sonic using ore and shadow using boku is something i think about Constantly...i feel like i sort of struggle to capture the similar implications this has just because obviously english doesn't have personal pronouns but yknow. i hope i manage to make him come off appropriately arrogant and cocky but significantly more subtle and even fully subdued especially compared to sonic.

it's a fun balance trying to merge what i like about both scripts; since i grew up with sonic i obviously like the silliness and drama of the official translations of the older games even if they aren't 100% accurate but i also strive to lean back into the intent of the originals where ever i can so fingers crossed it shows :fingerscrossed:

Ooo I just noticed sonic movie threes song titles are have references to the games!!! (I’ll explain some of the ones I know under the cut, but I’m also not going to look anything up so I’ll definitely miss a few)

1. One of shadows first lines in sonic adventure 2 (‘it all starts with this, a gem containing the ultimate power’ something like that)

2 the ultimate life form is what shadow is called, I don’t think they call him that in the movies, but that’s what he is in the games

3 and 4 aren’t references (to my knowledge)

5 and 6. Both are referencing Sonic’s first like is sonic adventure 2 (talk about a low budget flight no snacks or movies I’m out of here!)

7. Uhhh could be a reference idk I forgot

8,9,10,11,12 are more around things that happen in the movie, (the Maria one could be shadows scream from in the game, but I could be missing something or pushing it lol)

13 in the game maria makes a wish before she dies to shadow, and it’s said a lot as ‘Maria’s wish’ so that’s probably what it’s referring too (could also be because you make a wish in a star and in the movie she’s compared to a star but it’s probably the first one)

14 I mean it fits for both games and movie

Is Shadow not so much the self-esteemed and smug type in Japanese dub? I don't neccisarily mean to stereotype people on their chosen pronoun but doesn't boku as your chosen pronoun usually indicate more humility? I always kind of took Shadow to be the more smug and arrogant type that I'd associate with the ore pronoun.

Maekawa explains in a SONIC CHANNEL interview why Shadow uses that pronoun; One late night, when I was thinking about the lines of the confrontation scene of Sonic vs Shadow inside my car returning home from work, after Sonic said, “I found you, faker!”, when Shadow responded for the first time, “Faker? I think you’re the fake hedgehog around here,” I felt, It has come!, for the first time. From the tone of the voice that had come to echo in my mind at that time, I feel that Shadow’s personal pronoun had been decided to be “boku” naturally. This personal pronoun “boku” of Shadow is very popular to women, but I remember that there were many disagreeing opinions inside my team in the beginning. However, because I myself treated Shadow as an image that is a very subtle and pure character, this “boku” was a part that I could not throw away.

Flashback: Awakening - Part 1

It had been some time since Metal Sonic went ballistic and tried to take over the world on his own. He was defeated by Sonic and his friends, with everyone having played their part in it. While there may have been no serious injuries or actual casualties, there was one thing that went largely unaccounted for in the aftermath; an entire ship full of clones of one Ultimate Lifeform.

It was one of the first things to be destroyed, being stripped for parts to make the giant metal monstrosity that Metal Sonic would become, Metal Overlord. In that destruction, many of the capsules that contained clones of Shadow were lost to the bottom of the sea with the rest of the ships. A horrible fate, to be sure.

But one of them had gotten launched in the commotion, and while the capsule was damaged, it managed to land on the shore of an island not far from where the battle took place.

And it was only a matter of time before he was found once more.

The capsule had long since drained of all the cloning agent, having cracked upon landing on the island. It managed to hold him long enough to be recovered, but had also lost enough that it was detrimental to the process. Still, as he was in the capsule, he was still unconscious... until the doctor had found him.

He tapped on the keypad near the bottom of the capsule, causing the rest of the liquid to pour out, and awakening the clone. The hedgehog's eyes would slowly open. An evil grin adorns the doctor's face.

"It is a pleasure to see you once again, Ultimate Lifeform," the Doctor's voice would ring out. "You've been asleep for quite some time."

"Shadow" would look up at the doctor, confused about the situation. See you once again, he says... but this man is almost wholly unfamiliar to him. He almost looks like The Professor, but... he didn't even know who the Professor was supposed to be, either. His memories were hazy, a complete blur.

"...Who are you? Where am I?"

"Ah... that's to be expected. Your fall from space almost certainly caused some damage to your memories. Well, you may refer to me as Doctor Eggman - I am the one who took it upon myself to heal your injuries from your last battle."

