Red. There is so much red. It’s not just the uniforms, it’s the red from the inside. That kind of red belongs on the inside. But here it was. Everywhere. On her legs, her arms, her hands. On his hands. On their hands. They were covered in red. That kind of red was supposed to be on the inside. “You look good in red” Sumi used to tell Ryo after he transferred to Senomen
But this wasn’t the kind of red she was talking about. Not this. Never this. Loud groans and heavy breathing along with the background music from the karaoke machine fills the air but in Sumi’s ears, it’s all white noise; her ears are ringing. There is blood running down the back of her neck, probably staining the wall she’s leaned against. But it’s nothing compared to the puddle of blood Ryo’s so-called best friend is lying in. Ryo’s coming closer. Closer, closer, closer. “Sumi'' he whispers
This was a bad idea. He knew it. She knew it. This should have never happened. It would have never happened if Sumi had only listened to Ryo in the first place.
Sumi Sato was Ryo’s first love. Or well, he still loves her. Ryo met her in middle school after his father went bankrupt. They became friends instantly. Sumi was the light of his dull, dark life. She just lit up everything around her. He thinks she’s mixed. She doesn’t look fully Japanese. Maybe. Ryo asked her once but Sumi said she didn’t know because she was adopted by the Satos. Sumi was kind and sweet and just fucking perfect. Just like Sumi, the Sato family were all kind and down to earth. Sumi was their only daughter and after school, she helped out at a shop owned by the family that sold noodles and dumplings. The shop was actually very successful and they were never short on money. Sumi’s mother hired Ryo’s mom after his father got hired as a chauffeur by the Amagai Family. It didn’t take too long for Ryo’s family to come out of bankruptcy thanks to Sumi’s mother constantly giving his mother raises. Ryo thinks it’s because they know they were broke. But nonetheless, he and the rest of his family were grateful.
It’s around the end of middle school that Ryo asks her out. Sumi says yes. Oh, Ryo was absolutely obsessed with her. Not that he wasn’t now. Ryo adores Sumi. He always had. She’s so so pretty and he’s always loved her. Ryo would do anything for Sumi. Anything to make her happy, anything to keep her safe. Anything.
In high school, they see each other a little less. Ryo goes to Nami High and Sumi to Seiho Girls School. He takes over Nami High not too long later and Ryo makes sure to take time out of his day to go see Sumi. It was around the middle of second year that Ryo goes down to the Sato Family’s shop and he sees Sumi waving to a blonde as well as a tall guy with brown curly hair and a blue bandana tied around his head. Both boys were clearly wearing black uniform pants. They pass by him and Ryo makes sure to get a good look at both of them. “So are you going to stop being all depressed sleepy lion?” The curly haired one asks
“If you stop calling me that” the blonde replies shaking his head
Ryo heads over to the shop and smiles softly at Sumi. He then realizes that the two boys that were just there were from Oya High. “You’re friends with boys from Oya?” He asks
Sumi only nods. Ryo doesn’t ask any more questions but it did make him realize that he didn’t know much about Sumi outside of their little bubble. She doesn’t really talk that much about her other friends unlike Ryo who spills out his entire life story to her— from what he ate, drank and did. Of course, he was going to tell her about Kōhei Amagai. “I want to meet him” Sumi says shaking his arm like a little kid
Ryo gives her a bittersweet smile and put the arm she was shaking around her shoulders, pulling her into his side. “Ah~ we haven’t met for years Sumi… I don’t even know where he goes”
That night, Ryo’s father makes him transfer to Senomen Technical High School for Kōhei Amagai. Ryo is confused. He hasn’t spoken much to his father ever since he started for the Amagai family, and now this was weird. But, he agreed. “Do your best for the boy okay?” His father told him that morning after his transfer
Ryo agreed. Sumi’s a little sad since they will see each other less but she tells him he looks good in the red. Ryo thanks her with a quick kiss on her head and Sumi tells him he missed and points to her lips. Ryo smiles. He loves her so much.
