Wooohooo!!! I just finished The Sea of Monsters!!!
Man, this book is such a fun read. I love, love, love that the plot had Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson traveling through water because it really gave Percy's nautical powers a chance to shine. None of the other books return to the sea as much as The Sea of Monsters does, which makes sense for the over-arching plots, but it is a bit of a loss. Placing the Son of the Sea God in a Sea of Monsters really just is the perfect setting and it makes for a really fun plot.
Reading The Sea of Monsters is definitely the most fun I've had with reading in a long time. The last time I felt this excited to read was a couple of months ago when I reread Feels Like We Only Go Backwards by oldpotatoe on AO3 (it is an absolute banger of a fanfiction. I highly recommend it to anyone, especially Zukka fans, but truly, it's good enough for anyone to enjoy). Before that, I hadn't picked up a book in months.
But now? I feel so excited to keep reading that it's taking everything in me to not immediately dive into The Titan's Curse. But alas, I have school and responsibilities, etc. (Blah, adulthood is the worst. Please transport me back to the time when I was so eager to read, that I would constantly get in trouble for reading in class).
But the important thing is, my love for reading has returned. Reading is pure magic. There are words on paper that transport you to a different realm where there are rainbow fish-horses who can talk, sirens waiting to tempt you to your doom, and a magical golden fleece powerful enough to bring a girl back from the dead.
I realized in my blog post about The Lightning Thief, that I didn't mention Luke. While this was just forgetfulness on my part (I was writing it at 5 am. This time I am writing it at the very reasonable time of 11 pm), I'm actually glad I didn't write about him because Luke has a much more active role in The Sea of Monsters.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Luke is the definition of a sympathetic villain. Every time he's in a scene, I can feel the hurt radiating off of him, and I understand how he was so easily manipulated by Kronos. The Olympians have done nothing but torment Luke. How can he be expected to resist the temptation to replace the Olympians with a new reigning power- one Luke has been misled to believe will be fair?
I suppose this is where the hero aspect comes in: Percy has every reason to hate the Olympians as much as Luke- Hades held his mother captive as bait, Ares tricked him into possessing Zeus' Lightning Bolt, Poseidon fails to show up for him- but Percy stands strong against Kronos' evil anyways.
However, Percy's automatic refusal to consider if the Olympians are worth fighting for is naive, and it fails him as a protagonist until The Last Olympian. If I remember correctly, Percy doesn't truly understand Luke's perspective until the final battle, but when he finally does, he is so moved by it, that he finishes advocating for Luke's cause when he demands the gods take responsibility for claiming their children.
The reason Percy is unwilling to consider Luke's point of view is because of Luke's betrayal, and yet without Luke's betrayal, there wouldn't be a serious point of view to consider. Though, this is where I am going to end my discussion on Percy and his relationship with betrayal. I have decided I will analyze it after The Last Olympian, and then again after The Mark of Athena, specifically so I can talk about Nico's betrayal because I believe Percy's interactions with Nico afterward provide the best material for understanding Percy and his attitude towards betrayal.
Oh, and speaking of Nico, I miss him so goddamn much. I didn't notice in The Lightning Thief, probably because the story focuses so much on world-building rather than character development, but I did notice Nico's absence in The Sea of Monsters. Perhaps it is my affection for him (he was the first character who made me feel like it was okay to be queer), but the Percy Jackson World feels a little incomplete without its gay brooding anti-hero. The good news is he shows up in the next book, The Titan's Curse!
Speaking of side characters, Annabeth is a much more fleshed-out character in The Sea of Monsters as compared to The Lightning Thief. In particular, I think the Siren's Bay scene is a major turning point for her character. She now has her own motivations, beyond just wanting to do good and help Percy, and the audience learns about her fatal flaw. She feels real, not just a prop to help Percy on his adventures. I'm very excited to see her character continue to grow and develop.
Another side character I really liked is Clarisse. I will always empathize with a character who is pressured by her parents to succeed at all costs. It was very satisfying to see her get her hero's ending.
Ok, I definitely think this counts as a blog post about The Sea of Monsters, even if there was a fair bit of future The Last Olympian analysis too. I'm excited to continue my adventure of reading the Riordanverse. The Titan's Curse is next!!
As always, TLDR: The Sea of Monsters is fun, Percy and Luke are narrative foils, and Annabeth and Clarisse have great character development.
Oh, and in case anyone is interested, this post is about 950 words. Brain zoomies will have you doing the silliest things sometimes.

it’s that time of year again… 🎄🎅🎉🎊 no. the highlights of your 2023 media consumption of course! just like last year, i want to know your top 5 films, books, tv shows, songs/albums, pop culture moments if that’s your thing, and as a bonus: any favourite personal moment/achievement in the last year? new to you, new in release, either works! can’t wait to see your response and wishing you a happy new year! 😁🩷
yay!! i was so excited to receive this in my inbox again this year 💖 overall i feel like i consumed less media than last year? but here's a roundup of some of my favorite things this year:
movies
so most of the movies i really really enjoyed this year didn't actually come out this year lol but i really enjoyed:
skinamarink - i love horror and while this one might be too much of a slowburn for people, it really filled me with dread so yay!
birdman (or the unexpected virtue of ignorance) - i'd been meaning to get around to this one for a while and finally did! totally worth it. the writing and acting: immaculate!
stop making sense - one thing about me is i will enjoy a music doc. the energy in this is so so wonderful. i love david byrne, i love talking heads. left the theatre in a great mood
saltburn - a controversial pick probably. but i had fun! don't really care for the criticisms that it fails at being class critique. it's about being a little pathetic freak and wanting to crawl into someone else's skin for me.
crash (the cronenberg one) - another one i'd been meaning to get around to for a while. i've seen most of cronenberg's stuff and i deeply deeply enjoyed this one. it's about sex, it's about violence, it's about desire, it's about all the weird things the human body can do. i love cronenberg and this one was perfect to me. mwah!
music
crash (charli xcx) - i know, i'm a little late. i listened to this religiously this year. having seen cronenberg's crash this year also added a little extra flavor. obsessed. love it. several songs are on my spotify on repeat as we speak.
this is why (paramore) - ahh so much fun! i love paramore, love getting a new paramore album. the remix album is great too. i also got to see them this year and had a blast! paramore was the first concert i ever went to so getting to see them again is full circle for meee.
desire, i want to turn into you (caroline polachek) - fun!! i do prefer pang but i had fun!
skylight (pinegrove) - sleepy, twangy indie album. i enjoyed! it was soothing this year.
joy as an act of resistance (idles) - the opposite of a sleepy, twangy album! i'm hoping to catch idles in the new year since they're stopping in town :)
tv
not a great tv year for me tbh
succession - succession my beloved! banger of a final season. it will go down in the annals of my favorite tv shows for the rest of all time. kendall roy you will always be famous.
adventure time - revisiting adventure time for the first time in forever. it's fun, it's sweet, i have a soft spot for it. i'm on its final season but have yet to finished because i'm emotionally attached at this point.
video games
baldur's gate - all i've done with my time lately is play baldur's gate. eat, sleep, breathe baldur's gate. i have not touched my sims in months because i have no space but for baldur's gate on my computer. finally got a ps5 and immediately got baldur's gate so that i can finally play it properly because my mac can only barely run it!!! i'm emotionally attached to my little tiefling cleric. i am already fantasizing about my next playthrough.
top me moment!
lol as for personal successes this year: i got a fellowship with a really well-recognized poetry organization in my city that i have so much love for and that truly does so much good work for our community. i have been slowly working my way through the ranks. i started as a mentee last year, taught some poetry classes for them, and this year helped run their month-long festival, and am now working directly with them to help plan their month-long festival for next year. it feels so aligned with the kind of career i'd like to have in my life. next goal is to hopefully lock-in some kind of permanent position with them once my fellowship is over. hopefully i will have good news about that in next years wrap up! thanks again for asking this, i truly get a kick out of it!!
#ahhh i can't help but write an essay#i wish i had consumed more media this year but genuinely felt like i didn't have much i was interested in?#i think potentially the writer's strike and actor's strikes may have had some influence on that#anyway thanks again for asking imo 💖#cheesehair#yearly roundup

Obligatory “what did you feel about the new episode” ask 👀💕
HI ive been out travelling and im an old man when it comes to mobile but ill try to gather my thoughts :)
Ace eating disorder represent,,, woo,,,,,, sad party blower sound,, love thst for us,,,, Holds his hand and makes out with him. Also eternally banger voice actor choice for him. Absolutely amazing performance every time he speaks.
Obligatory I love Arei. recently revamped an OC I made 5 years ago and basing a lot of her personality and stuff off of Arei. Just felt like sharing. I love Arei so much I will make her my oc methinks.
THE MOTIVES MADE ME SO FERAL I PAUSED THE VIDEOS SO MANY TIMES AND WAS LIKE AAIOGIGOGOUUGHHHH SO MANY HORRIBLE HORRIBLE FUCKED UP BLORBOS I CANT WAIT TO LEARN EVERYPONY'S SECRETS OM NOM NOM<33 Speaking of which JESUS CHRIST I really feel like the secret motives some ppl held onto, like, REALLY shouldn't have been kept to themselves omg. I'm sure there's been some behind the scenes stuff of characters gaining distaste/distrust/avoiding certain ppl after receiving certain motives;; I'm not entirely sure WHO specifically, but these are like CRAZY things to not warn the rest of the class about. Was David's the one that Arei got? Killed a man with no remorse? Huh? Shoves you pushes you shoves you into locker and swallows the key
The entire time during episode 9 I was trying and failing to open a jar of ice cream so I was a Little out of it, but from what I gather I'm really dumb and not good at mysteries so i have no clue who the hell did it. At one point I asked "alright who killed a man?" but my bestie heard "who killed min?" so I just kept saying that for the rest of the episode and crying of laughter. Guys, be honest, who killed Min- I'm not mad I just wanna know, guys-
Nico continues to piss me off a little. Teruko goes without saying she pisses me off to no end. When everyone started dragging her handwriting I was whooping and cheering and hollering it was so funny GET HER.
I liked how the two main people investigating the corpse were Arturo and Veronika. They really do get a lot of screentime together and it's starting to scare me a little. Is this like subtle ship fanservice or am I about to meet horrors beyond my comprehension as the story and cases develop. I hope one of them kills the other. They're so in love.
I also liked at one point Veronika dragging Ace's ass. They're ALSO in love btw. Yeah I'll ship my top 3 faves together, what else would you expect from me, man
Rose....<3
DAVID!!!!!!<3333 I know his ass was lying about history of depression that shit was so funny be honest bro you have unfathomable sins keep it 100% with us. If you turn out to not be fucked up or morally grey ykno I'll be a little disappointed. Just keep it real with us.
The motive that's like "where do I even start, everything about your life is worth killing for" is so funny bc if that was mine I would be like. okay. not my problem. That's so incredibly vague that means NOTHING. I'm also assuming it's Teruko's tbh, it's the only one vague and weird enough for her to be like "imma keep ot real with you chief idfk which of these are mine 🐸"
What else. I'm a little hungover
every time they brought up the fish I was like haha. like snellyfish. I'm an accomplice in Arei's murder and I didn't even know!!
kinda hashtag don't blame Hu for not telling whose motive she got bc it was a little suicide coded and very personal
That's all I'm done I forget what else happened xoxo love you all I love drdt so much--
I lied I just remembered that Eden lesbian (sapphic whatever I don't care) and laughed really hard at the idea of like. Charles opening the motive without reading the name and just thinking like "I'M A LESBIAN?????" real
Eden/Nico could be real if I didn't have a leaning negative opinion of Nico rn. I am still patient and hearing them out for now tho.
Ok Now I'm done.

