cc!leo is so weird and fun to write because i have to capture the spectrum of him impossibly gentle and caring, goofy and nonchalant to make everyone feel better, and INSANELY invested in the prospect of brutally murdering someone all at the same time and writing ch23 really illuminates that for me lmao. like the characters just kind of take me places that i dont expect and apparently the answer to "what happens when you strip leo of all his layers of facade and make him forced to hurt the most important person in his life through horrifying mind control?" in this extremely specific instance was uhhhh. I don't like any of the maps I've seen for HTTYD so i'm playing a puzzle game w all the locations. This is the 3rd version so far

Before release, I always kind of thought of Ver's usual haunts in Minrathous being part of an industrial-ish area (factories, docks, the surrounding blue collar residentials, etc.), but I've been thinking, and with Dock Town being what it is in-game (and with what it is to Neve), I think I prefer her being more tied to one of the (no doubt many) entertainment- and nightlife districts of the city.

I'm thinking of one of those moderately seedy parts of town that have pubs/taverns/hookah lounges/drag bars/"specialty shops"/etc. and little mom-and-pop eateries that are definitely not fronts for something all lining the streets on the bottom floors of workers' apartment complexes, and at least three larger nightlife establishments (like a casino [gambling den], a circus [it's a cointoss whether you'll see the best burlesque act or a cagefight], and something they only affectionately call a "dancehall") are all sharing view of the same street.

As of right now, I'm tentatively calling it Redbrick Ridge in my mind, because Minrathous seems to use primarily light-colored stones and red and teal magelights (and I think poorer, mainly Soporati-owned places using red accent-bricks to imitate the red of magic would be a cool touch), but I also like the idea that colloquially, it'd more be known as the Catsbane Quarter, or just Catsbane (after the codex entry for the Sun-Blonde Vint in DAI)- in part because of the way a certain Tevene alcohol is typically served, and in part because, like Dock Town, it's also home to a large colony of feral/stray cats.

(Maybe one of the ways you could easily spot an outsider is that they'd be the ones who say that something is "on the Ridge" or "in Redbrick", but the people who actually live there would say that they're from Catsbane, or refer to the people there as "cats". Like, "where in the city are you from?" "oh, I'm a cat.")

(Lots of fun cat-wordplay for a more "low-class" area, too... "A cat may look at a king" being a bit of a slogan for non-mage and slave rights, or an expression of commiserating over injustice? "All cats are grey in the dark", both as a "we're all equal here", and as a way to say "no officer, I didn't see anything"? Someone suspected to be an informant is someone who "wears a bell"? So many opportunities, and they all work really nicely for a place with pronounced Shadow Dragon presence!)

Since Ver was a (military-trained) Soporati guard/rent-a-cop before joining up with Varric, I originally figured that having her mainly guard (and spy on-) slave-keeping construction sites was a fitting thing, but I think now, knowing both her character and the game as I do, I prefer her as a security guard during the week, and a bouncer during the weekends.

Like I like her not as a go-to problem-solver like Neve, but more like... some sort of a neighborhood Red Jenny, someone who somehow (at least tangentially) knows everyone in her bubble.

And like... she lives in one of the dingy little apartments above a moderately run-down lunch-place (at first I thought it would be run by her uncle, now I'm more picturing an older person who emphatically calls her things like "columba mea" and acts like a doting grandmother, but isn't actually related to her). Her friends are all line cooks, busboys, dancers, dishwashers and all kinds of entertainers, as well as bar owners, bartenders and barflies, not a small percentage of them Liberati- which, with her reputation as a useful person to know and the open secret of her being a Shadow, would be something that probably would have drawn someone like Varric to her very easily. (I mean, he primarily seems to network by just... going to bars and asking the drunkest people still capable of speech about who's worth knowing, lol.)

Plus, I also really like the idea that if the owners/workers at a place know that someone is about to cause trouble, they'd see if she's around, ask her to step in for the night, and maybe crack some heads together.

Like imagine being a big, hotshot wannabe-Venatori swinging their metaphorical dick around over a game of Archon, and in comes this quite pretty, but overall unremarkable woman who is kissing 5'7" from the bottom and is not particularly intimidating, but she still lays you the absolute fuck out to dry without breaking a sweat. Probably one of the top ten most embarrassing ways for that night to end, lol.

#squirrel plays datv #oc: verbena mercar #i also quite like the contrast of her being a bona-fide city girl and Davrin being; well; a Dalish elf #I think the both of them exploring each other's lives and cultures is a lot of fun #he takes her to Arlathan on walks and picnics and adventures like that to refresh and relax #she takes him to dance and eat weird food at her favorite hidden little places in Minrathous where people greet her by name #and both are welcome outsiders in the other's world #idk i think it's really sweet #..... and i just remembered that as a Shadow and a cat; she'd be the closest to an X-man that Thedas gets #oh well; accidents like this can happen lol #isn't there a dragon in like. idk; Iron Flame or w/e that's named Solas?#that author for SURE didn't google that name before giving it to that character; so i can have a character who is technically (a) Shadowcat #watch me give a hoot

Now let's wrap up this week's weird and wacky location by taking a look at some exteriors as well as the interior of some of the outbuildings!!

Down a long overgrown driveway lies this incredible abandoned farmhouse. Surrounded by farm fields this property has been sitting for at least 20 years untouched and nature truly has taken over. The house and land are full of possessions that the owners Paul and Claire left behind after their deaths.

