miss anthro’s film recs: May 2021
Jurassic Park 1993: Watched this for the third time in a month today to celebrate it's release 28 years ago. Like most excellent films, it was created by a lucky intersection of talent. The remarkable premise was crafted into a brilliant script by David Koepp and author Michael Crichton; it was tight, clean, fast-paced - no plot holes and unnecessary scenes. Steven Spielberg really did a fantastic job of making a cohesive production and giving it a kind of emotional continuity. The cast is outstanding. I could write an essay about each one. Richard Attenborough brings pathos to John Hammond, the delusional tycoon. Sam Neill is perfect as Alan Grant, a jaded paleontologist who finds deeper compassion. Laura Dern gives a raw performance as the resolute and charming paleo-botanist Ellie Sattler. Jeff Goldblum stars as Ian Malcolm, chaotician and prototype "rock-star scientist." Bob Peck is wonderful as the sensible game warden Robert Muldoon. Samuel L. Jackson works his magic as sardonic chief engineer Ray Arnold. And of course, excellent performances from Martin Ferrero, Wayne Knight, Joseph Mazzello, and Ariana Richards. The special and physical effects are remarkable and most of them remain so nearly three decades later, including the life-sized animatronic Tyrannosaurus rex and just the right amount of CGI. Cinematography by Dean Cundey features god-tier-level use of scale framing. Not to mention great use of color, blocking, sound, costume, John Williams' beautiful score - you name it, this film really has everything going for it. Is this a perfect film? No, but it gets bloody close. Unmissable science-fiction that examines the horror unleashed by the arrogance of mankind.
The Birdcage 1996: This 25* year old film is a real gem. While the modern viewer (myself included) could find fault with some stereotypes, etc., the classic comedy has aged quite well. There’s a lot of slapstick and hysterically funny and clever dialogue. Williams and Lane are outstanding. There’s a very touching scene between the two of them which is very romantic and sweet. And of course the whole cast is perfect. I’m always impressed by this film when I haven’t seen it in a while.
The Moon-Spinners 1964: You don’t need to be a Disney fan to love this incredible classic. Hayley Mills is well loved but I don’t think she’s given enough credit for being not only a brilliant child actor but also a great actor as she aged. Her performance is stellar. The whole movie is fun and tense, bringing Mary Stewart’s novel to life in the great and beautiful country of Greece. It’s a fun adventure from start to finish with humor and romance.
Fairytale: A True Story 1997: Want to cry your eyes out about the Cottingley fairy hoax of 1917? You may not trust me but I recommend this experience. Honestly, this movie is life-changing. This is a depiction of a real life story involving historical figures. Usually no one gets that quite right but this movie kinda does. Peter O’Toole looks nothing like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but Harvey Keitel looks remarkably like Harry Houdini. Something about the music and what they do with this story gets into your bloodstream. I couldn’t possibly spoil for anyone who knows nothing about it, but I can say that there is some incredible CGI and a scene where someone faces retribution from an unexpected and shocking source.
edit 2023:
*now 27
I found this in my drafts. Clearly, life got in the way and I didn’t continue my recommendation posts (I have the templates drafted in text form.) Also, while drafting this edit I was attacked by a small beetle. I remain unharmed and have released the beetle into its natural environment.

Sanji tells only child appropriate stories, which sound a lot like Captain Usopps adventures. He does not like bringing up other memories, I think those... just hurt.
#one piece#vinsmoke sanji#zosan#roronoa zoro#omegaverse#I think he is torn between it hurting too much + framing these as bedtime stories for the little one#so they are never completely true or quite right#more like fairytales#I think the kids are in for a surprise once they actually meet the strawhats - especially cause I think they changed quite a bit

Can you imagine how fucking mad Littlefinger's dad must have been? Imagine carefully creating a friendship with the Lord Paramount of the Trident to the point he graciously decides to foster your son at his castle. Only for the little bastard to mess it all up by proposing to his eldest daughter whose one son away from heir and is already engaged to another Lord Paramount's heir, who he tries to duel and fails miserably.
#anytime i hear that tiktok sound “let me get this straight dumbass you have a fully reloaded-”i think of them#littlefinger#soda speaks#asoaif#a song of ice and fire#i get its an inverse of the fairytale love story of the scrappy poor boy true love winning over a maiden#but dear god petyr what was the plan there?

I’m not saying I’ve never done it before, but the “pssshhhhttt that’s not very realistic” arguments in entertainment are so annoying.
No crap. I don’t want to watch a movie about you waking up and scratching your butt and going to sit in your cubicle and coming home and watching The Office reruns while you eat Mexican takeout.
I want stories that are funny, insane, grand. Compelling. It doesn’t have to be “realistic” it just has to make you believe by its own magic. That’s what I want. There’s a reason the oldest stories that have survived time are epics
#like shut up and watch titanic or twister or the mummy and enjoy it dammit#I mean cmon the princess bride is arguably one of the best movies ever made#and it doesn’t have to be all fairytales#when Harry met sally is top notch romance story telling#like bro. true intellectualism requires an appreciation for good storytelling#I cannot stand pseudointellectualism

one thing i haven't seen brought up yet re: the Crown is Jax and Gill's claim of being royalty is because of their father's story about how once a generation one person in their family has the crown shaped birthmark (them both having it at their father's insistence is later questioned when Coco notes Gill's looks like a brand, implying she wasn't born with it and her father put it there, or neither of them actually were born with it and it's complete crap) and that they're descended from Vacuo's royal bloodline
well now we have someone in Vacuo who actually knew the last Queen of Vacuo and could confirm/deny the veracity of that claim
#RWBY#the twins were raised on an 'all fairytales are true' mentality#and their father even has a copy of Fairytales of Remnant with Oz's notes#which means they'd be aware of the Infinite Man story (which is about Oz)#and of course as the last King of Vale he has an eye-witness account on how true their claim is

