Masters of the Universe newspaper comic: “Attack on Snake Mountain”

Last time, we were introduced to Gwildor, Saurod, Blade and his home planet of Merrian. This story starts with He-Man finding a mystically-protected door in the caverns beneath Castle Grayskull.

Then he turns back into Prince Adam for a ceremony at the palace. While writer Chris Weber chose to write out the two villains introduced in the previous arc, the Heroic Gwildor is sticking around.

Fans often resent Gwildor as a replacement for Orko. He was created for the 1987 film, on which it was decided that they didn’t have the budget for a character who’s always levitating. Here, though, they coexist, and Weber decides to have Gwildor try to befriend the little magician as a science project.

Meanwhile, a rogue guard named Robert has given Duke Tiberon, Eternia’s Prime Minister, a magic amulet that makes him rave about the need to destroy Skeletor.

Over at Snake Mountain, we catch up with Skeletor, who punished Evil-Lyn and Beast Man in the dungeons.

... Clamp Champ, how do you not see the problem with a plan consisting of “Hey! One guy! Journey to a mountain and raze it!”?

Robert is actually working for Skeletor, and this silly plan is actually a false flag planned by Skeletor. I’m not sure why.

The Swamp of Smokes has a tunnel to Snake Mountain, and Castle Grayskull is on the opposite side of it. In the Snake Men arc, it’s also where King Hiss went to release Sssqueeze and Snake Face. In the minicomics, he had to do that at Viper Tower... which lies between Snake Mountain and Castle Grayskull. You could infer that the Swamp of Smokes is what exists on the surface when the Three Towers are NOT raised.

The Sorceress sends He-Man after Clamp Champ, because if Snake Mountain is ever destroyed, Castle Grayskull would be as well. They’re both part of the balance of magic.

OK, I buy the ��balance” thing, but “I’ll trick a man into destroying the mountain I live in” MAKES NO SENSE! Not only would it not work when Clamp Champ isn’t Superman, but why would Skeletor want it to?

The Sorceress takes He-Man to the warded door he noticed at the beginning:

Apparently He-Man can’t just travel to the Swamp of Smokes overland like a normal person, but has to use a passage through the Heart of Eternia to catch up with Clamp Champ.

The magic at the Heart of Eternia changes He-Man from just having Good power to “I am the Power!”

When he defeats Skeletor, Teela and Clamp Champ have to stop him from executing Skeletor.

When He-Man chooses to give up absolute power and only use the power of good, the Sorceress seals up access to the Heart of Eternia. THE END.

This marks the last time Chris Weber would introduce new characters from the toy line until the final story arc, which introduced “New Adventures” characters.

#MastersIfTheUniverse "#EXTENDAR" #1985.. becomes a momento. Um 35 years ago, one of the women who helped raised me gave me #Hordak's failed rebel experiment as a Christmas gift when was a child. A pretty cold December evening if I recall in 85 after some church function post leaving the Catholic School that day. That Catholic school and church were the literal bane of my existence and MOST of the most traumatizing experiences my entire life. There are reasons I've grown to loathe with a passion Catholicism and it's destructive hypocrisy but that's a story for another time. Whatever, after a particularly rough day from what I remember Joyce came to visit me after this church / school function and gifted me with this heroic extendable knight. I was shocked. Joyce rarely ever gave me a toy as a gift. maybe she give us kids some clothes or a gift certificate or something but not this. So this was rare. He's by far one of the most special and coolest of Hordak's freekish outcasts. Joyce didn't make a lot of money at the post office and here she was working into her older age to give me this special guy who became one of the highlights of all my toys. I've had my ins and outs with He-Man but Extendar, silly as he is has remained one of my favorite heroes. His somewhat "schizophrenic" backstory also makes him oddly relatable. I also appreciate his big heart and care for his friends. When things become mementos their value uhh "extends" beyond something monetary even if it's just stupid pieces of plastic. Joyce made it okay for me to have my sense of humor & taught me that I was human and "normal" when the rest of the world gave me the impression that I was bad like what Extendar was told. She wasn't a grandmother to me she was more surrogate mom. And she's gone now as of Sunday. She was 92. Some people teach you to reach beyond yourself, and encourage you - letting you know that you're doing okay despite when people tell you otherwise. I’m imagining Hordak and Entrapta doing this together. After Extendar escaped, Entrapta would feel bad that Dragstor forgot their friendship.