Ryo meets his childhood best friend again. Ryo is… Confused. Confusion would honestly be an understatement in this case. Where had the little boy who saved him from bullies when they were kids gone? Kōhei seemed to do everything with the means of paying people for what they do. Capitalistic. He was more capitalistic now. Friendships were not supposed to be capitalistic so why was Kōhei making him earn his keep? At first, it had been okay. Kind of. He was just a pawn but something was better than nothing. Ryo was just holding onto the childhood memory of Kōhei at that point. Then came what Kōhei was actually planning. Takeover SWORD starting with Oya. Yeah, hell no. Ryo would never admit it out loud but he was never for the plan. But as things began to get serious and the memory of Tsukasa Takajo leaving the Sato Family’s shop at least twice a week fills his head, Ryo realizes he’s going to have to break up with Sumi so she doesn’t get caught in the crossfire— and so he doesn’t have to make the choice of choosing between Kōhei or Sumi in case Kōhei somehow finds out about her. “What? Why?” Sumi doesn’t want to break up
Ryo doesn’t want to either but he needs to keep Sumi safe. Safe from what? He himself doesn’t know either but there is this nagging voice in the back of his head telling him to. The voice is telling him to keep Sumi a secret. Sumi is his and Kōhei should never find out about her. Why the voice is telling him that? Ryo doesn’t know. But he will do anything to keep her safe even if that means breaking her heart. “Is this about your childhood friend?” She asks with a frown
The way she’s looking at him makes him want to tell her that he really doesn’t want to break up with her. But it’s for the best. “Will you still come around?” Sumi asks him, eyes filled with tears, finally realizing he isn’t going back on his decision
Ryo hugs her tight then kisses the top of her head. “Of course, I will Sumi… I’ll always be here”
She wants to tell him not to leave. Ryo knows that. He always knows what she’s thinking. She’s his after all. But Sumi also knows there is nothing she can do to change his mind.
Ryo doesn’t really keep his promise of coming around to the shop. He doesn’t want Kōhei to find out about her. But he does make a few of the boys who are only loyal to him and not Kōhei keep watch on Sumi during the whole ordeal with Oya High(because he’d rather kill her than let her be with anyone else). The entire thing is a bust. Not only does Ryo have to against his morals of a fair fight, but they take Tsukasa Takajo hostage. Senomen loses everything in the end and Kōhei makes a whole bunch of more bad decisions and Ryo stops Kōhei from stabbing Fujio Hanaoka. A fucking shit show is what it is. Not only does he now have a scar but Ryo also spilled his guts out Kōhei in front of Oya High, Housen and Suzuran but unlike what most people think, things haven’t changed that much between them. Or well, kind of. Now, the plans are more stable, their school is more united now the leaders aren’t just being paid. It’s kind of okay now. That is until Sumi calls him after a long while and yells at him. Sumi’s cousin was hospitalized and her cousin’s name was Tsukasa Takajo. Ryo wants to jump off the roof into a pit of fire. How could he be so dumb? Sumi was mad at him and it was all Kōhei’s fault. Ryo was angry but he couldn’t say anything because that meant revealing who Sumi was and it could possibly put his dad’s job in danger.
So, Ryo makes a visit, first to the hospital where Tsukasa is and apologizes. Thankfully, Tsukasa is a very forgiving person. But he does feel very bad for the blonde. He’s hooked up to a whole bunch of machines and sat up in a way that only meant his ribs were fractured. He feels bad but he knows it wasn’t him that caused these injuries. Their fight had been fair. The one between Tsukasa and Kōhei hadn’t. Ryo sometimes has nightmares of the moment the pipe made contact with Tsukasa’s head. It’s scary. Tsukasa could have died and Ryo realizes he could have been one of the reasons for it. “I don’t think Amagai is a good friend to you” Tsukasa tells him
He isn’t. But Ryo won’t admit that out loud. They were getting there. There, meaning the kind of friendship Tsukasa and Fujio had, but they still had a long way to go. “You’re Sumi’s cousin…?” Ryo asks him
Tsukasa laughs. “Is that why you’re here? You think you’ll have a better time getting her to forgive you if you come to me first?”
Ryo is a little confused. “You—”
“Yeah, I know about you two now. She was pretty surprised when Fujio and Nakaoka told her about what happened. I think Sumi’s still having a hard time believing it” Tsukasa tells him
Sumi was kind. Too kind. Ryo knew that and clearly, Tsukasa knew that too. “Is she mad?” Ryo asks looking nervous
He’s not going to consider Tsukasa as a threat to his and Sumi’s relationship. Family members are allies, not enemies. As long as he’s in Tsukasa and Sumi’s parents' good graces, they are not enemies. “You might just want to talk to her. I don’t really care but maybe you should rethink your friendship with Amagai” Tsukasa says simply
Ryo knows he should make Tsukasa like him. So, they exchange numbers and plan to hang out when Tsukasa gets discharged.
Next, Ryo goes to see Sumi. He waits for her outside of Seiho Girls School. He sees Sumi tiredly trudge down the pathway out of school as the bell rings. She’s already pulling her blazer off and stuffing it into her bag, replacing it with a zip-up hoodie. Sumi sees him and Ryo smiles at her. He can see her trying to hide her smile. It’s cute. There is a kind of hold first love tends to have on people. Letting them go is always the hardest. Ryo knows this and he plans to use it to his advantage. Sumi, as expected, forgives him. She is his after all.
Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi,Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi, Sumi,
Ryo thinks he should get her name tattooed on his skin.
