How Much Territory Are the Fallout Player Characters Actually Micromanaging: An Analysis
I did some amateur research to figure out which of the Fallout protagonists (specifically 3, NV, and 4) have a reasonable area of land to constantly traverse. I used Apple Maps to find the straightest possible walking path from a point on either end of the game map, then multiplied the north-south and east-west figures to get an approximate square mileage. Since none of the walking paths were completely straight, these numbers will all be a little higher than actual. BUT the game maps also don’t completely correlate to the real-life locations, so consider these numbers to be estimates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Commonwealth: Around 600 square miles. This is honestly pretty manageable, especially if you’re teleporting or helicoptering all over the place. It would be exhausting, but you could theoretically get across the map in a day with time to spare for questing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Capital Wasteland: Around 800 square miles. Fairfax is the halfway point; very few locations on the western half of the map actually correspond to anything in real life. The exception is the cavern Little Lamplight is based on, which would make the game map 100 miles long. The map definitely doesn’t extend that far into Virginia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
New Vegas: Kind of hard to calculate at this scale, but we’re looking at a little under 3000 square miles! Through. the Mojave. Desert. The Courier is really going to have to commit to a course of action before traveling, because they won’t be coming back for about a week.
If you’re a fanfic writer, remember that you don’t owe realism to anyone. BUT, if realism is something you care about for your writing, keep these distances in mind!
(Sequel: distance from game maps to DLCs)

Ulysses obsession with the Courier is a special type of sad to me cause the Courier’s part was so important but so unwitting. They had no idea what was in the package they delivered and neither did he. Neither had an idea of what it could’ve done and the Courier was only caring out their job (mind you the Courier could be killed via notes in the express contract if they don’t). To them it was just another regular delivery to the divide and one that they likely thought would help, just like all the ones before.
It’s so tragic for Ulysses to hold so much ire to the Courier when it really was the case of it could’ve been anyone. Anyone could have delivered that package but they did and so he focused the blame on them and it destroys what he is trying to instill in the courier on a fundamental level.
#like yeah the courier delivered the package but in the end that’s a job#any random courier could’ve delivered it especially since we know in the past the factions were farther apart and this travel was a smidge#safer but courier six got it and this Ulysses blamed them#like I don’t care much for Ulysses because I think lonesome road embodies don’t shoot the messenger at it core#and what people focus on doesn’t focus on the fact that in the bigger picture#everything went wrong because two factions were at war and at some point the codes would have been delivered#and the divide destroyed cause with how close it is to NCR territory it would of been found#like there is an inevitable and too many people treat Ulysses as if he knows more or is more aware of the idiosyncrasies of conflict#when he’s like fundamentally flawed just at the standard of being a legion apologist STILL and just how focused he is on one persons#involvement cause yeah choices matter even the small one but I think Veronica’s quest says it best with a line from the courier#you cant control what they do#like the courier couldn’t and can’t control what they deliver and yet it’s got them in hot water multiple times#like do you think they enjoy being shot or knowing they are indirectly responsible for activating the annihilation of a community#to me it’s hypocrisy to be willing to end the world or one world to prove a point and whatever argument made that only military factions#suffer forget there are innocent civilians suffering that had no part and Ulysses is no better than the Courier#I don’t like devils advocate and a lot of the dlc just feels like that but idk I know people love it but the depth is just not there for mr#ulysses fnv#fallout#fallout new vegas#courier six#the courier#lonesome road#the courier has very little personality outside what we give them but some lines and delivery paint a picture#like uhhhh undertale deltarune rules ig

H2’s dialogue files give us some insight into how and why synths can’t remember the Institute’s teleportation.
-
Player: So you know where the Institute is, right?
H2-22: {He's talking about something he is programmed not to remember. It's a difficult subject. He tries to force himself to remember and fails.} Stockton already asked me that. I don't know. I really don't. He says no synths know.
-
Which is super interesting, but it also raises a horrifying scenario: Sturges and/or Danse return from the final battle and literally cannot remember how they got in and out.
They were fighting the Institute and now they’re on a skyscraper. Preston’s like “Sturges, you were operating the relay, how do you not remember?”
Sole Survivor thinks “ok well that’s a big conversation for not right now. time to nuke my son.”
Meanwhile Danse is wondering if his power armor would let him jump off the tower without dying.

I really wish I liked traveling with Deacon more. I like what he stands for, he has an interesting backstory and the potential for a lot of complexity as a character as he struggles to redeem himself.
But he’s also a blank slate. I get that he’s made himself into a blank slate intentionally, scrapping his entire identity to play whatever roles the Railroad needs him to. And with the guilt he carries, no wonder he wants to be literally anyone else.
But he’s so blank that he’s a flat character. You can’t even talk to him like the other companions, can’t ask him his thoughts or how he feels about you. He’s a wall of deflections, and there’s only the one final affinity scene where he shows any vulnerability at all, and it feels so out of the blue because before then all he’s done is lie to you, and after that scene he just… doesn’t talk, aside from the occasional snappy background quip.
He’s distant and blank by design, and it works for his character, but that makes him no fun to befriend in my opinion. So why turn Deacon into a companion at all if we can’t really connect with him the way we do with other companions? It almost feels like they decided to make him a companion at the last minute just so there would be a companion for every faction.
But, like…. Glory is right there. Let me travel with her!!!!