i will admit i haven't listened to bjork's discography in full. i tried when i was like 15, and it just didn't click for some reason. i just didn't feel that energy, that spark, that qualitas occulta that a lot of female artists have.
i watched a music video where she was bald, shaking her head and turning into some kind of digitalized bear every few seconds & that was pretty much it for me 😭 like WHAT ARE YOU DOING. you are TOO GROWN to be doing this CAN YOU GET A GRIP.
usually, when i listen to an album, it either instantly clicks for me or clicks after disliking it on my first listen and listening it months or years later. but bjork... she's too pragmatic imo. i'm not feeling the energy. i'm not feeling the EMOTION.
i like both pop and alt, but i do lean slightly more towards catchy bubblegum pop and new wave, so maybe bjork is too alt for me and i just can't get used to it idk. it's probably because i grew up listening to late 2000s/early 2010s pop on the radio (the very basic, yet fun "hot n cold by katy perry"-type music).
and i only really started disliking gaga a few years ago.
chromatica PISSED ME OFF. genuinely one of the WORST albums of all time imo. stupid love being the turd on top a steaming pile of feces of an album. when she started selling jockstraps, condoms and lube i was officially done. like girl... have some class...
and, yes, melanie is such a bad artist omg. her music is so bland and personalityless lmfao. the only songs i like by her are pacify her and mrs. potato head & that's me being generous. her stans need to stop getting brave, especially because she's literally a rapist. and the crybaby persona was just weird, not clever.
Okay so I feel like we're on the same wavelength about a lot of things after all...
As a Björk stan, I feel people often fail to see past her eccentricity & bizarreness especially to casual listeners, but if you take the time to explore her discography, I'm certain you'll find some gems in there. She is just a very true musician through & through—she's produced most of her albums, she herself arranges all her songs for her tours now, she's invented multiple instruments & methods of composition, she's very active behind the scenes of what she writes, esp with musical production, programming, & visuals too.
Björk's collab & friendship with Arca was very notable though (esp after Arca's collabs with Kanye West, FKA twigs, & Kelela previously... which were all ICONICCC) but I do think Arca's music is far more confusing/non-palatable than Björk's... I can't get into her solo work.
Yeah the late 2000s/early 2010s had the BEST pop music of all time. Katy Perry, Rihanna, Cascada, Britney, Gaga, Ke$ha, Carly Rae Jepsen, pop Nicki Minaj etc!!! Nobody does it like that anymore. I had just started going to clubs then & I didn't realise it would be the best time of my life. I kinda see that type of pop being rehashed into what "hyperpop" is now, even though Spotify allegedly invented that term to market it (according to Caroline Polachek). Plus the prevalence of nightcore/CupcaKke remixes of older pop songs on Tiktok.
These younger elusive "hyperpop"/SoundCloud artists like Ayesha Erotica, Slayyyter, & That Kid, and even modern pop writers like Charli XCX & Tove Lo are trying to bring that hype back... maybe it's working, maybe it's not.
Chromatica had a FEW bangers, but everyone was so starved & desperate after being in lockdown for like 3 months (by May 2020) that they hyped it up wayyyyy more than what it was worth at face value. These artists are getting very bold with their merch lmao. As for Melanie... the whole baby aesthetic she adopted was way too borderline pedophilic imo... it didn't translate how she expected it to. How tf is she as famous as she is lol

Only you, darling||Wilbur x reader
Summary: Being friends with Wilbur can be a hassle but it'll always be worth it in the end.
Genre: fluff
Trope: Friends to lovers
For the sake of my followers mental health here's some fluff I wrote bc Dark red by Steve Lacy is a banger.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
College was a hassle for you but your friend, Wilbur, was always there to help you out with certain projects. You've been friends with Wilbur as long as you can remember, you could only imagine your delight when you got into the same college, it felt like you both could take in the world together.
"Wilbur please, give me a break! My brain is going to explode from your nerdiness." You complained, Wilbur's raised an eyebrow at you. "First off, that's not a word. Second, you realize the if you don't do this you're going to fail this class, right? I told you to not take this many but you're still so stubborn." Wilbur lectured. You and Wilbur were sitting on your bed while he was trying to help you with your assignments that were giving you trouble, but you were already on the verge of passing out as soon as you opened your laptop. "I know, but I was hoping that I could show you that I didn't need your help because we're getting older....I just don't want to depend on you as much anymore." You tried to explain but your words only came out as quiet mumbles, but by Wilbur's expression you could tell that he understood what you were trying to say. Before you could continue, a hand was placed on your cheek making you look up at him, "I don't mind if you ask for my help once in a while, just don't overwork yourself like that again, ok darling?" Wilbur reassured, his brushing against your lips. You noticed his eyes tracing themselves to your lips making you avoid eye contact. "Uh-Sorry.....Wanna go get coffee with me?" Wilbur said, he quickly removed his hand from your face and making you miss the warmth his hands gave, a part of you wanted to stay like that just a bit longer, but you didn't really have a choice in that. "Ah..ok, I guess." You mumbled to yourself.
On your way to the coffee shop, you slipped your hands into your pockets as you walked next to Wilbur. 'Was he going to just not acknowledge was happened in your room?' You thought to yourself, the thought alone broke your heart and Wilbur took notice of your visible worry, the tall brunette let out a sigh and pulled you into the direction of what you thought was the coffee shop but he ended up pulling you past it, which made you feel slightly anxious. "U-Uhm, Wil? We walked past the coffee sh-" "We're not going there anymore." He interrupted. You gave him a quizzical look until he stopped abruptly making you bump into his back, before you could complain to him about his sudden halt, your eyes caught the bright colors of an ice cream parlor making your eyes momentarily twinkle like a child on Christmas. "You didn't look like you weren't in the mood for coffee." He said. He gave you an apologetic look, in that moment you realized he wasn't going to talk about it.
-
Many days passed by since that happened, and days turned into months where you've started to noticed little mannerisms about Wilbur, when he's working with you on your assignments he tends to chew on the ends of his pens, he often fumbles with his hair when he's embarrassed which you found kinda cute, his eyes lightes up brighter than the northern lights when he talked about things that he loves which you would gladly listen to.
"Y/n? You're staring again." Wilbur groans, you let out a frustrated sigh. "If I'm boring you that much then I really shouldn't be here." He teased, you playfully rolled your eyes making the boy chuckle. You sat on your bed criss cross applesauce with your laptop infront of you while Wilbur was laying on his stomach with a few books and a pencil scattered around him, you sat in comfortable silence while you felt a strong sense of deja vu wash over you.
Ever since Wilbur almost kissed you a few months ago you started looking at him differently, and he would have to be dense to not notice your change in attitude towards him. Unfortunately for you, Wilbur wasn't an idiot in the slightest, "Alright, let me have it." He sighed, gesturing to his chest as if he was waiting for you to hit him. You let out a soft, "Huh?" Confused at his sudden shift in focus, "You're mad at me for not mentioning what happened a few months ago." Wilbur deadpanned, you were not ready for this conversation but it was either you handling it now or it never being brought up again. "Wilbur, what the hell! I'm not mad, I'm just confused." You sighed, Wilbur gave you a patient nod as if to let you know he was listening. "Do you like me? You keep send me mixed messages everytime we talk, its so bad that I barely even look you in your eyes because I know that I'll get lost them." You ranted. The more you vented your feelings to him, the more you heard yourself and what you were saying, who were you even mad at? By the looks of it you were gushing to your best friend about how much he made you want kiss him and he was just sitting there with an amused smirk as he watched you slowly realize your feelings for him, and it wall boiled down to a few words.
"I'm inlove with my best friend."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is as fluffy as it gets, this fic feels lukewarm to me but that's bc I'm not used to making fluff.