(or maybe he should get his name tattooed on her skin so everyone knows who she belongs to)
Ryo loves her. He loves her so much. Maybe it’s unhealthy, maybe it’s not. He doesn’t care, he just loves her. Ryo wants to get back together with her but he wants to wait for the perfect time. Sumi is a hopeless romantic so he wants to wait for the moment she won’t expect to ask her out again. He knows she still wants to be together. Sumi had previously fussed over the jagged scar on his palm, a remnant from when he saved Fujio from getting stabbed. She also thanked him for saving Fujio. Ryo told her it was nothing. So right now, they’re sitting in Sumi’s room on her bed. Sumi’s books are long forgotten on her desk as she rambles to Ryo about Tsukasa and how the blonde hasn’t been taking any rest and how he’s stressing her and Fujio out. Ryo listens. He always does. Sumi talks and he listens. It’s always been like that. Ryo doesn’t mind not talking. He likes Sumi’s voice. He likes the expressions she makes while telling him stories. He likes how she gets excited, how she smiles, how her eyes smile with her mouth. He loves everything and wants to protect her. That’s why he made sure to tell the boys in charge of watching her to keep up the good work. “You’re not listening” Sumi says with a frown
Her lips are pouted and Ryo wants to lean over and kiss her. “I am” he says and scoots closer to her
Their knees are touching now. She’s wearing shorts and so is he. Ryo can’t get enough of how her skin feels against his own. “You’re not” she tells him again “What did I last say to you?”
“You asked to meet Amagai. You said you wanted to beat him up for hurting Tsukasa” Ryo repeats
Sumi stares for a moment and Ryo wants nothing more than to grab her and pull her into his arms. “You were listening…”
Ryo smiles this time. “I’m always listening Sumi” He pauses and reaches over, brushing a stray fringe away from her eyes “You just look so pretty, I couldn’t help but stare”
Ryo always tells Sumi the truth. Maybe not the complete truth all the time, but always the truth. He watches as her cheeks flush pink. “No I’m not” she says biting the inside of her cheek
She’s nervously fiddling with her hands. Her fingers have spots and smears of ink on them. An idea pops up in his head but he immediately decides against it. He couldn’t. One thing leads to another and now Sumi’s in his lap. They’re kissing. She has her hands in his hair and he’s got his hands on her clothed waist. He pulls away only for a moment to take in her features. Pretty, pretty, pretty. Her eyes are watery, lips swollen slicked with spit. She’s so pretty and she’s his. Ryo kisses her neck once and then uses all his strength, maybe even more than he used to try and beat Fujio, to stop himself from pulling Sumi’s shirt off. He can’t. He shouldn’t. Sumi is as beautiful as a goddess and you don’t touch goddesses(especially not in the way he wants to touch her). Ryo isn’t really religious. Actually not at all but there is just something about Sumi that makes his mind twist in turn in questions of things that can never be answered. “You’re so pretty Sumi” he murmurs, pressing his forehead against her’s “So so pretty”
Ryo never cared about religion or god but he is afraid of sinning every time he looks at Sumi because she surely can’t be revealed to the likes of him. Muttering prayers of devotion to her can’t truly be his intent as genuine as it may be because he dreams of ensnaring her. So no, he won’t look at her skin, he won’t pull off her shirt like he wants because he doesn’t want to worship her like the goddess she appears to be. No, he desires to ruin her because who wants tarnished pearls that can no longer shine?
Ryo has never gotten a new phone in his life. He’s always gotten hand-me-downs. It was usually from his dad. But today, Kōhei gifted him a phone. The latest iPhone, the same as his. “Um… You didn’t have to” Ryo barely squeaks out
But Kōhei is already grabbing his old phone and using a pin to eject his sim card and put it into the new phone. “Nonsense,” Kōhei tells him rolling his eyes “I’m not letting my right-hand man have a fucking Samsung”
Their relationship isn’t as bad anymore. Ryo doesn’t really understand why he’s stuck with Kōhei even after all that but maybe it’s because he loves too hard. “Uh-huh” Is all Ryo says
Kōhei hands him the phone and proceeds to show him how to use the ios system. It’s not to hard. Ryo gets it instantly. He makes an iCloud account and texts Sumi from it first, telling her he’s got a new phone. All his photos get transferred. It probably wasn’t a good idea to do that right away because Kōhei sees a photo of him and Sumi— the aftermath of a TikTok trend where they make half a heart with lipstick on one cheek then press them together to make a whole heart. It was a cute picture. Sumi’s smile is cute. “Who’s this?” Kōhei’s got a grin on his face
Ryo tries to grab the phone but Kōhei only moves away, running with his phone. “She’s so pretty Ryo! Who is she?!” Kohei is swiping through pictures now
Ryo is chasing after him, running around Senomen’s gym in circles. “Come on Ryo! I didn’t know you had a girlfriend!” Kōhei is thoroughly enjoying this, they even have a crowd now, the upper-ranking guys watching them amused
“Kōhei give it back!” Ryo yells
He’s barely grabbed onto him when the phone in Kōhei hand rings. Sumi’s name flashes on the screen. From Ryo’s reaction, Kōhei knows exactly who it is. “Oh my, is it her?” Kōhei says, grin widening “Sumi? What a pretty name Ryo! How about I talk to my best friend’s girlfriend he’s never told me about—”
“She’s cousins with Takajo, she doesn’t like you” Ryo says quickly
Kōhei’s smile fades into a look of confusion. The ringing of the phone stops as well. “Huh?”
