“Her Radiant Curse”, by Elizabeth Lim

I read this book from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

“Her Radiant Curse” is the prequel to the “Six Crimson Cranes” bilogy but it can be read as a standalone for it tells the story of the stepmother of Shiori, the protagonist of said bilogy when she was young. Also, unlike the first book of the bilogy and its sequel, this prequel is not based in a fairytale (that I know of) but it is consistent in the eastern Asian folklore and legends being interwoven with the main plot.

Channari was only four when her mother gave birth to the most beautiful sister she could have given her. Baby Vanna was born with a special light in her heart that shines and mesmerizes everyone who lays eyes upon her. But Channi’s mama’s labor had complications and with her life hanging on a thread, her husband Adah, decides to sacrifice one of his daughters to the demon-tiger Angma to save mama’s life. Instead of the beautiful Vanna, Adah takes Channi to the forest, but the tiger wanted the radiant baby, so to punish the father he turns Channi into a half human half snake girl, that is the curse that won’t break until either Channi or the tiger are dead. It was all for nothing, before dying, mama makes her full moon girl, Channi, promise that she will protect Vanna always.

Of course everyone despises and bullies Channi, who is only supported and protected by the snake realm. She becomes a lonely hunter, chasing tigers for Angma has threatened to kill Vanna when she turns 16. Who is the one who is really cursed? What is the light that shines from Vanna’s heart?

This is a story of love and betrayal, hate and loyalty. Snakes, tigers, dragons, sister love and abandonment. It is a story of growth and finding our own path, our own adventures in life. Despite its brilliant fairytail-esque writing I did not enjoy this book as much as Shiori’s journey. Its value lies in a much needed backstory for Raikama or Channi, the witch who could talk to snakes. Although she is redeemed in the second book “The Dragon’s Promise” in which Elizabeth Lim gives us a glimpse of Raikama’s past, we needed the full story to truly understand why she behaves the way she does in “Six Crimson Cranes” and why does she keep her distance from Shiori.

In the end I did have fun with this book no matter what. Perhaps the reason why I felt it less compelling than the other books is that “Six Crimson Cranes” did an amazing job at making me feel whatever Shiori felt, especially her desperation and her frustration. I couldn’t quite feel the same with Channi.

I wrote Maria's fairitale ending from just what I gathered from my conversation with @laurasimonsdaughter about her post on russian shapeshifting dragons because I just couldn't find the story to read as fast as my heart wanted me to right the wrongs done to Maria.

Right about after posting, I got to read the actual original story and I have to say, I gave Ivan too much credit in my story...

I'd just add @only-by-the-stars! You're gonna flip with the variety she has. Fluff, angst, spice? You'll find it!

From the top of my jead I'd really recommend "Song of a Champion" for some top notch Mipha centric reteling; "These Tadks Three" for the fluffiest pinning ever; "A Most Promising Arragement" for THE BEST idiots-in-love you'll ever read; and she also has a good amount of stories based of fairitales that are amazing.

I'm vastly interested in this pairing and have looked quite widely into written well fanworks and lovely art styles! Though, I don't think I'm looking far enough...

Are there any suggested Artists/Art and Fan Writes that anyone can kindly recommend me into viewing?? 🤔☺️❤️💙

Sims is a good writer, and a spiteful one.

He let listeners choose how real Jonmartin was and then he made it unmistakably obvious how in love they were.

Now.

In the same way he has left up to us to think fabric rustles are kisses or not. He could have done the same, proving us aggressively right or wrong: He could have had any character dropping a line about "keeping kisses to a minimum, boys" or "are really kisses appropriate in the apocalypse?" or Helen saying "kiss again!". He didn't. So he very much chose to leave the kisses out.

I'm forced to believe one of two things: John doesn't like kissing (or Martin doesn't, or neither)

Or it is plot relevant.

We all know some fairitale stories end curses with a kiss, a token of love, and it is a very strong tool if he uses it with a twist. The Eye doesn't allow any comforting memories, so maybe every time they kiss John forgets the whole situation that led to the kiss. Maybe the kiss would become whatever Martin made instead of tea. Sims will think of something better. I won't even try to guess what twist, but those are my two cents: the absence of kisses might be plot relevant.

Like, can we talk about Oscar reciting fairitales to Ozpin just to pass time? T

A this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ozpin finally manifested physically and they shared a hug.

Because they’re doing everything I’ve wanted already, that would be the cherry on top. It has to happen, eventually, right? XD I need a hug for my platonic OTP the way I need kisses for my romantic ones!

And I LOVE that JUST RIGHT when Ozpin was ready to give up on Oscar’s plan, it came to fruition.

This boy is truly Oz’s hope. I’m so emotional. I wanna hear Ozpin’s thoughts after all of this is done.

But, I will be quite mad, not gonna lie, if Ozpin’s theme in the credit is a sort of send off for the character and we’re not gonna hear his voice anymore, after Oscar’s feat of magic (also congratulations, son, you killed your first actual human being. Wow, what a season of trauma this has been!). I want the merge to happen as much as Oscar wants it lol, and I still hold for the hope that it isn’t actually going to happen or it isn’t gonna be as bad.

Pls, crwby. Today I have finally worn normal shoes instead of my usual clown ones. If you give me an oshupin hug, my shoes will become super stylish and shiny. If the two of them merge and Ozpin is forever gone, and Shannon isn’t gonna appear anymore, it’s back in the clown car for me and I don’t know if I could get out.
