everywhere. We were the Devourers of Worlds, galactic meat grinders traveling between the stars.
The summer following my high school graduation put a damper on the daily game sessions at JADE. I knew was I going to start college in August. The college I was going to was some three hundred miles away, making it too far for regular gaming commutes. Something told me that the group needed to end the game with a bang—a campaign to end all gaming campaigns. I wanted a campaign that ended in a total party kill (TPK).
I told Howe about my idea. A TPK was in line with Howe’s sadistic gamemastering sensibilities. Thus, he agreed to end the campaign with a real blowout of a TPK. He began plotting out the new campaign’s general structure. This led to our characters being brought back to Earth in a stolen spaceship. It was the Welcome Home Tour. Our intergalactic shenanigans followed in tow. A coalition of vengeful aliens began an invasion of Earth, threatening to wipe out all humans. This was payback for our intergalactic killing spree.
With our weapons locked and loaded, we stole an alien capital ship that was about ten kilometers in length. This required a little finesse that was well beyond our usual method of greasing opponents or taking over enemy ships. We vented the ship’s air supply. This took longer than we had hoped. The alien invasion was successfully sterilizing entire continents of human beings and turning the Earth’s surface into molten glass. This prompted a last-minute decision to go out with a real bang. We steered the capital ship toward the Earth’s atmosphere, blowing away alien warships left and right. The ship’s systems started going critical. “Core containment breached.” We were leaking radiation like an old Russian submarine. “Critical core conditions imminent.”
Then boom. Nothing but a white searing light. A million-gigaton explosion obliterated the Earth’s atmosphere and everything on the surface.
When I started college in August, I couldn’t help but wonder how I was going to satisfy my gaming fix. I was in a new town and hundreds of miles away from the cramped JADE office, where I had spent countless hours gaming. I was surprised to find that others had the same interests. Some of my fellow students had the same needs for buffoonery and destruction.
I started a gaming group in my dorm hall by setting up shop in empty common areas. The group was a big hit. Four gamers turned out for the first gaming sessions. We were traveling across the galaxy, fighting the Wrath in our homebrew Stargate roleplaying game. We fought as guerrillas in a post-apocalyptic landscape. The bodies were stacked like cordwood. The blood ran in the streets. The dice clattered on top of tables, with silent prayers or mutterings under the breath of each player. I was transported back to that day when I came to Howe’s office in JADE. It was a euphoria I didn’t understand, nor did I care to. There was something about butchering imaginary people and destroying peaceful alien worlds