Everyone else in the gym stops as well. They all knew how Kōhei tortured Tsukasa half to death. It was brutal. “Yeah um…” Ryo scratches the back of his neck “She barely forgave me but she definitely doesn’t like you”
It was a half-truth. Sumi doesn’t like Kōhei but she still wants to meet him. “Oh…” Kōhei is even more confused
Ryo sees a look of disappointment but it’s only for a moment before the childish amusement paired with cruelty comes back. “That’s too bad” Kōhei says with a clearly fake sad look “she’s so pretty”
Ryo tries snatching the phone back but Kōhei moves away again. “Why did you never tell me about her?” The white-haired boy asks
It was like telling your current lover about your ex. So awkward, so weird. “Well… We broke up when I transferred” Ryo says, hoping Kōhei would drop the topic
Kōhei’s grin widens. Ryo does not like that look. “But I’m planning on asking her again” He says quickly before the other boy says something that might make him knock out a few teeth
Kōhei stares at him for a moment then gives his phone back. Ryo internally lets out a sigh. “You think she’ll say yes?” Kōhei asks him
Ryo nods without thinking. “We made out like yesterday”
Kōhei nudges him in the chest, giving Ryo a suggestive look. Ryo only shakes his head. He didn’t want Kōhei to find out about Sumi but he guesses it was bound to happen at some point. But something was nagging Ryo at the back of his head.
“I wanna meet him” Sumi says, sitting in front of her mirror with one eye closed as she tries out a new eyeliner style
Ryo looks up from his new phone. “Meet who?”
Sumi gives him a look from the mirror. “The guy who almost killed my cousin”
Ryo chokes. He sits up. “Nah-uh” he tells her
Sumi puts down her eyeliner wand and picks up a makeup wipe, wiping away the mess of black liquid around her eyes. “Why not?”
She wipes it all away and Ryo watches her, hoping she drops the topic. “You want to go out tomorrow?” Ryo asks, trying his best to distract her
Sumi gets up on the bed and sits in front of him. Their knees are touching again. Not skin-to-skin like last time. Ryo’s wearing sweatpants and Sumi’s wearing shorts. He wishes he wore shorts. Her oversized shirt is falling off her shoulder exposing her shoulder and bra strap. “Yeah. I wanna come to Senomen with you” She says
Ryo pretends not to hear her and leans over, pulling the sleeve that has fallen off her shoulder back up. He then proceeds to simply put her clothes back in place, straightening out her shirt, lightly tugging down her shorts that had ridden up a bit too far up her thighs and— Sumi grabs his hand. “Ryo” she says, her lips are all pouty again “please?”
He sighs. “No Sumi, you can’t meet him”
“Are you embarrassed of me?” She trying to make him feel bad now
Ryo only shakes his head and laughs softly. “Why would I be embarrassed of someone as pretty as you, hm?” he moves closer as he speaks to her “I just don’t want you to meet him… I want to keep you to myself. Like my little secret”
Sumi very clearly likes what she’s hearing. But she’s stubborn. “Just one time Ryo! Please?”
It’s so cute when she begs. Ryo thinks she’s adorable. He wants to keep her all to himself. Not in whatever cute way Sumi is more than likely thinking of right now. He wants to hide her from the world, keep her all for himself. Her smiles, her tears, her skin— She’s his. “Why do you want to meet him so bad?” Ryo asks simply, a gentle smile on his face
Sumi moves in closer. “Because I wanna meet the guy who almost killed my favourite cousin and I know nothing about your life outside of this”
‘This’ meaning their little bubble. Ryo didn’t know anything about Sumi outside their bubble until after the fight with Oya. So of course she’d want to know about him. “You are my life Sumi” he tells her
Sumi rolls her eyes. “Yeah that’s why you broke up with me”
Ryo smiles even harder now. Oh, she was so so cute. He pulls her over and now she’s in his lap again. “Oh baby” he murmurs, holding her waist tight with one hand and the other going up to hold her chin “You make me want to take a bite out of you”
Sumi laughs. She can never stay mad at him for too long. Sumi was a very forgiving person. Forgiving, kind, sweet, pretty— and she’s all his. But what he said is true. He wants to take a bite out of her. He wants to split her open, pry apart her ribs and pull out her heart, lick up her blood. He wants to pick apart her bones and suck out the marrow.“That’s cannibalism” she tells him, her hands on his shoulders
Ryo wants to devour her. He pulls her face in a little closer by her chin. “But you’re so pretty, baby. I can’t help it if I want to eat you out— I mean… up”
Sumi flushes red from the innuendo. It’s cute. She’s so cute.
