This is a clip from a YouTube upload by Mary Knasinski of Sid and Nana in Missouri in 2000. They are asked about working with Andy and Nana recounts an outtake of being unable to stop laughing to get a scene done with Andy that then irritates him because (as Sid says) for Garak he was “in a wetsuit glued to his body” and he can’t stand the heat, thus he wants to get his scenes done as soon as possible so he can get out of costume. Sid then goes on to give THE best impersonation of an angry and irritated Andy that only a best friend can do so wonderfully.

always fun seeing sid posts going out in the wild, just saw a tag on that interview he did say that it was great to see an older (assume older means over 50) guy educating himself on gender and neurodiversity, and im like "first of all, this man is the neurodiverse, and secondly yeah, he genuinely is great on gender related stuff, he's such a fan of his trans and gender-diverse fans" and then i think about how 2020-2021 to me is defined so heavily by his chatting with all of us and creating a safe online space
anyway yeah, he is a good egg!

[Images description: Twelve pictures of Star Trek actors. The phrase "thank you for being both amazing actors and amazing people" is written across most of the images one word at a time, except for the two images in the middle. The middle images are of William Shatner, reading "not you!" and Robert Beltran, reading "or you for that matter". The actors in the other images are George Takei, René Auberjonois, DeForest Kelley, Gates McFadden, Wil Wheaton, Kate Mulgrew, Patrick Stewart, Siddig El Fadil (aka Alexander Siddig), Nichelle Nichols and Leonard Nimoy. End image description.]
Non exhaustive list of course. Many more such cases, in fact feel free to add
(insp)
#i considered putting sid's full name in the image description but i felt that might complicate things for screen reader users#but just so it's in the post i'll put it in the tags#siddig el tahir el fadil el siddig abdurrahman mohammed ahmed abdel karim el mahdi#yes i did copy paste it my memory is shit. i can't even remember my own full name...#(i gave myself like five different middle names at one point because if i'm already changing my name for trans reasons i might as well have#fun with it right but eventually i stopped using them because i literally kept forgetting my own name and had to look it up)#(i still have the note btw and since it seems i won't legally be using that last name anyway (nor any of the middle names) feel free to ask#anyway#star trek#not star trek#(schrödinger's post lol)#oh!!! i forgot one version of sid's name!! here goes#صدّيق الطاهر الفاضل الصدّيق عبدالرحمن محمد أحمد عبدالكريم المهدي#to be fair there's nothing in that tag (right now) but i guess i'm a completionist. or something#the others are ofc already findable because of the image description#oh and just fyi if you wanna add others do feel free to add new trek actors. i didn't include any here essentially because as soon as i inc#include one of them people are gonna complain i didn't include more of them. plus i ran out of space. sorry tawny#oh and to that one anon: i WILL still answer but i needed a break lol#original posts fresh from quark's pussy

