The Bear and the Nightingale
Tumblr media
Author: Katherine Arden
Published by: Penguin Random House UK
Pages: 456
Format: Paperback
My Rating ★★★1/2
Beware the evil in the woods…
In a village at the edge of the wilderness of northern Russia, where the winds blow cold and the snow falls many months of the year, an elderly servant tells stories of sorcery, folklore and the Winter King to the children of the family, tales of old magic frowned upon by the church.
But for the young, wild Vasya these are far more than just stories. She alone can see the house spirits that guard her home, and sense the growing forces of dark magic in the woods…
My thoughts:
The Bear and the Nightingale is a wonderfully atmospheric book with a mixture of history, religion and Russian folklore at the heart of the story.
It transports the reader back to medieval Russia, to a place thick with forests and deep crisp glistening snow.
This story focuses on a young woman named Vasya who takes her first breaths of life as her mother takes her last. Vasya holds the ability to see spirits surrounding her small town, and is a really fascinating character. As a young woman, Vasya is free to do as she pleases most of the time. Over time she develops a bond with the horses, speaking to them and whispering until they grow to trust her enough to come to her willingly. As friendly as Vasya can be, she is a force of nature, filled with determination, strength and aptitude, while also holding a strong family bond. The loss of her mother has inevitably weakened her place in the family, and at times she feels alone in the world, but this does not stop the young heroine from showing that she is truly willing to do whatever is necessary to protect them.
There was certainly something magical about having this novel set in the dead of winter with the old gods circling the dimly lit sleepy cottage, and despite being a little slow in places, I enjoyed the writing style. Arden uses absolutely beautiful imagery throughout, leaving you feeling completely transported to a new world of complex characters and interesting plots.
The imagery and vivid description is just wonderful; the characters leap off the page, and the storyline is layered and complex. However, I must admit I did find the pacing sometimes just a bit too sluggish. This is definitely a book that should be read slowly and with patience in order to really make the most of it. I struggled here and there with identifying the tricky names of the characters, and because of this I found it slightly difficult to keep track of who each person was, and began to kind of lose interest in what was going on. Of course, this is no fault of the author’s, I think it just partly diminished my overall enjoyment of the book.
As a result, I feel I can only fairly give this one a rating of three and a half stars.
Overall, The Bear and the Nightingale absolutely is a magical and atmospheric read, and I enjoyed it for the most part. I can see why this book has proved so popular with many readers. Unfortunately, it just didn’t quite hold my interest as much as I was hoping it might.
Overall reaction:

Like Pinocchio he wished to be a boy. Like Pinocchio he was lead astray, though in his case by the Fey. Be careful when playing baseball with strangers as the ballpark may not be what it seems to you. This was an experimental piece. The crosshatching did not create the effect I had hoped. Done with @sharpie fineliners and @crayola washable markers. #marchofrobots2020 #marchofrobots #fairytaletwist #robot #folklore (at THG StarDragon Publishing) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9PcAFiJTh9/?igshid=1r9flnrw3b23h

#BookReview Its Neil Fucking Gaiman so I'll admit a little bias; I love just about everything he is involved with. If you've read Snow, Glass, Apples you'll find The Sleeper and The Spindle similar however much lighter in feel. Both are a #fairytaleretelling however The Sleeper and the Spindle melds Snow White and Sleeping Beauty in a way that is fresh and unique. Where SGA was disturbing and monstrous TSaTS focuses on choice and agency. This isn't a graphic novel more of an illustrated fairy tale. Chris Riddell's ink drawings are exquisite in their detail and gorgeous in execution. I could honestly see myself flipping through this book over and over just to admire the artwork. 5/5 Thanks again to @bookswithscrump for the suggestion. #FairyTaleTwist #strongfemaleprotaganist #GaimanFan #sleepingbeauty #snowwhite #nerdymama #nerdybooks #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CIrG-2LgKvo/?igshid=umnovo03ymcv

Day 2: “New Groups”
A tube lays empty next to the sink. A girl looks down at her hands. “Dammit,” she thinks. “Should've worn gloves.”
The hair dye stains her hands a bright red - the bathroom looks like a murder scene - she’s the culprit. The girl looks up at semi-stained mirror and smiles. She did a good job, even if it’s her first time and made a huge mess. It’s not her fault that gramps, despite telling him “I going to do it anyway,” forbade it. She doesn’t blame him; he doesn’t want to deal with raising another child again. But she needs this. She needs to distance herself from what had happened.
The bitter old man was the only one that would take her after Mom and Dad passed. He lives all the way in Florida though, so she had to leave her childhood home and friends. Maybe it’s for the best though; it’s hard for her to be in that house all alone. The house was always quiet, but without them it seems even quieter. She’d like to have finished out high school at home, but the newly-red-haired girl understands that that’s impossible. She considers herself pretty patient, but it sure would be a hell of a lot easier if the old man would get off her dick (metaphorically speaking). I mean, she bought the dye herself, and she’s going to clean up obviously. She isn’t a savage.
And clean up she does, and then proceeds to sit in the floral couch facing the front door so the old man can see her and the “taboo” thing she’d done right when he gets home. But something catches her eye as she stares down the front door. On the bookshelf next to the door are, obviously, books. But not just any books. It’s filled top to bottom with self-help books, with titles like “How to Make Friends for Dummies” and “Positive Thinking: Paving Your Way to Success.”
Teenagers are inherently self-centered, so it only just dawns on her that the old man is just as alone as she is - probably even more so. Leira still has her friends, but all of his are dead or too far in the past to grab hold of and find again. Maybe the all the medicine he takes before going to work isn’t just for pain or whatever old people deal with (most likely constipation). Her hard face softens, and she wants to tell him that she understands and she knows, or at least semi-knows, what he’s feeling.
He walks through the front door and she immediately pulls his frail, wrinkled body into a tight hug. They’re both hurt by the loss of her parents, “But maybe,” she thinks, “Maybe we can make a family out of just the two of us.”