ik this isn't she-ra related but ur main blogs asks aren't open 😳😳 n e wey, thoughts on folklore?? i wanna hear ur favorite songs, favorite lines, any parts that gave u chills, all the good stuff
Someone asking me about Taylor Swift? Someone asking my thoughts about Taylor Swift?! Someone actually wanting to hear what I have to say about Taylor Swift? I feel like Entrapta back in season one when she was asked about her theories about Etheria and was she excited to show everyone her model.
Before I dive in, I want to apologize that it took me so long to get this to ask. I’ve been swamped trying to keep up with summer classes and I wrote several versions of this post only to have tumblr delete it and make me start over before I had the bright idea to write it on a google doc first so I didn’t lose all my work and that is the draft you are reading now! But, for authenticity reasons, after I saw this ask I scrambled to write what I could remember from my first album listen that took place at exactly 11pm (after I watched and cried to the cardigan video, of course). Here there are in note form:
I cannot believe that in the darkest timeline that Taylor Alison Swift dropped a surprise album with sixteen songs in an entirely different genre (the heart attack I had when I learned folklore was a genre shift; I cannot believe I doubted the song writing legend herself). The album has been out for a week and I kid you not the only reason I know I didn’t make it up or dream it is because this album is far more beautiful than I could’ve ever come up with. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve listened to it. Everything about the album- the lyrics, the topics, the genre, the production- speaks my language fluently. Even during the first listen I felt that I had somehow known these songs my whole life despite their raw newness.
This might read weird, but I think one of my favorite aspects about the album is how voyeuristic it feels to listen to. I don't mean sexually, but rather the way it feels like I don't have full permission to be looking at the lives of the people she is singing about. It's as if Taylor said, "I know you want to peek behind the curtain and see all my flaws" so she dives into these characters who are very flawed people and is so raw and honest as she takes their place saying almost "I will treat them like you treat me."
Yet at the same time, it's her most grounded album. There's something so shiny about pop music (I'm not knocking it, I love pop music, life's too short not to) but this is as if Taylor's pop mentality was left out in the rain and rusted. There's something so real and familiar about it. Like you can reach out and hold it in your hand.
It's venturing too far into the forest and stepping into another dimension and living in it for sixteen songs. A dimension of mysticism, nihilism, magic, and mistakes.
Here is my track-by-track list of favorite things/ chill moments/ awestruck moments.
the 1- WHAT AN ALBUM OPENER. This song rips my heart out and stomps on it. "You know the greatest loves of all time are over now" Why does lyric make me wanna break down and have the most cathartic cry? The defeated acceptance of it all is gut wrenching. "In my defense I have none" Taylor's turn it phrase on this album is brilliant and I aspire to this level of word cleverness.
cardigan- the slow buildup of this song pure magic. If you don't scream "Cause I knew everything when I was young!" at the top of your lungs when listening to this song, are you really a cardigan stan?
the last great american dynasty- F. Scott Fitzgerald who? No, I only know Miss Taylor Swift. Seriously, this song isn't even four minutes long and it's better than any novel written about the American dream. Also, "and then it was bought by me" Taylor you cannot just drop that bombshell on me without letting me get emotionally prepared.
exile ft. bon iver- a song crafted in heaven. Somehow it makes me both depressed and provides me serotonin. I can't get enough of the lyric "I'm not your problem anymore/ so who am I offending?" FUCK THAT'S GOOD. THE SONG IS SO GOOD. SMASH THAT REPEAT BUTTON. I could drown in this song.
my tears ricochet- by far my favorite on the album, and my favorite number five track. I don’t think there’s another Taylor Swift I relate to as much as this one. This hits a very, very close to a personal place for me. Right at the center of an open wound. And god, the build up. It just makes the emotional experience that more poignant. “And I can anywhere I want, anywhere I want, just not home.” I got chills the first time I listened to that lyric, and it brings tears to my eyes. Needless to say, I’ve had some good cries to this song.
mirrorball- this track is about as cutting as they come. The Imposter Syndrome anthem. It’s the “everything that comes from me has to be perfect, to make up for the fact that it’s from me” song. It’s the sense that nothing you do is worth doing if there’s no audience, yet the audience is the biggest threat. “I’ve never been a natural, I’ll do is try, try, try.” Yeah. There’s a reason this is the TS album I relate to the most.
seven- I keep saying these songs are so beautiful, but god, this one. Her vocals, the lyrics; in my opinion, a defining moment on the album. The driving home of the point that stories are important because we tell them. It’s a story plagued by a narrator who’s too young to understand and can only put the pieces together as she’s looking back. “And I’ve been meaning to tell you/ I think your house is haunted/ your dad is always mad and that must be why.” I almost can’t handle that. The loss of childhood innocence and the longing for it in just three minutes and twenty eight seconds.
august- “REMEMBER WHEN I PULLED UP AND SAID GET IN THE CAR AND THEN CANCELED MY PLANS JUST IN CASE YOU CALL/ BACK WHEN I WAS LIVING FOR THE HOPE OF IT ALL, FOR THE HOPE OF IT ALL/ MEET ME BEHIND THE MALL!” currently trying to learn this on guitar, which is fun because I’m not much of a singer. Also, I think that Betty and this girl should ditch James and date each other, if you’re of the interpretation that James is a cishet guy.
this is me trying- So I know that this is a song about a woman struggling with an alcohol addiction, but I really relate to this song because it just feels so much like my struggle with mental illnesses and the way my potential died so quickly because of that struggle. “I was so ahead of the curve/ the curve became a sphere/ fell behind all my classmates/ and I ended up here.” yep. that’s about it.
illicit affairs- again, the build up. “Don’t call me kid! Don’t call me baby! Look at this godforsaken mess that you made me!” Gotta scream that everytime. Also are we going to talk about the lines “Take the words for what they are/ a dwindling mercurial high/ a drug that only worked/ the first few hundred times” ? because I cannot stop thinking about it, or any of the lyrics for that matter.
invisible string-Joe Alwyn, do you know one of the most beautiful songs in history was written about you? I love the instrumental on this one. Also, it’s just flat out brilliant. “Bad was the blood of the song in the cab on your first trip to L.A” Holy shit. Also, “cold was the steel of my axe to grind for the boys who broke my heart/ now I send their babies presents.” You know what that is? Growth.
mad woman-while my tears ricochet takes the spot as my favorite, this is the Taylor Swift song I claim above all others. “Every time you call me crazy, I get more crazy/ what about that?” This song is at the intersection, however coincidental, of my identity as a mentally ill woman. It’s also extreme vindication the way she calls out women acting as double agents of the patriarchy. A scathing criticism of patriarchal socialization and the way women are punished for reacting to anything.
epiphany- listen to this song after watching the news. lay down. assume fetal position. try not to cry. fail and sob. wash, rinse, repeat.
betty- the old taylor can’t come to the phone right now cause she’s chewing out james for cheating on betty. *wink* However, she will write a folksy banger that’s very old taylor where James takes accountability for their mistake. I love the wlw interpretations of the love triangle songs, and I also can totally see James as a he/him lesbian.
peace-the disembodied feel of this song is so unique to Taylor’s sound but I totally dig it! This is the album of a woman in her thirties, and I hope it paves the way to more women being able to stay within the industry getting older. There’s a maturity here that is the result of having created so many albums and having found her voice.
hoax- Time to go scream off the edge of a cliff in solidarity. An open closer that rivals the defeatism of the opener, a slow descent into madness that has followed a trauma. “You know it still hurts from scars from when they pulled me apart/ but what you did was just as dark/ darling, this was just hard/ as when they pulled me apart.” Literally no words. I’m always left speechless.
If you’ve ever thought “I like Taylor but I don’t like her music because she did country and now does pop” this is the album you need to take a chance on. I can only dream of one day possessing Taylor’s ability to tell stories and this album will stick with you in all the best ways. The reason Taylor Swift can genre jump the way she does so seamlessly is because of her unrivaled strength as a songwriter. Stream folklore on spotify!!!!!!!!!
This is probably much more than you asked for, but I hope it satisfies! Thank you for letting me gush about Taylor and this album!!!!!! Sorry it took me so freaking long! If you have thoughts, I would LOVE to hear them!
#AHHHHH SOMEONE LET ME TALK ABOUT TAYLOR I'M SO GRATEFUL AND I'M SO SORRY IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO WRITE THIS#folklore#seriously i could write books about this album#I didn't even really write all my thoughts lol#tried to water em down#;)#seriously tho - stream folklore