Ryo wanted to crawl into Sumi’s ribcage and sleep next to her heart.
After all, it was his anyway
In the end, Ryo ends up agreeing to let Sumi meet Kōhei. He gave in. She was just to cute and he couldn’t deny her for that long. “She’s coming today?” Kōhei is clearly surprised
Ryo only sighs. It’s Monday and because this was a school full of delinquents where the boys rarely went to class, there was barely anyone here today which meant, less danger for when Sumi comes to visit. Sumi is… Well, Ryo wouldn’t say it directly to Sumi but she is pretty weak. Not only does she not work out but she avoids physical activity like a plague. Along with that she’s got low iron, get dehydrated a lot due to the fact she’s always forgetting to eat and drink water. Not to mention the fact that she’s a picky eater. Not the kind where you’d just get her chicken nuggets and fries and she’ll just eat that, no. When Sumi can’t find anything she likes to eat, she just won’t eat. She’s gotten yelled at by her mother for this a lot, he’s a witness to that. But Sumi just doesn’t change. So not only does she have low iron, but she’s also underweight. Sumi’s weak, it was the best way to put it. But maybe spilling all of that information to Kōhei wasn’t a good idea. He didn’t need to know. Maybe Ryo just needed someone to talk to about Sumi. So he could keep all those thoughts of ruining her under check. “Sounds like you really like her” Kōhei says looking amused
Ryo nods. “How cute” is all Kōhei says after that
Kōhei was obsessed. It was the simplest way to explain it. He just wanted to go through Ryo’s phone and see what he took pictures of. He expected a lot of things. Cars, maybe ones of Kōhei, Senomen and other things. What Kōhei didn’t expect was a girl. A very pretty one. She’s pretty. So so pretty, Kōhei wanted to meet her so bad. Her skin looked soft in the pictures and her hair silky smooth and shiny. Her features were on the softer side and her silhouette was all delicate looking. She looked frail. Kōhei was pretty disappointed to know the girl, Sumi didn’t like him because of her relation to Tsukasa Takajo and how he almost killed the blonde boy. But some things couldn’t be helped. “And uh, Sumi, this is Kōhei Amagai” Ryo says
The Amagai’s picked up the Suzaki’s off their feet. It was mostly all thanks to Kōhei being friends with Ryo in the first place. Sure he was an asshole at first but that was because of all the trust issues he developed in middle school. People using him for his money and connections. Now that he knows Ryo won’t do that for him, Kōhei can be comfortable with him again. “Uh-huh, I know” Sumi narrows her eyes at him
Because of their newfound and rekindled friendship, they shared everything. “Sorry about your cousin Sumi-chan” Kōhei apologizes, but he doesn’t actually mean it
That meant what was Ryo’s was also his.
They’re attacked. Ryo tells Sumi to stay with Kōhei in the gym. She obviously does he says. Sumi is nervous. Kōhei can tell. He watches as she flinches with each loud noise, each crash and yell. He can tell exactly why Ryo was so determined to keep her a secret. Sumi was a real piece of work. Easy on the eyes, pretty voice, oh how perfect. “Hey Sumi,” he says
Sumi’s in her school uniform. Minus the green tie and the brown blazer that was replaced by a grey hoodie. She’s wearing black knee-high socks and the mary jane shoes are replaced with sneakers as well as medium-sized silver hoops in her ears. Her skirt has ridden up a bit and Kōhei’s having a hard time keeping his eyes away from her legs. “It’ll be fine, we’ve beaten these guys many times” Kōhei says
Sumi is fumbling with her fingers nervously. For someone who was dressed pretty rebelliously, ignoring the school dress code that followed students even outside of school grounds, she was pretty jumpy. “Why aren’t you out there fighting?” She asks
Kōhei stares right into her eyes. Clear pretty eyes, all wide and watery, pupils trembling a little from nervousness. It’s cute. So so cute. It’s no wonder Ryo wanted to keep her to himself. A girl like this was meant to be hidden away. Now he can see why Ryo didn’t want to tell him about her. “Ryo and the other boys can handle it” Kōhei says with a shrug “Besides if I’m out there who’s gonna take care of you?”
