There is an idea present in the Jedi Council’s tellings of the origins of the Jedi Civil War – not just in the KOTOR games and tie-ins but SWTOR’s Galactic Timeline as well – that you can trace the troubles in the Mandalorian Wars and the origin of the Jedi Civil War back to Revan and Malak’s defiance of the Council’s order to stay out of the Mandalorian Wars. That Revan and Malak’s fall was rooted in the hubris of thinking that they knew better than the Council. That if only Revan, Malak, the Exile and their cohort hadn’t disobeyed, then everything would have been fine.

I don’t think that everything would have been fine if Revan and Malak had just obeyed the Council. The Mandalorians would have continued with their invasion of the Republic, killing hundreds of billions of people. The True Sith Empire still wouldn’t have revealed themselves.

Eventually, Mandalore the Ultimate would have decided that the time was right to force the Jedi to enter the war, on the Mandalorians’ terms rather than the Order’s or the Republic’s. One advantageous way to do this would have been to uncover the location of the Dantooine Enclave, the Jedi’s primary base in the Outer-rim, and nuke the planet from orbit. The True Sith Empire still wouldn’t have revealed themselves.

Having been directly attacked, the surviving members of the Jedi Council would have been forced to enter the war, whether or not they believed the shadowy threat might still be a problem. Their inaction would have devastated the reputation of the Jedi in the Republic and neutral worlds – the Jedi stood by and allowed trillions to die, only getting involved when it was their own necks on the line. Revan, Malak, and the other Jedi who wanted to enter the war earlier would have been furious that the Council had countermanded them from acting on their own better judgment only for this to be the result. The split in the Order still would have happened, just differently.

But I think that the Revanchist Jedi had their own equivalent of this idea – that if the Jedi Council had just answered the Republic’s call to war like the Revanchists everything would have gone better, and the Jedi Civil War would have been avoided. I think they were wrong too.

Given Mandalore the Preserver’s account of the Mandalorian high command’s assessment of the potential threat of a Jedi contingent led by Master Kavar, I imagine the war would have continued to go badly for the Republic under Kavar’s leadership until Revan and Malak became desperate enough to assassinate Kavar so Revan could take his place as supreme commander. Possibly after the Mandalorians assassinated, injured or otherwise took out of commission battle-meditation prodigy Padawan Bastila Shan. Revan and Malak still would have arced through a decent to become fallen heroes. The split in the Order still would have happened, just differently.

A white nothingness surrounded Revan. He felt a strange peace. This was as good a place as any to spend eternity. The last 24 hours assaulted his memory like heavy artillery. Malak revealing his true identity; Bastila confirming it before being captured, Carth having to be restrained from pounding Revan's face into the floor. Revan was tired. He was tired of the lies; the half-truths, the bullshit. He was tired of not being able to save those he met. He was tired of everyone expecting him to be something, someone, that he could no longer be. Revan trudged forward. It was so peaceful here. By and by, the former Sith Lord came to a small grove of pillars. A bed of some sort was in the centre; and an alien creature regarded him.

"What what what?" said the creature.

"Someone else come into my prison already?"

Revan had no patience for this. He just wanted to be alone. He made to move past the alien, but it blocked him."

"Don't go! Stay... let's talk..." it said.

Revan sighed.

"What do you want to talk about?"

"Who am I? Who are you? I had a name once, many millennia ago... but I can't remember it!"

"What kind of creature are you?" said Revan.

"I... I'm not sure." said the alien.

"My people once ruled the entire galaxy. But we were cruel, and rapacious. I tried to stop them... tried to form a rebellion... against the tyrants... but it was to no avail..."

"Is that how you came to be in this... place?" said Revan.

"Yes, I suppose it must be!" said the creature.

"Although it has been so long... I barely remember any of it!"

Revan looked at the creature. He looked around at the nothingness. He thought of Bastila; the way they shared secret glances when no one was looking. How they had talked and talked and talked for hours at the Jedi Enclave until night had fallen. Revan remembered how soft and sweet Bastila's lips had felt against his own. He knew then that he couldn't give up. He had to at least try to free the galaxy from Malak's yoke.

"How do I get out of here?" he asked.

"I could send you back, except I want to leave here too." said the creature.

"Do I have to fight you?" said Revan.

"This is a mind prison." said the alien.

"It is perhaps fitting that we engage in a battle of wits to decide which of us may leave."

"So a riddle game." said Revan.

The creature clapped its hands.

"Yes, exactly! I shall begin: thirty white horses on a red hill. First they champ; then they stamp, then they stand still."

Revan thought for a moment.

"Teeth!" he said.

"Blast! You win this round. Now it's your turn." said the alien.