TAYLOR SWIFT - YOU NEED TO CALM DOWN
[3.65]
The one that's on our mind, 365, all the time...
Will Rivitz: The Singles Jukebox -- Corrections, June 21 2019: The author of this blurb has previously stated that the selection of Meghan Trainor as LA Pride headliner would forever be the nadir of Pride-related programming. The author regrets the error. [1]
Joshua Copperman: The discourse for "ME!": "What does this mean for Taylor's next era?" The discourse for this lyrical clusterfuck: "What does this mean at all?" It's a much more interesting production, without stock horns and with some nice "Royals"-y vocal layering, but it's the most incoherent thing she's ever released. Is it about stans? Is it about homophobes? Is it a coming out song? Did Taylor throw the first shade at Stonewall? What is HAPPENING?? I'm sorry, I need to calm down. [3]
Will Adams: Taylor said "Gay Rights!" Kind of! Sort of. Well... it's complicated. Not necessarily because of her status as a cis straight woman, but because the message itself is so damn muddled. Stans and trolls and bigots and music journalists are lumped in the same mass of "haters," and while it's worth noting that this by no means the first anti-haters pop song to exist, the overt political text here results in lots of crossed wires. The song suffers as a result too, throwing half-formed catchphrases at the wall to see what sticks: the chorus is a melodic void (odd considering Taylor's songwriting strength); the "gowns" reference is too subtle to register; the patter results in odd scansion throughout ("like it's PUH-trón"); and "snakes and stones never broke my bones" is no more clever than "don't need opinions from a shellfish or a sheep." Speaking of Katy, also wrapped up in all this is a resolution of a beef that never seemed that important except as something for either party to mine for big single launches. It's all too much, especially for a not-bad track that fizzes just fine on its own. It'd be churlish to ask Taylor to take her own advice; for now all I ask for is coherence. [4]
Jonathan Bradley: Taylor Swift has always had a talent for deploying sharp and piquant phrases, the sorts of lyrics that tell blunt little stories like animated gifs. It's an opportunity for her to go broad and get funny: "Some indie record that's much cooler than mine," for instance, or "I can make the bad guys good for a weekend," or "I don't love the drama, it loves me." "You Need to Calm Down" is like an entire song built from these lines, and it whirls by like a Twitter thread or an Instagram story. Taylor sass is a lot of fun, and many of these ripostes are satisfyingly catty in their insouciance ("I'm just like, 'hey... are you OK?'" might be the best of these). Swift has shrugged off detractors on "Shake It Off" and "Mean," but she is more single-minded this time, and that focus paradoxically dilutes the intent. Swift's greatest strength as a songwriter is her interiority; she's adept at examining and interpreting her own feelings. But a consequence of that is that she is far less certain when she needs to step outside the bounds of her own head. The worst song she has ever released was a charity single called "Ronan," in which Swift sung in the voice of a mother who had lost her child to cancer; so talented at realizing her personal traumas, she proved incapable of reconstructing her sympathy for that bereavement in her own voice. "Calm Down" has some things to say about homophobia, and in this terrain outside her own experience, Swift's words are not so much unpleasant as awkward and a bit superficial, particularly in their uncertain invocation of "shade" as bigotry. (If stan theorists needed evidence that Swift is indeed as straight as she publicly presents, it's here: a queer Taylor would not have written a second verse as disengaged as that one.) But even diluted, Swift singles are still constructed tight. This one continues finding the pastel inversion of Reputation's skeletal synth sound, and echoes "ME!" with a hook of vowel sounds as palilalia -- "oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh..." this time, rather than "me-hee-hee." It's a tic that works -- in moderation. [7]
Alex Clifton: (Puts on music critic hat) It's stronger than "ME!" (which isn't hard but worth noting), I'm glad she takes swipes at homophobia but equating that with personal shots is a little bit weird, it's super catchy but the lyrics are still a little lacking, and I still can't remember all the words even though I have the melody memorized. (Takes off music critic hat, puts on bisexual Swiftie stan hat) EVERYTHING IS RAINBOWS AND MY BRAIN WON'T STOP SINGING THIS AND I WOULD MARRY TAYLOR SWIFT, HAPPY PRIDE!!!!! [5]
Alfred Soto: I'm sure it will sound fine on the radio, especially played beside "Bad Guy" and "Old Town Road." The maximalist intentions behind the Everest-sized synth bass and her rat-tat-tat delivery bespeak a mind that recognizes it's the one needing calm. Except for the "parade" line, I wouldn't have known this alludes to Pride if I hadn't watched the video. I don't feel pandered to as a queer man because, after all, a Pride parade is superficial performativity anyway. [6]
Katherine St Asaph: Give her this: the stacked-up arpeggio in the chorus is an absolutely brilliant hook, particularly the second time when it goes over the top. The rapid-fire prechorus is pretty good too. But the beat is the same freezer-burned "Paper Planes"/"With Ur Love"/"Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" chill, the accents are so far from the right syllables they've filed a misSING perSONS REport, the conflating of trolls with professional critics with the literal Westboro Baptist Church is bad (as is the weird class shit in the video, as if you can't be anti-gay and present like a Pleasantville star), and all this was done much better on "Mean." [5]
Katie Gill: In a way, this song is hellishly brilliant. Taylor Swift has provided her standom with a weapon, something that they can wield against any form of criticism. Want to write an article criticizing the fact that Swift seems to put "homophobia" and "me having internet bullies" on the same level, the fact that the video tactlessly paints rural Americana as the enemy of LGBTQ+ people instead of the Mike Pences of the world, or the fact that the second verse leans way too close to the sort of tactlessness that only aggressively woke allies can pull off? Expect a flock of Twitter replies telling you condescendingly that "you need to calm down" and "you're being too loud," as people ignore the half-assed condemnation of standom during the song's third verse in favor of using Swift's lyrics as a cudgel against any perceived haters. For all that Swift is trying to shed the sneaky snake image, traces of it still linger between the lines. [3]
Edward Okulicz: The people who said "Heartbeats" by The Knife was the future of music were right in 2003, and based on this, have now been right for 16 years and counting. That enormous synth-bass takes a song that should have been awful on paper (ugh, a thematic sequel to "This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things," which itself is why we can't have nice things, like good Taylor Swift songs), with the second verse featuring the worst lyrics Swift has ever written, and makes it frisky and playful. The "uh-oh uh-oh UH-OH!" hook is legitimately her best in years. Obsessing about someone is tedious, obsessing about those people is even more tedious, but for once, Swift sounds like she's legitimately above it, even if I don't think she knows what "shade" is. I wanted to hate this for its posturing, but I can't, because of the "uh-oh" bit. But just between you and me, I liked Katy Perry's last single more. [6]
William John: I'm always happy to hear songs that approximate the "Heartbeats" melody, and the layered vocals here sound lovely, but Dorian Corey didn't keep a mummy in her house for fifteen years for "shade" to be misinterpreted so flagrantly. [3]
Danilo Bortoli: Is it fair to demand political accountability from artists? The question remains thorny these days, but when Taylor Swift blatantly goes after pink money, the answer is yes, loud and clear. The case made for "You Need To Calm Down" has pulled the identity politics card (as usual, The Onion put it better). That is, Swift's song oversimplifies an ancient struggle for recognition, making up a narrative that isn't Taylor's to call her own. But what is more infuriating is the sugarcoating: the fact that pride should come only from within, and the naive and painful suggestion that a homophobe would go silent after a line as awful as "shade never made anybody less gay". That is to say, when it comes to protest, I prefer it the French way. Which is why all of this begs the question: Would you tell Richard Spencer to "calm down"? No, of course you wouldn't. [2]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: There are probably 2300 words elsewhere in this post about the politics and rhetoric of Taylor's words here (and I'll get to that), but first I feel obligated to talk about how "You Need To Calm Down" works on a purely musical level. It sounds like ass. It takes the bag of tricks that Swift used on "Ready For It?," the most musically captivating of Reputation's singles, and sands off all of their weird edges. Yes, there's a bass thump to welcome you in, but without the distortion it just sounds like Taylor's doing "Royals"-lite (I mean, Joel Little did produce.) And with the fangs off the verse, the lift to the chorus fails to land. It's all just sound, an undifferentiated, imperial wave of midtempo banger signifier without a real hook. Even Swift's vocals, which have always been her most compelling tool, can't sell the song's vibe -- she's confused not giving a fuck for calm. Of course, it's not entirely clear what "You Need To Calm Down"'s vibe, or point, even is. It's trying to be clever, with its winking references to stale LGBTQ and feminist symbology, but by conflating (or at least juxtaposing) those struggles with the problems that Taylor Swift has as a widely hated famous person, it ends up saying nothing at all. In the end, "You Need To Calm Down" is less a coherent song in itself than a Potemkin village to situate endless thinkpieces in. Make it stop. [3]
Ashley Bardhan: I know the title is "You Need To Calm Down" but there are no human words that can aptly describe how much I hate this song. Think of a young pigeon cooing as it flies through a fish market, weaving over and through the glistening crates of silver-scaled fish and ice. Oh no! There's a problem with a shipment! The owner angrily tosses a fat fish into the air, and its scales glint as it smacks the pigeon mid-air and onto the ground with the full brunt of its weight. The pigeon sees the fish market, its final flight, behind its closed eyes in a hurried blur. It weakly wheezes its final birdsong, and then... nothing. Yaaas, hunty. [0]
Iris Xie: 🤷 This is so tired, I can't even be that mad about it. The only question I have, because this song and MV isn't even worth a QTPOC-centered thinkpiece from me is this: when is the Post Malone + Swae Lee + Taylor Swift collaboration happening? This sounds so much like "Sunflower" and is just as deadening. Even the excitement of one of my besties sending me an ~*urgent*~ text message about Katy Perry and Taylor Swift making up over their imaginary feud, once they realized it hurt both of their fanbases, can't even ignite an ounce of care from me. (Bless your heart, my dear friend.) If she really wanted to pander to the gays, she could've just written a sequel to "Look What You Made Me Do" and become a slicker conduit for the less graceful parts about being in queer scenes, which can be about petty, messy drama, rather than being the subject of rage and apathy about being another harbinger of happy happy HAPPY gaypropriation. Like, whatever, she can have her extremely meaningless self-declared ally medal. I've been calm, just give me actual music. [2]
Isabel Cole: It's like this: A while ago I was catching up with an ex who mentioned he'd recently come back into contact with someone we'd known in high school -- acquaintance of his, frenemy of mine, a few sparkling months of giggling BFF-ship deteriorating across a year I spent defending her while she shit-talked my fashion sense in the girls' room to the local blabbermouth -- and he told me, with an ironic arch of the brow, that when my name had inevitably come up she'd said, "Isabel and I used to be so close; I wonder what happened." Reader, I spent like a week losing my mind, repeating the story and relitigating the history to anyone who would listen while bitterly making fun of her internet presence. Was this because I am petty and emotionally volatile? Yes. But it was also because there is a certain level of willful detachment from reality which I do not have the cognitive capacity to process adequately. Taylor Swift having the gall to tell any human on earth to calm down makes me feel insane the way it makes me feel insane to see someone citing as evidence of their incurable adolescent unpopularity the dorky AIM screenname they picked based on an affectionate joke I made. Taylor Swift saying "take several seats" makes me feel the same combination of spiteful and enraged as reading a line recycled from Livejournal in 2005: please learn like everyone else to disguise the extent to which the human brain is a machine wired to seek validation, the transparency of your desperation is making all of us uncomfortable! God, I wanna snub her in a lunchroom so bad. The song is unappealing in ways that barely merit mentioning -- verses that sound like they were reverse-engineered from a MIDI file of the superior but hardly sublime "Gorgeous," chorus that throws in the plodding piano of roaring bravery -- but even beyond the equivalency it implies between Twitter making fun of her and, like, hate crimes, I find the bridge particularly embarrassing, because of how artlessly it reveals its origin: Taylor Swift literally read a Tumblr post (or, the algorithm we call Taylor Swift processed several hundred Tumblr posts) from 2011 saying "stop pitting female artists against each other [handclap emoji etc.]!!!!!!!!!!!" and thought, Wow! Feminism! As for the possibility that this is another masterful turn from Taylor the troll (or troll!Taylor as there is a distressingly high chance she'd say) and by falling for it I've let her win: (1) Taylor Swift is always already winning, this is exactly what Marx was talking about (2) Let me kick it back to my ex one more time: when I asked what she was like these days, he considered and said: "I thought she'd developed self-awareness, but then I realized it was just self-identification." Yeah. [1]
Scott Mildenhall: You know sometimes, when you read the annotations on genius.com, how their deductions and inferences appear to have been made by algorithm? For instance, the notion that this being released on that loud American guy's birthday "seems to support the theory" that one line is about him? This is what would happen if that algorithm was tasked with writing a satirical song. [5]
Stephen Eisermann: My take? This is more lazy allyship than commercialization of pride. Plus, it's kind of a bop. Sucks, then, that Taylor completely misunderstands what shade is -- but did we really expect any better? [6]

It’s 2005. I’m a junior in college living in a house with 7 other dudes. Beer cans and cigarette ash litter the common room floor. Nightly Mario Party tournaments and 3 AM disco fries from The Argonaut become a near daily ritual. And every morning, without fail, the theme to “Chappelle’s Show” loops indefinitely on our collegiate fireplace: the 35-inch television we spend countless hours gathered around. In an inebriated, sleep-deprived state, someone forgot to turn it off so the home screen of the DVD collection plays and resets and plays again. It stays this way until someone stumbles out of bed and switches the input to play Shadow of the Colossus or to put on a Godard film for class.
And then it repeats.
It was a time we all remember fondly but would all prefer to keep firmly in the past.
It was during that year I discovered Talib Kweli (along with Q and Not U, Gnarls Barkley, Amy Winehouse, of Montreal among countless others) while we combed through episodes of Chappelle for the 5th or 6th time that month. “Get By” was a more than your average banger: smart, aurally rich, and captained by a sick Kanye West beat. So it was no surprise that, when I eventually got my hands on “Quality,” it knocked my socks off. So much so, that, while listening to it this past week, my current feelings on it threw me for a loop.
I tend to listen to my musical proclivities from high school with a more discerning ear; My brain wasn’t fully developed, I had lower standards, I desperately tried to be “outside of the box.” But I don’t think that way when it comes to college. Sarah Lawrence was full of “outside of the box” people so why should I be as critical of my taste then as I was in the preppy, rich-kid halls of Lincoln High?
But as I listened to track after track of Kweli’s slightly behind the beat rhyming layered over slick, radio-ready production, the wordplay and constant consciousness began to grow monotonous and mediocre, and I had to wonder about where my love of this album originally came from.
And it led me back to the debauchery and dirt of Slonim 9.
Perhaps “Quality” is best left as an album I’ll always remember fondly but prefer to keep firmly in the past.
Update
I recently came across a copy of Tom Waits’ “Nighthawks at the Diner,” and didn’t quite know what to do. It is, most definitely, not a “studio album,” but it transcends the standard definition of a “live album” as well. Along with this, I have been struggling with whether or not to throw Nirvana’s “MTV Unplugged in New York,” into the ring for a similar reason. The matter is further complicated by the fact that Keith Jarrett’s “The Koln Concert” has been labeled a “Top 100 Contender.”
So, after some thought, here’s what I landed upon: I’m going to remove the live albums from this quest. After this journey is finished, it may be worth it to comb through my live albums with a similar scrutiny, but that is a separate project. I’m going to stick with my initial boundaries: only studio albums, no compilations, no EPs, no live recordings.
What this means tangibly is that I’ll go down to 86 albums on the contender list and 1276 listened to in total (before adding this past week).
What I listened to last week:
Top 100 contenders in bold.
Talib Kweli - Quality
Jurassic 5 - Quality Control: The whole album is a bit much, but Jurassic are really an excellent crew.
Emery - The Question: Up there with Mae for one of the more interesting and least cringe-worthy Christian emo acts.
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Question the Answers
The Vandals - The Quickening
Gym Class Heroes - The Quilt: Once again, Busta Rhymes shows up to throw down: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuJiPsOEEKs
Catch Up Albums (Albums I missed or purchased/acquired since beginning the quest):
Michael Jackson - Bad
Brian Wilson - Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE
George Michael - Faith
Prince - Musicology: Good News: Prince is fucking great. Bad News: There are 37 more studio albums I now have to find/listen to.
Michael Jackson - Off The Wall
Albums listened to in total: 1,287

