AHAB are sad because no one in the band is speaking to anyone else. They won't even make eye contact. It's one long, awkward silence from the van to backstage to the gig in an endless loop.

All we know for sure is that there were four cupcakes in the box at the start of the morning, but only three people got to enjoy them.

This is day three of a six week tour. Tensions are at breaking point. The drummer is refusing to count off the songs after someone called his drum stool The Throne Of Lies. Now the road manager has to do it from the side of the stage, and he keeps getting the tempos wrong. How has it come to this? This could all have been avoided if they'd only adopted that paleo diet they read about last week.

Sad metal is sad. And hungry for frosting.

black metal is funny cuz when I first started I was like "yeah all of its good it all sounds mostly the same anyways" but after a while, I've gotten so picky. when I started I would've been like "yeah this sounds pretty standard and fine" now I'm like "what the FUCK is this alien theme song ass keyboard notes in the background bruh this band fucking sucks" "these vocals sound like dogshit, too blackened death metal sounding for me" "the production quality is too good I can hear the instruments. they must be posers" "where's double bass drums" would've sounded like scrawled ramblings i'd find on the walls of a psychiatric inpatient ward to me a while ago

Guelph’s Nepenthe are a phenomenal band. Their blend of doom metal and black metal is absolutely gorgeous and reminds me a lot of groups like Woods of Ypres and Agalloch. It was a pleasure to join them at the Jimmy Jazz for the release of their new EP, ‘The Fading Promise of Tomorrow’, which you should definitely check out.

Tzompantli – Beating The Drums Of Ancestral Force

James looks at Tzompantli, the outstanding new album from Pomona, California based death doom masters Tzompantli, released May 17th on 20 Buck Spin.

Beating the Drums of Ancestral Force takes the listener on a journey into both the brutality and horror as well as a the majesty of the Aztec Empire. They take you there with a unique style of death doom that draws in elements of OSDM and cavernous atmospheric death metal. I need to impress upon you just how goddamn heavy this album is and how this heaviness is amplified by how menacing and eerie the album can be at times. This is an easy contender for my AOTY list and its going to take a lot to know it off. From commanding vocals, feral barks and war chants to crushing guitar, folk instruments and more do not miss Beating the Drums of Ancestral Force.
