IndiePulse Reviews: Rain Walking, the latest album by Fred Hostetler
Review by Joseph Timmons, IndiePulse Journalist. Fred Hostetler, in his musical career has created music that inspires, the thoughtful contemplations that are walking meditations in music that has in its foundation a world view. From his rock and blues influenced tracks to his folk and mystically divine vocals and wit, there are hints of the Far East philosophy that allows us to enjoy and…

Starkid is one of the absolute best arguments for supprting independent art. The fact that the shows you're invested in can't get canceled by Big Daddy Streaming, the quality is always amazing, the love of the cast and crew doesn't get squeezed out by surprise budget reductions, the fact that since crowd funding provides almost all costs up front (plus the presence of voluntary digital ticket/in person tickets for additional funding), the fan base can access the full material for whatever cost they can contribute (even if you can give nothing monetarily, you will still get a professionally shot version of the material eventually, without surprise fees or password crackdowns, AND with captions/completely accesible regardless of location). The same goes for Tin Can Bros, Shipwrecked, and all the other associated theater and web series companies loosely connected to Starkid. Like, I cannot believe the amazing content provided to us at the same level as Broadway or streaming services with billion dollars at hand, with almost none of the catches that come with others. Like, I cannot believe that we get all of this right at our hands.

ive seen so many people wondering how starkid makes such good straight couples (lautski, paulkins, etc), but i think we really need to talk about this.
in a lot of todays modern media, shows centered around straight couples are heavily focused on the sexuality of it. while they may take a few episodes to flesh out a small pining story, starkid takes that to a whole new level.
let's look at lautski for example; our first introduction (I KNOW HE WAS IN TGWDLM AND BF I DONT CARE HE WASN'T TRULY INTRODUCED UNTIL NMT) to pete and steph was nmt2's episode, 'abstinence camp'. sure, we know that sexuality played a big part in this episode, but if you pay close attention, you know that nothing ever actually happens between steph and pete, they get caught by lumberaxe and then boy jerry before they can do anything.
before then, though, we get a back story of them meeting, it's shown how steph likes him for his little quirks and oddities, and how pete is happy that someone took the time to get to know that about him. before they join showers, they talk for what feels like forever, going back and forth.
however, in nerdy prudes must die AND the guy who didn't like musicals BOTH, neither of the couples even kiss, they get close but they don't. even npmd which centers around two high school seniors over the course of a few months, not even a peck on the cheek. HOWEVER, in scenes like the summoning, we can see steph and pete both trying to hide the other behind themselves.
in tgwdlm, paul sends himself into the theater to go take down the meteor so emma has some hopes of a life.
while it's implied that they love the other in a romantic sense, it's never outright said, because you don't make romantic bonds in the situations they were in!! they made the romantic connections before the actual plot of the musical gets started!! they're so close and care so much because of the shit they went through together!!
the reason why we're so captivated by straight couples from starkid is that they don't have to be couples to show how close they are and how much they care, because at the end of the day the lang brothers know that a bond is deepest when it's pure. if you care for someone enough, you'd do anything to keep them happy, even if it isn't with you.

I forget if it was Mariah or someone else who said it but someone mentioned a while ago how funny it would be to re-perform tgwdlm but with everyone's roles just picked from a hat and I haven't stopped thinking about it since.
Just imagine the chaos: Jon as Charlotte. Mariah strolling in as Mr. Davidson. Emma played by Jeff Blim. Corey popping up as the Greenpeace girl.
The things I'd do to see this

No but it's not just that Mariah and Joey do a perfect job at selling this scene
Tumblr media
It's that literally everything is lining up to make us the audience think there's a very real chance Peter might die.
It's that a Hatchetfield musical has literally never let their happy couple survive the end of the show. Why should these two be any different?
It's that the Lords in Black are deadly. Linda was killed in two different timelines after becoming one's ambassador. They absolutely have the power to make this happen. This wouldn't event be the first time they got someone shot in the head.
It's that the "I'm not a loser" leitmotif has been played directly before Richie dies (sung) and Ruth dies (in the accompaniment). And then they sing it right before this scene!!
It's that the "I'm not a loser" motif itself is just an exaggerated Dies Irae, AKA the musical representation of death, and Pete is the one who first introduced the motif.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(and once again, they sing it right before this scene!)
It's that you don't even consider Max saving him as a possibility because why would he want to stop this? He wants Pete dead. In the chaos of the moment, you don't stop to think about how letting Pete die would kill him too.
It's that everything lines up so perfectly and then as a cherry on top Joey and Mariah are delivering these lines like their lives depend on it.
It's just so fucking devastating.