No Excuses (but also some excuses)
Warning: the following post contains a lot of naval gazing...
I should probably apologise for the lateness of this blog post. Or maybe, on second thoughts, I shouldn’t apologise at all. I never intended this to be constant, bi-weekly affair. Just something I’d use as an outlet for any thoughts, opinions or feelings I had that I felt were worth sharing. In true me style however, updating this thing became a source of anxiety for me. What if I had nothing more to say? What if it’s already been said? What if people will expect more of the blog and I don’t deliver? What if my lack of studying in writing and literature becomes painfully apparent and the blog just becomes a viral embarrassment? Seriously. I know it’s irrational, you don’t have to remind me. But I did my best to quash those nervy b’s, to smash them into the ground with my sturdiest Doc Martens (which I’m excited to share have been worn in again now that the grass-scorching heat has dissipated and that gorgeous northern brew of rain and cloud cover has blessed the streets of London) with vigour, and perhaps a few beads of sweat from my upper lip. Sometimes they’re just whispers, in the back of your head, gently feeding the self doubt with seeds of dissent, until the crop grows more fully into something weedier, which is much harder to stamp out. It’s importantly quell those sneaky whispers regularly. Luckily, I kept doing just that; I only needed to update the blog when it was relevant, and if I didn’t feel like it, I didn’t have to. In the end if I have to apologise, it’s to myself (I am sorry if anyone was waiting on another post; I know I’m being pretty self absorbed here). I mean, I don’t think I kept any of you awake at night, clutching at your bed clothes, covered in tears and mud and ghosts, shrieking “WHEN WILL SHE UPDATE HER BLOG? I PRAYED TO THE HEAVENS AND I CALLED DOWN THE SPIRIT OF UNANNY AND STILL I AM LEFT HERE TO CRY ASUNDER?!” Or something along those lines.
(I don’t know who Unanny is.)
So if I don’t feel like it, I don’t have to. That’s kind of been my modus operandi of late; if I’m not inspired, the universe just isn’t open for business. She ain’t sellin’. I try not beat myself up when I can’t execute an idea, or when I’m trying to write a draft for my novel and my neural pathways seem to be blocked up with desire for cheese and Harry Potter instead of lyrical wit and literary glory. I actively choose not to berate myself, but treat myself. I’ve been working steadily for the past year to nurse myself with kindness and to give myself more respect than before, to step forward in small steps of positivity rather than falling backwards into regret and self doubt. It’s constant, small work, rewiring your brain. But I think it’s been working. Some days I’m not certain, but for the most part, yes.
See, I figured if I pushed myself when I wasn’t jiving with it, if I tried to scratch down the words or search the heavens for the melodies, to pull a sick “beat” out of my arse on Logic, it would certainly be insufferable. The worst kind of creativity. Just awful. If I try to force an idea, it won’t feel good, and that is in direct assault with my philosophy of kindness. I know what you’re thinking though, you have to fail in order to succeed, and I’d agree that is another trite but true platitude that I’ve been trying to adhere to. I’ve spent years avoiding true creativity or expression in the event that it will be the worst thing anyone (myself included) has ever heard, read or bore witness to in the history of all creative outputs, and that’s including Friday by Rebecca Black. Banger.
Eventually, I switched myself off from it, I turned away and kept myself in the dark, only trusting the light when someone had the good grace to give me a compliment. But there’s only so long you can rely on others for your self worth. And that time is finite, my friends. So I’ve been very focused on complimenting myself, on sitting in the light, in trying, failing, trying, failing. Life is a cycle, it all moves, life and death, we all get to start again. All of it. And I do believe that. I do. Just recently I’ve been working and writing and recording some things that have been purely experimental for me; I’ve so enjoyed fleshing out parts and lines, tearing my lyrics apart and compromising and hearing the bad sections and replacing them with better ones, only to change my mind about it being there in the first place, and all of this being a very good, very productive, very nourishing thing.
But when the goddess ain’t calling, I don’t call her and ask her why she isn’t picking up the phone. Instead, I'm just grateful in the moments of proper creativity; I write down my moments of inspiration, I note down the lyrics that flow unbidden into my brain, I find images that source the artistic ideas I want to follow up and I record melodies and song ideas into my phone. In those moments, however fleeting or short, I find comfort, and I thank myself for being such an incredible fucking genius.
OKAY RON. You’re right. I’m not a genius.
My other motto in life is something an old friend said to me, and it has resonated with me ever since. Know what you’re good at, and know what you’re not. Know your skills and worth, but have the grace to admit your flaws and the things that have you stumped. Be strong enough to admit that you’re not perfect and when you can ask for help, you can usually take down anyone who looks at you condescendingly for not knowing just by saying that to them. You’re stronger and wiser for it, I think. There is nothing wrong with not having all the answers. And the guy (and it’s always a guy that laughs at me for asking...sigh), who thinks he is the pot of all knowing is usually stumped by your lack of shame or embarrassment.
So the one thing I’m not good at is persisting. Whether that’s at picking up my guitar more, playing the piano, learning to use Logic or getting to grips with music production. Or maybe it’s just persisting in the face of my fears. I’m not sure, man. Is it the anxiety, or a genuine unease and lack of musical ability that stops me? I’m painfully aware that my knowledge of chords is slim, but I’m also horrendously aware that it’s because I don’t practise enough. So I’m not perfect, I’m not the best at this. I still have some ways to go in improving as an artist. I’m a lazy arsehole, and imma tell you all that.
Frustratingly though - and this is kind of what I wanted to get on to - I keep seeing my former good vibe sentiment all over social media. You know, the one about being kinder to yourself, taking more time, forgiving yourself; “thank your inner diva!” And while I obviously think this a very commendable and instructive philosophy, I also believe it willfully ignores the hard, teeth baring work we have to do to undo all the negativity we’ve practised over the years. I’m a firm believer of the philosophy that we have to be kinder to ourselves to lessen the mental load, but we also have to graft and get our nails dirty, we have to be able to face our fears and we must not become complacent. This is my biggest fear (alongside being alone, failure, tiny clusters of small holes and little girl ghosts), that I’ll become a haven of positivity and light and a beacon for hope and transcendence in my downward dog pose, but I’ll also become a lazy fucker who’s convinced herself she doesn’t have to learn all the chords because the “universe hasn’t made me yet.” We have to tell ourselves when we’re being an insufferable twat, and fast. Pride is no longer fashionable to me. I know this makes me sound like a full tilt bozo, but it’s a genuine concern. In the last year I’ve fully inserted myself, bellend first, into yoga, mindfulness, meditation, exercise and being a zen queen. I’ve challenged myself mentally in ways I wouldn’t have even considered when I was younger, I’ve accepted blame and flaws about myself, I’ve done it all. But my pale white scrotum is still so very privileged and doesn’t want to do the hard work. It doesn’t want to fertilise the soil. I just want to plough into it ‘cos it feels good. But what if I wake up one day, with my pale scrotum in hand, ready to fertilise, and I’ve been left barren and empty? What if I’ve wasted it all trying to save it all up for that one good plough, but then the opportunity never comes? WHAT IF I MISS THE OPPORTUNITIES AND THEN ALL THE FIELDS HAVE BEEN FERTLISED BY SOMEONE ELSE?!?? Okay. So I have to do better. I have to play when I don’t feel like it. I have to learn musical theory so it is ingrained in my synapses. I have to fertilise the bloody soil with all the creative jizz I can muster; whether it’s good, nutritious, exciting stuff, or whether it’s weak and half-arsed. The field doesn’t mind. Any jizz is good jizz. I’m sure you’re wondering where I pulled that analogy out of but I’m sure you can all guess. Hint: you sit on it
The following excuses will not fly; • I don’t feel like it • I’m not inspired • I went for a run this morning and I’m tiiiired (whiney voice required) • I have to finish this Herbology class on my Hogwarts Mystery game • I worked for a whole four hours this morning • The onions made me cry • I’ve already written some lyrics this week (whiney voice also required with this one) • I have no money • I haven’t showered yet • The plants need watering, the towels need washing, need to buy food, all the chores etc. • Charlie Weasley wants to be my friend on Hogwarts Mystery game and I’ve always wanted to be a Weasley • I spent two hours looking at houseplants online and didn’t buy anything • I’ve been trawling the internet for pictures of James McAvoy and his girlfriend to see if he’s truly happy and wouldn’t rather be with me instead Ultimately the only acceptable excuse I will accept is that I’m menstruating. So I urge you all to do the same (persist, not menstruate). Please let me know that you’re guilty of this too. I’m tired of seeing all these bloody proactive “influencers” pouncing out and assaulting me with their life positivity and perfect, shiny, stylish lives.
Ok. I’m looking forward to my next post a little more now. And talking about something else other than jizz and scrotums.
Let’s keep trying. xxx

Harley Davidson Insurance -Typical Cost?
I am a 19-year old male who has been riding a motorcycle for about 3 years and took a rider safety course. How could she afford health insurance?
Here's the real life monthly budget of a 28 year old woman I recently met: Wages +1760 [$10 an hour; full time, no holiday bonus pay] Taxes -250 [Social Security, Medicare and Federal Income Tax] Take Home = 1510 rent 600 [1/2 of shared apartment] car 300 [includes auto insurance and repairs] food 200 [and household supplies] electric 50 [her half] cell ph 50 church 50 clothes 100 [includes makeup, beauty, and entertainment] replacements 165 [primarily for her car = 2,000/yr] {used car replaced about every four years with another used car that is about 6 years old when bought. Monthly costs are 150 for insurance, 50 for gas, and 100 for repairs. She has no auto loan payment.] *** How much does this woman have left to buy health insurance with? *** you're exactly right -- ZERO her employer offers all employees a fine health plan -- at a cost of 700 a month for a single employee [employer contribution is zero]. Is there any way she could possibly afford health insurance? Only if it is free. There is no other way. *** what does this woman do if/when she gets sick? because she works in health care, she aks the doctor who sees her patients while he's at her workplace. he looks at her off the record and writes an Rx if needed. cost = zero plus the Rx. *** Here's the challenge -- how do you pay for her health insurance without raising her taxes?? [She can't afford any higher taxes.] Notice that, aside from her car replacement fund, she has no savings, no retirement plan other than Social Security, and almost no assets. One credit card, zero balance, used once a week on average, always pays it off. *** Dear Congressman: This woman is your uninsured target. She almost literally can't afford to pay anything for health insurance; and certainly can't afford fancy health insurance -- she's just barely making it as is. [She makes too much to be eligible for Medicaid since she has no kids.] What's her plan for a serious illness? Go to the hospital, get admitted, and go bankrupt afterward. She has an older used car and no assets -- nothing to be taken away [her car fund would be emptied for rent and food while she's unable to work]. Tell us how this is going to work -- her employer, btw, is almost bankrupt now, so you can't tax it to provide the health insurance unless you also increase health care reimbursements to providers.""
Buying car insurance?
I've got my driving test in September and thinking about buying a car if I pass. I'm just a bit confused about how to buy a car and car insurance. Do I need to look around for a car I like, get all the details of the car, buy insurance for that car, then actually buy the car, in that order? Also are new cars or older cars cheaper to insure? I think it's newer cars but I'm not sure. Also what is a good car for cheaper insurance. I've heard Ford and Vauxhall are good for cheap insurance. I've been on price comparison sites and it seems that even if I have pass plus and just third party cover 2k per year is a minimum :( Thanks.""