Sumi looks at him and it looks like she going to say something but a loud crashing sound makes an involuntary whimper leave her lips. Kōhei watches in amusement as she moves closer to him. She’s afraid. It’s so cute. She’s trembling like a little newborn puppy. How cute. Kōhei wants to hide her away. “Hey” Kōhei says, smile never once leaving his lips “What’re you so scared of? You think Ryo would let anything happen to you?”
Sumi shakes her head. “No… But that doesn’t mean I’m not scared”
Oh, Kōhei thinks he’s going to have a stroke. She’s so cute. “Poor thing”
It sounds like he’s mocking her. He’s not. Poor, poor thing so defenceless and scared. It’s no wonder Ryo likes her so much. She isn’t even listening to him right now, doesn’t even realize he’s put an arm around her. Cute, cute, cute. Sumi’s so cute and so so pretty. Kōhei’s always had a fixation on pretty things and Sumi is no exception. Kōhei leans over, closer, closer, closer but then he hears familiar heavy footsteps and the sounds of laughter and yells. Ah~ Ryo’s finished already. Kōhei doesn’t move away from Sumi but he does remove his arm from around her. Ryo comes into view. He’s already washed his hands of the blood and is drying his hands off. The other boys haven’t yet. Splatters of blood stain their skin. It makes Sumi flinch and unconsciously move closer to Kōhei. “That was fast” Kōhei says and leans back into the leather couch
He stretches his arms out and lays one on the sofa behind Sumi. “What the fuck” Sumi says with a frown
She’s still shaking. It’s cute. “Sumi-chan, this is the norm around here Numa Tsuda says with a grin, flopping down on one of the sofa’s across Sumi
Sumi looks sick. From what Ryo has told Kōhei, her cousin has done his absolute best to keep her away from all the violence that came with living in SWORD. It’s clear since she isn’t desensitized to it at all. The sight of blood that isn’t their own on the skin of the Senomen boys is making her sick. How cute. Ryo sits down next to Sumi and spends a few moments just looking at her. Kōhei watches as she moves in closer to him. He grins.
What belongs to Ryo also belongs to him.
It’s been a few weeks since Kōhei met Sumi. They all hang out a lot now— Ryo, Kōhei and Sumi. Kōhei makes sure to take time out so all three of them can go out together. Ryo isn’t sure if he likes this but he isn’t complaining. His best friend is getting along with his (soon-to-be once again) girlfriend and she doesn’t seem to hater Kōhei so much. It’s alright he guesses. Kōhei has become surprisingly perceptive. “You look like you wanna lock her away” Kōhei says with a laugh, scrolling through the pictures of Sumi he has one his phone
They’re sitting in Ryo’s room. His house is across the street from Sumi’s. Sumi isn’t home. She’s off up in Hope Hill with her friends having some girls' day or something. Ryo hates it. He wanted her here with him. “I do” Ryo admits without thinking while also scrolling through the loads upon loads of pictures he had of Sumi on his phone
Sumi is gorgeous. Gorgeous and all his. Ryo loves her so much and maybe he’s drowned too deep in to see that Kōhei is starting to fall in as well. “Won’t be surprised if you do” Kōhei says
Ryo finally registers what Kōhei said to him and he sits up properly. He’s about to his ask him what he means when Ryo’s phone rings. It’s one of the guys watching Sumi. He picks up the call and his heart drops. “Fuck I have to go” Ryo says grabbing his red bomber jacket
Kōhei grabs his red leather jacket, not even bothering to ask what happened as he follows behind Ryo, running out of the house and down the street. It’s clear whatever the phone call was about involved Sumi. They run and run and run, not caring for the burning in their lungs or their legs. They run till they see her. It’s a dingy alleyway not too far from Senomen. He first sees the boys from his school and then the boys from the other school on the ground. “Where is she?” Ryo yells
One of the boys from his school points further down the alleyway. Ryo follows where he pointed and runs over. He sees her. Sumi’s still in her uniform skirt, dressed as she usually is with the blazer replaced with her hoodie. Expect her hoodie, face and legs have patches of dirt in places. She’s trembling, arms around herself in a poor attempt to protect herself. “Sumi” he says and crouches down in front of her
Sumi looks up and sees Ryo. Instantly she jumps into his arms and Ryo tucks her away in his grasp. Sumi was attacked. Someone spread the word about her relation to Tsukasa and Ryo and now she was a target. Ryo was furious. More guys show up from the opposing side. “Take care of her” Ryo tells Kōhei
Kōhei, a little bit too willingly takes Ryo’s place, holding Sumi tight. His hands find their way to any exposed skin he could find, fingers digging in. Sumi is too shaken up to even register the way Kōhei is touching her and Ryo doesn’t notice it either. He’s angry, to focused on beating the stupid little boys who dared to touch what was his.
