me when i unleash sand and dust and particles upon the world
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this boiled egg growing out of a dead tree is a slime mold called a false puffball (Reticularia lycoperdon). i don't get to see slime molds often at all so i was pretty happy about it. the video was taken a couple of days later, after it started cracking and releasing spores, and it ended with my thumb covered in shit, so i can't say i recommend the experience

The false puffball, Batamon, and Starborn
False Puffballs
False puffballs (Drakon caelestis), more commonly known as pseudopuffs or even just puffballs, are the result of convergent evolution. Nobody is certain how and why they evolved to become near-identical to true puffballs (or Astrals), as true puffballs inevitably outcompete them. False puffballs evolved from true dragons 1.5 billion years ago, and as such, their blood is always a bright lavender hue.
Unlike true puffballs, false puffballs are not purely magical in origin; as far as science is concerned, false puffballs are normal animals (although they have a much higher magical potential than most). False puffballs reproduce asexually and will lay a single egg at a time. Once an egg is laid, it is usually deposited on another planet, where it will remain for roughly one hundred years before hatching. The egg will slowly absorb life energy from the environment around it, which influences the young's physical traits and element(s).
Newly-hatched false puffballs are very independent and are able to fend for themselves immediately after hatching. During their first one thousand years of life, young false puffballs are extremely adaptable and their physical traits will change when their conditions do. They are able to grow new body parts if needed, and body parts that hinder them will fall off. (Attempting to raise a false puffball hatchling is extremely difficult, as they thrive in rough conditions. There are many sad stories of all of a hand-reared hatchling's limbs falling off due to disuse.) For the next three thousand years or so, their wings, horns, tails and other physical traits will lose their malleability and will develop into their final appearance.
False puffballs are fully mature at around five thousand years old; they can live for up to one million years.
While false puffballs tend to develop elemental abilities similar to those of true puffballs, they cannot use copy abilities, inhale, or float. Despite this, false puffballs have the capacity to become incredibly powerful. A famous example is the hero known as Celesta Knight, a false puffball from the faraway Conquest Galaxy who led four other heroes into battle against a terrifying threat and banished it back to the realm from whence it came.
True puffballs instinctively fear false puffballs and many will hunt them. False puffballs are few in areas inhabited by true puffballs. In areas where true puffballs are absent, false puffballs are numerous.
False puffballs can be considered superpredators.
Batamon
When the egg of a false puffball comes in contact with Dark Matter, it becomes infected and will hatch into a Batamon.
It is extremely rare for Batamon to live longer than one thousand years. Those that do will never develop wings, horns, a tail, or any other defining characteristics other than colour. Batamon are unable to use magic and are effectively defenceless. Their bodies are fragile, too, and they tend to prefer avoiding conflict due to being so weak.
Starborn
When the egg of a false puffball comes in contact with a true puffball, it becomes infected and will hatch into a Starborn.
Starborn are functionally identical to normal false puffballs. However, they tend to be more powerful, and can be differentiated from a normal false puffball by looking at the eye; Starborn always have pupils shaped like a four-pointed star, and normal false puffballs do not. Due to it being very unlikely for a true puffball to come across the egg of a false puffball, Starborn are incredibly rare.
In places uninhabited by true puffballs, Starborn are revered.
True Starborn
When the egg of a false puffball comes in contact with an unusually powerful true puffball (known as a blue star Astral), it may absorb the life energy of the true puffball and hatch into a True Starborn.
True Starborn are very similar to regular Starborn, but are even more powerful and rare.
There are currently no True Starborn known to exist, but that will change in the future.
Other Infected False Puffballs
Only Dark Matter and true puffballs have been confirmed to be able to infect false puffball eggs. However, research is underway to determine if false puffball eggs can be infected by pure forms of Dream, Heart, and Soul Matter as well.
Some claim that undead can infect false puffball eggs, but this has yet to be proven.

Fungi time
As autumn intensifies whole woods, logs, lawns and heaths come alive with enchanting colour, eccentric fruiting bodies of fungal wonders.
The fairytale toadstool, ruby and white-spotted fly agarics spring up, pizza like as they unfurl. Enigmatic pure purple amethyst deceivers and otherworldly devil’s fingers sights to behold; as are mysterious shaggy ink caps that emerge in the grass and warm coloured shaggy scalycaps that huddle around tree bases. Yellow stagshorn, club-like tuning fork and candlesnuff fungi rise into the air. The mighty parasols, complex panthercaps, puffball, earthball and false death caps bring beautiful patterns. It's satisfying to observe bleeding fairy helmets, waxcaps, the meandering patterns of turkey tail; earthstars and eyelash fungi other treasured prizes of captivating fungi watching walks.