"My... last battle?" The hedgehog grabbed his head, starting to get a headache from the shock of his memories being so suddenly shaken. "I-I'm not sure I understand..."

"Rest assured, that will be solved in due time. I was in the process of transferring you to one of my more private laboratories to further accelerate your recovery. Unfortunately, my vessel was attacked, and you were cast ashore, so I had to come and recover you myself once the commotion had died down."

Silence from "Shadow" as he looked down at his hands. Something about this situation didn't feel right... but whoever this man was, he clearly knew something about this situation. However, Eggman would speak once more.

"To make matters worse... your old friends have replaced you with a copy. I had warned you about this before, but you didn't heed my warnings. And now... it's far too late."

"Shadow" froze in response. He looks up at Robotnik, a sense of anger fueling him. There was someone out there trying to copy him? This had managed to shake loose some memories...

"Say something, you fake hedgehog!" "I found you, faker!" "I think YOU'RE the fake hedgehog around here." "You're not even good enough to be my fake."

...but in this context, they were horribly misinterpreted.

"...That... faker..." he mumbles. Dozens of thoughts flooded the hedgehog's mind. Could he be the one who put me in this position? Why I feel so weak? Could he have also attacked the Doctor to prevent me from recovering?

"Shadow" reached out and grabbed the side of the pod, trying to pull himself to his feet... only to find out that his legs would give out underneath him. As part of the damage from the cloning process, his legs were much too weak. It would be then that he also noticed that the red streaks on his arms and legs were a dull yellow in color. His ruby eyes widened - what was going on? He wasn't always this color... was he?

Seeing him struggle, Eggman let out a small chortle. "Oh, you poor thing... you've been damaged in the attack, and your healing pod didn't have the time to fully fix you. But no matter... if you come with me, I'll have you back on your feet in no time." He holds out a hand to the cloned hedgehog. "So, what do you say? Partners?"

There were too many factors. Too many unknowns for the hedgehog to feel perfectly comfortable in any decision he would make here. But the few memories he does have... they are working against him. He looks at this man, a man who reminds him of someone he once trusted with his life... and he can't bring himself to say no.

He takes the Doctor's hand into his own. Their partnership was formed...

And soon, the fake hedgehog would fall at the hands of the real Shadow the Hedgehog.

i personally think the fact that sonic prime is canon into the sonic universe is incredibly stupid, so im changing that which also means i can change their ages and a little bit of their backstories! the only one I actually changed up at all was shadz so here it is: grew up on the arc, most of that stuff is the same but when shadow fell he landed in green hills and GUN couldn't find him so just gave up. then, after 50yrs he wakes up and starts messing around at night, meeting rouge and omega through a series of coincidences; also accidentally making people thinks he's sonic cause fast and hedgehog, earning him the nickname faker. (i chose this cause i don't want sonic to deal with any genuinely world ending scenarios until the paradox prism stuff so it hurts extra bad)

second, sonic spends hours staring off into space now. he doesn't even fidget when he does this. tails is especially worried about this, so he's made a habit of checking the two places where he does this the most (the beach and the mountain) so he can snap sonic out of it. this is actually pretty helpful because sonic's mind can go to some.... dark places when he's alone for too long.

third, sonic covers his ears when he's nervous. its a pretty obvious tell so he tries to hide it, which only makes the thing that's making him nervous worse. cause of this, most of friends choose not to mention it, but its still kinda a problem with strangers.

fourth, sonic tends to avoid mirrors if he's not wearing his prosthetic or his jacket. he hates looking at his arm stump, and he especially hates when people ask about it. he has actually had some fun coming up with fake stories about how he lost it for extra nosy kids tho, so that's nice!

fifth, tho im not sure how it works from a technical perspective, the “voice” is supposed to be a physical-ish manifestation of Sonic’s guilt. something about the paradox prism energy or whatever, idk tbh

there’s som more u could mention, but im just gonna leave it at that!

edit: forgot to mention but also Sonic hasn’t been able to enter tail’s workshop since the paradox stuff. it’s still a lil too traumatic for him, but he has tried! the farthest he’s ever gotten was three quarters to the door.

also he’s really good at insults now. you get pretty good at targeting people’s weak spots after you’ve gotten your weak spots drilled in so bad you go insane. even accidentally! he’s had to apologize a lot.