Maybe he should lock Sumi up. It was the only way he could keep her safe.
More weeks pass after the attack. Ryo’s crazy protective over Sumi and poor poor little Sumi is too blind to notice. Kōhei has noticed it though. Sumi is frail and weak and naïve. She’s so so stupid but Kōhei won’t tell her that. Stupid, stupid pretty little girl. Kōhei wants her too. Ryo hasn’t noticed. No one has(but then again, no one has noticed the dark way Ryo looks at Sumi either). Kōhei is very touchy with Sumi, the same way Ryo is. She hadn’t noticed it before but now that she was alone with Kōhei in the random karaoke room he booked for god knows what, Sumi sees it and Kōhei noticed this too. “Uh… So why here?” Sumi asks hesitantly
Kōhei is scrolling through his phone as background music plays through the speakers around them on a low volume. The flashing lights were on. Sumi wanted to turn them off but she didn’t know how to work anything. “Well there were supposed to be more girls and some more of our guys but the girls cancelled and therefore did the other boys. Thought it would be a waste if we didn’t use the room” Kōhei said we a shrug
They’re in the corner of the room on the huge wrap-around sofa. There is a huge space but Kōhei still chose to sit right next to Sumi. Red lights were blaring in Sumi’s head but she didn’t want to believe that anything was wrong. “When’s Ryo coming?” Sumi asks, hand reaching for her phone on the table in front of her
Kōhei takes it before she can. “He’ll be here soon” and he throws her phone to the other end of the couch
Sumi stares at her phone that’s now far out of reach. “Um… my phone—”
She gets up to go grab it but she’s pulled back down immediately. Sumi looks at Kōhei in shock. There is this uncomfortable feeling brewing in her chest. Something she’s never really felt while with Kōhei alone. This was weird. Really really weird. “You don’t need it” Is all Kōhei says and puts down his phone
He moves in close, closer, closer, closer. Sumi keeps moving back as well but she’s already in the corner. “Kō-Kōhei” She muttered, a hand coming up to press against his chest in a poor attempt to push him away
Now that she thought about it, Kōhei had always been weird. He was always touchy and always making weird comments to her. Sumi can’t remember any of them right now. Red alarms are blaring in her head, telling her to get out, to get away from here but she’s frozen in place. It was an unfortunate thing but that was her response to things like this; from fight, flight and freeze, Sumi would freeze. It was terrible and right now, even worse. Sumi isn’t able to do anything as Kōhei corners her. One of his hands goes lower and lower, touching her bare thigh. She tenses up when the tips of his fingers breach past the hem of her skirt. Her breath gets caught in her throat and words of protest need more energy to come out. She’s silent just staring at him with wide eyes filled with utter terror. Shouldn’t the way she’s looking at him be enough for Kōhei to understand that she doesn’t want this? Sumi wants Ryo. As Kōhei’s fingers touch the safety shorts under her skirt, all she can think about is Ryo coming through the door and saving her. “OI AMAGAI!”
Well, it’s not Ryo but Sumi will take anyone at this point.
There’s a fight. Sumi doesn’t really remember it. She hit her head during it. It was two guys from god knows what school. They were weaker than Kōhei but not weaker than her. Sumi gets hurt. She’s on the ground, palms and legs cut from broken glass from the bottle that was thrown at some point during the fight. There is glass stuck in her calves and she had to pull out pieces from her palms. The cuts are deep, she knows she’ll need stitches. Kōhei wins the fight. Sumi wishes he didn’t. The boys that came to attack Kōhei leave and now she’s on the ground, cradling her hands to her chest when Kōhei crouches down in front of her. “You not gonna thank me for saving you?’ Kōhei asks wiping his bloody knuckles on her skirt
Sumi doesn’t understand why he’s doing this. She doesn’t want to either. She wants to go home or at least leave. “T—Thank you” her voice comes out breathy and shaky
She’s in pain. Her hands hurt and so do her legs. There’s blood running down her arms, staining the sleeves of her hoodie. It’s gross. Sumi doesn’t like all the blood. It’s horrible. Even worse that it’s her own. Is she dying? Is she going to die? Kōhei grins at her obvious panic. “How cute” he coos and brings and hand up, holding the side of her head “That’s all? No sweetheart, I’m gonna need a proper thank you”
Sumi doesn’t understand what’s going on or what Kōhei means. She just wants to leave. She’s about to ask him what he means but then Kōhei leans in. It feels like her heart has stopped and at the same time, it feels like it’s beating too fast. Sumi’s never had a heart attack or a stroke or anything related to that but right now that’s what it feels like. It hurts. Her heart is beating so fast her ribs are aching. It’s like her heart is trying to find a way out of her chest and it hurts so so bad. Kōhei’s lips press to hers and Sumi’s throat closes up and her lungs feel tight. She can’t breathe. It hurts. Sumi wants to cry or push him away or at least say something but she’s frozen. Kōhei pulls her hoodie off the rounds of her shoulders without any effort. It’s horrible. Sumi knows Kōhei is taking her lack of protest for consent but no— she doesn’t want this, she wants it to stop but Sumi doesn’t know what to say or do. Kōhei pulls off her and looks right at Sumi’s terror-filled eyes. “Stop” Sumi finally chokes out