TWSTOBER DAY 11 PART 2
The rest of the trek went by in a flash. With Yuu pointing out different plants and fungi, and Jade explaining each of them with a trained knowledge. From Oyster mushrooms and Chicory, to puffballs and ramp weeds. Yuu even cut a few shrooms to take home for themselves.
“I must say, this is quite the collection we’ve amassed. This will make for a rather fine meal.” Jade said, holding the jar of mushrooms and plants the two had collected. Yuu gave a nod, their hand linked with Jade’s own as they continued to walk up the trail. “If it's you cooking, it’s going to taste amazing!” the two let out a chuckle before Yuu let out a gasp. The trees had thined out, revealing a clearing overlooking a large field. The sun was on setting over the horizon, casting rays of yellow and red across the sky. Yuu slowly walked into the clearing, their mouth agape. “Woah…”
“The end of the path is always the most beautiful.” Jade looked from the sunset toward Yuu, a smile on his lips. “I am glad I could show this to you.” Yuu looked up at Jade, their eyes meeting his mismatched ones as they smiled.
“Yeah..I’m glad you took me along, Jade. Maybe…we can do this more often.”
“Nothing would make me happier.” Jade gave their hand a gentle squeeze. “Now lets get this meal started. I know a trail like that always works up my appetite.” Yuu nodded, the two sitting on the ground and setting up a small fire. With a foldable pot and water from Jade's canteen, the two had a nice soup going, the rich woodsy aromas causing both to water at the mouths. As Jade was stirring the pot, Yuu pulled out a few mushroom they collected themselves. True Morels, Jade had called them. He had pointed out a cluster of them, telling Yuu about their veiny caps and their smoky taste. They couldn't be eaten raw, but given they were making a stew, it could be an interesting flavor combo.
“How about we add some Morels? You said they're smoky, right?” Jade looked down at the mushrooms in Yuu's hands before letting out a soft chuckle, a sharp toothed grin on his lips.
“If I was anyone else, then yes. I would say we add them.”Jade rested the spoon on the pot before kneeling in front of Yuu, taking the mushroom from Yuu's hands. “And then we'd both meet a early end.” Yuu's eyes went wide, their mouth agape.
“But I thought you said Morels were edible.”
“That I did. True Morels are edibles. But this…”He takes out his hunting knife once more, splitting the mushroom in half. “Is an imposter. A false morel.” Yuu looked at Jade, their eyes brimming with curiosity as Jade showed them the mushroom halves. “True Morels are hollow inside. False ones are solid, just like this.” He hands the cut shroom back to Yuu. “Although there have been cases of people eating these mushrooms and surviving, most are not as lucky.” Yuu looked from Jade down to the mushroom in their hands, mumbling a soft “sorry” under their breath. Jade moves a hand to their chin, tilting it upwards so he could meet their eyes. “It is alright. I appreciate you trying to learn. In fact, I'm flattered you remembered my lessons.” His smile softened a bit, his fingers gently rubbing against Yuu’s cheek.
“I quite enjoyed sharing today with you, and I intend to do so more often.” Yuu’s cheeks flushed a deep red with each and every word, only able to quietly nod in response. “Come now, let's enjoy the fruits and fungi of our labor."

anyway in better news I believe I found some chanterelles today
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
couldn't quite tell about the false gills so I'm unsure but I wasn't going to take them in any case so I just admired them. they were whitish inside but looked a little past their prime
I'm very happy, if they are indeed chanterelles then this marks the 4th edible mushroom I've encountered and ID'd :] (the others were a mature pheasant back I made broth out of, a common puffball I fried, and a chicken of the woods that was a bit buggy and rotten so I left it be)

The White Album - false parasol, Leucocoprinus cepistipes, Marasmius sp, puffball - conventional wisdom says Lycoperdon perlatum doesn't grow on wood and it's probably Apioperdon pyriforme, but it looks like the former to me. Also I've witnessed some bizarre behavior re: using damp decaying wood as host around here, like species of Russula growing out of a dead log. Desperate times call for desperate measures, etc