How would obamacare affect our family?
We are a middle class family, smack dab in the middle... Hubby's job provides health insurance, but for a family of 3, which we are, it would cost $200 a week for coverage, with high deductible, so! Since hubby is in exceptional health and hasnt had any medical problems (knock on wood!) he continues without health insurance; I remain on my parents plan as I'm 25 (aka under 26yrs old), and we pay for child health plus for my daughter, for a small fee a month, which depends on our income We simply couldn't afford to pay $800 a month for family coverage, so doing it this way saves us, like $600+! So since we don't make enough to pay for hubbys $800 family plan through work, is obamacare basically going to force hubby to get health insurance through his work, even though it's complete garbage? Or will his employer have more affordable family plan that we could afford? Just trying to understand it all better! Thanks in advance! :-)""

They offer great rates for auto insurance but before considering switching to them I'm curious as to whether other people in Alberta or British Columbia have had pleasant or unpleasant experiences with them.
Why are some insurance companys rates so much higher then others?
Isn't there a risk guide insurance company's use? shouldn't that be the same or similar for all Insurance company's? I ask because I switched insurance company's and saved $300 for a 6 month policy. That seems to be a bit excessive to be off by that much.
How close is Geico's quote to what you actually get?
I will be purchasing insurance from geico and was wondering how close their quote is to what you will be paying? The sales guy told me it might be higher or lower than the online quote. Has anyone had any experience with this? What are the factors that would cause either an increase or decrease in the online quote when you're actually purchasing? The online quote seemed like it asked for your social security so it clearly did a credit check too.

That is actually Odd!
Pompous • I found Susie unbearably ostentatious. • Although the decoration could be quite formal, there is absolutely nothing ostentatious about the food, which is actually down-home excellent • So Princeton looked good for university till I encountered their pretentious admissions associate • The bistro is actually suffocating, pretentious, and also unbelievably pricey • He grumbled that my titles were pretentious as well as unclear, and given off the blue-stocking. • He might be pretentious in various other ways, but he was certainly not posing at the computer keyboard • a pompous film • Bangers and also mash is actually much better than pompous nouvellecuisine, though you could perhaps be actually a little bit extra initial! • He has a pompous design from composing, making use of four quite complicated phrases where one basic one would certainly perform. • That might appear ostentatious to state thus however it is planned in Gramsci's conditions as a natural intellectual job. I really feel that along with so many terrific characters throughout guide that everyone will definitely manage to discover somebody they may associate with. I additionally feel this will certainly hold true as the handful from individuals that have read this up until now all have actually had various characters for who they have actually related to directly or even enjoyed or perhaps detested.
The explanation I state this is actually that I recognize for sure there is numerous, lots of people on the market that lived not always within the business or even violence side of the planet - yet that were actually intensely engageded in the striking culture and the medicines that worked together with it and also over very likely sense that yes - that time frame in their lives back then was most definitely modified in some way by exactly what took place. That person's pompous use of phrases hides the fact that they do certainly not have just about anything important to point out. That's since today (just like at that time), folks misusage the word pompous" all the damn time. Initial idea that you are actually certainly not business person material ... is actually if you are actually looking for a quick and easy or fast technique to construct wealth. The in activity anecdotal purpose from the isle could be had as the literal purpose from the video game, if you want it to possess one. And also mistreating words pretentious" is perhaps one of the most ostentatious traits an individual may do. I hooked up with everybody coming from recent and also I struck the crack-pipe over a four month period in such a way that would have eliminated lots of people after a time's session along with the kind of abuse I was actually self inflicting. The buyer, which had actually devoted the last 4 hours with Leo looked him in the eye and said loudly how much he liked the product and also told Leo that he was actually the greatest sales person he had actually observed in a number of years. However our experts presently possess enough basic, all-round outrages, as well as our company do not should switch ostentatious into yet an additional one, particularly when it presently possesses such a great particular meaning. . Leo Silver, the northeast area salesman has been actually participating in the same pointless rah rah treatments for 3 years and the conferences are actually constantly the very same. I love the end of the video game hugely despite the fact that eventually that's just an incentive. Keep in mind that within this situation, Pretentious.spec _ for/minitest _ for is not needed in the example documents as the intended classes are currently specified in the targets section. Our team spend people for their phrases, our team permit them to discuss the method they experience over some canvass and our team're willing to pay out thousands because of some recognized intensity or even emotional state. Another word that's utilized in the Level F System 2 vocabulary workshop solutions is words aplomb. This attacked me a few days ago that there are actually mosting likely to be a BUNCH OF pretentious, egoistic, lifestyle from daddy's money as well as having 4 A after being actually assembly-line drove with some independent school southerners at Uni. When that is ending up being even more as well as much more an open trick that folks do not just like to view adds (if they really ever before carried out!), and also this at an opportunity. I feel that with so many great personalities throughout the book that everybody will certainly be able to discover an individual they may relate to. I likewise experience this will definitely hold true as the handful from people that have reviewed it thus far all have actually had different personalities for who they have actually associated with personally or really loved or maybe detested. I had ended up being utilized to individuals speaking with me (and also one another) like they were actually all rubbish, so this was a surprising comparison off the normal shopping center crowd. In every grow older there is actually a brand new development of fact, a notification of God to individuals from that production. You will definitely devote your opportunity, expertise and also energy on the people which deserve it. You will be functioning smarter and also making the significant bucks. You could pass the stalk by means of the fire or leave that in boiled water for 30 few seconds, after you cut the stalk 2 ins below completion. Yet some folks do not like it. everything stuff regarding little ones as well as davinci is actually presumption on your component. Should you loved this information and you wish to receive much more information concerning mountains in scotland over 3000 feet; estiramiento--enlamanana.info, assure visit our page. Yes, I assume our company may all of concur they are among one of the most pretentious points in the world. I talked to everybody off recent as well as I hit the crack-pipe over a 4 month time period in a manner that would possess eliminated lots of people after a day's session along with the kind of abuse I was self inflicting. The purchaser, that had actually spent the last 4 hrs along with Leo appeared him in the eye and also announced just how much he really loved the product and said to Leo that he was the best agent he had viewed in a long period of time. Sometimes affluent folks create craft for various other rich people, but that has actually been the case for a lengthy opportunity. That is actually still simply a paint from two individuals with nothing special about this which your normal decently knowledgeable painter nowadays (which our experts possess plenty within this day and age) could create as well as create better. But beyond the work labels, a great deal of developers come across as pompous in each from their language. Nowadays trying to force people to allow disruption is only visiting switch all of them off a lot more. That's an art work from two folks, that's it. In regards to premium through exactly how individuals were actually painted, you may certainly not necessarily even call that great. If being actually authentic is actually thought about a virtue - just what our experts need to strive to be in society - at that point being actually ostentatious is actually thought about a whitewash, a face-palm to your history. Appreciate the uncluttered and also strange looks of Ostentatious Video game and dive wholeheartedly right into a poetic and deeper story. The daffodil hairstyle blooms could avoid from 4 to 8 days, if they are actually properly joined. The inverse is actually usually correct that many of people I encounter which just like tarkovsky find science and mathematics as inevitably worthless pedantry and also location a high worth on the banking company from imaginative matter they have actually accumulated, as well as together have also never carried out any sort of severe analysis in philosophy, several overlooking just about anything appearing like the analytics or even extra deciding on a right one" and also reading more to verification predisposition their means to personal fulfillment. I should also point out that although the initial manual could show up to proclaim exactly what took place, you actually should check out all 3 books to observe that this carries out not paint a happy photo and reveals why folks shouldn't take the roadway that I had. There the word is actually as considerably a word for what is unfamiliar when it comes to what is actually inaccurate. There are actually many other terms for folks along with doubtful taste that I question why we emphasize tarnishing up a flawlessly compliment with all kind of extra connotations. A scrawny 22-year aged along with a mustache that he cannot very carry out does not possess a pretentious mustache." That exact same 22-year outdated can conveniently be actually ostentatious, yet it would have to be actually for his actions, phrases and requirements, certainly not the success or failing of his flavor-saver. I want to feel that we all have a specific degree of good ethical trustworthiness, however individuals in general are actually quite vulnerable to honest disadvantages. That single trait wields more power compared to many people realize, and this is actually constructed in per as well as everyone people. In Mike's own terms, I feel like a ventriloquist. In my opinion the activity is actually an outstanding effort in behalf of the producers even at a private level to make and create ideas and also tips that are actually new as well as without model in videogame market. Reduce the stalk at a quite pointy slant under the water and also compared to allow the water to flow over the contains for 3 mins. Pretentiousness laid outs a degree from dislocation in between our situations as well as the picture our team are trying to project.

