Dramatic skies poured outside on the eve of the Baftas, but the intimate corners and warming fireplaces of 5 Hertford Street drew in Britain’s best-loved talents and Hollywood stars for the annual Charles Finch and Chanel party. Emily Blunt and Tom Ford kissed hello, before collecting glasses of champagne and going over to greet Gwendoline Christie and Giles Deacon. As the mariachi band played a lively set, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, George MacKay and Minnie Driver chatted together, while Bel Powley and Douglas Booth unwound after a busy day, having first attended a birthday lunch for Powley’s mother, before the Simone Rocha A/W 24 fashion show, declaring with intent: ‘Now we can relax!’

Bob Geldof and Mariella Frostrup linked arms to lead the charge down to dinner, followed by Isla Fisher, who was admiring the interiors. Once everyone was seated, Charles Finch addressed the room: ‘It has been an incredible year for cinema,’ he said, also paying homage to his co-host Chanel and its historic affinity with film – creating haute-couture outfits for productions such as the New Wave Last Year at Marienbad, and countless memorable red-carpet looks. Over lobster salad and poussin, conversation and wine flowed: the nominees Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were deep in conversation, and Richard E Grant caught up with his Saltburn director Emerald Fennell. Last year’s winner Emma Mackey was all smiles in anticipation of presenting the Rising Star Award, saying, ‘It’s quite mad, I’ve no idea who will get it, so I hope I don’t mess it up.’ It was almost midnight when guests began to descend on the dancefloor, where the party was only just beginning.

Sunrise on the Reaping Meta (Part 1)

All right, my lovelies, the time has come.

It’s Sunrise on the Reaping time, and I’m back with some meta.

For reference, I adore the original trilogy, with Catching Fire being my favorite. However, I LOVED The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Every bit of social commentary—every speck of misinterpretation from the original trilogy—is explained in Ballad. It’s like Collins got ticked that people didn’t understand her point and decided to bash people over the head with it. So far, Sunrise on the Reaping isn’t giving me the tingles the same way, but I do think it’s fabulous.

Major spoilers below:

In Panem, it’s the Second Quarter Quell—the 50th Hunger Games with double the number of tributes from each of the twelve districts. This is the games Haymitch Abernathy wins and Madge’s aunt does not survive, and the end result is Haymitch using the force field around the arena to mock the Capitol. None of this is a spoiler, as it’s revealed in the original trilogy, but there are lots and lots and lots of gaps filled in so far—all of which fans of the Hunger Games have been clambering for over the years.

On the first page of the book, we learn that Haymitch’s birthday is July 4, which means his birthday is always marked by the trauma of the reaping. His family consists of his mother, his younger brother Sid, and himself. Lenore Dove, a member of the Covey, is his girlfriend and the love of his life, and he works for a woman who distills white liquor for the town (Hattie, not Ripper). At age 16, Haymitch doesn’t drink (obviously, something that will change following his victory in the 50th Games), and he’s exceptionally less cynical than the Haymitch who mentors Katniss and Peeta 24 and 25 years later.

Because we’ve already had the worldbuilding in the original trilogy and prequel, there’s some skimming over the history of the Games and the reaping ceremony, which doesn’t hurt the flow of the narrative at all. Instead, we’re reintroduced to the Covey and its members. Clerk Carmine and Tam Amber reappear, both as adults and as caretakers to Lenore Dove. There’s no mention of Maude Ivory, and Haymitch doesn’t know about Lucy Gray Baird. There is a discussion of the Baird cousins and extended family, and it’s confirmed that Mr. Everdeen is related to the Covey. In addition, Katniss’ parents’ names are revealed, and it’s clear that Haymitch and Katniss’ father were close friends. Peeta’s father’s name is also revealed, but he’s characterized as a dumb oaf at the Reaping (Otho is a Roman name, which I find odd in District 12.).

Haymitch clearly loves his little brother in a similar way as Katniss adores Prim. His mother takes in laundry and is strong and capable in the same way Gale’s mother is after her husband dies. There’s no time for weakness or grief as she works to raise her family, and Haymitch obviously appreciates her for her strength.