Ok I’m FINALLY in a place where I have a minute and brain space to recount some of my Convention highlights:
I got 2 hugs from Nana Visitor. And she told me I look good as a Bajoran, asked me what I do, and when I told her, she asked what I do to take care of myself.
I also got told by multiple people that my eyes look similar to Nana’s (brown eyes next to the nose ridge?)
On Saturday, I wore my Kippah with my cosplay, going from Morning Services to Convention.
At one point, Robert Picardo was talking and John Billingsley was crouching down in order to surprise him and his face turned red. I thought he was having a heart attack.
I put my hand on his shoulder and was like “sir, are you okay,” until someone was like “he’s fine he’s just heckling Bob Picardo.”
Thankfully, he didn’t notice
I was a bit late for my photo with the (present) members of the DS9 cast. They had to bring Penny Johnson-Jerald back, but everyone was very gracious, understanding, and sweet.
“Who am I taking a picture with! Oh my goodness, you are too cute,” she (Penny Johnson-Jerald) also wanted to know my first and last name
They stationed Rosie, my Rollator, “center seat.” Terry Farrell complimented my vest, which I crocheted myself, and very excitedly told me she just learned how to crochet.
(I commented that despite my disability, I am unable to sit still and was taught to cope with hyperactivity and keep myself from fidgeting too bad).
J.G. Hertzler at one point approached me and was like “that [my Rollator] looks handy! Can I take a seat?” And growl chuckled and clapped my shoulder ( Klingon friendly style) when I was like “that is not honorable.”
Later he stopped me again. Apparently, one of his loved ones has MS, uses a rollator, but unlike Rosie, hers is not upright, and they are worried about it contributing to back problems. He wanted to know more, how to find one.
I asked Siddig a somewhat rambling question about Julian’s disability, Eugenics, and how that may have affected his relationship to other disabled characters, and disability in trek vs our Society as a whole.
I had my hand up for a minute and he was like “relax, you got next question” I was kind of embarrassed but then he was like “I don’t think you’re hyperactive, I just want you to not exhaust yourself“
He listened attentively, and he gave a vent like answer where he was like “I see your concerns about Star Trek obscuring / erasing disability… my general thoughts are that we are all racist (i was born in Arab Africa, in Sudan, riddled by geopolitical conflicts, Africans are also racist) we are all ableist, and all have the potential to be disabled . And unfortunately, it’s your job to appeal to me as an able bodied person, and my job to appeal to [another audience member] as a brown person …And why we need to work to change laws first, before we work on everything else. Sorry, didn’t mean to get all political.”
Later, I was sitting outside the venue for mingling because of autism ears and photosensitivity.
And he approached me and was like “hey, how are you doing? I just wanted to check in on you.”
Naturally, I aspirated my saliva and stammered something about avoiding the noise and migraines.
I didn’t think he remembered my name (one point I was attempting to steer around him and he was like “so sorry, sweet thing,”) but later when he was signing my autograph! He did! I did have to spell it, but I usually do anyways bc it’s spelled not the typical way.
At one point, I dropped a change of clothes I had packed and Bonnie Gordon came up to me “Darling, I thought your days as a stripper were over.”
Thank goodness I developed a tolerance for making a damn fool of myself.
There’s so much more. I met many cool people, including several folks I knew previously only on tumblr (hi, @xenobotanist @philosopherking1887 @cardassiangoodreads @ettaberrytea and multiple others I am forgetting just now) I got to hang out IRL with some people from the SidCity Social Club, which previously I only lurked at.
I’m still absolutely filled up with warmth. Like I can take anything
#sorry this is so long#and sappy#last year was incredibly difficult#it’s gotten so much better but I’ve still been really isolated in many ways#Star Trek#convention#dni con#ds9#voy#ent#disability#Rosie the Rollator#julian bashir#siddig el fadil#nana visitor#jg herzler#martok#kira nerys#terry farrell#penny johnson jerald#jadzia dax#kasidy yates#ramblings#personal shit#ngl there’s a demon on my shoulder that’s like “they were nice bc you were the poor little cripple”#but sometimes you have to take kindness at face value#and I also truly think Siddig is among the kindest people I’ve met

Skeebo's siblings.
Fadil, Kiley, Jessie, and Corey. Fadil and Kiley being his biological siblings meanwhile Jessie is his step, and Corey is adopted.
Yes, they adopted a BABY.
Very silly brothers and sister. Obviously they all have a strong bond.
Skeebo loves them! He just gets embarrassed by their shenanigans. Like any middle child would lol..
Fun facts:
• Despite Jessie being spoiled by his mom, he prefers being raised under Skeebo's influence, he thinks he's his favorite. And to be honest, Jessie pretty much is.
• Kiley is more of a light lavender despite taking her genes from Aurora (Skeebo and Fadil's mom) and Sebastian (the father). People confuse her to be Stephanie's kid, but she gets defensive over it since she wants nothing to do with her stepmother.
• Fadil grew up making his own band against most of Stephanie's expectations, he moved out of the house but he comes almost everyday to check up on his younger siblings. Good big brother he is.
• Skeebo and Kiley both know how to fight. Both of them trained themselves boxing just in case, at some point Corey actually bopped Stephanie in the face because of the little guy watching the two of them train. (Not on purpose, but Corey hates her so he lost his temper)
• Jessie doesn't trust a lot of people so it takes a while for him to warm up to them, similar to Xyro.
• Skeebo spoils his siblings A LOT. There is not one gift you can give them that Skeebo already gave them at some point.
-Corey has half of his bed covered in plushies and a hammock filled with the other half above it, a lot were big Squishmallows too. Fadil has tons of rock posters and music equipment. Kiley was able to dye her hair because Skeebo let her, not only that, but she had lots of clothes, action figures, comics and gothic jewelry just from that day. And JESSIE. Oh god, he has toys, clothes, electronics, and a whole small library in the house to himself!
• Lastly, they all care and love each to death, losing one of them sends the rest into an anxious meltdown. Thankfully when Skeebo dies he's able to visit them :')
(I FORGOT SKEEBO'S RING! DAMNIT)