Nick Cvijovic’s Top 10 of 2017
Nick Cvijovic slings guitar in Chicago punk band, Butchered.
I always love the end of the year because every media publication puts out their top-whatevers for songs, albums, movies, etc. The problem I face every year is that I get super attached to albums that came out the year prior and then tend not listen to anything new throughout the year until the next best-of lists come out. It’s a ridiculous cycle that I am glad to have broken this year. While most of my top listens were all 2016 albums, I did make time for stuff that came out this year. Just a short disclaimer: it is unanimously decided that Damn. by Kendrick Lamar was the best record of 2017.
I believe it is and everyone should believe it to be as well. It was an incredible work of art both in order and in reverse; however, my list does not contain it. My list represents the albums that meant the most to me throughout 2017 and albums that I will consider classics until the end of music. I played these albums endless amounts of times over the past year so I know what I like, I think. I whittled this list down from 35 different albums that I deemed my favorite and I still think ten albums is far too little to rank after this year’s offering of music. Whatever, here I go anyway
10. Pulled Apart By Horses- The Haze // Mobina Galore- Feeling Disconnected
(Alright, I already have a tie, big deal.) Pulled Apart by Horses is a heavy garage-y band that brings so much more than your standard Ty Segall or whatever the flavor-of-the-week garage bands are in nowadays. The Haze is a perfect bar brawl soundtrack that reminds me of those early revival bands like The Libertines and the Fratellis, albeit with more fuzz. That’s what makes this record so good; there are tons of catchy melodies, great musicianship, and a liberal use of fuzzy guitar. It’s a simple formula that makes this album so much fun.
[Recommended track: “Hotel Motivation”]
Also tied with this record is Winnipeg’s Mobina Galore, who put out Feeling Disconnected, the duo’s debut album. I couldn’t believe these girls were a two-piece when I first listened. The songwriting is incredible and is perfect fare for any punk, but also has a hardcore vibe. These girls blew up too after this album, and deservedly so; touring with the likes of Against Me! and Propaghandi- both bands that are clear influences on Mobina Galore.
[Recommended track: “Vancouver”]
9. Zeal & Ardor- Devil is Fine
I’m going to quickly preface this by saying that I could have sworn this album came out in 2016 but Spotify says 2017 so screw it. Anyway, this album is the only good thing to ever come out of 4chan. Manuel Gagneux is a Swiss-American musician who came to New York after fleeing his Swiss Army duties and decided to ask the cesspool of 4chan what kind of album to make. They responded to his request by saying black metal and the blues, although not in those words because it’s 4chan. Gagneux’s debut as Zeal & Ardor takes black metal’s typically buzz saw guitar and pairs it with his own rendition of Satan-worshipping delta blues chants. It’s seriously the most original metal offering that I can think of, becoming almost hypnotic during the call and response verses channeling old slave songs of the mid 1800s and then ripping your stupid head clean off when the screaming and instrumentation kick in, and then become almost danceable when the two are blended. I don’t know, I get too excited talking about this record, and there’s so much to dissect within it. While sticking to blues-inflected black metal, there is also lounge and EDM styled songs which break up the record wonderfully. It’s all so cool, dudes. [Recommended track: “Come On Down” ]
8. The Dopamines- Tales of Interest
I am a sucker for self-deprecating punk rock and Cincinnati’s The Dopamines have always done it the best since their debut in 2008. Nine years later they are still screaming about their jobs and being broke; typical punk rock themes. But they have great harmony and melody within every seemingly-three-chord song that really separates them from every other band within their genre. Tales of Interest is full of songs that are believable; what I mean is that there is so much feeling in every note, chord, and lyric that it never ever gets whiny. Couple that with the Dopamines ability to have awesome songwriting that can rip on one chord over and over without ever getting tiresome and you have a perfect Midwest punk record. The dudes also incorporate some super heavy metal riffing on a few of the tracks which makes this album the best for getting too drunk and yelling at the top of your lungs until your neighbors call the cops. Stupid neighbors, they’ll never understand. [Recommended tracks: “Ire” and “Kaltes Ende”] https://radgirlfriendrecords.bandcamp.com/track/ire-2
7. Woe- Hope Attrition
I had the hardest time trying to decide to put Power Trip’s incredible Nightmare Logic or Bell Witch’s Mirror Reaper in this spot because both of those albums were very important this year, not just in metal, but in the mainstream as well. Hell, Pitchfork loved both. Well, the mainstream’s opinions are crap and Woe had the best metal record, and nobody was really talking about it. Hope Attrition came to my attention only a few weeks ago but I think I have listened to it once or twice a day since then. Black metal seems to be pretty repetitive stylistically recently (shoooooeeeeegggaaazzzeeee), but Woe brings an album that is equal parts epic and brutal. Sure, there are blast beats and guttural vocals, but Hope Attrition also throws in some high pitched screams, clean vocals, and interesting song structure. The guitars fucking wail too, and feature some of the coolest sounding solos I have heard in a long time. This album differs from a lot of black metal lyrically too, singing about real life evils of white supremacy and our nation’s ineptitude. It’s refreshing (for me at least) to have metal be topical, and to lean more leftist. None of it matters anyway because you think Mirror Reaper should have been on here. Shove it. [Recommended track: “No Blood Has Honor”]
6. Rozwell Kid- Precious Art
One of the lines that begins this album states, “I’m down to my underwear because I through it all away in a Wendy’s trash can” and if you don’t think that is the best damn line ever than you are a moron. Rozwell Kid continues in the tradition of making guitar rock awesome again, essentially making a record that Weezer should be doing, but would get shit on for because it’d still be too weird for them. Precious Art’s themes are personal, but filtered through wit and loud dueling guitars. Songs thematically range from losing it, to romantic hangs watching UHF, to a song about wanting to be something else- specifically a dog. Everything Rozwell Kid does is a lot nerdy, a lot sarcastic, or a lot goofy, to veil deeply emotional writing but they never fail to keep the guitars loud as hell. [Recommended track: “Wendy’s Trash Can”]
5. The Eradicator- The Eradicator
The first time I ever saw the Eradicator live was when he opened for Direct Hit! at the Double Door for the Wasted Mind release show. I had seen the sketch before (the Kids in the Hall sketch) and was incredibly excited to hear how one guy was going to base an entire set of songs off of one or two 5 minute sketches from an old TV show. The sketch is about a masked squash player trying to work up the ranks of his local D-squash league. He eats, breathes, and sleeps Squash, and the Eradicator embodies everything that this character was. I found out soon that not only are the songs hilarious, but they also shred. The Eradicator can get everyone in the crowd, even if it’s their first time hearing him, to sing along to songs about his quest to climb the D-squash ladder. The songwriting features a mix of straight forward punk rock to hardcore bashing but always stay to true to reminding the listener that football sucks, tennis sucks, baseball’s cool, curling rules, but they’re not the sports for him. [Recommended track: “I’m a Squash Man”]
4. Metz- Strange Peace
What would any list of best albums be if it didn’t include Canada’s finest? A list not worth publishing that’s for sure. I was so worried that Metz would fall into a hole of making a softer sounding indie rock album, similar to Cloud Nothings new record, but am I glad that I was wrong. Also, of course they wouldn’t do that; they’re one of the loudest and most raucous bands around. Strange Peace is filled with wall to wall bangers, some coming in under a minute and some almost pushing the six minute mark. This record is sort of similar to their other albums, and that is what makes it great. Metz doesn’t need to change up their sound too much to keep any listener happy; they stick with the incredible drumming, thundering bass, noisy guitar work, and catchy yet screaming vocals.
[Recommended track: “Mr. Plague”]
3. IDLES- Brutalism
I got turned on to IDLES from one of my students, actually. Upon first listen, I was like, “what is this?” It was so out there from my normal tastes that I couldn’t stop listening. IDLES fills this album with simplistic musicality, akin to Plague Vendor or Protomartyr, but it’s in the vocals and song writing that really caught me. The songs on Brutalism are a collection of working class angst and sarcastic commentary on pop culture all almost spoken, rather than sung. That does not take away from the catchiness of it, though. All the songs clearly come from the heart and are brutally honest, anthems for those who are dissatisfied and bored as hell. I’d pair this record with whiskey and percosets at 8am after being laid off from your shitty job. [Recommended track: “Mother”]
2. Japandroids- Near To The Wild Heart of Life
Japandroids has been one my favorite bands for a long time. I absolutely love how incredibly huge their sound is for being a two-piece, although with a butt load of amps. Japandroids had been relatively silent since their last album, Celebration Rock, which came out in 2012 to great reception. Everyone was fairly skeptical if they could repeat the anthems and sing-alongs that that album brought, but they totally blew everyone out of the water. This album may seem just like a regular rock album to some, but the songs are just so perfect to blast whether you’re having a bad day, a great day, alone, with friends, drinking, hungover, whatever. I can’t help but get chills when this album comes on; the dynamics are amazing and make you feel alive. If there was any single record that 2017 needed to feel better about itself, it’s Near To The Wild Heart of Life. [Recommended track: “In a Body Like a Grave”]
1. ’68- Two Parts Viper
Josh Scogin is the best vocalist in hardcore; hands down. When his last band, hardcore heroes The Chariot, broke up, I was so disappointed that we wouldn’t have any new music from him in the future. Then ’68 dropped two tracks in 2014, followed by one of the most awesome albums ever, In Humor and Sadness. ’68 keeps with their untouchable blend of hardcore and rock and roll on Two Parts Viper, a sort of combination of The Chariots spastic riffs and songwriting, and White Stripes-styled two-piece heavy blues. Scogin’s lyrics really shine through on this album as well, coming off as spoken word at parts before the crushing guitar and drums bash in. Where there’s feedback on this album, there is Scogin’s poetry; where there is screaming, there is singing. This is one of the most dynamic records to come out in a long time, going back and forth from heavy rock-oriented riffs and grooves to chanting and Josh’s inimitable screaming, even throwing in the oddball sample in the middle of a song. There is nothing that comes close to ’68 in terms of style and I don’t think there ever will be. 10 out 10 snakes.
[Recommended track: “Whether Terrified or Unafraid”]