Kōhei only smiles and pulls her hoodie off her arms. Sumi tries to stop him this time. Pulling her arms back so he can’t take it off her but he does anyways. The fabric brushes against her sliced-up palms and she hisses. Blood runs down her forearms and stain her white dress shirt that she had rolled up past her elbows. “Kōhei” she chokes out his name
He leans over and takes her chin in one hand between his thumb and index finger. “Oh don’t look at me like that sweetheart, breaks my heart” He says in a mockingly sweet voice
Sumi wants to throw up. Not only is there blood on her, but Kōhei wiped his own blood off on her skirt. The entire karaoke room is filled with the metallic smell of blood. Maybe now she’ll admit that Tsukasa had Ryo had been babying her. People always said they both would but Sumi never believed it. Maybe if they had at least let her get roughened up at least once or maybe have her fend for herself she would know how to fight back or saw the signs of this much earlier. No, Ryo should have seen this coming. Right? Sumi can’t find it in herself to blame Ryo for this. It’s her own fault. “I want to go home” Sumi whispers
She’s crying now and Kōhei seems to like that even more. He leans in and kisses her again. This time, Sumi fights. Or well she tries to. Her bloody palms push at his chest, legs coming up to kick him. Sumi starts to scream and yell for help, something she knows she should have done earlier. Kōhei’s nails dig into her forearm to keep her still, breaking through the skin, leaving long deep scratches in her skin. On the other hand, Sumi does the same, kicking and scratching— Kōhei’s hands become full of blood that both belongs to him and Sumi. She kicks him straight in the chest, heel aiming for his solar plexus. The hit isn’t hard but it’s enough to knock the air out of Kōhei’s lungs. That hit proves brutal to Sumi as well as when Kōhei’s hand that’s in her hair gets stuck in her earring and it rips off her ear as Kōhei falls back. Her earlobe is torn in half, blood runs out of the open wound. Sumi’s hand comes up to hold her ear, too in pain to even let out a sound louder than a gasp. Blood run through the gap between her fingers, down the side of her neck. “Now you’ve done it” Kōhei says and grabs her by the hair after he’s composed himself
Kōhei slaps her across the face. Her lip splits open from the impact and he finishes it by slamming her head hard into the wall behind her. Sumi only sees white for a moment. She can’t feel anything or hear anything. Nothing. But through the mess of her vision she can faintly make out the lights turning on and Kōhei being pulled away from her. It’s when she opens her eyes that she sees what’s going on.
“Sumi'' he whispers but she can’t hear him, her ears are still ringing
This was a bad idea. He knew it. She knew it. This should have never happened. It would have never happened if Sumi had only listened to Ryo in the first place. Ryo is sitting in front of her now. “Oh Sumi, I’m so sorry” he says
She still can’t hear him. It should make her panic but she’s in pain. Everything hurts. Sumi wants to curl up and scream but she can’t. Her body’s still frozen. Ryo reaches his hands out for her. He’s covered in blood. His blood-soaked hands hold her waist and he pulls her up on his lap, hugging her tight. She sees it then— Kōhei half conscious form is laying right there. He’s laying in a puddle of blood, white hair soaked red, bruises littering his face and arms and any skin Sumi can see. Ryo just beat his best friend half to death. A shudder wracks through her body and Ryo only holds her tighter. He’s saying something to her but Sumi still can’t hear him, only able to tell by the way his lips are brushing against her skin. Her head hurts. Everything hurts. Sumi thinks she’s going to pass out but her mind is forcing her to stay awake. She’s not safe yet. She feels terrible to think that but the nagging thought comes true when Ryo’s fingertips breach past the hem of her bloody dress shirt that came untucked during the scuffle. Another shudder wracks through her. Ryo pulls back from the hug and looks right at Sumi, right at her eyes. Her chest hurts. Her heart is still beating so fast it’s hurting her ribs and the scary way Ryo is looking at her is making it even worse. He brings one hand up, cupping her cheek, staining her skin with Kōhei’s blood.
The butterflies she usually gets when Ryo touches her feel like they’re eating away at her insides. Her hearing finally comes back. The music is still playing but it’s not that Sumi hears first. It’s Ryo’s words. At that moment Sumi understood t
“You look good in red”