I caught this as well. And I’ve always felt it’s not an OR situation, but an AND situation.
A) I always assumed that it was the futuristic equivalent to ‘my dad works on the docks but I got into Oxford through scholarship. I don’t want the lads to know I’m on scholarship, so I’m staying silent and hiring a dialect expert. Within two weeks, I’ll have a better Oxford accent than any of you, even the locals.’
And
B) it is concretely canon that Julian‘s father never thought Julian was good enough. Instead of learning to love his son for the person he really was, his father literally set out to change absolutely every single thing about him to mould Julian into the ‘perfect’ son. Like, down to his fucking atoms.
The emotional house-sized weight that this just suffocates Julian with almost made that stupid reveal worth it. That his own parents found Julian was so impossible to love, so broken, they had to turn him into a different person down to the molecular level?
Yeah, okay. I mean, that’s a special fucked up level of childhood trauma. How do you even begin to process this? How can you ever trust them— that if you do something else they don’t like, they won’t put you back in that chair to ~fix~? That is a special form of child abuse.
And Sid played that perfectly. It’s clear Sid hated the main reveal about Bashir (many of us did). But the emotional horror of knowing that the only way your parents could love you was to completely rewrite who you are? Yeah. Sid pulled that off.
But back to the accent specifically: the fact that both of these scenarios are not only possible, but equally probable? It’s a beautiful and yet subtle subtextual storytelling that leaves the audience room to fill in the conversations that must have taken place for this to happen.
Also, both scenarios are EXTREMELY British (even more specifically, ENGLISH). Upward mobility of class through education and accent is VERY common in England.
There are parents who will scold their children if they speak with a lower-class (poorer/immigrant areas) accent, even if they have that lower class accent themselves.
There are kids who will do anything to rewrite their own biography so that no one knows they’re really from the wrong side of the tracks by upgrading their accent to a more posh or less regionalised accent so they don’t sound like their parents.
I don’t know if this was the choice of the writer, the casting director, the actor who played his father’s acting choice, or even Sid saying, ‘You know what? Can we cast someone with a lower class accent?’ But it felt extremely intentional and EXTREMELY English. And bonus points of this was a combination of input from several people.
Regardless, this was a brilliant decision, and this seemingly tiny detail adds SO MUCH more to Julian and his identity.
Also, last thing I will say. I think it’s obvious that this issue between Julian and his parents has deeper ramifications considering Bashir is so strongly coded (and confirmed, depending on which writer you ask) as Autistic, and is canonically Queer (depending on the writer you ask).
These are relevant, fascinating and valid readings into the ramifications of neurodiversity and queerness needing to be ‘fixed’ for the comfort and convenience of neurotypical cis-hets before they can love their ~broken~ Autistic Queer child can hit home for a LOT of us.
I'm surprised that I haven't come across anyone else talking about how fascinating it is that Julian Bashir and his father do not have the same English accent. Like, the implications, y'all.
Julian sounds much more upper class than his father, which would seem to indicate one of two things, either:
a) Julian adopted his accent to deliberately distance himself from his father.
or
b) Julian learnt his accent at a young age at the insistence of his father to further his air of sophistication.
Either way, it certainly adds another facet to Julian's Parental Angst.
#I still hate their big reveal for him tho and I’m not going to change my mind.#julian bashir#star trek#ds9#deep space nine#English accents#English class system#upgrading class through education and accent#someone knew this was a peculiarly ENGLISH thing to do#accents#post accents#posh accents but lower class#neurodiversity#fucking cis-hets trying to fucking fix a brilliant and delightful autistic gay#neurodivergent#coded autistic#coded autism#coded queer#is it even coding queer when it’s so clear that Bashir is one of us?#alexander siddig#siddig el fadil

Hello. I just got in contact with a group in Seattle making "solidarity" art and I wanted to know what that means to you. Is acknowledging the horrors in Gaza the most effective way to make Palestinians feel seen? Or is there more value in incorporating symbols of resilience, like olive trees, watermelons, and spoons?
By acknowledging, I mean create something enraging, like depicting the drastically different living conditions on the Palestinian and Israeli sides of the border wall. Healthy people in open farmland on one side and a warzone on the other. Or is it better to include a little hope? One idea I've been mulling over is painting a Palestinian child and IDF solider in a way that suggests David and Goliath (I found out the most common charge against Palestinian youths is throwing rocks). Another is Gaza as a torn tapestry with Mother Palestine sewing over and repairing the rips with tatreez.
I guess the real question is: Do you think most Palestinians would appreciate an attempt at comfort, or is it better to simply grieve with them?
Thank you so much for sending this in. My personal take is the most inspiring imagery are symbols of resistance. For example, this poster is embedded in many Palestinians' minds (click) as a prime example of resistance. I love images of olives and flowers not because they're soft, but because they represent life to me. Something I also adore is Rafeef Ziadah's poem "We Teach Life, Sir" and Samah Fadil's "Then, A Palestinian was Born," as words that speak to me as core parts of Palestinian resistance.
I think you can definitely mix strength and grief, or comfort and grief together when talking about Palestine. Refaat said it best: "the most dangerous thing I have is an expo marker but if an Israeli soldier were to come to my house I would use that expo marker and throw it at them." To us, the idea that we have to resist is grief and the grief moves us to resist. I personally really love the david and golaith imagery because it reminds me of the poster below.
I guess this is all to say that you can mix them together, the grief of seeing people dying and the strength of resistance against the oppression. What's the most effective thing is portraying the truth: Israel kills and Palestine resists.
Here is the image. I highly encourage everyone to print out this poster and post it around town if you're able. Or even post it around social media if you can, and link back to palarchive so that people can see there's so much palestinian art and history that they can explore.