The Ultimate Embarrassing Breakup Playlist
By Choates n’ Hoes
That’s right, everyone, as you may have gleaned from the title, I have yet again made the mistake of thinking that a male saw me as a human worth knowing and not simply a vagina who talks a lot. How crazy was that?! God! Here’s how it went down. It got pretty messy:
ME: Hi, how are you?
HIM: Good, how are you?
ME: Ugh, actually, now that you ask, I have a big midterm that I’m not prepared for on Tuesday and I’m feeling pretty tired and my left eye is kind of itchy and—
HIM: WHOA, holy shit, Jesus Christ, that is WAY too much information, you’re supposed to just say “okay” and have your shirt off by the second syllable.
Wow! I’m cringing just reading it. I can’t believe what a psycho I was! Just call me Velcro! Just call me Saran Palin! Just call me that-piece-of-toilet-paper-that-got-stuck-to-your-shoe-and-embarrassed-you-in-front-of-everyone because I sure am clingy!
Anyway, he ended things pretty quickly after that disastrous gaffe of mine. So, naturally, I’ve decided to take some time to myself. Process this in a healthy way by lying in bed, cancelling all my plans, and sobbing to my favorite playlist. In the interest of spreading the love, I’ve decided to share some choice tracks with you: for when the deep cuts aren’t just on the b-side of the record, but also on your heart.
Yellow—Coldplay
You may think this is a great breakup song because of the intense melodrama of such lines as, “for you I’d bleed myself dry.” This is misleading, though. You’re gonna start listening to this song in the throes of misery. Perhaps you’ll be in the fetal position. You may let a tear slip from your eye. And then you’re gonna remember this song is about Gwyneth Fucking Paltrow. And you’ll realize that if someone can muster this much enthusiasm about that woman, who is the human equivalent of a Q-tip dipped in a wheatgrass shot, love might just be out there for you, too.
Landslide—Fleetwood Mac
That’s right, asshole! I’ve been afraid of changing cause I built my life around you! I gave you everything! I left parties at 1 AM instead of 1:30 just to hook up with your sorry ass! I slept over and made eye contact with your frat brother washing our hands together in the bathroom at 6 AM! I memorized your schedule just so I could happen to pass by the LSC after 2As!
Beyond the obvious relevance of this song to anyone who has ever been in love or had a birthday or felt a single feeling in their life, is there anyone better to model your life off of than Stevie Nicks?! She’s been relevant for the past several decades. She dresses like a witch. She makes nothing but bangers for sad girls. Wait—forget about whoever that boy was. Focus on becoming Stevie.
Hold Up—Beyonce
If Beyonce gets cheated on, there’s no hope for any of us. This one is crucial for the “acceptance” stage.
Back to December—Taylor Swift
This song hails from a simpler time: when a Taylor Swift breakup was actually still kind of surprising instead of, you know, part of the whole act. This song is a lot of fun to sing dramatically, until you remember it’s about Taylor Lautner. And then you remember that Taylor Lautner was actually kind of a big deal when you were in middle school. And then you remember he was a big deal because of the Twilight series. And then you remember how into Twilight you were. And then, to your horror, you can’t remember whether you were Team Edward or Team Jacob!!! Wait, Taylor Lautner was Jacob, right?! Oh god, who was I?! Where did my youthful innocence go?!
Chelsea Hotel No. 2—Rufus Wainwright
This song is pretty unrealistic for most of us ladies to listen to because it includes a lyric about your lover giving you head, but it’s still full of longing and sadness that you may need right now, if you can handle living in that fantasy land.
Someone Like You—Adele
Never mind, I’ll find someone like you—because 90% of the dudes on this campus look exactly the damn same. And half of them are named Alex. Or Seth. Or, like, Franklin F. VanDesRosen III. See, you’ll find a rebound in no time: and chances are you already know their entire name and their entire story!!
Do I Wanna Know?—Arctic Monkeys
No, you don’t. Whether it’s what he did with his pledge brothers or the true story behind that girl in the left-hand background of his third most recent profile picture...you don’t wanna know. Click out of social media. Watch some newscaster fails instead—infinitely better for morale.
Lost/Inside Our Minds—John Vincent III
“I wrote about you...fuckin’ waste of time.” This is a very personal addition for me as a writer, because no lyric has ever resonated with me so deeply. However, you don’t have to be a writer to relate: think of how tired your thumbs were that time you and your best friend deconstructed what his eye contact across the library meant over text. Fuckin’ waste of time!
Lay Me Down—Sam Smith
Maybe you’re feeling lonely in that big wide twin XL bed all by yourself. This is a great song for when you want to remember how nice it felt to be held in another human’s arms—for the 5 seconds he would do that before telling you he had a big paper due Monday and, you know, it might be best if you both got a good night’s sleep. That means you should go.
What Goes Around...Comes Around—Justin Timberlake
Okay. Okay. Okay. LISTEN!!! This song dropped when we were all in middle school, so we were too preoccupied making sure we were layering as many A&F camis under our matching polo shirts as possible to realize that this song is a fucking banger. Someone did our pal Justin so dirty. This is also a great breakup song because it’s, like, 7 full minutes long, so you can really wallow. Don’t have time for that? Just want some quick catharsis between classes? Skip right to that angry coda. Holy shit. Our 12-year-old selves had no idea.
Anything by Sufjan Stevens or The National
If you were so into that guy that these songs start resonating with you, you’re fucked. You’re done. Time to transfer.
Elastic Heart—Sia
Sometimes you really need to scream, and if you do so with Sia in the background, you can just claim you were singing along with her. Boom—plausible deniability.
It’s Quiet Uptown—Original Cast of Hamilton
I understand this is about the death of Alexander Hamilton’s eldest son Philip, but it’s just sooo sad, right?! Also, Alexander and Eliza had another son and named him Philip, too, which is a rebound if I ever saw one and proof that you’ll be just fine.
Goodbye Earl—Dixie Chicks
If you’ve read all the way to the end of this that’s more than enough time wasted on some dude. It’s time to get back in the game. Kill that son of a bitch and move on.

Smokey Stories: The Capsule Car
We begin this episode on the first day of January 1964. Smokey has “survived” his Speedway experience to this point and has reached a stage where conventional Indy car design and construction won’t get the job done, at least to his reckoning. He sketches out a combination of turbine engine and a fiberglass body that weighs “five ounces to a square foot.” Among other changes to conventional chassis components (including aluminum brake drums and an experimental Corvette aluminum independent drive assembly) he plans to use a “rubber fuel cell” carrying the customary seventy-five gallons of fuel.
But most noteworthy concept was that the driver would be placed in a small “capsule as a completely separate component and bolted to the mainframe with five bolts. Also, this will be a one-pedal car. Brake and throttle are combined in one dual function control. The clutch and gearshift will be in gearshift control in one lever.” Actually, it worked out quite well with three speeds forward, plus reverse gear with just cams and cables. “Well, hell, what do you expect from a drawing on a sheet of three-foot-wide brown paint masking paper? We got 119 days to build it.”
Not out of the ordinary for Smokey and his planning, an initial problem arose that had a major impact on his intentions. “On March 1, I call the turbine company and say, ‘Ship me the turbine, I need it now.’ They say, ‘It’s ready. Send a check for $34,000.’ I say, ‘You said you’d loan it for free.’ ‘We will, but the overhaul charge will be $34,000 and that’s bare cost.’ “Well, I couldn’t even come up with $3400 bucks, let alone add another zero, so ‘Adios turbine.’ I’ve got enough stuff to put another Offy together.”
But this time around, Smokey has a partner and a sponsor. Over time, he’d at least come to the realization that his prior Indy enthusiasm had gotten him into more than one financial crunch. “The partner is a weasley, central European sharpie named George Chalik. Always wore a couple giant diamonds. And old, rich bastard, owned a rubber company of some kind. The cat was sharp. I signed a worthless contract with him (although Smokey didn’t know this at the time of signing). He owned half the car, never put any money in it. I billed him but couldn’t collect. I said, ‘This ain’t fair.’ He said, ‘Next time you’ll learn how to read a contract.’ ‘OK, you got me,’ but mentally I ignore him.”
Right here, Mr. Chalik learned that messing with Smokey was a high-risk proposition, and there were almost always resulting circumstances that were skewed in Smokey’s favor. “I won’t even let him in the garage. When he did get in, I’d take his glasses and give ’em a hardness with a ball-peen hammer on both lens. They failed. That then changed his number one problem from getting into the garage to getting another pair of ‘cheaters.’ Without ’em he couldn’t see for sour owl crap. Second time I tested his goggles, he got the message. Without glasses, if you grabbed one of those rings and acted like you were going to pull it off his finger, he’d go goofy.”
Actually, it was George Hurst who put up the $40,000 for sponsorship. (More on this a bit later in these episodes. George’s arrival and ensuing Indy experience was apart from the racing and a story unto itself.) “That’s what I had to use, plus I guess ’bout twenty grand that I scraped up.”
But before we proceed on the evolution of his new “side-car” design, it’s worth spending a short time knowing how Smokey came to this departure from then-conventional Indy car design.
“So you’re thinking, where in the hell did you get the plan to build such a goofy car? Over Regansburg, Germany, in 1944, I was driving a B17 carry ten tons of remodeling equipment up there to an aircraft bearing factory when I see a twin-engine, very skinny airplane hauling ass with a small capsule on one side with a pilot in it. Turns out two small shapes with same total frontal area as one single shape have less parasitic drag. But it wasn’t until 1962 I got the answer from that trip to Freidseckhoven, Germany.”
As an aside, this is the type and level of awareness that characterized Smokey, particularly when it came to applying various technologies (although frequently modified from what he initially observed) to his automotive/racing involvements. It was a trait.
But back to the new car. Given his problem with the turbine engine company, “I replace turbine with Offy, not too tough, but one aspect is how you gonna cool the radiator? I give my first idea a try in my wind tunnel and first shot out of the barrel I got it. Man, simple and effective as well. Aluminum, cross-flow radiator (also very lightweight).”
Not out of the ordinary back then, the only manufacturing source for such radiators was the Harrison Radiator company in Rochester, New York. “Somehow, I got the Harrison engineers pissed off at me (really not all that hard for me to do with engineers and lawyers). They say, ‘Don’t ever come back.’ I say, ‘OK, if that’s the way you feel, screw you, too.’ This was not a wise move.”
Now, while sorting out the construction problems with the new design, Smokey realizes that when all is said and done, “I got to have a driver. I need a smaller size hero.” Bobby Johns comes to mind. Right size, brave, pretty damn good driver, never really got a shot in the first class equipment, wasn’t a wall banger. Well, maybe not goofy enough to want6 it. Never know if you don’t ask, right? Answer is, ‘Hell, yes. I’ve been wanting to go to Indy my whole racing life.’ No question. I hit the deal dead center. Come on over to shop so we can fit you in the capsule. He ain’t got a clue, never sat in an open-wheel car, and when he sees how tiny this car is and where he sits I’ve sure it dampened his enthusiasm some. But it’s a deal. No nothing, just a 50-50 prize money split. And because Hurst gearshift was the sponsor, I think maybe George Hurst gave Bobby a couple bucks for expenses.”

Following some last-minute button-up work on the car, that included replacing the initial four-bar rear axle design with a four-radius rod setup in the span of forty-eight hours (a near impossible task for mere mortals), he loads up and heads for Indy.
Not long after his arrival, a new Indy rule pops up that requires cars to have a font bumper. “This pisses me off. Kinda getting like NASCAR now. So for front bumper I trace lil’ Smokey’s hands (his son and a pit crew member) on some Moly plate and chrome ’em up. A pair of steel hands, fingers stretched out, are front bumper. Yup, passed inspection.”
Also, upon his arrival at the Brickyard, he experienced again the skepticism that seemed to follow him in this environment. “When we got to Indy, the unveiling put half of the experts in a state of shock, including the officials. I heard it whispered, ‘That screw-ball’ is nuts, and this proves it.’ But there was a very important one person who loved it. His name was Tony Hulman. Not a bad ally. He owned the farm. And a pretty fair racer from Europe named Colin Chapman just stared at it for hours.”
So there’s no question that throughout Smokey’s participation at Indy what he brought to the track was not only unconventional but innovative. And, in many instances, his competition thought was this was to their disadvantage. Perhaps it was. But you will recall that it was the freedom, or lack of thick rules book, that drew him to the Speedway in the first place. He was simply exercising his rights and allowances that this form of racing enabled.
Next month, we’ll share some bits and pieces about Smokey’s experiences with George Hurst (and ladies) and begin setting the stage for how his Indy exploits gained the attention of some rather significant OEM executives who wanted to utilize his talents at a much higher level than his involvement with refurbishing old Kurtis chassis/car remnants and struggling his way through the financial woes of an Indy newbe.