During the lead up to the Reaping, Lenore Dove is introduced, and her rebel nature comes through in Haymitch’s recollections about her. She’s similar to Lucy Gray in her rebellion (putting the snake in the mayor’s daughter’s dress). In particular, Haymitch is positive Lenore Dove attempted setting the reaping stage on fire by burning a Panem flag under the stage. There’s a brief discussion of the illegality of burning the flag, but Haymitch seems unperturbed about anything that has to do with the Capitol.

Some origin stories are revealed throughout part 1 (The Birthday) including these:

The Mockingjay pin was Maysilee’s (which we knew from the original trilogy). What wasn’t revealed until this book is that Tam Amber (a Covey member) fashioned the pin in addition to one for Merrilee (Madge’s mother), although she promptly lost it down a well. Maysilee doesn’t like the pin and refuses to wear it, which puts her and Lenore Dove at odds with each other.

Burdock (a root with healing powers) and Asterid (a flowering plant) are the names of Katniss’ parents. Burdock and Haymitch are close friends, and Haymitch is closely connected to the Covey (including Burdock Everdeen).

Haymitch’s father dies in a mining accident the same way Katniss and Gale’s fathers do.

Beetee is a victor who’s son also participates in the Second Quarter Quell. That’s how he and Haymitch meet.

Wiress and Mags are mentors for District 12, which is how Haymitch meets them.

Plutarch is the cameraman for District 12, which is how he and Haymitch meet. In addition, he’s a member of a powerful family, and he overtly questions the treatment of the tributes and why they don’t rebel. It’s obvious from this storyline that Plutarch is laying the groundwork for the Revolution as far back as the Second Quarter Quell and bringing in Haymitch, Beetee, Wiress, and Mags then.

Lenore Dove loves geese (and is protective of birds of all varieties), which is likely the reason Haymitch raises geese in the epilogue of Mockingjay.

The Reaping scene is as terrible as always, with Haymitch escaping the original drawing. The second male who’s called flees the square instead of going up on stage, and he’s shot in the head by peacekeepers. His mother wails over the body, Lenore Dove attempts to comfort her, and Haymitch rushes to her aid. That’s how he ends up becoming the second male tribute. The fact that Haymitch is not officially reaped until the Third Quarter Quell is interesting.

Effie Trinket is a delight compared to the District 12 escort in this book. I don’t have enough words to express my disgust for her.

Haymitch and Lenore Dove have a discussion about the sun rising on the reaping and whether or not there’s a possibility of a day dawning without the Games. There’s a lot of symbolism, most of which I’ll probably revisit after I’ve read the entire book, but it does somewhat explain why the “obscure” quote from the original series was used for Katniss in marketing for the book and movie—“The sun persists in rising, so I make myself stand.” Haymitch also mentions making his “poster” a few times. That’s the name of the third section of the book, but I’m not sure I’ve figured out what that means yet.

Last but not least, the social commentary is alive and well (pun intended) in SOTR. The thing that jumped out at me is the section with the slogans—No Peace, no bread!; No Peace, no security!; No Peacekeepers, No Peace!; and No Capitol, no peace! It’s as obvious as the day is long that this is in reference to “No Justice, No Peace!” The current administration’s dismissal of the Black Lives Matter movement is disgusting, and Collins seems to be making a statement about that. In addition, the slogans are reversed. Peace leads to bread, and peace leads to security. There is no mention of justice, which is endemic to Panem. Justice is not slaughtering innocent children on the altar of the nation. Never mind that the US continues to do that by not passing gun reform.

As the year 2023 is nearly drawing to a close...

So much had happened in this year ,the good and the bad . In the beginning of this year 2 days after new years day i got sick with the flu bug (it was horrible),my aunt and my brother in law had both died of cancer ,a person i had grew up with had died of a sudden heart attack at the age of just 38 (our birthday is on the same day October 13th) ,my cat princess had died of kidney failure, the day after she had died i had received an unexpected surprise, my brother had send me a laptop, what a dream come true that was for me cos I've always wanted one and now i finally got it .