Revan wracked his brains. He hoped whatever was left of his mind could cope with this challenge.

Then he said: "A box without hinges, key or lid. Yet inside golden treasure is hid."

The creature stroked its face.

"Hmm, a box without hinges... key... lid... an egg. Yes, an egg!"

Revan smiled a smile he did not feel.

"That's right. Now it's your turn."

"Sometimes it flies, sometimes it crawls, but it always passes inexorably. We mark it, save it, waste it, bide it, race against it." said the alien.

Revan's face crinkled. He could do this, he knew he could. Bastila was counting on him.

At last he said "Time. Time is the answer."

"Yes! Your turn."

Revan thought and thought and thought.

"Flying to Dantooine, I meet five ships; each with five passengers, each passenger having five pets. How many are flying to Dantooine?"

The creature clapped its hands to its head.

"Oh no, mathematics! I was never very good at this. Let's see, five ships, five passengers... oh, I don't know! You have beaten me!"

"Now will you let me leave?" said Revan.

"Yes, yes, of course. Fair is fair. Let me see if I can just..."

The creature sat down cross legged. The nothingness seemed to grow brighter and brighter and Revan was...

...standing in the Ebon Hawk's cargo hold, the mysterious box in front of him sealed tight. Revan knew the coming weeks and months would be difficult. He would have to earn his friends' trust all over again. He would have to resist the lure of the dark side. And he would have to kill Malak. Revan knew this would not be over until one of them destroyed the other. Malak was a superior swordsman; it had only been Bastila's intervention that had saved Revan the last time they had fought. But Revan had to at least try. Taking a deep breath, Revan left the cargo hold and headed for the cockpit.

dark side revan/bastila is the peak of toxic femslash to me. like first of all bastila doing All That to revan in the first place (the bringing back from the brink of death, the cosigning on the brainwashing, the pretending she has no idea who revan is bc revan has no idea who revan is). the enemies to lovers potential. revan being older and more experienced and having had the same pressure on her shoulders placed there by the council that bastila now does. but also revan's former apprentice turning bastila to the dark side only for revan to kill him and bastila to become her new apprentice. bastila swearing herself to revan as dark lord of the sith. the council's two golden children both fallen to the dark side. they'd be so toxic, so codependent, so fucked up. i love them

Different planets to the first - obviously taris and rakata prime have to stay but different star map planets

Perhaps some atm-purely-canon concepts such as force dyads? Between revan and the exile?

Relationship headcanons I guess???

Juhani and Revan are in a queerplatonic relationship. I just think ace lesbian Juhani is Neat

Revan's love for Carth reminds her most strongly of what she felt for Alek, back when they were Jedi. it's definitely romantic in nature, but it's a bit...distant, perhaps, hard to hold on to sometimes. a bit painful, but worth it in the end

it's more than just physical lust that Revan feels for Canderous. it's something deeper, something that makes her feel free, even with how fucked the Council left her. it makes her feel...whole

being around Bastila can be difficult, sometimes, because she knows. she knows what the Council did to her, and despite that, it feels...safe. comforting to be around her, even if she's been prone to lecture. she just wants Bastila to feel as safe and whole as she does

Mission is Revan's Little Sister. she doesn't know how to be a parent, so she'll leave that to Carth and Canderous

sometimes, Revan will refer to herself as "the Ebon Hawk's resident Droid Mother". she doesn't remember building and programming HK, but she still feels something she can only really describe as parental pride. she does all of the maintenance for both HK and T3

Jolee is...well, a grounding influence, honestly. he's helped to keep Revan from falling apart much further than she might have if he wasn't there to offer her a steady guiding hand

Reading these Jedi: Survivor theories about cloned Cal or even a real Cal that’s fallen…

I just had a thought. Cal has a very special and useful gift in the Force. You know who else had a rare Force ability and was a major character in a Star Wars game? Bastila Shan.

Is Cal gonna go through what Bastila did?

I think KotOR is considered canon. Because in the mobile game Galaxy of Heroes, Revan and Bastila Shan are characters that can be unlocked. From what I could see, only characters that are from the canon timeline of Star Wars are included (meaning that characters from the old EU are not included). I'm not sure but that's what I understand from the game. And also, when you try to unlock Revan, you'll get background info about the Old Republic, kinda like a story mode.

I WISH (kind of). It’s definitely Legeds (for now). Believe me, I’d be throwing a fucking block party if I got my Revan and Bastila back in canon (almost did with TCW SO CLOSE SO CLOOOOOOOOOSE). But we’ll see what they end up doing with TOR content that is supposed to be inspiration for one of the new Star Wars series’.