Lemme see if I’m getting this right
Giles missed the lesson and asked around for the homework / what other people were doing and copied it, Milton slapped his name on it as if it was a group project and then when he saw someone do it better than Giles he stole their paper
#mmk yup#this probably doesn’t make sense#but like yk how the og Grimm brothers just kinda#didn’t actually come up with any fairytales#and wilhelm didn’t actually write the stories just edited them#and then in eah Milton (who is wilhelm idc) takes credit for other fairytales#and acts like#the fairygodmother in Cinderella#and true loves kiss in Snow White#were his stories#when they were actually Perrault’s/other authors versions#eah#ever after high#milton grimm#giles grimm#wilhelm grimm#jacob grimm#brothers grimm

i think they’re just fun little coincidences, but the way nghy’s story so far is filled with the experiences of past cec couples is just so cute!!
like the sporty childhood friend romance of kthn
and the initial turned down confession
and “what is love??” crisis (and consequential realisation of feelings) of mochiaka
and the long-distance (for the sake of their dreams) unrequited love of the harucouple
and that’s not even getting into the dynamic parallels between nghy and other couples, which may be kind of a stretch, if i’m being honest so i’m not including them, since their stories all written by the same crew, so there’s bound to be some overlap there
it’s kind of like hw has written a couple made up of their favourite bits from their prior pairs, whether intentionally or not, and i’m all for it tbh~~~ i’m sure there’re still more (perhaps accidental?) callbacks to come, considering how early we are in nghy’s story, so let’s watch their little fairytale unfold together!!
let nghy be the clichéd couple to end all clichéd couples!!!!!!!!
#their fairytale heroine x prince thing is also super cute…#though. come to think of it. aside from some gen 1 illustrations from years back we haven’t had a true fairytale couple yet right?#sure there was like romeo and julieta but that was just sena acting with lxl. poor girl#but dynamic-wise i think if you squint and tilt your head past 90 degrees to the side…#nghy could be seen as being similar to the cute yapper/cool listener dynamics of natsuyuu and jurikou#and there’s ofc the jealous guy x cute track girl of kthn… but they’re still different bc hina was actually aware of kotachan’s feelings#and maybe kiiiiind of a little ‘popular guy who only wants 1 girl’ x literal wallflower of harucouple in middle school…? if you squint???#but then again i did say it was quite a stretch so i won’t give too much thought to it#devotion-wise nagisa is as devoted to hiyori as. like. most of the other hw dudes since they’re all whipped for their gfs/wives#(except yukki but that’s prolly only bc his second love story has just begun. they aren’t even dating yet but im sure he’ll join in soon)#eheheheheheheheheeeee if they continue the mochiaka/harucouple slowburn hybrid i hope we get to see a character song from shiranami hiyori—#i hope that day will come~~~~~~~~~~~~~~#either way live laugh love nghy!!!!!!#the dude from gamushara

Foehn
I can draw again!!!
#i was gonna make a comic of her getting invited to dance by that one guy in love with her but I managed to stop myself#lolol I don't even know their personalities yet beyond superficial stuff. the guy doesn't even have a face yet#i keep making comics whenever I feel like it which is why I have many comic wips that are no longer part of the story let's not make more#Foehn is my tall strong lady who would very much love to get the fairytale princess treatment#i didn't give him a prince but the guy I will give her is overflowing with princely aura. and he genuinely loves her so. close enough#i need to learn how to draw muscles so the contrast between foehn's reality (strong hero of rebellion)#and her dream (a domestic life and happily ever after with her one true love) are evident#despite her physic preventing her from finding her true love (she doesn't know that the guy is in love with her) she doesn't hate her body#it's a strong body that allowed her to protect the people she loves.

#part of the delight of our flag means death is that in many aspects it really is the gay fairytale we all wanted growing up#think about it#the focus isn’t what would logically be able to happen in a given moment#but rather what’s needed to drive the story forward emotionally#you’re in a magic coma and all that can break the spell is true loves kiss?#good thing your prince is here right the fuck out of nowhere to wake you up and carry you off!#you finally understands himself and is ready to finally claim his own happiness?#good job! here’s your entire crew that you found with a row boat in the middle of the ocean#does it make sense?#abso-fucking-lutely not but who cares#art#ofmd#our flag means death#edward teach#fanart#stede bonnet#blackbeard#ofmd fanart#blackbonnet#elliartpost#mockup#storybook#old art#gentlebeard