Matthew perry died tragically and unexpectedly, the priscilla movie came out, an 24 hour Power outage had happened in south Africa all over, a flooding had happened on the 25th of September and so many other things had happened in this year too....

But luckily i had no drama with the people i am role-playing with on this other rp website which i won't mention, but then i had made the mistake by putting on the anon asks cos i had got attacked by anons over the priscilla movie all cos or my opinions over it and also what i had written about it too ,i swear i will never put on the anon asks ever again on here out of fear that the anons will bash and verbally attack me again on here .

And then i had also suffered major health issues, tackling with that but i had survived it thankfully.

And then to you all my wonderful and fabulous followers for still sticking with me on here eventhough i don't roleplay on here anymore after the whole tj hammond/bucky barnes anon drama on here that had took place a year before....

I thank you all for sticking with me on here and still be here for me in 2024.

Oh what a year this truly was...

Good morning!  I hope you slept well and feel rested?  Currently sitting in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day.

First of all, happy birthday to The Trouble.  Last year we had a wonderful family bash for her 60th birthday, this year, back to her annual tradition, I’ve bought her tickets for the theatre.  This is one resilient woman!  Trust me when I tell you: this is one tough cookie!  It was a small family unit, just she, her twin sister, her mum and her dad.  Her twin sister dies (so we inherit two more children), then my sister dies, then her mum dies, then my dad dies, then her dad dies, and now my brother has passed.  She had a small family unit and they are all gone!  My family unit was five and now it’s two (me and Lady Wesker.)  So, The Trouble has had to deal with a lot of loss (not to mention the deaths of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.)  And, if all that loss wasn’t enough, she has to live with me!  “Is there no end to her pain?” I hear you say.  So, if you say, “Happy birthday!” to The Trouble today, know that you are talking to a very formidable woman!

A thought that crossed my mind the other day (and you’re probably thinking, “Man, you think about some weird shit!”) was about completion.  Staying in the moment.  I don’t want to get too saucy on a Tuesday but … you know about foreplay … but how about afterplay?  The dotting of the I’s, the crossing of the T’s.  Finishing the job probably.  Completion.  Staying in the moment.  The afterglow is nice but, after two minutes, don’t jump up and talk about something totally unrelated and random.  If you’ve mutually agreed on a quickie, it’s okay if you both go about your business soon after but, if it’s a more considered and luxurious experience, keep the mood and the moment in a very loving place.  We don’t often get the opportunity to demonstrate our appreciation, so use that fabulous time to appreciate one another.  Tea, toast and meaningful conversation help to maintain and prolong the intimacy.  The things that cross my mind!

Bowser Jr.’s Grand Birthday Bash

The halls of Bowser’s Castle were alive with energy. Banners of red, gold, and black hung from every stone wall, torches burned brighter than usual, and the grand throne room had been completely transformed into the most extravagant party space in all of the Koopa Kingdom. A massive cake—easily the size of a battle tank—stood in the center, decorated with frosting shaped like Bowser Jr.’s signature bandana. Colorful balloons and streamers covered every surface, and tables overflowed with gifts, sweets, and all the best food a royal feast could offer.

Today wasn’t just any day—it was Bowser Jr.’s birthday, and everyone in the castle was determined to make it the best day ever.

The Spoiled Birthday Prince Arrives

Loud trumpet fanfare blared as Kamek, floating above the ground with his usual serious expression, cleared his throat and declared:

“Presenting the birthday boy, royal heir to the Koopa Kingdom, Prince Bowser Jr.!”

The doors swung open, and Bowser Jr. strutted in with the biggest, smuggest grin on his face. He was dressed in a special royal shell polish, a new spiked bracelet on his wrist, and his favorite bib perfectly tied around his neck. He absolutely loved being the center of attention, and today was all about him.

The Koopalings, standing together in a row, burst into cheers.

“Happy birthday, Jr.!” Larry called excitedly, bouncing on his heels.

“Hope you’re ready for the ultimate party!” Ludwig added with a regal nod.

Morton clapped his massive hands together. “YES! BIRTHDAY! BIG CELEBRATION! FUN TIME FOR BABY BROTHER!”