The Airs of Rebel's Outopos
Not every night in the new city is the same.
Inspired by a recent post and challenge - accessible here - that created "Airs of X" for their character's version of the City in Silver. Thought I'd have a go at trying the same.
The following city may include: spiders, militants, the breaking of cosmic law for ideological and personal gain, and fungi.
0: Beyond the walls, the distant crack of a gunshot.
1-3: Something humped and many-legged scuttles across the façade of a building, then is gone.
4-6: Shadowy figures cluster around a communal bonfire, laughing and chatting.
7: Tracklayers kneel around a patch of soil and pull strange-shaped devices from the dirt. Some devices hum. Others tick.
8-10: A hinge-hound nudges your side and whines in search of a pet. A bloody Ministry badge dangles from its lower-left jaw.
11-14: Urchins shriek and whoop from the roof-tops as they set off unlicensed fireworks at each other.
15-18: A visiting hobbyist looks on with awkward thanks as her automobile is pulled from the muck by a horse-sized, moon-eyed monitor lizard.
19-22: Spiders spill from an open sewer hatch in a shimmering, emerald tide.
23-26: Moonlight washes gently over the street. Somewhere else, the Internationale is played on union pipes.
27-30: A Young Stag recent to the city walks tentatively, but openly hand-in-tentacle with his rubbery nurse paramour.
31-34: A sudden clearing of the crowd: a reiver patrol has returned to the city. The booming calls and clicks of their terror birds reverberate in the bones.
35-38: False-skeletons from the Bone Market are an increasingly popular novelty fad. Most inhabitants find them kitsch. Some find them aspirational.
39-42: Noises erupt from an ampitheatre. Some are the cheers of the crowd. Some are the bellows of ancient creatures. Some are like nothing you have ever heard.
43-45: Anarchists and cladesfolk from the Roof conduct illicit business in open plazas. Weapons for allies; metal for flesh.
46-49: Phosphorescent scarab hives score mesmeric ribbons of viric and apocyan in the air. Passersby yawn and remember their beds.
50: The city’s vitality leads to miniature ecosystems within the depths of the costermongers’ carts. Leechberries parasitize the helpless flanks of the thunder melons but flee from the predation of needle-carrots. All hide from the vakeapple.
51-53: Amateur aero-enthusiasts and beast-breeders alike surround a recently-docked balloon from the Roof. Talk is already forming of a locally-grown air fleet.
54-57: The side of a wall is plastered with broadsheets, posters, hand scrawled drawings: faces of officials, constables, factory owners. A new arrival walks up to carefully, methodically cross out the face of an Iron and Misery overseer.
58-61: Webs shroud a cluster of streets like banners. Handmade signs advertise the services of silk weavers, scrimshanders, venom mixologists.
62-65: Raucous youth assemble for a trip to London. There is furious argument over whether to see the Museum of Prelapsarian History or Museum of Injustice first.
66-69: Poets of the Nocturnal Ooze movement seek inspiration in the city’s fungal-commons. The more fortunate find their lips and pens fecund with creative spore. The less fortunate are attacked by blemmigans.
70-73: Mist forms on the opposite side of a mirror. The eyes of the aurochs are upon you.
74-76: Tracklayers hack away at undergrowth recently and rapidly sprouted up through an alleyway. The city’s vitality is appreciated, but occasionally overwhelming.
77: Banners with popular phrases of resistance are plentiful on festival days. ‘CAST OFF THESE CHAINS’. ‘DUSK BEFORE DAWN’. ‘DO NOT FORGET. DO NOT FORGIVE’.
78-80: The rattling of an osteomonger’s tambourine. Bones! Bones for the picking!
81-83: Urchins crowd around the storefront of a recently-immigrated Unsettling Toymaker. They stare at a City Seeding automaton with longing and awe.
84-86: A field of puffballs explodes into a cloud of white, soft spores. For a few moments, it is as if false-winter has come to the city.
87-90: A diplomatic deviless discusses opportunities for collaboration with an opportunistic insurgent, mandibles slowly scraping at a tin of tobacco.
91: The air is hazy, clotted and copper-scented. The heart races; the teeth bare. Someone is committing Red Science.
92: Around the armory, the earth shudders and metal screams in birthing-cry: another mortar-beast claws its way out from the dirt to add to the city’s defenses.
93: Shapelings of all forms relax in an amber spring, bathing and contorting their flesh in novel configurations. It is difficult not to stare.
94: Droplets of slobber on your shoulders. Many eyes, watching. You curse whoever decided to hatch enough brachiating spindlewolves for them to breed true.
95: A visiting academic runs from a nearby lecture hall with pale face and heaving breath. “The sigils,” they moan. “They just…cut open the sigils!”
96: A dirigible from Station VIII drifts closer than it should have. Howitzer-beasts stir. Rockets sprout like teeth. A hush falls over the city for several hours.
97: Here, the city’s walls are slick with a viscid slime-mold that stains crimson and splotches like a fresh bruise. Is the city remembering an injury it once suffered? An injury it once inflicted?
98: A furious rain falls tonight, far from the tepid drizzles of London. By tomorrow morning, the city’s walls will have sprouted further still.
99: Tonight the walls drip with amber and the scent of lemon wafts from underneath the city: an auspicious time, according to local legend, for creating new beasts and new families.
100: For the briefest of moments, you can feel the pulse of the city’s heart. For the briefest of moments, there is no light, no cold, no death: only dark, warmth, and vitality. This is the Liberation of Night.
