I'm co-hosting a game jam!
What is Dice Exploder? Each week, Sam Dunnewold and a rotating cohost break down one tabletop RPG mechanic as deep as they possibly can.
For the duration of the third season, we're running a game jam inspired by the podcast's premise. You can join the DE Discord , where there's a channel for this game jam, to discuss your submission with other participants and fans of the show.
Explode a game you love (or want to love) and remix, remake, or reinterpret it in part or whole.
Dice Exploder is about zooming in on a part of a game and making it everything. This jam is about taking your favorite part of a game and dragging it to the center of the experience. Want to turn that 400 page tome you can never get anyone to play into a single-page game? Go for it! Is there a combat sim game you're pretty sure is actually about running a coffee shop? Write those rules. Taking a setting apart down to the molecules and rewriting it as barely an echo of the original? Totally fair play.
The jam runs from Feb 1 to Apr 1.

The Earth's Moon as seen from Central Florida, July 21, 2024, 8:43 pm. The full moon is captured in the dark night sky and shown right of center in the image. Photo by me.
Note: I cut my thumb this morning and it doesn't really want to help me type. So for that reason, I present to you the Prologue of "How Grogu and Din Djarin Tamed the Wild Mythosaur". It's already published on AO3 if you care to read the whole thing. The link will be at the end of the Prologue.
Prologue
In ancient times Mandalorian warriors proved their worth through combat, as they still do today, with a rather interesting difference. They did not fight each other. There was no point. Skills were tested, to be sure, but there was no need to step on each other. The planet had many more deadly options for each warrior to test their strength and ability against.
None were so coveted or trying as the great monsters of the trapped seas and rivers. Bodies of water that flowed under the surface of the planet only to break through at springs and bogs and inland seas. Woe to the Mando who got caught by one of those creatures unaware because their armor, while able to save them from being lacerated and crushed, was of little utility if the great creature decided to pull them under and hide them in their subterranean dens and nests.
During the last full moons of the cycle, if you chose well, you could battle your monster above ground, instead of below. While that saved the warrior from drowning, it rarely saved them from other damage. The point of the exercise was not to best the creature but to survive contact with it. Even a single contact, as the creature was so fearsome that even the bravest Mandalorians broke at facing it down.
At least, that is how it went until one simple Mandalorian warrior changed the ritual for all time.
Tracyn Pirun hadn’t planned on joining that year’s battle for leadership. He’d actually found the whole thing ridiculous. One or more of his friends and comrades had managed to disable themselves or straight up die the prior year and for what? The pleasure and responsibility of convincing the clans to work together on some project or other. Projects, quite frankly, that did not need all clans to agree to them or participate in them. Why did all the clans have to vote on the location of the public privies or the colors of the materials to be used therein? But when Tracyn’s father was the leader, that’s what he did with his time. Tracyn wanted nothing to do with it.
No, instead of being part of the thing, he had agreed to watch from a safe location and then provide aid to anyone who needed it. He was, at least, a gifted medic and that was as useful to his family and clan as his fighting abilities. Perhaps more so the year his own father had taken the leadership position and almost lost his leg to the creature's bite. But for Tracyn’s quick actions the older man would have.
This evening, his location of choice was an outcropping of stone that de-marked the opening of the great salt water mine. Based on what he saw the night of his father’s test, the great beast leapt out of the mine/marsh at it lowest point. It made sense. Where Tracyn sat the creature would have needed to turn completely around and climb the rock face to gain higher ground. It was much easier to move through the marsh and find the humans who wished to torment it for sport and profit. Mandos from all over the planet had travelled here to take the test and would take up positions around the marsh shallows and wait. Tracyn had a better view.
Someone, Tracyn had no idea who, had discovered the saltwater marsh generations earlier. A problematic thing at best. It connected to the ocean hundreds of klicks away and surged and ebbed with its tides. When the full moons were visible in the sky, the water level dropped very low and a careful observer would notice the glinting of the metallic ore that would be exploited and mined and turned into the precious beskar plates that protected the warrior class from all hazards.
This was also the location the monsters would use to emerge from their underwater dens and where the leadership tests would take place. Each warrior who chose to participate in the test would have to see how long they could remain within striking distance of the creature. Whoever survived for the longest period of time without racing away would be declared leader, until such time as another group wished to try their hand at the test.
So there he was, sitting back and waiting, with all the others, although he was the only one sitting on the top of the mine/marsh. The moons were high and the excitement and terror were as well. He had already seen twenty or thirty warriors simply trudge away. Just being there was too much for them. Tracyn didn’t blame them. Had his father not literally dragged him to the location, he’d never have been there either.
The great spotting horn blew and even more warriors fell back, afraid to see what was promised by the sound the seemed to make the very rocks that Tracyn was using as his seat rock and shift. He shrugged it off. It was easy to get caught up in the fear and the intense elation of facing your opponent. If he was going to be any use as a healer, he needed to watch the proceedings with something like analytical curiosity.
But the rocks kept shaking and that didn’t make sense. Why would they shake? Was more than one of the creatures leaving the mine/marsh? Tracyn stood up and walked closer to the edge of the outcropping. He had his flight pack on and could deal with anything strange if he had to, but he wanted, no needed, a better view. A great cry of fear went up from the assembled Mandos as Tracyn reached a better viewing location, but he didn’t see the monster that attacked his father. All he saw were the Mandos clustering together and walking deeper into the edges of the march. Why were they doing that?
Before he could appreciate how familiarity had betrayed him, the rocks fell away before his feet and Tracyn Pirun found himself falling. But not nearly as far as he had expected and his landing was softer as well. What had just happened?
Then he actually looked at where he was and tried not to throw up in his helmet. He was on the wretched creature. Holding it’s neck and trying desperately to activate his flight pack. But it was no use. The rocks that had slid and bounced and fallen away as the creature had turned 180 degrees and climbed up to the high ground had destroyed the controller and he was just there for the ride.
And ride he did. The creature decided that it needed to go for a long gallop with the lone Mandalorian warrior holding on for dear life. Tracyn didn’t know if the creature knew that he was even on its back, neck, whatever. Given the relative relationship between their sizes, Tracyn considered that the creature didn’t even know it had a passenger.
But just then the thing stopped. Just stopped. They were easily a hundred clicks from where they had started. Tracyn wondered what was going on.
“Pest, why do you cling to my back but not bite?”
The question formed in Tracy’s mind and he replied as if to another.
“Why do I not bite? Why would I bite? I am a healer.”
“A healer? Explain.”
What? Tracyn didn’t need to explain to himself what a healer did. He knew. He fixed injuries and tried to cure disease.
“Ah… a life giver. Very well. Life giver’s are revered among my kind. To harm you would be wrong. Tell the other pests to leave us alone. You are not what we hunt under the moons.”
Tracyn realized, finally, that he was not talking to himself. This was not some crisis brought on by the strange circumstances under which he found himself. The creature was talking to him. Thinking at him. Whatever.
“As you say. I will tell them. Can you return me to my people?”
“Yes.”
With that the creature turned around itself and began to head back to the marsh/mine at a more sedate pace.
“Do you have names?” Tracyn asked the creature as they trotted along.
“We are called many things over our lives. You have a word for individuals that are not pests?”
“Yes. We call them friends.”
“Then you may call me friends. You are different from the others, Healer. We will meet many times.”
Tracyn thought about and fell silent. He supposed it was inevitable that a Mandalorian warrior who refused to fight for leadership would find himself in a role where he would be spending his time picking out the colors of privies.