They were married in 1947 and Paul is of Ukrainian descent.

Paul was a farmer and has spent his retirement years making sculptures as a way to try and stay young by keeping his mind busy. He would scavenge the local dump for things he could use in his pieces as well as repurposing his old farming machinery. The driveway was lined with windmills and steel flower sculptures, which were all products of his creativity. He also liked to make things that moved such as swings made from various found objects.

If you dig deeper into the overgrowth you would see that he was a bit of a hoarder of large items, with cars from as early as the 50s, a hospital gurney and even an old porcelain autopsy table!

But the collections didn't stop in the yard, Claire also enjoyed collecting and one of the rooms in the house was filled with her obsession.

The farm was a popular spot for passersby to stop and take photos, it was a bit of a tourist attraction. But this also brought some unwanted attention to his property, with thieves targeting his farm. He erected a fence and put in a gate and cemented his sculptures into the ground along the fenceline.

Claire passed away in 1999 followed by her husband Paul in 2003. The property has sat abandoned ever since and stands as a memorial to their lives.

#abbey plays honkai star rail #like okay I appreciate being able to get HMC Eidolons for free #and it made me see a lot of stuff I missed. but man #it took forever #people complained about March's event being repetitive #and I get that #but at least it was more straightforward #for HMC you have to basically just explore everything #fight any strong boss you encounter do a lot of hidden quests #it gets tedious #and the game doesn't really tell you anything on how to get them #anyways. I guess I'm officially ready for the new Penacony story bit #incoming kinda Worried Rambling but #I don't know how Penacony has anything to do with what happened in Xianzhou #like Star Rail's pacing is becoming kind of a mess #I mean. we should have gone to Amphoreus asap but then they got like #'actually we should stop by Xianzhou there's no rush!'#and now Xianzhou's story bit ends with Ruan Mei and Tingyun and then what?#we just forget about them and move on? and go back to Penacony of all places when we just bid our farewells to the place?#I don't know I mean AGAIN I love Penacony and I can't wait to see what they are cooking #but I'm worried about the way they deal with cliffhangers by leaving super important things aside #while a lot of things are happening at the same time #we all expected 2.4 and 2.5 to be fillers but they really weren't so #there's too much on the table right now #hmhm....

…but everything is done in such a tourist-attracting way that the whole business appears to hinge upon sensationalized exploitation of the mentally ill >:(

So-called “doctors” did unspeakable things to the mentally disabled people under their care #Like sure if something is haunted; it’s haunted and should be investigated for science… like whatever #But I have a problem when the whole “asylum” thing is presented as a frightfully whispered word for an aesthetic backdrop #Like ooooooohhhhhh insane people they’re craaaazzzzyyyyyyy and are going to kiiillll yooouuuuuu shut the fuck up #Yeah hospitals in general are haunted.#But the only reason this one is getting so much traffic is because mental hospitals are so stigmatized #So of course people want to see the fucking freak show they advertise it as #In a place where the “scary” people (who are dead and therefore cannot defend themselves) were likely abused by actual monsters #And might I add it’s kind of gross that this place presents itself as a museum exploring the place’s history #when at the same time they have a scare attraction based upon the asylum WITHIN THE SAME WALLS #Rule number one to historical presentation is to present sensitive topics with sensitivity #and not to sensationalize details for shock value #Present the facts. Be respectful. I’ve been feeling Créa creep up on me as of late and today I went back and reread my little document where I type up random ideas for scenes/fics and I was like. Wow who wrote this. This is really good. Why isn’t there more of this damn. But also wow I really put miss créa through the blender and she is a fine red mist a lot. But that is the life of a ranger…and even when she’s not a ranger anymore I press blend on high and she is sadly used to that

#(I forgot what made me think of it but I had this fantastic idea post war where Créa has tried to keep herself together)#(and it’s one specific incident that really makes her crack- I wrote a really compelling idea of her having PTSD and it unexpectedly)#(manifesting in a place where she didn’t anticipate it. and ofc it’s medieval medicine so they don’t know what PTSD is exactly but they)#(not like we know ptsd anyways. so it’s a really interesting exploration of grief and suppression and dealing with it- or not dealing with)#(it in this case. bc she’s avoided it for years and she’s like. god I fucking miss being a ranger so much. that was ME.)#(now I’m not a ranger anymore and I lost my entire identity)#(she can’t return to Evendim for a long time and desperately misses it. most of her friends are dead)#(or gone up north or treat her differently)#(she feels really isolated and alone even though she’s aware she’s not but it’s a lot to deal with!!! and I didn’t quite have an ending)#(but it was really compelling and I need to return to it one day)#(the other one I wrote ideas for and wrote a small scene was crea’s first experience meeting rangers)#(back when the angle was new. sighs. the potential…crea interacting with and learning ranger culture for the first time)#(after being alienated and kept away not of her own will. and her having a scene with faeron and standing on the bridge with him)#(but also of her thinking of what her life might’ve been like had she not been lied to about her heritage or had it hidden)#(she’s at a huge disadvantage-she barely knows dúnedain/elf history or sindarin etc. she could’ve had a whole different life)#(and AGAIN the theme of GRIEF- grieving smth that was kept from you. a life you’ll never have but could’ve)#(anyways. that probably all could’ve been in a post LOL and not in tags)#(but yeah damn!!! I was writing some good stuff!!!)#(now I wanna replay all the LOTRO areas again..)
